Regular reminder Dune was published in 1965 and was not written to reflect modern middle eastern conflicts, if anything it's loosely about the Arab Revolt during WWI drawing heavy inspiration from Sabres of Paradise and Lawrence of Arabia, with the direct intention of obliterating heroic ideas of any single charismatic leader and by extention Campbell's hero's journey and the white savior trope.
#dune#id like to point out the wide use of russian and ottoman names very few ppl seem to catch amongst the obvious arabic and islamic vocabulary#is ottoman a word in this sense? turkic is probably what im looking for

Hey! I was reading the comments in 'Forgetting is a kind of mercy' and there was a long thread going on started by someone saying things about aang and Iroh and all and I see your reply saying "Inshallah you will find peace".
I laughed so hard, that my brothers thaught I had gone crazy. And I didn't know you were a muslim too! <3 Btw I LOVE your fic, you should write more fics, your writing is wonderful. I can't wait for the next chapter!
lmaooooo those comments were so wild. and that's what's left after i had to delete a few that were just insane. i'm not muslim, i was just speaking a bit of Arabic! jkfkjdsklkfskl but i'm happy it made you laugh <3
please don't encourage me to write any more fics, my WIPs are beginning to overpower me!!!
#little-cornflower-blue#my partner knows arabic so this is an osmosis situation#i just adopt some of the words into my vocabulary <3#i love ur username btw

hi silky!! hope you're well <3
for the ask game: 25 and 42
25. role model
quite a few! and for different reasons. my mom and older brother are the first to come to mind
42. favorite book(s)
the stillborn by arwa salih (will never stop recommending it to egyptian leftists), adrift on the nile by naguib mahfouz, أولاد حارتنا (children of gebelawi is the english name i think?) by naguib mahfouz, woman at point zero by nawal el saadawi, my people shall live by leila khaled, a river dies of thirst by mahmoud darwish (poetry collection but wtv), تغريبة القافر by zahran al qasmi
#inbox#arabic lit bias is very obvious#a couple of these i like for the reading experience i had not necessarily the material itself#adrift on the nile isn't the best of mahfouz's works by any means but it's so dear to me#because it was my introduction to his works#and it's such a jarringly different vibe than the rest of his books so i was surprised when i continued reading his other works#the last one i love because it was such a personally difficult read lol#the setting is very unfamiliar to me and the vocabulary reflects that#it was such an experience being submerged into a completely different environment than what i was used to#through words that i'd never heard of and a dialect i don't understand and a place so different from my own home

Alhmdulillah, I was able to study a bit using the apps I have in my cellphone. Besides Modern Standard Arabic, I also saw a bit of Levantine Arabic, it was so interesting! I learned that "Sir" is استاز and "Madam" is "ست". In shaa Allah I will keep going!

It made me tear up a bit...🥲
As somebody studying pedagogy in a broken education system, this truly makes me happy to see! Unfortunately it's so rare that we run into such great teachers (understandably of course, as most of them are as underrated as they can be, with their profession being dragged trough the mud in a million ways every day, it's no wonder they have no will to do anything better), so any example of a great teacher (in a pedagogical meaning) truly warms hearts.
Also - this is also a wonderful example of the fact that sometimes, the syllabus is the least important thing, and that the good teacher isn't always the one who knows and teaches their subject the best, but actually the one who can read his students and respond to their needs.
Ultimately, pedagogy is about that - helping your students be the best version of themselves. This quote is used too much and it truly annoys even me, but it's the best way I can describe it. Because, once you're sure that your students' cognitive functions are developed and functioning well according to their developmental stage, you need to focus on non-cognitive factors of learning process. And if those aren't satisfied, you can't expect your student to learn anything.
AND THIS GUY DID JUST THAT! He saw them being down (moderately speaking) and did the only thing he could do at that point, without messing too much with his probably stiff syllabus (which is a separate circle of hell), and that is to make their day a bit better, to give them another happy memory that they will be turning to when they are down again. And this is exactly what makes a good teacher! It's not always the knowledge of the subject (although, infinitely important factor!), but the art of pedagogy.

In which I reconsider
I think it’s probably time to admit that if I want to take a serious shot at learning Arabic I’m going to have to 1) spend time with textbooks and 2) probably suck it up and take a class. I was pleased with the way Busuu introduced the alphabet, but it went from that directly to “Okay, you know this now, and you’re ready for entire sentences in this tiny-ass font, right? Plus a bunch of symbols…

Duolingo Alternatives by Language
Disclaimer: I haven't used or tested all of them. All resources have different strengths, e.g. Drops being designed for vocabulary. They often aren't full alternatives for Duolingo or formal classes. I just wanted to compile resources for all languages on Duolingo to make the switch easier, especially for the less popular languages.
Feel free to also check out my collection of free textbooks
If you want a more detailed resource list for any of these languages (or perhaps one not listed here) you can send me an ask and I can see what I can do.
