Female Speckled Hummingbird by Adam Rainoff Via Flickr: The Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys) is a delightful resident of the Andean cloud forests, and capturing this species at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, was a rewarding experience. This particular individual perched briefly among striking purple flowers, offering a perfect opportunity to highlight its warm brown plumage and characteristic speckled chest. The soft natural light filtering through the forest canopy provided even illumination, allowing the fine details of its feathers to shine against the vibrant greens and purples of its environment. Using a Canon R5 paired with a 100-500mm lens at 500mm, I had initially set the shutter speed to 1/1000 second in TV mode to freeze hummingbirds in flight. However, when this bird landed unexpectedly, I quickly captured the moment, knowing the R5’s advanced stabilization would maintain sharpness, even with this low shutter speed. The composition took advantage of the surrounding flora to frame the subject, creating an intimate portrayal of this elusive species. Encounters like these remind me of the privilege and responsibility we have as photographers to showcase the delicate beauty of nature. ©2021 Adam Rainoff Photographer

Dagua, Colombia
A Lehmann’s poison frog (Oophaga lehmanni) is released in the Colombian Pacific, in Valle del Cauca department. The poisonous frog has paid for the sin of its beauty with its near-extinction due to illegal wildlife trafficking, an ecological crime from which it is beginning to recover. This is because for the first time its reproduction has been achieved and almost 30 specimens were released to repopulate its habitat.

Buff-tailed Coronet by Adam Rainoff Via Flickr: The Buff-tailed Coronet (Boissonneaua flavescens) is a captivating hummingbird species, photographed at La Minga Ecolodge, near Cali, Colombia, in the heart of the Andean cloud forest. This particular individual perched delicately on a branch, surrounded by the soft, diffused light typical of the forest canopy at 1,900 meters. The bird’s shimmering green feathers, complemented by hints of bronze and its characteristic buff tail, contrasted beautifully with the muted greens and browns of the background. The natural bokeh created by the lens added depth and focus to this vibrant subject, enhancing the intimate connection between viewer and bird. I used a Canon R5 with the 100-500mm lens to achieve this shot. With a shutter speed of 1/125 sec and ISO 800, I relied on the R5’s advanced stabilization to produce a crisp image despite the slower speed. The overcast lighting softened shadows and reduced harsh highlights, making this an ideal moment to capture the intricate details of the bird’s plumage. For me, this image reflects the joy of bird photography—waiting patiently for fleeting moments and trusting the combination of technology and instinct to preserve them. ©2021 Adam Rainoff Photographer

The slum area Puente Nayero is home to more than 1,200 families, of which an estimated 95% have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to the conflict. With nearly 6 million displaced people, Colombia is one of the countries with most displacements in the world. The slum areas are dominated by paramilitary gangs who extort and oppress the local population. The citizens of Puento Nayero recently found the courage to kick the paramilitaries out and declare their neighbourhood a humanitarian zone. With the support from NGOs and a government program they are now striving to keep it safe. - 2018
