doing a half-assed rewatch of D2 as i work on a fic but. a thought on the Cotillian fashions--
Uma's dress is much more complimentary of Ben's. She has the gold, in jewelry and accents, and the military-esque epaulets which compliment Ben's gold and military-esque jacket. They're both in mostly blue, sleek looks.
They feel coordinated and intentional, presenting a united but independent front/pairing.
Mal's dress, especially before her transformation (dragon and literal), is very... individual. Obviously part of her journey over the course of this movie is to learn how to balance two parts of herself.
But the complete juxtaposition of her dress next to Ben's really speaks to the way their relationship plays out. She has no gold, no blue. She has yellow and purple (and later purple and black and green). The yellow is the same yellow that Belle wears, rather than anything that Ben is wearing. She has voluminous skirts that take up space, literally separating her from her friends and from Ben.
Mal does not compromise with Ben, does not compromise her chosen identities. She maintains her individuality, even if it isolates her.
Staying true to yourself is a good message for a regular relationship, but as rulers, not as much.
And of course, Uma and Ben's coordination can speak to the spell Uma has Ben under. But both their costumes are true to their characters without any huge adjustments, where for Mal to match Ben it would have to be a very different dress.
So just some thoughts on how Mal and Uma are presented in juxtaposition to Ben at Cotillion.

My brain is just happily spinning around with the idea of Match and Thad as a hero-villain married couple.
Suicide Squad did multiple things right for Match and one of them is making him actually want to be a hero (which is perfect development because it references the 2009 DC Holiday Special. Seriously, I can go on about my boy Match).
Because really as a villain how can you look at one of your best friends after the euphoria of reuniting and thinking the other was still dead, find out he's trying to be a hero now, and not think, "Well, I can't not fuck him at this point."
The friends to sorta enemies to lovers pipeline would be filled with so much conflict and sweet sweet tension.

Okay so this is one of those small yet crazy-making writer detail brain things and I have some of my own thoughts but. Out of sheer curiosity about other people's opinions. What do we think is holding up Imperial officers' trousers in Star Wars?
The belt is on the outside of the jacket so - do they have suspenders? Are the trousers personally tailored so you don't need a belt (which seems kind of inefficient for a monster-sized army)? Are they high-waisted enough that the belt on the outside actually does hold them up? Was whoever designed these uniforms a slave to fashion?
Cassian wears half an Imperial uniform for parts of Rogue One and while he's wearing the belt from his own rebel uniform over top of the pants, if you squint it sort of looks like there might be belt loops which suggests that the answer may in fact be "I was wearing a second, smaller belt underneath"???
Idk. Discuss.

LORD OF THE RINGS COSTUME ADVENTURES
And the poll has spoken! I just want to take a moment to express my gratitude for participating in this poll. I know I'm not the biggest creator on this platform, but I appreciate you all and it means the world to me!
I've been an aspiring costume designer since I was about 14/15, my first costume being a colonial garment for a planned field trip to a local fort. This passion of mine has been put off to the side for many years and I knew all I needed was a little encouragement to get back into it and to follow my goal of possibly making a name for myself and sharing my passion with others.
Now onto the adventures! I plan to do some research on the costume designs of the films, specifically Ngila Dickson. This, of course, will take time to do. The plan is to bring as much accuracy as I can, whilst trying to get into the head of who'd be wearing the costume if it were to exist in middle earth. This means hand-stitching elements, or giving some natural wear and tear, etc.
I will be creating a couple more polls to decide on what project to focus on first. I'll probably create a YouTube channel to post everything pertaining to this adventure and posting the videos here as well! I'll be creating graphics/gifsets as well in the meantime, so expect some of those! ( the gif in this post being a teaser )
P.S. I'm getting very excited to try my historical singer treadle machine, to hand sew items and embark on embroidery!
