2024 Book Summary
Summarizing my yearly reading and selecting the 5 best books of the year is one of my longest personal traditions. For many years I used to put my lists on Facebook, but I quit it early in 2024, so now testing out Tumblr as an alternative, at least for my own records :).
I would love to see your lists, O Tumblrites! (pronounced like "Quirites")
Numbers: In 2024 I have read 50 books, in 4 languages.
Firsts: this year I started listening to audiobooks (especially while crocheting on long plane rides), and started reading un-abridged Latin: Seneca, Cicero, <3 Sallust <3, Tacitus, P. Cornelius Nepos, etc. I think, more Latin to solidify it in 2025, and then French in 2026! (Unless I give in and start on French earlier).
Top 5:
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (read in English, Hapgood translation because for this book translations do matter). One of the best books I have ever read. The reason for Lemur's Belated Awakening of Social Consciousness, a self-reckoning, a very practical change in certain decisions I have made about my life, and a reminder of the power of hope and progress and the radiance of the future that recalls Terra Ignota (and the character(s) I would follow to hell and back, looking at you Les Amis). I could write so much more about it; but, you might start with my pinned post.
C. Sallustius Crispus (Sallust), Bellum Catilinae A.k.a. the reason why if you know me in real life, I haven't been able to shut up about the Catilinarian conspiracy, the fact that that we mostly learn about from Cicero's In Catilinam speeches which were vehemently against it; and whether Caelius was the traitor, with his own failed rebellion recalling Catilina's 15 years later; and how Caesar spoke for clemency while Cato called for death; and Catilina's speech at his desperate last stand (I will add an excerpt in comments)...and what a shame it is that we don't have piles of books and movies about this period! (OK I loved Steven Saylor's Catilina's Riddle but I could read ten more!) I am currently in the state of "do I have to write the novel I am dying to read?" :D
Sophocles, The Three Theban Plays (Antigone, Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus) read in English, Fagles translation. I read it for a Continuing Education class on the plays of Sophocles, which was a fantastic experience overall: 18 people of all ages and all walks of life spending late Wednesday nights (in person) reading and discussing plays with an absolutely wonderful professor. What it means to be a hero outside the epic; and the questions of identity, piety, family, city/state and self-determination; and absolutely gorgeous imagery.
Donald Kagan, The Peloponnesian War. I have read a fair number of Classical history books this year, and this was by far the best - in part because I love military history and strategy, and the author is excellent in discussing it, not just every specific decision, but the reasoning behind it, and what were the alternatives and the potential outcomes. It is a very clearly written and incredibly readable book! Of course I am a coward for not starting straight with Thucydides, but he awaits me in 2025! :D More Alcibiades! (Alcibiates, Theramenes and Thrasybulus my beloved Original Triumvirate :P)
Victor Hugo, Ninety Three. A wonderful, complex take on La Vendée in 1793. So...this was the favorite book of my grandma's, whose own family was caught between the Russian forces and the freedom fighters in the 1940s, and who became a history teacher under USSR occupation afterwards. There were a lot of things she couldn't exactly talk about in class...which meant she taught a lot of French Revolution, adored Camille Desmoulins, and told me how much she had cried while reading 1793. And it took me decades to actually realize all of that and finally read it, which is bittersweet, because my grandma had passed away two years ago and I cannot talk to her about it. (If you've read this far, call whoever you consider loved family; doesn't have to be blood related at all).
I will be starting 2025 with A Place of Greater Safety by Hillary Mantel.
Here's to so many more wonderful books to read and to discuss with friends; and to provide us with solace and inspiration in 2025! <3

2024 Wrap-Up (Aka the year Hijack hijacked my life)
HERE’S TO 2024 🍻🍻 (ignore the fact that it’s early December I got too excited and made it a bit early)
Long live the orange hoodie 🤟Just picture me squinting at my screen trying to pick and choose which of my kids get to feature in the wrap up lmao there’s been so many this year. Also the annual predecessors for funsies and progress’ sake. (minus 2021 bc my dumbass forgot back then lmao) (Don’t mind me just having flashbacks to how meticulous and tedious it was to draw 22’s city scape pshshshshs)

Got some FIMT art on there so here’s the linkkk.

Scraping in just barely in time, it's the 2024 art summary!!!! This is the second year I've made one of these- this time switching to a template from moa810/hatoking. And OC credit where due, Vio in May and June is borrowed (as always) from my dear friend @mountainashfae, while the (belated) OC Kiss Week art from March features @loderlied's Zeke and Art Fight art from July is @exmeowstic's Azathoth and Bastion :)
I had a weird year with some pretty extreme ups and downs, and looking back on my art this year feels strange because of that. I was very ambitious with a lot of stuff this year, and I participated in Art Fight for the first time. At the same time, I think I felt my limitations pretty keenly, especially hitting my usual autumn slump. Still, I'm proud of a lot of what I did, and it's wild that I had so much stuff I liked that didn't make the cut on top of having something in color for every single month.
Thank you to everyone who's stuck around or who has followed me this year- I appreciate you all so much. Here's hoping 2025 can be a good year of growth!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last year summary side by side... love that you can see the same semester slump lmao
As a side note I'm still devastated I didn't quite manage to finish the BalthaTris August art in July when I wanted to because we could have had this beautiful triple trio run. So close!!!!

Total Words Published in 2023: 75,954
Tri: Integrity Lens
Puits d'Amour
Four Years
Info on Infinite Possibilities
I wrote/edited/planned/drafted a lot more than what I published, but I'm not sure how to share/quantify that. In fact, this is the first year I've been able to celebrate my work in a summarized/visual way, and it's all thanks to Zuz's fanfiction year end wrap-up template! Zuz, ty for giving fanfic writers a way to participate in the year end wrap ups <3
I feel that the content I produced this year is truly high quality and personally meaningful. I'm proud of it, and I'm excited to continue growing, learning, and working on both myself and my craft. Thank you to everyone who is along for the ride with me. It means a lot that my stories matter to you.
I'm wishing you all the best in 2024. And remember, self care and growth are more important than output. Creating and well being go hand in hand, but there must be balance.
All my love,
Hidden

art summary 2023!!!
i wanted to give slight commentary instead of just 12 random pngs so here you go
tuesday 3rd january - blah blah blah!
Tumblr media
this was meant to be the first frame of an animation. then flipaclip decided not to work. anyway theres a lot of incomplete stuff from this year and this is (sort of) one of them. idk how to explain why theres 4 of me and what's going on, it makes sense (sort of) if you read the thing its based on.
monday 20th february - waluigi doodle page
Tumblr media
i literally cannot stress enough this is the only thing i can be certain was definitely drawn in february. i would have picked a different thing otherwise, i swear. i was on a gc late at night asking who i should draw with waluigi and they gave me yoshi koopas and birdette. istg.
tuesday 21st march - tails and tbh (discord pfp)
Tumblr media
FINALLY!!! SOMETHING ACTUALLY GOOD FOR COMPARING!!!
its funny how on one hand i dont draw tails like that AT ALL anymore, but at the same time, literally all my headcanons are there, like his fangs coming out when hes really happy, his fluffy ears, etc. the onky thing missing really is drawing fluffy arms and legs lol. as for the rest of the drawing, i think its ok. theres a few errors, particularly with the stroke, and i needed to fix the fill bucket around tbh's eyes, but this is nearly a year old now so im not fixing it. sorry.
friday 21st april - gently holding tails
Tumblr media
ah, tails plushie, how i love thee. where the hell are you girl i havent seen you in months. i have waluigi now. i miss you :(
tuesday 9th may - waluigi sketch with alcohol markers
Tumblr media
i hate alcohol markers. they dry too quickly. so it surprised me when one day, while forcing myself to like them, i drew something i actually liked. i still love this btw!!! this is the basis for how i currently draw waluigi rn, and my art as a whole!!!
also fun fact: i drew this the day before i started reading sonic idw :)
saturday 24th june - transmasc luigi watercolour stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
once again, weird mario fanart i made while talking to a friend late at night. the initial shirtless luigi was drawn as a joke because of a really quick shirtless waluigi my friend drew at summer school in 2022 as a joke, which is what the weird one who craves death is based on. weird as this art may be, this was such a happy time in the year for me and i miss it greatly :)
ill have to do july - december in a follow up post because i reached the image limit lol

2024 Writing Review + December Writing Summary
I can't believe 2024 is (almost) over! This has been a pretty great year for me writing-wise — in this post, I'll break down just how much I did.
Words written this year: 184,808 (this number is actually off because I did some extra edits on A Summer with the Immortal — more on that later — which I didn't count, but it's not hugely off)
Words written this month: 12,084
The Mysteries of the Apricot Sun 🌇
Total words written this year: 92,568
FIRST DRAFT
Words written this year: 81,550
Total word count: 93,110
Date completed: October 15
SECOND DRAFT / FIRST ROUND OF EDITS
New words written: 11,018
New words written this month: 1,831
Total word count: 25,360
Current chapter: 9 out of 32
Estimated completion: 26%
For the first time, editing is actually pretty easy. This is because I actually more or less plotted it beforehand (turns out I'm more of a plotter than a pantser after all), so I came out of the first draft without something in need of major structural changes. I'm really happy with it overall!
The Claws of the Ounce 🫀
Words written this year: 70,440
Words written this month: 7,440
Current chapter: 26 out of 29 / Draft 2
Estimated completion: 87%
This was hard at times, but I managed. The new endgame is in sight, and it's amazing!
The Gift of Gloves 🧤
Words written this year: 16,495
Words written this month: 1,850
Current chapter: 8 out of 9 / Draft 2
Estimated completion: 80%
This was really hard. Draft 3 will need some hefty revision as well. Still, I like what's coming out of it!
I also wrote a few short stories / flash fiction pieces and bits from future book ideas throughout this year, including some this month.
And now…
A Summer with the Immortal 🪴
I know I said I had this manuscript ready well into last year. I know I said I was trying to query it, that I even got a like from an agent in a Discord pitch event.
The hard truth is, I always had doubts about that. A Summer with the Immortal is very much written as the start of a series, and I've heard about authors having trouble getting their series seen through to the end. It's also pretty short for a novel. On top of that, I kept looking over it and seeing things I wanted to refine further.
So I pulled back from my plans of publication. Over most of this year, I kept doing little edits. And I decided I want to self-publish this after all.
Stay tuned. For real.
(PS: If you’re the agent in question and you’re reading this somehow — I’m sorry!)

[[ i made my boyfriend read this annual so of course i read this again and i still think about it all the time. i'm so goddamn devastated. "the friend" . GOD. it's being draped over a chair thinking "i'm so loved and cared for <333". what fucks me up heavily is the idea that the symbiote WAS trying to communicate that it was alive or SOMETHING to peter.
but because its language is literally shit like feelings and memories, peter didn't pick up on that ( understandably ! ). which is why it started making him feel weird. but it makes me ache so much. because it's not necessarily either of their faults for what happened. peter was scared, the symbiote was scared. but the "i'd rather die than be bonded to you" thing must've stung so much for it. i ache for this fictional sentient slime so much. ]]

Sir Eric Neal summarised the year in his chairman's statement in the 1991 annual report. The statement, which had been furnished by management and written in a way that reflected what were known to be his views and attitudes, said:
As foreshadowed in my last report to you, the 1990-91 year has been one of the most difficult Westpac has faced in its 174 years of operations. Australia's current recession has been longer and deeper than was expected and has seriously impacted the bank's operations results . . . There are signs that the worst of the bad debt experience may now be behind us . . . Of particular significance to the Westpac Group has been the downturn in the commercial property market. Management of the group's property portfolio has been strengthened and the close involvement of the board property committee provides additional assistance to the proprietors that the group's property exposure is under constant review . . . Directors are satisfied that valuations of the group's major property exposures are appropriate and that provisions have been established where necessary to reflect any potential loss of value.
