ooohhh violence. finally tracked down an old ao3 link for a deleted fic that has been haunting me for eight years, slapped that baby into the wayback machine, found a capture with the completed work before the author wiped their account, happily read the first chapter, and then found that the link to every subsequent chapter just lead to the "This work could have adult content" page and didn't have archived versions of any of the actual chapters themselves. why why whyyyy.
#any details about the fic itself at between me and god but it really influenced how I approach writing certain kinds of scenes#and I haven't laid eyes on it since I was 16#well. now I've laid eyes on the first 2k or so words. which is better than nothing. but still. Violence.#marina marvels at life

4, 5,and 6 for TDS trilogy? Any of them obvs :]
4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?
Honestly, as with most of TDS, all the little subtle things that are going on and the parallels with time, underlying motivations of characters (the people AND the pokemon involved). Whenever there are repeated words or phrases. For example in the last update, in Interlude, II - Lifeline when flash-forward Maxie calls Colress and says "Colress, I'm trying to keep this professional, I have a favor to ask you," and then in the next chapter, Icarus Maxie says "Colress, I'm--um. Trying--I have a favor to ask you." I do that a lot and I never get tired of it. Time is a flat circle etc.
Because I have so much of the trilogy plotted out and written already, I have a lot of opportunity to play like that both within the books themselves and between books in the series. For example there have been phrasing and imagery callbacks to Devil several times in Icarus already, and I added inklings of Icarus in Devil when I was editing it before I posted it. (I had started writing Icarus while I was finishing Devil - Devil was posted all at once after a few rounds of edits). There are hints of Mother Earth in Icarus. Etc etc etc. You get it.
Ophelia has kind of been on its own for a while, but it definitely influenced the way I write Colress and I'm considering how it fits in more in his characterization. I also may start releasing Ophelia at some point. It's like 80% complete and 120k words in.
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now!
"WAIT IS YOUR USERNAME SUPPOSED TO BE META OR SOMETHING" yes. yes it is >:)
Without revealing too much, while Maxie is the main protagonist, I consider the series to be Archie's story.
6. What’s one fact about the universe of [insert fic] that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
It's kind of implied in the worldbuilding but will probably never be explicitly stated, but my version of the Pokemon universe is like, superimposed over the real world. It's why I have them say things like "oh my god/gods" and "christ" etc instead of the traditional fandom "oh arceus" (which is a trope that I personally find distracting, but no shame to anyone who uses it. i've definitely seen some creative Pokemon Swears. just my preference). And why they mention real places like Hawaii as well as Alola etc. Both worlds exist at once.
The geography is weird and is not 100% hammered down in my head, nor do I think it needs to be, but as such, Hoenn is somewhere off the coast of Florida. Archie is a pirate of the Caribbean. Don't ask me why there's a volcano there then, I don't know. Unova is in New York (Castelia City either usurped NYC or is a LARGER adjacent city), Alola is near Hawaii, etc etc etc. Don't ask me where Kanto and Johto are, I don't know. The logic of my universe would set them in Japan which cANNOT be right unless it all functions like Phoenix Wright Japanifornia which at this rate, you know, it could. I know the logic of this would then also set Hoenn in Japan. But look. Archie and Maxie are Pokemon world's "Florida man" okay. I don't make the rules. They just are.

For the Awakening asks: 7, 12, 14, 16, 17, 29, and 30! ❤
Somehow I knew you'd be the first to send me an ask😂
Awakening Ask Game
7) What stuck with you after finishing this game?
What else but the ending? Even if I got spoiled on it way before playing Awakening myself, it wasn't any less stunning! Everything between the scene of the battlefield being Grima's back soaring through the ocean that manages to look awesome even in Heroes (imagine if this game had smooth battle transition like Fates and Echoes, gosh), Id(Purpose) being an absolute banger of a track and obviously the narrative moment!
Also the moment when you fight Grima for the first time, they lift their arm and their dragon head turns around to attack? Amazing, I would love to turn it into a gifset if I could run Awakening upscaled on the Citra emulator.
12) Your favorite cool details?
Well, since I brought up that moment anyway... You know the humanoid face that Grima shows if you damage them too much at once? It always made me curious since the bit about Grima having human blood and looking like a human fetus when they were created wouldn't be a thing about Echoes, so I wonder how much of the backstory about Grima basically being Frankenstein's monster was considered but ultimately rejected due to time constraints, only to be added in Echoes and Heroes than they got a chance to get back to it!
14) Favorite supports/couples?
Well, Chrom/Robin for starters and I'll be honest, that's mostly your fault😂
Others are Robin/Cordelia and Robin/Tiki (mostly because I've read really good fics for both of the pairs and really that's the easiest way for me to start liking a couple), Lissa/Maribelle and Maribelle/Olivia! Oh, and Basilio/Flavia. I can't believe those two don't have an S support ingame since their every interaction is filled to the brim with sexual tension.
16) Favorite platonic relationship?
Bedtime Stories opened my mind to the concept of Lucina and Morgan being the most chaotic siblings ever and I'm all for it
Another one would be Nowi and Tiki, main reason being that they both have someone to share their long, long life with and be a bit less lonely together. Besides, have you seen their art together? They're adorable!
17) Two characters that should have supported each other?
I'm just gonna cheat and say I wish we had supports between Gen 1 and Gen 2 characters without having the former be the parent of the latter😅
29) What’s an Awakening alt you want in Heroes?
I would love to see a young Lucina from the present timeline! Mostly because I'm curious about what would she be like since she hasn't had to deal with all the traumatizing stuff from the bad timeline unlike her future counterpart.
30) Freebie! Talk about anything Awakening-related that’s on your mind🔮
So, um, I haven't actually planned the rest of Blinding Light since the whole thing came out on a whim😅 But as I'm brainstorming the whole thing (and by that I mean daydreaming or thinking about it while I'm trying to sleep), I realized something a bit funny about context.
Take Walhart, for instance, and suppose he has the same goal in there as he has in canon. In the game his motivations are pretty flimsy, trying to conquer the world to prevent the alleged threat of Grima (when it's really just him fueling his god complex). But in this world, where it's abundantly clear that Naga is a threat to humanity as a whole (even if it's not in the usual extinction sense) and would have already started conquering Valm had it not been for her devoting her whole attention towards the "threat" of Plegia...
Then wouldn't he be slightly more justified in trying to gather an army, unify Valm by force and end the gods' influence once and for all, even if in truth it's just for a selfish reason? (Emphasis on slightly, he's still a brute who understands very little of what makes mankind truly strong, is cruel for no reason and had things been even a bit more realistic, his empire would have collapsed onto itself within seconds given his bigbrained strategy of "if there's a problem, just crush it with brute force", no matter how much the game tries to make him look like a nuance, morally gray complex villain. Huh. Reminds me of someone.)
Same deal with Validar! Without changing a thing about him, he still has more of a reason to want to restore Grima's true form, because here Naga is quite literally breathing down their neck and threatening to destroy all of Plegia, and the only reason she hasn't done so yet is because she is lacking her true form as well, and is preparing her army, so he has a point in wanting to get every advantage they can. Although he's still a prick in here and Grima still hates his guts, because some things never change.

How do you think Silver & Flint's relationship would have evolved if things hadn't ended the way they did in S4? How do you think things would have progressed through time? I tend to think about the what ifs a lot. I'm just curious what your thoughts are on it.
OOFT. I mean i have many thoughts! It’s... very hard to say really. Because i think one thing Black Sails does incredibly well is the way it builds a story and a character. Many choices made in this show are so dependent on what the characters want and who they intrinsically are and how they influence each other (willingly/knowingly or not), and i feel like there are many very complex interwoven roads that led them to the conclusion they got to. Which is one of the many reasons the finale felt like such a tragedy; you know things are going to end badly because you kind of see it coming. And dear god it does hurt, even with Flint being reunited with Thomas.
So. I think there are two ways to answer this question, and you can sort of divide them into canon-ish versus fanon wish. These may not exactly be clearly indicated bc like i said i have Many Thoughts, and i apologise in advance 😅 Another thing i’ll be looking at here is something we had to lay out for our characters when i studied acting - the goals/objectives/motivations of the character, and their emotional/mental state. None of this is meant to be critical against any character. I simply adore analyising them and the paths of the story, and I love each and every character i talk about here deeply.
So, looking at that finale. There’s several things that i could take from what you say about things not ending the way they did - for now, i’m looking at the confrontation between Flint and Silver in the woods, where Silver forces Flint to quit his war and reunites him with Thomas.
Firstly, let’s analyse what we get from the canon, and what i believe motivates these characters to bring them to the point they end up at. There’s that famous line i think of Silver where he says he doesn’t know anymore where he ends and Flint begins - their thinking patterns have become so intertwined, they basically share a braincell. The tricky thing about this is, just because he and Flint think similarly, share tactics, and a knowledge of how to use people in their means, just because they understand each other well, doesn’t mean they share opinions and morals. Flint especially seems to forget this. He believes Silver is with him in his cause to end Imperial rule. But from Silver’s final actions, it’s clear Silver values his personal wants and needs above that of this abstract crowd of people. He’s not oppressed - or hasn’t felt the effects of Imperial/religious oppression (as far as we canonically know) like Flint and Madi have. And that means he doesn’t have the same drive. He’s driven by his personal connections to these people, i believe, purely from his own point of view. Like, i suspect he struggles to place himself in the shoes of Madi or Flint to feel their pain and motivation. He can see it, he just... doesn’t fully grasp it. (There’s also a question of whether he wishes to, but i feel nowhere NEAR qualified on answering that, nor do i think the canon gives us enough material to give a perfectly cut & dry answer.)
So you have this big miscommunication. Flint believes that, because he and Silver have basically become one shared braincell, they have the same goals, while Silver is still driven from a point of selfishness. (Side-note: there was a moment in the show he became selfless! He wouldn’t give up his crew when faced with torture from Vane’s quartermaster! But then he lost a leg over it and it seemed to dampen that selflessness. I think from there on, moments where he seems to be motivated by the good of the crew come instead from an internal need to belong and be loved more so than a genuine sense of brotherhood. That brotherhood may still have been there, but i think he might have suppressed that instinct a little and instead let the more selfish needs take more of a front seat. Understandable and not bad/evil, like that’s super valid of him. But my point is, he’s not exactly ready to fight for another man’s cause he doesn’t have as much of a personal emotional profit in, especially when he knows it’ll end in certain death for everyone he cares about and he knows cares about him.)
So that’s sort of where the characters are mentally in that climax. I may be skirting details and summarising a bit hastily, but it’s also been a GOOD while since i’ve watched season 4, so i apologise. Flint (and Madi as well - she plays an equally important role i think!) is fuelled by a mix of rage born from oppression/discrimination, and a protectiveness for others who may suffer the same fate. Silver meanwhile is fuelled by a need much closer to home - to be loved and to keep those he cares for and deems important to him alive and around. I’ve framed it as their emotional drive, but really it is also their goal, their objective in that finale. Flint and Madi are looking to burn down an oppressive system while Silver... isn’t. For him, their goals stand directly in the way of his. And by the end of the show, he’s gained enough power to prevail in his objective, cancelling out those of Flint and Madi.
So, could it have gone differently? I think, if we wanna play with canon and keep it as close to canon as possible... It seems almost impossible. These people’s goals just do not align. (There’s that sweet sweet tragedy again.) So what you need for it to go differently in short is for one of, if not several, of these people to change their goal. But we’re talking their MAIN objective, their main driving force at this point in the show - so like, the chances of that are slim. ESPECIALLY if we’re talking about the canon characters. After all, for that, the characters would need to look inside themselves and fucking face up to some of their issues and work on them. (This is something which these characters are not very prone to do, bc jesus it’s a mess in there and if that were me i’d preferably not turn introspective either and be forced to look at all that.)
So if we wanted Flint to change his goal, he’d need to come to terms with the Empire being untouchable - which is bullshit bc like my man has a POINT, just because they seem to be able to be brought down doesn’t mean they ain’t - and to accept the homophobia and oppression they treated him and Thomas with, which, yeah fuck that, absolutely not, his rage and his goals are valid as FUCK. If we wanted to change Madi’s - lmao like listen i understand wanting her and Silver happy together bc we ship EVERYTHING in this house, but she’s poc and proper royalty and wants to end slavery. We ain’t touching her goals. So that just leaves Silver. Silver would need to face a part of himself that keeps him from placing Flint’s goals, or Madi’s goals, over his own. (I suspect we circle back to that insecurity and need to be loved, which defo stems from whatever trauma he swears doesn’t affect who he is today.) So for that he’d uhh... need therapy. And a shit tonne of it. But then you still have the issue that Flint and Madi will likely fight their war (bc they DESERVE IT), which may lead to what Silver considers inevitable - that they will die early and horribly, and he ends up all alone.
So, looking at playing with the canon-ish to change things? It’s gonna end in tragedy. There’s doesn’t seem any other way about it, i fear; not with the way these characters were written, with who they are and what drives them and what they want. If it doesn’t end in tragedy in one way, then almost certainly in another.
So what are our other options? What if we look at the fanon wish - whether it’s silverflint, or silvermadi, or madisilverflint, or just to have these kids be fucking happy? Well, you know what? Maybe it DOESNT have to end up in tragedy. Maybe, if Silver does align himself with the goals of the people he loves - after learning to communicate and place himself in other people’s shoes and prioritise the needs of his loved ones and compromising and all that jazz (god this boy needs therapy that only the fanon can likely give him, rip) - he could join them in their war. And maybe, his genius and creativity and quick wit will in fact propel their cause forward and help so much, none of them dies an early gruesome death. It’s not impossible! It just requires that sweet sweet character growth he doesn’t get the opportunity for in canon.
Another option, and this one is perhaps a little more plausible if the show had no episode limit or a desire to end in tragedy and “align” itself with “history” (they’ve played fast and loose with real history i’ve learned, and like,, it’s a story about fictional characters so why did it have to align itself with history?? Okay fine, as a prequel to Treasure Island, it still needed to end in tragedy for Silver bc we know where he ends up. Were there no Treasure Island and no rules and we could do what we wanted with the show and write a new ending, then what?). This one is more popular, you see it in loads of fics and i like it a lot. Silver sends Flint to the plantation. Flint and Thomas break out and get their war anyway. They’re pissed at Silver for a bit for being a selfish dick shitting on Flint’s dreams, but like,, it’s not as if it stopped Flint. (We can even look at it like Silver knew they’d probably fight their war and have better odds with Thomas in the mix, giving them a better opportunity - but like, that’s just a fun headcanon to play with that i don’t think aligns with what he explicitly states to want in canon.) And then, after some years, everyone learns to communicate and talk things out and maybe, maybe, Silver grows a bit and things become healthier between him and Flint.
Listen, the moral of the story is this. I love all the ships in this show. I think they’re all neat, and i love the different iterations in which people bring them to life and try to align them with canon. Do i think that with the canon we’ve been given, silverflint could happen? Maybe. Would it be healthy?? I mean... Probably not 😅 but like, that doesn’t prevent me from shipping it. (That’s not the point of shipping - sometimes you just wanna see that sweet sweet chemistry pay off, even tho u know it ain’t healthy. The characters are fictional. It’s okay. No-one will get hurt - apart from maybe you if you end up romanticising it and taking that into real life but ooft that’s a whole other kettle of fish.) But god, that’s the fucking JOY of fanfics ya know?? It may also be why i enjoy writing my modern au so much xD therapy is an option, and canon means even less than usual. All im saying is, when it comes to the relation between silver and flint, the fan community are a fucking godsend. You want them to be friends?? We got fics for that! Want them to bone? SO many fics for that! Want a sort of father-son role?? Uhh nowhere near enough fics for that, but the fandom’s still active so you never know! Partners in crime?? Hell YEAH that has potential, even in canon i think if u just stretch out fan-written episodes far enough!! (God can you imagine the POTENTIAL?? Ignore the war, the grittiness, the drama. Get me some pirate hijinks where the stakes are low but they’re still sharing a braincell.)
(Hmm. Now i need to add another idea to my WIP list lmao xD)
Anywayyy, hope this satisfies ur curiosity anon!!

Writer’s Spotlight | Winterisakiller & Winterisakillerwrites
Another Writer’s Spotlight and this week I featuring @winterisakiller \ @winterisakillerwrites. This is actually one of the first fic writers I found on Tumblr and I feel honored to feature them today. She is the queen of angst and ripping my heart out. Yes I have “yelled” more than once “fix it now!” at them after reading one of their stories. They write killer OCs and are a genuinely great and supportive friend
The Basics
Any other names you want people to call you?
Cait
How long have you been writing fic?
Oh goodness, since I was 12...so fourteen years give or take.
What fandoms and/ships do you write?
Currently Tom Hiddleston RPF and in that fandom Tom and OFCs. I also used to be active in the AFI fandom writing mostly slash fic, with the occasional OFC throw in.
How did you get started writing fic?
I have always loved making up stories in my head. I started reading fic ages ago (Hanson fanfic to date myself) and found myself going....I can do this, so I did. My first fics are horribly embarrassing and thankfully aren't to be found anymore. But it was good practice and it gave my the excuse to put pen to paper so to speak.
Story Recommendations
Which of your stories are your favorite?
That is a tough question, its like asking me to chose my favorite child. But if I had to I guess I would say its a tie between my two multi-chapter stories, Love & Great Buildings and Get Better. I love L&GB because it was the first long fic I wrote on my own from start to finish in YEARS. And Tom and Rosie have come to mean so much to me, especially being my first foray into the Tom fandom. Get Better I love because it let me explore the Tom I had created in Brave Face and let him find the happy ending he felt he no longer deserved. Cath (the main OFC) was such a fun character to explore as well. Building their relationship was a challenge (mainly trying to get them to cooperate with me) and one I enjoyed immensely.
Which story are you most proud of?
Honestly, Imperfect Tense because it was such a painful and difficult story to write. And it makes the only story in which I absolutely could not stand the Tom I created. He is a selfish in it and a coward and it costs him everything in the end. He had so many chances to come clean and be honest and he ran from each and every one until the truth finally was revealed and by then it was far, far to late. I love the OFC in the story, Molly, because she sticks to her guns. She loves Tom, trusted him implicitly, and he broke that trust and no matter how much she loves him, there is no way she can forgive him. And she sticks by that, even when the circumstance she finds herself in would be so much easier with him actively involved. So long story short, I'm saying Imperfect Tense because it wasn't the story I wanted to tell but the one that it needed to be.
Which of your stories do you think is the most underrated?
That is another tough one. I think I am going to have to go with Becoming. For one its a general Tom fic, not an OFC or reader fic, which meant it definitely didn't get a great deal of traffic. For another it was a challenging fic, for me, because I had so many ideas about what I wanted to explore and narrowing it down to focus primarily on building the relationship between Tom and his son and how that impacted Tom as a person (the guilt, the confusion, and the desperate need to get this right).
Someone is new to reading your stories, which story/stories should they read first?
I guess I would say either the Last Minutes & Lost Evenings series (Tom and Rosie) or the Brave Face series. Though any of the one shots I've written are good jumping in points as they are mainly independent stories (unless otherwise marked).
Which Story did you do the most research for?
Honestly, Get Better (and in the same vein its prequel Brave Face). Get Better because it was sent in and around the London Betrayal run and I wanted to be as accurate as I could be. Brave Face because I did a LOT of looking into Tom's schedule at the time (2014-2016) as it played a very big role in the way I was writing Tom's character.
Which Story was the easiest to write?
Surprisingly, Brave Face...It almost seemed to write itself. I seriously blinked and somehow a 13,000 word story appeared. It never happened before and I seriously doubt it will ever happen again.
The Writing Process
What is your favorite part of writing?
When I get to that one part of a story...The one I can't wait to tell because its been sitting in my brain, begging to get out. And when I get it out exactly, if not better than, how I saw it in my head.
What is your least favorite part?
Editing is a bitch. So is trying to start something and not being able to get the words out the way they need to be. If that makes any sense.
Describe your style in 1 to 2 sentences.
Character driven and full of emotion. Mainly angst.
Who are some of your writing idols and/or influences?
Fanfic wise? I am in utter awe of @tilltheendwilliwrite. Everything she writes is amazing and beautiful and my god I want to be her when I grow up. I also adore WhittyOne (on AO3), her Pastiche series is stunning and heartbreaking and beautiful. The relationship between Tom and Michelle is one of my absolute favorite fictional relationships. The love and trust between them is something out of this world. Traditional writers, I really don't have any one I strive to be. I read a lot (though as of late its been more fanfic than anything) and will try just about anything as long as I am invested in the characters.
What programs do you use to write and/or edit?
I write and edit mainly using Word. Occasionally, I will fiddle around with Google Docs, but Word is my norm.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Probably more of a panster, though I have been trying my best to be more of a plotter (at least in the basic sense) so that I at least have a general direction to move in.
Do you write RPF or not?
Yes.
What do you think are your writing strengths?
I think my strength lies in my ability to capture emotion (both the way my characters express their emotions and the way they don't) and I think I'm fairly decent at dialogue.
What do you struggle with?
Detail and description. I am working at getting better at describing the world around my characters. Trying to make the world more technicolor and less black and white.
Favorite Trope?
I'm a sucker for unrequited love and mutual pining.
What is the best piece of writing advice you have heard?
Actually its funny that you ask, I was talking with @evieplease last night and she mentioned that the best way to catch any errors or to see if what you've written works, read it aloud. And honestly, I had never thought of it until that moment and my god it makes so much sense.
What would you say to a new fanfic writer starting out?
As dumb as it sounds, just start writing. If you have an idea, run with it. Explore and try new things.
What is a random bit of research you have not managed to work into a fic yet?
I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
What is your favorite random detail from one of your stories?
I have an entire relationship background plotted out for Tom and one of my OFCs that will never feature in the fic(s) they are in, but gives me such a better understanding of them as a couple.
Any goals or WIPs you want to share?
Right now I am in the middle of writing Chasing Marigolds which is an idea that sprung from a tumblr game I participated in back in September of last year. Basically people sent story titles and the game was to come up with a summary for the title you were given. @lettalady gave me Chasing Marigolds and I came up with a basic summary and a few days later, the overall plot of the story. Flash forward to about a week or so ago, when my brain decided I HAD to get the story out. I'm only one and a third chapters into the story as of now, but I am excited about it and I cannot wait to start sharing it.
This or That
Fluff AND Angst
Smut AND Fluff
Reader Insert or OC

Until next time peeps, toodles!

simply cannot believe i made a supernatural fic rec list in the year 2020 but here we are
When Worlds Collide
When Zachariah dies, the illusions he’s created die with him. But before they collapse completely, sometimes they collide. That’s how Castiel goes from cradling Dean Winchester’s broken body one moment, to finding himself face to face with Dean Smith in the next.
note: basically endverse!cas’s world collapses right after endverse!dean is killed by lucifer and he gets thrown into the it’s a terrible life verse. drama and love and a whole lot of fuckery ensue. it’s tagged as major character death but it’s not really
Broadway Musical
This is the day that marked the Holy and Blessed Union of Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle.
The merging of prominent bloodlines is always a grand occurrence, but breeding pedigree hunter families like Winchester and Harvelle is something to be rejoiced. It is also something to be meticulously planned, which thankfully the Host is very good at.
note: an AU where dean and jo are destined to fall in love and have two sons who will bring on the apocalypse and be the vessels for michael and lucifer. only problem is cupid’s arrows don’t make them fall in love with each other and heaven promptly starts freaking the fuck out so cas slips into a vessel and tries to do some matchmaking to get the whole end of the world thing back on track. it’s tagged as unrepentant crack and that pretty much sums it up, but it’s also a very funny and enjoyable read
a turn of the earth
Dean’s your typical half-orphaned, monster-killing 22-year-old until a trenchcoated stranger crashes into his back windshield one September night, claiming he’s an angel that knows him from the future and that he’s on the run.
Frigging fantastic.
note: listen i LOVE a good time travel fic
How (thanks to Gabriel) Dean and Castiel (accidentally) raised each other (and Sam)
In which, Gabriel meddles with the time line and Castiel becomes Dean's angel rather sooner than intended.
note: after lucifer stabs gabriel in hammer of the gods, gabriel uses his very last bit of grace to travel back to the beginning of time and decree castiel the angel of thursdays and dean winchester. fast forward a few eons and castiel hears mary’s dying cry. he shows up too late to save her, but he decides that a human life is very short in the grand scheme of things so he can play guardian angel to dean (and by extension sam) while also fulfilling his duties to heaven. not only is this pretty much my favorite supernatural fic, it’s also one of my favorite fics in general
The Shattered One
When it struck Castiel, he was in mid-flight. It dropped him out of the sky like a sparrow buffeted by gale-force winds. Castiel set down the first place he could find. He ended up standing in a field in Switzerland, swaying on his feet and staring down at his body, dazed by what it had just done.
note: okay so listen. this is tagged as mpreg but that’s kind of a stretch imo. it’s not like... mpreg mpreg in the sense that it deals with angel reproduction and has nothing to do with sex or pregnancy. angel reproduction goes like this: a section of an angel’s grace will suddenly and randomly break off and begin to grow on it’s own. after a certain period of time, another angel has to offer a piece of their grace and the two pieces will combine to form a new angel. that new angel is a fully developed, fully functional angel and is considered a new brother/sister instead of an offspring.
cas’s grace shatters which means he’s fucked because this takes place in season 5 after he’s defied heaven. no other angel will offer up a piece of their grace so his own is basically going to rip itself apart, killing him in the process. when dean and sam find out cas is going to die, dean offers up part of his soul in place of another angel’s grace. what results is a new angel that has just enough human in it that it takes the shape of a human baby and sends pretty much all of their lives into a tailspin.
ALSO just a heads up this is definitely more pre-destiel despite the relationship tag. there’s a sequel where im pretty sure they do get together but i haven’t read it so i cant’s say for sure.
Kiss You When It’s Dangerous
When his partner Uriel, betrays him, Federal Agent Castiel Novak is saved from becoming a ritual sacrifice by brothers Dean and Sam Winchester.
note: FBI!cas gets thrown headfirst into the supernatural. tagged as major character death, but again it’s not really
My Roots Take Flight
After forty years in Hell, Dean’s more than willing to accept the offer: become a guardian angel and earn his freedom. But his new ward seems destined to hunt alongside Sam, and there are secrets in Heaven that the angels don’t want found out. Dean’s going to have to choose between his duty and the people he loves- and to work out just where Castiel fits in.
note: season 4 au where dean is an angel and cas is a human except it’s way more complicated than that
Peace and Good Luck To All Men
Christmas in the Milton household was difficult enough without the added complication of guests- and if Luke and Gabriel placing bets on who can get with Sam first wasn’t bad enough, then Cas developing a ridiculous crush on his sister’s boyfriend definitely is.
note: the one where michael, lucifer luke, gabriel, anna and cas are all human siblings but michael and lucifer luke are still trying to kill each other, gabriel is still Like That and cas is still super into dean which is pretty inconvenient considering he’s with anna.
Asunder
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Matthew 19:6)
note: it’s been a very long time since i read this, but from what i remember it’s an AU where they’re all human and dean brings his friend/co-worker cas as his “date” to sam and ruby’s wedding for moral support. when sam was in college, he met ruby and they started using drugs together. after several failed attempts at helping him get clean, dean eventually cut sam off and it’s been years since they’ve spoken. even though sam and ruby are now both sober, dean blames ruby for everything that happened and the only reason he’s even going to the wedding is because bobby and ellen basically force him to. again, it’s been years and years since i read this so i can’t remember a lot of the details, but i do know that despite this being a dean/cas fic a lot of the focus is dean rebuilding his relationship with sam and that’s what i remember really liking about it.
Hanged, Drawn, and Quartered
Death brings Sam back — sort of.
note: a general fic involving only sam and dean. sam’s soul is so damaged from its time in the cage that when death brings it back, it shatters into pieces and so does sam. like literally. there’s four different sams now, each representing a distinctive part of his personality. sounds cracky but it’s actually surprisingly angsty and focuses on how the sams and dean are adjusting to their new reality and each other
Point Pleasant
(okay so this fic was deleted but i’m putting in on here anyway because the author has since turned it into a novel and had it published. im sure old pdfs of the fic are floating around but i highly recommend reading the novel version. if you know it was based on a destiel fic then it’s really easy to see those influences in the writing and the characters but it can stand up on it’s own. also!!!! it has pretty much the coolest take on the mothman’s origin story that i’ve ever heard.)
Ben Wisehart (Dean Winchester) grew up in the idyllic town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. An early encounter with the supernatural shaped his worldview and served as the catalyst for his career as a bestselling horror writer. Thirteen years after abandoning his home, Ben returns to the town to investigate the apparent reemergence of the terrifying creature responsible for his childhood nightmares. In Point Pleasant, Ben is confronted not only by the town’s resident monster, the Mothman, but also by his former best friend, Sheriff Nicholas Nolan (Cas Novak). Together, Ben and Nicholas (Dean and Cas) uncover the mystery of the monster in the woods and discover that the ghosts that haunt us are sometimes made of flesh and blood. And sometimes, they lead us home.
Sympathy for the Devil (and Dean Winchester)
this is not so much a rec as it is a request.
basically an au version of season 5 (and kind of the whole series really). when god cast lucifer out of heaven, he tore out his grace. lucifer’s grace was put into the cage, but lucifer himself fell to earth and spent thousands and thousands of years reincarnating as a human. his latest reincarnation? dean winchester. so when sam opens the cage, lucifer’s grace is released and dean realizes that he’s lucifer. part of him still kind of wants to start the apocalypse but the other part of him has a whole new appreciation for humanity considering he now remembers every human life he’s ever lived. it’s made more complicated by the fact that dean (/lucifer) doesn’t really want to tell anyone that he’s apparently the devil so he has to keep his now angel status on the dl and also because despite heaven wanting the apocalypse to start, michael went missing from heaven shortly after lucifer was cast out and no one has any idea where he’s at.
this fic was deleted, but if anyone happens to have a pdf copy let me know. i would be highly appreciative!
#listen i read a lot of spn fic back in the day so im probably leaving a lot off this list#but these are the ones that i remember years and years later#also i just realized these are basically all AUs lmao#destiel#destiel fic rec#supernatural#supernatural fic rec#spn#ficrec

fascinated by the distinction drawn between "audience member" and "fic writer" bc I think I know what you mean in regards to kind of re-writing it in your own head not as the secondary way of interacting with it but as the first. But I would not have thought of putting it that way!
A lot of it has to do with the specific fic genre I write in, which is long plotty AUs that I’ll probably be working on for years -- to some extent I can set aside everything in canon that occurs in in-universe chronology after the span of my story; Backbone and Crown doesn’t have to take into account the events of the OT and ST because they haven’t occurred yet. On the other hand, I can’t totally set aside major set piece events that involve causes and players outside of whatever characters and timeline I’m working with, because depending what I’m working with things are still going to happen whether or not my characters are involved.
And I make compromises all the time about whether things are going to make it into the story -- there’s a whole discarded Backbone subplot about Zare Leonis that I considered really carefully before not including, even with the knowledge that leaving him and his interaction with Ezra out of the story meant that his arc in the Servants of the Empire novels will be completely changed. Backbone covers about half the span of S1, maybe less; I was always running out the timeline of S1 to figure out what events would be happening that would or would or not be affected by the Ghosts’ changed circumstances and if that merited being included in the story. Rebels S1 is very small-scale; going further into the timeline of the show means that opens up further and further and a lot of other factors are in play. The earliest version of Backbone was also quite different; the Free Ryloth fleet didn’t exist, Cham and Alecto were members of the Rebel Alliance, a number of other Rebel Alliance characters were there; I reworked it after Siege came out and it was revealed that the Rebel Alliance wasn’t yet a thing.
With Gambit, otoh, there were a lot of galactic-scale repercussions; I was always running the timeline back and forth and figuring out what the originating events were and how those would play out in the altered timeline of this single-point divergence AU. But the crucial difference is that for Gambit (and Wake), I was working is that I was working with a closed canon -- I didn’t have to worry about something down the line adding something to the in-universe chronology, and a lot of it was heavily altered by the divergence point anyway. (Actually, that canon reopened partway through Wake when The Lost Missions dropped in a way that was relevant; the chip scenes were somewhat shoehorned in because I couldn’t leave that out.) Crown is working in a tighter timeline but one that comes a lot closer to the set piece events of the saga; I have “where is this in relation to Rogue One?” running through my head when I’m working through any of the Rebel Alliance scenes. There are a number of small-scale changes that aren’t immediately clear (because the story’s not finished) that have come about because of the story’s divergence point that would have a much greater influence on galactic events than they did in canon.
When it comes to out-of-universe chronology, the added canon that comes out after I’ve already started working on a story, it can be a lot harder to deal with. 95% of the time, if the additional canon deals with the character/setting of my WIP, I’m going to ignore the bulk of it but occasionally integrate details here and there as relevant (such as the name of the Tann Province in Backbone -- you may note it doesn’t show up until quite late in the story, after the S3 ep aired). I didn’t change the names of the Inquisitors -- in fact, I made the decision early on that however I named the Inquisitors it would be different from what canon did, as that was prior to them being called “Seventh Sister”, “Fifth Brother,” etc. 5% of the time it’s something that I cannot ignore, like the clones and the chips -- that’s pretty rare, tbh, but it happens. (I’ve scrapped a story because of additional canon; I had a chunk of Kanan/Hera time travel written where they both got thrown back to the Clone Wars, but the Kanan - The Last Padawan comic coming out threw me too badly with their clones as opposed to my OCs.) To some extent, I try to only work with the canon that was available when I started writing that story; that’s not entirely sustainable with canon coming out so rapidly, and sometimes it can throw out a reader.
The worst part, as a fic writer, about dealing with additional canon isn’t trying to integrate it into an ongoing story: it’s that it may change how I feel about Star Wars, or if it’s done poorly, I may end up in the kind of mental place where I get very “why am I doing this when the canon doesn’t even care.” There’s a scene in the Darth Vader comics where the Inquisitors are doing shots after killing a Jedi and stealing his baby. When that particular issue came out, I was working on the big Inquisitors vs. Kanan & Ahsoka fight scene in Backbone, and I was so badly thrown by the disconnect that I had to step away for a few days. I hated the Rebels finale so much that I couldn’t work on Backbone for a while even though it’a completely different universe. A lot of what canon did with Ahsoka post-S2, and the way she gets idolized by both fandom and the PTB, has messed with my perception of her so much that with Crown Ahsoka and the backend of Backbone Ahsoka I didn’t trust myself writing her and had to have multiple beta readers just for her characterization, something I have never worried about before. (This is one reason I did that deep dive the other week to figure out what the hell was going on in the writers room about her, and honestly? I feel better about it now that I’ve rationalized what was going on in a way that makes sense to me.) I had to stop reading the Doctor Aphra comics because Hera was so out of character there that I was getting really, really upset (and also the animal harm), and then I just stopped reading all the SW comics because they were making me mad and I wasn’t enjoying myself. Sometimes you get big universe consequences stuff that doesn’t deal with your main characters (looking at you, TROS) and it’s frustrating if you don’t like it! Then I have to sit down and try to decide “hey, am I going to use any of this Palpatine stuff?” -- this was actually a problem for Crown, because the Palpatine scenes weren’t written yet when TROS came out, and I was so badly thrown by TROS that I didn’t know how to deal with that in Crown even though it’s mostly not relevant. Would I be happiest if I was working in a closed canon, or if at least I knew (or thought) my main characters weren’t going to get any more canon stories about them? GODS, YES, THIS IS WHY I STARTED WRITING PREQUEL FIC BACK IN THE LATE 2000S. (Ironically, I started writing PT fic before TCW came out, then flipped fandoms and came back in 2012 -- but all my 2012 PT fic only used the closed canon of the EU Clone Wars/Republic comics, not TCW.)
Mostly as an audience member I don’t want to see my writing characters on the screen anymore -- there’s a certain amount of hypervigilance that comes with having your writing characters or settings active in canon, even if you don’t intend to integrate any of that. I watch and read Star Wars very differently than I watch and read anything else; I mostly don’t find it relaxing because I’m always aware of the fact that the stuff I care about could pop up at any moment, or because I’m concentrating so hard on characterization/nuance/worldbuilding that my brain is going 150 mph, or because I have very specific deal-breakers. (I do find reading in the EU relaxing because bro, that is CLOSED CANON.) I would like to relax! If canon finally contorts itself to the point I can relax again that will be a relief, tbh, even as frustrating as it would also be.
...this is probably a much longer response than you expected.
#also I could probably clean this up but I need to go!#I got distracted writing it!#eri-223#bedlam answers

Author Interview Tag
I was tagged by @iris-best-taken-in-small-doses, thank you for tagging me! <3
Name: Vee
Fandoms: Primarily Sherlock BBC, but also RDJ Holmes, Harry Potter, and the Fallout games universe, plus Supernatural and bits of Doctor Who which I’ve seen and liked
Where you post: Ao3, I love this site
Most popular multi-chapter fic: So far it’s my first ever published fic from earlier of this godforsaken year, Harry Potter and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which has just a few days ago surpassed 2k hits. It’s a crossover between HP/SH, and I must admit I do neglect it a little because I have a second fic I publish, which brings us to....
Favourite story you’ve written till date: Definitely Reichenbach Falls. I speed-wrote the first 8-and-a-bit episodes over the course of 2 months while also studying for transfer exams, and I keep my pace up and it is my main focus at the moment. It’s also the most ambitious crossover I’m attempting, because it is the Holy Trinity of SuperWhoLock, and a Gravity Falls AU, so it offers a lot of lore I am proud that I came up with. It has its own challenges I like to tackle, especially when it comes to intertwining characters from numerous TV shows to coherently worked together, plus their character arcs and character developments that are to come. I hide easter eggs here and there and put some of my soul into it, so it is very dear to me. I think I am doing the job adequately so far, but time will tell. :) I do love HPatAoSH, because it is my first fic ever and I am still excited about it, but I put it on the backburner and procrastinate on the chapters I post usually
Fic you were nervous to post: Both my big series, really. One never knows what reception they’re going to get, and we all hope to get the characters to interact just right. The HP crossover because it has two timelines that later intertwine in 1997 when the Golden Trio asks the Baker Street Dumbass Detective Duo for help and I need to make certain corrections in some earlier chapters. Reichenbach Falls because it is SuperWhoLock and as I said, it’s huge, 3 parts in 1 work, so 300 chapters give or take in total, and I hope to do my best with everyone’s characterisation.
How you choose your titles: Depends. HP/SH was a bit self-explanatory, and I think it fits well into the AU and foretells what’s up in a sense that you know who is involved and if you know both fandoms, you get a whiff of a couple shenanigans. Reichenbach Falls was a bit difficult to name and I stalled on it, but then on one hot summer day that I spent cowering inside the house like the pale gremlin I am, I thought hm,,,,, the show is called Gravity Falls, but I can’t use that of course. And then I remembered that Reichenbach is a thing, the waterfall is in canon as well and BAM - Reichenbach Falls. It’s all more about a sudden epiphany than hard thinking, it comes by itself.
Do you outline: Yes, but do I stick to it? Nah. I do write steps for each episode for RF, but those serve only as a mild reminder of what the end goal is, and I wing the rest to my standard. It works well so far. With HP/SH, I just wing it and rely on the past chapters because as I mentioned, I’m a sorrowful procrastinator on this one for now. My outlines are general which gives me space to improvise and improve on the run, which I like, it doesn’t restrict me in any self-induced way, so I prevent mental blocks nicely.
Complete: Living Musical, which is a one-shot I wrote for Steph from inevitably-johnlocked. Fluffy, too! And it needs revision because I wrote it in 4 hours until it was 1am and I have no recollection of that evening anymore. And... god, I need to fix the typos. *facepalms*
In Progress: HP/SH crossover and Reichenbach Falls I linked above already. They’re plenty to take care of :D
Coming soon/not yet started: this is what I am excited about! I have a new AU in mind, either some postapocalyptic wasteland AU, but most probably also an AU of the game Fallout: New Vegas at the same time (it’s basically the same concept). I have the basic plot in mind and down, and ohhhhh guysssss I really like it. I’d also like to make it an interactive fic where the readers may choose which factions John and Sherlock could join, which would affect the ending of the fic, much like what happens in the game, but I’m not decided on this. But there is great potential, I think, though I need to make a big mindmap and brainstorm all that would need to be involved, so there’s lots of lore to consider (which I already got started on). It would be another huge fic, and I plan to write at least half of all that could be published before sending it to ao3, possibly. We will see, but you can see how my mind is overworking itself already... >:) it looks quite badass (but that’s just me so far), and its working name is Fallout: New London. Actually, there’s a prologue and first two chapters that are constant (meaning that it is firmly locked to the AU and can’t be influenced by choices) and in progress already and semi-drafted because I am a psycho like that, but no details yet! I have no self-control.. but yeah, this is the biggest one I’m excited about out of all the fics my mind invents.
Do you accept prompts: ehhhh, maybehaps? I don’t know. Probably not at the moment, maybe in a year or so. I like the idea of doing Christmas prompts, so maybe in 300 days approximately, who knows?
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: Currently, it stays on Reichenbach Falls and its 2 later seasons, because that’s when things get real >:)) also Fallout: New London. so much johnlock in sight.
Upcoming story you are most excited about: Due to my lack of time at the present moment, I nowadays mostly revisit some comfort fics if I feel like shit, but I do keep my eye out on @iris-best-taken-in-small-doses‘ The Corvus That Calls at Night. I am subscribed to the ao3 profile so once it an email popped up and I saw ‘medieval’ and all the other priceless tags (pls check them out I love them) I went oo >:D I am merely waiting for my holiday spirit to kick in fully so I can put my feet up and catch up to my reading; there’s also @simplyclockwork‘s Hired Gun I keep my eyes on, and I patiently wait for @jbaillier‘s Messages From Deep Waters -- I remember that back in August(?) she posted a post about doing research on sea fish and how to gut them? Not sure on the English word or if I’m correct at all right now, but hmmm Scotland staged AU, I like that. Also her You Go To My Head stories that are coming, I love them dearly, and I am so excited there’s going to be more Medical Husbands content :’)

mdzs read diary part IV, the end
It’s inspiring how much self care wwx is gonna finally get now that his husband will go along with whatever he does, so he’s gotta look out for lwj’s well being if not his own. that is emphatically the STUFF
dragging my hands down I face as I read this, after all these chapters of getting up close and personal with ghouls bleeding from every orifice, slaying ancient beasts, rebelling against the entire cultivation world, the two of them are absolutely paralyzed by middle school crush sleepover math
chicken
he actually drew kissy doodles .... he....
IDK I THINK I JUST DOCUMENTED THIS PART CUZ I WAS STILL SCREAMING you cant expect me to have very useful things to say at this point
this is torture you are both so mushy you are so GONE
This part really stood out to me, it’s an attitude I feel like wwx implies with his inner narration a few times but most clearly says here: he’s not one for allowing himself to exaggerate how bad his circumstances are/could be even a little bit - he’s already lived through some extreme low points and found a way to keep going, so he never makes sweeping statements about what he couldn’t live without (Inner JingYi: you’re supposed to say you’d be lost without him here!!!) Instead he seems to accept as a given that being alive doesn’t guarantee him any pleasantness or joy at all, and as a result his feelings toward being in TRUE LOVE are surprisingly pragmatic, but also colored with such gratitude. There are a lot of things in the novel that struck me, like this, as being just a little to the left of familiar tropes/sentiments, and were more touching for it. Whether it be the influence of culture difference as opposed to what I’m used to reading in most western romance stories, or MXTX’s unique outlook, or a combination of both, it was really refreshing and made me pause over it. Not “I can’t imagine living without you” but “I could be living without you, but instead I get to be with you and I think that’s the best thing that could happen.”
ADJFDKFJ THE UST BEING SO STRONG THAT EVEN THE VILLAIN COMMENTS ON IT IN THE MIDDLE OF EXECUTING HIS EVIL PLANS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT WILL NEVER FAIL TO MAKE ME LAUGH MY ASS OFF. hes like god damn! here I thought I had problems
it was at this moment that I realized we were doing this Now... I’m still recovering. What a scene. I am so glad I saw the most incredible fanart soon afterwards, bc the fact that someone has already drawn a perfect comic of this part means I don’t have to
I love you so much, you are so annoying, you are perfect... I like how he’s been experiencing openly requited love for all of ten minutes but he’s already figured out how to weaponize it to piss people off
doing!!! his!!! job!!!!!
ahh... it’s a really good story. JGY is a great character. One of the most interesting differences for me between drama watching vs. novel reading experience is that without an actor to bat his vulnerable doe eyes at you and smile faintly with his cute dimples, the book does not go much out of its way to try to lull the reader into a false sense of security around him or *endear* him to you the way the show does. But just by seeing events through wei wuxian’s POV, its still enough to evoke pity or understanding towards him. The overall impression is a bit more detached though, there’s less emphasis on the spectacle of how he could manipulate everyone closest to him and more of a general feeling of resigned tragedy that everyones the worst on this bitch of an earth.
I CANNOT DEAL WITH YOU FOR EVEN ONE MORE SECOND!!!!
I clearly paused to take note of less and less parts at the end & the extras due to: a) too excited to reach the end b) too spicy to photograph and c) too sleepy cuz I kept reading in the middle of the night. but I absolutely took the time for Bro We Are Teens appreciation corner:
I’d absolutely read 40 more extra chapters of their monster-of-the-week field trip antics.
god... poor Jin Ling now basically has to deal with divorced parents that talk shit about each other to him whenever he is saying with one of them. except they are both his uncles. just a disasterhood of all uncles from start to finish. AUUUGH wei wuxian and jiang cheng have fucked me up completely, I dream of them reconciling but I also REFUSE to believe it would ever be easy. let me know if theres a fanfic that absolutely tortures you for decades before they hug
HAHAHA oh no this man ain’t making it to immortality thats for damn sure. HE’S JUST GONNA TRY AS HARD AS HE CAN HIS WHOLE LIFE NOT TO LOOK AT HIM BUT THEYRE *MARRIED* SDLKFJSF ohhhh it’s too funny, like... the mundane domestic family drama IN the fantastical swords and sorcery setting is what really ratchets up these things from amusing to fucking hilarious I think
aaaa the end... final random thoughts? No not final, I would like to please keep discussing at length and exhaustively, all the time please - CQL has gotta be one of the best TV adaptations I’ve seen. ANY adaptation of anything would be lucky to be so good!! reading the novel has just made me appreciate it even more.
- I don’t think I can do justice to what I find most fascinating about comparing the two versions briefly, to do that I need to get drunk and ramble at my friends for hours but... the condensed version is something like this. Really all the significant differences between the two versions (besides the ones which can be attributed to censorship and therefore aren’t worth discussing) are a side effect of the structure of how the story is told - there’s barely anything changed arbitrarily. Aside from having a cold opening, the drama sticks to a very linear version of the story, and I think for a TV show or film, that’s probably the best way to do it. We see everything, we get shocked and tricked and betrayed and surprised along with the characters, we feel the biggest impact at the climactic scenes having experienced all the build-up. The novel on the other hand is not only much more non-linear in WHEN we learn bits and pieces of information, but that information is also obfuscated under wei wuxian’s multiple layers of Unreliable Narratoritis, which are as follows: 1) difficulty remembering things because of personality/avoiding painful memories/actual memory loss, 2) No Homo Goggles still on, and 3) a wry sense of humor that makes the reader unsure of how much they can trust his attitude toward things, especially near the beginning. The experience of reading is a puzzle the reader has to mentally piece together through all of the above listed camouflage, and the puzzle itself is a three-sided mystery: One - How Bad of a guy was Wei WuXian really, and how exactly did all the bad stuff in his life go down; Two - wangxian epic pride & prejudice gambits; Three - political murder mystery. (I love stories like this btw... though I fully admit I’m glad I watched first this time bc it might have taken me a long time to tackle otherwise.) Because of this, where the drama wants to pull you in and submerge you in all the most potent emotional parts, the novel in direct contrast deliberately side-steps around these things and asks that you hurt yourself by filling in the blanks. In fact the more intense emotions and painful memories involved, whether it be his relationship with jiang yanli, his DEATH, the darkest days of war times etc, the more the novel evasively withholds details. I actually really like both styles of storytelling but each one is obviously way better suited to its medium. ANYWAY.... THATS BASICALLY WHERE MY BRAINS AT WHILE IM READING GAY SWORD WIZARD BOOKS
- The extras are so saturated with domestic married bliss that it’s a good thing I stopped taking pictures because I’d just take a picture of every page. this is too much for me to take... I did jump the gun a few times and read a few fanfics while I was still mid-read of the book (I tried to hold out but alas I am mortal) and at one point after finishing I was like “wow what fic was it in where lwj says something cute and wwx kisses him in public but they’re in the corner of the restaurant so no one really sees... OH NO WAIT that was actually in there.” and ... and that’s the LEAST OF IT... *stares into the distance* theyre married wow
- I ofc couldn’t help but see a few vague blogs beforehand so honestly I was braced for something like, wildly ooc for the sake of porn to happen in the extras... I definitely appreciate how the incense burner porn interludes could be uhhh a lot for many people and not my personal cup of tea in terms of smut however [here follows the words of a poisonous frog who has dwelt her whole life in the rainforests of BL] the concept is also surprisingly SWEET SDFLKJF like wwx sees lan wangji’s darkest mixed-up violent teenage fantasies and he’s just like aww babe you had a crush on me!! just... good for them
- I swear I’m not gonna rehash every cute married thing they do but wei wuxian grading papers in the tub........................rEALLY GOT ME
- I want to Draw - ok thats enough if I keep going I’ll just write “wei wuxian grading papers in the tub” seven more times probably

So.. Er, haven’t read much of anything but my own stuff on AO3, trying to get back into writing because everything sucks rn. It’s Good Omens with a dash of Discworld all the way down, below the cut.
In The Garden; pre-fall, pre-canon fic of them in the Garden of Eden.
BEFORE THE BEGINNING...
…Was darkness. That’s what happens when the sun isn’t up, and as it was almost the middle of the night —the first night, leading into the first day in the Garden of Eden— darkness was only to be expected.
The Great Plan was being set in motion. The countdown to start the countdown to the end of the world had begun. Things were getting down to the wire and the Heavens were in a tizzy to make sure everything went off without a hitch during the official launch.
Down in the Garden of Eden, all was peaceful. This was also to be expected. The only living beings in the entire Garden were two corporeal but unconscious angels reposing among the roots of the Tree. They’d been held in stasis since their incorporation a number of days earlier and weren’t due to wake until things were officially under way. Ostensibly this was to allow them to acclimate to corporeality, but in reality it was to keep them out of everyone’s metaphorical hair.
Of course, even the best laid plans never do go quite as planned, do they?
There was no Heavenly fanfare heralding the occasion, no Celestial sign except the eternal march of the stars across the sky, nothing at all to indicate that something was being set into motion as midnight of the day in question rolled around.
But down in their resting spots, the angels awoke.
Serpents And Ladders; what happens after the end of In The Garden.
After the fall of the Garden, for the first time that any could remember, change came rapidly to Heaven in the form of the instant adoption of corporeal forms amongst most of the archangels, much to the bafflement of some of the oldest Celestials who were gently prodded to a quiet retirement out among the stars. Heaven itself shifted to accommodate their altered forms, which forced the rest of the Celestials and the Elementals who did most of the day to day operations to adopt similar seemings.
Of course, Aziraphale and Crawly knew why it caught on, not that anyone ever thought to ask them. The reasoning was simple enough, if multi-faceted. Firstly, corporeality is a surprisingly potent antidote to knurd[1], with built in buffers against the harshness of reality. Really no surprise that it was popular.
Secondly, Celestial beings come in a great many shapes and sizes and types and having them all conform to one generally accepted shape was much more convenient, especially when it came to paperwork. (No one knew where paperwork had come from, since paper was technically not a thing yet, but there you go. It’s ineffable.)
Thirdly, with the increasing tensions between certain factions within the Host, having your firmament safely ensconced inside of flesh and bone made it that much harder to be spied on, making secrets that much easier to keep, especially once they discovered how to hide their wings.
And last but not least, though it took Aziraphale and Crawly a long while to fully comprehend the ramifications of it, it was because the humans began to believe, in great enough numbers, that that was how Heaven and the Host looked.
1. Being knurd is to be unintoxicated to such an extent that all comfort stories are stripped away from the mind. This makes you see the world in a way 'nobody ever should', in all its harsh reality.
Ask Not For Whom The Bell Tolls (It Tolls For They); the church in ‘41 and what happens, and doesn’t happen, after. (total tearjerker)
Crowley ran, ran and ran, heart pounding, almost blind with panic, hissing with pain as their foot hit the edge of consecrated ground, but it didn’t matter, because they were in time and like a snake shedding their skin the panic slipped away as they yanked open the door and hot-footed their way into the church under the confused eyes of a trio of nazis and an angel moments away from a fate worse than death.
A church, for fuck’s sake? Can’t the angel see it’s a setup? A trap? Dealing with nazis on holy ground, giving them holy books, even if it’s supposed to be a double-cross, a double double-cross. “Sorry, consecrated ground. Ugh, like being on the beach in bare feet.” Crowley fervently kept that thought in mind, because in reality, it was far far worse than that. Crowley was very good at imagining not being on fire, and that belief was all that was keeping them from falling to ash inside that church.
Aziraphale continued to stare at Crowley in shock, for a moment wondering if they were actually hallucinating the way humans could during moments of high stress. Because consecrated ground discorporates demons, and yet. And yet, Crowley was somehow really here. Why the he heaven is Crowley here? “What are you doing here?” Aziraphale hissed, the nazis and the gun momentarily forgotten.
“Stopping you from getting in trouble,” Crowley hissed back, dancing from foot to foot just an arm’s length away from Aziraphale. Play it cool, play it cool, play it cool, if you panic you’re both done for.
Stacking The Deck;
Harriet wanted to be asleep. She’d just had a baby a few hours earlier, and all she really wanted was sleep. They had given her something for the pain, but it didn’t stop her having to use the restroom, which was NOT FUN right now, and it took a while for things to settle back down and she just. wanted. sleep.
What she got, was voices.
A few she recognized, distant and muzzy, as the nuns who’d helped deliver the baby. There was also the one not-nun who’d shuffled in during the chaos, wrinkly as an old apple with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, who had actually delivered the baby before quickly shuffling back out again. The nuns had treated her with deep respect, whispering to each other about ‘a touch of the Old Adam’ she carried about her.
There was now a lot more raucous laughter coming from down the hallway, and some singing of what were definitely not religious hymns. Mingled in were the voices of men, which some deep part of her brain realized were from her supposed security detail, who’d abandoned her the minute the live feed with her husband had ended.
But under those voices was another voice, one that she’d learned to listen to when it whispered a little too loudly to ignore. And it was telling her to check on the baby, to check on Warlock. Right Now.
With a muffled groan Harriet slid her legs over the side of the bed and eased herself to her feet. With the dimmed lights and muddled by whatever they had given her, it took her a moment to realize that the bassinet wasn’t there. No Warlock. And no guards. And no nuns.
The coolness of the linoleum felt good against the bottoms of her feet and she shuffled dreamily out of the room into the empty hallway, too well medicated to feel panic, but the little voice was getting louder. And it was talking with an odd accent, which was weird. And it was calling her by her full name now, which was even more unusual. Find your baby, Harriet Sibyl Dowling. Find him now or lose him forever.
Nature vs Nurture; raising the antichrist
After the handshake, Crowley left in a hurry to set some of their plans into motion, with promises of talking soon and a casual ciao tossed over their shoulder before slipping out of the shop and roaring off down the road. What Aziraphale didn’t see was the demon pulled over a few blocks later, pressing their forehead against the steering wheel of the Bentley and letting out a shuddering sigh of relief that the angel had finally, finally, agreed to help them save the world. And wondered, briefly, if God hadn’t been right to kick Crowley out, because how much of a right proper bastard did you have to be to knowingly ask your best friend to do the most dangerous thing they could ever possibly do?
Aziraphale’s first course of action was to make sure the shop door was locked before retreating into the back room to think, away from the demon’s so very temping influence. It didn’t take the angel long to convince themself that it had to be the right thing to do, because otherwise it wouldn’t be hell starting the war, but heaven, and surely heaven didn’t want a war. Once that was settled, Aziraphale began to really set their mind to finding the solutions to the multitude of problems their scheme would surely entail. The second course of action was to retrieve the ancient tome of magic they kept safely secured in a secret room on the second floor of the shop and settling it reverently on to the desk to start their research.
Setting Things To Rights; Adam Young gets a visit from Agnes Nutter after the world doesn’t end.
“Come back. Please.”
Adam stared down at his best friends in the whole universe, sure his heart was breaking as they turned and ran away. He knew then he’d messed up bad, maybe beyond fixing. He tried to call them back, to beg even, but no sound would come and he closed his eyes against the sting of tears. Come back! Please! he wanted to say, pressing his hands to his tear-dampened face. I’m sorry!
You don’t need them. You can have new friends. Better friends. All you have to do is show us the way.
A low growl and a familiar waft of doggy breath as a wet tongue lapped at his cheek had Adam opening his eyes, and he hugged Dog tightly in relief. “Oh Dog! I’m so glad you’re here,” he whispered hoarsely, smiling when Dog licked him again. “I am sorry, you know that, don’t you?”
Dog whined and licked him again in answer.
“Thanks boy.” Adam let out a much heavier sigh and rubbed at his eyes when tears threatened again. The dream had been so real, too real, more memory than dream, and frightening in ways he didn’t want to think about. It hurt, knowing he’d hurt his friends so bad they’d stopped being his friends. And even though they’d forgiven him in the end, would they ever really trust him again? Especially when he could still do what he’d done? Would he trust someone who had done that to him?
In the silence there were two faint but distinct knocks that Adam heard clear as a bell. Dog’s ears perked up and Adam blinked and they both looked around the room for a source of the noise. There wasn’t much light but it was more than enough to show that nothing was out of place.
Still, Adam found himself saying, “Who’s there?”
A faint glimmering form stepped through the door. It was an old woman, dressed in really old clothes. “I have waited a long while for this meeting, Adam Young.” She bowed at him, a faint smile on her lips. “I be Agnes Nutter, witch. And ghost.”
Ineffable Bastards; the one I’m stuck on. :/
Groaning brakes pulled Crowley from their thoughts and they led Aziraphale off the bus, waiting until it had pulled away to turn towards their building. There was a sharp twinge in their stomach when they looked to the empty spot where the Bentley was usually parked. They felt another twinge when they looked at Aziraphale, who was staring up at the building with a distant blankness of expression that Crowley understood all too well. “C’mon, angel, I think we could both use a drink.”
No sound came at first, but Aziraphale managed to croak out, “Yes,” after a moment. They felt strangely distant from their feelings in the odd silence and they trailed behind the demon into the flat, which was both nothing like and exactly like what Aziraphale would expect from Crowley. The art got a few blinks but there was no energy to consider what they might mean after the day week decade they’d had.
Unlike the bare concrete walls in the other rooms, the kitchen was slick with creamy white marble and terrazzo tiles, ebony cabinets that gleamed and stainless steel appliances that had never been used or even plugged in, though they were well stocked with food and drink. Crowley grabbed a bottle at random and a couple of glasses, bringing them over to the chrome and glass table with a small collection of colorful orchids in the center. “Salute.”
The angel lifted their glass to toast before downing the drink and holding it out for a refill. Crowley obliged and they sat in silence for a while before Aziraphale asked, “Now what?”
“Eh, now I fall down and sleep for a while and you…” Crowley pulled off their glasses and gave the angel a long look. “You don’t really sleep do you? You should try it, great for getting away from your thoughts.”
“Rarely. Doesn’t seem to work that way for me, I’m afraid.” Aziraphale sighed and shook their head. “I just keep thinking about Agnes’ prophecy. Face the fire.” They shuddered a little. “You know what that means, don’t you?”
Rubbing at their tired eyes, and the sting of unsheddable tears, Crowley nodded. “You’re in big trouble, angel.”
“You know full well we’re both, as they say, in for it,” Aziraphale corrected, smiling a little when Crowley gave them a look. “I’ve toed the line for a long time, but you, my dear, have danced around it to the point that I’m not sure they even know where they drew the line to begin with. If Heaven is going to ‘fire’ me, what’s Hell going to do to you?” Saying it aloud had tears burning in their eyes and they wiped at them hastily.
Wilde Card; my take on why Aziraphale had a set of Oscar Wilde’s works.
“Aziraphale?”
“Hmm?”
Crowley tried to find a subtle way to ask, but curiosity had been eating at them to the point of distraction since the former angel had let slip that humans could have preternatural ancestry. “When you said, you’d never… with a human.”
Aziraphale gave them a confused look that melted into amused understanding when they realized Crowley was blushing. “My dear, are you asking me about my experiences?”
“Uh… Just, I seem to recall you mentioning a lot of gentleman’s clubs...” Crowley let their head drop back against the couch and covered their face when Aziraphale chuckled. “Ugh, angel!”
“I won’t judge you, you know,” Aziraphale murmured, smiling tenderly when Crowley looked at them. “If you, uh, found human companionship-”
“No! Ugh, no, it’d be like… no, I can’t help but think of them as children,” Crowley admitted. “Even Nanny Ogg, which tells you something about me I suppose,” they said, making Aziraphale laugh.
“I am in complete agreement with that sentiment,” said Aziraphale. “And it wasn’t just gentleman's clubs I frequented, there were quite a few for women if you knew where to look and who to talk to. You do know a lot more went on in the clubs than just sexual intercourse, don’t you?”
“Yeah, yeah, I should’ve known better, just, uh...” Crowley reached over and took Aziraphale’s hand. “There must have been quite a few poor smitten fools vying for your attention.”
Apple Of My Eye; complete fluff I wrote because of a pic I saw on tumblr
Crowley looked up from their mobile, barely able to contain their grin. “Hey, angel-”
“No.” Aziraphale didn’t even have to look up from the book they were reading to know the former demon was up to no good.
“I haven’t even said anything yet!” Crowley protested, still grinning at seeing the amusement crinkling around the reformed angel's eyes.
Aziraphale looked over at them with a feigned put-upon sigh. One look at Crowley’s grin had them asking, “Oh somebody, do I even want to know?”
If anything, that only made Crowley’s grin grow. “So I’m thinking maybe it’s time I branch out, try some different styles of shades. Whaddya think?”
Aziraphale spluttered into startled laughter when Crowley turned the mobile around, revealing a pair of spectacles where the rose tinted lenses had been shaped into breasts. “Why in the world-”
“Ain’t humans grand?” Crowley said, grinning down at the picture before sliding a sly look at Aziraphale and raising a hand, fingers poised to snap. “I could just…”
“You would too, wouldn’t you,” Aziraphale said with a shake of their head, pretending to go back to reading but watching Crowley sidelong. “Well I would rather you didn’t but I can’t stop you from going around looking, looking like a right proper tit if you want to,” they said with feigned primness, barely hiding their smile when Crowley laughed. “I wouldn’t want you to make a spectacle of yourself.”
“Alright angel, alright, you’ve convinced me. Wouldn’t want to put you off being seen with me.” It was a joke, mostly, and Crowley was still grinning as they said it, but inwardly that age old doubt still lingered.
Aziraphale knew it was there of course, having many of the same insidious worries about their new togetherness, and gave them a fond smile. “I assure you my dear, that having adored you in spite of that dreadful hairstyle you had in Paris, I would barely blink to see you in a pair of breastacles.”
Crowley blushed at the mention of adoration, sneered at mention of the hair and burst into raucous laughter at the name. “Only you’d think up a proper sounding name for it. Breastacles. Brilliant.” They darted in and grinningly kissed them. “And here I thought you’d appreciate me seeing the world through rose-titted glasses. But, as you wish.”
Aziraphale laughed and beamed at the phrase, taking their hand and lacing their fingers together. “Thank you, dearest. For everything. And especially for sparing everyone that.”

Q: Why the Mad Max Fandom?
A: I was actually quite fixated on Fury Road after watching it on DVD. I didn’t expect to particularly like it - I’d never seen the previous Mad Max movies (I finally have!) - but I was transfixed. And I didn’t particularly ship Furiosa and Max until the haemothorax/transfusion scene (although then I very much did). There were just so many layers of detail and backstory there waiting to be explored, because so little was actually said or explained. It’s like a neutron star of fic-fodder. And I didn’t discover ao3 til summer 2016 so I spent a full year wandering around like a lost soul. So, yeah. Quite a huge deal for me really.
Q: What do you think are some defining aspects of your work? Do you have a style? Recurrent themes?
A: Music. Minor characters looking on and commenting on the protagonists (big fan of Thomas Hardy’s more comedic efforts, where this happens a lot). Reasonably happy endings.
Q: Which of your works was the most fun to create? The most difficult? Which is your most popular? Most successful? Your favourite overall?
A: Maybe the small town modern AU (Ordinary People), because it was a nice change from the Wasteland setting. I’m not very Wasteland-minded at all. But the Bladerunner AU (Do Androids Dream etc) and the new Firefly AU are lots of fun because the two sets of movie worlds mesh together way better than I’d expected.
The most difficult? - My Wasteland headcanon stuff. It’s too fluffy and not remotely violent which doesn’t really ring true. I’m very aware that my Furiosa is hardly ever violent, or my Max particularly mad. But that’s the great thing about fanfiction - the infinite versions of characters and scenarios. Surprisingly the Blues Brothers AU is quite tricky. I can’t quite make Jake Blues and Furiosa the same person. But it’s an excuse to listen to great tunes. And Jessie will make a comeback in that one though (she’s not dead, I should make that clear).
On the old kudos-to-hits ratio, the Firefly AU is taking off surprisingly well, but it’s quite smut-focused so that might well account for it ;) early days yet. Bladerunner AU is doing well for a multi-chapter. Up Around The Bend (an oldie, the escape from the Citadel) is hanging in there.
Most successful? I’m happy enough with all of them, except maybe I Kissed A Girl. Please don’t read that. Favourite overall - It’s a toss-up between Ordinary People (a chance to explore my headcanon in a modern small town setting) and the Bladerunner AU (it makes me weep).
Q: How do you like your wasteland? Gritty? Hopeful? Campy? Soft? Why?
A: Hopeful and silly and everyone has access to a record player somehow. This is why I stick to writing AUs these days. But I’ll happily read all of the above!!! And entirely intend to!
Q: Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished product. What's your prefered environment for creating? How do you get through rough patches?
A: Watch a film, browse tumblr, listen to music, get an idea. Have a good think about it, think about it some more, find a starting point, write it down, go from there. Maybe stick a draft on tumblr if I’m not sure if it’s going to fly. Write it anyway.
For OCs, figure out what someone looks like. That’s weirdly essential for me. Zal (Furiosa’s Dad) is Ed Harris, Young Val (Furiosa and Max’s grownup daughter) is Alicia Vikander and Toots (rescued-kid-turned-Wasteland-son-in-law) is Didier Drogba (bit of a blast from the past but hey). I was getting nowhere with Blues Mothers Jessie until I recast her as Sofia Boutella (because if Max is getting a generational update, she needs one too). And Firefly AU’s Mister Jobassa is Jakob Oftebro. All very pretty people, but what are you gonna do? But they’re only these people in MY head - they can be whoever the reader wants them to be. Oh, and Pin from Ordinary People was 100% an actual real tour guide I met on holiday once.
Preferred environment? Usually while half asleep in bed, or walking, or In the gym, or watching tv - world building seems to be something that happens away from the keyboard. Writing itself is exclusively on my phone so can and does happen anywhere at all. Rough patches are usually caused by guilt that I’m not spending enough time on the day job :P
Q: What (if any) music do you listen to for help getting those creative juices flowing?
A: I listen to music all the time anyway, mainly upbeat pre-90s tunes. Disco, funk, ska, motown, anything like that. And it always find its way into the writing. Sometimes artificially (where I’m on a song-lyrics-as-title theme - it took ages for some of the Wasteland fics) but most times it can help shape the story in a BIG way. I can’t listen to certain songs now without reliving a chapter or a whole fic - Dionne Warwick’s Do You Know The Way To San José is Bladerunner!Furiosa’s Green Place song, and Ash’s Angel Interceptor is StarTrek!Max’s flying music - it’s noisy enough but also speaks to me about a longing to not be alone in the universe. Concrete and Clay is smalltown!Max’s bittersweet lament for Jessie and Twistin’ The Night Away is the final party scene in Cheedo’s update of The Rivals. Some fics wouldn’t have been written at all if it wasn’t for a particular song. The Black Keys’ Heavy Soul was my original Wasteland Furiosa/Max ship theme back in 2015, before I’d even heard of ao3 - that’s the closest I’ve come to a song fic. Caleb was only Caleb because of a line in Symarip’s Skinhead Moonstomp, and I was so desperate to write a fic with Leo Sayer’s You Make Me Feel Like Dancing In it that it was the final excuse for a whole modern mirrorverse to my Wasteland headcanon series. Bet you’re sorry you asked now. But I’ll have to go and put together a Kirkyverse OST list.
Q: What is your biggest challenge as a creator?
A: To put the damn thing down and walk away. To not assume it’s awful if I don’t get a kudos in the first thirty hits. Thumb cramp from phone-typing.
Q: How have you grown as a creator through your participation in the Mad Max Fandom? How has your work changed? Have you learned anything about yourself?
A: I didn’t write at all before the Mad Max fandom. Apart from a ghost story when I was about seven (it did win a prize tbh) and a truly god awful Stephen King rip-off when I was fourteen (which makes me nauseous from embarrassment when I think of it). So a fair bit, it’d probably be fair to say. It would be impossible not to, you know, from zero :) My work has changed from spinoffs of inspirational fics (thanks Squid!) to ‘well, I suppose I’ve got a head canon, let’s see if I can make this work’ to ‘goddammit I’ll finish this if it kills me’. Then I missed my exit on the Roundabout of Fic Endings and had to go round again in a modern AU mirror verse. Now it’s all movie mashups, which is lots of fun and probably never-ending. During which time I have learned that crossovers are my favourite to write. And that writing fanfic is probably not a temporary fad :)
Q: Which character do you relate to the most, and how does that affect your approach to that character? Is someone else your favourite to portray? How has your understanding of these characters grown through portraying them?
A: I don’t really have a favourite tbh. They’re all their own people and do their own thing. Writing them is very dependent on their environment, and it’s often surprising how they behave and where they end up. It feels a bit like they’re on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Q: Do you ever self-insert, even accidentally?
A: Hah yes. The first one was Zephyr the annoying visitor in Witches and Ogres. Young Val’s social awkwardness in As was very much on loan from me.
Q: Do you have any favourite relationships to portray? What interests you about them?Furiosa and Max are pretty much always there - sometimes it’s probably platonic, and sometimes there’s a third person involved (nothing posted yet but but but). It depends on the fic.
Q: Do you prefer to create in one defined chronology or do your works stand alone? Why or why not?
A: One big long chronology for the headcanon series (childhood to old age), then a whole bunch of little universes for everything else.
Q: To break or not to break canon? Why?
A: Not to break, as much as I can. But it depends.
Q: Share some headcanons.
A: Furiosa was never actually a wife - she was captured but dodged the whole Vault experience. Max is the original Max, of Jessie and Sprog fame. Toecutter was Joe’s younger self - he scooted around on motorbikes and raised hell before deciding to settle down and take the Citadel. AU Toast and Dag are twins (from a shady mob family). Furiosa’s Dad is a friendly Wasteland bandit.
Q: If you work with OCs walk us through your process for creating them. Who are some of your favourites?
A: They’re supplementary characters who make the plots fit together, and sources of conflict or humour (usually both). I think I like Ordinary People’s Alexa and Mallory best. Although the Irish War Boy crew in Beyond the Pale were fun to write. Ace’s trio of love interests (Brick, Big Dave and Caleb/Pin) are a consistent theme. Sometimes I steal characters from other sources (stand up Christopher Brookmyre) when it’s convenient.
Q: What sparks your many wonderful AUs?
A: Movies, tv, gifs, tumblr prompts and general chitchat (thankyou btw!!!)
Q: A lot of your fics are light-hearted and hopeful, which is great to see for the apocalyptic Mad Max world. Your thoughts on that? What is it about the characters that inspires you to reframe them?
A: I just really like comedy and am committed to winkling it into every fictional scenario whether it’s appropriate or not. Glad people don’t hate it!
Q: Who are some works by other creators inside and outside of the fandom that have influenced your work?
A: Well, it was Squid’s ( @sacrificethemtothesquid )Length and Breadth of Fury Road that got me out of the starting blocks! Christopher Brookmyre’s The Sacred Art of Stealing was a big influence on my headcanon series, as was a particular Coronation Street storyline from some years back :)
Q: Tell us about a current WIP or planned project.
A: Blues Brothers AU series (Sweet Home Chicago) -Wasteland Star Trek First Contact AU (Angel Interceptor) -Firefly AU (Our Mister Jobassa) -His Dark Materials AU (unnamed as yet, just brewing in my head, hope it just stays there for the meantime) -Will combine all the headcanon works into one long fic sometime. That’s everything from Witches and Ogres through to Ordinary People. Probably be called ‘All the Things that I’ve Done’ (basically the two lives of Furiosa: Wasteland and mirrorverse).
Thank you @kirkypet

Your fics on starmora is my favourite thing. You respected their characters and relationship. Just like how James Gunn treated their unspoken thing. He is such a protector and respectful of starmora that he tease their dynamics and treated gamora more than just a sexual interest character. I hope IW4 treat her better although i don't have high expectation. So thank you. A quick prompt: jealous peter quill + gamora soothe him out and strengthen their love.
(you are too kind to me, anon, thank you so much! i hope you enjoy this fill :D)takes place at some point in time between guardians of the galaxy vol. 2 and avengers: infinity war.word count: 2.8k | ao3
Gamora had never been one to express herself openly, held her emotions close to her chest and her thoughts confined to her head. Still, as time with the Guardians went on, she often smiled more, cried more, laughed more, and she honestly couldn’t find a reason not to. There was little she found more comforting than a night in with the team when they were warm, safe, and happy on the Milano during their days off, or the small moments she shared with her sister, where Nebula would smile just the tiniest bit as they reminisced about their childhood memories together that didn’t result in insult or injury.
And, of course, Peter, who played one of the biggest roles in her newfound emotional journey, who wore his heart on his sleeve, who had good intentions, but a bit of a temper. Stubborn, sweet, bull-headed, kind-hearted Peter. She loved him, of course, every last bit of him, but his maturity levels weren’t exactly always where they needed to be.
It all started - or perhaps, escalated would be a more apt description - on their latest mission, to protect Prince Xavi of the Shi’ar Empire. “How old d’you think this dude is?” Peter asked, looking away from the navigation display to glance briefly at the others. “He’s gotta be loaded, right?”
“With the amount we’re getting paid? Hell yes,” Rocket said gleefully, rubbing his paws together. “And the Shi’ar are almost as old as the galaxy itself. I bet their prince ain’t no different.”
Upon landing on Chandilar, the throneworld of the Shi’ar Empire, they were quickly escorted to the palace, a behemoth of a building seemingly constructed entirely out of translucent crystal, where they were received by -
“Ah, Guardians. It’s an honor.” The prince got to his feet, bowing deeply. As he straightened up, it was then that the Guardians got a better look at his visage - tall but not overly so, with a lean, yet muscular build and rich olive complexion. He had a shock of dark hair and warm brown eyes, and bore a deep red cape over his dark, tight-fitting formal attire. Prince Xavi, it seemed, was no older than Peter. “I’ve heard many things about you. All good, of course.”
“Really? That’s a first,” Rocket snorted. Gamora shot him a warning look before bowing in return.
“Your highness, thank you for hiring us. We promise to serve you and your empire well,” she said politely.
“You must be Gamora.” Xavi extended a hand for her to take. “The deadliest woman in the galaxy.”
“A moniker with negative connotations,” Gamora replied, her smile tightening, though she accepted his hand. He brushed a kiss into her knuckles before withdrawing. “With all due respect, I would rather be remembered for saving lives instead of taking them.”
“Understood. My apologies,” Xavi nodded, smiling remorsefully. He turned towards the other Guardians. “You look troubled, Mister Quill. Is something wrong?”
Gamora glanced over at Peter, alarmed at the wrinkle between his brow and the rigidness of his mouth. “No, not at all, your highness. Probably just my face.”
“Uh, you sure about that?” Rocket squinted up at him. “Your normal face is usually pretty dopey-looking.”
“It’s just my face,” Peter repeated through gritted teeth. “So tell us about this event of yours, Prince Xavi. We’ve only heard the brief, didn’t get much detail.”
“Ah, yes.” Xavi brightened. “You see, it’s my time to ascend the throne and become king. But before that, I must choose my life partner, the one to rule by my side. This event is intended for me to meet all my potential suitors from across the galaxy and seek alliances. Of course, there may be the spurned ex-lover or unwelcome guest here or there, if you catch my meaning. I don’t just need a security team, I need people who can ensure the night goes smoothly for everyone. As frequent diplomatic collaborators with the Nova Corps - ”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Peter interrupted.
“ - I found you, Guardians, to be the best fit for the job,” Xavi finished, looking at Peter curiously. “It’s just for one night, and I assume the compensation was agreeable enough to bring you here in the first place. I doubt you’ll encounter more than a stray fist at the very most.”
“That sounds easy enough,” Mantis said with a warm smile. “May we see where the event will be held?”
After Xavi had given them a brief tour of the castle’s first floor, one of his servants led them to the guest quarters upstairs (“Please, I couldn’t possibly leave you to sleep on that ship of yours!” he had insisted) and left them to their devices until evening came around. Gamora lingered in the doorframe to the ensuite of her and Peter’s shared bathroom, watching him as he brushed his teeth. “You seem much more irritated than you were a few hours ago. Is something wrong?”
“I swear, if I had five units for every single time someone brought up our criminal pasts - ” Peter spat his toothpaste into the sink aggressively. “ - we’d be rich enough to quit.”
She frowned. “I’m sure to other people, my reputation sounds more exhilarating than offensive. Prince Xavi seems kind, I’m sure he didn’t mean anything by it.”
“Sure, but did he really have to kiss your hand?” He wiped his face down, staring at himself inquisitively in the mirror.
“So that’s what this is about.” Gamora straightened up, folding her arms across her chest. “You may be my boyfriend, Peter, but my body belongs to no one but me. If I had a problem with it, I would have stopped him myself. I didn’t, because he seemed well-intentioned. There was nothing more meant by it, so if you’re going to act like this all evening - ”
“Then what?” he snapped, a little louder than he meant. Peter recoiled at his own words, holding his hand out to stop her before she could leave. “Wait - Gamora, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. And you’re right, it wasn’t cool of me.”
She sighed, unfolding her arms. “Okay. Just…please don’t be rash. I know that’s a lot to ask of you sometimes, but…really, there’s nothing you have to worry about. And if there is, then I’ll handle it. You just make sure everything goes well tonight.”
He exhaled slowly too, squeezing her shoulders in apology. “Yeah, well, easier said than done.”
The Guardians made their way downstairs an hour later, with Peter and Gamora briefly meeting with the head of Xavi’s security detail, dictating where all the guards were to be placed and the procedures for guests coming and going. “I think it would be best if Nebula and I remain stationed with you, your highness,” Gamora suggested when Prince Xavi briefly returned to see how they were doing. “We both use close-range weapons. With any luck, it will never come to close combat, but just in case. The others use guns; they’d be best positioned from a distance.”
Peter looked at her incredulously before turning back to look at the prince. “Well, I guess that makes sense,” he mumbled under his breath. “Drax, you with me on the balustrade?” Drax nodded sharply in agreement. “Rocket and Groot, you got the floor. And Mantis…”
“I will be at the door, greeting guests,” Mantis said cheerfully. “That way I can feel out for harmful intentions.”
“Excellent,” Prince Xavi said, clapping his hands together. “I can see I made the right decision in hiring you, Guardians. The guests will start arriving in half an hour, so I must return to my quarters to get ready, but I’ll see you all later.”
Gamora sent Peter one last warning glance before leading Nebula elsewhere, causing the other Guardians to look at him with varying degrees of concern. “What’d you do, Quill?” Rocket said, half-snickering.
“Nothing,” Peter insisted. “C’mon, Drax.”
The group dispersed, taking their positions among the palace guards. The room rapidly became filled with bodies and noise, the galaxy’s elite circling each other like sharks as they chatted politely over the gentle classical music. Peter had a good vantage point from the balustrade, but he could only just see the tops of people’s heads at times, especially that of Prince Xavi directly below, while Gamora and Nebula were almost always just a few steps behind. Women and men of varying degrees of cosmic influence would approach, wanting to prove their worth to the prince, while the sisters, for the most part, looked alert, but bored.
Peter relaxed a little bit. He was being silly, wasn’t he? They were working, he couldn’t afford to be this unprofessional. Back when they first started, he’d been a bit callous, overly emotional, but by now, he had learned how to keep himself in check. People weren’t going to hire the Guardians if he couldn’t be a good, rational leader. He had to set an example.
“Something’s troubling you, Quill,” Drax commented, eyeing him intently. “Is it Gamora? Are you having relationship problems?”
“No, I’m just being paranoid,” Peter said with a self-deprecating chuckle. “Don’t worry about me, Drax.”
“You worry me regardless,” Drax replied airily. “If this about Prince Xavi’s physical contact with Gamora earlier - ”
“God, am I that obvious?” Peter muttered, mostly to himself.
“ - he is, of course, quite handsome. Strong cheekbones, and that masculine jawline,” Drax said wistfully. “Very rich, good-mannered, well-educated - ”
“Yes, I got it, thank you,” Peter interrupted loudly. Some of the nearby guests turned to look at him oddly.
“He may be leagues above you in many categories, Quill, but you have nothing to be concerned about,” Drax said, clapping Peter on the back a little too hard. “Over our years together, we’ve encountered many a superior mate for Gamora. If she wanted to leave you for another, she would have done it by now.”
Peter looked at Drax incredulously. “Dude.”
“I speak the truth,” Drax shrugged. “I see no reason to protect you from it.”
Sighing, Peter leaned against the railing, watching as Xavi whispered something briefly to Gamora, who nodded and politely, but firmly escorted the hysterical youth in front of them away from the crowd. “Fine. You want some truth? Sometimes, I don’t know why she ever liked me in the first place. You’re right, we have run into people who seem like a better match for her. Guys who are more, I dunno, ambitious. Level-headed. Guys who don’t get crazy jealous or super mad on a whim, who don’t go around makin’ dumb jokes and bad choices.”
Drax nodded thoughtfully. “It sounds like a conversation better suited for you and Gamora, I think,” he suggested. “But if it makes you feel better, Quill…”
“It probably won’t,” Peter snorted.
“…I may have had my doubts about your romantic compatibility when we first became a team, but no longer.” Drax smiled. “She loves you for a reason, so you must tell her what you have told me. I’m sure she will cast away all your doubts. And you know how much she values honesty.”
Peter couldn’t help but smile back. “Thanks, Drax. That actually did make me feel better. Who woulda guessed it?”
Meanwhile, Gamora returned to Prince Xavi’s side, nodding at him briefly before retreating behind him once more with her sister. “Can you at least pretend to be enthused?” Gamora scolded, gently prodding Nebula’s side. “Our primary directive might not be helping him find a spouse, but scowling at everyone who approaches the prince isn’t going to get us paid, either.”
“Why does Quill agree to inane jobs like this?” Nebula grouched. “And he clearly isn’t enjoying himself either.”
Gamora shrugged. “Money,” she said simply. “Sustaining the lifestyles of seven people isn’t easy. This job is nothing more than glorified bodyguard work, but we’ll have enough units to carry us through for months. It was the right decision.”
“Yes, because Quill is such a rational being,” Nebula muttered, folding her arms across her chest.
“What exactly do you mean by that?” Gamora frowned.
“You think his tantrum from earlier was acceptable, then?”
“Growing up with you and our siblings, I’ve gotten very used to anger,” Gamora retorted. “He may have a temper, but so do I. And he means well. He isn’t possessive or spiteful. He has no intention to harm anyone involved. Besides, I’ve done the very same to him.”
Nebula’s smirk deepened. “High Priestess Ayesha?”
“One encounter of many,” Gamora admitted with a laugh. “I’ve had my moments of jealousy. Peter’s charismatic, he’s good with people. It’s easy for them to be charmed by him in a matter of minutes.” She softened, squeezing Nebula’s elbow. “Believe me, if I thought his behavior was unacceptable, I would have made it clear. You don’t have to worry about me, Nebula.”
“Worry?” Nebula blanched at the very word. “I do not - ”
“You were never a very good liar, sister,” Gamora said teasingly, looping their arms together, guiding her as they followed the prince across the floor. “But I’ll let it go for now.”
To the Guardians’ relief (and Rocket’s disappointment), the night closed out with barely a peep. A few excessively-indulgent drunkards here and there, a couple rambunctious young ones who caused a bit of a stir and accidentally broke a priceless statue in the foyer, but otherwise, Prince Xavi’s worries were unfounded, and he found himself being courted by another handsome prince to boot. He thanked them profusely before insisting they get a good night’s rest in their guest quarters instead of taking off in the dead of night, promising that a hearty breakfast and their generous payment would be waiting for them in the morning.
Gamora, once again, found Peter as he was brushing his teeth. She made quick work of changing into her sleepclothes before joining him at the other sink, toothbrush in hand. Their eyes met in the mirror. “Rather anticlimactic, don’t you think?” she commented lightly. “I think Rocket was secretly hoping for something exciting to happen. He’s been wanting to use that new gun of his for ages.”
“Y’know, sometimes, these ‘boring’ jobs ain’t so bad.” Peter smiled. “I don’t always wanna be panicking every five seconds that someone’s about to die.”
“Agreed,” she chuckled. Once they were both done, she led him back into the bedroom, both of them collapsing with a satisfied sigh onto the enormous mattress and its silky sheets. They laid on top of the duvet in silence for a moment, enjoying the quiet, before she spoke again. “I…was a bit hypocritical earlier. I’ve been just as upset whenever we ran into a woman showing active interest in you. We’re both alike in that sense.”
“Still, I could’ve been less of a dick about it. I can’t promise it’s never gonna happen again, but I am sorry for treatin’ him - and you - like that.” Peter slowly turned his head to look at her. “So I was talkin’ to Drax about what happened, and I said a couple of things he thought would be better for you to hear.”
She returned his gaze, looking at him curiously. “What is it?”
“I guess…the reason that I get weirded out whenever someone seems interested in you is ‘cos I don’t really get why you’re interested in me.” Peter swallowed, breaking their eye contact in favor of staring up at the ceiling. “And like, this isn’t a self-esteem issue or anything. It’s more like…the girls I’ve been with before…they know me as the fun guy. Impulsive, fun, adventure-lovin’ Peter. And then there’s you, and you’re so…confident, and powerful, and badass, and those are all reasons why I fell for you crazy fast. But it doesn’t really explain the other way around, y’know?”
“You think we’re incompatible?” Gamora guessed. Peter nodded, still refusing to meet her eyes. “I don’t see it that way at all. I think of us as opposites who complement each other. Not perfectly, of course. But we work as partners and significant others.”
“But don’t you want someone who’s got their head on straight? Someone who doesn’t let stuff like this bother him?” Peter turned onto his side, tempted to bury his face into the pillows and never come out.
“I don’t want that. I want you,” Gamora insisted, tugging on his shoulder to roll him back over and resting her hand against his cheek. “You’re passionate, and kind, and more clever than you look.” Peter let out a soft noise of protest, but allowed her to snuggle in closer, anyway. “You make for a good leader, friend, and boyfriend. You make me happy, Peter, and really, isn’t that all that matters?”
He smiled, his eyes finally coming back to hers, and they sparkled with something so mischievous and yet so gentle, and though it had been years since he’d first looked at her like that, Gamora’s heart still beat a little faster like it was the very first time. “You’re right. As always.”
“Not always, just most of the time,” she corrected with an impish grin. She leaned in, brushing a barely-there kiss against his lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Peter wrapped his arms around her middle, burying his face into her neck with a relieved sigh. “And you make me happier than anyone else. You really, really do.”

The Vault Sexteen End of Year Fic Rec List 2017
because i read a lot of fallout fanfiction in the last five months and i want to justify it
i get into the nitty gritty of Why I Like These Fics So Much because i love explaining things, so i’m shoving this under a cut!
Honesty, Industry, Prudence by meanoldauthor
Slaves of Caesar's Legion are all but invisible. Most use it to avoid punishment, but the clever might turn it to their own gain. A rare few, through a roll of fate, might gain unexpected influence on the Legion itself.
Caesar's Priestesses are the only women held in any regard among the Legion, and even then only as caretakers and nurses to children. A mysterious and select group, their influence seems to go no further than the Temple doors. However, one lucky slave sees beyond the safety and softness of their work--and into a far deeper potential.
a wholly self-contained, character-driven story that takes us through life in the Legion through a woman’s eyes, and also one of the first FNV fics i ever read that captured my interest. i love worldbuilding and i super love when fics explore and build upon established canon and give these worlds their own space to breathe, to take a peek behind the curtain. this fic builds upon the Legion’s lore excellently, weaving a rich tapestry that makes the setting come alive. Aquilina is also a very compelling character with strong motivations, and keeping up with her life was always super interesting.
Qui Sumus by ghostofshe
A deceiver, two frumentarii, and a Courier, betting on the future of the Legion with a stack of mismatched cards and stolen caps.
4 chapters and yet to be finished but i love love love it. the Courier gets replaced by his twin sister and it’s already an intriguing premise but the writing for the characters really sold this fic for me. if you can’t tell, i am a sucker for character-driven stories, but that’s really because the characters are the backbone of a good story, for me - and the ones here are super strong and distinct and are really fun to watch. Cato and Nox and Canus are great, but i also love the depiction of Vulpes Inculta here - here’s a version of him that’s around someone familiar, which is super jarring usually, but what we’ve seen of him so far works for the character in my opinion.
dear hearts and gentle people by cheloniidae
The Courier survives the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. Her mother loses her all the same.
the Courier’s exploits told from her family’s point of view - a concept that’s been done before, but this one pulls it off the best, in my opinion. short but bittersweet! all the details about Johanna’s life and her relationship with her family come forward, and her motivations for the events of FNV, which take place off-screen, are at the forefront.
oasis of light by cheloniidae
A late night's work before the war.
(Instead of a family, Robert House has a city.)
if i am a sucker for anything, it’s character studies, and this was an excellent character study for House. it’s under 700 words but it perfectly encapsulates House’s motivations and feelings so well that it made a huge impression on me, and made me think about how i frame the motivations of my own characters.
G, You Look Good To Me by moon_crater & SynthApostate
Razz has a problem. O’Hanrahan is more than happy to help! Cheerfully, annoyingly happy to help. Whether Razz wants him to or not.
this fic is SO CUTE. it’s SO GOOD. minor FNV characters really got to shine in this fic, it has 6 chapters so far and i love every single one of them. it does a fantastic job of setting up the budding relationship between its main pair, their chemistry is so great. they’re finding that they have more in common with each other than they thought - but they also start to appreciate their differences, too. and it’s not just about o’hanrahan & razz, but poindexter and mags have integral roles, too, and their relationship as a whole unit is explored as well. i love how their friendships are slowly but surely developing together.
Here’s to the Losers by moon_crater
Fate decides Benny needs to acquire four-feet-ten inches of mouthy sidekick. Benny disagrees. Too bad he's got no say in the matter.
don’t you love it when characters are kicked down a peg or two or ten? ‘cause i sure do, and this fic hits Benny hard. Benny Gecko, shitty garbage man, has to take care of a smart-mouthed little kid, and it’s beautiful and also amazing. he’s still so obviously Benny, he can smooth-talk his way out of getting killed by raiders but he’s also always looking around every corner for anything that might kick him in the gut or stab him in the neck, and it’s just amplified when he’s in a situation where he has to look out for something other than himself. they got his character down cold and the situation they put him in is a great test of that character. plus, the kid is super funny and a great character in their own right, and i love their interactions! they play off each other super well!
The “Moron” in “Moroni” by TerribleAndSadThings
“Men like Graham do not change, Courier. His loyalty was never to Caesar, but to the war Caesar provided him. His religion is not that of New Canaanites, but that of battle. His god is not of kindness or mercy, but of slaughter.”
first off, THIS COURIER. WHAT A CHARACTER. seeing this Courier that is just a force of nature is so great, and my favorite kind of Courier if i’m being completely honest. just reading the other NPCs try to figure out how this Courier even works is always entertaining. and then there’s his relationship with Joshua Graham, which feels like such a cataclysmic disaster yet feels very very right. this fic has maybe one of my most favorite depictions of Joshua Graham ever.
and that’s not even getting into the SMUT PART
Case File: Vulpes Inculta by RandamHajile & turianosauruswrex
In the year 2299, over a decade and a half since the death of Caesar and the fall of the Legion, we’ve followed two reporters, Delilah Wells of Radio New Vegas and Carlos Rendón of the New Vegas Times, as they’ve come together in the capital city of the Mormon nation of New Deseret to uncover the mystery behind a grave anonymous tip they’ve been given–is Vulpes Inculta, the infamous war criminal said to have been slain in 2282, still alive and free in the Holy City of New Zion? And if so, what sort of danger could he pose, and can he be brought to justice for his heinous crimes? Join us now as the trail goes hot, and the mystery deepens…
now this list is NOT in any particular order BUT... this is the Best fanfic i have ever read this year, bar none. it’s at 2 chapters so far, but don’t be fooled: it’s an epistolary whodunit with loads of journal entries, audio recordings, letters, transcripts, and more to pore through and discover. what i can say here, i already said in the comments for chapter 2:
Words cannot grasp how much I love this fic, but by Jove, I'll try. It's SO GOOD. And wonderfully written and presented, holy crap. It's plain to see how much effort went into making everything look, and it adds so much to the characters and setting: examples that stick out to me are the pristine, color-printed recruitment pamphlets of Brotherhood of Steel; Delilah's photographs; Arthur Young's ADORABLE stationary; the sketches in Carlos' notepad; the New Vegas telegraphs... I'll be here all day if I list 'em all. And those are just the VISUAL element...
The audio recordings have mismatched volume levels for each actor and are at times hard to make out, which is explained in-verse by having the recordings be from a wire - not saying it's bad, in fact I think it gives the recordings lots of personality. And the voice talents themselves do a great job! Delilah has a nice, clear voice for radio and Carlos is mumbly with a sort of flat voice, which I think suits him perfectly.
The writing and worldbuilding is just stellar, too. Delilah and Carlos KNOW what they're doing, and I love learning more about them as more and more details begin to show themselves, and it's all very seamlessly integrated with the main story. Trying to figure out the mystery of Vulpes Inculta along with them never feels boring and I am on the edge of my seat wondering how things are going to develop aaaaahhhhh oh my GOD.
In short, I love this fic and I think anyone who loves Fallout should read it. Thanks!
THOSE HAVE BEEN MY TOP PICKS FOR THIS YEAR! YOWZA!!!

writer tag thingy
I’ve been miracously tagged by @wearemykingdom like eons ago, so let’s do this :P 1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?
Yes. More than one actually, but at the moment it’s my. Fucking. Goddamn. HUGE-ASS. Mount Olympus / Roman Empire Batman / Crossover Gotham x Arkham Games AU.
It has become so complex lately that I just can’t find the will to continue structuring the plot at the moment.
2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?
You really think I’d give you the means to search for it eh. But well, when we’re talking about English works (I have written more stories in my first language of course, so the ones in English are rather limited) it’s probably one of my earliest Hannigram fics. The theme is horrid because ao3 was so new to me back then including all the porn there and I was like “Hey, I can do this too! I want so many views as well!”
So I wrote a smut OS. And I despise it to this very day.
I’m not averse to smut in the least, but I didn’t like it mostly because it lacked a good plot, it lacked any kind of finesse, and, frankly, it also lacked dignity for both the characters. I also hate this OS in particular since I wrote it merely for the sake of gaining attention, I guess. I was a tag-along. You see, I don’t write smut too often, but when I do, I can’t help but try putting in a story which at least compliments the kinks.
Which reminds me, I should probably delete said shameful OS… but it is on my old account. Shit, need to search for the password.
3) what order do you write in? front of 📓 to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
Fucking mess. Usually, my ideas start with that one goddamn scene in my head and I scribble it down in mere desperation whereever I can. Then I search for a good song accompanying the general mood of the story and somehow work up to this very scene if I can get my ass in gear. So, I usually start at the beginning.
4) favorite character you’ve written
Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham. They have wonderfully complex psyches to play with.
5) character you were most surprised to end up writing to write?
Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes - I don’t know anything about The Walking Dead, never watched one darn episode. It was a gift for a friend back then.
6) something you would go back and change in your writing that it’s too late/complicated to change now
I was much on the sappy and dramatic / sentimental side of prose for what seems like ages. I would stretch dialogue and thus doom it to become artificial in the long run. Purple prose is no bad thing, but I certainly overdid it more than once. Which is why I’m currently trying to keep my writing as true as possible.
I still love fancy words, but I need to find my own voice between the lines. And I need to finally figure out for whom I write in particular aka who I believe worth of being called ’my muse’… I already know the name of said creature, but I simply can’t decide about their appearance. Suprisingly, Persona 5 has given me great concepts to work with concerning this. I hope I’ll figure it out in time.
7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?
I do not like to tell people I write if they don’t write themselves. I’ve been having bad experiences otherwise, including family members as well as friends and strangers. Mostly, I have been ridiculed, laughed at or looked over with a furrowed brow.
The only time my writing was kind of acknowledged back in my youth when I would read essays and short stories we would sometimes be tasked with in school. My classmates were glad when I read my stuff, but let me just say… they were happier they didn’t have to read their stuff instead than anything else.
8) favorite genre to write
Is “Give me thee pure and I’ll make thee cry and die” a genre ?
To be honest, I’m not sure which genre I usually write in. I think it’s tragedy / drama.
9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?
Listening to music is one go, watching amvs, Let’s Plays of Horror Games and movies plus reading books are the others. I also cry.
10) write in silence or with background noise? with people or alone?
@wearemykingdom I’m mostly with you on this one holy shit.
to quote her wise words : SILENCE. FUCKING SILENCE. I LOVE SILENCE. AND ALONE.
Alone indeed, I’m a sucker for solitude -> Solitaire - Marina & The Diamonds
The problem is, I have a problem concerning silence - it’s never enough silence. I have grown used to write on my laptop with in-ear headphones on the ready, but even the sound of the keys or my own breathing would disturb me. Since then I have tried to find in-ear headphones (I can’t wear on-ear headphones due to reasons I won’t explain further) which isolate me from literally anything but fuck, it’s hard to find them, not to mention how much some of them cost. I’m also no friend of bluetooth which makes it all the more difficult to find anything usable. *sigh* Currently - to drown out all the noise of the outside world - I try listening to classical music. Especially violines are soothing for me.
11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?
I have literally no ass clue.
12) your weaknesses as an author
I’m always busy with plotting things out, imagining scenes and stuff, but I’m often strangely scared of really WRITING IT DOWN. Also I often get bored in the middle of a story and tend to discard it. Also I have been doubting myself quite much lately which is annoying.
13) your strengths as an author
I have literally no ass clue. My writing style has changed dramatically since last year - it will take a while till it gains some consistency again.
14) do you make playlists for your current wips?
“I spend more time on making playlists than writing on my current wips these days” I declare in shame, with four youtube tabs open.
15) why did you start writing?
To find my voice. Also to finally shut down the other voices and people occupying my head.
16) are there any characters who haunt you?
My OCs who want to kick my ass for me outlining their stories - but little old me is still too afraid to write them down.
Oh, also Joker and Batman aka Batjokes. I run into so many new kinds of story takes on their relationship these days and each has its special charm, this isn’t funny anymore.
17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?
Me: OH MY GOD STOP MAKING THEM TALK SO MUCH ADD SOME DESCRIPTION INSTEAD YOU DUMB POPTART
fledgling author self : *opens up another conversation about death and undying love with a crazed glint in her eyes*
Me:
18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?
Perfume - The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. The descriptions are various and exquisite.
Duma Key, Lisey’s Story and many other novels of Stephen King. You, good Sir, ruined me and my standards concerning horror fiction.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. A special book with Death lending his perspective and word.
The Bartimaeus Sequence by Jonathan Stroud - So funny it made me laugh out more than once. Close to my heart.
19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?
Miley: outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.
John Travolta: Me
20) do you write in long sit-down sessions or in little spurts?
I used to write in long sit-down sessions but currently I’m having a hard with them. I’m happy with little spurts.
21) what do you think when you read over your older work?
22) are there any subjects that make you uncomfortable to write?
Not yet. Which reminds me, I should probably expand my field of writing themes.
23) any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?
Besides always feeling like I don’t belong to anything or anybody like some weird E.T. shtick? Dunno.
24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?
I have never known so much about homosexuality and ransoming people sold into slavery in the times of the Roman empire than I do now. So yes, more than once. I want every detail as accurate as possible.
25) copy/paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you’re particularly proud of
This isn’t short, because I am proud of this whole scene. Enjoy. ->
The fire is bright and hot and all-consuming as it licks across the doorframe and drags itself into the room with sharpened, yellow claws.
He might be blind, but the cackle of burning wood crawling closer to his position is a guess as sure as a man can get. He leans against the wall, fists numb, mind dazed by pain, flickers challenging the red-rimmed shadows behind his eyelids to join the dance. Why is he in pain again? He doesn’t know. The muscles in his legs are jelly, the flesh of his arms clad in stone. It feels more like his natural state to dwell in than anything else he has come in contact with in STEM yet which is impressive to realize if you think about it. But this isn’t STEM, is it? No. The fire came before they plugged him into this machine manufactured in hell. He tries to breathe in but can’t, not really, no matter how hard he tries; someone must have poured ice into his lungs. And why doesn’t this surprise him either? Everything seems to go the way it’s supposed to be.
He looks ahead and sees nothing but wary shapes taking form.
There stands Lily. And Lily screams, tears streaming down her cheeks like liquid glass. The fire catches her from behind and presses its lambent teeth into her hair, immediately going up in flames. Her skin bursts open und reveals tender muscle cords and bones which will never have the chance of growing out. They turn from white to pale yellow, from yellow to ocher, from ocher to a shade close to carbon black. He watches teary-eyed till her screams ring in his ears to the rhythm of his blaring heartbeat. What he called his daughter turns into a pile of ash and he could never put in words how much he despises himself for feeling relieved - if only for a moment, lost and uncared for - when the screaming dies down with her and fades into whimpers that are easily drowned out by the fire’s roar of triumph following behind.
When it turns its ugly orange head at him, jaw-grinding and repellently jubilant, he is as ready as one can be while they catch a beast’s eye. It teeters into his direction like a drunk whore that had their fill but are too far gone to realize it’s already over. He neither welcomes the plague nor shoos it away. And when it’s so close that its claws reach out to scratch the stubble on his chin, he couldn’t care less.
Being bathed in flames hurts less than he expected and more than his nightmares have ever dared to introduce him to. Heat engulfes him, the pain of thousand ant bites impaling his skin and rip through muscles and sinews. Thank fuck Lily had suffocated before she could feel this way… but no, she hadn’t, had she? Mobius took her. The charred corpse they found, the size of a child; four tiny fingers barely intact, the others scrunched to nothing. Myra and he had buried a forgery. Then she left and had made him live a forgery himself.
He only recognizes in passing that the ash started crawling up the floor and drapes over his sizzling bones. One could have called it a last act of consolation. A mercy he doesn’t deserve. The moulding ember is balm to his raw-burnt limbs, hovering over him, weaving a blanket of dead life upon his shoulders and his heaving back. He doesn’t struggle, nor does he think about getting up. He sits and pants and allows the dark remains of wood and flesh and cotton candy to encloak his body like a banshee offering her grave-cold kiss. The room has turned into furnace by now, the smell of his cooking flesh stuck in his nostrils. There is no end, no beginning, no remorse to deal with; only a hunger he is meant to satisfy but can’t. He just can’t do anything right, can he? The fire does not mind his inability. The fire is hungry, and Sebastian is easy prey.
Darkness, sweet as nectar, drinks him in. He lets it. Yet again I will torture tag @universallylightcherryblossom - (I’m sorry honey, but I don’t know too many writers here). Whoever reads this and wants to do it is more than welcome to feel tagged.

Not to be disrespectful or anything, but could you explain why you don't like top!cas, omega!cas etc? I don't quite understand why it's such a big deal--I mean obviously it's a big deal for you, but I don't quite get the mentality behind it and I' would like to understand a bit better. (Im asexual and a lot of sexual things confuse me) Don't feel obligated to answer or anything, I'm just curious :) ❤️
(I do love omega!Cas, omega!Cas is amazing.)
Are you ready for an essay? Because you’ll get one.
As to your question I have to say that it’s hard to explain because the answer is impossibly interwoven with very personal mindsets and experiences regarding sexuality and sex itself. I’m not really comfortable sharing personal details, especially on here like this… So I can’t fully answer this question in any way that would make it easier to understand why this is a big deal for me.
I can however explain certain circumstances which have made me uneasy about top!Cas and which continue to influence how I see Cas or do not want to see Cas as a sexual being in a sexual relationship with Dean.
Those who have followed me for a while know this story already, but here it is again: When I had seen enough of SPN to finally be able to read fanfic featuring Cas, the end of season 6 had just happened. In the hiatus that followed many explored a new power dynamic between Dean and Cas. Cas had always been more powerful than Dean, which for me made it wonderful when Dean still was the one calling the shots and Cas never abused the power he had over Dean - when it got to sex and intimacy.
I don’t know if it was just bad luck or me specifically seeking out stories with god Cas (because I like monstruous Cas): there were a lot of fics in which the new Cas is God power dynamic involved Castiel forcing Dean to be his slave. And there was a lot of dubious consent involved. I was uncomfortable with the position it placed Dean in, especially considering how I interpreted Dean as a character back then. I know it’s hypocritcal of me to say I was uncomfortable with the dub-con because I will read dub-con or non-con if the power inbalance is in Dean’s favour. But I love the healing in those fics, or the fact that it’s seen as wrong and that there is no fixing it. I’m all about the consequences after the hurt. Most fics I read with Godstiel and his consort/ sex slave/ punching bag Dean had no consequence at all. And I’m not even saying that all fics did it for the kink (which is a valid choice, I’m not judging); I’ve read one that was very clever but even scarier as a consequence when Dean just gave up in the end. No world remained but Cas. This sort of deal.
As I mentioned before, anything that has been written about this kind of top!Cas and (unwilling) bottom!Dean scenario is totally fine, interesting and worthwhile to explore. But the fics I read unsettled me and I’ve not been able to enjoy the idea of top!Cas since.
(Side note: this doesn’t mean that I haven’t read top!Cas since my early days as a fic reader. There are authors where I’m willing to read fics even when they’re tagged with switching, though it tends to be easier in AU fanfics because these clash less with my ideas about Dean and Cas.)
Another thing is that sometimes there are certain traits connected to top!Cas which I don’t enjoy. But this is different from fic to fic, I don’t want to generalize it too much.
To sum up: I absolutely appreciate Cas being a capable, rough, awe and fear inspiring monster (and I love whenever the show/ fics remind us of the fact that he is monstruous). And I feel he would like to take Dean’s dick.
End of essay.
P.S. I have recently talked about situations where I had less of a problem with bottom!Dean / top!Cas and using sex positions as a narrative tool. Which, by the way you can totally do. Maybe bottoming doesn’t mean anything deep in the real world, but we’re dealing with fiction. In fiction the colour of someone’s shirt or how much scruff he has is meaningful. Whether one is ready to bottom or not is too.
Disclaimer: I do not mean to step on anybody’s toes. I’m merely discussing my own personal reactions to top!Cas. They are not meant to be a judgment on fics featuring top!Cas and people liking top!Cas. If anyone wants to discuss the topic further feel free to comment or send me an ask.

Brickclub17: 1.1.1-1.1.5
So we have on of the mission statements/core theses of this book on page one:
“True or false, what is said about men often figures as large in their lives, and above all in the fate that befalls them, as what they do."
A huge part of this book is about perception vs. reality and how the one shapes the other. Jean Valjean is not a dangerous criminal, but because he spends so long being perceived as one, that is what he becomes (until he meets the bishop and that perception is reversed/subverted). Fantine was more or less okay until she started being perceived as fallen/sinful, and then it all went to hell for her (and she eventually embraced those perceptions in an act of pure spite and loss of fucks to give). Javert also spends his entire life trying to shape reality to match his preexisting perceptions of what it should be. Thenardier, being Thenardier, blames public perception for his own crimes, arguing that he had to turn to crime and scamming because everyone thought he was doing t anyway, basically. Gossip, public opinion, and social norms are hugely influential forces in this novel. (Thought: this relates to the narrative structure itself. Hugo’s ever present narrator character plays the part of public opinion, basically, inserting his own opinions into things and trying to influence how the reality of the text is perceived. Like here, when he goes on about how this bit doesn’t really matter to the main story, he’s influencing how the reader reads this section and how much weight is given to it. And, of course, for all that he says it’s not super relevant, it’s actually extremely important to setting up both the moral center of the story and the initial plotlines.)
In lighter news, I still want a whole book about Myreil’s life before he became a bishop. I think that would make a really interesting book. Or super detailed fic written by someone more willing to research than me. Although, again, all of this is reported as being purely heresay. Hugo is usually a reliable narrator, but he makes a point of casting doubt on that reliability when he wants to. I think he’s definitely playing with perception vs. reality and challenging his readers to figure out what he’s doing.
Also, unsurprisingly, the ‘bonhomme’ pun still fails to translate.
“In so falling he falls on his knees, and it may end in prayer."
This is some delightful foreshadowing, I must say. Evocative, simple, perfectly in character for the bishop, and pretty much exactly what’s going to happen to Jean Valjean in a few chapters.
Basically, this whole introduction section sets up the moral themes of the entire book. That said, this first iteration of them is... simplistic, I suppose you could say. The Bishop does not condemn the law, he praises God. He works for social change on a purely individual level, or maybe a village level at most. He wants people to do good simply because they can, rather than changing anything systemic. These are admirable goals, mind you, but one of the philosophical journeys in this book is watching how those same ideals get broadened until you get to full scale social upheaval in the form of uprising and revolution. It’s book of argument and then counterargument. The bishop argues for social change via the individual. It’s a philosophy embodied first by the bishop himself and later by Jean Valjean. But Fantine exists in direct counterargument to that philosophy, and so after her story the novel’s ideas evolve to take that into account. I don’t know how much of it was Hugo working out his ideas on paper and how much was him leading his readers through something he’d already figured out, but it’s really quite effective.
Also, between the guillotine bit here and the cannon bit in 93, I think we can definitely say that Hugo has a thing for personifying weapons. Can’t say I’m complaining. (Also, I can’t remember how pretty this section is in French, but it’s pretty pedestrian, language wise, in English. Poetry was definitely not Donougher’s focus.)
“To anyone able to see it at close hand the voluntary poverty in which the bishop of Digne lived would have been a dignified and charming spectacle."
Hugo And Poverty is super weird. Like, most of the time he recognizes that being grindingly poor is not particularly fun. You’ve got Fantine and Eponine as the best examples of this, but also the rhetoric he uses makes it clear that, on some level, he gets it. But as soon as there’s any hint of choice in the matter, like with Marius or the Bishop, suddenly very similar conditions become charming and saintly and good for the soul. It’s like there’s this mental disconnect for him that doesn’t let him realize that, whatever the circumstances that caused someone to live in poverty, the practical effects are probably pretty similar.
