Round 2 Final Stats:
Previously I said any group to earn over 900 points will move on to Round 3, however, I’m going to make it the Top 10 just to make it even. Plus, what’s an extra two species?
For the final stats, I’ve made a little graphic with some doodles to remind y’all what each class is. (Couldn’t use emojis for everyone because, alas, there are not enough unique ones to represent all these animal groups!) The full list is typed out under the read more though, as well as the extra stats for this round!
The top classes (or phylogenetic equivalents) have been ranked thusly, listed here from highest ranking to lowest:

Whumptober 2023 Day 11
Prompt: animal trap
Victim: Twilight
Words: 954
Notes: I couldn't not think of Twilight. Legend is an option, because bunny, but like... Twilight.
Hyrule had gone over the dangers of his era with them more than once. At this point, the younger heroes could recite his short speech by heart, and the older ones were more than familiar with all the details. However, Twilight noted with horror stilling his chest, he hadn't mentioned the traps.
Ordon had its fair share of hunters, but traps had long been outlawed, and any traps that had been left behind accidentally? No one was going to miss them if Twilight donated them to the local blacksmith to make horseshoes out of.
Maybe he secretly had a petty side, but no one needed to know that.
Regardless, Hyrule had either forgotten to tell them about the traps in the area they were camping in, or he didn't know. At the moment, Twilight didn't particularly care because his leg was all but snapped in two at this point.
The bad news was that it was his right hind leg, which meant that the injury would carry over and impede his mobility as a Hylian. He'd still be able to fight, but he'd need a splint at the very least.
The blood running down his leg was warm, and it matted his fur, the sharp scent filling the air. He wasn't very far from camp, but he was afraid that the smell of blood would attract monsters, and that was the last thing he wanted to deal with right now.
Unfortunately, didn't seem like he had a choice. A blue octorok slowly shuffled through the undergrowth, and Twilight froze, holding his breath and hoping that it didn't notice him only a few feet away. Just as he began to slowly release the air in his lungs, it turned in his direction and made direct eye contact with him.
He felt his stomach drop.
The octorok's gelatinous legs scurried, making it skitter jerkily forwards, like some kind of twisted combination of spider and octopus. Twilight tensed, wincing as the movement increased the pain in his leg, but pushing it down through adrenaline and pure fear.
It paused, moving its head from side to side a little bit before crouching and Twilight lunged to the side, the flying rock careening past his head with a whistle into the undergrowth.
The octorok, sensing that its prey was making an attempt at escape, began sluggishly pulling itself in his direction while he did his best to yank his leg free and avoid the projectiles aimed at his vulnerabilities.
He didn't want to injure his leg any further for fear of losing it, but he wasn't stupid. Any monster could kill a Hylian, no matter if they were a hero of courage or not. And a wolf only had a big of a chance of survival as a Hylian.
He was going to have to accept the risk of losing his leg permanently if he wanted to live.
With newly found determination, he made one last bid for freedom, finally getting the leverage he needed to scrape his leg out of the trap. It would haunt him for a long time afterwards, even if he was so distressed from bloodloss and pain that his mind refused to keep the memory of what precisely happened.
All he knew was that he was bracing himself for what would probably be the most pain he would ever be in, and then he was staring at fallen leaves coated with thick, congealed blood and chunks of octorok flesh.
The pain was… well, he would never have the right words to say how much it hurt, the only thing he could say was that he prayed during the entire time it took for him to weakly drag himself back to the camp because it hurt so much that only the patron goddess of his race could possibly help him now.
His awareness sort of… swam, like the way everything in his vision did. Nothing seemed real, except for the ever present scent of blood and flesh in his nose. He couldn't navigate, his senses almost completely washed away in the wake of his injury, but he could feel a small tug in his heart, pulling him towards a distant sense of safety.
He didn't know when he gave up, but he did know that he thought he was staring at leaves, then a Hylian face, and then… then there was a strange drowsiness pulling him to sleep. He probably should be worried, but… well… he didn't exactly care what happened at this point as long as he didn't wake up to that goddesses-forsake pain.
Blessedly, he didn't. The pain was still present, and goodness, it was present. But it wasn't the kind of pain that stripped him of everything. It was the sort of pain that reminded you that you were alive in a good way, not a wishing you were dead way.
He faded in and out of that odd variation of consciousness for a while before his senses began coming back to him. There were soft sounds, voices, birds, the breeze. His groggy mind couldn't make sense of anything, so he focused on the other things. There were the scents of Hylians, things that were probably medicines and chemicals, plants he couldn't remember the names of. Something firm was below him, and something soft was above him. He was a pleasant temperature, kept warm by the soft things and cool by the air.
His ear twitched involuntarily as a gentle hand ran over it, and he couldn't find it within himself to bother with staying awake. As long as the kids were behaving, he would take the opportunity to nap. Ordon only knew how much sleep he'd lost to the stinking gremlins.

Kekkai Sensen - clothing colors
I’m slowly working my way through some Kekkai Sensen meta. Currently, my focus is mainly on Steven and K. K. since they interest me the most. I’ve got a K. K. meta in the works which needs some time to gel in my mind as I gather all the panels so I’m going to work on the wardrobe one first.
What really caught my eye early on with Kekkai Sensen was how vibrant and distinct the outfits were. I became curious why they would choose certain colors for their normal work attire and how that was linked to both their own personalities.
So let’s start with Steven A. Starphase and K. K. Now, keep in mind the logic around colors isn’t exact and different people have slightly different ways to interpret them but have a general vibe that does overall seem to capture the intent.
K. K. - Red & Black
For this, I’m showing both the anime and manga depictions since there are some differences which do subtly change how we can read their outfits.
In the anime, K. K. wears a dark red duster coat that is tight around the bust and just above the waist but flares out at the collar and hips. The anime makes it a dark burgundy color while the manga leans more towards a brighter shade of red. That brighter shade is clearly her link to Vash’s own design in Trigun.
Her only other color is black, wearing thigh high black leather boots, black leather shorts and a black crop top as she has a bare midriff. Her eye patch is also black and her gloves are a mix of finger less and not. The metal around fingers is likely how she’s able to electrify her bullets when using her 954 Blood Bullet Arts. These two colors work well with her physical appearance with her light blue eye, blonde hair and fair complexion.
Other than a few areas of exposed skin, for the most part she is covered with long sleeves and likely her gloves are long as well since we never see her exposed wrist. Actually, since Yasuhiro Nightow isn’t one to make his characters fan service, no one in the entire cast of Kekkai Sensen is shown without clothing other than Zapp. And those instances are when he’s having a good time with some ladies but his work attire is as conservative as everyone else’s.
What can we generally conclude about her two colors of choice for work?
Red - This is the most powerful color that you can wear. It is vibrant and energetic, associated with love. It is also linked to strength and resilience and passion. By wearing a long red coat, K. K. makes her intentions know to others that she is here to do a job and she will get it done. As the only member of Libra that is known to have a family and they are one of the motivating factors for her to continue to do her job, she is literally wearing her emotions on her entire jacket. I do not think that K. K. is wearing red for any sort of sex appeal. This is a married woman and mother of two. Her husband is amazingly supportive and she’s not insecure in her place and with her image, though one should not say rude things about her physical appearance. Right, Daniel Law?
K. K. likely also wants her red jacket to let others know that she is indeed dangerous if you were to be on the wrong side of her. Since she is the firearms wielder and sniper for the team it would make sense for her to give warning to others to not mess with her.
Black - Is a color that has far too many ways to interpret it honestly. In this case, I’d hypothesize that the black is supposed to show the strength of her and power along with competence. K. K. is in a typical male role, therefore, it would make sense she’d borrow black as a classic men’s dress color to emphasize her own power and abilities. It has the feeling of seriousness and competence as well has a slimming effect. Seeing that her guns have skulls on them, she is likely borrowing the meaning of death associated with it as she will deliver death to those with her shots.
As a combination, red and black convey a sense of power and determination as well as professionalism from her. The colors also look good on her. She has a very similar color scheme to that of Klaus other than his crisp white dress shirt which really works for both of them.
Everything about her overall looks says that she cares deeply about others, takes her job seriously, wants to protect them, is passionate and emotional and loves deeply. It really does convey many of her key points as a character up to this point in the manga.
Steven A. Starphase - Grey, Dark/Royal Blue & Yellow
Again, I’m showing the difference between the anime and manga where the anime sometimes leans more towards a charcoal grey than the medium/light grey of the manga.
However, in the regular pages of the manga, we can read Steven’s suit to be much lighter than in the anime which frequently leans quite dark.
Grey - For men’s suits in particular it is seen as an excellent choice for those in business; it gives off maturity, intelligence, composure, practicality and consistency. Interestingly the negatives of grey are that it can appear to be cold, bland, apathetic and sterile.
However, charcoal grey and light grey have different meanings. The more charcoal grey of the anime is more serious and gives an ability to stand out and blend in at the same time. It is shown as being close to black but more approachable and conservative and classic. It is also associated with loyalty and dependability.
Light grey is perceived to be cool and casual making the wearing look more contemporary and stylish. The light grey in the manga also makes his dark blue shirt look more dynamic like it is in contrast to the lighter color of the suit.
Blue - Is another color associated with loyalty and dependability. In the anime he has his royal blue shirt while depending on the manga artwork his shirt is between royal blue and midnight blue. Unlike grey, blue has few negative connotations only being linked to shyness (or perhaps privacy in his case?) and coldness. What a man who uses the Esmeralda Blood Freeze is cold? I can’t imagine that . . .
The positive associations in addition to his utmost loyalty to Libra and Klaus as well as his job as the organizer makes him indispensable as the second in command, are as follows.
Friendliness, calm, honesty, trustworthiness, intelligence, success, control, independence, truth, wisdom and other positive traits. All in all blue conveys that he’s a person with a good work ethic and approachable.
Now, we know that Steven can’t be 100% honest and those he trusts he has absolute unquestionable trust in them. However, if he does not trust you he really does not trust you. How much of his choice of blue is likely to make him effective in his role dealing with so many others across the city and also doing his best that the team understands how much he does to support them.
Another thing to note is that of the chapter ‘Midnight Blue’ from Back 2 Back is where he catches Garrett for interrogation as a rat on his team who was involved in the trap that seriously injured Zapp and Zed. It may be referring to the color of his shirt, the fact that he can only do such acts with his team during the dark of night, or some combination of these two concepts.
What is most interesting that that the combination of blue and grey give him the ability to present himself as loyal, dependable, hardworking and intelligent. On the flip side, he’s cold, sarcastic, pragmatic and sometimes struggles to connect with others on an emotional level.
But let’s not forget his trademark yellow tie!
Yellow - Is a color that is in general very positive in its associations. It is seen as happy, cheerful, courageous, exciting, creative and casual. I think this is another way where he tries to look approachable and to give him some warmth that is lacking in the grey suit. It seems like a sort of odd choice, but works exceptionally well with his blue and grey. I think it really is an attempt by him to appear friendly and more approachable due to his somewhat detached and cool demeanor.
With how cold and calculating he can be at times as well as his deep loyalty to the team and their cause, I have no doubt that his color choices are how he likes to project himself to his colleagues.
What is most interesting is the contrast between Steven and K. K. and how they are partners most of the time during missions and fights.
K. K. has very vibrant and eye catching colors making her very visible. Meanwhile, Steven has calm and neutral colors that allow for him to blend in and look less noticeable. This may help to take away from the visible part of his tattoo and his facial scar to make him look serious and trustworthy but not threatening.
Many of the Libra members stand out visually, but K. K. and Steven are the two who have clear battle scars on their faces and this would clearly impact others how they see them and react to them. I think that this feeds into their sartorial choices where K. K. goes for flare to take the gaze away from her eye patch while Steven tries to give an air of trustworthiness and calm. They’ve paid their dues as fang hunters and are more experienced and in a way more determined than ever to do their jobs well.
It lastly feeds into that nice fire and ice dynamic as they banter with each other in a sort of old married couple way - I mean like a work couple obviously since K. K. is actually married.
Well, that’s all I have for this quick little meta.

hello! i love your gifs. how do you make them look so good? what settings do you use in photoshop? i'm a beginner when it comes to gifs and i could use some help!
How 'bout go fuck yaself, huh?!
Just kidding. Hello! Thank you for the message, I am easily swayed to do anything in the name of praise. Before I get started, although by the time you've read this I've already finished, feel free to IM me and I would be happy to very finely detail explicitly how I do things for anyone with the nose for knowledge in GIF making.
The first and most important thing is to capture whatever you can in as high as quality it comes in. 720p? Don't even waste my time. So anyways, you've got your crispy beautiful animation imported, it's time to resize it.
The two important things are to go slightly over the final canvas size you want (500px wide) and to adjust the resample to Bicubic Sharper (or Bicubic, I don't notice any difference). I'm sure it's not universally the best option to use Bicubic Sharper but I've never bothered double checking. Then adjust the canvas size, knock off at least 2 pixels to trim a pixel from the top, bottom, and sides of the GIF. Since GIFs are binary with their transparency, when you resize it the edges can get ugly-looking as some pixels are 100% opacity and some are 0% opacity, that's why I crop that extra pixel from each side. I happen to be using a pretty poor example with my Slam Dunk GIF I'm making since it's not a standard 16:9 ratio, so mine will actually be cropped to 500x268 instead of a standard 500x280. If you're working on something that's 4:3 which is like old school anime style, crop it before adjusting the image size so it's 1440x1080, then resize it and it should be 502x377, to which you would then crop it to 500x375. I actually often crop even wide screen things to a 4:3 ratio because it's usually just unnecessary space on the sides and it makes our focal point pop more!
This is less relevant with digital animation, it's much cleaner and doesn't have as much noise, but if we're in our hand-drawn era, frames be shakin' and grainy! We only have 256 colours so any non-vital frames should be removed so they're not hogging up our sharp colours. I have quite a small GIF here, 36 frames is no big deal, so the quality won't be necessarily important, but if you're doing something that's 200 frames it'll definitely losing a bit of colour and wasting a tonne of space.
Again, a tiny 36 frame gif isn't the best, but by picking out shaky frames or ones that have blips you can see a bit of a contrast difference specifically in the clouds in this example thanks to having those extra colours, and the start of the GIF doesn't shake as much. The first GIF is also twice the size (1.92 MB vs 954 KB) which means I could make a GIF twice as long with doing this before worrying about size issues. This is what my final timeline looks like:
Beyond that, I wouldn't really do anything. I specifically adjusted each frame to match the original speed just so they would sync up the same for my comparison but normally I would have just re-timed every frame to be 0.12 seconds and adjust it using my own personal eye test to see if I think anything needs to be sped up or can be cut out even further.
You can also add some overlay adjustments if you want, depending on the show I'll bother with that but usually it affects the quality, but dark scenes can sometimes need it. The only four I ever touch are brightness/contract, vibrance, hue/saturation, and colour balance. I don't have any specific numbers I use, I just slide them around until I'm happy with the result. Ultimately, I like to just keep shows as they were originally because my main goal is archival of things I like, but it can be nice to add some pop with brighter colours on shows with a dull palette. But yeah, feel free to message me in IM if you want more help. I'll help with a specific GIF so what I've said is maybe a little easier to understand how to apply things. There's lots of more other things you can do if you are more dedicated like blurs and sharpens but I don't really bother with that anymore.
#i'm very tired so i tried to proof read but am giving up half way#my eyes can't manage any longer#hopefully this makes sense

Round 2 - Arthropoda - Malacostraca
(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Malacostraca is the second largest class of crustaceans, and what most people picture when they hear the word crustacean! It contains over 40,000 species separated into 17 orders: Leptostraca, Stomatopoda (“Mantis Shrimp”), Decapoda (“Crabs”, “Lobsters”, “Crayfish”, “Shrimp”, and “Prawns”), Euphausiacea (“Krill”), Thermosbaenacea, Mysida (“Opossum Shrimp”), Stygiomysida, Lophogastrida, Spelaeogriphacea, Mictacea, Bochusacea, Cumacea (“Hooded/Comma Shrimp”), Tanaidacea, Amphipoda, Isopoda, Anaspidacea, and Bathynellacea. Many are scavengers, some are predators, some are herbivores, some are filter feeders, and some are parasites.
Malacostracans live worldwide, in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments, and have a large diversity of body forms. They are united by their segmentation of 20-21 body segments divided into a 5-segmented head, an 8-segmented thorax, and a 6-segmented abdomen with a telson, except in Leptostraca which has 7 abdominal segments. They have a pair of jointed appendages on each abdominal segment, though some groups have lost them secondarily. In some, three thoracic segments may be fused with the head to form a cephalothorax, the associated legs becoming maxillipeds. They have two pairs of antennae, which often branch into two parts. Their mouthparts have a pair of mandibles, maxillules, and maxillae. Many taxa have compound eyes on moveable stalks. Some have a carapace which covers the head, part or all of the thorax and some of the abdomen. The carapace may be fused with some of the thoraacic segments or hinged with two parts. This is one of the most diverse classes in the animal kingdom, and their anatomy and behavior would be hard to summarize further in just one paragraph!
The oldest malacostracans are the Leptostracans, which first appeared as fossils from the Cambrian period.
Propaganda under the cut:
“Carcinisation” has become a meme meaning “everything becomes crab”, but it actually only refers to the phenomenon of decapods convergently evolving crab-like anatomy. The Infraorder Brachyura contains the “True Crabs”, but at least 5 groups of unrelated decapods have evolved similar anatomy: a flat and broad cephalothorax.
Stomatopods (“Mantis Shrimp”) are known for their excellent color vision, but they probably can not actually see “shrimp colors.” They can see ultraviolet and polarized light, but their excess of photoreceptor cells actually lets them process their environment faster than we can, rather than differentiate between a multitude of different colors. This allows them to have quick reaction times, either to escape predators, fight or flee from rivals, or strike at their prey with amazing speed.
Malacostraca contains the largest living arthropods: the Japanese Spider Crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) with a legspan of up to 4 metres (13 ft) long, and the American Lobster (Homarus americanus), which can get up to 20 kilograms (44 lb).
Many species of malacostracans are commonly kept as pets, including crabs, crayfish, shrimp, mantis shrimp, and isopods.
Cute creb eat a cherry:
