Why Anti-Vaxxers are ableist: From someone who’s mentally disabled

This is something I was thinking about last night, and so now I have to talk about it.

Now of course this doesn’t apply to all anti-vaxxers, but instead is focused on the ones who don’t want to get vaccinated because “vaccines give you autism!!😱”

In order to explain why this is ableist, we have to first understand what the initial problem with this saying is.

Anti-vaxxers often say that “vaccines give you autism! I don’t want my kids to have autism!😡” which would of course just be a parent spouting their Facebook bullshit.

Now, as someone who has two cousins on the autism spectrum, multiple friends on the spectrum, and I myself show symptoms, hearing people say shit like this is very hurtful. The problem with saying something like this is that it paints autism in a bad light, essentially villainizing it and seeing it as something “evil” or bad. This way of thinking seems to be becoming more common, especially with Gen Z. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve heard someone at school use the word “autistic” as an insult.

While yes, autism can be a very difficult disorder to live with, there’s a difference between recognizing the struggle of being autistic and just outright seeing people with autism as some kind of “abomination”.

Another problem is that these “adults” clearly don’t understand how autism works or what it actually is. It’s not a virus or a disease that can just be given to you. It’s something you are born with, often something that can be inherited.

Parents refuse to vaccinate their kids, essentially risking their lives in some aspect, just because they’re paranoid and see autism as some horrible freakish thing. Which, it’s not. Autism is a mental disability that 1 in 36 children have. Which, while that may not seem like a lot, is actually much more than you would think. I know multiple people my age with autism. Is it really worth your kid getting sick just because you’re ableist and see autism as some evil or horrible thing?

Alberta’s government proposed legislative changes Monday to the provincial Bill of Rights aimed at giving residents the right to refuse medical treatments, including vaccines, but is leaving the final word to the courts. If passed, the new bill would protect Albertans from being “coerced” into receiving any kind of medical treatment, so long as an individual has the “capacity” to consent and is not likely to cause “substantial harm to themselves and others.” However, the bill doesn’t specifically define those terms and Justice Minister Mickey Amery told reporters the government would rely on case law and the courts to decide how they’d be interpreted.

The deeply moralist tone that a lot of discussions about media representation take on here are primarily neoliberal before they are anything else. Like the shouting matches people get into about “purity culture” “pro/anti” etc nonsense (even if I think it’s true that some people have a deeply christian worldview about what art ought to say and represent about the world) are downstream of the basic neoliberal assumption that we can and must educate the public by being consumers in a market. “Bad representation” is often framed as a writer’s/developer’s/director’s/etc’s failure to properly educate their audience, or to educate them the wrong way with bad information about the world (which will compel their audience to act, behave, internalise or otherwise believe these bad representations about some social issue). Likewise, to “consume” or give money to a piece of media with Bad Representation is to legitimate and make stronger these bad representations in the world, an act which will cause more people to believe or internalise bad things about themselves or other people. And at the heart of both of those claims is, again, the assumption that mass public education should be undertaken by artists in a private market, who are responsible for creating moral fables and political allegories that they will instil in their audiences by selling it to them. These conversations often become pure nonsense if you don’t accept that the moral and political education of the world should be directed by like, studio executives or tv actors or authors on twitter. There is no horizon of possibility being imagined beyond purchasing, as an individual consumer in a market, your way into good beliefs about the world, instilled in you by Media Product

My ancestors would have wanted pasteurization, vaccines, antibiotics, disinfectants, birth control, psychiatric medications, pain management, anesthesia. My ancestors would have wanted to be able to keep their loved ones around longer, and not lose them too early/too soon to childbirths, injuries, bacterial infections, mental illnesses, and diseases that are curable and/or preventable in our modern day life.

Modern medicine saves lives.

I got it yesterday, barely managed to get up today to visit nana, got home, got into bed and am now unable to get up. My arms are spasming from pain and muscle tension, I’m running a fever, I have the worst nausea I’ve had all year, every time I sit up to try and go pee I get a sharp head pain, and if someone told me I had to get an extra shot tomorrow I’d roll up my sleeve and get it.

Vaccines save lives and if you can get them and CHOOSE NOT TO you will instantly lose any respect I have for you. It’s my standard no matter what. If my IRLs choose to go ‘vaccine-free’ I cut contact and stop interacting with them. I have a barely functional immune system, I have friends with even worse immunocompromised systems than I have (and mines BAD), I have friends who CANT get the vaccine and are more vulnerable to it thanks to people who refuse to get themselves jabbed. I’m not putting myself or others at risk so you can have a dick measuring context with other antivaxxers about how brave you are standing up to smallpox with your vaccine-less stupid meat sack body.
