how does one go about reconnecting with cherokee culture? i wanted to join the nation to begin it but i feel like a thief because i am so white passing and disconnected..

Have you done your genealogy?

I'm also white and disconnected. All I had growing up was my grandma saying once that my dad's dad had cherokee ancestry, but that's it. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I did my genealogy and found my ancestors on the rolls, and then it took me another year of telling myself I was too white and disconnected and i would be stealing if I tried to claim cherokee before i felt like i could.

In my experience [which is biased towards cherokees that are active online], cherokees are mostly extremely open to people with cherokee ancestry reconnecting IF it's documented and you can prove it. 'My grandma told me her grandma was cherokee' is not proof, neither are photos or physical features. Cherokees are one of the most well documented people in the world with a bunch of rolls created both by the federal government and by our own tribal governments. If you had cherokee ancestors, they will be documented somewhere.

Genealogy is the most important first step, and you'll need to do it to enroll anyway.

This is a Facebook group run by experts in cherokee genealogy. They can run your lines for free and find your ancestors on the rolls if they're there. [It's very important to read the rules carefully, these guys get a lot of research requests and they are understandably short with people who don't read instructions. They're very quick though, i think right now they do research the day after a request is made, so if you request it today they might get to it tomorrow]

I know people on here often hate Facebook, but if you're living far from tribal centers [in Oklahoma and western NC] then Facebook is your best bet when trying to connect to community.

The genealogy Facebook group really helped me. Even though i already had found my ancestors when doing my own research, having someone else find the same things, find things i hadn't found before, and then a bunch of 'welcome home, cherokee!' comments came in, it made me feel welcome. And the guy doing my research ended up being a cousin of mine and he invited me to a group for descendants of this particular person. That helped massively in my feeling like i could actually reconnect and call myself cherokee.

a castles bookclub?

hello hello! i hope you're all doing well!

this is rather "scary" for me to announce but as you might know, castles will soon be coming to an end. i know, i know.

currently, i (roughly) know when that last chapter will be posted. i have an "optimistic" estimate, and a more conservative one. i want to keep both to myself right now because there are still a lot of moving pieces to consider, but i do have dates in mind.

as such, i was wondering if, ramping up to the end, there would be an interest in... doing a bookclub? i am going to be re-reading anyway because i want to re-read everything once as a finished product before reaching the end, and i thought you might like doing it with me? (😅 no worries if not).

my idea would be:

one chapter a week

i would probably be writing & publishing a post about the chapter. either an extended a/n (but done in retrospect/hindsight) or a post about a particular topic that is of interest to me in the chapter (i haven't decided yet)

i would also obviously be answering DMs, questions, anything about the chapter

anything else you guys might like (feel free to send in suggestions)

i think we can probably do this on tumblr, but i also wonder if you guys would like a discord server? i'm happy to create one if there's enough interest and if you think it would be easier for discussion, whatever suits.

is this exciting? or terrifying? i can't believe i'm reaching the end but here we are.

i will be making an official announcement once this comes to full fruition, this is just to test the waters.

So I read your rant (delightful BTW, I'm a nosey hater at heart lol) and am here to ramble too! :3

Firstly though, I'm really sorry for the situation you're in and hope it gets better. I'm lucky enough to have an accepting family (my parents and sister at the very least) and to have recently moved to western Europe where it's pretty progressive(?) in terms of lgbt stuff (ignore the fascists and right wingers behind me trying to access the governments), but I can imagine how isolating your experiences might feel. Hang in there, there are better things in store, I'm sure!

Now for the rest of your rant, I found that you've raised some interesting points, notably about how amabs can easily take on the lesbian label while some afabs have yet to claim it for themselves due to the homophobia they mightve endured and amabs probably haven't thus far (they probably dealt with transphobia as transfems, which I'm not gonna diminish no matter my views on transgenderism, but they probably haven't really dealt with lesbo/homophobia especially if they're pre-transition). Afterall, lesbian transfems were probably straight guys before, and their orientation is sure as hell not condemned by the wider society.

It kind of reminds me of this one lesbian transgirl ik who I met on a server on discord and formed a group of online friends there which included her. I knew her before she came out/identified as trans and I remember at that time she'd sometimes mention how she'd listen to lewd asmr of girls and such. She also talked about how she wished she was lesbian. So I, being the lesbian debator I am, basically said that that's not a great thing to say (I refrained from saying it sounds fetishy), but she replied with basically saying that I don't understand and that lesbian love or whatever is so "pure" unlike hetero love or something. So guess how I felt when she started identifying as a lesbian trans girl and later found out it's something observable in a portion of the online transbian community (not saying every transbian is like this, but still). (Oh yh she also (sort of?) cheated on her gf so there's that but I don't think it's related.)

I think I feel a similar sentiment as you in the sense that while I can sympathise with some of the struggles transfems may face, I find it irritating at times when people seem to go above and beyond to label/treat them as "the most sapphic and lesbian ever" as you put it, most of the time in an effort to validate their identity and place in the sapphic and wider lgbt community, when they probably never had to face the struggles afab sapphics were faced with since forever and more importantly some say some... Questionable things about their orientation and attraction to women. Not all obviously, but still. Am I making any sense lol?

I definetely don't think transbians have 0 place in the sapphic community, I think it's a complicated matter and there can be some gray areas (I also have grown increasingly distant from the (at least online) lgbt/lesbian community the past year so idrc about most discourse ig), but I kind of wish this was all treated more "normally" if that makes sense and that afab lesbians or sapphic could talk about certain things related to their orientation without constantly being scrutinised to make sure they're including trans folk in everything ever. I also kind of wish we could call out problematic behaviour in trans people without being called transphobic, but I think this applies to specific cases mostly.

Anyway I think I was mostly nonsensical here, apologies, but feel free to reply to whatever you managed to latch onto here lol.

hey!! so happy to keep seeing you here around these parts (my inbox, that is) and I'm glad you especially do get some enjoyment out of my far less polished vent posts :p I always feel bad when I post something so singularly interesting to me and me alone because it is just a full on personal blog moment, but to be fair to myself this entire blog is an exercise in actually voicing my own opinions and feelings for the sake of learning to express myself better, and it is nice to know even in the least poignant or least thought out posts, it isn't just fully self-beneficial lmao

I also (of course, as always) appreciated your response! honestly, I admire how level-headed and nuanced you can be with these topics, I myself often feel like I swing wildly from being harsher with my words and trying desperately to be as passive as possible to appease everyone, and I do have to say it is an ongoing challenge for me sometimes to strike that perfect balance between understanding but still standing by my convictions and not solely focused on people pleasing. it's a bit of a weird life, in my private time I do feel like I tend to be highly cynical and sort of an asshole lolol, especially towards other people, but in public I would never dare say any of the things I think because at the end of the day, I do still feel as if preserving friendly atmospheres among peers is paramount to being a productive part of a society. I'm like the opposite of the asshole with a heart of gold trope, in a way. gold with the heart of an asshole lmao

all that to say, I think you make some really astute observations that are still compassionate to trans women who identify as lesbian, while still pointing out the objective faults of their common language and behavior! I really think this (like so many issues whose current is pushed most strongly by the english speaking west) is a matter of semantics for the most part. labels, communities based on labels, and their inherent flaws I guess. because I really have no problem with someone identifying as a trans woman and also having a sexuality surrounding liking women, or if they want to talk about it or even if they want to define it separately than heterosexual attraction. it's their attraction, and I'm not the ceo of how people choose to define their own sexuality (and I wouldn't want to be, that sounds like a headache job lmao). for me, I think the issue really comes with when personal definitions of sexuality are enforced upon others, and when suddenly, highly personal definitions become community-defining ones. the term "sapphic" is such a great example of this weird treatment of labels and their definitions. the term "sapphic" can mean a lot of different things to different people, despite the fact that it is, at its core, a term held together by a single definition. in our society people will ideologically define every single word in a definition differently (ex. what does love mean? what does a woman mean (lol)?) and so even a fairly universal term can be personal based on one's own framework of thinking. BUT the thing is, a lot of transbians/people who identify as queer/tra positive/whatever you want to call the current hegemonic popular opinions of the lgbtq+ have taken to a personal definition of words like lesbian and sapphic, and have decided to supplant the originally fairly universal term and replace it with something that does kind of inadvertently alienate a lot of people who identify with the most "neutral" and non-ideological version of the definition (women who love/are attracted to women). instead, the basic definition has essentially shifted in its meta, though the words stay the same, the meaning is pushed to imply these terms can be understood as "someone who identifies as a woman who loves/are attracted to people who they identify as women" and that's just both too broad and too specific at the same time, excluding those who don't agree with the notion of identifying into what was previously understood as a sex class, and including people who wouldn't have even met the original definitional criteria to begin with. this, in turn, creates a vacuum in meaning, allowing for "aesthetic" to take over as the primary meaning of the term. I think that's where that "weirdness" comes in.

it's hard to find community with people who are coming at the definition of what the community is built on from a completely different direction. when I think of being "sapphic" (other than the brainrotting pop culture/online/algorithmically driven stereotypes) I simply think of being attracted to my same sex, that being female, and that being women. but, I would assume for transfems, they obviously don't have the simple way of just relying on same sex attraction as a definition, because they don't see the world in that way definitionally, and must apply more effort to justify why their attraction to women deserves to distinctively be defined from regular opposite sex attraction. that's where we get the strange insistence on sapphic love being more "pure" or making their entire personality curated towards "sapphic culture". in a way, though on the surface I am still pretty jealous that they get the privilege to express these thoughts and be backed up so strongly by people I know who would care less about me, I do feel bad that they must subconsciously feel the need to "prove" they meet the criteria for these labels because for them, there is no easy, biologically material fitting of the definition. I personally will have never have to care that much about fitting lesbian stereotypes or involving my life in sapphic culture. in fact, I basically can't not be sapphic. it's just the only way my future looks. it's the only way my attraction manifests. people will see me as a lesbian (well, that or a nerdy disheveled teenage boy at first glance lmao) just based on how I don't present in a way that centers men. it's the only way I fall in love.

and yeah, it really would be nice if there was space for a community where we could discuss that reality, openly, in mainstream progressive spaces! but for reasons that would be pretty bleak if we unraveled them, people would much rather play these games of labels and proving your place in them than creating avenues for people to congregate in spaces that actually bring them community and cater to their needs.

as always after these really really tangled word threads I slowly begin to run out of steam so I'll just wrap this up and say you made excellent points dear anon! maybe one day we can all just accept that sometimes definitions should be exclusive in that they exclude people who don't fit them, and not exclusive in the way that they exclude people who do fit them, and that afab women, and especially afab sapphics, deserve the right to preserve spaces for themselves without having to worry about appeasing men or anyone they don't want to!

and wow holy shit this is a whole lot of words trying to pick apart the way words can mean other words sometimes I would not blame anyone if they skim most of it lmao.

tl;dr the meta of labels and their definitions are kinda dumb and I'm maybe more dumb for spending so much time thinking about them

and lastly, thank you for the kind offer of your dm space as an area for venting! perhaps...I will take you up on that offer...it is inevitable I will be struck by another petty urge to vent about people in my life because I continue to work with people who are essentially the most fascinating but headache inducing parts of tumblr and twitter personified and I do still primarily have very "gendery" friends irl! we'll see if I end up having anything interesting to say about it though first, or if I can bear to actually talk to someone online once instead of passively yelling into the digital void!

One time I was on a discord server, I was in my early 20s (I'm still in my 20s tbf), server for the collecting of a certain item type. Some random drama happened with a user claiming to be abused at home, we tried to help. Girl got kicked because people got too sus about it.

Anyway, because I had been involved speaking to her, one of the mods contacted me in the DMs. Told me about the situation, and I was kinda shocked, so I asked a few extra questions. Call them Mod15

Well another mod then contacted me, and told me that Mod15 was talking shit about me, for asking the questions about the situation, and that Mod15 IS 15!!! I had no idea. That mod was really mad at Mod15 because 1) she didn't like that a mod was just 15 years old. 2) the mod had basically bought themselves into the role by buying the server nitro. 3) the admin didn't do anything/incredibly passive. Let's call that mod: ModP

I showed ModP the conversation with Mod15, and showed her that my talk with him was pretty basic bitch. But man did I fucking feel disgusted by this. I never contacted Mod15, he contacted ME. I deleted my entire talk with him. It was basically just "What happened? Is everyone ok? Do you know if she's ok." that stuff.

Side info: When I joined I also asked if they'd have a NSFW channel, just "because" it kinda was the norm to have one if the hobby had a lot of adults, even if it wouldn't contain anything sexually explicit. So it was made, but there was very little happening all things considered.

Well skip forward a few weeks. We had a vent channel, and Idk how it started. (I still have the screenshots from start to finish somewhere on another discord with a friend, but I'd need to look for them.)

But for some reason we started talking about how minors, who're minors entering the 18+ channel should be kicked from the server. The admin only made the NSFW channel "click to confirm" instead of role based, which is something that was discussed later between him and the mods I was told my ModP later. (Or another Mod I got to know.)

And guess whoms't but Mod15 would freak the fuck out and start an entire thing about it. He said we couldn't demand this blah blah. One argument he had was shit like "Well we see things like these on twitter, so why care if we see it here." and like, because this is a closed space. A lot of that kinda logic, that it wasn't a problem finding 18+ content anywhere on the web, and we shouldn't bitch about it.

Hell even some other minor and a lot of adults said that this was not a good point to make, and that these warnings and channels aren't made to "just keep minors safe", but to keep adults safe as well. And that adults have a right to want spaces where minors can't and won't enter. Anyway, this went on for far too long. I mean I think this thing went on for a few hours. Mod15 also freaked out when someone suggested making it role only.

Mod15 admitted to having entered the NSFW channel, which wasn't the great point he was trying to make, and one of the other adults admitted to having shared some bodypillow designs with Mod15. Which also wasn't a particular flex you'd make tbh.

ModP contacted me in that time, and another Mod, ModT, and they were actually annoyed that the Admin refused to do anything, and still wanted to keep Mod15. They had apparently also tried to make some specific roles before, but Admin just didn't wanna do it. You know, roles that give you identifiers such as "minor, male, female, adult" or pronouns etc.

They asked me if I could talk to Admin, and I did try, but Admin was so fucking passive, he said "Well, the problem was that you had asked about the NSFW channel." Not the fact that a minor decided that this was a free invitation to enter, or that the minor decided he had the random right to contact me about something, and then bitch about me to the other mods. That's when I decided I couldn't deal with this and left, if he couldn't even see how annoying it had gotten. At that point the collection discord had also grown considerably in size, because it got the "official (collectors) server" on reddit as well, and I didn't wanna stick around for the shitshow.

Extra info: The server did have an "introduction" channel, but it didn't have roles to give identifiers. And as probably anyone on a slightly bigger server would know, you start muting a lot of channels quickly. Admin tried to blame me for not checking the channel, in his DMs to me, when at that time there were constantly people joining and I had like half the channels muted to begin with.

You have no idea how happy this ask made me. It makes me so genuinely happy that you're so excited by Hestia and the idea of working with her. A lot of the sources I have listed are Hellenic Paganism based and not witchcraft based but the info should still be useful. A great way to gain information is to talk to people. I suggest joining a few discord communities, being active in the Hellenic Pagan (or witchy) spaces online and so on. There can be a good amount of misinformation but unfortunately that's kinda part of the process. Trust your gut, always double check stuff and be kind to yourself

Hey, I recently got back into writing drarry. I never really found a community on here (or anywhere 😅) to share that writing with, get encouragement, maybe a beta or some help with difficult scenes - anything. Do you have any advice?

I have a very stressful work schedule, so being online/replying everyday is hard for me. Maybe that is necessary to find people?

Hi my friend! Thank you for reaching out! I'd apologize for my slowness in responding, but maybe that's a perfect answer to your question. The short answer is: you're welcome here, with whatever time you have to share. We all have robost lives offline, and some spend more and less time around online than others. You're welcome here, even when you can't be online every day or be as responsive as some other folks might be.

In terms of practical advice, here are a few thoughts:

join the large 18+ Drarry discord (invite here). You can find beta readers and cheerleaders there (that's where I found my first when I didn't know anyone). I also like "sprinting" (writing in short, timed bursts, while other people write their own projects) as a way to build a little bit of community. EDIT: new link here

Post on tumblr when you can -- you could put out a call for betas here too. I'd also just suggest interacting when you can, reblogging other people, asking when ask games come up, joining in for open tag games, whenever you see them. Of course, when you're on less frequently some of these will pass you by, and that's okay -- just do them when you can and when they feel like fun.

Don't be afraid to jump into someone's messages or askbox to say hello. Mine is always open, as long as you're okay with a snail's pace of responses. I know that can be intimidating, but people around here are generally very kind and welcoming, and willing to say hello to new people.

Comment on fics and art, if/when you have the spoons. It's a great way to become more visible with active authors -- you could also ask authors or artists or reccers about their published projects to start up a conversation.

Share your writing and your interests! Whether in snippets, or in little anecdotes, or by reblogging things that feel connected to it and saying so in the tags or comments. It's much easier for other folks to engage with *you* if they have something they can ask about!

A couple other little tips I have found useful as I've grown less active in the past months: don't feel like you need to apologize for inactivity -- we all have lives, use the queue function on tumblr to space out your posts during times when you're not as active, ask folks what they're working on & they'll often turn it back to you, at times when you have more time to spare, offer help to others and they'll often offer it back... and so on!
