I think when ppl say art doesn't feel "genuine" or otherwise express that they feel like it shouldn't count as art (like ppl do with like... rothko or picasso or fanart or manips or.....) it's bc they think of "art" as magic and "artists" as magicians. it's like a supernatural gift only given to a few.

but painting over a picture feels like something anyone could do, or learn to do, just like painting fields of color or abstract human figures or drawing or writing about characters that already exist. so they're disappointed/disenchanted, and they don't like it. so they claim it doesn't count as art (even though it does) bc they believe art is something it isn't.

I had a professor once tell us that "everything is art which means nothing is art"

anyone can make art, anything can be art, but people like to try and define it as something distinct with rules to make it easier to understand

it's definitely a bigger conversation that's been going on for decades

When people say "Your coworkers aren't your friends" thy aren't exactly wrong. Because the dynamics are different than they are with people you're friends with outside of work!

For one very obvious thing: You don't pick your coworkers. You don't decide to spend time with these people because you like them or enjoy spending time with them. And the reasons that you all spend so much time together are about a practical task, not the pleasure of each other's company.

And yet.

And yet you probably have things in common with your coworkers -- even those in different job titles or departments or whatever. You share things with your coworkers that you don't share with anyone else, and they are often not small things.

So yeah. You should try to connect and build relationships with your coworkers, whether you feel like the title friendship makes sense or not. Because when you do that, when you make an effort to learn about your coworkers and care about them, you can do some pretty cool things.

Sometimes that will be a union. Sometimes it will be pushing back against management without a union. Sometimes it will be creating a better work culture. Sometimes it will be showing up for each other in other ways, outside of work --- with babysitting and carpooling and helping someone buy groceries when their account is empty and being a shoulder to cry on when someone needs it.

But all of it matters. All great things start when we care about one another and build community with one another.

i think the whole "coworkers arent you friends" thing fucking sucks man. aside from the fact that enjoying the people you spend a major portion of your life around like actually improves your attitude, it is so dangerous for companies for their workers to be like. engaging with each other personally. you know like. unifying. unionizing. im not saying force your relationships at work but like. maybe engage a little more

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
