Top 5 fairy tale retellings
Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 fairy tale retellings!! Now, I know this topic is not for everyone. In fact, it’s pretty much designed purely for me. But, as host, that’s my prerogative every so often. And, I’m not sorry. Sorry. But, for not being sorry. Not for the topic. I’ll stop now. Apparently, somewhere in the world 26 February is National Fairy Tale…

@dragonskxn it seems a group of geriatrics have joined the soupfest...
~
"Try not to drool in the sssoup, you abssssolute caveman. Rabies is the lasst thing anyone would want in their food." The serpent scolded the fox, pulling at one of Willy's elongated ears and causing him to whine.
Willy, in return, of course snapped and tried to nip at Cornelius' hand, lucky for him- the rabid fox missed the target and dropped his item he intended to add to the soup. He called it Pudge. Short for Pumpkin Smudge.
"My ingredient!" The man exclaimed as he scrambled to recollect the vegetable. Willy had brought a large pumpkin he held in his arms. It seemed a little old, not fresh out of a pumpkin patch but still edible; he had sloppily carved what seemed to be a pig's face on it (probably an attempt at picturing the dragoness' pet hog). The sudden movement and the weight of the food item caused him to lose his footing and drop the pumpkin, which rolled away from him.
"Now look what you've done! You BASTARD!" The fox yelled from afar... Versy chuckled at the poor man's misfortune and continued slithering along without him.
He carried a storage basket in one of his arms. Inside it was two freshly baked loafs of brioche bread, gingerbread, a piece of roasted swan (safe to assume he ate the rest), plum puddings, a comically large truffle that had been washed so clean, neatly cut into slices and picked from any parasites that may have been in it that one wouldn't believe this thing was buried deep into the dirt just a day or two ago, and sea grapes. Not all of these were i gredients for the soup, obviously, only the truffle was meant to be ingredient for the 'main event' at the dragon's cottage, the rest? Well! They were only to be considered little snacks to nibble on for everyone. And of course he would be eager to hear other's opinions on his food, which he always simply loved to discuss.
He slithered alongside a distinguishable gentleman wearing a dapper vertical-lined tuxedo and a red rose on his chest that stood out the most in all of his black and white fashion. Maxwell!
He said nothing as the serpent lightly bullied the fox man earlier, only appearing slighting annoyed but ultimately unamused. Versy's size and appearence made him a tad uneasy, but nothing he wasn't used to already in The Constant, what with all the giant monsters he created and the beasts that came with each season. He had a personal vendetta against the Bearger for destroying his beehives.
In his arms he carried none other than Chester! The little living container panted just a like a dog, content. Inside, he carried not just his own eyebone, but also several bundlewraps that stored the ingredients he brought for Annalise: several berries, four drumsticks, a pair of frog's legs, two tallbird eggs, a leafy meat, two eggplants, a mandrake, as well as some uh... more questionable items, like snake skin, a batilisk wing, a deerclop's eyeball and several pieces of monster meat (hopeful their 'harmful flavor' would no doubt be neutralized by Anna upon being mixed with so many other of her ingredients in her cooking like it would sometimes happen when he made meatballs with it... or maybe, best care scenario, it wouldn't harm her at all, like it happens with the spider child, since she was not all human in nature like him).
The mandrake was his ingredient for the soup. Much like Willy's pumpkin, it didn't seem all that fresh either; it had some scratches that gave the item some darkened spots here and there- the most noticeable dark spot was the massive stab wound at the center, but it wasn't outright rotten. At best it may have been a little stale but not bad. He felt a little embrassed giving her an item in such a condition, but hey- mandrakes were no easy task in finding and killing!
There rest... were all a gift. He knew Anna loved cooking and was terrific at it, how could he not? Especially given the conditions of his ingredient. Of course he'd bring gifts for the lady herself. One such gift that was quite ah.. eye-catching, was small but very round blue egg, with lime green, chunky spots all over it, simply wrapped in a black shadowy bow (mostly to emphasize that it was meant as a gift and not as the ingredient given the circumstances).
Annalise's a farmer... and, from what little he knew so far, a bird-like dragon, so she must know a thing or two about hatching eggs..
#maxwell has gifted anna a doydoy egg :3#mf be like: okay i know youre kind of like a bird so if you ever get like. broody.#here. have Egg of a species that is as endagered as yours is#say pal...you dont look so good ( maxwell )#the serpent ( cornelius )#rabid jealousy ( willy )#dragonskxn // ₊˚.༄ ೃ ᴀɴɴᴀʟɪꜱᴇ ༺ ˖࣪#dragonsoupfest2023#food tw

Devilman Crybaby meets Marvel’s Venom in Exordia, the science fiction debut of Seth Dickinson, author of The Traitor Baru Cormorant.
Ssrin Character Illustration by Julie Dillon
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Meet Anna Sinjari, a refugee and disaffected office worker eking an existence in New York City. Her life is about to be upended by Ssrin, an alien with eight serpent heads, no qualms with cold-blooded murder, and an appetite for turtles (yum).
The universe is governed by seven passions, seven patterns which appear again and again, across species and across time. Anna and Ssrin are bound by the last and the greatest. The cosmos itself ships their very souls. Specifically for them, that means they’ll have to outmaneuver spies, armies, and government agencies to save humanity from a diabolical alien entity, hellbent on pinioning the souls of every creature on earth.
Exordia is expansive adventure science fiction that reads like a race-against-the-clock thriller in the vein of Michael Crichton, but steeped in the irony, humor, and pain of the Internet age. An alien-human epic for those who've always rooted for the monster.

📚The Good Omens graphic novel Kickstarter mega post 📚
As we enter the last hours of the Good Omens graphic novel Kickstarter, here’s a recap of ALL the items you can get and how to get them. We’ll also answer some of the main questions you’ve had.
Get yours here!
*
TIERS
THE HUMAN TIER (£25 GBP) includes one copy of the Good Omens graphic novel. All of the stretch goal embellishments (foiling, ribbon, foreword, afterword, extra pages, etc) cover every level (including early bird). Every backer also gets a bookmark. This also includes the foreword and afterword by Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Jon Hamm.
*
THE SERPENT TIER (£40 GBP) includes one copy of the Good Omens graphic novel, a dust jacket* featuring an alt cover by Frank Quitely and Loot Pack #1*, which is full of goodies. *Stretch goals have added to these items, full info below.
The alt cover dust jacket is now reversible, with the other side featuring this by Rachael Stott in b&w.
✔️Serpent gets the dust jacket for your graphic novel.
✖ It does not have a print of this image. The colour version is available as an add on.
Loot Pack #1 originally featured 2 x Colleen Doran prints (including a brand new piece), a postcard and bookmark. Fans have unlocked additional Colleen prints, some colouring pages, as well as *many* prints from other artists… You have unlocked prints from Rachael Stott (different to the alt cover image), Sarah Graley, David Aja, Mark Buckingham, Tanya Roberts, Paul Kidby, Alice Oseman and Anna Morozova, as well as the Frank Quitely cover as a print.
We’ve been asked a lot about Alice Oseman's prints, so to clarify: if you back the Serpent Tier or above, you will get Alice's print featuring Aziraphale, as well as the newly commissioned Crowley to complete the pair.
*
THE HELLHOUND TIER (£120 GBP) includes the prior tiers + Loot Pack #2, ft. Crowley and Aziraphale enamel pins, stickers, and a pack of the Good Omens trading cards. These will be playable. Tier backers can also get rare cards in their order at random.
*
THE WITCHFINDER TIER (£200 GBP) has all of this, plus an exquisite map by Julien Labit. Dimensions will be approximately 594 x 841 mm.
*
THE DEMON TIER (£320 GBP) is a creative punch from head to toe, with five additional enamel pins (including Dog), some snazzy socks, and two creator themed notebooks, one for your inner Pratchett, the other for your inner Gaiman.
*
THE HORSEMEN TIER (£500 GBP) is the Demon Tier + A3 Giclee print from the graphic novel, signed by Colleen Doran, plus the exclusive Beelzebub enamel pin, and Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett collector's enamel pin set.
*
THE OBSIDIAN TIER (£3k) builds on the Horsemen Tier with copies of the new, limited Obsidian editions (GO illustrated edition, graphic novel & William the Antichrist), signed by Neil Gaiman & artists, and a one-of-a-kind trading card by Colleen Doran.
*
For booksellers, we have two options: The Small Bookshop Tier (10 copies) and The Bookshop Tier (20 copies), both of which offer a 50% trade discount. There are also add ons of 10 and 20 copies for shops looking to order more.
*
ADD ONS
The campaign itself ends at 11.59pm UK time on 31 August, so there’s still time to get your pledges in. Let’s move onto the add ons via Kickstarter...
How do you add more to your pledge? This link on Kickstarter should help. You effectively re-select the tier you’ve chosen, and then it will take you to the add on section. This works even if your tier is sold out, or was time sensitive (Nightingale).
Unlike tiers, you are not limited to one choice with add ons. You can get additional copies of the graphic novel, mugs, slipcases, the graphic novel oversized edition, and more. Rachael Stott's Eternal Encounter print is available also.
*
A.Z. FELL & CO ADD ONS. Includes: Bookmark, mug, socks, tote bag. The bookmark is different / higher end than those included with every copy of the graphic novel.
*
TRADING CARDS. You can get a trading card booster pack. These will have at least six cards. The Hellhound Tier is where to get the larger, playable base pack. Base packs will be available down the road via the new merch store, but cheapest via the Kickstarter.
*
ENAMEL PIN ADD ONS We have two pairs of Aziraphale and Crowley pins (£10 per set). We also have mystery packs of three available (£12). You can see the full pin information and designs so far at http://goodomenshq.com.
*
While pins #005 onwards will be part of the mystery packs, they may pop up at events or in flash sales of specific items. We will give fans as much notice as possible when these exciting events will happen.
*
BOOKSHOP ADD ONS. Bookshops who have backed either of the retail tiers will be able to add packs of 10 or 20 additional books onto their pledge. These tiers must be delivered to a bookshop address. These are also at 50% trade discount.
*
OBSIDIAN ADD ONS. While the Obsidian Tier collects all three books, you can add the Obsidian Edition of the Good Omens illustrated edition, the Good Omens graphic novel, or William the Antichrist - signed by Neil - to pledges at any level.
*
Add ons are available for every tier level. Add ons will also be available after the Kickstarter, however will be cheapest via the campaign. We know a lot of people have been asking, so if 31 August is too short notice, worry not!
*
FAQ
Q: Will the graphic novel be available after the Kickstarter finishes? A: Yes. It will be available via PledgeManager, and subsequently on goodomenshq.com when that becomes the wider merch store.
Q: Will tiers be available after the Kickstarter finishes? A: Yes. Some will be available for an additional time on PledgeManager to allow those who couldn’t access the Kickstarter for a variety of reasons. This will go live at some point after the project finishes.
Q: Will the add ons be available after the Kickstarter finishes? A: Yes. Though Kickstarter will be the cheapest way to get the add ons, these will be made more widely available at a slight price increase after the campaign ends.
Q: I couldn’t back the Kickstarter due to payment issues. Can I use Paypal / other methods? A: We believe PledgeManager will be able to integrate the wider payment methods, including Paypal, for those who couldn’t back with a card. This is TBC. Longer term, this will be an option on goodomenshq.com when it opens as the official merch store.
Q: Shipping is charged after. Why do we not have the final numbers yet? A: We’ve been working across the campaign to bring estimates down further; the page will have new numbers as we have them pre-31 Aug, however we will be working over the coming months to get the best price for backers worldwide once the weights are locked in. Our goal is to get the best value for supporters and not overcharge by locking in this early.
Q: If it will all be available later, what difference is there in backing the Kickstarter? A: All backers get an individual discount code for the Good Omens HQ merch store when it opens in the future, so you can get money off further items. We’ve got some fun things that we’re planning to do via backer updates post-campaign too. More on that… later. You’ll still get plenty of ineffable joy either way though!
Q: Is there anywhere I can sign up for updates? A: Yes! Good Omens HQ will have a mailing list. You can sign up here.
Get yours here!

Good Omens Graphic Novel Masterpost ❤ 🐍😊

(you know how I like doing masterposts :)🥰 - I will update the masterpost as the kicstarter updates ❤)
What is Good Omens: the Official (and Ineffable) Graphic Novel?
The Good Omens: the Official (and Ineffable) Graphic Novel is the upcoming adaptation of the glorious 1990 Good Omens novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman in a graphic novel form. The adaptation is done by the talented Colleen Doran who worked with Neil on several other of his projects such as Chivalry, The Sandman, or Snow, Glass, Apples. The adaptation done under the gentle eyes of both Neil Gaiman and the Terry Pratchett Estate so don't worry that it will be unfaithful <3.

Video by Neil, Colleen and Rob :)
Rob Wilkins: Judgment day is almost upon us. One angel, one demon want to do something about it, but there's the small problem of the missing Antichrist.
Neil Gaiman: The good Omens Kickstarter - we've got a fabulous, glorious, amazing adaptation of Good Omens waiting for you in graphic novel form.
Rob: Neil Gaiman was the first person, the first journalist to interview Terry after the publication of The Colour of Magic. They stayed friends and Neil met Terry again and discussed the idea of this novel that he had that he really ought to get written down and he sent the idea through to Terry and a little while later Terry called him back and said: you bastard I want that idea for myself, and Terry offered to either buy the idea or to work with Neil on the project, and as Neil said at the time it would be like Michelangelo calling saying: here give me a hand to paint this ceiling, so of course Neil and Terry worked on it together.
Colleen Doran: Hi and welcome to my studio. I am pleased and excited beyond words to talk to you tonight about Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's good Omens the graphic novel adaptation. You have no idea how happy I am to be working on this aside from the fact that I get to sit around and draw Azirphale and Crowley all day and who wouldn't want that - oh this is fun this is pure candy and I'm working very very hard to bring you a faithful adaptation. I love this book I love this project and bringing it to you is pure joy. Thanks a lot for your support. Thank you.

“There is the dove, and there is the serpent.”
Or: understanding the meaning of Ellen, Thomas and Orlok love triangle in the 2024 “Nosferatu” adaptation.
“Love is the law, love under will. Nor let the fools mistake love; for there are love and love. There is the dove, and there is the serpent. Choose ye well!”
Aleister Crowley, “Book of the Law” (Thelema, occult system)
“He is Infinity… Eyes shining like a jewelled diadem. Putrescence. Asphyxience. Devourance.”
(Pigeons and doves are from the same family bird)
Herr Knock eats the head of the pigeon/dove in a very graphic way. Dr. Sievers asks him why he does this. There's no verbal explanation. The occult explanation it's him not choosing the "dove" in this Thelemic dichotomy of dove/serpent ("choose ye well!").
The “Dove” is religion and its worship. Crowley saw the "law of the dove” as repressed Christian love: pure and divine. It’s blind and obedient love, taught in religious circles, but also peaceful and harmonious, like the “Holy Spirit”. It’s brotherly love, as well. This is what Herr Knock rejects, and what Ellen has with Thomas and Anna.
Thomas and Ellen share pure and Christian love, sanctified by marriage, as they made a holy oath before God (sacrament).

“Our love was supposed to be sacred.”

"Thank you for loving me.”
The “Serpent” is Spirit with its devotion, wisdom and delight. While the “Dove” descends; the “Serpent” rises. It's the fire from below, kundalini (divine feminine energy from Hindu tantrism) ascending, it's Eros: erotic sexual love. It’s physical and animalistic expression of love. It’s ecstasy, passionate and hungry love. It’s spiritual and transformative love, the circle of life and death, and rebirth (immortality).

Ellen: “I have felt you like a serpent crawling in my body.”
Orlok: “It is not me. It is your nature.”
"My vocation is the Serpent", says Babalon (the deity Ellen is a earthly manifestation of). Which is why Orlok says "love" (as in "law of the dove") is inferior to Ellen. The “law of the serpent” is the love Ellen and Orlok share, it's beastly, sexual and ravishing love. As she tells Thomas: "You could never please me as he [Orlok] could."
But “love”, according to Aleister Crowley, is “harsh” as well, as he defines it as “love may best be defined as the passion of Hatred inflamed to the point of madness, when it takes refuge in Self-destruction.” Which explains why Ellen says she abhors (hates) Orlok: what they had was so intense and passionate “it turned to torture, it would kill me” (self-destruction) as she confesses to Thomas.
Orlok cannot love as in the "law of dove", he loves as in the "law of serpent" (“I cannot be sated without you”). Ellen, as a manifestation of Babalon, loves both ways, because the Dove (Thomas and Anna) is love, and the Serpent (Orlok) is love, too.
“Choose ye well!”

“You are not for the living. You are not for human kind. You shall be one with me ever-eternally […] Do you accept this, of your own will? […] Then the covenant is fulfilled. Your oath re-pledged […] As our spirits are one, so too shall be our flesh. You are mine.”

“I relinquished him my soul […] I am blasphemy.” Herr Knock fanatically begs Thomas to kill him
“Set free the daemon’s [demon] body!” Von Franz tells Thomas before they open Orlok sarcophagus

On the Cover of a Grimdark Magazine
Hey, Tumblr. Long time, no tumbl.
Just wanted to mention that the first-ever Gentlemen Bastards short story, "Locke Lamora and the Bottled Serpent," will be appearing as a two-part extravaganza in Grimdark Magazine's issues 40 and 41. Issue 40, GDM's tenth anniversary celebration, is available for you to grab right now:
bit.ly/GdM_Issue40

"Locke Lamora and the Bottled Serpent" returns us to Camorr some months after Locke's 13th birthday, which was described in the "Orphan's Moon" chapter of The Republic of Thieves. Locke, working as a bar-back in a rough-and-tumble Right People tavern, deals with some issues, including the fact that his only real friend on the premises is an aging mercenary named Mazoc Szaba who has an addiction to drinking poisonous wine for contests of chance. Since there are no flashbacks in Thorn, this story was the first time in quite a while I'd "gone back" to Camorr, and I found the experience pretty emotional. The good folks at GDM were lovely enough to give me this chance to play in their pages, so if you harbor any affection for Locke, give 'em a shot. The individual issue should be about $4, and also comes with a load of fiction and non-fiction from people including Anna Smith Spark, Mark Lawrence, Christopher Buehlman, Cat Rambo, and many others!
If you missed my August updates on novellas, signed bookplates, and other matters, check it all out at: http://www.scottlynch.us/updates.html
And hey, if you didn't see my short story "Selected Scenes From the Ecologies of the Labyrinth," published in the Sunday Morning Transport in July, give it a read! No charge.

Waiting - Adam - HH
!!SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!!
Author's note: Well as much spoilers as the Hazbin Leaks would give us, but just to be safe! I'm going to put the 'keep reading' before the spoilers.
This was inspired by the song Would You Fall In Love with Me Again? by Jorge Rivera-Herrans and Anna Lea Casey (The Ithaca Saga of Epic the Musical) and I started bawling listening to the whole saga.
I suggest listening to the song before or even during reading this cause it can give you the feeling you get when seeing your favourite show for the first time
SO! I hope ya'll cry too, I love the taste of angst 👌
CW: Angst with comfort, Major character death, hazbin hotel leaks
I am not the man you fell in love with I am not the man you once adored I am not your kind and gentle husband And I am not the love you knew before
Time moves differently in Heaven.
When Lute came to you in the middle of the night with a tourniquet and a missing arm, you knew that Hell won. She held you as you both cried on the ground over Adam’s halo, dull and missing its light.
You remember screaming into the ground as if hell’s princess has killed you herself. Your heart shattering at your husband’s demise.
It rained heavily for the first time in eons, as if the Father himself weeps for his first created son.
Would you fall in love with me again If you knew all I've done? The things I can't undo I am not the man you knew I know that you've been waiting, waiting
Days have blurred together, the Seraphims and cherubs taking care of you in your tender state. The halo of your husband minimized into a bracelet so you may always have a piece of him on you. You were so angry, so lonely, so confused on why he left you.
Your grief knows no bounds, the smile that you once have has not reached your eyes in a while. Always hiding away as Heaven didn’t seem so much of a paradise to you anymore.
Abel, the one you treated as a son, grown as he is, escorted you to your seat in Adam’s counsel box, before leaving you alone to move to his seat, awaiting an emergency meeting.
You did not want to come as the last time you did, you knew of your husband’s secrets, bringing forth a big fight.
What kinds of things did you do?
The guilt of pretending to sleep when he left for the last time almost ate you alive.
You could still feel the soft kiss on your cheek and a whisper of love before he took flight.
"I love you...my sun"
You wish you could’ve said it back.
You remembered the fight vividly, how he yelled and begged you to understand that all of this was to protect you. If his own flesh and blood was killed by a demon spawn, he would never forgive himself if the fallen snake could rise and take you too.
You wished you could’ve heard him out, to understand but the image of those souls screaming and begging for their lives as his army took them down was too terrifying to ignore.
When the speaker of God came from above, you gasped when you finally noticed the serpent in chains in the middle of the court.
It told of its sins in the mortal world, bringing its guilt to the grave. Tears of shame cleansing him of his sins begging the court for forgiveness.
You felt the light wash over you as you grip the edge of the boxseat, listening to the serpent, Sir Pentious, be forgiven by the speaker closest to God.
Adam was…wrong? Both sides were scared. It was only Heaven that attacked first? All in the name of an assumption. You’ve heard of the Queen of Demons and her song of deceit , the first woman. You don’t become the first man’s wife without hearing about the last two.
You saw Lute point to you, crazed that these disgusting sinners should be forgiven. You paid her no mind, only seeing the Sir Pentious.
Lute was taken away, kicking and screaming, for counseling. You almost felt sorry for her. Adam helped her break away from being another blank face in the army. Bringing individuality to his girls to the point they developed their own likes and dislikes, dreams and personality.
His death caused righteous anger with no way to quell the flames.
You prayed Abel can tame the wildfires.
Left a trail of red on every island As I traded friends like objects I could use Hurt more lives than I can count on my hands But all of that was to bring me back to you
The Sir Pentious was under constant watch, he cannot be left alone always having two cherubs on his shoulders for supervision.
You visited him in his workshop, accompanied by Emily the younger Seraphim who trusted the serpent at first sight.
“You were redeemed…”
“Yesss...?”
“Forgive my husband for…hurting you and your friends”
Tears rolled down your cheeks as Sir Pentious wrapped you in his slender arms, saying that he would’ve done the same thing if it meant protecting the ones he loved.
You felt your heart mending itself slowly as you cried the darkness away in his arms, slowly letting hope back inside.
Would you fall in love with me again If you knew all I've done? The things I can't undo I am not the man you knew I know that you've been waiting, waiting
His clawed hands gently strung his guitar, his voice softly echoing as he sang his ballad into the red night. Heart heavy with lament as he finally truly accepted his fate.
The eye of heaven was beautiful in the dark red sky. Golden heaven-borne eyes constantly following the rings spin in its orbit day after day. How long has it been? Will heaven ever forgive him?
Will you ever forgive him…
I will fall in love with you over and over again I don't care how, where, or when No matter how long it's been, you're mine Don't tell me you're not the same person You're always my husband and I've been waiting, waiting
Would he ever know that you were singing the same song as him?
In the same balcony the first time you sang a duet together?
You have worked with Emily for the redemption of souls. If Sir Pentious can do it, only the truly repentant can so as well.
Adam’s army has trouble accepting Abel as their new leader but some as came forward to continue Adam’s legacy.
Waiting, waiting Waiting, waiting Waiting, oh For you
As you stared into the stars you wondered when your Adam will come back.
Some may have whispered behind your back that it is only the grief talking but you know your bull-headed husband.
He will come back and you’ll be here waiting for him.
You turned around quick, the twang of a guitar hitting the floor upon seeing who would open the balcony doors.
Is it you? Have my prayers been answered? Is it really you standing there or am I dreaming once more? You look different, your eyes look tired Your frame is lighter, your smile torn Is it really you, my love?
“My light, my sun…”
*sniffles*

Exile: A Nosferatu Fanfic

Chapter 11
I think I’ve seen this film before, so I’m leaving out the side door…
A sort of peace reigned between them, if it could even be called that. Ellen was giving him space, some time to process everything he had told her. Things were going to be tense for a while, and they both understood that. They needed time to process, time to think things over. And there was plenty of that to go around.
She was patient. Ellen would be out on the castle grounds with the hounds, playing in the snow, or reading aloud to them as they followed her around. All the while, Orlok would watch from a distance. He didn’t feel like he was allowed to join, though the thought was an enticing one. Even if it was to be close, he felt the need to be…
But he held back. He still feared that his grief, his anger, could disrupt her peace. And the gods knew Ellend deserved some kind of peace. Him not so much. Or at least that was what he thought…
Pain existed in a cycle. There were many ways to deal with grief, with the pain that came with it. One could learn to cope with it, talk with someone and let themselves feel it. Grow around it, because that was inevitable anyway no matter what path was taken. Or, one could let that pain consume them, destroy them, fester from the inside out. This was probably the most self destructive way to deal with loss, with pain. This was when one allowed themselves to drown in the depths of their despair and feel like there wasn’t a way out. Ultimately it led to one's own destruction, either by their own hand or a foolish decision made with the intent to stop the pain rather than grow around it. The last was what Orlok felt he did. He weaponized that pain. He turned it into something he could use to protect himself so he wouldn’t have to feel it. But that pain was a serpent’s fang in that case, a two way sword. The pain he felt, he inflicted it on to others, on to the world, to make them all feel as he did. In essence, when one did this, they passed a tiny fraction of that pain on to someone, everyone else.
And he had passed that pain on to Ellen, and not even a small fraction of it. But rather most of it. Hell, she died because of it. Because he couldn’t handle it. Perhaps he was indeed drowning in his own despair over his lost family. In that case his grief was destructive all around. It hurt everyone, including her.
The only solution was to let go…
“Liev…Liev darling…”.
Orlok growled. “Nu esti aici…”.
“Love…come to us. We’re waiting…Join us…”.
He shook his head. “No…no…”
“Orlok?” Ellen’s voice pulled him back.
He knew then it was Chaos that was calling him. Now he was becoming more susceptible to its call. Damn it, he was supposed to be stronger than this. He shook his head, coming back to himself.
“Did you…need something?” he asked.
“Are you alright? You seemed…off?”.
He couldn’t lie to her. He sat down at the table, across from her. Orlok took a breath. “I keep hearing her. She calls from Chaos to me”.
Ellen frowned softly. “I hear it too. Only sometimes, it’s with the voices of my family. Sometimes it’s my mother, other times papa…sometimes I even hear Thomas or Anna…”.
“Chaos uses every voice you’ve ever heard, favoring those one is closest to, in order to lure them into its waters”.
“Is that where we’re meant to go?” Ellen asked.
“Someday. But not now. And I will before you I’d imagine”.
“What?! No!” Ellen reached over and put her hand over his, “I’m not going without you! If you go then so do I! I won’t be alone here!” she declared.
Orlok looked surprised at that. She wanted to go into the waters of Chaos…with him? When he went? He blinked in surprise.
“Ellen…Micul Suflet…”.
Her eyes found his. “Promise me…Don’t leave me alone again? Please…please don’t abandon me again”.
“You’d rather be with me than…be alone?” he asked.
“I don’t know if I could bear it if I was” Ellen admitted, her tone sad but honest, “I would be truly alone here without you. I feel like…like I would be incomplete”.
Orlok frowned and looked at her soft pale hand over his clawed one. He closed his eyes, let out a breath from his nose, and looked at her again. She had the same expression, but a little more tender.
“Promise me…promise me you’ll fight it? You’ll stay with me?”.
He hesitated, turning his hand over and holding it gently, his long fingers wrapping around hers. “I will stay…I will do my damndest to fight it. That at least I can do”.
Ellen smiled kindly. “Thank you…And I’ll stay as long as I can for you”.
“Thank you, little one. Give us both something to resist the call for”.
“Why would you go before me?” Ellen asked.
“Because it’s been so long. Soon I will be forgotten by all…and my presence no longer felt in the world of the living…”.
“Is that how it works? We submit to Chaos and the living world forgets us?”.
“Other way around. When the world forgets us, the call will be too strong to ignore. But I do promise…I will keep fighting it for you, through everything. You won’t be alone again. And neither will I”.
She held his hand and brought it to her lips softly. “Never again. I promise”.
A comfortable silence reigned around them. For a short while, the world felt warmer instead of colder for once…
If you guys enjoyed please consider liking, reblogging and commenting! If you wanna see more consider following me please! I got another fic in the works after this and I'd hate for yall to miss out ^^ have an awesome day, and please know you're loved <3

Devilman Crybaby meets Marvel’s Venom in Exordia, the science fiction debut of Seth Dickinson, author of The Traitor Baru Cormorant.
