Day 6 of Disember: Treasure Planet. Of course I went with a creature to spotlight this largely underrated Disney film (in my opinion). If you haven't seen it, I think it's worth a watch! Now this isn't a one to one painting of the original Orcus Galacticus seenin the movie. I went with a slightly more alien redesign while still keeping true to the overall feel..for the most part.

For almost 10 years I have had the privilege of working professionally as a 2D animator. I participated in many projects of different styles, and each one of them helped me to get out of my comfort zone and learn (or change) concepts about the industry that until then I wasn't very clear about.

But without a doubt, one of the keys to continue growing as an artist is not to stop studying the classics. When considering this idea, I set myself the challenge of animating characters that I always dreamed of doing (since, for various reasons, the opportunities would be almost impossible).

I share this pencil test of Simba from Disney’s The Lion King (one of my favorites, by far) playing hunter. I admit that it was not easy to draw a four-legged animal (even with reference images). The challenge was to make his performance feel natural and believable. Still, I had a lot of fun in the process. I hope I have captured its essence.

Kabuki Strikes.

Since I did all of Big Hero 6 over a year ago it feels like they had something missing, their mysterious adversary perhaps. So, donning his mask and dark clothing, Robert Callaghan, forma University tutor dons the persona of the vengeful Kabuki. Preparing to destroy everything to those who ruined his life. Enjoy!

After a while without uploading new things (taking advantage of the fact that we are still celebrating #MerMay and with the live-action version of The Little Mermaid about to be released) I share this pencil test tribute to Ariel, another Disney character I always wanted to animate, that she has just found a “snarfblatt” at the bottom of the sea. 

It was a super interesting experience giving life to a character who is always moving fluidly and energetically underwater. Perhaps the most challenging thing has been keeping her shapes well drawn throughout the scene. I hope that, as with Simba, I have captured the essence of her.
