Bestie I wanna preface this by saying I fully understand the abuse response of freezing and just being a doormat and the fear of standing up for yourself and I don't expect you to like. Actually Do This but I just thought perhaps it might help to have something reinforced from the outside: you are no longer a teenager trapped in your mothers house and forced to be under her thumb. You are a fully grown adult and she is, at this point, trespassing in your apartment that you pay for after showing up uninvited. Obviously I want you to be safe, but I do think you owe it to yourself to tell her that she needs to leave. It is fucking INSANE she and your father are putting you through this because they cant handle their own BS. Maybe talk it out with Owen so he can back you up, bc we know he will. You are not that scared little kid anymore, no matter how much she may make you feel that way. You shouldn't have to go through this.
Man, I so totally knew something like this was coming because tbh, even i'm getting tired of my bitching.
I absolutely agree with everything you've said, I just do not know how to force myself to go through with it, on god. I have been trying to build a spine for YEARS. I'm still utterly stumped.
Also let me offer an apology for letting this spiral turn me into a neurotic lunatic lately, that's not what I'm on this hellsite for.
Taking this to heart (and intense visceral consideration), let me take a moment to articulate why this is so fucking hard for me for the sake of like, putting things into perspective and also the trauma response of overexplaining things so I don't feel like a fucking idiot and just in case anyone wants to play psychotherapist for a few seconds and shoot me some advice. (tw for child abuse and general trauma dump below)
I used to argue with this woman almost on the daily, but eventually your own mother beating the living fuck out of you tends to break you down and now adult Adri is forced to live with this weird child-like need to be A Good Kid™ to A) avoid getting the living fuck beaten out of me (unrealistic), and B) i don't fucking know, get validation and love??? Who fucking knows. She was sobbing to me how I'm all she's got left because my sister refuses to have anything to do with it (she's the meanest bitch i've ever met, but at least she's got her priorities straight) and little beaten down Adri is like "Oh, that means I have to step up and do good, my poor mother who used to beat the living fuck out of me, i'd be *reads verbatim the shit she used to throw at me tattooed on my fucking hand* 'an evil ungrateful little bitch' if I refuse her."
Also taking into account what a paranoid nutjob she's become, I for SURE know that I will suffer Consequences™ should I show an ounce of defiance, I just don't know WHAT.
ANYWAY. That's what's all on my plate right now.
She offhandedly mentioned "If I can't find a new place then I'm going to have to go back home I guess" and at the risk of sounding like an awful person making someone go back into an abusive situation, I just kinda was like "Will you be okay there?" but forced myself to clam up and not object, so that's a potentially open door out.
I was literally sick with stress earlier today, so something's got to give at this point, and I know it's gotta be me. Because nothing's gonna get done if I don't do something. And I appreciate the tough love here, I really do, it was a good kick in the ass to make me pull myself together. I'm just sitting here with my head in my hands trying to figure it out. I will probably wait for Owen to get home to talk about this, and then -gestures vaugely- we'll see what we'll do. Hopefully whatever it is, it'll be asap.

Shakes you so you tell me more about morble
hhh. hhhhhh. hhhhh. okay. (VISABLY SHAKING). I'm so normal about him. recetnyl I've just straight up been putting hi in situations. like lowkey. car wrecks. high speed chase. just out fucking wandering for a week. shit like that. one thing I've been playing around a lot with in my head about him is like. ermm. ermmm. fuckin. fucking. getting sick of the mundane of his own life. Like this guy went from 12 years of constant fighting and adventuring to like. being a middle schooler again. and then he just had to grow up in a world that nobody knew nothing he did. like isolated. nobody gets him. idk. that gets me thinking that he would probably get into a high stress situation in one way or another and just. work with it. He'd just jump head first into it to feel excitement again. And everybody who knows him is just like "Dude what do you mean you're bored? you have like the most interesting life of anyone I know you literally go wandering and fight with fucking swords. You drive carelessly on a motorcycle fym you are bored?" and he just sighs like. it's not the same to him. my go to is to put him in a speed chase with a cop before he fucking. swerves off and hides for a second to loose 'em and then just carries on. I like him.
also ALOS SLASOOSOALSAOAOS. disstress I like to distress him. putting him in distress is soooo much fun 2 me twirls my hair kicks my WWHAT IS PLAYING WHAT IS IN MY EARS. okay sorry I'm normal it was jsut the inisound mind ost. I'm normal. anyways distressing him. I like putting him in carwrecks every now and then or like spitting up blood. I like breaking his legs in car wrecks and then he has to fucking heal them with magic or hwatgever for a second because. (vaugely gestures). uhm. uhm. I also mentioned him wandering. I like to make him wander. he'll take like a week out of the summer to just literally go town to town and explore and junk. very fun. uhm. uhm. uhm.
OHHH I like th e uhm. Nicotine withdrawl it's neat. again I put him in distress it's the best. when he almost got killedbecause he was stupid and fought a dragon he started smoking basically as a coping thing. He was a heavy smoker for about a year before Coraline was like "hey dude. shouldn't you like. cut back maybe???" and he was fuck. you're right. So he cut back BUT. when he ermmm when back to his own timeline. he didn't have access to them or whatever so he was like FUCK. and basically cold turkey withdrawl. sucked. he's over it now but I like thinking about it. cranky ass 13 year old that really needs a cigerette. neat 2 me.
okay that's all I have I think . anyways TYYYY TYYYY KISSES YOUR CHEEK. I like morble he's soooo neat 2 me. I wanna make comics with him at some point when i feel I could do that or whatever. yeagh. teehee TWIRLS YOU AROUND.

hmm... Lets go for a reading with Feanza!
in the dead of night, a rather large figure could be seen walking through the allies, based on the occasional stopping and going its very clear that the individual is not a local in the slightest...they wore a coat of muted colors with a nice tall collar, though with their horns poking out one could easily spot the clint of gold.
they await outside the door until addressed, and if let in from the cold.
???:I got recommended to you by Dazzet...?
???: he said it would be... "a glimpse even regardless of how miniscule to an enlightening journey." whatever the shishimied fuck that means...
they remove their coat, revealing more likely then not unsettlingly a plethora of fuschian tells, from the brightly colored fins to the symbol...
Feanza: shit, sorry, my names feanza, this is supposed to be like... a fortune telling session?
Feanza: I guess I also need to ask some kinda question...
Feanza: in the future, I know im supposed to attempt to run shit...I think my question is wither or not im going to be the one to fix shit. christ, is that to vauge...?
Tumblr media
Shafan invites the tall figure inside with only brief hesitation after they say Dazzet sent them. They'd had more than few colorful characters in here recently, so they were braced for the unusual. A particularly wild mutant, a clown possibly. Nervous as they are of clowns, they trusted Daz never to send them someone dangerous. Their faith in Dazzet flags somewhat as the seadweller reveals herself. Oh jegus. Oh sweet ancestors. That's not just a seadweller. That's an heriess. Shafan is visibly trembling, but at the question they clear their throat and scramble for their cards.
"Right. A reading, =of c=ourse. Yeah. I can d=o that. Have a seat."
They might murder Daz a little bit for this later, but they sure as hell aren't gonna say no.
Tumblr media
"Pleasure ta meet ya," they say, mustering a welcoming smile despite their obvious nerves, settling down in front of a low table covered by a cloth. "Nah, that ain't t=o=o vague. Can w=ork with that just fine. Just try n=ot ta f=ork me iffin ya d=ont like the answer, alright?"
Shafan shuffles the cards, humming to themselves, flourishing and riffling them like a practiced card sharp despite their shaking hands. After a moment, they reassemble the deck, holding it out to Feanza.
"Put yer hand =over it and think =of yer questi=on," they say, and wait for her to do so. "Then ch=oose three cards."
They let her do so, gesturing for her to lay them face down on the table.
"Awlright, let's see what we've got," they say, cracking their knuckles and beginning to calm down a bit as they get into their groove. They tap each card with a claw, then flip the first one, The Wheel.
"Bringing =out tha big guns right away, I see," Shafan says. "Supp=ose that makes sense given what yall g=ot g=oin =on. So, tha Major Arcana tells a story, and tha Wheel is tha halfway p=oint in that st=ory, tha turning point. It represents change, and cycles of change. That's what yer after, right? Well, it's what yer gonna get. Change is c=omin, n=o matter what y=ou d=o. N=o tellin what shape that change is g=onna take, but rest assured, it aint all up ta y=ou."
They turn over the next card and whistle under their breath. It's the Tower.
"N=ow, tha T=ower gets a bad rap," Shafan says quickly. "Pe=ople tend ta say it means disaster and st=op there, but that aint tha wh=ole st=ory. See, in tha story this tower came from (or one of em anyway), tha tower kept fallin over, on account of there was a pit below it, and two dragons inside, fightin to the death. Until them dragons was dealt with, tower could never be rebuilt. And that's the point of tha Tower, tearin shit down so you can build it up right again. Means havin tha courage ta break what needs to be broken. I don't think yer short a courage, but maybe yall need a reminder a why tha shit needs ta be torn down. Tha point a all that demo is tha rebuildin, feel me?"
They flip the last card, nodding thoughtfully.
"The Seven of Cups," they say. "represents choices. You've got a lot a choices ahead of ya, and some of em lead ta what you're after, and some of em lead ta disaster. What matters is, ya can't Monty Hall this shit. Ya gotta commit. There's a course a action ya know ya ought ta be takin, and if yall don't buckle down and follow that course to tha end, ya aint gonna get nowhere ya want ta be. That's what yer really down here talkin ta me about tonight, aint it? You're not sure about yer decision. Yer wobblin. Thinkin, maybe I won't make a difference, maybe it's not enough. Well I'm here ta tell ya, whatever ya do, it's gonna be a hell of a lot better than nothin."
They sweep the cards up and back into the deck with a decisive gesture.
"Hope that was what ya wanted ta hear," they say. "Want me ta keep goin? Or ya got what ya need?"

uhh lemme talk nonsense about some pt2 (up to & including ch12) things anyway now that ive slept on it<3
thinking nonstop about that scene where oz pats owens head.......arthur in 2nd anni........arthur who just earlier was so happy oz scolded him...... so seeing him run off like that...... cain who had someone who relied on him, and then suddenly not having that. when earlier he once again had the whole 'arthur is the one looking out for me when it should be the other way around'. knowing oz protection weights heavier than his own.... cain whos trying so hard to improve..... @_@ the fact both of them reacted so strongly to that scene hit ssoooooo hard....... i think cains especially is fascinating. it all feels very. gestures vaugely. ppl change how they rely on cain. in a way. + how him w/ nicholas also goes into the 'person cain looks up to turns out to be bad' storytelling.
adding on how riquet just earlier had the whole "yeah shylock looks nice, but he wont spoil u".......wanting someones affection but not getting it.....wanting to be important but that changing........i think especially since all 3 of them are young too.......
cant stop thinking about how arthur has had (have) that feeling hes gonna die too....T_T and oz who was sooo upset while telling akira about the prophecy...T_T arthur whos reckless....arthur who doesnt know how long he has left....central wizard oz...............ughhh i RLY hope it turns into a "able to change fate" plot cuz i rly do prefer those. the fact figaro didnt speak up about mitiles prophecy, but also now i have to live w the knowledge that the southern wizards might get the same feeling one day uuuuaaaggghhhhhhhhhhhh i havent read ch13 but speaking of figaro im a lot more fine w him dying of old age rather than.........whatever else LOL rly think his feelings towards snow n white n oz r fascinating too. def think about his & fausts convo a lot, wish hed tell lennox too. even if the way mithra phrased it still is....@_@ (but also the fact mithra could tell (!obviously!), and that akira talked about it w/ oz and akira who know is like :) oh so its cuz hes limiting his magic huh:) ((PLUS! oz controlling his power in the west.....syl who was like did oz or mithra enter the city huh....owen who used figaro as an example when explaining magic things to cain.....
i still rly like too that shino picked up so fast that figaros rly strong. even if that memory convo RLY. HAS ME. shino.......'that shino doesnt exist'...T_T shinoooooooooo...... shino whos keeping secrets....cain who cant tell the truth about owen either..........the fact both of them have a lord they serve..........those 2........i hope they get to talk about fun things this pt2
considering gil seems to like books i think he & akira should talk about that. i think itd be neat

All my energy was used on the fic, you don't get a title
Basically I took the scenes of lord of shadows and replaced the characters
( @littlx-songbxrd helped me develop the plot a lot so thank you Zia)
TW: descriptions of blood and injury, mentions of homophobia and ableism
Thomas had quickly come to the conclusion that he hated the land of Fae. Not because the location itself harboured ill experiences, but rather because of his travel companions.
He glanced at said travel companions. Alastair and Christopher were attempting to assemble a fire, struggling greatly because London wasn't exactly a place of forests. Alastair's face was stern with concentration, eyebrows drawn together as they always were, a permanent appearance of disapproval. His lips were turned down slightly, frustration causing him to scrunch up his face.
It wasn't adorable, Thomas scolded himself, it was intolerable. And entirely unenjoyable. He breathed a sigh, turning away from them and back at the rushing waters of a river. They'd been sent to be audience to the Seelie court and request their assistance to defeat Belial. It was a useless excursion, the Faerie wouldn't intervene unless their own land was being threatened. But the Clave had sent them regardless.
Christopher called his name, his voice a whispered yell as to not draw attention from whatever lurked in the forests. He picked his way back, settling on his sleeping mat and looking up. Without a fire, only moonlight made anything visible. Christopher had curled up already, but Alastair was awake. He was staring up at the stars his eyes wide with something like wonder.
The sight was disarming, but Thomas turned away, before Alastair caught his stare. Nothing good could result from that. The Sanctuary was a few weeks past, and what had started as longing glances and tortured pining turned into short tempers and quick annoyance. They hadn't talked, not the way Thomas desperately wanted to, but they had argued and bickered nearly every time they crossed paths. And he despised it.
Curling his hand into a fist, he turned onto his side and willed himself to sleep.
____
Alastair was fairly certain they were lost. It was as if Faerie shifted everytime they were on the correct path, and it accomplished nothing but adding to his frustration. And apparently, Thomas's.
"We should go north." He said, his eyes glinting with annoyance.
"Are you stupid? Do you want us to get killed? We'll end up there either way."
"Your method would take longer and time is something I don't fancy to waste."
"And your brilliant solution is to- what? Traverse through an entirely unmapped territory? It's far too dangerous, and I would like to keep my head adjoined to my body."
"Maybe sometimes it would do you some good to do something dangerous."
"Oh?" Alastair whirled towards him, their faces inches away from the other, each sparked with anger. "Do something dangerous? Like you? To my memory, it got you imprisoned!"
"Perhaps it would suit you to travel in solitude! Since you always seem to prefer that anyway!"
"I do not-"
"I really do not think we should be causing this much of a disturbance," Christopher chimed in, his face twisted in confusion, head swiveling between both of them. "They're simply... directions?"
"Without directions." Alastair said, "you end up lost." His eyes stayed locked with Thomas's, head tilted to meet his infuriating height.
"We won't get lost," he hissed back.
"For someone with a tattoo of a compass you truly have a horrendous sense of direction-"
"We could just," Christopher started, flipping the map over, before looking up with wide eyes. "Go through here." He gestured at the map.
"Absolutely wonderful. Let's leave, I wish to depart as soon as we're able."
A few moments passed before a loud screech like noise emerged from the forests. Because why, Alastair thought drawing out his weapons, would anything ever be simple for him. Christopher and Thomas pressed closer when the creature burst forth from the trees. And really creature was the only world he had for it. It appeared as a demon but not one Alastair had ever studied, and from the looks on the others faces they hadn't either.
"Do we-"
The creature lunged faster than any demon could, a flash of the murky green that colored it's scales. It's claws flashed, charging at Thomas. Alastair briefly registered slipping in between the two, lodging the wooden shaft of his spear between it's jaw. He sought out Christopher sliding under the thing to stab it with his blade, killing it quickly but not quickly enough to prevent when the creatures claws raked against the top of his chest.
Air rushed out of his lungs and he felt familiar arms wrap around him, catching him before he could fall. His eyes fluttered shut on their own record. He fought to regain conciusness, he refused to be unconscious around the likes of his companions, but he felt himself dragged into blackness regardless.
---
Christopher was accustomed to his friends odd relations. He had certainly gained enough practice observing the spats they often had. But whatever anger his cousin held towards Alastair was always a puzzle to him. He was sure it was a puzzle to them too considering their never ending shifts in emotion.
He looked over at Thomas who's face was twisted in something between intense worry and sorrow. His eyes dropped to Alastair who had still not woken up, bandages covered the scratches that stretched from his shoulder to the top of his neck. He winced remembering the injury, bleeding profusely with no runes to stem it. His own worry for Alastair had occupied much of his mind. James and Matthew would be furious at such a thing but Christopher found he didn't care.
"I'll go stand watch," Christopher offered, making his way to the outside of the cave they'd taken shelter in.
Thomas hated being in debt, he remembered. When they were younger he would never accept help unless it was forced upon him, his stubborn nature preventing it. And now after Alastair had risked his life twice to help him, he must feel like he owed something.
Christopher pulled himself onto one of the rocks resting outside of the cave and tipped his head back. He missed his home. Not whatever had overtaken it in the months past, he missed Henry, he missed his parents who he'd barely conversed with since before the killings had happened. He missed Alexander even if the child cried a storm. He glanced up at the sky, noticing the first rays of dawn breaking through the clouds. He pulled himself off of his rock with a sigh. He wished for normalcy more than anything. But he doubted it would grace them anytime soon.
He ducked under the entrance of the cave, opening his mouth to call out for Thomas to get ready to depart. But Thomas wasn't awake.
He was curled onto his side, facing Alastair, both evidently asleep. Their hands stretched out the distance between them and were laced together.
Christopher sucked in a breath. "Oh, Thomas," he breathed.
He'd known of his cousin's vauge feelings for Alastair from the time that Thomas was quite a bit shorter than him. But he hadn't fully understood what the two felt towards each other. He knelt between them, gently attempting to pry their hands apart, but both their grips tightened. As if through the small action they were able to pour every unsaid emotion they'd held.
Christopher wasn't a stranger to the way the Clave treated anyone they viewed as different. The way they shut down every attempt Henry had made to better the Shadowhunter world, the way they would continue to deny any of his own attempts. They claimed to want happiness and order for all but the moment someone proved to differ from their standards they would shut them down and rid of the evidence. They would remain under the pretense of fairness while they claimed credit for any accomplishments him or his uncle managed to force into them.
Thomas never had chosen himself, never his own happiness. Christopher let go of their intertwined hands, then looking at Thomas's face. It was almost drawn up in concentration. He stood, glancing at them once more before returning to the front of the cave and yelling for Thomas to wake up so they could depart to the castle. It wasn't as much as he wanted to do, but it was all he could.
___
Thomas dumped their small pile of belongings near the foot of the bed. The Seelie Queen had apparently chosen graciousness that night and permitted them two rooms. Christopher claimed the first one, leaving Thomas and Alastair to occupy the other. Not that Alastair had woken yet.
Thomas crossed the room, refusing to look where Alastair was laying on the bed, where he would soon need to lay next to him. He made his way to Christopher's room, too tired to truly marvel at the tall marble pillars and regal decor adorning the halls and bedrooms. Christopher was cross-legged on the bed, scrawling something into a notebook under the dim lights that shone through the waterfall close to the wall.
He pulled himself onto the bed next to him, worrying at the material of his nightshirt. Christopher looked up after a moment, fixing his peculiar eyes on Thomas.
"Are you all right Tom?"
The question shouldn't have startled him as much as it did. "I'm okay."
Christopher lips tightened. "You're lying. You usually do when people ask you."
Thomas breathed a soft sigh, pulling his legs up onto the bed. "I know."
Christopher studied him for a few moments, debating something in his mind before saying "You don't have to sacrifice yourself to make us happy Thomas. Anyone who truly cares for you will not love you any less for your decisions."
Thomas startled, looking at him with widened eyes. Something in his heart sped up, as if a weight had lifted from it causing it to beat faster in it's absence. "I don't- I don't understand-"
A hand gripped his forearm. "Go back to your room Thomas. I suspect he'll wake soon."
___
When Alastair woke he wasn't in a forest. He had known the Faerie were images of royalty but the room seemed ridiculously extravagant. He wanted to pull himself up in the bed but a sharp sting on his neck forced him back down.
The door swung open then, Thomas entered with a odd look on his face. It switched to overwhelming relief when he saw Alastair.
Swallowing, Alastair rose a hand his neck. The Faeries must have worked on the wound, it had healed over somewhat but not enough to relieve him of the pain.
He heard Thomas clear his throat. When Alastair looked up again, he'd moved to the other side of his bed. "You had gotten injured in the forest. We're in the Seelie Courts now, you've been indisposed for a few hours."
"Oh." He wasn't sure what else to add.
Thomas stared at him for a few unnerving moments before making a frustrated noise. He slid onto the bed, folding his legs underneath him and giving Alastair an imploring sort of look. "I'm sorry. For everything I've done. And I'm sorry I couldn't give you the right words in the sanctuary. I'll try to give them now."
Alastair inhaled sharply, from surprise rather than pain. "I don't understand. You shouldn't be apologizing-"
Thomas half smiled before cutting him off. "Let someone apologize to you for once. You deserve as much after the way we've treated you."
Biting his lip and looking away, Alastair noticed the pile of clothes and other luggage in the corner of the room. Oh. He turned back.
"Well Mr. Lightwood I find your apology to be satisfactory, despite it still being unnecessary."
Thomas smiled fully then and something in Alastair's chest loosened.
"Does this mean I am permitted to use the bed alongside you?" His voice was teasing.
"As long as you manage to stay on your side of it."
But that rule was quickly broken, Thonas shifted close and carefully curled his body around Alastair, his head resting on in his curls and limb wrapped loosely around him. Alastair breathed a small breath of relief before pressing his face into Thomas's neck and sleeping peacefully for the first time in years.
Happy birthday Zia!! Ilysm and you deserve literally every good thing in the world, you're amazing and very talented and yeah <33

Thicker Than Water (Part 4)
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 (here) Part 5, Part 6, Part 7,  Part 8
Ao3 link HERE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He awoke sore and badly rested, tears dried on his face.
Jaskier made it through the next day. He ate a little of the food Ciri offered him, only because when he tried to decline the first time her eyes got large and her bottom lip showed just the barest hint of a tremble. He couldn’t bear it. The dry horse bread that was usual for traveling rations crumbled in his mouth. He was so hungry, it was one of the best things he’d ever tasted.
Jaskier couldn’t bring himself to even unsling his lute from his shoulder during their trek. His fingers itched to play, of course. He continued his story for Ciri and in his mind he played music for the background, he just couldn’t do it. He wouldn’t sell his lute in this next town, but before they reached Kaer Morhen he would have to. It would give them money, and he wouldn’t be a burden. He swallowed down the lump in his throat and continued telling Ciri the story.
He noticed a bit before mid day that Geralt was watching him. That wasn’t out of sorts, of course. Yennefer and Ciri were watching him too, he was an excellent storyteller and the tale was enthralling. Geralt didn’t seem to be paying attention to the story though. He was staring-- glowering--brow low and furrowed, at Jaskier.
Jaskier felt hurt lance through him and he almost staggered, avoiding Geralt’s gaze. He knew Geralt didn’t want him along, didn’t want him at all, but he couldn’t even pretend? He couldn’t go back to their relationship before? Not the warm, almost companionable silences that had been nurtured between them, but the grunts and stone faced silence of the beginning of their acquaintance.
Jaskier breathed through the pain in his chest. Twenty years of silences, all kinds of them, stony and friendly and sleepy and painful and quietly nice. But they were back to the beginning, or worse, Geralt angry and Jaskier’s voice filling in places it didn’t belong.
“Jaskier?”
That was Ciri, and Jaskier realized that he’d actually trailed off mid-sentence.
“Sorry little highness,” he smiled and gave a funny little bow. “I’m but a simple entertainer, a poet and a fool, sometimes my mind runs away from me.”
“Fool is right,” Yennefer snorted. It wasn’t totally unkind, but it still stung. It stung even more when Geralt, so taciturn all day, snorted with laughter at her comment. Jaskier felt his ears burn and his chest ache.
“Now, where was I?”
“The king’s son met the North Wind,” Ciri said, matching Jaskier’s steps. “And he has to beat him in a game of wit to gain knowledge of where the sorcerer’s daughter was taken, that’s what you said, but you didn’t tell us what game yet.”
At least someone treasured his words, Jaskier thought. Although they weren’t worth much, he threw one out after the other.
Like garbage, whispered the back of his mind.
“Ah yes,” he said instead. “the North Wind sat before the king’s son, and laid out a chess set made of ice and wind.”
“How can chess pieces be made of wind?”
Jaskier smiled, Ciri asked questions at all the right places. “The North Wind wanders, he goes everywhere, blowing cold breath across The Continent. When the North Wind is present and we breath our breath can be seen.” Jaskier smiled here and added an aside, “My little sister used to call it dragon smoke. But by the same magic that gives the North Wind a body to walk the world, he can take our frozen breath and turn it cold and solid as glass.”
Jaskier let himself tell the story on autopilot. His feet ached. He’d been darning the socks he was wearing for a year or more, but he wasn’t good at it and the lumps were rubbing his toes raw. Worse than that, the soles of his boots were almost worn through. Just one more thing he’d have to buy.
He felt ashamed of himself. His boots had been going thin for a while, and instead of saving his coin and getting them repaired or just buying new ones, he’d drowned himself in drink, feeling sorry. Oh, he hadn’t known he would be making a trip up a mountain, but he needed boots regardless. No wonder Geralt had always been upset with him, he always put pleasure over sense, couldn’t even spend coin sensibly.
Couldn’t darn socks, couldn’t budget his coin, couldn’t shut up. A fool.
He stumbled on a tree root and nearly swore. Couldn’t even walk right. One of the blisters building on his foot had burst, he was sure. It was easy to tell, the pain had gone from a rubbing ache to stinging and warm. Only years of practice and performance kept him from interrupting the story.
Something must have shown on his face though, or his scent changed or whatever because Geralt was staring at him intently. That face, always so unreadable.
Jaskier wasn’t going to give him anything else to scowl about. He kept walking, keeping the story rolling and his voice light. His bones ached. He had to stop for just a moment when a button, long past hanging loosely on his doublet, finally pulled free. He picked it up and the head rush nearly took him to the ground. He’d eaten little, slept poorly, and the only food he’d had in a long time before this was ale. He blinked the grey from his vision, trying not to let the panic show when it didn’t go away as quickly as he’d have liked.
It was okay. It was all going to be okay. They’d make it to the village by nightfall. They wouldn’t sleep there of course but he could get proper food. Maybe even slip away and catch a quick nap in a stable or hayloft or something. His whole body was buzzing with a sort of exhausted energy and his heart was pounding.
Jaskier reflected that he hadn’t been well before meeting up with Geralt and his little family. He’d been sick with drink and heartache and had not enough food then too.
Smile through the pain.
This wasn’t even bad as performances could go. Once he’d actually broken a finger just before a set at Oxenfurt. Simple clumsiness, he’d closed his index finger in a door, but he’d played his whole set, with a perfect score from his professor.
It grew darker, the sun just setting when they reached a field at the edge of the town. It was a large open field and, in warmer months, it was likely home to fairs and large market days. Probably in these rural areas people traveled for a week to bring their goods and livestock to this town. It didn’t matter now, mid autumn settling into late autumn. To Jaskier the town was nameless.
They set up camp in the field. It left them exposed to being seen, but they hid themselves behind a small rise on the edge of the field, blocking them mostly from sight. Still, Geralt seemed on edge. Jaskier wasn’t sure it was about the camp. Geralt kept looking over at him with his eyebrows pressed together. Whenever he did that it formed this little crease right between his brows that Jaskier wanted to kiss away.
Jaskier bit his lip, hard, to focus on anything other than that.
The three of them sat, too tired to talk much more. Jaskier had finished most of the story and decided to leave the rest for the next day they were traveling a lot, to give Ciri something else to think about. She was definitely Calanthe’s blood. They traveled all day and she never complained, but also told them when she needed to stop, advocating for herself in no uncertain terms. It was the princess herself who interrupted his thoughts.
“You said you had a sister, do you have lots of siblings?”
“Not really,” Jaskier said, settling down on the ground and feeling his bones pop. His blisters were definitely bleeding inside his boots too. “Two older brothers, Henrik and Teodor, and I had a younger sister, Lotte.”
“Had?”
“She was sickly, always too small for her age,” Jaskier said quietly. “I learned the lute for her, at first. She liked music and was often bedridden. A fever took her when she was about your age.” Jaskier looked down at his battered boots.
“I’m sorry,” Ciri whispered.
“It’s allright little highness, it’s been almost thirty years now. Time flies.”
“I didn’t know you had siblings,” Geralt said. It was growly, but Geralt always used that tone.
“You never really asked.”
Dinner was a quiet affair. Jaskier ate the last of the rations in his pack, waving away Ciri’s offerings and showing her his food as proof that he had some. It didn’t really settle the hunger that had been eating him from the inside out all day, but at this point he figured he could eat a mountain and still have room for dessert.
“Tomorrow,” Geralt said gruffly once dinner was cleared away. “We don’t all enter the town as a group. Yen and Ciri go together. I go alone. Jaskier goes alone.”
Jaskier nodded, so did Ciri and Yennefer.
“If we see eachother, act as though we don’t know eachother,” Geralt said, then he turned his gaze on Jaskier. “Don’t attract too much attention.”
Jaskier bristled at getting his own private reprimand. “I’m a bard, Geralt,” he said. “How am I supposed to earn coin if I don’t play.”
Geralt grunted. “I didn’t say don’t play just no... don’t do the whole...” he gestured a vauge hand.
“The whole...me?” Jaskier said sarcastically. He was pulling at the lion’s tail he knew, but he was in pain and tired and hungry and Geralt had no right to be so cruel.
“The whole bright colors, loud and annoying thing. Country bard, not court bard, got it?”
Loud and annoying.
“Got it,” Jaskier said, looking back down at his boots. He didn’t say that none of his clothes could have passed for courtly anymore anyway.
They set about getting ready for bed. Ciri gave him a quick hug before she and Yennefer disappeared into their magical tent. Jaskier sat and pulled off his boots, not letting a single flicker of pain show on his face. He knew Geralt would be able to smell blood, but Geralt had gone to get water from the nearby river. He had to peel his socks off and yes, there was blood there, by now stuck into the threadbare fabric. He let himself wince then. He rinsed off the wounds but he was without bandages, so he just dried off the area and put his other pair of socks on. He only had the two pairs anyway, but at least the blisters would stay dry.
He rolled himself into his bedroll and thought of tomorrow. At least there were no tree roots here.
The next day dawned slowly, instead of bright pinks and oranges it was a kind of runny yellow that just leeched into the sky before fading into early morning blue. Jaskier watched in admiration as Yennefer changed Geralt’s hair to short and dark, and then gave herself brown eyes and a slightly different bone structure. To look at both of them was odd, because Jaskier could see the similarities. Yennefer’s nose was changed and her cheekbones were a little different, but it was still her, and Geralt just looked like a different, although quite handsome, version of himself. Ciri was simply given mousy brown hair and some extra freckles.
Just like that, the perfect and all powerful family looked like two normal people and one witcher who was still clearly a witcher but not the white wolf. Jaskier shouldered his lute. He’d cleaned up the scruff he’d been growing into a more respectable look and with his longer hair and tatty cloak he looked like any poor traveling musician. If he’d traded the lute for a shortbow he could have looked like a woodsman, totally nondescript.
He was entering from a different direction, so as not to arouse suspicion, and so was Geralt. Jaskier began walking around, so that he could enter from the east. Yen and Ciri would walk into town the closest direction, and Geralt was entering from the west. This early, it was unlikely they would have been seen all together.
Jaskier made his way to the eastern edge of the town and walked in, scanning the streets. If this were a farm people would be up and awake long before now, farmers wake well before dawn, but this was a town, and so few people wandered the streets. Shop keepers were just beginning to open up. Jaskier bought a couple pears, slightly overripe but cheaper because of it, off of a fruit seller and had breakfast. He tried to lock into his mind all the shops around so he could find his supplies easiest later.
His mind was resisting him though. In spite of the softer ground, Jaskier had still slept badly last night. His body ached and he wished he could find somewhere warm to lay for an hour or two. Instead he found the well.
As wells should be, this one was right in the center of town. He set down his lute case beside it, tuned his lovely lady, and began to play.
In his very first few months after leaving Oxenfurt he had learned this trick, and used it often. If you get into a town early, play at the well. People get their water first thing in the morning and there you are.
A few young women with yokes and buckets smiled at him and he nodded in return. The day brightened a little further as the sun crept above the buildings and more people came to gather in the town square. They weren’t there to hear Jaskier, not at first, most of them came for water, or to chat with neighbors, or discuss business. Many of them gathered around him though.
Coins clattered into the case. Mostly coppers, but in a little town like this that was quite normal.
“As sweet Polly Oliver lay musing in bed, A sudden strange fancy came into her head. "Nor father nor mother shall make me false prove, I'll 'list as a soldier, and follow my love,” he sang.
“So early next morning she softly arose, And dressed herself up in her dead brother's clothes. She cut her hair close, and she stained her face brown, And went for a soldier to fair Rinde Town.”
Sweet Polly Oliver was one of his favorites, a simple country song about a girl and her lover in wartime. This town was far enough north that with luck Nilfgaard wouldn’t attack, but the anxiety threatened.
Jaskier gave a good performance, perhaps not his best, but he was tired and cold and the flagstones beneath his feet were very hard. He danced about, playing sweet folk songs and jigs and reels, delighting in the people who swept up and danced along. Still, though, he felt his feet bleeding inside his boots. He played from just after dawn until perhaps an hour after noon before bowing away and taking his coin.
He’d done better than he’d expected, but there wasn’t nearly enough coin for all the things he’d need for Kaer Morhen, and extra food to help Geralt and Ciri. He’d buy what he needed now, and they’d stop again in Ard Carraigh before the keep. He’d sell his lute there, it was a large city, and he’d get a good price. The thought still made him ache, though.
It wasn’t just his emotions causing him pain, he realised. The aches he’d been experiencing were in his chest lately, and both physical and emotional. He just needed more rest.
Jaskier slipped through back alleys and bent streets. He’d seen a stable on his way into town. He stepped in quietly, startling a stable hand, no more than a boy, who’d been quietly talking to a horse.
“You’re the bard,” he said. “Saw you in the square jus’ this morning.”
“That’s right,” Jaskier said, bowing a little. “I’m afraid I’ll be moving on this evening and--”
“And you want to have a kip in the stables,” said the boy. “Yeah lots o’ musicians and peddlers do that. Rule is though, I got to get a coin off ‘em first as payment. I’m sorry, but I get a beating if’n I don’t.”
“No worries,” Jaskier said, he’d expected as much. He handed the boy two copper coins. “There’s pay, won’t have you getting beaten for my sake, the second coin is to wake me in two hours.”
The boy gave him a lopsided grin. “You got it sir, thanks.”
Jaskier snuggled up in the hay loft. He’d often done it, it was pretty common, if you couldn’t buy a stay at an inn or especially if you just needed a ‘kip’ as the boy had said, during the day. He’d slept in haystacks once in a while on the road too. They were sort of comfortable and surprisingly warm and, best of all, robbers didn’t get you if you kept yourself mostly under the hay.
The scent of hay and oats and horses lulled him to sleep.
He dreamed about haystacks. For some reason Roach was in the haystack with him. Geralt and Ciri too, even Yennefer. It was a crowded haystack indeed, and it grew smaller and smaller until Jaskier had to leave it and sleep on the ground so that the others weren’t squished.
He awoke to the stable boy nudging him.
“Pardon me mister,” he said. “But it’s been two hours.”
Jaskier thanked him and brushed off his clothes.
The shops were doing a good trade this afternoon and he’d be sure to be a face in the crowd. He bought a small cooking pot and plenty of ground oats and barley for porridge at one shop. They were light to carry and owner packaged them nicely, first in one cheap, cloth drawstring bag, and then in another such bag, but with the drawstring on a different side, so he was unlikely to lose food.
In another stall he bought plenty of nuts, walnuts were cheap here and would keep well. Good for traveling and they had protein. Some dried jerky, dried peas, and dried lentils finished his food shopping, and also most of his coin.
It was three days to Ard Carraigh, another week to trek up to the keep. The food would sustain him for that long, and they’d probably just pool their food to make sure everyone was fed. Still, he wasn’t being a burden, not too much.
He couldn’t afford new boots, gloves, or a cloak right now, but with the last of his coin he bought a new pair of thick, warm socks, a small roll of bandages, and a couple pieces of candied ginger in a little paper twist. He tucked them all away and left the town, disappearing back to the field and their little camp well before the sun set.
Jaskier’s heart sunk to see that he was the last to arrive. Everything was packed up, they couldn’t risk staying in the same place two nights in a row. Geralt grunted at him, but didn’t unleash any thoughts on Jaskier being a burden, so he counted himself lucky.
He hung his head a little at having delayed their parting and trekked after the perfect little family, his pack much heavier than it had been. Ciri slid her hand into his and they walked on in silence. The hand was nice though.
In an odd way, it hurt, too. He wasn’t part of the family, so he didn’t really deserve this, but it was painfully good to have just a taste of being wanted.
What would happen, he wondered, when the winter was over. He was a danger to Geralt and Ciri if Nilfgaard found him. He wasn’t wanted by Geralt at all. Jaskier was reminded once again that it would be so much easier for Geralt to kill him, or for Yennefer to wipe his memory. Maybe he could fake his death to get Nilfgaard of his trail.
“Jaskier?” Ciri asked. “How did you become a bard?”
Jaskier looked down at her, maudlin thoughts interuppted. “Oh, well, it’s not as though you have to register, you just become one. Walking into an inn and saying ‘let me play for you pretty please I need food’ is a good start.”
“No,” Ciri giggled. “I meant, you said you learned the lute for your sister, but you write your own music and stuff too.”
“Oh, well, anyone can write music if they have an instrument and a good enough memory,” Jaskier said. “Indeed, many of the greatest bards had little education at all, I, however, studied at Oxenfurt.”
“Did you like it?”
“Sometimes. It was school, and some parts were dull but I learned much.”
“I heard some of the maids giggling once about a young scholar who’d come to stay with us,” Ciri said, matter of factly. “He was always in the library and was kind of snooty with me when I asked questions, but the maids were saying he certainly had a lot of ‘carnal knowledge’. Did you study that too?”
Jaskier was choking on thin air.
“I, um, no it was more of a hobby,” Jaskier said before his head could catch up with his mouth. “Little Highness, I suspect you weren’t supposed to hear that conversation, and no, I studied the seven liberal arts.”
“So it was about sex, I was never sure,” Ciri said.
Jaskier coughed awkwardly. “Yes, princess.”
“It’s okay, I know about that stuff, Grandmother explained it.”
Jaskier let out a breath, at least he wouldn’t have to be the one to explain anything to her.
“When you went to school were you scared to leave your family?” Ciri asked.
“No, pet, I was excited to go,” he wasn’t about to get into all his trauma with her, she had enough of her own, poor thing. “I couldn’t wait to learn about music and poetry.”
“Grandmother said all poets were silly romantics and dreamers, but I think that sounds nice. Do you have a moose?”
“A what?”
“I read it in a book, a moose, somebody you love and you write about it.”
“Oh, that’s one of the trickier words Ciri, it’s said ‘muse’, and yes, I had one or two.”
“Only one or two? In the book the poet had hundreds,” Ciri sounded almost disappointed.
“I only ever needed one,” Jaskier said quietly. “One that mattered anyway.”
“And your Countess still left you,” Geralt said, rather coldly. He was doing his annoyed face and Jaskier could have kicked himself. He’d been talking too much. The reminder that the Countess de Stael had left him too hurt, but Jaskier wasn’t going to risk Geralt’s ire to say that she wasn’t the muse he was talking about. That was maybe something he should keep to himself.
“Do muses often leave?” Ciri asked, wide eyed. “If somebody was writing me poetry I wouldn’t want to.”
“No, usually the poet does the leaving,” Jaskier said. “After his muse asks him to go. There’s a shelf life on a bard, you know. We only have so many stories and songs before we’re used up and no one wants us around anymore. That’s when we move along.”
“I’ll hear your stories again and again,” Ciri said. “I won’t ask you to go.”
Jaskier’s heart curled up and whimpered inside his chest. He’d have to go sooner or later, he’d have to leave her. Geralt would get sick of him, too sick to bear even for Ciri’s sake. Or Jaskier would just have to leave of his own volition, lest he shovel shit into her life too.
If he could give her life one blessing...
“This’ll do for a campsite,” Geralt said. It was a tiny, clear area. Jaskier almost groaned. It was surrounded by oak trees, with dropped acorns that would dig into his bedroll and mottle his back with bruises come morning. He’d had a good rest in town, though, so another bad night of sleep wouldn’t be too bad, he told himself.
The others had eaten in town. Jaskier said he had too, so he wouldn’t waste rations. He had plenty, but strangely, he wasn’t so hungry lately. Anyway, always best to save.
He pulled off his boots and  his freshly bloodied socks. Ew. Ciri retired to the magic tent early, exhausted from their long days of walking. Jaskier listened to Yennefer and Geralt talk.
“We’ll need lots of supplies in Ard Carraigh,” Geralt was saying.
“We don’t have any money,” Yennefer replied.
Jaskier had his back to them as he cleaned the wounds on his feet, but he could picture grave expressions.
“We’ll get some, I’ll do a quick contract there, something. We’ll need a cart and pony to get Ciri up The Killer, it’s too much for her, it’s too hard for some witchers even.”
“That’ll cost,” Yennefer said. “But you’re right. I wish I could portal us but--”
“Tracking, exactly. There’s always plenty of contracts in cities, it’ll be fine.”
Jaskier looked at the blisters on his foot, they’d opened more with his long performance that day. It was no matter, he wound the bandages around them and put on his new, thick socks. At least his feet would be warm.
Not too warm, though. He spotted a hole in the bottom of his boot that he hadn’t noticed before.
And they needed lots of money for Ard Carraigh. No matter. He knew how to get some.
He pretended his eyes filled with tears from the pain of blisters, not from heartache, as he pushed his feet back into his boots and opened the lute case. He pulled out his beautiful girl. He wouldn’t play her, it would annoy Geralt. He’d always hated Jaskier’s music, although he hated to hear Jaskier sing even more.
Pie with no filling.
Jaskier wished he could play her, though. It was going to break his heart to part with her, and he didn’t think he’d ever played another instrument as fine. If he could, he’d play her every second until he had to sell her.
Probably for the best, though, if he was going to fake his death. She was distinctive.
He brushed a hand over the beautiful wood work on her front. There was a little bit of linseed oil left, and he poured it on the rag he kept in the case and began to work over his girl lovingly. His eyes teared up again, but he fought it back. He would have smashed his lute if it meant helping Ciri. And Geralt.
Jaskier longed for Geralt to forgive him, to take him back and let him stay by his side, but he’d meant what he’d said, bards have a shelf life, and Jaskier’s time was up.
He wished Geralt would at least speak with him, though. His heart was aching. In a completely different sense, so was his chest.
“Play us a tune, bard,” Yennefer said.
Jaskier turned around. Yen and Geralt were sitting beside eachother, close together. She looked so beautiful in her fine cloak that Jaskier wondered how he ever thought he could catch Geralt’s eye when beings like her existed.
“You know,” he said. “It’s late and I wouldn’t want to bother Ciri.”
“Tent’s soundproof,” Yennefer said, waving her hand.
“I mean, really,” Jaskier protested weakly. Disobeying Yennefer’s request/command was like bathing your brain in lava, but Geralt was looking angry again. Some would say there wasn’t much change from Geralt’s normal expression, but Jaskier knew his face better than he knew his own. Something had made Geralt angry or upset. The only possible answer was Jaskier. It was always Jaskier.
“Play us a song, bard,” Yennefer said. “You’ve been so quiet other than stories, I’d almost think you were a doppler, Melitele knows no one could have taught you to shut up.”
Jaskier swallowed the lump in his throat.
He began, slowly, to pick out a gently tune on his lute. It was a song about winter and home, and he knew the lyrics well. Yennefer had only asked him to play, so he would. His music was at least less offensive than his voice.
He reveled in the feel of his lute beneath his fingers, letting the feeling wash over him, committing it to memory.
When he was finished Yennefer said, “I suppose your voice was tired from your performance, I heard in the town how the bard had played such a long set.”
Jaskier smiled grimly back at her. “Just earning my keep.”
He went to bed, feeling the cold seep into his bones.

Ducktales Reviews: The Phantom and the Sorceress
Tumblr media
Ducktales returns! The Phantom Blot returns to animation after too damn long with a neat backstory, an infnity guantlet and a hate boner for anything magic related. And since Lena is magic related she’s forced to go to her worst enemy and local close up magician Magica De Spell for help. Also Gladstone is here because we missed him and for no other reason. But we missed him so it’s okay. Friendship Is Magic, under the cut.
Woo-ooo! We’re back! Months later and in a new room, with new things to be depressed about because this year is groundhog day and everyone is bill murray, which isn’t as fun as it should be, Ducktales is finally back on screens and in my heart. And my galbladder.. he really likes ducktales.  But yeah with the recent cancelation of the venture bros, it’s nice to get it’s spirtual littlte brother back just a few weeks later to help fill the void, and while a comparison to it now I know frank’s a fan and noticed the simlarties between rusty and gyro thanks to a tumblr post, the same post for both things inf act, I might just do that one day. But tha’ts not what your here, for , iv’e had to rewrite this intro enough times, Pitter Patter, let’s get at er.
This episodes opens with Scrooge sitting down for his morning tea when the kids pop out of the tv and hte bored way he figures it out is really hilarious. David Tennat is really good at selling just how Scrooge has both seen it all and has the deductive skills of Barbra Gordon. What eveyrone syaing “Of batman” gets old after a while and she’s just as smart as he is, especially as oracle. Point is it’s a good bit. As he correclty guesses the kids were playing Legends of Nerverquest or whatever that game Huey and Della played last season is called, one of them wished it was real, presumibly Dewey, and Lena’s magic accidently made it happen.  And since it’s her first spotlight episode of the season, and possibly only one since this season is kind of packed, it’s time to talk about Lena! Admitely I PLANNED to do at least her first episode and her two season 2 episodes before this, but life got in the way so here we are. Lena.. is easily one of my faviortes, the number of weblena chats have made that clear. She’sd got a compelling arc, the show tackles abuse well in her narrative, and she and webby have really sweet chemstiry. Plus she brought us Violet and i’ll always be greatful for that and she’s voiced by Kimiko Glenn in her first major voice acting role so that helps too. SHe’s a great addition to the cast and the canon. Same, as the previous comment made obvious, goes for Violet, and the three togther have a great dynamic and i’ts nice to finally see an episode with JUST the three of them post “Friendship Hates Magic.”.
But yeah Lena’s magic’s been going haywire and I do feel the setups abit rushed.. hilarious but rushed. While Night on Kilmotor hill did establish her magic can run wild, it was also vauge if it was because of her, or it was because magica was messing with her head. IT’s still a plausable setup since we haven’t really SEEN her use her magic or have any intrest and doing so and she’s only done so either while working for magica, to undo something magica did, or to give her sister a mace so she could literally go midevil on some alien ass, it just feels a bit abrubt. And while Night on Kilmotor hill also set up a problem we hadn’t seen on screen, it felt like it gave us more time to ease into it and Lena’s issues, and made it clear SOMETHING was up instead of just telling us that. The rest of hte episode is still good i’ve just seen the show be way better at setup than this.
But yeah Lena’s magic keeps runing their fun and she feels bad about it, while Scrooge ends up putting his foot and spats in his mouth by voicing his hatred of magic, with all his nephews giving him a “Grandpa no look” and Webby glaring at him.. and whiel I didn’t realize it while watching it.. whiel sh’es given him a disaporving look, the equilvent of shooting bambi in the face emtoinally, she’s only been THIS angry with him one other time.. and it was the time he said “Your not family”. Thankfully this time he’s not in defnstive arrogant bastard mode, so he meekly walks it back to exclude her and she shrugs it off: She hates magic too. And really.. it’s not hard to see WHY given that most times it’s enterted her life, it’s nearly got everyone she loves killed, and that the only spellcaster she knows personally is the absuive aunt whose gaslighted her on multiple occasions, most recently to try and renslave her.  Thankfully before Webby can make an old man bleed for his insesntivity, Della reveals some magical creature is there and Scrooge, while annoyed it’s more magic, is happy for another adventure and invites everyone along. And I jsut love that he dosen’t even show the slightest hesitation bringing Violet and Lena along. As far as he’s concerned probably their family too, maybe not as much as Webby but their still welcome. I mean granted i’m sure della and donald had an awkard conversation with Ty and Indy over all this to make sure it was cool, but still, it’s a nice gesture on his part and show’s his personality: He really dosen’t care who comes along as long as they can pull their weight and share his love for adventure, their welcome.  It’s also nice ot see him and Lena interact since the two really haven’t since the shadow war: Sure he’s been in the same room with her twice, btu they haven’t really spoken. Though my honest guess is they could’ve genuinely meant for Scrooge to adopt her into the family.. but when coming up with Violet found her family adopting her and them becoming sisters to be a better idea and went with that. And to be fair it is, and not just for  shipping purposes, I just wish we got some closure on that line, but i’m also aware the show has a LOT of ground to cover each season, so I understand it probably got squeezed out by all the other stuff going on and don’t really sweat it since we got something better anyway, her getting two gay dads and a sister, it just felt worth talking about.  And in universe.. I feel he didn’t simply because he didn’t either know she was back or have a chance to, though i’m also damn certain, at least in my own headcanon, he helped those men formally adopt her. I mean he owns most of the city, and they probably also had to make Lena legally exist in the first place since I doubt Magica bothered to put her on any offical records that weren’t signed in blood and written on paper made of avian flesh, which given SCrooge’s experince is probably not the first time he had to get a person into official records who came into being by way of magic or some other weirdness.
Anyways, Lena opts out of the adventure because she’s worried about it going haywire and Webby opts out out of sympathy and while Violet is clearly keen to go, she gladly does so for her sister.. though this just makes Lena feel worse since now her girlfriend and her sister are missing out on stuff because of her, and suggests just going to sleep before she whoopsie daisy magics them to death.  The girls end up woken from their sleep however by a bang at the door. It’s Gladstone!
Tumblr media
Yup it’s time to talk about another character I haven’t talked about yet. Gladstone is easily one of the show’s best overhauls. See in the comics while Gladstone is just as lucky and lazy.. he’s also just..
Tumblr media
Okay i’m amazed it’s taken this long for me to refrence jean ralphio in one of these reviews but i’m glad it was for this.  Back on topic, while I know Gladstone in the comics has his fans, and is softend a bit in european comics, but in most stories i’ve read with him he’s an insufferably arrogant dick. Even BEFORE getting his luck, his first apperance, which I own in trade and read earlier this year, has him trying to take Donald’s house and kick him and the nephews out on the street over a drunken wager to take a polar dive, which Donald fials because life hates him and he’s a coward. Thankfully Daisy rushed in and saved the day because she’s great sometimes ,and turned things on him wiht his own drunken crap, but still, it says something when your first apperance is trying to force three ten year olds and your own cousin out into the cold.
He .. did not get any better once his super luck came into play. Instead he just flautned it all the time and tried to constnatly win Daisy over from donald.. which had varying sucess based on how much of a shallow dick she was being that story, and in general was just unplesant. He really only works for me in comic in those aformetioned softer times: when a writer makes his luck ruin his love life or add actual depth instead of him just being the raincloud on donal’ds parade. The original ducktales and the going quackers game are the only places I can think of he showed up otherwise, prototype in the old disney shorts nonwithstanding, and Ducktales Classic made him a nice guy from what i’ve heard. Thankfully frank and crew knew exactly what to do to adapt him perfectly: He still retains some aspects from the comics: Donald and Scrooge still hate him, Donald for Gladstone always winning and always having it easy while Donald.. is donald and thus utterly miserable half the time and on fire the other half, and Scrooge because he’s a lazy asshole who gets whatever he wants with the least effort, which didn’t change. What did change was his attitude. While he still is proud of getting whatever he wants in life with no effort and being “the best at getting something for nothing” he dosen’t lord it over everyone else. Sure he’s proud of it but he dosen’t rub Donald’s nose in how much better off he is on purpose, and genuinely loves his family, something I really coudln’t say about most versions of comic Gladstone. While he’s self serving he’s perfectly happy to share his luck with whoever else: He can always get more money whenever he needs it because of course he will. The other factor helping is , as with this entire reboot, the voice acting, in this case the marvelous Paul F Thompkins of Bojack and so much other stuff fame, who really sells the “Sleazy vegas layabout” vibe this series gives him, updating his old aristocratic asshole vibe to something more fun to watch and really being a treat anytime gladstone comes up. Gladstone singing in season 2 was entirely something Paul Improvised during his first apperance they made sure to use eventually. He’s a delight any time he shows up and a total 180 from his utterly agrviating original version.
As for why he’s here.. said luck. is gone. After being hit by some weird energy, Gladstone suddenly, since he didn’t see it hit him, finds himself living normally: going to a restraunt offers no free meal for being 100th custmoer or anything, his wallet dosen’t magically have 20 dollars in it, and the atm gives him 20 dollars.. which would seem normal except it’s actually usually a sack of rubys.  Naturally Gladstone having coasted his entire life on his magical luck, has no idea how to function as a normal human being and is utterly hilarious as he breaks down. Admitely he’s not the biggest part of the plot, he’s mostly here for comic relief and COULD have been eaisly cut.. but he’s so hilarious and seeing him utterly fail at being a normal person and whine about things as simple as walking or going up stairs is just groovy.  As for what weird magical bolt took it, Violet being violet figures it out quick: The Phantom Blot! For those unfamiliar, he’s a charcter from the mickey mouse comics, though I know him from one episode of house and mouse that adapted those comics that I need to read more of, a master schemer and old school villian par excellence and Mickey’s greatest foe. I was ecastic to see him come here and in the capable hands of Giancarlo Espisto. While I haven’t watched brekaing bad i’ve heard nothing but good thigns and he does his best with what little he’s given. But here instead of a master schemer he’s an infamous magic theif and is obviously the one who drained gladstone.. and unforutntely for scrooge the boys and presumibly everyone else... we see him in action using his fancy infnity guantlet esque magic draining gauntlet to drain the portal they took. Ruh Roh.  It gets worse when he mistakes Lena for magica, and charges after her, though Webby is able to hold him off with the axe she grabbed on the way to the door earlier, and damages his gauntlet. he retreats.. but it’s obvious he’ll be back and both Webby and Violet come to the conclusion Lena needs to grasp her magic in order to survive.. and both have the same unfortunate relization: They only know one person who can do it and Lena, once she realizes what hteir thinking, wnats nothing to do with her, and neither do they. But they have no options: they have to go to magica.  So they journey to her house on Dagobah, with Gladstone tagging along because they need a wacky comedic sidekick to help lighten the mood what with the serious, grim hunter wanting to murder a teenage girl inf nront of her tweenage girlfriend and kid sister, and their only resort being going back to her abuser for help.  Magica however isn’t all that helpful at first. Being Magica her first move is to make a grab for the Amulet to get her power back, which her running crew thwart quickly but naturally Lena still wants nothing to do with her and Magica just insults her for not using magic and because she’s a terrible person. SHe does however end up changing her tune when she hears the blot’s involved. She whisks them inside while we get a cutaway to FOWL headquarters where blot is working on his guantlet more on him in a minute.  We soon get the Blot’s backstory which is actually really inttresting and invovled even if it’s not a lot like who he is in the comcis or house of mouse: A long ass time ago before meddling kids got in her way, Magica took over a small vililage with the threat of destroying it and eveyrone in it outright unless they gave her tributes.. and when those got boring she just did it anyway. Problem was, as happens a lot when evil sorecerers calously destroy hometowns, one of them survivied. It’s even lampshaded by Magica as she points out Blot wasn’t the first. The problem was.. he was persitant. The blot never gave up, coming up with better tech to fight her magic each time and coming back stronger and likely more determined. I like this verson: While he’s not the bwahahah mastermindk, he’s still an utter threat, a force with an unyielding hatred and a burning mission to take out the target of his hate and anything like her. He reminds me a lot of toffee from star vs but if htey actually gave his backstory on screen. A meancing, somehwat quite, or mostly silent in the blot’s case, immortal menace who’s deterimiend to wipe out those who wronged him and anything related to them and has warped from what was once probably a decen tperson into a human engine of destruction with one goal and one goal only. He’s a good enoguh villian for the episode, I just hope if he comes back they give him better lines. his dialouge is really what dosen’t work for me as whiel his backstory and aura of meance work, Giancarlo is given nothing to work with line wise. He dosen’t need to be a chatty cathy or anything, just give him one or too really cool lines. Sometimes tha’ts all you need. Watch how the pros do it.

I do like this verison, I jsut think they could do more, but given the show has a good track record for only getting better with their villians with every use, I have no worries about that and he’s still a cool enough threat. I also wish we got more of fowl or why he’s working with them. just a small scene with one of them was all I asked, because we’ve barely gotten fowl this season. It’s really one of the season’s only real problems so far: 8 episodes in and while FOWL agents have shown up twice, adn one of the episodes did advance that plot by showing off heron and steelbeak, we really haven’t seen any progress on their plans to both take the missing mysteries or kill the Clan McDuck. HOpefully this changes as we go and again, it dosen’t ditract from the episode itself, jsut the season as a whole.  Anyways, Lena is still relucntant because Magica is terrible and keeps slipping in how much she wants to take the amulet every five minutes. I love the show and catherine tate’s take on magica: just as hammy and nuts as before but when she does have magic, she’s the utter threat she was before too times ten.  But yeah while Lena’s relunctant.. neither of htem really has a choice> Magica needs her amulet secure to get her magic back, and Lena needs to not die. So they relucntantly agree to work together among more hilarous sniping.  Cue a training montage set to a hell of an 80′s tune. The show really has a good habit of making good incdental music to use in bits like this. Lena trains, uses gladstone as the training dummy, and it’s funny as it is creative and we even get some karate kids bit and the obvious star wars refrences. Meanwhile the blot approaches ever closer..  We also find out something important from Magica as she chastises Lena for having fun with her friends while training after Lena uses blue magic instead of purple: Turns out much like spellcasters in say owl house or my little pony each caster has a specific color to their magic, a Colur of magic if you will. Magica’s, and lena using hers is purple while the blue magic we’ve seen from her is her own powered by friendship and love. It’s a nice advancement of what we’ve seen so far: We’ve seen her magic powered by webby is stronger than her other stuff, and we’ve seen it come out during times their bond, or in the case of kilmotor hill her bond with everyone, is strongest. We knew something was diffrent with the magics and it’s now given a though and clearly well thought out explination why: Magica’s magic is hers and Lena was just borrowing it.. the blue stuff is hers and hers alone.  Magica does try to get her to master it by having one of her friends shoot her.. Webby of course strongly objects so Violet takes it up since it is for study after all and her sister can take a hit. Lena also wonders how she can even do magic without the amulet, but as Magica makes clear, and as I outlined above, the amulet is just help. The blue magic is her. Lena fails to use it though to deflect in time.. and to make matters worse the blot shows up after plopping gladstone down and wants to kill them  both.  We then get easily the best laugh of the episode.. as Magica tries stage magic and the blot wonders what the hell he’s looknig at. I mean this is his mortal enemy, the monster who killed everyone he’d ever known or loved... pulling out a bunch of colored rags and asking him to pick a card. It’s amazing. Lena attacks from the side and Webby and Violet quickly asist, with Magica joining in to use the rope to bind him and Lena’s magic kicking in, turning the rope into chain and summoning a snake.. but in a show of badassery the blot easily shrugs it off: he absorbs the magic, escapes and knocks them around while Webby asks the snake for help.. can she speak snake? She hopes so.
Then things get dire as The Blot starts absorbing the magic.. and killing lena as she starts to fade away. Magica of course can’t even feign dispaointment in anything but loosing her magic. And that’s also something I really love here: The show makes no attempt to make magica better or turn around because it just isn’t who she is and even if she did after all the abuse she did, Lena would have zero reason to forgive her. It’s nice that they DON’T try redemeing her or shoing a brighter side: she’s a bad person, a worse caregiver and they only came to her because they had no choice.
But as the magic’s absorbed magica does tell her to find the source of the power and we get a great scene: She first thinks of all the abuse magica’s done to her and it’s a harrowing montage to watch. But webby, breaks through that, since that obviouslyf ails and reminds her of where HER magic comes from: Her and webby. and we get an adorable,a nd shiptastic montage as we see more clips from past episodes.. but this time we see their adorable fistbump from “Beagle BOy Birthday Massacre”, their hug from “Jaw$!” and Lena’s return to the world and hug with her lady and future sister from “Friendship hates magic”. IT’s her friends, her sister and the love of her life who are her real source of power, and her magic connects to htem as lena ccccchanges.  And I mean entirely, her outfit changes and she gets these.. weird bright blue eyes. Like I like the rest of her outfits, a white and blue attire to show her change with a badass cape, looks like a superhero so naturally I love it.. her eyes just look really off. Like when Milo Muprhy’s law tried to give characters colored irses. Because no one else in ducktales has them it just loosk.. weird.. Otherwise though I like it. We then get a beam struggle, but with adde dhelp from her friends and her new power, Lena eventually beats the blot, as her sheer power overloads the guantlet and sends him running. However in the confusion the amulet was lost.. and Magica gets it back. Lena whollops her easily, pointing out her magic’s purpose is to protect the world from people like her. It’s a nice development too: Lena realizes MAGIC isn’t inherently evil... it’s how it’s used. Star Vs could’ve maybe taken this lesson, but regardless, it’s a nice bit of character development realizing that magic is a part of her IS Her, and she shoudln’t have to give up something in her nature because of her abuser. Magica, while repowered, is force dto lookf or her staff while Lena gladly floats team magic home. Also with the guantlet broken gladstone is back, as a rain of 20 dolalr bills he uses as tissues confims, and the portal returns, and with Lena you know, havin ga whole superhero outfit, glowing blue eyes and her hair streak now blue, they know something clearly happend and the episode just kind of ends. Still a good one.  Final Thoughts: This was a good one as I just said. While I had my nitpicks here and there as I also said, Lena’s strong character, and the game performances of Espisito, Thompkins, and Tate really add to our usual trlo, and as I mentioned before it’s nice ot see team magic get their own episode now their a full team. IT’s just a good romp and a good way back. I”ve made my complaints clear but their drowned out by good jokes, good character stuff, and good worldbuilding that makes this an utter thrill and a great one to come back to and i’tll also be intresting to see where Lena goes from here.  But wherever she goes she’ll have webby. They can be whot hey are, independent together, if theyt ry. And yes that’s my shiping song for htem and yes I have one.
Tumblr media
Quick bit before I go I dind’t get to, Gladstone flirts with magica when she lands in his arms, a little something for the shippers and a nice gesture on frakn’s part. Whle she rejects him and he dumps her in the sludge with a shrug. I mean.. their probably going to bang at some point. Gladstone’s powers mean he’ll likely find her when sh’es super horny and more than willing, and he’ll be like “eh why not boobs”. I mean I thought about this: I figure his powers allow him to find a willing partner, any gender or none at all I see him as pansexual, who happens to probablyb e loaded and diseased free, whenever he happens to be into it who naturallyw orks out perfectly because if he gets money whenever he wants it, why not sex? It’s not even a concious thing as we’ve seen things just work out for him so of course he probably gets laid, and as we see here it’s only if the other person consets. Good for him. Hope to see him again sooner. I want to see more of him and della interacting and see what she thinks of him. Freshe eys andall that.
But yeah this was great to come back to. If you liked this i’ve reviewed the rest of the season up to this point and will be reviewing each episdoe every monday till they stop again, so keep an eye out for that.  You can check the tabs on my blogs for more reviews, come back this weekend for regular loud house coverag,e follow for more reviews or shoot me a pm if you’d like to comission me to do an episode. For just 5 bucks i’ll review any episode of any animated show of your choosing, and as i’ve only covered one season 2 episode of ducktales, there’s over 40 left ot choose from if you have any you want to hear my thoughts on. Until then stay safe, quack hard, and Go Team Venture! Play us out Steg .. and Co.

Tony's Assumptions
Pairing: Reader X Steve (mentioned/very heavily implied), Reader X Steve X Bucky (mentioned once)
Characters: Tony Stark, Steve Rogers (mentioned), F.R.I.D.A.Y. (mentioned), J.A.R.V.I.S. (mentioned), Bucky Barnes (mentioned)
Rating: 12+
Warning: Very vauge mentions and implications of sex and threesomes, suspected pregnancy, some very minor swearing, invasion of privacy, it's pretty bad - if that need a warning?, the characterisation of Tony not everyone might agree with
Synopsis: When Tony finds out about a medical procedure (Y/N) has made an appointment for, he jumps to conclusions and takes the first opportunity to talk to her about it, even if that does happen to be at 3AM.
Words: 1.4K
You were in the kitchen when it happened. You had only ventured out of your room to pick up some of the cookie dough that you had been craving, when the one and only Tony Stark stopped you.
Although you were used to seeing Tony and the other avengers around, given that you lived at the Avengers Compound, it still made you jump.
"Oh! Hi Tony, how come you aren't on the mission? I thought it was a big one." You said after you realised that it was just Tony who had gently grabbed hold of your forearm, not an intruder.
"Nothing they can't manage without me. I'm sure lover-boy has it covered." Tony responded as he quirked an eyebrow at you. "Why? 'You particularly worried for any reason? You think Cap might have his mind on other things?" It was at that point that it started to sound more like Tony was interrogating you than making friendly conversation.
"No, not that I'm aware of anyway." You answered cautiously. "Why Stark?"
"No reason. Anyway, it's 3AM, what are doing in the kitchen?" He quipped. He let go of your arm and leaned back against the counter top cooly, with his arms crossed over his chest.
"I was craving cookie dough." You murmured as you remembered what you we're doing in the kitchen before Stark had interrupted you. You walked past Tony to the cupboard containing the packet of heaven on earth. "And now I have what I came for, I'm going back to my room. Night Tony, don't stay up too late."
"Wait (Y/N), we need to talk." Tony sighed and walked after you.
"Isn't that what we've been doing?" You questioned as you furrowed your eyebrows, holding your cookie dough closer to your chest.
"Yeah, no. This is pretty serious, we'd better do this in my lab." Tony muttered looking down at the floor and shaking his head.
"Okay..." You trailed off and quickly followed Tony to his main lab that was only two floors above the kitchen. He had insisted that you take the elevator though; He said something under his breath about how you shouldn't have to take stairs in your condition, which confused you no end.
And then, there you were. Sat in Tony Starks' lab at 3AM trying to work out what was so bad that he had to do this. This being taking you to his lab, making you sit down, and then pacing back and forth for what seemed like hours, while occasionally sighing.
"Okay Tony, whatever it is, just stop pacing and tell me." You snapped, finally growing tired of the sound of his feet padding against the floor. "Wait, it's not Steve is it? Please Tony, don't tell me it's Steve." You practically begged as the possibility of why Tony seemed to be tiptoeing around you sunk in.
"No, (Y/N), Steve's okay. And so are the rest of the team. Please calm down, stress is bad for you, especially now." Tony blurted out with wide eyes as he took in the near hysteric state you had worked yourself into at the thought of Steve being seriously injured or worse.
You were too busy trying to take deep breathes and repeating to yourself that Steve and the rest of the team were okay to even pick up on what he had said about how 'stress was especially bad for you right now'.
"So why am I here then?" You barked out, honestly still a little out of breath from your brief panic. Before Tony answer you with another question (like he had the frustrating habit of doing), you took a big bite of cookie dough straight from the packet to indicate that you wouldn't be talking again for a while.
"Well, you see... F.R.I.D.A.Y. has some features that J.A.R.V.I.S. didn't. Just little programs mainly, apart from the whole voice and personality aspect. But one of them is to flag up any emails passing through the Compound server that indicate a health problem with whoever is receiving or sending them. That makes sense right?" Tony rambled. His hair was now even messier than it had been before due to how many times he had ran his fingers through it in his brief explanation.
You simply nodded and made a gesture with your hand to continue as your was mouth still full of cookie dough.
"Okay, well, earlier F.R.I.D.A.Y. flagged up an email that was meant for you..."
You nodded again for him to continue.
"It was a confirmation email for an appointment for an ultrasound scan..."
Yet again you nodded, having finished the cookie dough in your mouth but choosing to stay silent. You honestly had no idea where Tony was going with the conversation.
"Why didn't you tell us (Y/N)?! Or at least Bruce and I! He's a doctor and I'm a genius." Tony practically screeched, appearing to finally snap out of his stoic trance.
"No offence Tony, but why would I tell you? It's not exactly your business, is it?" You answered back exasperated. As bad as the Civil War and being on the run afterwards had been, you couldn't stop yourself from longing to be back then, when you actually had privacy, well more privacy than you did with Tony around anyway.
"What do you mean why wouldn't you tell us? Do you honestly think a normal hospital could deal with that? With everything the serum did to Cap, who knows how it would effect a baby. And if the baby wasn't affected by the serum, do you know how many medical problems Steve had growing up? Most of them have the potential to be hereditary! You see what I mean (Y/N)?"
Finally what Tony was saying had sunk in. He thought you were pregnant. You weren't of course. The scan that had sent Tony into this frenzy was for a completely unrelated medical problem you had. When you tried to correct him, Tony cut you off before you could even get a word in.
"And that's assuming that it is Roger's. I mean, we all know you and him are very... How do I put this without being offensive? -You and Steve are very *close* with Barnes. Realistically, in order to see what we'd be dealing with we'd have to do genetic testing as soon as you entered the second trimester-" This time, it was you who cut off Tony.
"Woah, woah. Hit pause there for a minute Stark. First things first, I'm not pregnant. Secondly, I can't believe you would so much as dare to imply that you would have the right to demand to know the parentage of said baby. And lastly, even if I was pregnant, it wouldn't be any of your business until we decided to tell you about it!" You had stood up by this point, and without realising it you had ended up resting your free hand on your stomach, as if you were protecting your non-existent baby from Tony's words.
"So you are pregnant!" Tony announced victoriously.
"No. I really am not."
"Look at you (Y/N), your stood there holding your stomach, eating the food you admitted you've been craving, you have a disrupted sleep schedule and you're booked in for an ultrasound scan. You can't fool me." Tony seemed oh so smug about what he thought he had uncovered.
But you took great joy in proving him wrong, that's for sure. "I always crave cookie dough, so you can cross that off your list to start with. I'm up this late because I miss Steve. I can't sleep well without him here, okay? And that ultrasound scan isn't even going to be of my stomach; The scan is for a completely different problem I'm having, that is also nothing to do with you." You retorted as you walked towards the doors. "Now, I'm going to bed if you're done with this absurd... Interrogation!"
There was nothing more Tony could do than watch as you left the lab. Well maybe he could have gone after you, but given how he had clearly offended you, he decided to give you some time. But one thing was for sure, that night turned out to be a very interesting story to tell Steve when he got home from his mission.

MN, Ground:  Day 22, Concert Broadcast
DIRK: -tonight is the night of the concert... but he's been stuck in bed, having run out of mindless tasks to occupy himself with. somebody can probably roll him to the living room later... for now, he turns the pendant around between his fingers over and over while staring up at the ceiling.-
RUFIOH: -large wing swoops by the window. Somebody's taking a flight outside, it looks like.-
KANKRI: -Is he leaving forever?-
DIRK: -stares out the window then. look at him go.-
RUFIOH: -lands in some tree and kicks back. Casually lighting himself some nip... before raising it to acknowledge that he DOES see Dirk.-
DIRK: .... -looks back up at the ceiling for a second, then crawls out of bed to open up the window and peep at rufioh-
DIRK: Hey.
RUFIOH: -takes his time with the hit before breathing out.- sup, man... long t1me, no see.
DIRK: No joke. I was expecting it to be longer.
DIRK: How did you even get here?
RUFIOH: mm.
RUFIOH: 1t's got to do w1th mak1ng we1rd acqua1ntances on avalon... and some portal hopp1ng? that sh1t was pretty scary...
RUFIOH: but next th1ng 1 knew, 1 was on the sh1p. and then breach1ng the atmosphere on one of those... emergency pods...
RUFIOH: flew the rest of the way. fast, h1gh, qu1et to myself so nobody saw me.
RUFIOH: met up w1th the folks 1n earth canada... now 1'm here.
DIRK: -raises brows- Damn. You've had one hell of a journey.
DIRK: It's good to see you again. Just a shame it has to be under these conditions. -leans a little heavily on the window frame-
RUFIOH: yeah... -eyeballs him a lil, flicking the cig.- some scar that's gonna be.
DIRK: -grunts- Pretty cool, huh? -barely even trying to sound like he believes that-
RUFIOH: looks pa1nful. -rises to stand on the branch again.- wanna hang?
DIRK: -pauses for a second. he wasn't really expecting to be asked that.- Uh... -but he wants to lay in bed all day???-
DIRK: Yeah. Sure.
RUFIOH: -gestures for him to follow and then flaps all the way up to the lake house roof. Bird perch.-
ARADIA: -standing in the doorway of the room dirk is in. like a normal person does for long periods of time-
DIRK: -he definitely doesn't have the energy to scale the house right now.... THOUGH HE IS FULLY CAPABLE... anyway, he turns so he can make his way to the stairs that lead to the roof's terrace, only to see aradia.-
DIRK: -JUMPS- Shit-- How long have you been standing there?
ARADIA: a while
DIRK: -makes a face-
DIRK: Well, I'm heading up to the roof to hang out with Rufioh. You wanna join? -starts shuffling around her-
ARADIA: -lets him shuffle around her without moving out of the way before turning to follow him- okay
DIRK: -geez, aradia... well, there he goes, ascending to the floor and looking around for rufioh-
RUFIOH: -just sitting up there, cross-legged and having himself a smoke. It just so happens that it's also been a while since Rufioh saw Aradia around. He eyes her, surprised but also not surprised to see her.- sup meg1do.... been a wh1le.
ARADIA: -follows behind dirk and smiles at rufioh, waving- ill say
ARADIA: its about time you got here :D
RUFIOH: 1 was tak1ng 1t easy, 1 guess... but not too easy. -Join him. Sit with him.- 1 have a wr1ggler.
TAVROS & GAMZEE: =They are a ways from the safehouse people are in, in apparent conversation. Tavros' shoulders are slouched, head turned away from the other troll while they talk. Gamzee stands taller, and is using his hands while he speaks. Sometimes Tavros looks back at him, at the hands, fidgets, and looks away. Gamzee's body language seemingly growing more frustrated, hands waving a bit in the air while struggling on what to say. Then placing a finger to his own temple. It makes Tavros look back at him, and they both stand still. More fidgeting from Tavros, and he rubs the back of his neck. Whatever they are talking about don't seem particularly comfortable for either party.=
RUFIOH: -peeks from the roof... concerned.- }:(
DIRK: -glances over at them as well, brows furrowed, but takes a seat with rufioh for now.- You do?
ARADIA: -she plops down next to rufioh- tell me everything
RUFIOH: oh yeah... he's th1s egg 1 found when a y1pbeast tr1ed gett1ng away w1th 1t for lunch... 1 guess from the hatch1ng caverns on avalon.
RUFIOH: d1dn't know what else to do w1th h1m except... keep h1m unt1l he hatched? 1 d1dn't th1nk he would anyway.
RUFIOH: now he's just k1nd of... eat1ng everyth1ng 1n s1ght, haha.
RUFIOH: h1s name 1s em1let... l1l egg bro. }:)
ARADIA: thats great! where is he now
ARADIA: on the ship?
TAVROS & GAMZEE: =Tavros' mouth is moving, and whatever he is saying is making Gamzee's hands drag down his face. Drags, then a rub, and he shakes his head. He waves his hands around again, and Tavros' shoulders grow tense. The bull troll makes a vauge handgesture to all of Gamzee, then inclines his head to the side before shaking it. A brief laughter, uncomfortable and uncertain. Gamzee lets out a frustrated noise followed by a loud "ain't you a fucking doctor or no?" that sounds both angry and confused. He's turning away and motions to move, but Tavros grabs his shoulder before he can. There's silence again, then Tavros speaking with his head ducked. Gamzee still appears stressed, hands in tight fists, but then easing.=
RUFIOH: yeah, he's... safe. -eyes this conversation with more concern.- }:((
ARADIA: -also watches in front of them. that looks about right- im glad you could join us
DIRK: ...
DIRK: -glances at rufioh- Do you know what's up with all that? -gestures to tavros and gamzee talking-
RUFIOH: -looks off, avoiding his eye. Dragging the cig more.- not sure...
TAVROS & GAMZEE: =They're standing close, Tavros doing most of the talking by the looks of it. No doubt rambling by the way his mouth moves. The hand holding Gamzee's shoulder is gradually tightening until Gamzee has placed his on top of it, gently prying it off. He pats it, and Tavros withdraws his hand. Gamzee watches him while Tavros avoids his eye, looking down and shrugging. The capricorn rubs one eye with his palm as they both continue to stand there in silence, then reaches out to unfittingly give Tavros a playful shove to the shoulder. It makes Tavros take a step back, surprised, but he's looking up again. Gamzee says something, Tavros lets out a faint laugh, but at least it has a twinge of humor to it even if it's half hearted. He says something back, taking a step to return the shove, then the two of them walk further away from the house together.=
MEULIN: -She's watching this herself from inside, tail swishing contemplatively. She should talk to Gamzee later...-
ARADIA: -it's always a relief to be completely sure that they're in the right place, and even little things like this are enough evidence. she watches them walk off, her wings fluttering while she sits- guessing in order to fill in the blanks sometimes feels better than just not knowing
ARADIA: but it can also be completely wrong and steer you away from your original purpose -aradia tf you talking about-
DIRK: -watches them walk away, relieved they seem to have worked out whatever was going on with them, before looking at aradia.- ...
DIRK: I see.
RUFIOH: -side eyes her before frowning.- ...
RUFIOH: 1'd rather not... be left to f1ll the gaps. but that's just me.
ARADIA: i think most people feel that way
DIRK: -goes quiet after that. unfortunately, he's got too many unfilled blanks in his thoughts right now, and his mind can't help but guess. he just wishes it did make him feel better.-
RUFIOH: -passes dirk the blunt. He feels him thinking.-
DIRK: -hey, maybe that will make him feel better.- Thanks.
DIRK: -accepts it and takes a hit, staring off at the landscape.-
ARADIA: theres something about earth that feels worth saving
ARADIA: and i dont know what makes the distinction
DIRK: -stares at her- Was that ever a question?
ARADIA: -shakes her head- ARADIA: i mean that theres something
ARADIA: special about it
ROSE: -She's down in the lower floor, having set up some kind of large whiteboard with some dry-erase markers. Some kind of chart, at a glance, though no one's going to see the details til later, when they come back down.-
RUFIOH: what k1nd of spec1al? 1 mean... -brings his knees up to rest his chin on.-
RUFIOH: 1f you're go1ng out of your way to ment1on 1t... the spec1alness.
RUFIOH: compared to every other place people have tr1ed sav1ng.
ARADIA: thats what im wondering
ARADIA: it seems to have something the other planets dont
ARADIA: given the extent of the conquest
RUFIOH: not sure 1f that makes me feel better... -sighs-
ARADIA: -looks over at rufioh- doesnt have to
ARADIA: i just notice it you know?
RUFIOH: yeah... 1 know.
ARADIA: -softens her expression and just lightly touches his arm, silent.-
RUFIOH: -rumble rumble chirrs. A comforting sound.-
DIRK: -he has some ideas, but he already feels like enough of a downer, so he just glances off, exhaling smoke.-
ARADIA: -chirrs softly in response, only momentarily, hand still on his arm. sadness. pain. it's all inevitable at one point or another. but she will gladly sit with both of them for as long as they feel alone. now, she watches dirk-
DIRK: -the gaze seems to pressure him to speak and he huffs, passing the blunt back to rufioh.-
DIRK: I don't think special is the right word to describe Earth's role in all this.
DIRK: It implies there's some big cosmic scheme, putting this planet at the center of some kind of turning point in this war.
DIRK: But here's what makes it different from Beforus and Europa -- The Condesce already had control of it.
DIRK: Both of those planets were once a part of the Empire, or founded by former Alternians. Which means they seperated from the Condesce's regime, and at no point was she able to dig her claws into their government.
DIRK: She destroyed them to teach them a lesson. That they should've taken her side a long time ago.
DIRK: -sighs- Earth and humankind thought they had the upperhand after the War of Alternian Repression, but I wouldn't be fucking surprised if the empress "disappearing" was all just a ploy for her to give them a false sense of security, lure them into forming T.U.M.U.T. and then using her connections to Skaianet and Crocker Corp. to hallow Earth out from the inside while fucking up as much of the galaxy as possible through stooges like us who actually believed we were repairing the damages she had done.
ARADIA: youve thought this over a lot
ARADIA: youre doubting yourself again
DIRK: Doubting what? Those are just the facts. -seems irritated now...-
ARADIA: through stooges like us who actually believed we were repairing the damages she had done
ARADIA: what you said was full of facts and truth but thats what im talking about
MEULIN: -She's leaning out the window below them, just reading what's on her glasses. She doesn't want to climb up and interrupt... but listening is something she can do. Maybe it's mostly all she ever does. It's hard to have the power to help. Maybe that's what Dirk means, too.-
MEULIN: -She leans on the sill and sighs. She keeps telling herself that it doesn't matter how she feels, that she's here for everyone regardless... but being here isn't enough, either, and maybe it does matter how she feels. It matters enough to get in the way, after all.-
DIRK: I hate to break it to you, but that's as factual as anything else I said.
DIRK: We were used and we've been floundering to get back on our feet since then. Even with all this divine fucking intervention, we're as useless as we ever were. I shouldn't have believed there was any point in fighting.
DIRK: -he immediately regrets the words coming out of his mouth, if only because he doesn't want anyone to know he's thinking these things. he definitely doesn't want anyone to feel that way, too, so he gets up quickly so he can make his way back into the house.-
DIRK: ... Forget I said that.
ARADIA: -she's still trying to do her job, trying to keep them on track, but something in what he says stirs something that makes her eyes water even though she doesn't look sad in the slightest-
RUFIOH: -looks between Dirk and Aradia... not saying anything. He's not especially good at these things in the moment. Hell. He's notorious for making bad decisions on the subject if left to his own devices.-
RUFIOH: -but he does hold Aradia's hand. Just wordless about it.-
---
DIRK: -there he goes, DESCENDING THE STAIRS. he's upset, but instead of retreating back to his room, he paces through the house until he happens upon rose's white board.-
ROSE: -She seems to be sorting out members of the crew based on injury and ability...-
ROSE: -maybe not necessarily the BEST source of inspiration for a cause here-
ARADIA: -it's confusing sometimes, when she thinks she's entirely positive and certain of the route they take only to be reminded of all of the bad routes, the wrong ones. it's hard to remember. it's hard to cycle between feeling numb to it and not numb at all. she's not sure what part is making her feel to this extent, but her fingers intertwine with rufioh's and she tries to ground herself by focusing on the physical connection.-
RUFIOH: -He breathes out. Not knowing what's on her mind exactly... but hoping that even for a minute, reality will make sense if he just holds her hand. As they sit quietly, a breeze comes to ruffle their hair. It's nice.-
DIRK: -just kinda hovers there, reading over everything she has written down. he's awfully overwhelmed, but hey, he's here so he should get involved in the planning probably.-
SOLLUX: -He's inside, in a room on his own. Right now, it's where he wants to be. He doesn't think he can handle the thoughts and feelings of anyone else right now.-
JOEY: =she's downstairs with a mug of coffee in hand and slouching lazily in a chair near the whiteboard as she reads it over, ankles crossed.=
ROSE: -She glances at Dirk as he arrives.-
ROSE: Hello.
ROSE: I didn't want to sit around too long.
ROSE: I'm growing restless.
ROSE: I think this might be useful.
ROSE: At least. I know not everyone is in a strong enough condition to fight, when it comes down to it.
[[Out of nowhere, a wrapped sandwich hurtles from the minifridge and slaps Sollux on the side of his head. A water bottle also falls from the counter, rolling across the floor until it came to a stop at his foot.]]
ROSE: -She pays the sandwich NO MIND.- ROSE: Most of the crew presently stranded in Alaska-- though I believe they're on the move-- we are going to want to keep away from the action.
ROSE: We lost two up there. They've faced the harshest conditions out of anyone.
ARADIA: -it would be pretty difficult for anyone to guess what's on her mind--it's so complex and vast and endless--but rufioh's right in thinking that any sort of physical sensation is making everything feel that much more real. the breeze does. the sound of his breath. the way her palm feels pressed up against his. tension she didn't know was there in the first place starts to ease-
DIRK: -nods slowly- Right.
ROSE: -TAPS HER WAND AGAINST THE BOARD.-
ROSE: We can probably look them over individually when they arrive, and I'm certain Dave is going to want to be involved, but we are going to have to hedge our bets.
RUFIOH: -It's as easy as breathing out. When he catches her eye again, he manages a lopsided smile.-
RUFIOH: -ruffles her hair with his hand now.- heh.
ROSE: -She takes a deep breath..-
ROSE: My implants burned out and I'm not going to be able to do much of anything with my abilities in a fight. Everyone else here in our group is in decent enough health, though.
ROSE: Physically speaking.
ARADIA: -she gently laughs and uses her free hand to wipe away the tears on her cheeks- sorry ARADIA: not sure what happened there
RUFIOH: someth1ng crazy... but uh...
RUFIOH: 1mportant, 1 th1nk. 1t's 1mportant to talk about th1s sh1t... even 1f 1t's bad.
RUFIOH: to try... and a1r 1t out so 1t doesn't st1nk up your th1nkpan.
DIRK: -rolls his shoulders and finds a chair to pull over, taking a seat next to joey.- In case I forgot to mention, we're kinda holding an officer of the Alternian army hostage here.
DIRK: Her name is Lucana. She might be able to help us with infiltration or... something.
ROSE: Good to know.
ROSE: For what it's worth, of course. She's probably not anyone important—
ROSE: -pauses to glance at him.-
ROSE: At least, no one they'd hesitate killing alongside the rest of us if given the opportunity.
ROSE: -She sighs again, going back to the board.-
ROSE: Our two other assumptions are that we're going to have to work a goal within a timeframe.
ROSE: Freeing Jane and Jade. Orchestrating a prison break. If there's time, destroying the entire facility, but that's in the ideal scenario where we're all able-bodied and unobstructed by an army of drones and soldiers.
ARADIA: you think so? ARADIA: even when people wont understand?
ROSE: -She's starting to pace now, a little bit.-
ROSE: They don't know you have her, so... maybe you can use her clearance to get inside and find information.
ROSE: And the rest of us can... fuck, I don't know. Hold out. Until Hal can get the ship back to us, or... something.
DIRK: Sounds solid to me. -its ok, rose, his leg is bouncing and he's wondering why he bothered to sit down.-
JOEY: =Wordlessly turns her cup around and offers it to Dirk.=
ROSE: -nods a little bit...-
ROSE: I, um.
ROSE: Feel like I may be obligated to tell you that Jane offered...
ROSE: ...
ROSE: For me to join her. ROSE: It may be exploitable, tactically. ROSE: At least for the sake of isolating her from the facility.
DIRK: -takes the cup, perfectly timed to sip it at rose with raised brows-
DIRK: She contacted you specifically with an offer to join her?
ROSE: Yes.
JOEY: you didn't decline outright, did you? =tilts her head towards dirk= he's right, we could use something like this, but how do we know that they won't do the same funky headspace thing that happened to jane and jade. =she waved a hand around her head=
JOEY: jane wasnt ever like that in the time that i knew her. they did something to her that made her do all those things, i know it.
ROSE: Yes, I...
ROSE: Suppose.
ROSE: And the answer being, we don't really know that.
ROSE: It's a calculated risk. If they could have done it to more than just her and Jade, then why wouldn't they have?
JOEY: well not everyone is an heiress or has zappy powers
ROSE: Of course not. But there's got to be more to it than that. ROSE: They captured Jake and Roxy, but the two seem to be under their own power. If they're going to use them, why not use them?
ROSE: Unless they can't.
JUDE: -creeps up on this conversation- I can't say for certain about jade
JUDE: but jane? she's always carrying around crocker corp tech... I kept TELLING her to throw it away but of course she didn't
JUDE: -points to his head- the tiara top, specifically... I'm sure it's a mind control device that they could hack into directly and control her
JUDE: who's to say they haven't done that with their prisoners by this point? I'm not sure why they captured them but maybe they're using them for something we just don't know about... something they're doing privately at the facility while jade and jane do the dirty work...
ROSE: Well.
ROSE: I wouldn't doubt that.
ROSE: Even if it's somewhat of a stretch to think that everyone is entirely enthralled.
DIRK: -grunts- She's probably usin' them for their abilities. Roxy can make shit outta nothingness. Jake can pretty much manipulate anything so long as he believes it's true.
DIRK: I figure she just doesn't need the rest of us. That's what makes Jane's proposal so strange to me.
DIRK: It might suggest she still has her own agency despite the mind control, if she wants to recruit folks from our crew. It must not have been in the empress' plan.
SOLLUX: -belated but WTF SANDWICH AND WATER OUTTA NOWHERE.-
SOLLUX: -his head jerks up almost immediately as it plaps him- g0d damn it t—
SOLLUX: ...
ROSE: ...
ROSE: Well, uh.
ROSE: Yes.
ROSE: I think that was definitely a part of it.
JOEY: =just...absorbs all of this before mumbling to herself= (how did my original timeline turn into one with teenage mutant ninja turtles?)
DIRK: - ... 👁️ 👁️-
ROSE: -stop....-
DIRK: -SIPS MORE- Cool.
DIRK: So we get Rose to seduce Jane.
MEULIN: -peeks in at this- OH???
MEULIN: 👁️ 👁️
ROSE: -NO-
ROSE: That.
ROSE: Really won't be necessary.
ROSE: I'm just going to take her up on her offer.
ROSE: And she'll know that something is up, because of a familiarity with me.
ROSE: ...
ROSE: And on account of that, I already know that she knows.
ROSE: Which gives me an advantage.
JOEY: =snickers=
ROSE: And. Is not seduction.
RUFIOH: -also peeking from a window to gaze.- 👁️ 👁️
JOEY: if you decide to go undercover, you might have to do things undercover
JOEY: you know
JOEY: to prove youre one of them
JOEY: =takes her coffee from dirk to sip it before handing it back to him=
ROSE: I think this was the exact reason I didn't want to share this potentially significant information in the first place.
ROSE: No.
DIRK: -😏-
JOEY: no ones gonna judge you, if you were worried
MEULIN: -while they keep talking, she's sniffing around the room... and then lifts open the window if it's not already open-
JOEY: ;)
ROSE: Oh mygod.
MEULIN: -HUP. She jumps out of the window. She's gone.-
ROSE: -looks out the window-
ROSE: -...why.......-
RUFIOH: -Meu why.-
MEULIN: -DONT WORRY. She's just heading for the lake!!-
JOEY: =she looked up from her device and crossed the room, turning on the TV. Glancing down at her phone once more, she flipped to the channel shown. It appears to be a concert.=
DIRK: -YES IT'S TIME-
DIRK: -he was waiting for this-
TYRENA: -She's been scarce for most of the time they've been here... except now, with the TV on. She's still laying flat on the ground but she's listening closely.-
DIRK: -WATCHING TAKODA LIFTED HIS SPIRITS A LITTLE... that and teasing rose earlier. but hey.-
JOLENE: -SQUINTS AT THIS CLOWN ON THE TV-
SUMMONER: =He's out and about somewhere, doing god's knows what, but he has a feeling his kismesis is doing something that makes him feel human homosexual down in his soul. Clenches fist mid flight.=
JOEY: =holy shit who is that cute little carapacian?=
DIRK: - 👀 -
DIRK: -it's snans undertale-
DIRK: ...
DIRK: Holy shit.
DIRK: -BAFFLED BY THE MAYOR'S VOICE???-
JOEY: =Actually jumps in her seat when the VOICE happens.=
DIRK: -smiles softly at qirin with her drum... gosh-
SOLLUX: -just listening to this in the bg-
TYRENA: -still on the floor like a mummy, but she appreciates this. quietly.-
JUDE: -lurks when he hears penny's voice on the tv... wowee, there she is. he's a little starry eyed.-
DIRK: -watching this is getting him so hype??? it's nice to have something positive between the anxiety and the numbness whoo boy-
DIRK: -dammit... his parents are cute...-
DIRK: -somewhere out there, he knows dave is crying. haha wimp.-
DIRK: -wait fuck he's crying too-
JOEY: =sliiiiiiiiides over a tissue box=
DIRK: -ffffffff.... takes the whole tissue box. but he's trying to hold it in. ffs.-
DIRK: -he's getting chills... yes, this is exactly what he needed to lift his spirits. but it's getting late... he should probably rest if he wants to be useful at all... but he's so hype.-
EQUIUS: -There's the sound of gentle, but heavy, steps-
EQUIUS: D --> I heard a ruckus. Is everything okay -His veins are deep blue, clearly from the poison, however, he is looking better.-
JOEY: you're looking lively
JOEY: your crewmates have blatantly challenged aych eye see
JOEY: it was glorious
EQUIUS: D --> Dirk, who the heck is this tiny human
JOEY: excuse me, i'm above average height for human women
JOEY: you're just abnormally tall
DIRK: -looks back at equius- This is Joey Claire.
JOEY: :)
EQUIUS: D --> One of the human refugees we were transported for
DIRK: -nods- That's right.
EQUIUS: D --> Okay. I surmise we are in Minnesota now, I seem to remember hearing that
JOEY: yup! it's a state.
