(Also applies to both yuri and hetero ships.)
It's all about the balance. Even if the abused partner is also an asshole, if they are mistreated by their partner without returning 'the favor' to them, that's not 'toxic relationship that is such a shitshow on both sides, that it's entertaining to watch'. It's just abuse that should not under any circumstances be romanticized or downplayed by the show/movie or its fandom, even if it's fictional.

friend, i came with something different today that is so anti C//A: see and analyce this pictures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, for you, which of this tropes represent c*tradora the most ? ( this is a personal opinion so no answer is good or wrong ) and why ?
I LAUGHED HARDER THAN I SHOULD'VE AT THE FIRST ONE THAT'S LITERAL CATRA WHAT!? Anyways, changing the subject, I would say probably the second one, even though the show stopped protraying Catra as bad in season 5, but the spop fandom just sees her as a poor little meow meow who did nothing wrong and it was Adora's fault for leaving her! Even though Adora offered to take Catra with her and Catra rejected

I follow an anti C//tradora blog because it has interesting points and helps me think about how I could write characters with problems like C/tra's if I ever needed to without falling to the flaws of SP0P. I still ship C//tradora of course (my only issues of it is that C/tra isn't really given a redemption arc and they didn't let Ad0ra forgive her on her own terms). But then I saw them say that it is basically inc3stual and their relationship relies on them being sisters. Girl what. What the fuck are you talking about. I was with you until then.

“Adora could have saved the world with Hordak” Hordak did absolutely nothing but throw a tantrum 💀💀💀 throwing HP off the platform did absolutely nothing, he was literally useless. Also Adora would have died if Catra wasn’t there. Rewatch the show maybe? You obviously didn’t pay enough attention
"he was literally useless" someone doesn't understand the meaning it held for Hordak to not only defy and reject but try to kill his god, to save Entrapta. Oh, right, how could I forget, c*tra stans would rather pretend she was the victim of cultic religious brainwashing instead of Hordak.
Everything except Entrapdak in season 5 was a joke with c*tr*dora shoehorned in for the creator's pet. Maybe you should gain some critical thinking beyond uwu poor sad innocent catgirl uwu and rewatch the show yourself.

The Romanticizing of Abuse
So, I just finished watching this video (”Killing Stalking” and the Romancing of Abuse by James Somerton. Link here: https://youtu.be/ujmgqNyZ190) and it was a wonderful (if horrific in the content itself) take on media featuring abuse. This entire video features a “gay romance” which is actually two characters in a horror situation and arguably in a torture p*rn situation. The argument of this video is that the piece of media in question was never intended on being romantic, and yet the fanbase perceives it that way. Then the author of the video proceeds to explain why this phenomenon continues to happen today.
I found the most interesting part of it at 52:40, where the questions “why did these two need to be gay?”, “were the sex scenes necessary?”, and “if the [abused character] where a woman, would it have hit too close to home to the author?” Which are all excellent questions, mind you, but now I want to bring it back to our LGBT+ media and well, the ship that this blog is mainly about, though it applies to every other abusive ship in modern media.
Everyone who has watched SPOP knows that the characters that have actually achieved a healthy LGBT+ relationship (Netossa and Spinerella; Lance and George), have very little screen time. Of course, this also means that we have no idea of knowing if they have healthy relationships, but for the sake of this post, we’ll assume that they do. (Not being written at all simply protects these couples from being written poorly written, so... Good job, I guess?) Meanwhile, C//A gets the focus for a huge portion of the show where we are continuously seeing Adora get abused.
Their relationship concludes with Adora envisioning a future where she has C*tra by her side, presumably married, and framed by the narrative as the best thing that could happen to her after all she’d been through. It is the reward from the narrative that Adora should be with her abuser for sticking around with her for this long. It seems to be written as if it’s impossibly romantic.
Why couldn’t Adora, the main protagonist, end up with someone who she hadn’t had to endure the entire series? Well, it might have been a boring conclusion! It might have been overwhelmingly anticlimactic, just like our two healthy gay couples are, who lurk solely in the background until it’s time for them to help out the plot. What interesting things could possibly be happening with two couples who already have their shit together? Nothing, I’m sure! /s
My question is this: Are we not already at a point that LGBT+ relationships are normal enough? Do they have be entwined with these abusive aspects to make them “interesting”?
There was so much to unpack with poor Spinerella, Netossa, Lance and George. I wouldn’t want that in canon, because, well, they aren’t the main characters, but to have the protagonist have a simple, healthy relationship? That isn’t asking for so much.
The standard has to be raised.
I highly suggest watching the video that inspired this post! It was entertaining, informative, insightful, and extremely unnerving. It hit so many points that I couldn’t help but appreciate, though.

Do you ever think about how whack it is that Adora spent seasons 1 through 4 saying how much she DIDNT want to be She Ra or have a destiny and would rather find her birth family she was stolen from and go home, but how for SOME REASON in season 5 she says she LIKED being She Ra and having a destiny made her feel important??? WHAT???
Oh yeah, this was something I eventually realized upon seeing the criticisms towards C*tradora. I thought Adora's personal arc up until s4 was very interesting. I loved Adora standing up to Catra in s3, and you have NO IDEA how loud I cheered when Adora destroyed the sword in s4! She was stepping her foot down, asserting herself as a person. Not as a soldier, not as a weapon, and most importantly not as someone who should follow orders and someone else's destiny - whether it's Catra's desire to take over the world, Shadow Weaver's own twisted plans or the First Ones' true intentions regarding Etheria.
And yeah, like... I'll be honest, I'm almost sure I raised an eyebrow at Adora saying she "liked believing she had a destiny" upon first watching s5 (I'm guilty of dismissing all my concerns really, I'll talk about them in a future post). Considering how determined she was to find her family and her origins, it was weird seeing Adora say the complete opposite and just... drop all her questionings?? Like, even if she never reunited with her biological family and then realized she had a family in Bright Moon, Adora's entire character arc is given a shamefully shallow conclusion. I get s5's intentions with promoting self-love for Adora, but 1) they throw out Adora's admiring determination to choose for herself after an entire life of being kept in the dark, and 2) for Catra of all people to be the only person to give Adora the "love" she deserves is a massive middle finger to her growth, and to Bow, Glimmer, Angella and literally everyone else who did a lot more to protect and care for Adora than Catra ever could.

Friend, i got something funny that i got from instagram, listen i open the app just to find this. I mean it's funny because that account excuse that C*tr* " change " and we have to stop calling her a bad person when she clearly didn't change at all. C//A are the most blind person ( worst than in miraculous ladybug ) like how can't they don't see that they are shipping adoptive sisters and stan a abusive relationship. I though that i have to show you this so i know what do you think ( even I hate C//A and i'm an anti- c*tradora sometimes is funny seeing how C//A shippers tries to convince everyone that the ship is fine and C*tr* is a good person when ins't it and they cannot even accept that their ship is actually incest and abusive ) also another good point i could find is that us anti-c*tradora's are winning because now there is almost noone posting about C//A ( art/tweets/ etc ) and everyone forgots about it ( i think is for total drama new season and cookie run kingdom because we are excited for the new update but i'm not so sure ) but well following the C//A topic, what do you think about this post ?
Tumblr media
Thanks for the ask! And for Catra to really change,we need to see her make an effort. She still disrespects Adora's boundaries, insults her, and even left her on her death bed. Reminder people have to put in effort to change, we can still call them a bad person <3

“Why can’t C*tra antis leave the fandom if they hate it so much?”
Damn didn’t know the whole show consisted of C*tra and C*tradora. Wait theres other characters that people love? Huh? And you can hate the main characters or canon pairings?? What?
Anyway the entire fandom doesn’t revolve around C/tra and her relationship with Adora. There are other things in the show people love

“oh no, how dare Glimmer yell at Adora and be kind of a b*tch in season 4, meanwhile, I love C//tra despite her throughout 4 whole seasons literally beating the f*ck out of Adora, trying to kill her multiple times, ending the universe because C//tra didn’t want Adora to “win,” kidnapping her friends, almost killing bow, and removing Adora’s bodily autonomy when C//tra has first ones tech and threatens to use Adora’s berserk She.ra to slaughter her own friends, but omg, couple goals <3 <3 <3″

i say that i don't like being called a anti but i also hate the fact that the two anti c*tradora urls are pretty much taken by stans bc they're severely more immature than the "antis"

Weren't a lot of C*tradora shippers actually disappinted Kl*antis trying to get over V*ltron by moving on to another, "better" fandom and ship, at least initially? I think that might have been a factor...
oh yeah definitely

Look, okay... No one is gonna like this lmao but I'm going to say it.
Just because "they paved the way," does not mean "we have to forgive everything they did wrong because that's all we have."
Everyone, I mean EVERYONE, is saying this because Lumity is canon now. btw, haven't watched it yet, it's not on Disney+ and that's what I have, and I don't mind TOH spoilers. Anyway.
And Lumity isn't *just* canon-- both characters are well developed, it's pretty healthy, it's really cute, and it's right in the middle of the series-- so we get to see it develop!
But. *but.*
"Steven Universe made this possible! LOK made this possible! She-Ra made this possible! We have to accept all these as perfect because they made representation on screen possible!"
No. We don't. And if you thought, with constructive criticism, about it, you'd know that we do not, actually, have to just roll over and accept the terrible excuses for predecessors Lumity had. Okay?
I'll start with LOK. god. where do I start. I watched ATLA and LOK back to back for the first time. I guess that was a mistake because after the series I just could not put down, LOK was like a slap in the face. Uninteresting male characters there to be the love interests for Korra to go back and forth with. Even more uninteresting female side character that I would, frankly, rather have been the star. And the main character...oh god. Korra is literally the worst, most hated character troupe I have. She's already perfect, a complete overconfident jackass, and gives no shits about anyone as long as she gets to do what she wants. Sorry. Someone had to say it. It's why I can't stand Captain Marvel either. And she's the Avatar, in fact, the worst one ever. She *loses the connection to all the past Avatars,* for crying out loud. And when she's thrown in the dirt, powerless, helpless, she does... Absolutely nothing to change. Cuts her hair, I guess. Saves the world, I guess, but she's still just *so. unlikeable.* And after this constant back and forth between the two guys [I barely remember the names, but I do like Bolin] she's... Suddenly dating Asami? I mean-- there was some hints and stuff leading up to it, so I can't really say I have a problem with the ship. In fact, the ship itself is fine. But literally everything else about the trainwreck that was LOK-- not fine.
Moving on. Steven Universe. Which I have not seen, definitely do not care to. I could barely finish the first episode. To get to the point, everyone worships this show for all the representation and how awesome it is. But... What about all the issues? The racism? The abusive relationships? The racism? "But they had the wlw wedding on screen!" Okay, that's great! As far as I can tell, the ship is fine! I mean, it's a little sus that the couple spend the entire show save five minutes fused into one person, but the ship is fine. But you can't just ignore everything else that happened, considering-- again, the racism, the abusive stuff or whatever the deal is with Lapis, the literal Nazi redemption thing ["but they had a bad day" is not an excuse, sorry]... One ship in this whole mess doesn't make the rest of the series flawless. And, apparently, the wedding wasn't the scandal everyone tries to claim. Considering there's like, four seasons, a movie, and another series after that episode.
Anyway. Finally. She-Ra. We all know how this goes. Because, obviously, this is C*tradora we're talking about. Do I have to say it? We got four well made seasons of the cat being mentally and physically abusive towards the person she claims to love, her victim finally choosing to stand up for herself and be her own person, and that person then ends up with her abuser in the last shitty season. Not to mention throwing the disabled, poc characters under the bus, or ignoring literally everything else the cat did before that moment of confession. which was gross in and of itself. "But my wlw rep!" my dudes, Glimmer was right fucking there. End of story.
The point is, you can't just hero worship these shows because "they paved the way for Lumity." It's fine to say something like, well, these couples happened, so we could have something like this now. Something good. Something that wasn't forced, that didn't involve one or both characters being boring or, worse, toxic, that didn't involve the rest of the show being awful in one way or another. TOH is an all around awesome series. It deals with all kinds of issues, without being racist, or ableist, or apologetic to any number of problematic characters.
Do you really want parents to see something like LOK, where the main character solves everything with aggression, or SU, which forgives actual Nazis for no reason, or She-Ra, which pairs a victim with her abuser-- is that what you want representation to look like? Because if I saw that, and saw that this is what the LGBT+ wants to say is good...well. hopefully you can do the math.
It's fine to acknowledge where the fight started. But don't pretend like the origins were flawless. Don't just roll over and accept whatever comes your way. Be critical. Demand better. You deserve better. You deserve healthy, developed relationships, without forgiving the problematic for no reason.
Update;; so this is like well over a year old and keeps getting notes for some reason, I still hate all the above series. That's not really the point of the post. Y'all still need to recognize that these are big issue series, that there are way better things out there to point to for representation, and that's all I was going for. We deserve better. Stop accepting shit that barely passes as showing representation at all just because it was the starting point. Or at least stop holding it on such a damn pedestal.
