The Victorians were a strange bunch, and often had rather macabre senses of humour. These feelings extended to that of Christmas, as exemplified by this beautifully embossed, albeit distinctly grim Christmas card. Christmas Cards became a huge industry only a few years after their introduction with the Penny Post in 1843 - and by the 1880s, had become a vast range of strange, albeit handsome Greetings in a number of formats and designs. This particular one is a smaller "token card", with a single sided print and a Postcard-esque format on the rear. It was printed by Charles Goodall, who also manufactured playing cards and postcards. Reflections. As I sipped a cup of tea this morning, the last day of 2020, I looked over at this Christmas tableau in my dining room and I saw... The Infant Jesus of Prague blessing the world as generous-hearted Santa, teacher of the joy of giving - and receiving, rides Hannibal the elephant, into the New Year. Brave Hannibal, with the fortitude and compassion of his breed, will get us through. A tiny Nativity scene lights the spark of hope while a multitude of Florentine angels in the background watch over us. A little white church serves to remind me to give thanks. In the background, my grandmother’s antique holly plate brings me both joy and the gift of remembrance of those who are no longer in this earthly plane. I hadn’t thought about any of this when I put these pieces together quite honestly. But for some reason, this morning all these things had something important to say. I doubt I’ll look at them differently ever again. ................................ 🐘🐘🐘 A note about Santa and the elephant (because I am sure you want to know 😉)...they date to the 1930s. Hannibal is made of papier-mâché. Santa is dressed in a felt coat and he holds a tiny tree. His pants are made of crepe paper!! Time to go to church. This is a German Candle House, made in the 1930s, and one of my most special Christmas pieces. It’s basically made of paper and cardboard. I am always amazed that it has survived for almost 100 years. It has a trap door in the roof so that you could put an actual candle inside. The mere thought of that makes me cringe. When you look through the front door, you can see a baptismal font, an altar, and a “stained glass” window of the crucifixion inside. There’s a lovely little pink glass bell in the tower and (you can’t see it in this photo) a tiny little priest in black robes coming around the corner. The old elephant nodder is ready to join in the choir, too.
