I’m processing a lot of what’s happening today through film & writing. And there’s a line that’s been echoing in my ear, as of late: ⁣ ⁣ “It comes as a great shock⁣, Around the age of five, or six, or seven; To discover the flag, in which you have pledged allegiance - along with everybody else - has NOT pledge allegiance to you..”⁣ - James Baldwin ⁣ ⁣ This is childhood trauma. And growing up in St. Louis I’ve experienced so much of it, as the token black child - from kids spitting in my hair brush, to a classmate writing “Paul is a cock-sucking n*gger* on my gym locker. We encounter that trauma so EARLY as black folx. And I wanted to capture that somehow, and tie it into a narrative that explores it somehow. Weathering. So, I’ve been developing an experimental horror film, called “Quarantine (This is a Plague)” with Katrina Reid, Glenn Quentin & Pierre Jean Gonzales. Today, I finally got to show some of the test footage to help show the feel of the film - and I was just nervous as hell. But they loved it - and gave awesome, brilliant f*cking notes. And just gave space for processing emotions and trauma that we each were dealing with that day. Everything just clicked. Honestly, I’m just thankful to have friends like them. Anyway, here’s a small snippet of what I showed today.

When you walk around the Corona section of Queens, occasionally you'll find visual expressions of faith with the American flag. Corona is primarily a South American neighborhood. In these images, it's the flag that prompted me to take the picture, because I'm interested in the context in which the American flag is displayed. Sometimes faith and patriotism go hand in hand, but sometimes, I wonder if the flag is being used as a shield or if it's a source of pride by those who display it, as seen in the first picture.
