London’s Acid Techno Underground
Tumblr media
In the early 1990s a new sound was emerging in the underground raves of London.
In a shared squat in Stoke Newington a group of DJs met and connected over a love of music and disillusionment with the commercial clubbing scene. For them, mainstream clubs were too clean-cut and restrictive and house music lacked hardcore edge.
youtube
Dubbed Chris, Aaron, and Julian Liberator, the trio started playing illegal Squat parties and sweaty basement clubs as The Liberator DJ Collective. They became architects of a new sound, and filled derelict, industrial spaces with what they called ‘acid techno’.
youtube
They fused acid with chunky techno and high adrenaline trance, and their hybrid, gritty sounds reflected the architecture of the warehouses and basements they were played in. The parties began in large house parties that would host live punk bands downstairs (accessible via a fireman’s pole erected through a hole cut into the floor) but, by the middle of the decade, turned into large-scale events that would attract thousands of revellers.
The scene developed via an illegal network of parties. Organisers would often break into spaces on the night, and party goers received the location of the rave via a pre-recorded partyline at the last minute.

I’m processing a lot of what’s happening today through film & writing. And there’s a line that’s been echoing in my ear, as of late: ⁣ ⁣ “It comes as a great shock⁣, Around the age of five, or six, or seven; To discover the flag, in which you have pledged allegiance - along with everybody else - has NOT pledge allegiance to you..”⁣ - James Baldwin ⁣ ⁣ This is childhood trauma. And growing up in St. Louis I’ve experienced so much of it, as the token black child - from kids spitting in my hair brush, to a classmate writing “Paul is a cock-sucking n*gger* on my gym locker. We encounter that trauma so EARLY as black folx. And I wanted to capture that somehow, and tie it into a narrative that explores it somehow. Weathering. So, I’ve been developing an experimental horror film, called “Quarantine (This is a Plague)” with Katrina Reid, Glenn Quentin & Pierre Jean Gonzales. Today, I finally got to show some of the test footage to help show the feel of the film - and I was just nervous as hell. But they loved it - and gave awesome, brilliant f*cking notes. And just gave space for processing emotions and trauma that we each were dealing with that day. Everything just clicked. Honestly, I’m just thankful to have friends like them. Anyway, here’s a small snippet of what I showed today.

1993-ban nálunk járt @kimwildeofficial , a @friderikuszpodcast show vendége volt. A kiadó jóvoltából készíthettem vele egy rövid interjút, ami eddig dobozban volt, de megtaláltam a BETA-t, és be is digizem. Sőt, emlékszem, a Művésznő a ‘Go For It’ maxit is dedikálta nekem akkor! ♥️😀 Back in 1993, Kim Wilde came here to be the guest of a late night show. My record company made it possible to do short interview with her. She also signed the cover of my ‘Go For It’ 12 inch single. Sweet memories… 😍 #nagyember #memories #nineties #interview #ilovemyjob #musician #tv #kimwilde #instahun #mik #emlékek #televízió #archive #footage #archivefootage #music #popmusic (helyszín: Budapest, Hungary) https://www.instagram.com/p/COfNM2ThtnK/?igshid=10q8xtix9lqvw

Menelik Shabazz
Tumblr media
Legend of British cinema Menelik Shabazz sadly passed in June. He leaves behind a great legacy and will be remembered for his sharp vision and triumphant works centering Black narratives, celebrating Black culture and fighting for Black liberation.
youtube
Working as a writer, director and producer, Shabazz was a trailblazer and his stories have shaped the landscape of British cinema. He remained radical throughout his career, which began with documentary Breaking Point: The “Sus Law” in 1978, which scrutinised the police stop and search policy. He went on to join the Black Liberation Front, and direct ‘Blood Ah Go Run’ in 1982, a documentary on the response in the Black community of the New Cross Fire.
youtube
Shabazz co-founded the Ceddo Film Video Workshop in 1982 with a vision to empower Black film production, training and film screenings, and founded the BFM International Film Festival in 1999.
The writer, director and producer had relocated to Zimbabwe to work on a new project, The Spirits Return, his first full-length fiction feature in 40 years. He will be sorely missed, but will remain an inspiration for future generations of filmmakers, and his work will continue to empower, challenge and liberate.

The footage is important because its from the late 1970s, before I was born and it shows a family day out in Eastbourne. My grandparents and my mother and uncle used to live there until 1972 when they relocated to the North East. This was professionally transferred from film to video cassette in the 1990s. The film has a beautiful quality in that the magnetic tape has been played so often the image has lost much of the clarity and light found on the original 8mm film. I think this adds to the magic and nostalgia. My Grandfather enjoyed shooting amateur films and took his cine-camera with him on trips abroad, family gatherings, weddings and birthdays. This video was made in 2009. I digitally transferred the tapes myself and added a song of mine to the video sequence. It was a first proper interaction with digitally transferring film.
