i actually never ever want AO3 to be censored bc nothing is more fun than reading the tags on a fic and going âhuh. didnât know there was a market for that.â

It was on another website but I just saw someone cite Canadaâs (some say overly broad) child porn law to claim that Ao3 allows CP and that content should be censored.
Gentle reminder to everyone that Ao3 is based in the US and the only CP laws that matter are the US ones which do not include written works of fiction.
Iâm kinda laughing because can you imagine the shitstorm if Ao3 even considered using other countries laws to determine what would be allowed on the site? All the queer fic would just be gone considering the number of countries where any depiction of homosexuality is illegal.

Fuck those people, really. I was younger than 15 when I had sex for the first time. When I was a kid, there was also a 12yo kid at my school that got pregnant from consensual sex with another 12yo kid (something that mostly happened, because those kids were not properly educated and did not even know pregnancy was a thing that could happen).
And look. I also was abused as a kid, without going into too many details. Nothing anything as drastic, as the stuff I write about. But you know what? Writing some of it is actually helping a lot working through some of the stuff.
And you know the best part: It does not hurt anyone! It literally does not hurt anyone. Even if someone uses the stuff to get off on, it does not hurt anyone. Amazing, the power of fiction, isn't it?
How about this: no *explicit* material involving minors under 15 on AO3. That seems reasonable. If you admit that teens get around age restrictions AND that abusers can groom with them, then something has to change. That involves placing a fair chunk of stories under more stringent lockdown. Yeah AO3 can't go, and you fandom vets are always harping on about how censorship sank previous spaces, but goddamn is there no way to protect the the more vulnerable fans without raising your hackles?
1. How do you define explicit? Does this mean no depictions of child abuse, even for the purpose of telling a story about how wrong it is and showing a victimâs recovery? Can younger teens have realistic sexual encounters in stories so long as nothing is shown on page, or is it wrong to imply explicit goings-on even if theyâre not depicted? Where, exactly, do we draw the line between heavy petting and sex? Can a character have a wet dream or masturbate? Can a character think about sex in detail, even if theyâre not depicted having it? Iâm not trying to be difficult: Iâm just trying to make it clear that what youâre proposing, even when you phrase it simply, is inherently difficult to implement. Stories would have to be vetted and actively moderated, a massive undertaking that AO3 isnât equipped to manage, and any such process would still ultimately hinge on individual judgement, which means youâd still have people dissatisfied with the outcome. Â
2. Teenagers who choose to ignore age-ratings and warnings for the material they consume are responsible for their own experience beyond that point: it is not the job of authors or the website to say, âOkay, we know this content is explicitly meant for adults, but letâs make it less adulty just in case a teenager gets in here.â You canât protect people from their own bad judgement and its consequences without making their lack of responsibility someone elseâs responsibility, which is decidedly unfair.Â
3. Abusers groom victims with a wide range of material and arguments, and have done so long before the existence of AO3. Whenever this happens, we blame the abuser, not whatever story they used to justify themselves. This is also why, when murderers or other criminals take their inspiration from crime fiction novels or psychologically darker works, as has happened on multiple occasions, we blame the criminals, not their taste in fiction. Locking down on what can be written about child abuse wonât get rid of paedophiles, but it will make things more difficult for victims who use fanfic as catharsis.
Hereâs the thing: tagging works on AO3 is how we protect vulnerable fans, by giving them tools to navigate away from distressing themes or content. Taking something away from one person so its mere existence doesnât upset someone who was never going to read it anyway isnât a protective act, but a judgemental and dismissive one. To use an analogy, there are plenty of people in the world with deathly nut allergies, but that doesnât mean we ban an entire food group: it means we label things that have nuts in them, even trace amounts, so that nobody gets hurt. Do accidents still happen? Yes! Are some people assholes about food allergies and dietary restrictions? Yes! But does that mean the solution is to ban nuts entirely? No! And itâs the same with fanfic.   Â

GET KOSA TRENDING.
STOP SCROLLING NOW!
AS OF FEBRUARY 21ST, 2024, WE GOT FIVE DAYS UNTIL THE DAY OF DECISION OF THE KOSA BILL, WHICH WILL CAUSE MASS CENSORSHIP ROUND THE INTERNET IF PASSED. WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND CONTRIBUTE. I'M NOT GIVING UP ON YOU ALL.
(IMPORTANT UPDATE: Kosa will not necessarily pass on the 26th. It only has the support to pass in Senate, and we STILL HAVE TIME. That being said, time is of the essence.)
WE'RE DOWN TO THE WIRE BUT WE CAN'T GIVE UP YET. IF WE GIVE UP, EVERYTHING IS OVER. IF WE DON'T, AT LEAST WE HAVE A CHANCE.
I'M THE ONE WHO SOUNDED THE ALARM, AND I'M NOT GOING TO CURL UP AND DIE YET.
Reblog this post in every LEGAL way you can under the Tumblr guidelines with the appropriate tags. TELL AND TAG EVERYONE YOU KNOW, then add the tags to see below... and more if you can think of any complying.
Visit badinternetbills.com if you want to find a way to defeat KOSA. It WILL NOT take much of your time. Reblog with any other information or sources, too-- but make sure to reblog if you can.
Reblog if you support lgbtq+ content.
Reblog if you support questioning queer youth and/or abused youth getting the information they need.
Reblog if you support Ao3 and/or other sites that wholeheartedly preserve talentedly made media.
Reblog if you're going to repost this on other sites than Tumblr and spread the word across Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, or elsewhere, alongside the link to badinternetbills.com.
Reblog if you think KOSA is unfair and shouldn't be anyone's problem -- including the adults ALL OVER THE DAMN EARTH forced to face the mass censorship it causes because "think of the American Children!".
Reblog if you support internet activism and Palestine.
Reblog if you hate fascism or censorship, and don't want actually serious and helpful conversations censored on the internet.
Reblog if you value the internet in any way at all whatsoever.
CHECK THIS PETITION, TOO! https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-kosa?recruiter=1331807538&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf&recruited_by_id=57368c40-d0fd-11ee-98f7-2175430f819f&share_bandit_exp=initial-36809664-en-US
(Also, please reblog with at least "stop kosa" as a tag and not "kosa". I made the mistake of not adding just "kosa" as a tag...)
We won't let this stand any longer. Let's start a riot and get this trending.

Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. Iâm so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You donât have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.
#personal#ao3#archive of our own#fanfiction#fandom#anti censorship#not to suck ao3 off but Iâm sucking ao3 off bc Iâve lived through other fic sites and no one does it like they do

saying ao3 needs to censor certain content is like saying a museum can't have still life art that includes strawberries because you don't like them.
these are not real strawberries. you do not have to, and in fact cannot, eat them. no one with a strawberry allergy will be harmed by looking at them. no migrant workers were exploited in the picking of these strawberries. there were no questionable farming practices or negative environmental impacts from growing or transporting them.
because - and i cannot stress this enough - they are not real strawberries.
if you don't like strawberries, you don't have to look at the paintings. in fact, you can get a map of the museum that lists what works are in what rooms and just. not go in there. if you see one by mistake, you can look away. just keep walking. there's plenty of other stuff to see.
yes, real strawberries can cause real quantifiable harm to real people.
but again. these are not real strawberries.
you may have whatever feelings you like about strawberries, and so can i. you can draw and write about whatever fruit floats your boat, and so can i, even if that happens to be strawberries. and we can hang our art side by side in the same gallery, provided you understand that my strawberries are not about you (and your kumquats are, shocker, not about me) and that - and this is true - neither are real.
and when the fascists break down the doors and grab all the strawberry paintings and heap them in the street and set them on fire, please know that they are coming for your kumquats next.
so if you want a place where you can show off your beautiful kumquat art safely, you're gonna have to tolerate having some strawberries in the next room.
and that's okay. because the strawberries aren't real.

"guys I do not condone any of this in real life" "this is fiction" "consent is key. this is only fiction" "murder is bad irl" â I wish fanfic authors didn't feel like they had to clarify this in author's notes or else they might be accused of being abusers or worse (I admit that such disclaimers are also something I personally use for my own stuff because I feel like I had to make it clear). like... people used to not care if an author wrote dead dove fics because people used to understand that ao3 fics are not a reflection of someone's in real life views or morality in any way. people used to understand that fanfics mean what they mean; fan fiction. none of it is real. maybe it's purity culture that normalizes witch hunt and censorship in the past couple years, and therefore authors feel like they have to clarify that just because they write about violence or noncon stuff doesn't mean they're murderers or sex offenders in real life. and I think it sucks that these things (purity and cancel culture?) have made authors feel like they have to apologize for the art they created instead of being proud of their hard work and all the dedication they put into creating these art. artists should not have to feel like they have to apologize for creating art that isn't all rainbow and sunshine. artists should not have to be made to feel ashamed of their own art if it's not all rainbow and sunshine.
I donât agree with the âyou can write noncon and dark fics as long as you make sure your readers get the message that these things are badâ or âyou can write noncon and dark fics if itâs your way of coping with your traumaâ take either. because writers do not owe you anything. the message writers want to send to their readers â whatever that message may be, if thereâs any message or moral of the story for readers to take from the stories at all â is none of your business. why writers write what they write is none of your business. remember âdonât like donât readâ. no one forces you to read anything you donât like. dark and noncon fics are a form of creative writing and creative writing is a form of art. you canât pressure artists into creating art that âfit your moral compassâ nor can you apply your own moral compass to artists to determine if they can create dark art or not, if their reasoning behind creating dark art passes your moral compass. like⊠what artists create and why artists create are none of your business. and you donât get to shame artists for creating art that you hate / art that disgusts you. what you can do is ignore the art because it clearly was not made for you and thatâs okay. what isnât okay is you harassing artists because you donât like the things they created.
writers, embrace and be proud of your works. as long as all the trigger warnings are tagged properly, you have nothing to apologize for.

HR9495 ON ITS WAY TO SENATE
Sadly the nonprofit orgs killer bill passed the house and is now on its way to the senate, endangering orgs such as ACLU,EFF,FTF, Internet Archive, AO3 ( @transformativeworks )and any fighting for human rights. Take some time to voice your disappointment at the reps who voted yes on this terrible bill, and thanks the rep that voted against it. However the next step will be to focus on the Senate, here you can find your senators: https://www.senate.gov/senators/ If your senator is a democrat, you can use this script: "I am calling to urge my representative to vote no on H.R. 9495 . This is a dangerous bill would give the Trump administration unilateral power to label any non-profit as terrorist supporting and shut it down without due process. I am calling on my representative to defend civil rights organizations and oppose this bill. Thank you.â You can also tell them you'll vote for them if they vote no on this bill. Anything goes. if your senator is republican/MAGA, use their own words against them :
"As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 9495. This bill poses a dangerous threat to the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment and must not pass the Senate. It grants any incoming administration unchecked authority to revoke the tax-exempt status of non-profit organizations without oversight or due process. Such government overreach is not what the Founding Fathers envisioned for our democracy. This bill undermines the principles of free speech and freedom of association, cornerstones of American liberty.
H.R. 9495 threatens to pave the way for political suppression, allowing the government to selectively target and shut down organizations based on ideological disagreements. This could affect any non-profit, including churches and conservative groups, as well as organizations that champion human rights and civil liberties. Regardless of political leanings, this bill sets a chilling precedent that no American patriot should support.
While situations relating to the hostages deserve careful attention, they can and should be addressed in a separate, narrowly tailored bill. H.R. 9495, however, is a broad, unconstitutional overreach that strikes at the heart of free speech and freedom. It is unpatriotic and incompatible with the values we hold dear as Americans.
I implore you to stand as a defender of liberty and uphold the rights of your constituents. Be a patriot, listen to the voice of the people, protect our God given right to free speech as Americans, and reject this dangerous legislation. Vote NO on H.R. 9495. Thank you, God Bless and God Bless America." (Taken from here )

Ao3 authors, please learn to not insult people and be âmorally superiorâ in the tags
Instead of tagging ânoncon is grossâ or ânot noncon because thatâs problematicâ, for example, just put âenthusiastic consentâ or âconsensual sexâ in the tags. It makes things a whole lot easier for people to filter and know whatâs going on.
I really donât care that you think noncon fics are bad or whatever, I (and many others) will be more likely to read your fic about two boys who are deeply in love if you arenât an ass about your morals in fiction :/

this is a joke, right?
apparently, AO3, just like Twitter (and I believe, Tumblr) now censores the word f**k and replaces it with freak.Â
all of my smut has been censored.
do you realize how ridiculous it looks when someone says in the text:
âcome on, FREAK meâ ?!?!?
what the actual f*ck, AO3?!?!?!?
EDIT: this is a disaster. my smut looks so ridiculous now. what I also donât understand is: cock and penis is allowed but f**k is not?!?!?

if you want to help, stay off of ao3 for the time being. The attackers are ddos-ing the website and the fewer server pings we add, the easier it will be for ao3 to fix.
UPDATE: While the organization claiming responsibility for the attack claims it is for "LGBTQ and NSFW content", ao3 has said that this is likely not the actual reason.

Okay. Real talk for a second.
I think what bothers me the most about this post is how this person is spreading puritan rhetoric, making people paranoid, uncertain, and fearful about the media they consume and create... And then selling the cure to those fears back to them, through the same community that created all those fears in the first place.
"You think you're a freak because of things we instilled in you. You will always be welcome in the community that instilled it in you."
It's freakishly cult like. I really hope people don't fall for this.

Saw a post of an anti saying that they are leaving AO3, as they are too uncomfortable to post their fics there now. The reason? They found out one of their long time readers was a proshipper, despite their fics having proship dni. And how "that includes silent readers too, I don't want you all looking at my content."
My brother in christ, you are posting on the fiction freedom site. The proshipping site. Dnis aren't god damn restraining orders. They are one tool in helping you display your boundaries. It's still on you to enforce your boundaries. You post something publicly, you forfeit your ability to regulate who can view your work. If you're obsessive enough, you can regulate who actually interacts with your work by stalking each person in the kudos list, comments, or bookmarks and then blocking snyone you don't like, but you do not get a say on who may silently read your posts. Not unless you private your work and only show it to specific people.
And if you donât want proshippers to interact, get off the profic site.

i saw an instagram post complaining about âproshippers finding mouthwashingâ and i just want to say. the freedom to depict sexual assault in a video game is a basic proship attitude, actually.
