Anti-Jewish incidents surged around the world this week, again.
The problem is not just that Jewish people are having our lives threatened, synagogues ambushed, and families pummelled.
It’s that no one wants to talk about it.

I absolutely adore how safe I feel in my offline (and, to an extent, online) jewish spaces. What I don't adore is why I only really feel safe in those spaces (jew hatred is so vapid)

Oh nvm surprise surprised that rando demanding sources for the overwhelmingly obvious campus antisemitism has dedicated their entire blog to demanding that the "Zionists" must be destroyed. Blocked.

Coworkers & clients keep asking me if I've heard about the various student protests for Palestine taking place in the US and the fact that many protestors keep harassing random Jews. And like a) yeah, I'm aware and b) you aren't asking any of my other coworkers about this, I know you're only asking cause you know I'm Jewish, it's weird.

Was checking the ADL to grab some sources on explaining the antisemitism in Minecraft for some YouTube comments (because that’s all I do these days /lh this time it was in the TRO vid on Notch pointing out how he’s been bigoted since the beginning) but anyways I got this lovely pop up.

The Jews (me) are tired. I’m more scared of getting hate crime-d for being Jewish every time I leave the house than I am for being openly trans.

Sunday Shaky Sunday
Some people go to church on Sunday. Some fry wings and watch college basketball, and some bundle up for a hike in the woods while their kids are in Hebrew School. Yesterday our whole family, armed with cleaning products, walked over to a neighbor’s newly built house to erase the black spray-painted hateful messages they found on the white brick siding. It was reassuring to see so many people…

I hate what the Israeli government is doing but I'm scared of contributing to the rise in anti-semitism in the US. I'm not Jewish and not super keyed in to anti-semitism. Obviously, anyone talking shit about the Jewish people is someone I should fight, but there are things I should watch out for even when they say "Israel," right? What kind of rhetoric should I be on the lookout for?
What makes this hard, is that there is no collective Jewish take on this. There are some Jews who would tell you that any criticism of Israel is inherently anti-Semitic. There are other Jews who would tell you that Jewish support for the modern state is antithetical to the values at the core of our ethics and faith.
Both of those types of Jewish thinkers follow this blog, as do Jews holding views everywhere in between.
So what I'm going to tell you isn't The Jewish Stance on this, but the stance I've developed as a Modern Jewish historian who also happens to be a Jewish person with leftist politics.
Here is a list of narratives and rhetorical patterns to watch out for:
-individuals or spaces which view jews as inherently unworthy of trust, and require them to consistently prove that they are a "Good Jew"
-rhetoric which continuously singles out Israeli human and civil rights abuses, while failing to hold other states committing equal or much larger scale abuses to the same standards
-speech which implies that the Jews can fit neatly into the role of "white colonizer"
-visual languages which super-impose Nazi imagery over Jewish symbols
-Blood Libel rhetoric, which accuses Israel of using the blood or murdered Palestinian babies for its bread, or harvesting Palestinian organs for the black market. This type of rhetoric has been circulating the western world for literal centuries, and it always ends with Jews being expelled and/or burnt at the stake.
And this is kind of where the classic "I can't define it but I know it when I see it" porn definition comes in. Sometimes someone screaming about "The Zionists" is someone deeply disturbed by, say, the frankly fascistic behavior of Israelis in West Bank Settlements. Sometimes, that person is furious that Jews are asking them to critically examine the role of any or some of the above elements in their speech regarding Israel and Israelis.
Some Jews will weaponize a lot of our traumatic past to silence other Jews, and say that by writing this I am no better than the Jewish Police who rounded up their people for the Treblinka transports. Other Jews will say that by writing any of this, I'm silencing necessary speech regarding the war crimes in Gaza and that I'm complicit in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinian civilians as a result.
But this is my basic, 101 level response, and it's not going to change.
I really, truly, appreciate your how deeply you care about grasping these issues. If you have any follow-up questions I'd be happy to answer them under similar understandings of username exclusion.

Jews were the target of the majority of hate crimes in New York City last year, according to statistics reported Monday by the NYPD.
Data compiled by the department showed that there were 345 anti-Jewish hate crimes across the city in 2024, nearly 54% of the 641 total hate crimes tallied. The next-largest category of hate crimes were those related to sexual orientation, at 78.
The number of antisemitic hate crimes in 2024 was slightly larger than in 2023, when police recorded 323 total anti-Jewish crimes. That year’s total was driven by a recorded surge in antisemitism following Hamas’ invasion of Israel and the outbreak of the Gaza war on Oct. 7 of that year. The increase in antisemitism year over year comes as the total number of hate crimes in the city decreased slightly from 2023 to 2024.
High-profile antisemitic incidents occurred last year across New York, which has the largest Jewish population in the country. They ranged from from graffiti on the home of the director of the Brooklyn Museum to a protest outside an exhibit commemorating the Oct. 7 Nova music festival massacre to an anti-Israel protester accused of threatening “Zionists” in a subway car.
On Monday, protesters outside NYU’s Tisch Hospital chanted “We don’t want no Zionists here,” which Borough President Mark Levine called “Clear antisemitism.”
The NYPD data are preliminary figures and are subject to change. Not every recorded hate crime leads to an arrest or prosecution.

The Super Bowl ad where MLK’s speechwriter asks you to please not do antisemitic hate crimes contains this shot of a Jewish man and a Hijabi woman erasing Islamophobic graffiti together. If your first response to that is to assume it’s an anti-Palestinian plot, or Zionists using media to distract the masses from the evils of the Jews. Then that means you’ve been brainwashed. Please consider logging off the internet for a while and seeing if you feel better

It's so fucking annoying that every time people advocate for Palestinians, we have to emphasise we're not being anti-semitic because of how white supremacists co-opt anti-Israel sentiment as anti-semitism (including zionists themselves). we will literally say an objective fact like, "Israeli defence forces have killed 100s of Palestinian families and that's a war crime" and motherfuckers with 10 brain cells in their entire gene pool will accuse you of hating Jewish people when a) there are Palestinian Jewish people killed and dispossessed by Israel and b) Israel is not and never has been supported by all Jewish people. I'm just no longer arguing with or educating grown tax paying adults who have fallen for Zionist and white supremacist rhetoric. I'm refusing to accommodate assholes who actually believe that advocating for a group of people with next to no water, food, safe housing, military, or electricity living in a slaughterhouse to be free is somehow oppressing anyone. Grow the fuck up. Advocating for the human rights of one oppressed group is not an adversarial action. This is real life, not tumblr in the mid 2010s.

"It’s interesting to me that the only time where we have to do this both sides-y rejection is when the victims are Jewish. When we saw a spike in anti-Asian hate crimes over the last couple of years, there was no immediate pushback that said, now you have to reject these other forms [of hate]. In fact, after George Floyd, when we were talking about Black Lives Matter, there was a clear distinction that if you responded by saying, “All Lives Matter,” that yes, that’s true that all lives matter, but if you were doing it reflexively you are denying the real pattern and problem of what was happening in the African American community."

"Today in Toronto Canada, the Jewish Defense League made a call out to disrupt a Pro-Palestinian Sidewalk protest. When zionist see Palestinian flags, they engage in anti-Palestinian racism, become abusive and violent. As depicted in the first part of the video, a zionist was tearing down Palestinian flags, while another was saying how they are proud of making Gaza “nice and flat”.  In another part of the video, while at a safe distance and peacefully recording a Live Tiktok session, a Zionist proceeded to attack a protestor. There were many other incidents where Pro-Palestinians were threatened by aggressive Zionists.
As shown in the video, their cars were keyed and their property was damaged. Multiple crimes took place today by zionists against pro-Palestinian supporters and torontopolice continue to give preferential treatment to the zionist community. Will Ford, Trudeau, Chow and all politicians across the political spectrum condemn and denounce the Anti-Palestinian racism and hate crimes that many communities across Canada have been facing?!"

My university refused to even utter the word Palestinian or anything in their singular statement (mentioning the unbearable loss that Jewish students must have experienced on October 7th). Even when approached by Palestinian students they doubled down and refused to offer any support even in the face of documented hate crimes with literal antipalestinian sentiment and violence towards palestinians and Muslims so yeah I'm sorry but right now the people suffering the most on college campuses are Palestinians first and foremost. And Palestinian students especially try to become doctors, engineers, nurses, or lawyers so the fact that they're profiting off their prestige while also completely ignoring them is the definition of anti-Palestinian.
