BIG MOUTH // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb: 8 Benim puanım: 10
Drama: Big Mouth
Hangul:
Director: Oh Choong-Hwan
Writer: Ha Ram
Date: 2022
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Lee Jong-Suk, Lim Yoon-A, Kim Joo-Hun, Yang Kyung-Won, Jang Hyuk-Jin, Kwak Dong-Yeon, Lee Ki-Young, Oh Eui-Sik, Jung Jae-Sung
Her bölüm diziye tekrar tekrar yükseldim.
Kwak Dong-Yeon’u her gördüğüm dizide mutlu oluyorum.
Romance is a Bonus Book dizisinde beğenmiştim. W: Two Worlds Apart dizinde ise hiç beğenmemiştim. Lim Yoon-A’yı ilk The K2 dizisinde izlemiştim. Bu ikinci kez onunla karşılaşışım. K2 yorumumu okuyanlar bilir ki, oyuncuyu yerden yere vurmuştum. Bütün sözlerimi geri alıyorum. Buradaki rolü, oyunculuğu enfesti. Ona da ayrıca bayıldım. BTS grubundan V ile yakın arkadaş olduklarını öğrendiğimde ise hemen kabul edip kucak açtım. Artık kendisi sevdiğimiz bir oyuncudur, nokta.
Herkes çok başarılıydı. Her detay ince düşünülmüştü.
OST:
Justhis - Brand New

MrBeast:
Welcome to your final test, I'm MrBeast.
We can scrap the 'S' cuz I've never missed a beat!
You had to cut from honey under threat of a gun blast;
When I had a cut from Honey, that's another check that I'm gonna cash!
You're coming last, Number 1 is Jimmy; only dub you have is horribly written.
You're accomplished 'cuz you fought the opposition and became the best,
But the consequences that you've got to live with
Is you paved their deaths all to pay your debt, I applaud you Gi-Hun!
In the diss game, you won't get rich.
I'm like your momma: I'm dead sick!
Then check the gaming channel, millions of children watch it.
How'd you win all that Won, kid, but not custody of one kid?
Did ya think you'd get her back with that lighter you bought her?
You're playing tug-o-war with your ex, but the rope is your daughter (Ooh!)
So stupid, Sang-woo showed you the light; you didn't go to SNU, that's right.
If the task was last to get backstabbed by a pal, you wouldn't make it through the night!
When I feast I don't need a suit and tie, wrapping with gold like the food I try!
Utter a word then you will die, save those subs for PewDiePie! Seong Gi-hun:
So this is the next test they'll make us fight in for survival?
But instead of a kiddie game, we'll be playing this manchild? (Hmm?)
Your career's fragile like glass, I will smash it if you push me.
Made your fortune from subscribers, now give them their fucking cookies!
You've done all this good, you fed lives in need right 'till they get by each time,
Gave islands, sweet rides, let high trees thrive, set headlines being nice when you spread vibes.
Teens hype it and then buy MrBeast line, so you make ten times what you leave guys,
Only ever "moving" when you're in set sight of a keen child, like an anti-red light green light!
Don't talk about loyalty, you don't get any!
You're like "I Spent At Least Ten Thousand Dollars Renting People Out To Pretend To Be Friends With Me"!
I wondered why VIPs had to hide their face behind plastic,
Now that I see this bastard, I get what the point of the mask is! MrBeast:
I just replaced all of Gi-Hun's surviving friends with Legos!
Uhm, Jimmy… there aren't any Legos.
(Vine boom sound effect) (Hahahahahahaha!)
For a 'critique on greed', it seems ironic,
Your show sold out like it's stock from shopmrbeast.com, bitch! Seong Gi-hun:
(Yuh!) You spent 24 hours in a bunker, another 24 inside of a fake prison,
And over 50 hours in a coffin; could you do us all a big solid and stay in it?
Spending a minute with the Jeff Bezos for daycare kiddies is a challenge that I couldn't be paid to be in.
You can't make good lines, I won't stay within them; like Jake the Viking, I'm straight up leaving! MrBeast:
Let's hope that you didn't bet all of your money on winning this fight now,
Cuz a lot like your job, if that happened, you're likely to die in my fire and strike out.
Join Team Seas and clean that garbage past you deem so awful!
You lost everything to a pensioner who lost his fucking marbles! Front Man:
I make the calls in this torture-ridden place,
You only got balls in an Orbeez giveaway.
It's a real manhunt, you don't got the courage to beat me,
Go hide in your nerdy Dream streams.
We've got more beef than your burger meat, Beast.
Plotting more seeds in your girl than Team Trees!
Pictured a world where equality rules,
That's not just a pic you can fly to the moon.
Got no firepower against my roster,
Don't you "identify" as an attack helicopter?
You said hi to your brother with a brand new channel,
I said bye to my brother with a mag of ammo!
So go cry to your momma in an ad to pack dough!
You'd ditch your morals to put your hand on Lambos!
Can't handle the truth: if you run out of money, you run out of your personality too.
Out of 100% of your viewers, nobody watches your channel for you!

I haven't posted much about Squid Game since I started really getting into it, because I was marathoning the whole show in a couple of days, and where would I even start? Every episode brings some fresh new hell, gradually ratcheting up the tension so that no matter what you saw in the last episode you're not going to be comfortable in the next one. Seong Gi-hun, my beloved, is a richly textured failson who has just enough resourcefulness to keep himself out of Death's jaws long enough for someone else to bail him out and I love that for him. I love how the show depicts, in more or less metaphorical terms, how the rich use the tantalizing prospect of class mobility to manipulate the poor into self-destruction, allowing just enough people to actually make it through that the rest willingly throw themselves into the machine that takes their lives.
I do got... some issues. I think it was pretty weak that the show just went ahead and depicted characters being sexist without addressing the problem in a meaningful way, and the way that Ali was depicted with practically childlike levels of daftitude felt like an insult to migrant workers.
The show also perpetuates the Bourgeoisie Degeneracy stereotype - the myth that the extremely wealthy are evil because their riches somehow cause them to become immensely bored, pushing them into increasingly depraved behaviors in pursuit of stimulation. For a brief rundown on why this myth is problematic, there's two main reasons. The first is that it's simply wrong; yes, wealth does create corruption, but in significantly subtler and more boring ways than this. The second is that the myth is constantly used by bigots in leftist circles to launder their bigotry under the guise of leftist theory - claiming that feminism, anti-racism, being LGBTQIA, whathaveyou, is an invention of Rich People With Too Much Time On Their Hands and not something that actually requires support or accommodation in their worldview.
(By the way, there's one character in Squid Game who displays sexual interest in other men. He's an immensely wealthy man who watches poor people kill themselves for fun. It really is a low point for the show.)
But with that being said, I did enjoy the show immensely. Emotionally, it's not exactly a rollercoaster, but it's definitely very intense. The acting was superb, particularly O Yeong-su's performance as an unsettlingly cheerful old man who has decided playing a terrible murder game beats waiting around to die of a brain tumor, but really everyone was great. And the story itself goes to so many places emotionally, keeping you invested in the characters even while they drop off like flies - a particularly impressive feat from my perspective, given that killing off 90% of the cast after I've already gotten attached to them is normally a dealbreaker for me. But damn if the show doesn't make every death count, bringing something new and meaningful to the table, even for characters we've only known for a short while.
So... yeah, that's my feelings on Squid Game in a nutshell. I could go into more detail (Oh Il-nam my... beloved? beloathed? all of the above?) but that would risk getting into spoiler territory, which I don't really want to cover in a post extolling the show's watchability. Because it is extremely watchable; it's no exaggeration to say that I'm really only into "murder game" stories when they double as biting political commentary, and Squid Game absolutely nails it. Though I don't know how they're going to make a second season work after killing off all those blorbos.

Squid Game
So, I finally budged and watched it in a day after procrastinating it for far too long and here’s a quick summary of my thoughts on the characters and the results of the games.
This contains major spoilers.
Seong Gi-Hun (456)
I wasn’t expecting to a perfect main character given the shit included in the show, but I dislike this man with a passion. Before, during, and after the games. He was a crappy, selfish, and inconsiderate son and father who gets far too much credit than he deserves. I see a lot of commentators saying he tried, but where? And the bare minimum should never be accepted when having to care for a child. A child so used to being emotionally responsible for the adult that they accept whatever scraps they get and accept it with a smile only to console the parent.
He literally had one job in the first episode. And let’s just pretend his intentions were to gain more money for his child’s birthday. The same birthday he had to be reminded of btw. He earned it and rather than making his way to get what she actually wanted, he fucked around and ran into the loan sharks. OH. And this is all after stealing more of what little his mother had to gamble it all away.
ANYWAYS
Then he gets into the games and suddenly has all the compassion in the world for people he hardly even knows. Then after the first game, he left after not being able to go through with the terrifying stakes, which is normal. But after getting his ass handed to him by his mother (as she should), he came right back knowing what there was to lose should he be eliminated.
And he had a lot of nerve to judge and berate Sangwoo for pushing the glass worker as if he didn’t take advantage of Il-Nam’s condition to win the marble game as if it wasn’t the same thing. He sent the man to what we believed was his death and then acted as if what Sangwoo did was the absolute worst thing in the world.
And then after winning the games making promises to people who got him to where he was, he wastes an entire year not touching the money people died for him to have and went back to living the same shitty life he had before. He didn’t deserve it at all. And finally, after having the chance to reconnect with the daughter he had made more false promises to, he dips and decides to somehow return and expose the games he barely made it out of himself.
-10/10
Cho Sangwoo (218)
Actually didn’t care much for him tbh.
Which is weird considering he’s a main character and contributed a lot to the plot.
I will say that I admired his ambition and what he was willing to do to win. He was the most cunning, calculated, and intelligent player and I respect that.
However, I will never forgive him for giving me two emotional breakdowns. And I get it, there’s no point in allies in a game where only one comes out alive, but to trick Ali like that was stone cold, man.
Then when Saebyeok was already dying, to just slit her neck like that was monstrous. Given the amount of blood she lost and the lack of color in her face, she was clearly dying and he just did the absolute most for no reason.
His debt was entirely his fault so the crying and sob story got no sympathy for me, especially when he was set up with enormous potential as the pride of his town.
6/10 because he’s hot.
Kang Saebyeok (067)
One of three characters I’d have preferred to be the actual main character. And when I say main character, I mean who the plot revolves around and/or is the intended winner.
Can’t name a single flaw because she didn’t have any.
Never loved anything more in my life.
Mourned her more than my own relatives.
Her story was incomplete and I can’t help but bawl over her brother feeling truly abandoned by her in a country full of people putting him down for no reason.
She faked her death and made it out with her wife to Jeju Island. It’s canon. The corpse and fire weren’t real.
1000000/10
Ji-yeong (240)
Another amazing potential main character because the way she stole the show in like two episodes? Epic.
She didn’t say much but her presence was always noticed. The little that she did say always carried a lot of impact given how much we’d learn when she did.
And it broke my fucking heart to see her enter with an apathetic attitude, determined not to care given her history, just for her to slip up towards the end and cry over what could have been.
In so little moments, she lost her past and her future and I’ll never be the same after realizing that.
She’s actually sipping mojitos in Jeju Island rn. She sends the best postcards.
10000000/10
Han Mi-nyeo (212)
I may be one of the few people who actually didn’t hate her. She was a little crazy but she made the show surprisingly funny.
She may not have won, but she wen’t out with a bang.
7/10
Ali Abdul (199)
My precious angel capable of no wrong.
He had the purest heart and the best intentions and his only mistake was trusting his closest friend.
10000000/10
Jang Deok-su (101)
Honestly, I didn’t hate him as much as I thought I would either.
Didn’t love him but he knew what to do to get to the next level and get what he needed.
His relationship with ole girl was like the funniest shit ever.
He’s much like Sangwoo but a bit more open about his shit.
5/10 because he’s kinda hot.
The Salesman
My husband.
I’m kinda curious of how far his involvement goes with the games.
He could slap me anytime.
Seriously.
Game or no game.
I’m with whatever.
I might have a gag reflex but I can get rid of it.
10000000000000/10
Hwang In-ho (The Front Man)
Another potential main character because wtfffffff.
I was already intrigued because of the growing mask kink but knowing what we know, I wanna know how he ended up so high in the games.
Like was it voluntary?
Was he that much of an asset to them?
How much does that shit get to him especially after possibly killing his own brother?
10/10 because he’s hot and damaged.
Hwang Jun-ho
The actual love of my life and my currently living lover.
He was so smart and dedicated to finding his brother only to discover something far worse. I think it would have been better had he been actually dead.
But to know what he carelessly sent people through over and over must have fucked him all the way up.
I’d satisfy him anytime.
Whenever, wherever, however, it’s up to him.
100000000000/10
Also, overall, I only dislike Gi-hun more than the actual villains because while they were crappy people, they owned that shit. They never played the victim and never judged people for what they were all doing. He really sees himself as some kind of hero and it just irritates me when he’s not done enough to earn that shit. And I kinda get it, the game is fucked up but knowing what he scraped out of, he might not make it out alive. These are powerful people and you risked never seeing your own child after A YEAR for shit you might not even make it out of. Make that shit make sense. He smiled in one scene and the fandom rushed to make him some innocent little bean like huh???

i will say one more thing about squid game which is that i seriously don't understand how so many people think that ending the show with gi-hun helping out the families of his besties and then washing his hands of the brutal games he participated in completely and then simply walking into the sunset with his daughter would be a more satisfying conclusion than what we got. giving gi-hun an easy to digest happy ending in which he achieves exactly what he wanted all along would have almost validated the existence of the games in the narrative, given the impression that it was at least 'worth it' in some way, and that is really the last thing you should think after watching a show like that
#i get that it felt incomplete but having gi-hun sacrifice his own wishes in order to try to stop the games was much more coherent#not only with the anti-capitalist theme of the show but with gi-hun's character. he was a kind person in the games but not a selfless one#meaning he genuinely didn't want to harm anyone but still acted in self-preservation above all else when pressed#but by the end of it he regained the drive to fight for the collective - like he used to when he was a unionized factory worker#squid game

'Sangwoo was the most realistic character.' 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Using your mother's house and store as collateral when you're in debt is so 'realistic'.
Not telling your childhood best friend to pick a different shape because you know his life could very well be at stake and there is no cost to yourself for it is so 'realistic'.
Gaining the trust of a person who has been mistreated in your country only to stab him in the back when everyone else was playing fair is so 'realistic'.
Killing a woman who was already going to die is so 'realistic'.
Girl bye. You can like him all you want, I know you're thirsty for him, I don't care. But he's still a bad guy and he's not realistic. He's literally just Deok-Su but sneaky and smart about it.

First of all, I totally agree with your points regarding Sang-woo. When I was watching the marbles episode and I realized what he was gonna do to Ali, I legit pointed to the screen and said, “Fuck you, Cho Sang-woo. Fuck you!” And I was almost driven to tears when Ali realized he had been betrayed. My mans deserved BETTER. He should’ve escaped with Gi-hun and Sae-byeok and lived a happy life with his wife and child.
Second, my favorite would definitely be Gi-hun. His character growth was so interesting to watch. Not to mention how heartwarming he was! Also, the way he truly worked to keep his morality intact and not succumb to the corruption of the games was something else, man. I loved the compassion and concern he showed for others. Sang-woo really didn’t deserve a friend like Seong Gi-hun.
When it comes to the confrontation with Sang-woo before the dinner, Gi-hun absolutely DELIVERED. The way he stood his ground if the face of Sang-woo’s low, hurtful digs was so admirable, and the way he actually used Sang-woo’s privilege to undermine him was amazing. I also really loved how Gi-hun twisted his constant praise of Sang-woo being an SNU graduate into a jab meant to cut deep.
And don’t get me STARTED on how Gi-hun literally transitioned into god mode for the final game. My mans knew playtime was over, and he made sure Sang-woo knew it, too. My favorite part of the fight was when Gi-hun picked up sand and threw it in Sang-woo’s face right as the latter was telling him to “cut the crap.”
At that point, I realized how much Gi-hun had grown from a bumbling gambling addict who didn’t know left from right to a fucking badass. The fact that even then, when he had seen his childhood friend turn into a man with no conscience, he couldn’t bear to kill Sang-woo speaks volumes about his character at its core. It shows that, even when his friend had killed for his own gain, he still didn’t succumb to the corruption. He still didn’t kill, even when it would have been justifiable at that point.
I can’t wait to see what happens with Gi-hun in the next season! Perhaps he’ll become even more of a badass as he takes down the games with his newfound knowledge and wealth (though a part of me wishes he could’ve seen Ga-yeong first and made sure she knows he hasn’t forgotten about her).
My opinion on Squid Game Characters
This is very diferent from my regular content but I watched this show 3 days ago and I enjoyed the fuck out of it so here we goooo!!
!!!Spoilers ahead!!!
Seong Gi-hun
Why the hell is the main character of the show underrated??? I literally don't get it.
He is the most realistic character in the show.
I know for a fact that if he is one of your favorite characters, you have daddy issues. Saying this from my own experience.
He is literally so sweet and huggable?? I love him so much<3
He cares so much for the people around him.
Extremely emotionally intelligent.
Attractive asf.
He struggles a lot, but deep down hes a good person because of his love for his daughter and his upbringing.
HE LITERALLY HAS THE WARMEST LOOK!?!? HIS EYES ARE SO KIND AND HIS SMILE IS SO SOFT.
once again I question.... Why the hell is he underrated??
The people who stan him are the coolest istg.
Am I the only one who has this internal struggle of sometimes seeing him in a fatherly way and other times simply finding him hot?? Maybe I have issues but whatever ig.
His dynamic with Sae-byeok is so sweet, he defienetly became a father figure of sorts for her.
Sang-woo didn't deserve his friendship with Gi-Hun.
I will defend this character with my life.
Sae-byeok
She rightfully gets the attention she deserves.
I literally fell in love with her at first sight, she is so pretty.
I love her to pieces.
Shes my literal girlfriend.
I love her character development so much.
HER HAIR?? I LOVE HER HAIR SO FUCKING MUCH IT LOOKS SO FLUFFY.
She had some great badass moment throughout the show, especially in the beggining.
Her motivation was one of the most valid one out of all of them.
My girl just wanted to bring her mom back from North Korea and for her brother to get out of the orphanage.
I'm happy she managed to survive many of the games but she deserved to win alongside Gi-hun.
Someone give this girl a hug.
I wish Gi-hun could've reasured her about the promise.
It makes me so sad that she got killed by a calculated and cold person. I wish that she could've died peacefully.
We all saw her in that suit right??? She looked gorgeous.
I also am so glad that her character was never wierdly sexualized in the show.
She deserves the world.
Ali Abdul
For starters, I absolutley adore this man.
He was so hard-working and dedicated himself for his little family. His boss was a dick who treated him horribly.
His hair is also extremely fluffy I love it sm.
He is extremely loyal and has a heart of gold. Sadly, that was what eventually killed him.
He was too much of a good human being for this cruel and selfish game.
His introduction was so cool!?!? He single handedly saved Gi-hun's life.
He was strong enough to survive 3 very hard and life-threatening games, it's sad that his good heart and pure trust was what killed him.
The actor did a fantastic job with Ali, I hope to see him in other projects soon.
He loved his family so much.
Ali was so considerate of other people??for example, when Sang-woo wanted him in his team, Ali looked at Gi-hun first to make sure that it was okay for him to accept without hurting anyones feelings.
The only flaw this man has was being too naive.
He is so pretty I love him so much.
He was literally such an easy character to get attached to.
I also loved the South Asian representation in K-drama media!?!? I am not South Asian myself but I personally believe it was very strong rep compared to other K-dramas!!
I literally cried so much when he died, I was full on sobbing. My mom kept calling me dramatic for it lol.
He should've won in the marble game.
Ji-Yeong
WE ONLY GET TO KNOW HER FOR TWO EPISODES BUT I IMMEDIETLY LOVED HER.
She is so fucking cute.
I love her hair and make-up sm.
She has such a carefree attitude I loved it.
Is it kind of concerning that I relate to some aspects of her backstory....?
Her commentary on religion was chefs kiss.
I wish we got to see more of her before her death.
She deserved to have a normal family and childhood.
I love how she spoke her mind with ease, including contreversial topics.
She didn't deserve to be in jail for killing her abusive father who literally killed her mother!!!
"Thank you...! For playing with me..."
Her and Sae-byeok deserved to go to Jeju island and have a girls night.
Can we talk about how selfless this girl was? She literally sacrificed herself for a person she met a few days ago.
Her smile right before she died made me cry so hard.
Joon-ho
He is so attractive... that was literally the first thing I thought when I first saw him lmfao.
Nah but besides that he is also very cool!?!? The way he infiltrated the Squid Game facilities with such ease was very intresting to watch.
The moment between him and the vip made me gag, the vip was so gross for that and im glad Joon-Ho put him in his place.
HOW TF DID HIS PHONE BATTERY LAST SO LONG WHEN HE NEVER EVEN CHARGED IT!?!?
His character was done so dirty in the end, he tried so hard to bring his brother back just for his brother to shoot him.
Call me delusional but I still do not think that he is actually dead?? We didn't actually see him die and there is a possibility he could've survived the fall since it was in the ocean and he only got shot in the shoulder.
He was strong asf, both mentally and physically.
I really enjoyed how he was pretty awkward at first when he was undercover but then he managed to adjust better overtime.
In general I hope we get to see more of him if we do get a season 2.
Cho Sang-woo
Most of his stans annoy me, im sorry.
I hate how their argument to justify his actions is that he is "realistic".
Just because a character is selfish and a bad person at core doesn't make him realistic... Sheesh y'all make me loose hope in humanity sometimes.
Sang-woo has been selfish from the very beggining, he literally stole money from clients!!
Theres nothing realistic about setting up your bestfriend to certain death in the second game like....? He was willing to go that far already?
He killed Ali without feeling any sort of guilt. He literally only flinched and acted like nothing happened, which could be blamed on the writing, but it also shows where his morals lie.
There was seriously no need for him to kill Sae-byeok, she was already injured enough, what was the point of killing her so cruely?
He literally killed the man who helped him in the glass game the moment that he wasn't any use of him.
I actually found him much more dangerous than Deok-su who was atleast transperant about his actions.
The actor did an amazing job and I love the guy who plays him!
ALSO I HATE HIS CHARACTER BUT I WILL SAY THAT HE IS ATTRACTIVE.
And I must admit the character is a very well-written and intresting one, but he is someone whos actions cannot be fully justified, or even fully understood.
Jang Deok-Su
Do I hate him? Yes.
Do I think that without him the show would be less engaging? Yes.
I find him a very intruguring character, I actually see him as a reflection of Sang-woo of sorts.
We do not talk about the bathroom scene.
I found his relationship with Mi-nyeo funny, im sorry my humor is literally that bad.
The actor actually played the part perfectly! I actually appreciate the amount of work he put into this character.
Also the actor is literally a sweetheart who posts fan edits and pictures of his cats. If you send him any death threats I swear to god-
HE HAD HIS FUNNY MOMENTS ALRIGHT?? HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS WERE ALWAYS ON POINT.
But in general, his character was obviously someone I heavily disliked but also someone who was enjoyable nonetheless.
Annnnd thats a wrap for the characters I wanted to talk about!! Thank you for sticking with me til the end. Who is your favorite character in Squid Game and why? I would love to know!<3

So Squid Game emotionally kicked my ass (like everyone else lol) and though there’s essays worth of things to say about how it conveys its anti-capitalist message, I’m currently hooked on the order of the games and how that feeds into the illusion of choice.
The first two games, “Red Light, Green Light” and the dalgona candy, keep players separate. Everyone is out for themselves and it’s easy(er) to believe that this constructed world is actually “fair.” It certainly appears that way at first glace — everyone has the chance to cross the finish line, everyone gets their own candy — provided you ignore things like the hundreds of people starting in the back (something that the story draws attention to during the glass stepping stones), or that choosing a shape is meaningless if you don’t know what you’re choosing it for. So you’re either at the whim of luck (a “luck” orchestrated by the system), or you manage to manipulate the system itself: Sae-byeok piggybacks off of Mi-nyeo’s plan to smoke and telling Sang-woo who manages to piece it all together. Three people working to secure a single, slight advantage for one. The idea isn’t to play the game “fair,” as the Front Man insists when he kills the doctor, because the game was never fair to begin with. The system isn’t fair. The only real concern, when operating within it, is whether you can bend the rules without getting caught.
Notably though, Sang-woo doesn’t share the advantage he’s found, even though at this stage of the game he has no reason not to. What sets him apart as the most ruthless is not his willingness to kill to ensure his own safety (such as when he pushes the man towards the end), but rather his willingness to withhold help even when helping others won’t hurt him. He sees this as the competition it is right from the start, resulting in a more guarded approach that most others need a few days to develop. Right now though, the individual nature of these games means that people can exploit others if they wish, but they also have the freedom to assist. Ali catches Gi-hun despite the risk that they could both fall. Mi-nyeo shares her lighter despite the risk that she’ll be caught. We could argue that in some cases, specifically Mi-nyeo’s, these choices are made with the hope of securing future benefits, but that doesn’t erase the act itself. The structure of these games are rigged, but they still allow wiggle room for the characters to act as they will, be it for good (lighter), for ill (withholding info), or some ambiguous choice between the two (you can hide behind others to avoid the motion sensor).
“Tug of War” changes things by increasing the threat. It’s a weird thing to say given that we started with a massacre, but both of the previous games carried the possibility that everyone could survive. Unlikely, but possible. It’s possible for everyone to cross the finish line. It’s possible for everyone to remove their shape. It’s not possible for both “Tug of War” teams to win. Suddenly, death is inevitable for half of the contestants, which introduces that Us vs. Them mentality. Teams are an asset here and the Front Man orchestrates that by withholding food and encouraging the riot, ensuring that teams formed long before they had any idea they’d be playing against one another. Everyone had already secured allies before that first night, whether that’s our team of five, the thugs, or a husband and wife duo who just won’t separate. Now, it’s no longer the players against the system, but rather the players against each other. The system turns us on one another, which is always handy for those who orchestrated the game in the first place. You can’t fight them when you’re busy fighting one another and we see that in other, interesting ways throughout the show. Like how the doctor starts harvesting the corpses of the other players to give himself a boost, or how Deok-Su is ready to hijack one of the vans until his man betrays him. At a certain point, the system ensures that, in order to survive, you’re too busy fighting one another for the remaining scraps to worry about dismantling what caused this situation in the first place.
Which brings us to the marbles. Sure, you’ve been fighting others, but they’re bad, right? Those guys were violent from the get-go. Those others are too weak; no way they’ll make it to the end. The community has divided and shrunk, but your community — your team — is still good and familiar and worth saving as a whole. You might be willing to sacrifice others, but that thinking doesn’t extend to the little family you’ve built through trauma and protection. Helping the whole also helps you (Sang-woo’s tripping trick), so why wouldn’t you be kind towards them?
Time to obliterate that unity.
It’s another uninformed choice where the characters, understandably thinking that the game will continue on as it has, pair up with people they trust... only to find that partners are now opponents. A day or two ago, back at the beginning of all this, these characters might have tried to beat the system (I like the suggestion I’ve seen that players could have just swapped marbles and technically both won), but at this point most are too exhausted, hungry, in pain, and downright terrified to maintain their compassion, let alone the kind of strategic thinking needed to get out of this alive. Sang-woo’s idea about pairs finishing without either having won all the marbles is a good point, as is focusing on who is potentially too young to have played before, but he’s not actually interested in risking himself to test that theory. Ali is and is horrifically betrayed as a result, emphasizing that those who maintain their compassion have a low chance of making it, simply because the system beats it out of so many others. You can’t do it alone. Even Gi-hun, one of the most kind people there and the one who will presumably bring the games down for good, gives in under the threat of “It’s him or me.” He takes advantage of Il-Nam’s tumor to ensure he’s the one to survive. Never mind arguments about how much time Il-Nam has left, never mind the fact that he’s actually the Host and presumably faking his memory loss, the important bit is that Gi-hun, for a time, gives in to that “Him or me” thinking. Even Ji-yeong, who deliberately loses for Sae-byeok, comes across as suicidal as opposed to sacrificial. Which I say not to lessen that sacrifice, but rather to emphasize how it’s really about her believing she has nothing to go back to, especially since she’s convinced she can’t leave with Sae-byeok. Twice she makes the mistake of speaking like they could spend time together after all this, highlighting that a standoffish woman who approached her in a death game is the closest thing she’s got to a friend right now. Her dropping the marble isn’t a moment of heroism, it’s a tragedy. Ali was the only one in that game who both wanted to live and was willing to risk his chance for others. In this system he’s the outlier and without support, he was doomed.
It’s a sentiment that’s echoed when the husband begs the others to stop the game and no one stands to support him. That scene is a far cry from the 50/50 split at the beginning, with those who wanted to stay asking only that they be allowed to continue, and even the Host risking them not coming back by choosing the X. (Which, again, isn’t much of a risk when you understand everyone’s circumstances. Every character there believed that a death game was their only chance.) At this point they’ve been taught to see one another as disposable. As obstacles. After everything, they’re not walking away empty-handed and they’re no longer out for anyone but themselves. The glass stepping stones emphasize this by giving us a man who was, conclusively, able to tell the difference between the glass types and could have led everyone across safely. The numbers don’t matter. It’s another needless, senseless rule that, if you’re paying attention, you realize isn’t actually enforced. None of the guards try to stop Deok-Su when he demands that someone else go ahead and test the glass first. It’s also important that the rules never state there can be only one winner, but the structure of the games has convinced everyone that this is the inevitable conclusion. That man could have saved all 16 of them (or at least, he would have believed he could save all 16. We as the audience know the Front Man would eventually have turned out the lights), but as he says when confronted with that fact, why would he? They were willing to kill him, so why would he risk his neck for them? That fear and hopelessness perpetuates itself until few are willing to take a risk for anyone else. That’s the point of the game’s structure. Only Gi-hun approaches Sae-byeok with his knife in his pocket, still offering to team up and split the money.
Oh, and the fact that she was dying not from the game itself, but a random shard of glass that hit her due to an explosion that existed only for the drama — the entertainment — of those watching? That hits home.
When we finally reach the “Squid Game,” all pretense has been lost. It’s not about the game (they barely play that at all), but rather watching these two men that have both been broken by the system turn on each other, everyone working under the assumption that only 1 out of 456 can make it out. Just ONE out of FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SIX. A miniscule percentage of the whole is allowed to survive, going on to make their way in the world with financial stability. And, of course, the entire point is that this system isn’t really the games. It’s capitalism. It’s debt. It’s any form of financial hardship that pushes people to the edge. The games are just a horrifyingly colorful representation of it. Which is why even though Gi-hun refuses to kill Sang-woo, even though he offers to end the game so they can both go home, Sang-woo rejects that and chooses suicide instead. Because the game is rigged. They can’t both win and get the money. If they leave without it they’re just re-entering a different version of hell. Sang-woo is not a bad person. He’s a desperate, terrified person who can see no way out. He finally admits that he doesn’t want to be someone who does anything to survive and instead takes himself out of the game entirely, using his final words to beg on his mother’s behalf. Gi-hun is left without a childhood friend, without the relationships he’s built here, having watched 455 deaths, coming home to find his mother dead on the floor due in part to his absence, one of the strongest bonds later tainted with the knowledge of the Host’s manipulation... and all of it for an obscene amount of money when, in reality, he only ever needed enough to get by. Money to pay medical bills. Money to buy his daughter a present. It’s important that everyone’s dreams are small. They want to pay off their debt, buy a house, reunite family, maybe travel a little to treat themselves. No one is dreaming of gold yachts or caviar laden meals. People just want, need, enough to be comfortable. Pay for the fish they bought at the market, bus fair, a rose.
Very little in this show is subtle and I mean that as a heartfelt (if also heart-heavy) compliment. Yes, there’s hope attached to Il-Nam losing his game at the end, but the point isn’t really that someone came before midnight, it’s that so many passed that by the time someone did stop for the homeless man, it was likely too late. And the point beyond that is that he was living in a world that allowed him to end up on the street in the first place, producing a population who, busy trying to play the game for themselves, have little time, energy, resources, or compassion to spare for him, all while those who unquestionably do have the means, the rich elite, look on from up high, turning his suffering into a game. The fact that the man who gets closest to dismantling the games, our detective, did so out of love for his brother, only to learn it’s his brother pulling the stings — becoming a willful orchestrator after winning the game himself, trying to lure the detective in too, a sharp contrast to Gi-hun’s last phone call — is very, very deliberate. The longer you’re in the game, the easier it becomes to just give up and perpetuate it, leaving only a few to either die for their trust and compassion (Ali) or continue fighting on everyone’s behalf (Gi-hun). The order of the games and the numerous misleading “choices,” as well as the ways in which people do maintain their freedom but don’t exorcise it, very much reflects that.
#squid game#squid game spoilers#suicide tw#mymetas#I have soooo many thoughts about this show#which is hardly surprising#given its messages and how wonderfully they were constructed#had to get at least a few ideas#out into the tumblr void#oof binging that in 24 hours really was like a punch to the gut

sorry if you already got this
Thank you so much for this ask, I love these asks about characters ❤️ here are my beloveds in no particular order:
Ratan Vaish - Kali: Call of Darkness, Romance Club: The love of my life, he's everything I've ever dreamed in a character and more, the interactions with him makes me feel goosebumps every time 🛐 He's also very relatable in a lot of occasions ❤️
Spanish Berlin - La casa de papel/Money Heist: How can I not love Berlin? He's one of the most multi-dimensional and entertaining characters in LCDP, also he always managed to make me laugh 😂 Looking forward to his spin-off 🛐
Cho Sangwoo - Squid Game: My misunderstood boy, he did what he had to do to survive 🤷♀️ his actions were unethical yes, but there were no other options. Truly a morally grey and complex character (and I know Gi-hun and him dated in her past)
Raul Leon - Control Z: I know he's crazy and that he's a yandere but he has layers you know and I can't resist him, sue me I suppose 😂
Korean Professor - Money Heist Korea: I don't know why for some reason I like him better than Spanish professor, don't get me wrong, Spanish professor is awesome but I prefer the Korean one because he's more collected, composed and calculating. He was also kinda relatable 🤷♀️
Chisjen Avasarala - The Expanse: She's THE girlboss, and the true queen of Earth, she gets things done and has an unparalleled elegance, a true diplomat too, no choice but to simp ❤️
Todd Madison - Love from outer space, Romance Club: The other love of my life ❤️ my soulmate, he's as nerdy and as geeky as me and his humour? unprecedented ❤️ (he's the kind of guy I'd fall for irl, along with Ratan)
Gaius Augustine - Bloodbound, Choices stories you play: At the beginning I couldn't stand him. But then after seeing his redemption arc and the reason why he became like that, I started seeing him in a different light and he became my favourite character in Choices 🤷♀️
Colin Ritman, Black Mirror Bandersnatch: He's just so cool, his attitude, his style, his voice, everything in him is so cool, EVERYTHING and he gives off an aura of confidence, definitely one of the coolest characters I've ever seen, makes my knees weak 🛐
Yagami Light - Death Note: Sorry (not really) but #TeamLight all the way. Yes, he's a literal psychopath but he's very smart, complex and an overall well-written character and I can't resist that type of character 🤷♀️
Some of them are villains, some others are morally grey, some others are downright deranged, while others are anti-heroes but they're still my comfort characters. I connect so well with the fictional deranged I suppose 😂🤷♀️
Honourable mention to: Nick Nelson, Angelo Lagusa, Selena, Pierce and Kenzo Tenma ❤️❤️

Despite much of the world (and the box office) reeling from a global pandemic, television thrived throughout 2021. The year saw streamers like Netflix set new records with its audience, and new streamers such as Disney+ introduce all kinds of new programming. Television drove much of the pop culture conversation for the year, thanks largely in part to the wonderful performance by some of the leading men . After an intense period of scrutinization by the team at ComicBook.com, we've determined the best of the best.
And the winner of the 2021 ComicBook.com Golden Issue Award for Best TV Actor is...
Tom Hiddleston as Loki Laufeyson in Loki!
Hiddleston is far from being a newcomer to fans. After debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor, the classically-trained actor has become a beloved part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though he's appeared in a handful of Marvel Studios properties, no project gave him the right amount to shine—then Disney+'s Loki came along. Scripts from a writer's room led by Michael Waldron complemented Hiddleston's performance of the mischievous villain perfectly, taking him on a time-traveling crime thriller injected with that classic Marvel charm at every turn—and the show's lead ate it up, and then some.
Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans had seen the Asgardian trickster progress from a one-dimensional villain in Thor to a complex anti-hero in Thor: Ragnarok, before being killed off in the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War. Since Loki technically takes place in the past, the series allowed Hiddleston to explore that entire history within the span of one single event series, and he took full advantage of it.The actor made slight tweaks to his character here and there, making it obvious as to why Loki was fan-favorite in the first place. His background allowed him to further nail down his foundation as a cornerstone of Norse mythology, while much more screen time allowed him to flesh out the character's humor and personal feelings.
But most importantly—Hiddleston managed to keep his character fresh. In a franchise where fans started to tire of the same characters they'd seen constantly over the past decade, one of the longest-serving villains happened to get injected with a breath of fresh air, and the opportunity to keep moving forward with additional storytelling and development. And that's what Tom Hiddleston is ComicBook.com's Best TV Actor of 2021.
Congratulations to Hiddleston for his Best TV Actor win!
The nominees for Best TV Actor are:
Tom Hiddleston (Loki Laufeyson, Loki) -- WINNER
Paul Bettany (The Vision, WandaVision)
Lee Jung-jae (seong Gi-hun, Squid Game)
Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier)
Kayvan Novak (Nandor, What We Do in the Shadows)

Imagine this as the finale of Squid Game season 2:
So the general plot is that Hwang Jun-ho (who survived getting shot) and Seong Gi-hun joined forces and formed a plan to infiltrate the next round of games in order to save the contestants, take the VIPs down, and make off with the prize money (the reason is because Jun-ho and Gi-hun recruited people who were only interested in the money). At the end of the penultimate episode, the two are captured by the guards after their plot was discovered by In-ho.
The VIPs order for the two of them to be executed. The guards are about to kill them when In-ho suddenly realizes that the VIPs’ money has gone missing. The games are temporarily stopped in order to figure out what happened. Jun-ho says that his team already made off with the money, which In-ho feels is a bluff. Jun-ho and Gi-hun are transferred to the island’s holding cells...which turns out to be all according to Jun-ho’s plan.
We get a flashback that reveals that Jun-ho planned for their cover to be blown. The goal was to distract In-ho and the VIPs long enough in order for the rest of the team to do their jobs. To prevent them from being executed, they would steal the VIPs’ prize money first and hold it as ransom . Once they were transferred to the holding cells, Jun-ho’s team would move in to free them and escape the island.
(NOTE: Keeping with the show’s anti-capitalist themes, Jun-ho and Gi-hun’s plot literally involved holding money hostage. Also, to show that whoever controls the money has the power. The once all-powerful VIPs are brought down because they lost control of their wealth)
When we cut back to the VIPs, a guard (played by Go Won-hee) announces that they “found” the VIPs’ money. Unbeknownst to them, this guard is actually a mole working for Jun-ho and Gi-hun. This is the actress by the way:
She leaves a crate that apparently has the money for the VIPs to go through, then proceeds to leave the room. As the VIPs open the crate, they are shocked when they see that there’s bombs inside. That was another part of Jun-ho’s plan; since they couldn’t sneak explosives into the island, they would use the island’s own bombs to take the VIPs out.
Go Won-hee’s character activates the bombs, taking all the VIPs out in one go. She then makes her way down to the holding cells and frees Jun-ho and Gi-hun. The three then link up with the rest of the team and the surviving contestants (there should be only 3 contestants left) and make their escape.
The last few minutes of the episode is the chaotic escape from the island, with In-ho and all the guards going after the survivors. Everyone makes it off the island and Gi-hun manages to shoot In-ho, although In-ho obviously survives the gunshot.

First impression: oh wow this show's full of veterans, save for one:
A new face making her first appearance on the screens: Jung Ho Yeon.
So, here is our main guy, Papa Gi-hun who is played by Lee Jung Jae. A believable character with great depth. The anti-hero that society doesn't believe in and is contemptuous of. Obviously, he mooches off his poor old mother so that he could gamble away all the money and owe even more to notorious loan sharks. It's a vicious cycle for one who is at his wits' end.
Then, he meets a mysterious goblin-like salesman at the subway.
He offers him a game he couldn't resist.
Any desperate man would give into the temptation.

Bro I just realized this is the English dub.
The English subtitles for the original Korean are so much better. Observe:
Sang-woo: Gi-hun hyung! Do you know why your life is so pathetic? Because you ask the dumbest questions even in this situation, constantly minding other people’s business with that pea brain of yours, not knowing your ass from your elbow.
Gi-hun: Sure. It’s all my fault I ended up like this. I’m slow and incompetent. I’m a nosy dimwit who lives off the back of his old mother. But why is the pride of Ssangmun-dong, the genius Cho Sang-woo of SNU, here, floundering around in this shithole with a dimwit like me? Is that also my fault?
Gi-hun! Your life is so damn pathetic, and here’s why. It’s because you always gotta open your mouth and ask something idiotic. Because you’re a nosy-ass idiot who’s too slow to keep it shut. Someone who always has to get into trouble but somehow can’t tell he’s in it.
#reblog of a reblog#squid game#seong gi-hun#anti cho sang-woo#gi-hun really said ‘imma use SNU against you now’#i really love how he brought SNU into this it felt so cathartic#i was extremely angry with sang-woo at that point and gi-hun DELIVERED#can you tell i’m a gi-hun stan
