ㅤㅤthough it'd once seemed impossible, she'd actually managed to create something of a routine, despite her current predicament. she firmly believed she could get used to anything, no matter how unpleasant, and find a way to make the best of it. new orleans was beautiful, much more lively than mystic falls and more fun to explore. and as long as klaus didn't bug her any more than necessary, she could almost say she was having fun. still, she did her best to remain out of the way around the abattoir, attempting to be a guest that remained unseen and unheard. which was what made her freeze for a moment when she spotted elijah on her way to the kitchen; but she knew there was no way he hadn't noticed her presence, so she cleared her throat quietly. ❛❛ good morning, elijah, ❜❜ she greeted politely.

things have been bad for a while, but never this bad. he’d had injuries that stopped him from being all that mobile in the past, but he’d never really been in hospital for those other than directly after nightwing, had never faced the slow and painful recovery process. this was especially different, the injury not one that was as visible to him, the boy not fully processing that he had a head injury, that it was serious. he wants to be fine, and in the past he’d pushed himself beyond the limits of sore limbs. but this isn’t as simple, this isn’t just a little pain that he has to push through. and yet he’ll try, pushing himself up off of the hospital bed, barely getting one step before his head is spinning and he’s collapsing to the floor. its barely been two days since he woke up, he knows he shouldn’t be trying to walk on his own, but he doesn’t know how to handle an injury when he’s given the freedom to heal, when he isn’t on a strictly enforced timeline. he doesn’t hear them rush over, they’re positioned on the wrong side for it. so when hands find his shoulders kurt jumps, quick to shrink in on himself. he trusts them, he does, but he’s still full of adrenaline, his brain still stuck in the fight or flight he’d been surviving in for his entire life. “‘m fine.” whispered, barely audible. he’s not fine and he knows it, making no move to get up off of the ground because he knows he can’t do it on his own, he just doesn’t want to have to admit to as much.

"did... did you do this?" it's rare that he stops by the art room, only because it's all the way on the other side of the campus. he can walk, but after long days, he finds it tiring and a bit painful. the art show, though, was a good excuse to get out. see local art, blah blah. (he had tried to convince em to come, but xe had requested to stay home.)

"the sculpture, i mean." it's kind of obvious that they did, considering all the artists are near their work, but he's in a bit of shock. should he be? sometimes it's easy to forget just how talented some of the students are. "this is amazing."

ㅤㅤthe breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding finally whooshed out of her when he let go, though there was little that could be done about her racing heart and the cry of protest it let out when his touch left her. there needed to be distance between them, both literally and metaphorically. she couldn't come to care for him ⸻ how would she ever face anyone back home if she did? how would she face herself? she could practically feel the judgement and guilt as though it were a physical weight, suffocating her. she was just . . . so confused. so confused about her own feelings, and what klaus' true intentions could be. ❛❛ good idea, ❜❜ she responded weakly, desperately needing some time away from him to get her jumbled thoughts in order. her brow furrowed as she stared at the ground, her mind wandering. why . . why did she want to take back her harsh words and try to comfort him? no. no, she needed to hate him, or risk losing herself.

'I haven't felt anything in centuries.' He'd once told his brother, but that was never true. This was his only vulnerability, just another thing on a long list to loathe about himself, a romantic at heart. 'Vampires were not meant to love,' he'd also said to Elijah. This he believed. 

To the surprise of both, Klaus let her go. It wasn't even that she'd said anything new to him, anything he didn't know already, but just for a moment he'd been so sure he'd seen something else in her eyes. Something he'd so foolishly latched onto. Love was too strong a word for whatever lurked beneath the surface, but he still recoiled as though he'd been slapped. Because even if he had seen something in @elenaes just now, her words still rung true. Anyone caring about him was the most terrible thing they could do. 

The hybrid's lips drew back in a straight line, covering the ignoble kicked puppy expression as quickly as possible, "I think it's best if I escort you home now."

its a simple act of kindness, but one he wasn’t expecting. he knows that a lot of people don’t like him, that he’s long been viewed as little more than a rich asshole, that people don’t pay enough attention to see or care about what lays beneath. he’d assumed eddie would be the same, that he and his friends would take some form of joy out of violence against the pretentious rich kid. but this wasn’t just violence, it wasn’t just some fight that kurt got into that got filmed by a bunch of drunk idiots. this was his mother, it was a violent act that could’ve killed him. the footage hasn’t gained notoriety because it’s a rich kid getting hurt - though, there are people out there who revel in that fact - it was spread around so quickly because of the shocking nature of it, the horror of seeing a pristine family turning so violent, a boy who was already well known for his gymnastics before all of this. the act of not watching the footage is easy, and yet it’s not something that kurt even considered a possibility.

he has to avoid the urge to touch the side of his face, has to remind himself of the stitches, remind himself that picking at it could make things worse. he feels like such a spectacle, even when he’s hidden from the prying eyes of reporters. “really?” it’s impossible to hide his surprise, even the most basic acts of kindness are so unfamiliar to him that they’re shocking. he never expects kindness from anyone, not even those he’s closest to. though, perhaps it’s not so surprising anymore. now that the entire world knows about how violent his mother can be, perhaps kurt’s a lot easier to read than anyone ever thought before. “i wouldn’t blame you if you did. i think i’ve seen it a thousand times by now.” it’s hard for him to avoid, but even if he had more chances to avoid it he likely wouldn’t. there’s something about watching it that feels important; be it a way to punish himself, or a way to remind himself of who his mother really is. “i think a lot of people like to see a rich kid get taken down a peg.”
