I cannot believe that the Peekaboo truthers were right all along!! That's like the 5th wacky theory that I completely dismissed out of hand that turned out to be true lmao. Never would've guessed that the PTA's big evil plan hinged entirely on manipulating a toddler.
That said, there's still a lot of room to speculate about the situation. Does the Peekaboo inside Dimitri have the same exact powers as the one inside the Dreamhub? What about the fragment of it that seems to be inside of Davy? Are they all fragments of one larger wight that was carved up 13 years ago, or somehow different instances of the same spirit? How many fragments are there in total? Is Davy responsible for it being in pieces to begin with? Does Spender's shadow spirit factor in here at all, or is it a piece of an unrelated puzzle? Why is Peekaboo's dream-room an old ship? Could his actual body be in a sunken ship at the bottom of the lake, like Davy Jones' Locker in his spirit trance?
Tumblr media
The stickers on the locker in Davy's spirit world could be a hint about the different Peekaboo's locations.
a vampire (the piece Davy uses to distort space)
a ghost (possibly just a reference to Peekaboo himself? or something we don't know yet)
a ZZZ (Peekaboo in the Dreamhub)
a star (Starchman??)
a burger (possibly another piece trapped in/with the Burgers? or a reference to the fact that they trapped the main piece in sleep)
a werewolf (Shrike? Jean? Cody??)
Notably absent is any reference on the locker to the piece that Dimitri has, unless he's somehow represented by the star, ghost, or wolf. (The lack of an obvious link from the locker to Dimitri was my main point against the Peekaboo theory before. oops)
...Has Peekaboo been psychically calling other spirits to Mayview this whole time just because it wanted to play???

look guys i actually did some spirit designs
[ID: the Hargreeves' spirits in the Paranatural au - or at least, the five of them that are kids in this au.
Luther's is an ape that looks like his body from the comics. Diego's is a creature that looks a bit like a small porcupine. Allison's is a large snake with its mouth duct taped shut. Klaus' is a blue raccoon with three eyes and a pink tail, and Viktor's is based off of the White Violin from the comics, except its head transforms into reaching arms. End ID.]
sorry, the ID got REALLY long this time. that's a summary for anyone scrolling, theres a more detailed one under the cut!
[ID: Luther's spirit is labelled First Simian In Space: THE MARTIAN APE. He looks like the ape that supplied Luther's body in the comics, drawn in the paranatural style; blue, with one eye. He is wearing an astronaut helmet and sitting in a coin operated rocket ship that is much too small for it. He has transformed the world around him into a scifi martian landscape; cardboard standups with doors and lockers scribbled on them are the only indication of the real world. Luther is sprawled on the ground staring in shock, while the Martian Ape says "Y'know, you should totally just kill your dad".
Diego's spirit is a very small creature that looks a bit like a porcupine.
Panel 1: Diego holds his spirit in his hands and says, "So, what's your name?". His spirit responds "I am called..."
Panel 2: A caption appears; Projectile Extraordinaire: KRAKEN. The image is in full color, focusing on Kraken, which glowers cutely and shows off her spines.
Panel 3: The same shot as panel one, except Diego now looks very skeptical. He says "..." and then "Why." Kraken responds "It sounded cool."
Allison's spirit is a giant green snake coiled around a tree branch, with a pattern down his back that looks like open mouths.
The first two images are centered on Allison, who is scowling in both. Someone unseen says "It can force people to do things, honey!" and "It's too dangerous to leave you alone with it." and finally, "So we fixed it."
The final image is of the spirit. He is captioned Muzzled Mind Controller: THE RUMOR. His mouth has been duct taped shut. He does not look pleased.
Klaus' spirit is a blue raccoon with dark purple legs and a fluffy striped pink tail. It also has three eyes.
Panel 1: The large colored closeup of Klaus' spirit. It is captioned Mystical Conartist: THE SEANCE.
Panel 2: Klaus asks it "With a name like that, what's your power?" The Seance, its nose just high enough to fit into frame, replies, "Oh, I can sense ghosts"
Panel 3: Klaus looks supremely unimpressed. In the background, a ghost says "Hi" to Allison and Luther, and they say "Oh, hey" back.
Panel 4: Klaus asks, "Seriously?"
Panel 5: The Seance, viewed from above, says "Hey, I can sense them even when they're not visible! Like behind walls and stuff!"
Panel 6: The Seance adds "Also I can float." It is demonstrating, floating about eye level with Klaus and emitting a cloud of cyan spectral energy as it does so. Klaus looks more pleased with this and says "Okay, that one's pretty good."
Viktor's spirit is a Wight, a spirit so warped by rage and pain that it has permanently been changed, its spectral energy has become white, and has gained massive, devastating power. It looks a lot like the design of the White Violin in the comics, but it manifests too many or too few arms from where its head should be.
There are three images of it. In the first, it is kneeling. It has manifested six arms in varying degrees of completeness, and all of them look sad.
In the second, the matter of its head has split into many small pieces that almost look like parts of mouths, save for two clawing hands. It screams, in the Wight spirit language from Paranatural, WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME.
In the third, the largest, its knees buckle as it stands and manifests one reaching hand. It is captioned Violent White: THE WHITE VIOLIN. End ID]

Okay honestly I am much more surprised by Coach Ape than I am about Disaster Baxter. And now I want to reread Paranatural again to look over all the foreshadowing I missed because I am sure there is a boatload.
Also is it just me or is anyone else really loving Sister Cat?

Paranatural Theory #44: Who is behind the mask of the Ape
After a many year hiatus, I have returned to you, my awaiting public.
I have spent my seclusion solely crafting a theory more venerated than any other meager speculation I’ve put forward before. I’ve read, re-read, and re-re-read the comic, the supplementary material, and the twitter posts created by that of one Zack Morrison, and through this analysis, I have reached what I believe to be a conclusion that is as true as the ground we walk upon: the identity of Mysterious Ape Cultist.
Tumblr media
Below I have compiled all of my evidence, my leads, my sources, and my ultimate conclusion. Please, continue at your own digression, for I am so firm in my believe, I must tag this as SPOILERS INCOMING.
it him.

Paranatural
Theory time.
I have an idea about this Ape guy.
Maybe it's…
Professor Bigfoot.
If he has a real name, I forgot it.
But, for my reasoning-
This Ape guy is pretty big, and has a somewhat similar build to Professor Bigfoot from what I can tell, there's also the obvious ape motif between the two and the mask-wearing. Furthermore, both speak very formally, and are involved in conspiracies of some sort. Also, while Bigfoot has a special font he speaks in, it starts to break down a bit by the end of Stephen and the Suspension of Disbelief.
Lastly, revealing a previously known minor character as someone with a major role is very much something the creator has done before.

I notice a lot of mecha RPGs tend to aim more 'real' what with modular weapons and settings aping Gundam with space wars. Do you have any mecha RPGs that are better for classic "There's an evil space empire invading Earth and all that stands between them is the creations of a quirky scientist, his hot daughter and a hot-blooded Japanese teenager (or 4)" styles?
A lot of depends on whether you're talking about settings flavour or mechanics. Giant robot RPGs do tend toward the crunchier end of the spectrum rules-wise, but that doesn't necessarily correlate with either a simulation-style approach or a thematic focus on gritty space politics. Like, Lancer is crunchy as hell, but it's not really simulating anything; in terms of its mechanical structure, it's basically Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition with giant robots.
In the absence of any more specific guidance, I'm going to assume that you mean games that are both on the lighter side rules-wise and feature not-terribly-serious settings.
If that's what you're after – and if you've no objections to Fate Core – you might have a look at Camelot Trigger, available as pert of the Worlds in Shadow anthology. (You'll also need Fate Core itself, of course, but it's pay-what-you-want.) As the title suggests, it's literally Arthurian knights in space, with giant robots. The rules basically treat giant robots as an overlay on top of your character's regular stats, with the robot's systems providing bonus stunts and skill substitutions in a framework that otherwise plays out as scaled-up personal combat, saving the trouble of needing to learn two different combat systems.
Alternatively, if the Apocalypse Engine is more your speed, there's Armour Astir: Advent. This one's notable both for the fact that its gameplay loop supports mixed groups where some players take on the roles of mecha pilots and others take on the roles of ground/support crew, if you happen to have players who are more interested in the command-room side of things, and also the fact that it's illustrated by the Paranatural guy. Still in early access, though the most recent update was just a couple of months back, so the project seems to be alive and kicking.
I'm also going to throw in a slightly off-the-mark plug for Harder They Fall. It's probably not quite what you're looking for because it's a one-shot game that revolves entirely around playing out the final epic battle of a super robot story without providing any tools for any part of the story leading up to that point, and it's kind of a pain to play online because conflict resolution involves knocking down rows of dominoes. (Yes, really!) However, it's got some very neat ideas to steal if you end up deciding to roll your own solution, so there's some potential value there. Plus, it's cheap.
(Finally, I'm going to touch on Beam Saber, because I know somebody's going to plug it if I don't. Beam Saber... like, it can do super robot, though that's not its primary focus, and the mecha combat isn't terribly crunchy as such things go; however, as a Blades in the Dark hack, its gameplay loop has a lot of moving parts, which takes it firmly out of the rules-light category if that's a priority for you. This one’s another early access title, and while the most recent core rules update was less than a month ago, most of the supplementary material hasn’t yet been updated to reflect those revisions.)
