i can't understand fans who complain about people shipping pairs that aren't canon or that don't make sense or didn't even meet each other during the story...
1- It's a FANDOM. It's normal having random ships that don't make sense with the canon plot.
2- This is also called "creativity", you can imagine possibilities/AUs differents from what the work og author showed us.
3- JACK FROST AND ELSA WERE THE MOST POPULAR SHIP IN 2013-2014!!! THE KIDS LOVED THEM!!!

OKAY REAL QUICK AS A “KID” (hate being called that but this fact strengthens the point) LET ME JUST SAY I THINK AO3 IS BEAUTIFUL AND SHOULD BE LEFT TO IT’S UNCENSORED GLORY.
The absolute joy I have felt reading fics on there? MWAH.
I’m guessing it’s in part stemming from the belief that censorship is for the public’s good. It’s not. It’s so not. It’s from a lack of understanding as most issues are. It’s this view of “censorship protects me from things I don’t want to see,” but what about the other perspective in this stance “oh my pride and joy that I spent hours on making for myself just got deleted… is my work valuable…? Is it worthless…?”
That’s not to mention the way the censorship can be used to manipulate people’s perception on things by leaving out details (blocking certain content). Now on a privately owned business that’s precisely what you’re signing up for the kind of content they allow. They’re 100% allowed to do that. But Ao3 is a non profit. The appeal of it is to showcase all literature people want to put on there.
Think of it like this censorship is like pseudoscience. It keeps out certain details and finds only the ones it wants. And no censorship is like science. All pieces of data included to allow people to form their own conclusions with out bias encouraged by the provider of that information.
Ao3’s purpose is to show the full picture of everything people want to put on there. Censorship goes against the very foundation of what ao3 is for.
“But what if i don’t want to see certain content—“ That’s kinda why we have the concept of tags so people can avoid works with tags indicating the work has topics they don’t like and people can search for fics via tags for fics with concepts they like.
Say it with me…
CENSORSHIP IN ART DOESN’T KEEP YOU SAFE IT KEEPS YOU CONTROLLABLE AND HURTS THE ARTISTS!!!
The fact that kids nowadays want ao3 to be censored— guys. Guys. Where is your sense of adventure? When I was 12, and homeschooled, and had unlimited internet access on my second hand laptop, all I felt upon discovering ao3 was unmitigated joy. A whole platform where people can be fucking weird and post toe-curling novel-length diatribes about ANYTHING. How beautiful is that?
And then you, the reader, can just jump in and post your own weird shit? And people might comment just to say “nice job!” Or “where the fuck is the next chapter” on your 20k coffee shop FNAF AU? Bro. Them’s the little things that make the internet worth anything.
Ao3 is so beautiful. I love scrolling past indescribably disturbing descriptions. I love knowing they have a place to be posted. I love knowing that, should I feel the urge to indulge, I can do so with no repercussions.
Mi familia. Mis amigos. Por favor. Take a step back and be grateful that not every facet of creativity has been locked behind an algorithm.

Been seeing a lot on "Censorship on Ao3/ In fanfic" and figured I should throw my two cents in, because I'm procrastinating rn.
SO, to start off the bat (Batman pun intended. Shut up.) I believe censorship in writing is stupid to begin with because have you SEEN what kinda books are out there??? Like, writing is one of those things, whether it be an original piece or fan fiction, you don't censor or restrict writing. You write the f*cked up sh!t, the most horrifying things known to man, and roll with it because it's an expression.
Now, do I want there to be porn about children? A child and an adult? Do I wanna read adoptive sibling incest? Do I wanna live in a world where people approve of romantic relationships between adoptive siblings/ relatives? Not particularly, but if we get into censorship, well censorship is for children, flat out, it is something for children who can't handle things that upset them.
If we censor incest porn and romanticized paedophilia, then we're gonna end up with people saying "Well, I think forced incest porn and paedophilia, even if it's painted in a bad light, should also be censored." Then, okay, all incest and paedophilia is now banned in fiction, cool, okay, congrats cop.
Then we have people coming in, more people, and they go "Well, I think that gay porn is bad, along with transgender characters! It's paedophilia!" Then, y'know what happens next? Homophobic and transphobic people win and now all LGBTQIA+ media is gonna be censored because many idiots think of it as paedophilia or child grooming to be gay and or trans.
Now all porn in censored, LGBTQIA+ content is censored, and with these things censored, what's stopping them from saying swear words shouldn't be allowed in fanfic? What's stopping them from saying age gaps— even if they're between a forty and seventy year old— are paedophilia, enemies to lovers is toxic, childhood friends to lovers is incest, et cetera, et certa..?
My thing is if we allowed censorship of ANYTHING then what's stopping more than just the "worst" things being censored? It's a trickle effect.
Now, I don't want a damn soul calling me a pro shipper or labeling me as anything, because I do not want those labels. I do NOT approve of incest or paedophilia relationships, I have blocked every Batcest shipper I've come across on this site minus my one moot who is to cool to hate for it, but I don't think they should be censored— "But that makes you a pro shipper/ dark shipper/ potato skimmer!"— no, it doesn't, f*ck your labels, I literally hate those labels. I don't use them, or DNI's, for a reason. They are stupid and I don't wanna be placed in a one size fits all box over my opinions.
I also feel like if you are begging for censorship you're just to lazy to use the "Exclude tags" "Exclude Relationships" and or the "Exclude crossover" options on Ao3, and have never used a block button in your life. You CAN very well censor whatever you want, if you simply do it yourself instead of being part of the problem. It's like you wanna play internet police, and literally nobody should like the police.
"Protect the children!" Be so fr that's the parents responsibility and also nothing stops a queer ten year old from wanting to read Creepypasta yaoi and trans Jeff The Killer.
Anyways, I wrote this with nothing but fried chicken and half an orange soda in my system, so, my apologies for the incoherent mess I just threw out onto the screen.

!!this user is ANTI-CENSORSHIP for ao3- just use the tags properly!!
WITH the caveat that if you are writing smut fics about real people- that’s not okay. Period. Ever. (unless you have their consent)

People screaming for censorship on AO3 are so absurd! There is literally a whole tagging & search system, where you can exclude tags and content you don't want to read.
I was raised on Wattpad OneShot Collection Books. One FanFic / Book comprised of many one-shots that you would read consecutively. We didn't get warnings or content descriptions - not even summaries most of the time. If you were lucky you'd get three emojis for your interpretation before you started reading. Sometimes the books had "themes" the one-shots had in common.
The number of times I've been halfway through a rape scene before I realised what it was (because CNC, BDSM, random kinks, and actual rape were in the same book, after each other, untagged) is insane.
I ended up reading the end of bigger fanfics first to see whether the main characters would survive.
On Ao3 I've stumbled upon dark stuff in places where I hadn't expected it - but you can see what it is from the tags & descriptions, and then you can just NOT CLICK ON IT. It is that simple.
You can implement your own restrictions and "censorship" without harming the entire fanfic community. The stuff being on there is not an issue if you don't seek it out.

It was on another website but I just saw someone cite Canada’s (some say overly broad) child porn law to claim that Ao3 allows CP and that content should be censored.
Gentle reminder to everyone that Ao3 is based in the US and the only CP laws that matter are the US ones which do not include written works of fiction.
I’m kinda laughing because can you imagine the shitstorm if Ao3 even considered using other countries laws to determine what would be allowed on the site? All the queer fic would just be gone considering the number of countries where any depiction of homosexuality is illegal.

Ao3 does not need an algorithm, you're just lazy
Ao3 does not need a 1-5 star rating system, you just want to bring down authors writing for FREE
Ao3 does not need automatic censorship, it is an archive, therefore anything can be posted
Writing or reading about something illegal does not mean the author nor the reader condones it, if that were true, you could never read a story involving anything negative
Purity culture is ruining fan culture and you all are fucking annoying

The “That’s immoral you shouldn’t write that, we need to get that taken down” discourse on tiktok right now is PISSING ME OFFF
Wdym you want censorship for a literal ARCHIVE are you fucking stupid
Ao3 was literally founded to preserve works that were largely getting taken down due to censorship
Censorship is the opposite of what Archive of Our Own stands for
The TAGS and WARNINGS are there for a REASON. Use them and stop complaining
The universal rule—don’t like, don’t read
It’s THAT simple

GET KOSA TRENDING.
STOP SCROLLING NOW!
AS OF FEBRUARY 21ST, 2024, WE GOT FIVE DAYS UNTIL THE DAY OF DECISION OF THE KOSA BILL, WHICH WILL CAUSE MASS CENSORSHIP ROUND THE INTERNET IF PASSED. WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND CONTRIBUTE. I'M NOT GIVING UP ON YOU ALL.
(IMPORTANT UPDATE: Kosa will not necessarily pass on the 26th. It only has the support to pass in Senate, and we STILL HAVE TIME. That being said, time is of the essence.)
WE'RE DOWN TO THE WIRE BUT WE CAN'T GIVE UP YET. IF WE GIVE UP, EVERYTHING IS OVER. IF WE DON'T, AT LEAST WE HAVE A CHANCE.
I'M THE ONE WHO SOUNDED THE ALARM, AND I'M NOT GOING TO CURL UP AND DIE YET.
Reblog this post in every LEGAL way you can under the Tumblr guidelines with the appropriate tags. TELL AND TAG EVERYONE YOU KNOW, then add the tags to see below... and more if you can think of any complying.
Visit badinternetbills.com if you want to find a way to defeat KOSA. It WILL NOT take much of your time. Reblog with any other information or sources, too-- but make sure to reblog if you can.
Reblog if you support lgbtq+ content.
Reblog if you support questioning queer youth and/or abused youth getting the information they need.
Reblog if you support Ao3 and/or other sites that wholeheartedly preserve talentedly made media.
Reblog if you're going to repost this on other sites than Tumblr and spread the word across Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, or elsewhere, alongside the link to badinternetbills.com.
Reblog if you think KOSA is unfair and shouldn't be anyone's problem -- including the adults ALL OVER THE DAMN EARTH forced to face the mass censorship it causes because "think of the American Children!".
Reblog if you support internet activism and Palestine.
Reblog if you hate fascism or censorship, and don't want actually serious and helpful conversations censored on the internet.
Reblog if you value the internet in any way at all whatsoever.
CHECK THIS PETITION, TOO! https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-kosa?recruiter=1331807538&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf&recruited_by_id=57368c40-d0fd-11ee-98f7-2175430f819f&share_bandit_exp=initial-36809664-en-US
(Also, please reblog with at least "stop kosa" as a tag and not "kosa". I made the mistake of not adding just "kosa" as a tag...)
We won't let this stand any longer. Let's start a riot and get this trending.
(Update: this is outdated, but we should still talk about it. Get Kosa trending.)
