Always loved the idea of Broly being the non-canonical foil to Goku. Both ostracized from the Saiyan race and its culture, and patronized by their elites. Both the lost survivors of Planet Vegeta. Both encouraged to keep their true Saiyan nature hidden. Both suffered a traumatic injury that altered their psyche as a newborn. Both murdered their father in a fit. Both are the Legendary Super Saiyan. Both seem to (at least, at first) lack a tail. Both are based off of Sun Wukong.

But that's where similarities end.

Broly is dressed in jewelry and garb, imitating royalty that discarded him. Goku, on the other hand, dresses humbly in gi. Broly's the idealistic Saiyan, Goku is ironically the idealistic human. Broly was collared by his Saiyan father, Goku was sent away. Broly is selfish, Goku is selfless. Broly took joy in his patricide, Goku did not. Goku roars into his Saiyan form, but Broly literally explodes. Goku was sent away from Planet Vegeta, but Broly was ushered into himself with the decimation of the planet.

Z Broly is the anti-Goku. Broly is Goku if everything was wrong.

Future Trunks Deserves Better Ships

So fanfic with Future Trunks is very limited. But here are the pairings that I have read or seen when searching for fics in the past:

Trunks/Past 18

Trunks/Future 18

Trunks/Broly (crackship based on DBZA)

Trunks/Mai (most prominent pairing now due to DBS)

Trunks/Female OC (never read any fics with this)

I have a question: why is Trunks constantly paired with people who are WAY older than him?

Trunks is literally the good boy next door type. I can see him getting on well with a variety of women. And Toriyama or whoever decided to pair him with MAI, a woman who was a gag villain in dragon ball?? At least 18 was a fleshed-out character. My boy Future Trunks deserves better!!! Mai is literally Bulma's age or older! She could be his mom!

Out of all the ships, I think Trunks/Past 18 is the best. The age gap would be lesser compared with future 18 and past 18 has the benefit of not being responsible for Trunks' trauma. I read a fic a few weeks ago called "Butterfly Effect" that had Trunks/past 18 as the main ship and it was so good. The downside is that Krillin does not get with 18 but Krillin got another love interest in that fic and I am not a diehard Krillin/18 shipper so I hardly cared.

Trunks/future 18 is interesting. I read a great fic where the OG Trunks (the one killed by Imperfect Cell) was brought back to life and ended up marrying his future 18. They had a daughter together. I loved the character development which made their enemies to lovers journey feel satisfying. However, the issue with Future 18 being paired with Trunks is that she is half responsible for his suffering. Even if it turns out she was mind-controlled, it was still her. Plus, I have a huge distaste for the dragon balls being used to wipe Earthlings' memories so former villains (like Buu) can walk free. It's disgusting. I think Bulma or Trunks erased people's memories when the androids were dead though. But it was convenient for the ship to take off. Can't start dating 18 if you have people screaming whenever they see her and want her in jail after all. Plus, Future 18 has to be at least 16 years older than him. Ugh.

I like Trunks/Broly as a crackship. Too bad there aren't any serious fics that are completed. The only completed works seem to be porn. Anyway, this ship has issues. First the age gap again. Second, it's not a fruitful ship (pun intended). As the last protector, Trunks needs to train humans to fight and/or have Saiyan hybrid kids to teach to take up the mantle. I think you get my point about why this ship is problematic. As the last full-blooded Saiyan, it would benefit the Earth more for Broly to either meet a human female or another strong alien that could bear him kids. Imagine a hybrid with Broly's potential?! I'm pumped with excitement already as I type this!

If I were to decide the type of girl I would pair with Trunks, I would go with something like this:

A fighter like Videl. Someone with a fiery spirit with a passion to get stronger. Maybe she was traumatized by the androids and her desire to get stronger is a coping mechanism. Or maybe she just likes fighting and heard about the martial arts legends. Anyway, her journey could lead her to Trunks and he becomes her master. Training has always been a duty for Trunks. He's like Gohan in that he does not enjoy fighting. But maybe training this girl/woman could help him find fighting/training enjoyable or fun. Her passion could rub off on him and it encourages him to keep pushing his limits. She could motivate him to be better.

A girl who loves adventure like Bulma. This woman could be an alien and through shenanigans she and Trunks end up on a galaxy adventure together. Trunks has likely never travelled much and grew up in a constant warzone. I think it would be nice for Trunks to go on a fun, low-stakes adventure and meet other alien races. Maybe he could find allies/friends that could help protect Earth. Maybe he finds New Namek on the way. Maybe he finds a master to help him unlock his hybrid potential more. Trunks needs a teacher after all. It would be nice for Trunks to have a relationship with a kind of girl that helps him relax and discover his inner child. Someone he can have fun with.

A girl of service/duty. Kind of like Padme from Star Wars. Someone who understands and can empathize with his burden of protecting the Earth. Maybe she works in a nonprofit or something where she is on the front lines helping people every day. She would have grown up traumatized by the androids and lost loved ones like Trunks did. They can help each other heal as they forge a new family together.

Anyway, I did not intend this to become an essay. I just love Future Trunks and I am so disgusted with his (not) canon pairing. It's like that bastard Toriyama checked his female characters catalogue and dumped Trunks with the first one who was still single. Future Trunks deserved better and DBS will never be canon to me! At least GT left Future Trunks with his happy ending. Screw DBS and screw Mai!

One of the things that the comics retcon is turning Ursa into...well, a battered and abused housewife who was impregnated against her will (aka RAPED) by Ozai in order to produce an heir. Aside from needlessly bringing in a really triggering topic, it's also one of the things that's used against Azula. That since she's the product of Ursa's mistreatment, then clearly she's partially to blame for Ursa's horrendous living just for the crime of being born.

...which does not make Ursa look any better since she refuses to accept Azula for who she is and would rather wallow in her own pity. And blaming a child, a literal child for your misery...well, I'm just going to let someone else sum it up for me:

What are your thoughts on Tarble and Gure, as well as the 2008 OVA "Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!" more generally?

I like the idea of Tarble. Vegeta having a long-lost little brother who's never been counted on the Surviving Saiyan census because he's legit so puny and weak that Vegeta's simply never acknowledged his existence before? That's amazing. And hilarious.

Tarble is like the anti-Broly. That's great. I love it.

But it's hard to form much opinion on him and Gure one way or another because they only have like a minute of screentime in the one and only piece of Dragon Ball material they've ever shown up in.

The OVA itself is... honestly pretty mediocre in my opinion? It's definitely much more Toei Dragon Ball than Toriyama Dragon Ball. It hits a lot of the common Anime Filler checklist items. We've got:

A couple of Toei's favorite endlessly reused jokes in there.

Some fanservicey Playing the Hits callbacks that make little sense in context but DO YOU REMEMBER DO YOU REMEMBER.

Characters forgetting how their own powers work and needing to be told things that are honestly pretty basic at this point.

A dragged out fight where the protagonists softball the fight and let themselves get shitstomped for no reason, because Toei thinks it's more dramatic for them to be on the backfoot and desperately struggling against dire stakes even if they could just stop losing any time they want.

All the stuff that sours me on a lot of Anime Dragon Ball.

So, overall, I think the concept is pretty sound but the execution leaves much to be desired.

7 Worst Dragon Ball Characters (objective)

Honorable mention, Master Roshi. So here's the deal, I actually like Roshi. I actually like Roshi A LOT when he's being the offbeat martial arts master, but for the most part he's a serial sex offender, and the anime adds even more sexual assault for lulz.

Oolong

So y'know how I basically said there were aspects to Roshi's personality I really enjoyed, which is why he's not on the list proper? That's not the case with Oolong. There are definitely aspects to Oolong I like -- I like Piggy from Journey to the West and I think it's hilarious that Toriyama dressed him (and Mai, for some reason) like Chairman Mao. I also have to credit him with saving the world, although idk how Pilaf would have actually held onto his world empire with people like Goku around. Regardless, his character is another vehicle for sexual assault humor.

And yes, the English dub fucked up and made him sound like an adult. The joke is that he's a child that acts like a perverted adult, but because he's a child, he's just kidnapping girls to clean his house and be his mom, basically (Bulma pretty much even adopts him). Sexual assault humor is still sexual assault humor, though, so Oolong sucks

Garlic Jr.

Who stans a poser? In DBZ Abridged, they rip on Lord Slug for being EXACTLY King Piccolo, but the only difference between Slug and Garlic Jr. is that Lord Slug knew his place well enough to stay out of the anime.

Lemme start tho with the things I actually like about this guy. 1) he's a demon, I think. Toriyama introduced the concept with King Piccolo, backtracked, then reintroduced it with Dabura. Dragon Ball Xeno Heroes or w/e later realized this was free real estate and expanded on the idea to the point of nausea, but until then, Garlic and his henchmen and Dabura were your only demons, if that's something you found dope.

Other than this, Garlic Jr. steals Pilaf's design, but instead of remaining a lil' gremlin, he goes the filler route and beefs up like a Broly. He has a past connection with Kami like King Piccolo and successfully uses the Dragon Balls like King Piccolo. He then uses the Jr. like Piccolo. Get your own fucking thing. ALL YOU HAVE IS BEING THE SON OF KAMI'S RIVAL

And what really gets me is that he would be an okay filler villain if he wasn't just a chimera of better, actually canon characters, but as he is, the only things I like about his movie and arc have nothing to do with him.

Fwiw this is the only character on this list that's filler/not a part of Toriyama's original run. If this included GT, then there would be nothing but GT. As far as Super goes, I like the characters or at least their concepts (looking at you Zamasu), and the shit part is in the execution.

Spopovich

He and Yamu serve to showcase Babidi's power of mind control, but in doing so we're forced to witness the most pointlessly brutal, one-sided beatdown in all of Dragon Ball. I think the anime even devoted an entire episode to this ffs

We later learn that you have to already be a prat to fall under Babidi's powers, so there's nothing even tragic about his brainwashing and ultimate demise. He sucked before, he sucks now, he's a bad character.

Idasam

First off, it really doesn't make sense that a kid's division was introduced, does it? Most of the top fighters in the World Martial Arts Tournament were underage

Ok ok. As I made this list I began to realize there weren't a lot of characters in Dragon Ball that I actually hated. Some I definitely liked less than others, but few were so bad that I would remove them if I could. This chick is definitely one of them tho.

The Anti-Chi-Chi, Idasam raised two little brats that ig she loves and supports, which is the only thing she has that going for her. Besides that, she's mean to Bulma and even tried to physically assault her until the Mother of our Saviour Chi-Chi stepped in

Pirate Robot

Admit it, you thought he was filler. He looks like Third Form Frieza fucked some Saiyan armor. I've seen people try to salvage pirate robot by saying he's Android 2, but no, he's not, General Blue had no idea about this underwater pirate cave, and it doesn't make sense for Dr. Gero to squirrel away a dragon ball down here. Sometimes the things you love just disappoint you

Super Buu

I'm not sure this if this is a controversial opinion, but Super Buu is trash, his arc is trash, and everything he does will be done better later by Janemba in a fucking filler movie.

Before his introduction, Gohan failed, Vegeta failed and failed and failed, Gotenks fucked around and found out, and Goku wasted his time on a useless transformation like Future Trunks did in the Cell Saga (if he had been alive, Gohan would be trained and he would have realized SSJ3 wasn't a real transformation). Then Hercule came along and WON. The champ did it, he beat Majin Buu (with kindness). And that's great. If the Buu arc ended there, it would've still had several loose ends, but Z has loose ends as it is (imo another saga was needed to complete Gohan's character arc).

But then Toriyama (I'd rather blame his editors, but I've never seen anyone credit Super and Kid Buu to editorial interference) Ctrl-Z's Hercule's victory and we get Super Buu, a Perfect Cell wannabe that does nothing but crack his neck and murder Marin and everyone else too ig with his admittedly dope human extinction wave.

I have nothing but issues with this guy. His arc is way too long, his design is generically cool like a filler character, he steals Cell's powerset, he steals everybody's clothes, and he murders most of the cast while having little to no personality, so I can't even hate him for it

Can't bend anything when you can even use your hands. Perhaps it was a bit much, but... if Pippy was sure the other wouldn't be too quick to leave her alone, perhaps pain would be the best teacher for someone like this. "Hmm, I don't have magic, so perhaps her abilities wouldn't work on me?" Might be a bit of an issue if it did, though he was clearly faster and stronger, so concern was minimal.

I don't even get why Broly is so popular? He's not interesting, just badly-written, one-denominational insane character with so much power. Uh so people just like him because he has so much power? This is so stupid and shallow reason.

That’s why.This character was introduced at a time when people here in the States had yet to even see the original series. This character was endemic of everything the loud batch of 10-14 year old boys loved about the series.He was insane.He was unstoppableHe was loud, flashy, buffHis power seemed to be hinted in the dub to be unlimited, that he grew stronger the more he fought. (Similar to how the Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets.)And that’s why people loved him, embraced him. It’s why so many are more willing to accept SSJ4 over any of the “god” forms; hell, the second that form was announced, people started on fanart that had him as some golden SSJ4 variant with some super “rad” armor or some shiz. It’s all a lot of folks care about, tbh. ‘s why they say Super has zero redeeming qualities; they don’t care about it being more in-line with Toriyama’s way of doing things, the retention of the humor, the character development, that anyone besides Goku or Vegeta (or any Saiyan) gets any development. Nah, they want that flash, that violence, those ever-expanding muscles back. They want it to advance to being grimdark, like a super powered Berserk. Hell, just look at half the fan projects an animations, what do they revolve around? Broly represents that to them. Ironically, he also represents every flaw people claim to find in the series itself. Go figure.But yeah…pretty much why.

I’ve been waiting a while to address this since the initial allegations have come out, mostly to wait and see how Tumblr reports about this and if they put Monica, Jamie and Chris on blast like they did with Vic but its apparent that its not gonna happen.

Let me say this: These people have harassed, threatened and downright tried to take away the platforms and voice, the very things all these people on Tumblr claimed Vic did and not one person who wasn’t already on Vic’s side has spoken out about what has come out in the spotlight and I can’t say I’m surprised but I’m still disappointed. 

With that being said, let me give my followers who may not have been keeping up with the case the rundown:

- Funimation DID NOT do a second investigation on the allegations and the first investigation came up inconclusive and this was BEFORE VIC WAS OFFICIALLY HIRED TO VOICE BROLY IN DBS: BROLY which is why he was greenlit to do it in the first place. But Monica, Chris and perhaps even Sean Schemmel (or whatever) used their influence at Funimation to fire Vic without a second investigation. 

- Despite claims, NONE of the allegations against Vic have been proven. No one has gone to the police and there is even evidence that those rumors that you guys have been “hearing about for years” were all from previous attempts by Monica, Chris Sabat, Jamie Marchi and many others (including Monica’s fiance Ron Toye and his flunkie, Shane) to ruin Vic’s career. Yes there have been MANY attempts to ruin his reputation that even predate the #MeToo movement. 

- Vic has hired a lawyer, his name is Ty Beard of the Beard & Harris law firm located in Texas where Vic lives, and where companies like Funimation and Rooster Teeth are based and many people have already been served papers (Ron Toye being the only one confirmed but if he got them, the other must’ve got them too, they’re just not saying anything).

- Since Vic hired a lawyer he has made ONE statement and that was to the FANS who kept supporting him through this and this was weeks ago. On the other hand, Monica has threatened people with the FBI, Homeland Security, and Jamie has said she wanted Vic DEAD on Twitter just because people have asked for proof on their claims and allegations. 

- Marzgurl is involved, if some of my followers don’t know who that is, she was a former employee of Channel Awesome who actually used to date a proven pedophile (Jewwario) and has even been said to have contributed to him grooming minors and protected him even after allegations (with proof) came out about him among all the other terrible shit that has come out about Channel Awesome. But its been confirmed that she was one of the main one spreading the rumors about Vic sexually assaulting people while she herself has been known to protect a proven pedophile.

- There’s a lawyer named Nick Rekieta on Youtube who has received papers regarding Ron Toye reporting him to the Minnesota bar for his “unlawful conduct” even though all he did was report on the info that he’s gotten on the case. He’s never claimed to be professionally or personally involved in Vic’s case nor is he representing Vic. 

- There is suspected evidence through texts, Twitter DMs, calls and emails, Monica, Jamie, and Chris Sabat have been on a blackmail spree with these conventions. Threatening walk outs even speaking for other VAs who have nothing to do with the situation (saying they’ll walk out too even though they never said they would) among other things. This has been going on since the “scandal” came out and gained attention. 

- In the past few days, it has come out that specifically Monica Rial, Chris Sabat along with Ron Toye and Shane have been literally threatening the owner of Kameha Con with walk outs and criminal charges if he allowed Vic to come back to the convention. They even went as far as to blow up this man’s phone for 3 HOURS STRAIGHT with various rants and threats. This is ILLEGAL.

And to all the people who after knowing ALL of this still defend these people because “uwu victims must be believed!”

Vic isn’t homophobic, he’s supported the LGBTQ community before and he’s not homophobic if he doesn’t agree with your shitty non canon yaoi ships and he doesn’t have to sign your shitty yaoi doujins (in fact I think his contract says he can’t sign or promote non canon material). Even if he was homophobic, THAT’S NOT ILLEGAL. Its called FREEDOM OF RELIGION, EXPRESSION AND SPEECH. And you can’t silence people, as long as he’s not harming anyone physically or inciting violence against someone, he can believe what he wants and you have no legal capacity to do anything about it and if you do try to do anything about it, HE has legal cause of action just like he has with this case. 

Vic isn’t automatically evil because he’s a straight white male and Monica/Jamie aren’t angels because they’re women. 

YOU CAN’T RUIN SOMEONE’S LIFE WITHOUT PROOF. VIC COULD’VE COMMITTED SUICIDE FROM THIS BULLSHIT. ANYONE COULD’VE KILLED THEMSELVES IF THE CAREER THEY’VE BUILT FOR 20 YEARS WENT UP IN SMOKE BECAUSE SOME BITCHES DIDN’T LIKE THAT THEY COULDN’T MANIPULATE HIM.
