#OTD in 1794 – Archibald Hamilton Rowan, United Irishman, is tried on charges of distributing seditious paper.
Archibald Hamilton Rowan, a distinguished United Irishman, was born in London, 12th May 1757; his father, Gawen Hamilton of Killyleagh, was a gentleman of large landed property in Ireland, whose ancestors came over in James I.’s reign. Educated at Westminster and Cambridge, he formed aristocratic acquaintances, travelled on the Continent, and when his means ran short, mortgaged his expectations.…

The Man O'War
One of the mysteries of Black Sails is where the Spanish man o’war captured in season 1 vanishes to after Captain Flint and his crew return to Walrus…but another mystery is exactly WHAT is this ship. I’ve seen her referred to as a frigate, but now that I’ve captured a good screenshot (season 2, episode 4), that this is definitely no frigate.
Tumblr media
The man o’war has three full gun decks. Counting gun ports, it looks like each has approximately fifteen guns, plus a short gun deck back aft near the main deck. This averages to 45-49 guns per broadside, which makes this grand bitch not just a ship of the line, but a first rate ship of the line. That's the age of sail equivalent of a battleship! Take a look at the gif below of the man o’war savaging Walrus and Ranger.
(Frankly, if she was a frigate, I don't think Flint would've worried much; Walrus has the throw weight of a sixth rate frigate and would've stood a good chance; with Ranger along, they would've been just fine and no one should've panicked.)
Tumblr media
So, what ship is this? The Urca de Lima was a real ship, though Urca was only a nickname for Santissima Trinidad, and she was part of a combination of two flotillas that made up the 1715 Treasure Fleet. This fleet consisted of eleven ships, of which at least two were ships of the line.
The first was ex-Hampton Court, a British built third rate ship of the line of 70 guns that was captured by the French then sold to the Spanish. Sources say that she was renamed Nuestra Señora del Carmen, but contemporary sources such as the governor of Jamacia, Archibald Hamilton indicate that this was a separate ship and the flagship of the second part of the fleet. (More on that in a moment.)
The second confirmed ship of the line was the French Griffon, which was the one and only survivor. (Cool fact: the captain of this ship was also likely the informant who gave Hamilton his information).
The third ship is the mystery ship that brought up the rear of the formation. This ship is harder to place, and was either a different "massive war galleon" or Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a third ship of the line. This may have been a third rate or fourth rate ship of the line, but sources make it very hard to tell. Given that the wrecks that have been found have never been positively identified, it's even harder to determine which ship was which.
Back to Black Sails. Historical evidence says that there wasn't a first rate ship of the line in the 1715 Treasure Fleet, but the show does also indicate that the Urca was traveling alone, so a bit of dramatic license says that we've got a first rater along for the ride. It's far from outside the realm of possibility, given the contemporary evidence that the Spanish definitely did use ships of the line as escorts for treasure ships.
I think it's safe to say that the ship isn't Hampton Court, however. An ex-British officer like James Flint would 100% recognize Hampton Court, who would've been captured (1707) after he left England but was a distinctly British design. Additionally, the characters continuously refer to her as a Spanish man o'war, which indicates she's Spanish-built.
Spanish-built ships of the line with three decks have 94 guns or greater. Until 1700ish, they frequently were referred to as galleons, a term that faded out of use and was replaced by navíos. If I'm going to be a real history nerd, Spain didn't really have a three deck ship of the line in this era; they'd scrapped the only one they had in 1705, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y las Animas. But prior to scrapping, this ship was sent to the colonies to harass settlers around Panama, so she was on the right side of the world in the early 18th century.
Historically speaking, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y las Animas (Our Lady of the Conception and of Souls) is the best candidate for the Man O'War in Black Sails.
In-universe speaking, that big bitch is a three deck, first rate ship of the line of somewhere between 94-100 guns, just based on the number of gun ports and the mincemeat she makes of two ships at the same time. Why did she vanish? Probably because it'd be hard as hell for anyone to beat Flint if you let him keep that ship, and Woodes Rodgers would've had a much harder time taking Nassau when she was protected by a ship of the line.
Have you seen this post before? Probably a close cousin of it. Dimwit me deleted my tumblr and had to remake it.

26th August 1565 saw Mary Queen of Scots lead an army out of Edinburgh to suppress a rebellion led by her half brother James Stewart.
This was all today with Mary's decision to Marry Lord Darnley, Moray, who was strongly opposed to Henry Stuart’s family, decided to rebel against Mary. He was joined by Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll and James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault in March 1565.
With strong support and an army of 5000 men, Mary was determined to pursue the rebels. It turned into a "Chase about" Scotland, hence the name it was given Chaseabout Raid.
The rebels gathered in Ayrshire. Mary set out from Holyroodhouse to Linlithgow and Stirling on 26 August 1565 to move to Glasgow and confront them. Her cannon followed, brought by John Chisholm, who had obtained funds from the Burgh of Edinburgh after Mary promised the town rights over Leith. The treasurer of the Scottish exchequer, John Wishart of Pitarro, had sided with the rebellion and was replaced by William Murray of Tullibardine. The Provost of Edinburgh was also removed and Simon Preston of Craigmillar, a friend of Mary put in his place. William Murray's lands were raided by Highlanders. On 31 August, Moray and his supporters arrived in Edinburgh, this is where the chase thing comes into it The rebel lords left Edinburgh. Mary came back to Edinburgh in early September and retired to Stirling, then back to Glasgow. Moray's supporters retreated to Dumfries.
The rebels had really little support Moray and his supporters numbered between 1,000 or 1,200 men and as a result they could not seize power. They waited in Dumfries for Elizabeth I to send help. She refused to give it as it may have set a precedent for nobles within England to turn against their monarch. The rebellion was over
The rebels crossed the border at Carlisle, then made their way to Newcastle upon Tyne. Moray decided to go to London, and got as far as Royston in Hertfordshire, until he received a letter from Elizabeth I of England to stop as he was not invited and a rebel against his own queen. He was then brought to Westminster on 23 October 1565 to explain himself to Elizabeth and the French ambassadors.
Elizabeth said to him that "itt were no Prince's part to think well of your doinges, ... and, she wolde putt allso her helping hande too make them to understand the dutye which the subject owght to bear towarddes the Prynce." Moray declared he had not intended anything to the danger of Mary's person.
Moray stayed in England at Newcastle over the winter and returned to Scotland on 10 March 1566. Mary had summoned him for trial, and David Rizzio had just been murdered. Moray was reconciled with Mary and back on the Scottish Privy Council by 29 April 1566.
You wonder why Mary pardoned Moray, but he was her half brother and with Rizzio's murder she must have been thinking, she should have listened to him in the first place?
Just another chapter in the complexities of Mary's time trying to rule her Country.in a world dominated by men and religious zealots.
Pics are Mary and Moray.

Okay but if Nico was a gossip girl character which one would he be and why?
ok bestie sit down and strap IN.
the surface level answer is Georgina Sparks. she's iconic, scheming, came to serve, cause trouble and leave. BUT we can do better.
It's a no brainer! Serena! This one holds a little more water: lives in the Upper East Side penthouse socialite, beach blonde bombshell. they're both party girls, have a little princess and the pauper moment by falling for the guy who is outside of their rich people circle. (Ahem, Lonely Boy Lewis)
but a core Serena trait is that she always gets what she wants, and things will always work out for her just by virtue of existing.
the real answer is the always second best to Serena, also manipulative queen B with a heart of gold: Blair Waldorf. Let me explain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
precocious only child.
gets into yale/imperial college respectively. blair is one of the few rich kids in the show who ACTIVELY studies. she's smart she's ambitious!!!
canon compliant eating disorder for both
both despite having Famous Parent In Career They're Interested In (fashion, racing) nepo babies, the bestie that's effortless outshines/gets their start. (Eleanor Waldorf with the Serena photoshoot/Keke Rosberg forming Mclaren Mercedes Benz)
Speaking of Serena... THE besties to frenemies. Can't live with her, can't live without her! invented that dynamic!!! they're the IT girls... the moment... no matter how hard blair has to consciously try, it comes easy to serena
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also side note. but there is No One more Nate Archibald coded than jenson button. Beautiful, blonde, rich boy himbo.
half of gossip girl plots revolve around miscommunication, so you're telling me nico deliberately mistranslating German to lewis wouldn't fit right in there?
In this scenario, Jenny is Max. I will not explain. demon child who unsurpassed Blair's throne (beats lewis hamilton in WDC)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
talking shit on their 2011 blackberries this is basically the same photo
being defined by their toxic on again off again relationship (chuck/blair, brocedes)
and ultimately, being absolute icons.

Pepperazzi wrote down a few more notes: ‘not depression i guess’ ‘Google symptoms of changelings?’ ‘Do changelings have souls?’
He nodded, and said, “Understandable. I’m sure you’re just dyin’ to know the answers, just like I am. Hungry for the next course but the server’s gone, disappeared years ago and never came back, and you can’t leave til you pay your check, so there you are with no food, no way out, just wanting to know where the damn waiter went. How’s that search goin’, Bud? You finding any solid answers yet?”
'every time i see a horse i avert my eyes just in case it steals my soul.' (From Pepperazzi)
"That is a valid fear, Mr. Pepperazzi. According to the bible, animals such as horses don't have souls of their own. A shady character may be trying to steal yours in order to enter those pearly gates."

Possible favourite late 18thC incident in Scottish history is the time that after Thomas Muir was sentenced, Archibald Hamilton Rowan, the United Irish leader, published a Thing saying essentially "you had better let him go or I'm coming up there to fucking kill the Lord Avocate in a duel idc" and everyone in Scotland went oh so you are and ignored him in favour of going back to fighting each other until he suddenly showed up in Edinburgh like. ok where is Dundas I'm ready to kill him. and the government had to arrest him and then get Home Secretary Henry Dundas (Robert's uncle) to personally write to him to tell him to Leave in order to dissuade him at all (source)

Fyre sent me an article that made me Lose My Mind, so instead of sending 800 tweets about it, I decided to just write up my thoughts here
so, in re: ET Fox, 'Jacobitism and the Golden Age of Piracy' --
Fox is definitely exaggerating. His logic jumps from 'ship names and alleged toasts', to 'every pirate was one contact away from a confirmed Jacobite', to "a Jacobite maritime community" (296), with little evidence beyond each previous assumption. He does demonstrate a link with popular Jacobitism, but overstates pirates' political commitment by far.
There's one letter to George Camocke, a Jacobite naval officer, suggesting that the pirate fleet should unite under his command and take Bermuda as a Jacobite base, but the source is shaky, and it went nowhere once Woodes Rogers ousted the pirates. (It's I think from 1718 and unsigned? Possibly from Charles Vane and his crew? Fox only says that, "Through these contacts [unspecified, between Vane and English Jacobites] a letter reached George Camocke" (286), which is suspiciously vague, and I can't access the original to check. Either way, it would still only prove the committed politics of one crew.)
Fox also makes a lot of Archibald Hamilton, governor of Jamaica from 1710-16, who commissioned and profited from the anti-Spanish privateers who turned pirate and made up some of the original Bahamas pirates c. 1715. Since "it has been suggested that [Hamilton] was a Jacobite supporter" (283), Fox claims that these establishing pirates were also committed Jacobites, and therefore the whole pirate community that grew around them must have been. (Which leads to Fox then being baffled when there's no direct evidence of Jacobitism among some of them, such as the crews of Anstis, Fenn, or Rackham.) He relies on these assumptions, and then claims that every connection between pirates proves their mutual Jacobite sympathies.
It's much more likely (and in line with the historians I've read so far) that the Jacobite toasts and ship names speak to a broader anti-authoritarianism among pirates, with no evidence of committed Jacobite actions by them, eg, specifically targeting Hanoverian ships, or materially supporting or trying to support Jacobite rebels beyond that one letter. Indeed, the 1710s/20s pirates are generally agreed to be distinct for not adhering to religious/national loyalties like the C17th pirates usually did. (I'm so sorry, I haven't consolidated my notes yet, but I know Marcus Rediker goes through this, as does Kris E Lane, and I think Tim Travers and David Cordingly.)
Fox does identify a correlation between the rise and fall of Jacobitism and piracy over the mid/late 1710s, but attributes a pretty shaky causation: pirates ceased their Jacobite loyalties due to the suppression of Jacobitism in Britain and Europe. A much more obvious explanation is that both anti-authoritarian movements simultaneously flourished in the post-war, post-succession instability, then were both quashed as the new regime established itself and cracked down on rebels.
So, did many pirates espouse Jacobite sympathies? Yes! They named their ships in favour of Jacobite causes and rulers, and there are plenty of reports of them toasting to King James / the Pretender. (Which it must be said, although the sheer volume lends a ring of truth to the trend, individual claims should be taken with a grain of salt, as Jacobitism was a common accusation against criminals at the time, with or without a basis.)
Does that mean that the 1710s Caribbean pirate community was centred around a heart of politically committed Jacobites, as Fox argues, or largely motivated by Jacobite sentiments? Yeah, probably not.
Anyway, I am SO sorry that this article got me riled up XD the whole point of this is to say, I've never read anywhere that "many pirates were Jacobites driven out of Britain", which I KNOW wasn't even your main point, but I am unfortunately Insane. We can and should talk about expressions of pro-Jacobitism and actual political engagement among 'Golden Age' pirates, but what we know of their actual actions and espoused ideals doesn't speak to a trend of committed Jacobite politics beyond a general loyalty to rebellious causes.
#history#pirates#pirate history#Jacobites#Jacobitism#Togas does meta#this article annoyed me so much omfg#at every step Fox makes a sort of shaky assumption and then bases his next assumption entirely on that as if it's a proven truth#it's like IF hamilton was a commited jacobite and IF that loyalty was shared with the privateers and IF those privateers#retained and spread that belief among the growing pirate community and IF that was the belief that held the community together#then yeah sure i guess jacobitism was a core cause and concern for the golden age pirates#but that's a lot of fucking 'if's among a situation with a lot more obvious explanations#Fox is right that historians so far are probably ignoring the influence of Jacobitism on golden age pirates a bit#it really hasn't come up in all my reading so far and I've done... a pretty fair amount lol#but he goes so far in the opposite direction that it's kind of embarrassing#very BR Burg coded tbh XD (i say as if i've actually read burg >.> but all the reviews are forming a picture for me...)#EDIT: it's also worth noting that Jacobitism was rarely (never?) a charge laid against pirates in all the trials and moralising against them#which you'd think - if they were actually hardcore individual or broad-base supporters of the cause - might've come up more often#but anti-pirate arguments basically always revolve around the threat to trade and property therefore nation/empire#if lawyers and reverends wanted to argue that pirates were traitors - and they did! - you'd think they'd mention any actual treasons#EDIT EDIT: N: Harry M. Lewis (2021) George Camocke’s 1718 Proposal of a Jacobite–Pirate Alliance#The Mariner's Mirror 107:3 pp366-370#has better detail and context for that letter
