Day 14 Bleeding through bandages, Field Medicine, No anesthesia
TW/CW: Blood, cold family, hiding injury, slash on arm from sword, forced to mask Word count: 946
“Argh! Shit!”, Harmonia yelled. Beads of blood started to quell out of a long slash on her arm.
The magic possessing the sword that cut her went out and sent the weapon clattering to the ground.
Harmonia clutched her hand over the cut, but blood was already squeezing out between her fingers. She tried her healing magic, but the bleeding didn’t stop. “Shit, shit, shit. Did you go for a cursed strike?!”, she asked the magic. Of course she didn’t get an answer. She had already pulled it back. “Just peachy!”, she spit out.
“Harmonia? Are you on there?”, a female voice called from outside.
Harmonia’s head jerked up at the voice. “Oh, come on, how much misfortune can one celestial have in day?”, she groaned quietly. Pressing her teeth together in pain.
“Let me rephrase maybe. I know that you’re in there. I want to see you in the foyer presentable in no less than five minutes.”
“I will be there mother.”
“Good.”, the female voice replied coldly.
Harmonia pushed herself to walk over to the wall where there was a little box on the cupboard. She opened the door and rummaged through the bottles and patches until she found what she wanted. Blood absorbing bandages. As quickly and as professionally as she could she wrapped her bleeding arm and cleaned the blood of the floor with a simple wave of her hand. Then she flew to her room. Fortunately her maids had already laid out clothes for her and now helped her get changed in lightspeed.
After six minutes and 17 seconds she was standing presentably dressed in the foyer next to the other oldest sisters and brothers. Their parents had important guests over so naturally they had to pull up the entire stupid theatre. Right now, she was smiling and greeting the guests. It cost her the upmost of self-discipline to smile and act through the pain in her arm. They moved to the fancier dining room, which Harmonia did not fail to notice, had been freshly cleaned and decorated. After a bit more of friendly chattery the maids got everyone seated and the first round of food was served swiftly. Apparently they wanted to keep them mouth-dead Harmonia figured.
---
Most of the meal didn't stick with Harmonia, she was too focused on looking like she was enjoying herself, with looking noble and like she wasn't in pain. It was also getting gradually more difficult to even hear the conversation. Well, to understand the words. To be fair her parents and the oldest sister made sure to bind her into the talking as little as possible. Harmonia couldn’t judge them for it. Her skills in that department still needed a lot of honing as is and now while she was feeling so bad she had no doubt it would be much worse.
The sister sitting next to Harmonia discretely touched her arm and searched her gaze. When her little sister was finally looking at her she saw barely hidden pain in them and she quickly let go of her arm. The pain faded a little bit.
Harmonia knew her sister was trying to warn her. To keep up appearances but it was so hard. When she had touched her arm Harmonia could have fainted from the pain. But she clenched her fist under the table and stepped her game  up again. She didn’t want to ruin this for her family. And who knows how they would react if she did. If only this headache wouldn’t be. She reached out for the seasoning in front of her to spice up the meat on her plate. Maybe that would bring her senses back a bit. Harmonia noticed that she had to tense her whole arm to keep it from shaking. As she closed her hand around the spice bottle her sleeve slipped up and revealed the start of the bandage. It was tainted red. Harmonia’s breath caught. She checked her clothing when nobody was looking but there was no blood on the. This magic was doing its job. Harmonia urged and begged her brain to work so she could think of some way to get out of here and care for her wounds. But she couldn’t think of anything. Her brain was muffled sirup. Only vaguely she now noticed that her heartbeat was kind of skittish. Just hold out. Just hold out. After nearly collapsing multiple times the meeting was blessedly, finally coming to an end. They said goodbye to their guests and the maids guided them outside.
“Mother, father, I would like to burrow Harmonia to show her the new tools in terms of etiquette I have learned yesterday. May I?”, Older sister asked.
Harmonia was barely conscious at this point but her parents must have agreed because now her sister had grabbed her left arm and was pulling her up from the chair. They made it outside of the room and into one of the lesser visited side rooms before Harmonia fainted.
Her older sister just looked at her for a moment before sighing and starting to take off some layers of fancy clothing. As she uncovered her right arm she sucked in a breath. “I have to get Akisa.”, she decided before getting up and leaving the room. Her medic skilled sibling could surely tend to the wound, it wouldn’t be much more than a simple spell for her, besides she couldn’t create drama by getting a doctor. She locked the door behind her, both to protect Harmonia from getting seen by others and to protect her from herself. And her reckless stubbornness. Then she flew up and searched the mansion.

Louise Henriette Leads Friedrich Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg, to Her Parents
Artist: Gerard van Honthorst (Dutch, 1592–1656
Date: 1649
Medium: OIl on Canvas
Louise Henriette of Nassau (Dutch: Louise Henriëtte van Nassau, German: Luise Henriette von Nassau; 7 December 1627 – 18 June 1667) was a Countess of Nassau, granddaughter of William I, Prince of Orange, "William the Silent", and an Electress of Brandenburg.
Louise Henriëtte was born in The Hague, the eldest daughter of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels. She grew up at the court of her father, the Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders and Overijssel.
Marriage
Louise Henriëtte had to abandon her love for Henri Charles de La Trémoille, Prince of Talmant, son of Henry de La Trémoille, as her mother had royal ambitions for her. However, attempts to conclude an engagement with King Charles II of England came to nothing. Finally she was forced to marry Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg (1620-1688), "the Great Elector," at The Hague on 7 December 1646, her nineteenth birthday, on the proposal of the Brandenburg diplomat Joachim Friedrich von Blumenthal.

About my names (again)
Daily writing promptWhere did your name come from?View all responses The first name I was given, Raffaello, is a traditional Italian choice, bestowed upon me by my parents, in honour of my paternal grandfather. ok 1. very funny to apologise for derailing in response to me driving the train off a cliff but also 2. yes i regret to inform you that this is a take i have seen in the wild, I think through a confusion of the metaphorical and literal senses of "small people doing big things"
Seeing conservatives and bigots being fans of Tolkien works is a special type of jumpscare bcs what are you doing here man? In the franchise about folks from different backgrounds and races come together in brotherhood to vanquish the villain? Where kindness and compassion and sinple happiness were seen as the best ways to keep evil at bay? Where war is not glorified and seen as a grim necessity to the point where the son of the author gor criticised the movies for glorifying the war too much? Where men openly engaged in feminine activities and were open about emotions other than anger? Where multiple characters gender presentation varied from those we normally associate with their gender? Where women were empowered in multiple different ways? Where greed was presented as turning one into a literal monster?Where the villains are all thinly veiled depictions of capitalism? Where care for the enviornment is seen as a given?

Day 1 Drugging, sick, poisoned
TW/CW: Signs of poisoning, family angst, angels, nobility ~ 658 words
Technically she got lucky by getting disowned.
Her target today wouldn’t know the poison. Couldn’t possibly know it. Harmonia shifted her weight to the other leg and the expensive fabric of her dress swayed with her. Unlike those shoes her dress was something that actually brought her joy. She casually looked around the party and let her gaze streak the big crystal clock on the wall. It was almost time. Harmonia swirled her thin glass and looked at the glimmering liquid. Ah fuck it. She thought and drank the remaining drink in one fluid motion.
“Wow, that’s not how you’re supposed to drink that. Then again, you never measured up in that department.”
Harmonia’s eyes narrowed at the voice and she turned around. There, in the same A-line dress style as her stood Selah.
“Always a delight to see you. Sister.”
Her younger sister crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Oh I’m sure it is. So, how are you occupying yourself now? Spouting profanities everywhere? Maybe also associating yourself with ash bathers?”
Harmonia scoffed and smiled at her sister mockingly. "You’re so narrow-minded. You can’t even think of something outside of our picture-perfect theatre.”, Her sister opened her mouth to answer but before she got the chance Harmonia continued, “And since I am, as you are aware, no longer a part of this family it is of no concern to you what I engage in.” Casually she handed her glass to a bypassing server. Selah had winced when Harmonia mentioned her exclusion. For anybody that didn’t know her for as long and well as she does it wouldn’t have been visible.
Selah stretched her wings and raised her chin. “Shouldn’t you address me differently by now, commoner?”
Harmonia chuckled sadly “Huh, no chance, kiddo.”
Her sister’s composed facial expression started to distort and quickly Harmonia stepped close to her. She acted as if she was inspecting an embroidery on her sister’s dress as she spoke with an urgent voice: “You’re slipping ‘Steorra’. I can’t and won’t save you anymore. Come on.”
Selah squeezed her eyes shut for a second, then her face relaxed and she looked at her disgraced sister full of scorn. -Harmonia stepped back again- “Save me? Oh please. I don’t need you to save me. I never did.”
Only Harmonia could see the wish in her eyes and the hurt in her words. But before she could say something more a yell tore through the air.
Hurriedly the two of them stepped to the marble railing that overlooked the room.
Harmonia set up her practiced face. She had to look noble-thus unfaced, but not too noble because she wasn’t supposed to be good at that. She had to look shocked but not too shocked after all it wasn’t a personal friend.
A noble man had collapsed to the floor, wings squeezed underneath him in a surely uncomfortable angle. His friends had crouched down and inspected him. The person with the best healing magic was singled out from the guests and they tried their best.
But Harmonia knew it wouldn’t work, she had made sure of that.
Sweat was covering the noble’s face and his body had gone incredibly pale. He was barely conscious, that is until he started yelling at things only he could see.
Harmonia checked out mentally. It would take a bit for the man to die, even with such a high dosage. And despite her job she didn’t particularly enjoy killing people. She was just good at it.
The man had now started to shiver massively and the sounds leaving his throat were incredibly raspy.
By the time another healer arrived it was already too late.
---
The guests were all questioned and Harmonia effortlessly stuck to her story. After that they were allowed to leave the property. Harmonia got out way before her sister and forcing her gaze forward she left. Back to her current employer. Task successfully executed.

"I think Homer outwits most writers who have written on the War [fantasy archetype], by not taking sides.
The Trojan war is not and you cannot make it be the War of Good vs. Evil. It’s just a war, a wasteful, useless, needless, stupid, protracted, cruel mess full of individual acts of courage, cowardice, nobility, betrayal, limb-hacking-off, and disembowelment. Homer was a Greek and might have been partial to the Greek side, but he had a sense of justice or balance that seems characteristically Greek — maybe his people learned a good deal of it from him? His impartiality is far from dispassionate; the story is a torrent of passionate actions, generous, despicable, magnificent, trivial. But it is unprejudiced. It isn’t Satan vs. Angels. It isn’t Holy Warriors vs. Infidels. It isn’t hobbits vs. orcs. It’s just people vs. people.
Of course you can take sides, and almost everybody does. I try not to, but it’s no use; I just like the Trojans better than the Greeks. But Homer truly doesn’t take sides, and so he permits the story to be tragic. By tragedy, mind and soul are grieved, enlarged, and exalted.
Whether war itself can rise to tragedy, can enlarge and exalt the soul, I leave to those who have been more immediately part of a war than I have. I think some believe that it can, and might say that the opportunity for heroism and tragedy justifies war. I don’t know; all I know is what a poem about a war can do. In any case, war is something human beings do and show no signs of stopping doing, and so it may be less important to condemn it or to justify it than to be able to perceive it as tragic.
But once you take sides, you have lost that ability.
Is it our dominant religion that makes us want war to be between the good guys and the bad guys?
In the War of Good vs. Evil there can be divine or supernal justice but not human tragedy. It is by definition, technically, comic (as in The Divine Comedy): the good guys win. It has a happy ending. If the bad guys beat the good guys, unhappy ending, that’s mere reversal, flip side of the same coin. The author is not impartial. Dystopia is not tragedy.
Milton, a Christian, had to take sides, and couldn’t avoid comedy. He could approach tragedy only by making Evil, in the person of Lucifer, grand, heroic, and even sympathetic — which is faking it. He faked it very well.
Maybe it’s not only Christian habits of thought but the difficulty we all have in growing up that makes us insist justice must favor the good.
After all, 'Let the best man win' doesn’t mean the good man will win. It means, 'This will be a fair fight, no prejudice, no interference — so the best fighter will win it.' If the treacherous bully fairly defeats the nice guy, the treacherous bully is declared champion. This is justice. But it’s the kind of justice that children can’t bear. They rage against it. It’s not fair!
But if children never learn to bear it, they can’t go on to learn that a victory or a defeat in battle, or in any competition other than a purely moral one (whatever that might be), has nothing to do with who is morally better.
Might does not make right — right?
Therefore right does not make might. Right?
But we want it to. 'My strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure.'
If we insist that in the real world the ultimate victor must be the good guy, we’ve sacrificed right to might. (That’s what History does after most wars, when it applauds the victors for their superior virtue as well as their superior firepower.) If we falsify the terms of the competition, handicapping it, so that the good guys may lose the battle but always win the war, we’ve left the real world, we’re in fantasy land — wishful thinking country.
Homer didn’t do wishful thinking.
Homer’s Achilles is a disobedient officer, a sulky, self-pitying teenager who gets his nose out of joint and won’t fight for his own side. A sign that Achilles might grow up someday, if given time, is his love for his friend Patroclus. But his big snit is over a girl he was given to rape but has to give back to his superior officer, which to me rather dims the love story. To me Achilles is not a good guy. But he is a good warrior, a great fighter — even better than the Trojan prime warrior, Hector. Hector is a good guy on any terms — kind husband, kind father, responsible on all counts — a mensch. But right does not make might. Achilles kills him.
The famous Helen plays a quite small part in The Iliad. Because I know that she’ll come through the whole war with not a hair in her blond blow-dry out of place, I see her as opportunistic, immoral, emotionally about as deep as a cookie sheet. But if I believed that the good guys win, that the reward goes to the virtuous, I’d have to see her as an innocent beauty wronged by Fate and saved by the Greeks.
And people do see her that way. Homer lets us each make our own Helen; and so she is immortal.
I don’t know if such nobility of mind (in the sense of the impartial 'noble' gases) is possible to a modern writer of fantasy. Since we have worked so hard to separate History from Fiction, our fantasies are dire warnings, or mere nightmares, or else they are wish fulfillments."
- Ursula K. Le Guin, from No Time to Spare, 2013.
