first is the art I commissioned from my awesome friend and wifu @asm0s, and the second is also commissioned art from the equally awesome @stellawolfe30. thank you both so much for loving Apis and listening to me ramble about her and other ocs!
finally getting around to making a OC post for Apis, she doesn't belong to any particular fandom and is manly a comfort OC. she's a teddy Bear demon or Bearkin the teddy part being added due to her smaller-than-average size for her kind. (also because I was partially inspired to make her after watching clips from the Sleepy Princess anime) she knows minor illusion magic to glamor her appearance in public, her main ability is Volukinesis the manipulation of insects (specifically Bees and Hornets/Wasps) a trait she gets from her mother's side. as such she makes a living working with bees, selling honey and honey-related sweets at farmers' markets. later adding special plants and flowers after meeting her partner Chunhua and occasionally mentoring others wanting to take up beekeeping. she found that her talent could extend to hornets/wasp species and after a few years of trial and error was able to raise a colony of her own. thanks to being able to change their behavior over time, she was slowly able to get them to co-inhabit with her main bee colony as extra protection from outside pests as well as security to her home. she's married to a Monkey demon named Chunhua, and lives together on a small farm. originally their marriage had been an act to keep Apis's father from trying to arrange a marriage but the two ended up making it official. Chunhua does most of the farm work so Apis takes care of the housework and of course, handles the beekeeping. Extra Facts!: Apis is the middle child of 5 siblings, two older twin brothers, a younger brother, and a sister. her father makes his own mead, operating a small meadery with his eldest sons, with her stepmother running a connected store/bar. Apis's biological mother originally opened the storefront, and like Apis was a voluketic beekeeper, unfortunately, she passed away due to an accident. she's closest with her twin brothers and still keeps in contact, but she is in low contact mainly with her father and stepmother due to her decision to leave home, as well as marrying Chunhua. her younger half-siblings and she never had much of a relationship due to age differences and thus aren't really a part of the drama. her older brothers originally did visit and tried to convince her to return home but changed their tune after seeing their little sister thriving and happy. they were 100 happy in supporting the marriage lie and were just as happy to hear when they tied the knot officially. (although they were sad there was no wedding, but Apis and Chunhua made it up to them by letting them plan their first-anniversary party.) Apis and Chunhua honestly aren't PDA at all preferring to keep most if not all affections in privet. It's largely cause of that they preferred a courthouse ceremony over any kind of wedding, followed by a short road trip to various botanical gardens, fairs, and markets. Their "wedding bands" are literally just two painted metal rings they got at the souvenir shop at one of the gardens they visited. There are more but i feel like this post is really long so imma end it here, idk maybe if there's more i want to add i'll do another smaller post or i'll reblog an addon maybe. i will be doing a post for Chunhua soon to go with this one!
#oc art#my ocs#this is my first time doing anything like this AAAAHHH#i hope you like my girl#almost forgot to add that that is tangled star Nezha or stella's nezha.#he comes over once in a while for tea and gossip with Apis.

Hi Alpha Mama! I would like to announce to you it’s been officially over 2 years and a week from this day since I’ve adopted Asher and was Gifted Dancer! So I’m doing a nice big update on all my Alpha Tales to celebrate! 💛💛💛💛💛💛Asher(Beta G) and Pumkin have of course had their children! 2 Girls and a Boy, Valencia Lottia and Barrister! All coffee themed names lol! 💛Dancer(Paris) has grown so much and has joined a pack I like to call ‘The Herd’ and has made great friends with my Overtale Frisk(Spring) and Chara(Clover) he still enjoys visiting Asher a lot and the babies! 💛Poppy, Dahlia, and Peony have been enjoying the gardens and surprisingly have been attempting to hunt down a few things when they get to visit my shop- luckily they aren’t hunting bitties- I would much rather them have a grass hopper or a mouse then a bitty! Though I check them each time after I find they catch something- 💛Tsu’tey (Alpha OS) has settled and taken in Avi (Tilli NCG) as well as Api and Dutch(Dreamy’s Asgor) and their little ones as well as Chai(Milk Beta) Lullaby(Gentle Singing) Sleepy Wave(Great Stretch) and LazyTide(Great Bite) 💛 Ralu(Alpha P.) has settled in with Darling(BloodMoon) Amy(Omega OS) Atticus (Akita Boy) Miy(Dreamy) and Ati(Tilli) and a Skribbity has shown interest but I don’t know if they will attempt to join or just make friends- 💛 Valor (Alpha Sans) has actually taken great interest in LavaCake!(Helly) which I find interesting but he has also settled down with Mocha and Puddin (Omega P and S) so far he has been very gentle and careful with them which is really nice since I had a bit of worry since he’s more ‘rough’ if I remember correctly- 💛Rex(MK) has been wandering the territory with Prancer(Asriel) and both have been mostly enjoying their time together! 💛 Princess(BabyO OS) and Echidna are very happy! She keeps her mama nice and distracted from the others! Spressar(Gem) and Ribbon have been mostly doing their own things enjoying their own territories, though I feel like they could use a bit more interactive moments with the others- but I won’t push them- when their ready they will be ready- 💛 I am very pleased to say Piri (Pepper) as officially gotten with Malin!(Milkyway) they have been courting each other for a bit and it’s really freaking sweet!!! 💛 Tahitian has been wandering a bit as well but she mostly likes to stick to Aaron(Care Taker) who has been helping her get around a bit! She has been very open just like the many others with her! And has quickly started up friendships with many of Aaron’s little hitch hikers who like to follow us around or use us for a ride when lazy ^^’ that should be all of them-! It’s been an amazing time!
AlphaMama: Ohhhh that's really awesome! Thank you so much for giving me this update! I love to know how my bitties are doing around the world and their new lives!
💛Asher and Pumpkin are doing really amazing! The coffee touch is adorable! XD I'm glad Dancer have found their place among all of them! He is a brilliant one!
💛Poppy, Dahlia, and Peony are cute but can get really sneak ones when it comes to hunting, attention is really needed! I could recommend a little more variation of bugs for them to catch, like cockroaches for more fat nutrients, grubs are good too!
💛Tsu’tey (Alpha OS) can be a stubborn one sometimes, but has a really big heart~! ^w^ This is great!
💛That's a good size of the pack for Ralu(Alpha P.) to settle in, in general, they can get pretty violent and snap a lot, but with patience, they can become friendly enough to don't bite off any piece of the others ^w^ The Skribbity probably will come with a decision in a few days of searching around the packs.
💛Valor (Alpha Sans) can be really tiny but his bite is fierce for sure, but you can rest at ease, it's almost beyond a crime/taboo for an alpha (on my alphatale) to hurt omegas, and Alpha-Sans are really polite on this matter on regular cases.
💛💛It's so good to hear they are doing so well! >W< and of course, give time to the time and the things will be going on their own pace... You're truly amazing and very kind to give me this update!! I hope all things keep going for the best and more lovely days/nights to come for you and all the little ones! 💛💛

I know that people can be undeservedly smug towards vegans and misrepresent their arguments, or at least present the most strawmanable versions of their arguments without addressing more informed criticisms. For instance, my sister does not eat honey not because she thinks it's theft or exploitation of the bees, but because most honey sold in this country is not from Irish bees, but is a "blend of non-EU honeys" which contains a very small amount of actual honey and is bulked up with other syrups such as corn or rice syrup. This prices a lot of authentic beekeepers out of the market, which is bad for bees, because, as honey production becomes an unsustainable way for beekeepers to support themselves, they have to focus their efforts more on pollination, which forces the bees to travel longer distances, increasing their potential exposure to diseases and exhausting them.
She also feels that focusing on the honey bee exclusively takes away from efforts to support native bee species, of which we have 98 (only one is a honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera or the Northern dark bee).
These are, I think harder arguments to dismiss than "they grind the bees up in a centrifuge to make honey!" or similar.
THAT BEING SAID, I have met some people who are stunningly uninformed about how various animal products are produced. I once met someone who said that backyard eggs from happy, healthy hens, who were given their eggshells back as part of their feed to replenish the calcium they used to produce the eggs, were unethical because "Chickens only lay eggs when there is a rooster in the flock, so you are eating chicken embryos." Which... is not true. It is true that chickens bred for laying will lay more often than chickens bred for meat, and certainly a lot more than their wild ancestor, but a laying hen like a Rhode Island Red will typically lay 260 eggs a year (one a day, with them coming out of lay in the winter). Now, eggs you buy in the shop come from hens who live much less happy and shorter lives than the hens in my garden and if you wanted to abstain from eating shop bought eggs on ethical grounds that would be a pretty reasonable thing to do. But I have a much harder time accepting the argument that pet chickens who will be kept and cared for for their entire natural lifespan, well after they are too old to lay, are being unfairly exploited.

The National Zoological Gardens of Pretoria.
Da schnallt man ab!
Lekker Slaap!
Angie, Micha und der Hasenbär

This is what many people dont get. I actually got into an arguement with a local vegan store [note: This store and I have had issues since they set up shop] ever this because they tried to convince people that the bees are in danger and we need to leave their honey alone.
And I adore bees. So much. I love them. I grow flowers for them in front of my house every year. I change it up sometimes too so theres variety both for my garden, and so that the bees can get all the nectar they need. And when I mentioned that I bought local honey the store owners lost their damn minds.
Keep in mind, Im not a vegan, or vegetarian. I tried once but my system cannot handle the diet, I was hospitalized and I needed meat because of all my levels and such. So while I eat it, it's always sparingly and I usually go local if I can. They didnt like this about me either (eg. because ANYONE can go Vegan if they try hard enough, "Im just making excuses")
But when the bees got involved? Let me tell you I know some weird and unique facts about different bees and their keeping. The most common bee that we get our honey from, the honeybee (Apis Mellifera) is actually a very intelligent little guy. If they dont like the home they have? Its good bye. They up and leave.
Dangeorus home? No thank you. Not kept well? Good bye. Dislike the beekeeper? Well they'll find a new one. Bees arent creatures that can just be kept in a pen and locked up. They're well cared for because if they arent they just wont stay. Honey is good for you, better than agave, and bees make a lot of it. Listen to OP, and do your own research into bees and how we can help them. Because "taking all their honey" isnt whats harming them.
Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.

Beekeeping Shop
Apis bee supplies based in Ireland supplies all types of beekeeping supplies and equipment that help honey beekeepers to make their business grow.
Beekeeping Shop
About Company-
Apis Bee Supplies was started in 2018 on the shores of Lough Derg in County Clare in the courtyard of a 200year old Georgian House. The first year was very positive and the continued support from customers and beekeeping associations all over Ireland have helped us grow to one of the leading suppliers of beekeeping equipment in the country. We are still running our business from that very same courtyard however, now there are 4 of us in the team which makes it a lovely atmosphere to all work together.
The beehives are handmade in that courtyard by Chris Jeuken. Chris, having grown up on a farm in the west of Ireland, was always exposed to the practical aspects of farm life. As a young school entrepreneur, he started designing and making built-to-order, garden sheds, and other timber products selling them through his local network and beyond.
His continuing interests in and experience with woodworking have led him to focus on designing and making beehives in recent years. He personally started beekeeping after having spent a month working on a beekeeping farm in Wexford in 2013.

Gazania (African daisy) and Apis mellifera (Western honey bee)
VanDusen Botanical Garden
Yesterday, I visited VanDusen Botanical Garden looking for a little eye candy for the blog. After a while I noticed there were very few bumblebees but an awful lot of honey bees. A trip to the back of VanDusen solved that mystery.
The bee hives were branded, so I checked out the website of the company involved. The shop sells 30 different types of honey and boasted, “We have a number of varieties of pure local unpasteurized honeys including blueberry blossom, raspberry blossom, wildflower, and local Vancouver Urban honey.” I think I know where they get their ‘Vancouver Urban honey’ from - VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Tech trustbusting's moment has arrived
When it's railroading time, you get railroads.
When the railroads turn into the personal satrapies of rail-barons, you get trustbusters.
A couple decades ago, it was online service time. We had the users, the telcoms systems, the computers, the modems, so we got platforms.
We had that, but we lacked something important: effective antimonopoly enforcement. Lax merger laws allowed companies with access to capital markets to buy out or neutralize all their competitors, so we got monopolies.
Right on schedule, we're getting digital trustbusters.
Now, some people aren't technically sophisticated, but they do understand a lot about competition law. That's how you get meat-and-taters antitrust proposals like Amy Klobuchar's CALERA, which address the structural problems with antitrust law.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/06/calera/#fuck-bork
Klobuchar's bill is hugely important. The reason we have monopolies is that we stopped enforcing anti-monopoly law 40 years ago. Monopoly isn't a tech problem, it's everywhere from sneakers to glass bottles to pro wrestling to candy to aerospace.
https://www.openmarketsinstitute.org/learn/monopoly-by-the-numbers
Klobuchar's CALERA doesn't just seek to apply antitrust law to tech – it also explicitly restores the pre-Reagan basis for fighting monopolies: we fight monopolies because they concentrate power and corrupt our politics. All monopolies are guilty unless proven otherwise.
But though industries all attained their monopolies through similar tactics – predatory acquisitions and mergers, vertical integration – they also each have their own technical characteristics that must inform our demonopolization tactics.
Take emergency care: monopolists love ERs because we don't choose which ER to use, nor when. You can't shop for an ER from the back of an ambulance. You don't know going in whether you're going to spend $1m or $1k. And you'll buy whatever services the ER tells you to buy.
Or power-grids: demand for electricity is both inelastic (you need power when you need power) and price-insensitive, and that inelasticity increases with demand: that is, when it's freezing or boiling out, everyone wants electricity.
Tech, of course, has its own technical characteristics. Chief among these is its flexibility. At a deep, theoretical level our digital tools and networks are capable of interoperating with one another in ways that no physical technologies can match.
Think of the Australian rail-system. In the mid-19th century, would-be rail-barons laid differing gauges in hopes of conquering the nation's logistics and transport. For 150+ years, engineers have tried to solve the "multi-gauge muddle" by designing multi-system railcars.
Hundreds of designs for cars that retract and extrude different wheelbases have been tried, and none ever caught on. Instead, Australia is tearing up and re-laying thousands of kilometers' worth of track. With physical tech, "compatibility" often means starting from scratch.
Not so with digital tech. If you are an OS company whose rival has locked up all office docs in a proprietary format, you don't have to convince all its customers to abandon their documents and start over. You just make a compatible program:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/06/adversarial-interoperability-reviving-elegant-weapon-more-civilized-age-slay
With digital and physical tech, network effects drive high switching costs, but when it comes to digital, network effects are a double-edged sword.
With interoperability, a walled garden can easily become a feed-lot, where customers for a new service are neatly arrayed for competitors to come and harvest.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/01/twitter-and-interoperability-some-thoughts-peanut-gallery
Good tech policy emphasizes interoperability when it comes to demonopolizing the digital world. Long before the US ACCESS Act and the EU Digital Markets Act, Mike Masnick published his seminal "Protocols, Not Platforms" paper.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/01/twitter-and-interoperability-some-thoughts-peanut-gallery
And Daphne Keller's work on "Magic APIs" presaged the ACCESS Act's idea of forcing tech companies to expose the APIs they use internally so that competitors can plug into their services:
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20200901/13524045226/if-lawmakers-dont-like-platforms-speech-rules-heres-what-they-can-do-about-it-spoiler-options-arent-great.shtml
(that paper is outstanding, BTW, with clear-eyed assessments of alternatives, like a digital fairness doctrine, "common carriage" rules, an "indecency" standard for content moderation – basically a checklist for "So you've got a plan to fix tech – did you think of ____?")
Masnick's "protocols" are a vision for a decentralized, better internet. Keller's Magic APIs describe a legal path to getting there. My own work on Competitive Compatibility (nee Adversarial Interoperability) describes how we'll STAY there.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability
Because monopolies are good at subverting regulation, so any Magic API rule would be brittle – dependent on the tech companies not sabotaging those APIs by moving the important data-flows away from the mandatory APIs.
That's why we have to strip monopolists of the power to ask a court to block interoperators: take away the wildly distorted copyright, patent, terms of service and other legal doctrines that Big Tech ignored during its ascent, but now enforces against would-be competitors.
With both interop mandates and a legal right for new entrants to force interoperability through technical means, tech giants will face consequences if they subvert antimonopoly rules.
The choice becomes: either respect the intent of a mandate and preserve interop; or be plunged into a chaotic arms-race with competitors who switch to scraping, bots, and reverse-engineering.
All of this is incredibly wonkish, a highly specialized debate that involves highly technical propositions about how digital technology works today, how it used to work and how it might work – layered atop a similar, highly technical understanding of antitrust law.
The Venn overlap of "deep understanding of digital tech" and "deep understanding of antitrust debates" isn't so much a slice as it is a sphincter, and the debate has been equally narrow, but when it's railbaron time, you get trustbusters.
The tech monopoly/interop debate is going mainstream. Francis Fukuyama and his colleagues at the Stanford Working Group on Platform Scale have proposed an intervention similar to the ACCESS Act, where trusted third parties mediate between monopolists, new entrants and users.
The Stanford proposal calls them "middleware companies," but they're conceptually interchangeable with the idea of a "data fiduciary": companies that act as referees when a new co-op, startup or nonprofit wants to plug into a monopolist's service.
https://pairagraph.com/dialogue/4124f75013da40038c4cbff5ebdaaa51/3
This is clearly an idea whose time has come – it's present in the EU's DMA and the US Access Act, and latent in the UK CMA report:
https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/online-platforms-and-digital-advertising-market-study#final-report
Importantly, it's an approach that recognizes the distinctive character of tech – taking account of the power of interop to break open walled gardens and unravel network effects.
What's especially interesting about this work is that it appears to have been developed in parallel to pre-existing work from Masnick and Keller (and me) – it's a case of convergence between the tech-policy world and the broader world of policy.
After all, while Masnick and Keller's work is well known inside of tech policy, that's just our obscure, nerdy corner of the policy world – now they're escaping that corner, becoming self-evident to people from traditional policy backgrounds.
https://review.chicagobooth.edu/economics/2020/article/capitalisn-t-francis-fukuyama-s-proposal-rein-big-tech
My hope is that the trend continues – that we see ideas about Competitive Compatibility/Adversarial Interop join the idea of API mandates, so that we produce durable anti-monopoly systems, not just anti-monopoly rules.
Most important, though, is restoring an appreciation for the importance of interoperability in preventing monopolies and promoting technological self-determination for communities and individuals.
Because such a sensibility can escape the legislative world and be enacted via fast-moving, easier-to-use policy tools. For example, we could (should!) make interop a feature of all government procurement rules.
No school district should buy devices for students without securing the right to sideload the apps they need on them – imagine buying 50,000 Ipads at public expense and then having Apple boot the app you rely on out of the App Store!
Likewise, no district should buy Google Classroom without securing a legally binding guarantee not to block interoperators who want to integrate other ed-tech services into the curriculum, with or without Google's cooperation.
Procurement and interop are as old as the Civil War, when the Union Army demanded firearms and ammo that had multiple manufacturers. As the state-level Net Neutrality rules (which bar governments from using non-neutral ISPs) showed us, procurement can shape markets.
Procurement is just for starters. Right now, tech companies caught breaking the law are handed down fines that are less than the profits their lawbreaking generated – instead, we could demand interop as part of any settlement.
One major barrier to interop is contract law: terms of service, EULAs, noncompetes, arbitration, etc. States wield enormous power over contracting terms: states can declare certain contractual language against public policy and thus unenforceable.
If, say, California were to pass a rule nullifying the mountain of abusive garbage that has become standard in digital "contracts," it would be in a position to export fair usage terms to the country in just the same way it exports robust emissions standards.
Antittrust is primarily a federal manner (that's why 40 years of federal antitrust malpractice has been such a disaster). But every level of government, down to your local school board, can make a meaningful difference in tech antitrust.
Digital technology's inescapable, marvellous, terrifying flexibility can be translated into so many unique, powerful weapons for transforming the industry and empowering communities to control their digital lives and seize the means of computation.
