something random based off of the effects you can get by drawing on toned paper cause that’s what we’ve been working on in my drawing class lately~
[ID: A digital drawing of Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens. They sit in black and white, at a table eating lunch. Crowley watches Aziraphale eat a slice of cake with a smile. /End ID.]

Hi, I appreciate all the time you put into this blog and everything that you do.
I was wondering if you had any fic recommendations where Aziraphale can't say "I love you"?
Like, after years of being afraid of Heaven finding out he just has a really hard time saying it? I know it’s oddly specific, but I figured I'd ask. Thank you so much for your time. Have a lovely day. <3
Hello! You can check our #denial of feelings tag for fics along these lines. Here are some where Aziraphale struggles to express his feelings for Crowley...
the one where aziraphale can't say I love you by assbuttsinlove (G)
aziraphale wants to say I love you but he can't. but he really really wants to. so crowley helps. first kisses and fluff. and a touch of angst.
E pesa come l'anima by D20Owlbear (G)
[3 + 2 +1] Three times Aziraphale never began the words, two times he fails to get them out, and one time he finally managed it. I love you hung heavy in Aziraphale's chest like an ornament on a too-small, too-barren tree, dragging down the branches with the weight and intensity of it until it nearly falls and shatters into pieces and rips itself from his lips. But instead he said, "Or I'll never speak to you again!" And that was almost the same, and he knew Crowley heard it too. That Crowley heard I'll never speak to you again and knew it meant I don't dare lose you, I love you. But then the world didn't end and he wasn't shipped off to his platoon and he was with Crowley still, his oldest and best friend in any world there might ever be and… he still couldn't say it. He's had thousands of years to practice beating it down, to keep it to himself, to only let Crowley know of his affection in the most roundabout of ways, and only a few months to unlearn it all. But, Crowley deserved more than that. Aziraphale deserved more than that too!
But The Smoke Clears When You're Around by midnightdragons (T)
“Mhm,” Crowley mumbled, before closing his eyes, curling back up around Aziraphale, and promptly falling back to sleep, one hand hooked loosely around the angel’s middle, his face pressed into his chest. Aziraphale looked down at him, his heart seizing in his chest, and gently hugged him close. “You are silly, my sweet boy,” he whispered breathlessly, sparing a single chaste kiss to the demon’s forehead. “And I . . .” Love you, he wanted to say. Wanted so badly to say it, to reveal it to the world, if only for a single moment.
After the Armageddon that wasn't, Crowley can't rid himself of the trauma caused by a certain event, and shields himself with defensive anger and a mask of irritation. Aziraphale convinces him that it's okay to rest and recover. (Alternatively: purely sleepy intimacy, comfort, and fluff, accompanied by the lingering scent of smoke in a bookshop.)
Definitions of Love by organizechaos (T)
Aziraphale thinks that all the abuse and trauma he endured in heaven is ‘love’. After being freed after the apocalypse, the angel is beyond happy. He wants nothing more than to spend eternity with Crowley but the demon is ready to put a name to their feelings. They both know that they care for each other deeply and when Crowley finally has the courage to put it in words (‘I love you’), it sends Aziraphale spiraling into believing Crowley will start treating him like heaven did. "We- we don't have to pretend anymore.” Crowley stuttered out, golden eyes looking frantically about the angel. His sunglasses were clutched tightly in the palm of his hand, “The apocalypse is over, it has been for years. Can't we- can't we say it now?" his voice wavered only slightly. "I don't love you, Crowley." Aziraphale emphasized each word to better help the demon understand. He had never truly loved something in all his years of existence, he didn’t think he was capable. To love another being — especially Crowley... "I could never love you."
An Angel and a Demon Dined at the Ritz (And Everything Went Downhill from There) by AshCommaMan (T)
Always offering. Always asking a question he must know will only ever get a “no” in response. And yet he asks anyway. “Anywhere you want to go.” You know I would do anything for you. “You go too fast for me, Crowley.” You deserve better than what I can give you. All that, and still, nothing has changed. In which Aziraphale must stop running from his feelings, or risk losing his best friend forever.

The Nightingale DID Sing! (Hope & Reassurance)
Part 7 of 8 in The Chess Moves Theory Set by @wistfulnightingale.
Tumblr media
Crowley broke our hearts when he said, "No Nightingales." And then The Kiss did us in. But moments later, the nightingale DOES sing. We're distracted, emotionally and visually, and we're meant to miss that moment. It's part of a series of complicated chess moves that are happening between Our Ineffables and the Metatron. (See The Chess Moves Theory Set for the full explanation on that.)
The singing nightingale was discovered by others long before I found it. It's not my idea, and I'm not claiming it. But I don't think it's well known or well circulated, at least not recently, so I thought it was important to talk about it again and include it here. (My search attempts couldn't find anyone who thought the birdsong was a nightingale. I'd love to give proper credit, so if you've run across this before and can let me know where, I'd be grateful!)
It always struck me that Crowley specifically mentioned Nightingales. If they are not actually a couple, if they don't have an "Our Song", why does he even think to say that? We were told (by God as narrator) about the nightingale singing in Berkeley Square, but Our Ineffables weren't! I believe it's because they've been a romantic couple since the bus stop (see An Old Married Couple for more thoughts on this). "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" is Their Song. It has been since they dined at the Ritz, with that song being played on the Grand Piano. (I have a headcannon about 1941, but that's another story!)
Under the street noise, as Crowley goes out the door in the Final 15, the Nightingale is singing for them again!
I think Crowley miracled the nightingale song there, as a reassuring message for Aziraphale. Not only as an affirmation of their Love, but as a quiet battle cry. When he said "No Nightingale's," Crowley was saying, "Pay attention, Angel. Listen for when I remind you that it's gonna be okay. We'll fool the bastard yet."
And the audio of a nightingale song is there... Hidden under layers of distraction, but actually there.
When a nightingale sings, there is a combination of melody and clicking sounds. Sometimes it is melody followed by a distinct series of rapid clicks that resembles buzzing or whirring. This buzzing sounds so mechanical that it may remind a person of a typewriter, or a street sound. You can listen to it here, in this YouTube video: Singing NIGHTINGALE-the best BIRD SONG.
Even with earbuds or headphones on, it is difficult to focus on the birdsong in the scene, especially the buzzing part that distinguishes a nightingale from other birds.. It can be heard at regular volume, though. I'm sorry I don't know how to make an audio clip for you!
Tumblr media
"I Forgive You." "Don't Bother." We're still emotionally reeling, focused on the pain in their faces. Crowley strides towards the door, pulls it open, the familiar bell on the door tinkles. The camara cuts to Aziraphale, his stammering lips. As we are focusing on his sounds, trying to make out barely-breathed words, the Nightingale sings, a sweet twittering chirp, starting at 47:30. At around 47:32, the buzzing part of the call is heard. By 47:33, the sound ends, the door slams shut, and we're sobbing and trying to pull ourselves together, right along with Aziraphale.
The entire thing goes by in 3 seconds.
In the recent YouTube video by MyWorldIsSpinning, BirgitPa talks about "Nightingale" as possibly being a code word between Our Ineffables:
Did Crowley and Aziraphale fool The Metatron? | Scene Reflection
I'm completely on board that SOMETHING happened during The Kiss, and I love their theory that "No nightingales" was a pre-determined code that helped Azi know what was about to happen.
........
There's also a fascinating discovery/analysis by @sendarya on her Youtube channel about the nightingale song.
Good Omens || End Credit SECRET || A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
She demonstrates how, if you overlay the song to match with its brief play in the Bentley, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" corresponds with the timing of the ending sequence as if made for it! Another (hopefully hopeful?) Clue?
Look for the rest of the Chess Moves Theory Set at @wistfulnightingale to see how I think it all might fit together, in a step by step breakdown.
Thanks for joining me on this crazy ride!

Metatron's Evil Plan
Starting with Gabriel's trial. Metatron said, "No speeches Gabriel you're not going to Hell.
Tumblr media
He then adds "which there isn't."
It would obviously be an issue if Heaven were to be viewed as problematic and out of control, with fallen angels left, right and centre. So they tried to manage Gabriel, make it so he just faded from his place of power, but he outsmarted them. And suddenly there were two former high-up's down on earth, and we all saw just how desperate they were to get Gabriel back. It's clearly A Concern.
So unfortunately Gabriel has escaped from their clutches, with a Prince of Hell no less.
Tumblr media
Very much not a good look. So Heaven needs to act and it needs to be now. Mere minutes after Gabriel and Beelzebub leave together, Metatron is on earth.
Then he goes to the coffee shop. He asks Nina, "Do people ever ask for Death?" and the subtitles were capitalised which I do think further supports my point. We already know that seeing Death is a bad omen, since at the end of Season One right after they saw him they were both dragged away to their would-be permanent discorporations.
Tumblr media
There is also something to be said for the mirroring of the first season and second season. I've seen theories, as well as noticed myself that many things line up. I can't find the post that laid a lot of things out but here's a few that I've noticed.
The mention of Death in the final episode, right before something bad happens (they both get taken to be punished/Aziraphale leaves Earth.)
Aziraphale and Crowley both holding someone's hands with the person in between them (Adam in S1E6 and Jimbriel in season 2, episode one or two i can't remember which)
The Nightingale reference. Pretty obvious, but ending the season on that song holds significance. I think most people have seen the theory that that's a message from Aziraphale, but I won't go into that here or this will never end.
Tumblr media
The nightingales plus the plans to go to the Ritz being gone I think is definitely symbolic of the fact that they've lost something. Again, an obvious option, but it's an important place for them, so the fact they had similar plans, that were then interrupted, reflects Season One while also telling us that things are clearly not going to be good.
Tumblr media
But then you also consider that it's perhaps exactly what the Metatron wanted all along, for Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship of love and trust to completely fall away, symbolised by the hopes of dining at the Ritz disappearing.
Therefore I think a pretty reasonable conclusion from the mention of Death - and the parallels with last season - from someone as sinister as the Metatron is that something is going to happen to most likely both of them. Metatron is also almost surprised that people never ask for death, as it is "so predictable." There was definite intention in that scene, and makes me wonder if he thinks whatever he's trying to make happen will make them wish for death?
This next point is a big one. At first you might think its coincidental but if you go back and watch the scene I think you'll be convinced. When the Metatron enters the bookshop, the lamps with the candle looking bulbs and the glass decorations jingle and move. I can't find a good GIF to show it but if you rewatch I promise you'll notice it. And yes, since the door has just closed and there's potential wind they might move for a few seconds, but they continue moving the entire time Metatron is in the bookshop. This scene goes on for approximately 2.5 - 3 minutes, definitely too long for them to be moving. But, I suppose you never know, could be coincidental. Until he leaves the shop with Aziraphale. They move more vigorously on his way out, but by the time (about three seconds) Crowley walks towards the window to watch them go, they've completely stopped moving. Not a coincidence. Metatron has some sort of energy that's powerful, or influential enough, that it cause material objects to move vigorously when he's near them. They didn't even move nearly as much when literal demons entered the shop, at the beginning of episode six.
Tumblr media
Considering the fact that those lamps were completely conjured by Aziraphale for his ball, I have a strong suspicion he's particularly influential over magical objects... or magical things (entities) in general. (This is important later)
Metatron also says, "just you and me, Aziraphale, eh?" which is honestly something that sounds more like enemies facing off in a battle, than friends going out for a chat. It's like when a murderer is alone with their victim, and while Az and Metatron are talking there are no witnesses. I definitely think this is foreshadowing for next season when Aziraphale has to face off with the Metatron.
When they're leaving the shop the Metatron is all lovely smiles while Aziraphale is looking, and he seems a bit like a harmless old man, but as soon as Azi's back is turned he gives Crowley the most hateful, sinister, conniving glare, with [tense music playing] according to the subtitles and also my ears. He is up to something. This is a very strong piece of evidence that the Metatron Does Not Like Crowley.
Tumblr media
He tells Aziraphale, "you are just the angel for the job." It could be an ordinary thing to say, but no I don't think so. I think the Metatron has been carefully considering this for quite some time, and I think this is all about Crowley. He says there are "huge plans afoot, enormous projects," and he's so careful to be extremely vague, while talking Aziraphale up. Then he uses a tactic knows will work, which is playing with Aziraphale's heart and using Crowley.
"I've been looking back over a number of your previous exploits, and I see that in quite a few of them you formed a de facto partnership with the demon Crowley."
He has done meticulous research, and it's made clear earlier that he hates Crowley. But, he knows that Aziraphale loves Crowley, and that he wouldnt be able to resist the chance to try and do what he thinks is the right thing. Metatron mentioned that he was a 'Prince of Heaven' and that it could be seen as an 'institutional problem'. Well Heaven can't really been seen to have problems can it? And Crowley has been doing whatever he pleases for six thousand years, not on the side of Heaven or Hell, and I think that they're sick of it. He's already 'corrupted' one angel, who knows what's next? They don't want someone to hold that kind of knowledge and power over them, and Crowley holds a far greater knowledge of earth than any of the rest of them do.
And so the Metatron offers Aziraphale something he knows he won't refuse:
Tumblr media
And I have to ask, why, why would he ever have Crowley reinstated to "full angelic status?" Two seconds ago he just described him as a demon?? The answer is that he wouldn't. Somehow I don't think heaven makes a habit of restoring fallen angels. He has a master plan, and that involves getting to Crowley, which means getting Aziraphale out of the way. Eventually I think they'll attempt to use them against each other, but the first thing for them to do was gain some control over Crowley. The Metatron had offered for Crowley to come to Heaven, which does of course provide easy access to him and if Crowley had chosen to do that it probably would've worked for them. But I think the Metatron was counting on Crowley not wanting to go back, and that Aziraphale suggesting it would even drive a wedge through their relationship (which it did).
And now Aziraphale is off somewhere busy working, they aren't speaking to each other and Crowley is alone on earth, no one is going to notice if something happens to him or he goes missing.
Aziraphale also really isn't that special to Heaven, he's just another angel, and one who doesn't always do as he's told, which begs the question of why Metatron would make a whole trip to earth, just to give him Gabriel's job. It could go to pretty much anyone honestly. So when Metatron says 'The Job,' I'm certain he does not mean taking over Gabriel's position. He means the job of getting demon Crowley back in order and control, so he stops causing problems for Heaven. Because wherever there's a problem, Crowley is at the centre of it.
Finally. Aziraphale's insane smile in the elevator.
Tumblr media
DO YOU SEE HOW CREEPY THAT IS?? It's so off putting, and given he's just effectively broken up with Crowley you wouldn't expect him to be too cheerful. That is the least genuine smile I have ever seen, like it does not even look like Aziraphale anymore. At first I thought it was just him trying to make himself feel okay about everything, and it technically could be, but I'm not convinced of that. There's obviously the theory that Metatron put something in Aziraphale's coffee, but I just don't buy that (no hate to the theory ofc, definitely still a possibility). It's so simple, so human, and this brings me to my point about Metatron having influence over objects, particularly magical ones, and potentially entities as well. I think it is far more likely that Metatron is either brainwashing Aziraphale or simply has an element of control over him, but isn't entirely controlling him. Could be persuasive power, which he uses to influence Aziraphale, but technically if Az fought really hard he could fight him off. My mind influence theory is supported on multiple occassions, where Aziraphale seems to want to change his mind, or act a certain way, and then suddenly snaps back to acting like everything is okay. Examples of that are:
- Aziraphale straight up says he doesnt want to go to Heaven. He tries to play it off as a bit of a joke but he looked pretty damn serious when he says it. He looks so doubtful, but between then and speaking to Crowley, his attitude does a complete 180 flip
- "Well obviously you said no to Hell, you're the bad guys." Aziraphale would NEVER say that if his mind was completely his own. He has spent almost their entire existence saying that Crowley is nice and good and kind. He doesn't think for a moment that Crowley is grouped in with Hell anymore, but that's certainly what the Metatron would think
- Metatron walks in right after Crowley leaves and isn't at all surprised by the fact that Crowley refused, more evidence that it was what he'd hoped and planned for. "Ah well always did want to go his own way. Always asking damn fool questions too." Which is a tiny bit of further background into fallen angel Crowley.
- When Aziraphale is heavily considering changing his mind, Metatron keeps talking as though Aziraphale is saying different words. "It should be in safe hands." "Anything you need to take with you?" He's suddenly really pushing Aziraphale, even though he said there was no need to answer right away.
And that is all I have for you!! If anyone has anything to add I would LOVE to hear, this is my theory, definitely not the only possibility but I do think it's a candidate. Please let me know if there's any major points I've missed, I'm sure there probably is 🤍
@a-hearts-a-heavy-burden let me know what you think!!

How many works do you have in AO3? 55! A few of which are art or meta, but the majority are fics.
What’s your total AO3 word count? 329,403 words.
What fandoms do you write for? Almost exclusively Good Omens.
Top five fics by Kudos:
1. I Could Be Yours (E) - 614 Kudos
The version of Good Omens where Aziraphale and Crowley are a pair of horny immortals who enjoy engaging in very long, very elaborate, VERY INTENSE role plays.
This fic is currently part of a hostage situation and will not be updated unless/until that is resolved. I do have a handful of chapters written and ready to go though.
2. I’ll Cum Quietly (E) - 613 Kudos (for a one chapter fic? We were all a little horny after that ending, I suppose. 😆)
Aziraphale has a REACTION to Crowley saying that line. Spoiler alert: Crowley does not come quietly. XD
3. The Nightingales Were Just Sleeping In (T) - 518 Kudos
The one where Crowley falls to the bookshop floor, a sobbing mess, and these two idiots finally figure out they’re just on opposite sides of the same page.
4. Oh, Simple Thing, Where Have You Gone (M/E I keep changing my mind) - 490 Kudos
Let’s make it worse! And then eventually fix it, I promise.
Immediately post season 2, we’re going to find out just how sinister the Metatron’s plan is.
Still a WIP. I’m coming back to this one as soon as I catch up on my event things.
5. Show Me You Love Me? (E) - 406 Kudos
After dealing with a few unruly demons, Aziraphale has been crowned the local demon expert. This mostly means informing the local priests that they have in fact trapped yet another normal human and setting the poor fellows loose. That is until today.
Alternatively: Crowley gets caught by some enthusiastic humans and was likely well on his way to discorporation before Aziraphale steps in. Aziraphale tenderly cares for Crowley, and then there are love confessions, and then Aziraphale takes care of Crowley in a different way.
Do you respond to comments? When I have the spoons I respond to every comment, even the basic “I loved this” ones. But spoons have been in short supply lately so I’ve only been responding to comments that I have meaningful responses to.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Oh my. Isn’t that a question. And surprisingly, it does have a definitive answer. This was only the fifth fic I ever published. It’s the first dark fic I ever wrote. It altered the way I think about using horror elements in storytelling. It has very few hits and kudos. It remains to this day one of my favourite works, despite the fact that I’ve grown so much in my prose and story structuring since then.
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (E) Mind the tags. I did not do in depth CWs the way I do them now. All of the warnings are in the tags only.
A Christmas horror story in which Crowley accidentally releases the demon of Yule, Krampus. Intense horror elements throughout, especially at the end. There is no bright side at the end of this. There is no safety. There is no peace.
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? This one is actually harder. I know I’m more known for dark fic, but I’ve written more than one piece where they’re just completely happy at the end. Nothing could be better. Because of that, I’m going to go with the one with the happy ending that means the most to me. That would be this one:
There were Angels Dining at the Ritz (G)
Seasons 1, 2, and 3 (I hope) from the perspective of a waitress at the Ritz.
Do you get hate on fics? Not really. I’ve gotten two hate comments over 30+ dark and/or intense kink fics. One of those accounts is perma-banned, the other got off with a warning. Try it, I dare you.
Do you write smut? Yes indeed. The kinkier the better. You didn’t ask, but this is my favourite soft smut:
Just Another Day in the Rest of Their Lives (E)
It's a soft sort of spice, being woken by your lover's kisses in the cottage you share in the South Downs. How long can they linger here, letting eternity pass them by?
And this is my favourite kink:
Submission (E)
Crowley is in one of his "bratty bottom" moods and needs some help calming down.
And finally, my favourite dark smut fics:
Belle Mort (E) - lovingly nicknamed “Necro”
Heaven is on to the Arrangement. Fortunately, Aziraphale has a plan to throw them off the scent. Surely hereditary enemies couldn't be fraternizing if one of them discorporates the other? Crowley would never agree to such a plan, of course, but they can talk about it after.
No Escape For the Wicked (E) - lovingly nicknamed “eggs”
Crowley has been Lucifer's brood bitch from the dawn of the Earth, a duty he can't escape after his treachery. When he is forced to return to the depths of Hell for his task following his betrayal, he finds a vengefully jealous master.
Craziest Crossover? I don’t know about craziest, but this Good Omens X The Sandman is quite a bit of kinky fun.
Desire (E)
Crowley has spent the last several thousand years keeping Desire at bay. He's had to. But after a certain night in 1941, when Crowley's defenses are shot and Desire comes in the shape of his angel, the demon at last gives in to a temptation of his own making.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I’m aware of. I do occasionally scour for stolen works through general Google search, but that isn’t a guarantee.
Have you ever had a fic translated? The first chapter of I Could Be Yours has a Russian translation. I’m unsure if the translator intends to do more. The lovely @nosferatini has also made a podfic of Platypi and Other Insignificant Topics of Discussion.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Not that has been published yet. I have written fics based on other works and have had a few write fics based on mine. There’s a lovely comic up on Gleafer’s Patreon based on one of my own Patreon Exclusive fics. The Great Flood (available now to free and paid members on my Patreon).
All time favourite ship? Aziraphale/Crowley. Honorable mention to the crack ship I’ll go down with: The Bookshop/The Bentley.
What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Still unnamed. Serial art thief Anthony Crowley/FBI agent Ezra Fell. Slow burn. And I mean slooooow burn. Currently sitting at 150k words. It will be well over 400k when completed, I think.
What are your writing strengths? Intense emotion. Intense psychological elements. Putting just the right amount of feeling into a whump fic that the pain hits that much harder.
What are your writing weaknesses? I’m still a fairly young writer. I’ve only been publishing fic for four years. I’ve only really been writing for about fifteen. Because of that, I’m still evolving very rapidly. I see it the most in my prose. I’m still learning how grammar works among other things.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language? It’s fine. It can help with the story immersion. I don’t speak any other language well enough to use more than the occasional short phrase. I do have an upcoming Rennaisance Era Pirate/Witch Crowley who says quite a few Irish Gaelic expletives.
First fandom you wrote in? Warrior cats. Never published but I do still have it somewhere around here. Written in pencil so it’s fading fast. 😆
Favourite fic you’ve ever written? YOU WOULD HAVE ME CHOOSE BETWEEN MY CHILDREN?!
Okay, I really did try. I scrolled through several times but I can’t choose. So instead, have the crack fic that I nearly got a heart attack over when someone sent an ask about it to Neil Gaiman’s inbox. 😳
Hey Sexy, Wanna Oil My Exhaust Pipe? (E)
The Bentley doesn't appreciate being left out in the cold while her demon gets it on with his angel. Fortunately, the bookshop is all too willing to engage in some fun times of their own.

The fairy smirked, finally being the one to do the wishing for once.
"I wish you would sing a song that is as close to expressing your happiness as possible."
m!a: wishes 3/3
Crowley grimaced. He wasn't sure which part of this was more humiliating; the fact that he had to sing for the faery, or the way he was being asked to show even a smidgen of his honest self. Either way, he didn't really have time to think about it. Whatever magic it was that put this wish granting spell on him was already starting to work.
He didn't have to think, the spell was doing the work for him whether he wanted it to or not. Unfortunate for him, because if he were able to choose a song, he could lie about what made him happiest.
The magic pried open his gritted teeth, and even before he began, he knew what song would come out. The song that never failed to make him think of what may well have been the happiest moment of his long, long life. The song the pianist was playing when he and the angel, truly free for the very first time, had toasted to celebrate the survival of themselves, each other, and the world that they'd called home for six thousand years.
"That certain night, The night we met, There was magic abroad in the air. There were angels dining at the Ritz, And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square..."

a head canon for season 3:
God herself never talks to anyone anymore about Anything because she's either a bitter petty bitch like that or she's just sitting back enjoying the show, (or maybe a bit of both).
but she feels bad for Crowley and Aziraphale and has always meant for Crowley to be a demon, thats who he was always meant to be, and always made them to be a pair but she can't tell them that because it would ruin every lesson she's trying to teach them about identity and growth and friendship and true love and what it really means to be a soul mate because they were her first try at soul mates, they're the blueprints of the whole damn operation.
And being soulmates isn't about being exactly alike, it isn't even about being exactly in tune with each other all the time, its about when you're together you're stronger and braver, you help each other grow and heal and love yourself.
That's why she talks about the Nightingale singing over Berkley square, because she knows its their song, she knows that's it their thing to dine at the Ritz, and she didn't design that for them they came up with that on their own, every twist and turn their relationship has gone down has been free will but now its got all mucked up and she's like I gotta go talk to them.
So she comes down from on high and every angel and demon in the immediate area is stressing out and trying to get her attention but she's just sitting down with Aziraphale and trying to talk about feelings over cocoa and then the Metatron turns to Jesus and is just like 'Can you please go talk to your Mom we need to get back on track' and Jesus is like 'You think I can tell my Mom to do anything?"
And Crowley won't say a word to her no matter what she does.
I just think it would be really funny having all these angels jumping over themselves trying to talk to God about The Next Plan and Important Apocalypse things and she is just like 'Yeaaaah, I really just came down to talk to Zira can you give us some privacy please :)'
And Aziraphale is just like :0

something something maybe the "no nightingales" line is some reverse dramatic irony. Maybe they know something about nightingales/the song/both that we don't, and that something has something to do with why Aziraphale looks like he realises it's all over when Crowley points it out. (And why Crowley says "we could have been us" like there's no other way out now, like it is all over)
Maybe that song/bridsong signifies them being together???? Maybe something else I'm missing???
But you sure can hear some birdsong just barely over the noise of the traffic in the scene where Aziraphale calls the Bentley their car. (It's the only scene where I can hear some, parallels S1)
And the Bentley sure does play the 2nd verse of the cover. S1 started it off, and it played throughout the credits. S2 plays the second verse. S3???????
Well there are 3 verses in the cover after all.
That certain night The night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
I may be right I may be wrong But I'm perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square <--- We are here, maybe, idk maybe, I'm not saying anything, but something something it's interesting
The streets of town Were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
I know 'cause I was there That night in Berkeley Square

hi I love all the work you do here for this fandom, anyways I think someone might’ve already asked this but I couldn’t find it. So here goes are there any fanfics you have that are told from the kitchen staff at the ritz point of view on Crowley and Aziraphale preferably post season 2, thank you so much!
This has been asked before. The post is here and can be found on our #outsider pov tag. I have some more, but not many post-series two as there just aren't many of them!...
There Were Angels Dining at the Ritz by theRavenMuse (G)
Seasons 1, 2, and 3 (I hope) from the perspective of a waitress at the Ritz.
Betting High by Lorelle (G)
After the Almost-Apocalypse, Crowley and Aziraphale dine at the Ritz. Little do they know that there's more riding on their dinner than a nice evening out.
Dear Angel of the Ritz by SazzyLJ (G)
The angel and his dear are legendary patrons of the Ritz. To the staff, their story is a treasured puzzle with a lot of of missing pieces.
The Cupbearer, or, The Exile's Tale by CopperBeech (T)
There’s an uncanny pair who seem always to turn up at the Ritz just as a table becomes available. There’s a maitre d’ who finds it curious. And he has his own story to tell.
The Continued Adventures of Everyone Else In London by WitherWanderYou (G)
A collection of short stories that follows the everyday life of ordinary Londoners following the odd occurrences of the Armageddon That Wasn't, and the various Occult and Celestial beings they encounter— however unwittingly— along the way.
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square by ThetaSigma (T)
Sam had settled into his job at the Ritz nicely. For example, no one there cared that his birth certificate listed him as Samantha and female and accepted him as Sam and male easily. It's a job he really loves, not least because his supervisor is possibly the nicest person to roam the Earth. Sam also may be the first waiter in all of history to find out why the wine bottles fill up again when Aziraphale and Crowley have dined there. *** He discreetly cleared away the empty bottles on the table and went to put them in the recycling, same as he always did. Jim stopped him. “Not those bottles, son.” “But they’re just empty bottles, Jim. Nothing left.” “I know. But trust me. Cork them and put them back on the shelf, especially if those two ordered more than four bottles total.”

Good Omen 2 Spoilers
-
-
-
-
Needless to say I’m devastated, obviously. The season was amazing, the writing, the acting, everything, and I was SO sure it was going to end with a drunken breakfast at the Ritz like Crowley. I was SO SURE they were going to kiss and happy music would swell and it was going to be all fine and dandy.
And of course I’m heartbroken for how It turned out, of COURSE I’m devastated that Aziraphale fundamentally missed the point that Crowley doesn’t want to be an Angel again, he doesn’t want to be a demon, he wants to be AZIRAPHALE’S.
Of course I’m so fucking sad that Crowley finally was vulnerable, and it came at just the wrong moment, the wrong time, the wrong wording to convince Aziraphale heaven can’t be fixed, because the thing is, Aziraphale is still brainwashed by the idea of Good. He is SO used to heaven being unkind that the second they throw him a bone he jumps, thinks “this is a chance for things to be different!” And is completely blinded by his own need to feel like a part of something bigger that he can’t see the truth, that they are manipulative and always will be, that if he didn’t have respect before he certainly won’t now, and most importantly That CROWLEY has never treated him like that, not once.
On the other hand, for all the people who are devastated and saying that they won’t rewatch, that they’re burning the bridge of their interest in good omens, that this is queerbait, it’s NOT. That’s your prerogative to stop watching of course, but the point is this is an UNFINISHED TALE. 6 episodes couldn’t cover the story, the overarching story, and this season didn’t have what would have been essential to Crowley and Aziraphale truly ending up together.
Crowley said it himself, Aziraphale WASNT THERE when they told him to shut up and die. He doesn’t believe heaven is as bad as it is because he hasn’t witnessed the true coldness up there in so long, and he’s NORMALIZED to the neglect and abuse he faces up there in a way many abused people are. He thinks that one bone is enough, that he can fix them, and he always would have felt that, which is why He NEEDS a personal arc where he realizes this on his own and stands up for himself AGAINST HEAVEN. THIS is his opportunity to do that. THAT is why the writers made him go back, he needs to know for himself before he can accept it.
THATS why Neil Gaiman is saying on his blog that he needs a season 3 to complete the arc. The writing timing of this falling out is intentional to keep the show alive to get to that point. If this tragic moment was left for Season 3 Ep 1 and they dined at the ritz like normal for Season 2 finale, there wouldn’t be any development we need for Aziraphale, and more importantly, if would feel like there was no need for a season 3. This tension is the writing worlds way of PRESERVING this show, and it’s frustrating yes, but that’s how things get renewed, that’s how Aziraphale gets the arc he needs, that’s how we get happy endgame Aziracrow, that’s how you rev up anticipation for the Second Coming, THATS how you write a story.
Also, it’s not queerbait. It never has been. They’ve always been in love, not even TALKING about the kiss here but about their complete trust in each other, their inside jokes, the DANCE SCENE, Crowley comforting Aziraphale after he lied to heaven. The symbolism between them and Maggie and Nina. (Nina also being in an abusive relationship like Aziraphale with heaven and needing TIME TO PROCESS before getting with Maggie, who will wait for her is totally mirroring the arc Aziraphale needs to have btw. Abused people don’t often just fall into healthy new relationships while still being entangled in their old ones mentally). My point is that if your argument for hating the ending is this was pulling the rug out from under queer fan base, think about all the creators who shoe in a gay relationship, kiss at the last second on the shows last episode, think about all the shows where subtext had to be enough, or where showrunners weren’t brave or allowed enough to make a relationship canon until the last second. This is the MIDDLE of the show (if everything goes well with Amazon which is out of Neil’s control). This has been explicit from the creators mouth and frankly the show itself for ages, even without a kiss. This is not queerbait, and sometimes relationships need space to be able to come back together in a truly fulfilled way, even queer ones.
Anyway that’s my rant, I have more, per usual, but this post is already long

Playlist Analysis: #4 - A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
Return to Main Post
#4. A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square – Vera Lynn
Both.
Overview:
Tumblr media
An obvious choice for this playlist. This is my 1941 song. I chose the Vera Lynn version because I just love her style (and I think it has to be the one they heard first), but the Tori Amos version is great as well. If you like it better or prefer it because it’s the one used in the show, please feel free to swap it out if you’re listening to the playlist.
This is their song. First published in 1940, it’s a beautiful song about meeting someone, falling head over heels, spending the night together, and dancing home the next morning. I think that up until Crowley said those immortal words, the audience thought that it was their song on a meta level. The book and season 1 both mention it from a third person point of view with no acknowledgement or reference from the characters. But now we know that it was something the two of them found important together. Did something else happen in 1941? (Chomping at the bit for 1941 part 3!) We know something changed their dynamic between 1941 and 1967. We know Aziraphale did the apology dance in 1941. Maybe this is why Aziraphale specifically suggested they dine at the Ritz someday after giving Crowley the holy water. Why would Crowley have said “No nightingales” if it wasn’t something significant between them? Aziraphale’s wounded reaction to those words confirms its significance. The fact is, Crowley weaponized this song in a riposte to Aziraphale’s reactionary petulance.
Lastly, why was it playing in the Bentley after Aziraphale left? We know the Bentley has been fundamentally changed. It’s no longer Crowley’s car, it’s “Our Car.” I think I remember seeing a quote from Neil along the lines of, “The Bentley would have followed Aziraphale anywhere.” Who was it channeling to play that song? I’ve seen people speculate that Crowley queued it up for their drive to the Ritz, but I don’t buy that. Maybe it was a way of Aziraphale communicating that his heart still sings despite the regrettable things they both said and did. Or maybe it was Crowley’s heart betraying itself – an admission that there is a guarantee that he’ll still be waiting when Aziraphale is ready. Or maybe it’s just the writer wanting to hurt us even more.
Lyrics:
That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
This wasn’t the night they first literally met, but maybe it was the first time they met in a figurative sense: being in the same place emotionally at the same time.
Neil has said that they dine at the Ritz because it was in reference to this song. In the book and season 1, maybe that’s all there was to it. One last clue for anyone who missed all the other indications that their relationship isn’t just platonic. But in season 2, we get the magic show. There was no literal magic in the air because Furfur blocked it, instead all the magic present was of the human variety. Romantic AF.
I may be right, I may be wrong But I’m perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
This sets me up to assume that nothing was spoken in 1941. Nobody confirmed any feelings out loud, due either to the threat they had just confirmed they were under or the habit they were already in, but they both understood how the other felt. "That's what... friends... do." That feeling where you just know the other person feels the same, but can't bring yourself to say it. The willingness to swear an oath that whatever was unspoken by the parties involved was mutual. Maybe sung about by a third party somewhere (The writer? The audience? God?).
The moon that lingered over London Town Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown How could he know we two were so in love The whole darn world seemed upside down
[Please note that this verse is not present in the Tori Amos version]
Up to this point in the lyrics, the interactions between the characters in the song are meeting and looking. No contact, not even words as far as we know. These two have been trying to keep their fraternization a secret for millennia, after all. Anyone watching couldn’t hear the song being shared by the two hearts, but the two hearts sing anyway. A silent, beautiful, and disorienting duet.
The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
The elation of intense romantic feelings has been described poetically since romance was invented (invented by these two, IMO). The description of streets being paved with stars evokes images of fantasy, dreams, vastness, wonder, possibility. It’s romance in a nutshell. Not to mention evoking the Starmaker, himself. I don’t assume that they kissed in 1941, but at the end of the 1941 segment we get in season 2, everything is so gentle and romantic it doesn’t even need a kiss. A figurative act of intimacy, the bullet catch, was observed by someone who could destroy their "de-facto partnership," thus ending their night of magic.
As dawn came stealing up all gold and blue To interrupt our rendezvous I still remember how you smiled and said “Was that a dream or was it true?”
[Please note that this verse is not present in the Tori Amos version]
What fan doesn’t want to live in the 1941 sequence? The assumption that they hadn’t seen each other since 1862, Crowley showing up out of nowhere and at great personal discomfort to save Aziraphale, a little demonic miracle of his own, the way Aziraphale gazes at him the entire sequence, and Crowley’s unconditional support through the entire thing, despite his obvious concerns. What happened that we didn’t see? Just how long did they spend together? What might have happened if Furfur didn’t show up? And what happened afterward? Their rendezvous was interrupted. They had let their guard down and were reminded of the very real danger they face by getting too close.
Our homeward step was just as light As the tapdancing feet of Astaire And like an echo far away A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
[Please note that this verse is not present in the Tori Amos version]
This verse, in this context, has two meanings for me. The intended meaning of the lyrics, implying that the parties involved are still high on the emotions of the evening and are lightly and merrily dancing home as Fred Astaire might. But also a much more tragic meaning. Another time one might be described as having light footsteps is when sneaking around. After being caught, despite knowing the proof had been pilfered, they may have redoubled their efforts to appear as enemies. They realize they still have to sneak around to have any time together. That beautiful nightingale’s song is sadly now only an echo in the distance.

So, the last 10 minutes of season 2 really fuck me up. So bad, in fact, that I even created a playlist based on that scene alone. In my delusional mind, these songs represent Crowley's feelings after that fiasco with a sprinkle of Aziraphale's P.O.V. Basically, it's fanfiction but with music. I even went as far as categorizing the songs after the 5 stages of grief.
Tumblr media
And the text below? Just think of it as context for the songs and the story I'm trying to tell.
Now, without futher ado, just sit back, relax and enjoy as I present to you
"Ineffable Suffering"
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We start out with 3 songs from "Anger", Crowley was furious, fuming. He had tried everything to win his angel over and still failed, miserably. After all of the shenanigans they've been through, Azira still chose heaven over him. Why? They could've had their happy ending! How could Aziraphale be so easily blinded by heaven? Did they brainwash him or has the demon read the room wrong the entire time. That, in reality, he never had any real interest in Crowley and all the things they shared were just lies, a pity act put up by the goody two shoes angel. Well, no matter what the actual reason was, one thing for sure is that Crowley is driving far away from London because everything reminds him of Aziraphale. Everything hurts like it's death by a thousand cuts and it was the angel's fault, he decides. But then, he actually takes the time to rethink the situation and nothing makes sense.
Moving on to "Denial", Crowley couldn't make heads or tails of this, what was the reason that they can't fall in love and be together? Crowley had been with Aziraphale through the ups and downs, saving him from sticky situations, laughing, and dining with him at the Ritz.
He then reminisces back to the early years of their relationship, even when they first met when he was an angel, there was an instant connection. And after he had turned into a demon, nothing really changed between them, surprisingly. As time went on, they grew closer and closer and before he knew it, he was falling fast, even if he didn't want to admit it. So when Crowley grabbed and kissed Aziraphale, he was unleashing everything he felt about the angel over the past 6000 years. He was desperately pleading with Aziraphale to stay with him and think about what could be if they were together. Turns out, it was their first and also probably their last kiss as well.
Next up is "Bargaining". Maybe it was his reluctance to admit his feelings, maybe he didn't make his intention clear enough, or maybe he should've shown more signs. Either way, if he gets the chance to redo everything, Crowley would take it. He would love Aziraphale more, and care for him more. He would make Aziraphale stay and his angel wouldn't be the one that got away.
But nothing can turn back time, and he gotta accept that perhaps, they were wrong for each other. He and Azira were not meant to be because angels as sweet, kind, clumsy, and lovable as him couldn't possibly love a demon like Crowley, and the sooner he lets go of him, the better. However, he couldn't seems to get the angel out of his head.
"Depression" sees Crowley struggling to move on. The thought of the angel haunts his mind daily. Why can't he scratch Aziraphale out, he already made it clear that "fixing" heaven was much more important than being on their own side, so why can't he let him go? WHAT is it about him that makes it so GODDAMN hard for Crowley to forget? It is the angel's eyes and smiles, his bubbly and also sassy attitude, his love for food, his Gavotte dance, his terrible magic shows, his obsession with collecting books. But most important of all, it is the affection the angel had shown him. He blames Aziraphale for caring about him, going on lunch dates with him, and sticking by his side just to throw it all away when heaven came knocking on his door. No, if Crowley has the chance to go back, he would stay away from Aziraphale, he would make sure that their paths would never cross, anything to make the current torment disappear. Aziraphale has tricked him into believing he at least had a friend, someone who he could trust and now he is suffering from the wound inside his heart. Oh how he HATES Aziraphale for that, for making him regret his entire life choices, for causing him so much pain, he just CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
And then somewhere up above, Aziraphale is watching with sadness blooming all over his face. He is no good angel, he had left Crowley all alone down on Earth. The truth is that he does love the demon, so much. He had wanted to return the kiss, to hold him closer and never let him go. But he has a duty, and it's to regenerate heaven and make sure the place lives up to its name. Oh if only Crowley had accepted his offer to come back as an angel, then they could be together while working to fix heaven. But at last, both of them had made their choices and now, Aziraphale could only send out his apology, telling Crowley how sorry he is for hurting him, for not returning his love, and for basically walking out on him. He hopes that one day, he will be able to find someone better, someone who deserves to be called his angel.
Throughout his rage, Crowley hears Aziraphale. His eyes start to water as he accepts that he could really never hate Aziraphale even if he tries to, he just loves him too much. All the memories of him and his angel, he would cherish and keep locked inside his heart forever. And though it might still ache deeply now, Crowley knows that someday, he would be able to put Aziraphale in the past but could never truly forget about him.
**********
The last 2 songs on this playlist all fall into the "Acceptance" stage and take place in the future (or what I would like to call my headcanon for season 3).
**********
In "I Almost Do", Crowley has finally been able to move on from Aziraphale but not without any trouble. He missed his angel like crazy and has tried from time to time again to reach out to him. But he knew heaven was corrupted and it would have gone against everything he stands for if he did decide to give in. So, while he may have successfully withstood the temptation, he couldn't recall how many times he almost gave up and contacted Azira.
Finally, my playlist ends with "Back to December" and it's in Aziraphale's P.O.V. As a twist of fate, heaven had tricked Aziraphale. They were just using him and his knowledge on mankind in an attempt to restart armageddon. This leads to Crowley and Aziraphale having to work together again to save the day. And in the end, before Crowley gets the chance to slip away unnoticed, Aziraphale catches up to him and apologizes for real this time. Tears are rolling down his eyes as he tries to make amends with Crowley. He was an idiot for ignoring Crowley's warnings and outcry. He was stupid for believing in heaven's words, and he shouldn't have betrayed the demon's love for him. He knows he probably fucks up any chance he has left with Crowley but still, he would love to go off and spend eternity with him, to be the angel that he has always loved again, if he let him.
The end... Or so you think.
**********
Because I like to torture myself with angst, "I Almost Do" and "Back To December" can easily switch places. And if that is the case, then it means that...
**********
Crowley has denied Aziraphale's wish and they go their separate ways. In the end, both have got their own places and their own lives. But memories of each other still spring up in their minds every once in a while as they contemplate whether or not they should pick up the phone and give this star-crossed love another try.
End of story, officially.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, I tried my hardest to explain my song choices and the meaning behind each one of them but my crappy writing has its limit. So maybe check out this playlist if you have a minute and actually experience good writing from talented artists to help guide you through this story. Then maybe, let me know which ending you choose, which song would you've switched the stages to, and what you think about it.
P.S. If anyone is wondering why a few stages of grief get repeated throughout the story then the answer to that is celestial beings are weird and that's how it works.

Okay here’s how I see it:
Angels (before everything): they are close. Besties even. Nothing very romantic but they can feel stirrings of something and both haven’t yet said anything but yes they both like and acknowledge it.
Eden (post Crowley/Crawley fall): Crawley starts catching proper feelings the second azi says ‘I gave it away!’ And Azi is attracted but not allowing himself to feel it bc of the whole angel/demon thing and they’re still messed up from the battle and witnessing the falls
The whole Job mess: Azi starts to let himself feel for Crawley, but still feels uncomfortable. It definitely lessens after the our side scene but the fear/discomfort/anxiety is still very present. Imo, they’re ‘dating’ at this point. Crawley’s feelings are still fairly the same, but more intense (again after the our side scene).
Edinburgh: they’ve both fallen hard for each other. It hits them at different times obviously, Crowley when azi grabs her waist in that very intimate way (eeeeeeeekkkk) and Aziraphale when Crowley helps Elspeth and drinks the laudanum. But basically, they’re both deeply in love with each other and are vaguely aware of that. Imo that’s why azi’s reaction with the holy water is so intense, because they’ve finally realised ‘oh wait, I love them and I don’t want him to die. I do need her’
1941: I hear wedding bells! I mean, they were in a church haha. Anyway, this is when they *emotionally* become more. More than just partners in an agreement, more than just circling each other and occasionally having food or rescuing one another. They become emotionally married. This is when they really accept each other and truly become the Inneffable Husbands (Wives/Spouses/etc). I would say honeymoon period starts now, but Crowley is still going on the whole holy water thing so imo they don’t exactly have a proper super super close honeymoon period.
the Antichrist mess: their relationship is nice and calm, they’ve settled now, settled into their married ways. Dining at the ritz, Crowley driving them around, and they both start to get plenty of use out of the bookshop
present day/s2: still lovely and married! We’ve all seen it, it’s very domestic and quieter. Honourable mentions to ‘do WE know a Jim?’ ‘Our car!’ ‘While we dance <3’ and the whole collection of loving looks through the whole season.
post s2 (my hcs, subject to change lol): the divorce. Crowley is as usual drinking his pain away, and he is just so in pain. They both are, but they show it very very differently. Crowley is so so so in love but she’s had their heart broken too badly and can’t get over him (obviously). Azi is masking A LOT and can barely feel properly. They complete their duties in silence and don’t talk often. The only emotion he feels truly is heartbreak and longing but they think they’ve messed it up too badly and Crowley hates them now. She doesn’t of course, but that irrational fear is there especially as he can hear every time Crowley curses him using his name. (eg: fuck you aziaphale, you piece of shit I hate you). It’s honestly not going to take a lot for them to be together again (I’m not saying forgive we have bad experiences with that word). Crowley will shout a little, then azi will surge her and cry and/or kiss them then they’ll cry together and make up.
For some reason I found the “Do we know a Jim?” From Crowley to be so domestic like they’re so in tune with eachother he just assumes anyone aziraphale met they met together bc they’re husbands
