#JackedKirby - The Boy Commandos meet Batman!!! 💥💥💥 Back in the early 40s Jack and his partner Joe Simon were making a name for themselves over at DC Comics. They had the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, The Sandman and the Boy Commandos in full swing as the country inched closer to war... a war that Jack and Joe would both be fighting in a bit later on. 💥💥💥 The Boy Commandos were quite popular around this time, so the DC brass decided to put them into one of their lead books, Detective Comics. Detective Comics has become synonymous with Batman over the years... but originally it had more of an Anthology Style. So the powers that be enlisted Simon/Kirby to include a Boy Commando story.... and even gave them some cover space to strut their stuff!!! 💥💥💥 The cover image is credited to Kirby, Simon and Jerry Robinson. If I had to guess I’d say the Kirby/Simon drew the Boys and Robinson drew Bats for the sake of artistic continuity. Then the title placards and blurbs would be added. 💥💥💥 Inside the issue the Batman story (a great one called the “ The Cop who hated Batman) appeared first, with the Commando story (Nostradamus Predicts...) coming up second. I’ve also included the opening splash of the Commando’s story to show off Kirby/Simon’s pre WWII art style... Really love the way they did these war era stories, and the art is killer!!! Hi, Everybody. This is a quick post to say that I have a #Kickstarter launching today, and the first day is apparently the most important, so I have been asked to post ahead of time to ask for your support. . I'm part of a team of twenty-five Indie comic book writers & artists who have pooled their talents to create a volume called “Modern Mythology : The Hero’s Journey”. It is an anthology #GraphicNovel with over 150 pages and many different stories. Each of the sixteen chapters re-tells an ancient Hero myth in a modern setting. My story resets #VasilisaPrekrasnaya's encounter with #BabaYaga in contemporary Russia, reimagining the old forests of myth and legend as having been eaten by an ever expanding Moscow. . Now that all the work is done we are launching the Kickstarter in a couple of hours, so that we can cover the costs of printing and shipping the book. I don't understand all the ins & outs of Kickstarter, but the Editor who organized this project assures me that a big first day is one of the most important keys to #KS success. . #JackedKirby - A Marvel Writer/Artist credit for Jack... 💥💥💥 Chamber of Darkness was an anthology horror comic that Marvel created to rival DC’s very popular House of Mystery/House of Secrets series... and despite the fact that it had EVERYONE at Marvel contributing to it (Wrightson, Buscema, Romita, Windsor-Smith, Goodwin, Thomas,etc) in some form it only lasted 8 issues before it became a reprint only book called Monsters on the Prowl with Issue 9. But an early issue gives us something that was quite rare at the time: a story written and pencilled by Jack Kirby!!! 💥💥💥 #Issue5 was published in June of 1970 and featured the Kirby vehicle “And Fear Shall Follow” which Jack is credited as the writer and penciller of. Now this isn’t such a big deal... but it’s one of the few times in Jack’s first stint at Marvel that he received a writers credit! 💥💥💥 Jack has long rumored to have been a very integral part of the writing process on most of the books he was drawing for Marvel (like FF and Thor) but Stan Lee is suspiciously credited as solo writer on those stories... which many believe led to Jack leaving for rival DC in 1971. Either way, Jack wrote/penciled two stories for Chamber of Darkness (issue 4/5) and received credit for both!
