Big Decision at Amazon: Coventry Workers Vote on Union Rights
More than 3,000 laborers in an Amazon warehouse based in Coventry are in a ballot for a crucial vote that could grant them union rights to negotiate good pay and better conditions. That would be a landmark moment as protests and support came from unions across the United Kingdom. Over 3,000 employees in an Amazon warehouse in Coventry, England, face the most important decision in their lives: voting for a union. They believe that by getting organized, they would be better positioned to increase wage rates and insist on safe working conditions from the organization they work with, Amazon. It is the first such decision on any Amazon website online in the United Kingdom. The vote-casting process, which began on Monday, will see employees vote until Saturday. As it were, there has been an extended fight between the unions for change and Amazon concerning people's rights. GMB union has spearheaded the charge for reputation in unions; therefore, Amazon could formally recognize the position of the union in representing its people. The impartial body, the Central Arbitration Committee, granted workers the right to retain this crucial vote. This was after the GMB union had campaigned for this because Amazon had refused to voluntarily recognize the union. If the majority of workers vote to support union popularity, then the GMB union would represent them in any negotiation with Amazon. It could prove to be a good trade as Amazon had never recognized unions at its UK sites earlier. The results on the vote are expected next week.According to Andy Prendergast, the national secretary for the GMB, the reason behind employees' coming together was due to low pay during hazardous working conditions at Amazon. He mentioned GMB participants face problems and fears from Amazon management because they might fight back for better conditions.Workers in Coventry have been involved in efforts for over a year, demanding a minimum wage of £15 an hour and having a say in how working conditions are decided. Workers say that Amazon has used processes to deter union activity, including displaying QR codes that cancel union memberships if scanned. Across the UK, there is medium-sized support for Coventry workers. Protestations are under way not just in Coventry but at a number of other Amazon sites, including Warrington, Dunfermline, Swansea, and Tilbury. There will also be a rally outside Amazon's headquarters in London. Kate Bell from the TUC, an umbrella body for unions, will be attending in solidarity. The Coventry vote is a vital second in a fight that began years ago through the unions for better pay and conditions inside Amazon warehouses around the country. Other Amazon workers are already union members, but Coventry has the highest number of awareness of union supporters. The timing of this vote is also important. It took place only weeks after the victory of Labour in the general elections. As part of its campaign, Labour had pledged to enhance the rights of employees and, more specifically, to facilitate unions' operation in workplaces across Britain. That constituted an element of their platform under the name of the "new deal for working people.".Yet, despite Amazon saying starting pay has increased significantly since 2018 and that they offer a great place to work with a real set of benefits and career prospects, Coventry workers and their supporters vow to keep the pressure on for union recognition – believing a union will give them more of a say in the negotiation of fair treatment. In summary, the vote in Coventry signifies a major moment in the continuing debate about workers' rights at Amazon. It reflects a broader struggle taking place across the UK for increased pay, safer conditions at work, and more respect for the voices of employees. Any eventual outcome from this vote should ultimately create a precedent for other sites at Amazon and shape how unions are viewed and backed in the future. Read the full article

Wilko: New bid emerges for stricken retail chain

By Vivienne Nunis & Nick Edser
Business reporters, BBC News
A fresh rescue bid for Wilko has emerged as efforts to save the retail chain continue.
Private equity firm M2 Capital has confirmed it has made a £90m bid for the business, and has pledged to retain all employees’ jobs for two years.
The bid by M2, first reported by the Guardian, is one of several offers being considered by administrators.
Wilko fell into administration earlier this month, putting 12,500 jobs and 400 stores at risk.
The administrators for Wilko, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), set a deadline of Friday last week for bids for the chain, and are understood to be reviewing offers over the weekend.
M2 managing director Robert Mantse told the BBC that if the firm’s rescue bid was accepted, M2 would “guarantee all employees’ jobs for two years”.
Responding to the news, the national secretary of the GMB union, Andy Prendergast, said that while “the devil is always in the detail… any bid that guarantees jobs has to be prioritised”.
Last week, it also emerged that the owner of HMV, Canadian businessman Doug Putman, is also interested in salvaging some of the Wilko business.
It is understood his bid would seek to keep the majority of the chain’s stores open.
A spokesperson for PwC said talks were “continuing with a number of parties”.
“As administrators we’re intent on achieving the best outcome for everyone involved while preserving as many jobs as possible and adhering to our statutory duty to act in the best interests of the creditors as a whole.”It would be inappropriate to comment on individual bidders or interested parties at this stage in the process.”
Wilko, well known for its affordable everyday items, has been struggling with sharp losses and a cash shortage.
It has also been criticised for falling behind rivals such as B&M, Poundland, The Range and Home Bargains, as the high cost of living has pushed shoppers to seek out bargains.
What has gone wrong at Wilko?
What’s next for Wilko and its 12,500 workers?
Wilko had already borrowed £40m from restructuring specialist Hilco, cut jobs, rejigged its leadership team and sold off a distribution centre as it faced a cash squeeze.
Shoppers had also noticed gaps on shelves after Wilko struggled to pay suppliers and at least one credit insurer withdrew trade cover, prompting some companies to pause deliveries.
However, Lisa Wilkinson, the retailer’s chairwoman until January this year and the granddaughter of the firm’s founder, has said “everybody has thrown everything” at trying to save the business.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, she said: “The team members, the suppliers, the landlords… everybody has thrown their soul and heart at it.”
The company has been criticised for paying dividends in recent years, but Ms Wilkinson said the firm would have collapsed even if it had not made these payments.
“Hindsight is a great bedfellow and I like to think we did all the things we should do when we paid dividends,” she told the paper. “The board checked that we’d got profits or reserved profits, there was sufficient cash, we went through the right governance, the auditors checked it off.”
Getty Images
She added that if they had not paid any dividends “it might have made us survive a couple of months longer. What we have taken out really wouldn’t have made a difference”.
But the GMB union’s Andy Prendergast said: “12,500 workers are facing redundancy – through no fault of their own.”
He criticised Ms Wilkinson for her comments, saying she did not “address her workers and face their concerns”. He added that her remarks were “in poor taste when workers don’t know how they’re going to make ends meet in a few weeks’ time”.
The business was founded in 1930 when JK Wilkinson opened his first store in Leicester. It expanded across the Midlands initially and by the 1990s became one of Britain’s fastest-growing retailers.
In 2012, Wilkinson began rebranding its stores as Wilko, after its own-brand products marketed under the Wilko name.

Unions could coordinate strike action across NHS for ‘maximum impact’, GMB boss says | Politics News
Union leaders could coordinate industrial action across the NHS this winter to cause “maximum impact”, the head of the GMB has suggested. Andy Prendergast, the GMB national secretary, said health workers have had enough of “public school boys who run the government and simply don’t care” about their pay demands. More than 10,000 ambulance workers from the GMB voted to strike yesterday, following…

Depeche Mode - The Show Must Go On Forty-plus years into a quite extraordinary career, Depeche Mode remain the most successful electronic band ever, having to date sold over 100 million records worldwide. The group have had 54 songs in the UK Singles Chart and 17 Top 10 albums in the UK chart; they have sold more than 100 million records worldwide. And as they continue to release new and challenging material and perform in front of crowds that can exceed 80,000 in a single night, the enormous popularity of these former Essex Boys illustrates how their resolute determination to stick with their original vision has repaid them handsomely in the long term. This documentary film traces the almost surreal development of Depeche Mode from their flirtations with New Romanticism at the dawn of their career, through the urban industrial landscapes envisaged on Construction Time Again and Some Great Reward into the dark hollow of albums such as Black Celebration, Music For The Masses and Violator to conclude with the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995 - a point in their career at which they had achieved enormous commercial success but were now facing huge personal challenges. Featuring interviews with all the band members, contributions from friends, colleagues and contemporaries such as; Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, OMD's Andy McCluskey, Daniel Miller, band biographer Jonathan Miller, Depeche producers Gareth Jones, Dave Bascombe, Phil Legg and Steve Lyon, and electronic music experts Mark Prendergast and David Stubbs. Also includes archive footage, video clips, location shoots, news reports and much more. EXTRA FEATURES INCLUDE - Extended interviews, Contributor Biographies.

Conan O’Brien Is The Weird Sex God Of My Hot Nightmares by Kate Prendergast
Conan O’Brien is by the harbour! I blazed over, panting. He was no longer at the harbour! I George Michaeled it back, aching.
Now he’s in Redfern! Now he’s wearing a leather vest in the bush! Now… No. I was only in Hyde Park an hour ago. Now he’s there talking with common plebs to feature in his Netflix series. I could’ve been a pleb star! It could have been me propping up an Aussie stereotype!
Savagely minimising Instagram, wiping hot tears from my screen, I cursed the spiteful universe for keeping me from my ginger, flamingo-legged love.
I discovered the inexplicable freakish allure of Conan O’Brien about a year ago, wearing just my panties. I was in my tiny studio apartment, exercising with the two 1kg weights I lift with. It was hot and I was sweaty, hence the proximal nakedness. Lifting was the only form of exercise I undertook when I had a full-time job. Now I have no full-time job and a gym membership. I’m a 4kg strongwoman! Watch me struggle.
Anyway, I like to laugh and lift at the same time, because endorphins give me strength, exercise is boring af, and it means I can work my abs too. (Multitasking is a millennial gift.) My default for the last few months had been YouTubing Colbert – but he was getting on my nerves. I didn’t laugh at his kind of Christian-y satire and Trump impersonations, so much as I did pull back my lips and emit a soft, bitter ‘heeeh’. My abs were getting spongy.
I hit up Team Coco. Shining with sweat, I beheld its leader. His hair had the look of a carrot cake-flavoured sundae swirl, coiffed like Johnny Bravo with a hint of Munroe. He had tiny, glacial eyes, full of crazed merriment, but also death. His white face jostled above a compact unit of a torso, from which erupted limbs so tremendously long, they seemed to require scaffolding. Translucently pale, under the studio lights he glowed.
I put my figurative straw of horniness to my quivering, engorged lips, plunged it into the aura of this Simpsons historied, Harvard-educated, longest-running late night comedy host, and inhaled. I had not realised how parched I was. How thirsty.
My weights hung limp from my tiny wrists.
I remain baffled by this thirst. His sidekick Andy Richter is more my type: big and friendly and cuddly. Show me a man who isn’t Very Generously Padded and I forget either of us have sexual organs.
But there’s just something about Conan O’Brien that does it for me. That maniacal energy. The thrilling possibility that anarchy could break out at any moment. The absurd tyranny of his make-believe Conan kingdom, where the abuse of staff is an ongoing gag. But cutest of all, there’s that loveable ease with which he laughs at others and himself.
It’s beautiful. It’s surreal. It’s hot.
He’s so fucking weird.
I imagine him astride the horse that David Letterman gave him, his fountain spray of hair impervious to any breeze. I fantasise about shoving aside the gorgeous bitch who greeted him at Sydney airport with a themed balloon, and nestling myself against his towering form instead. At the gym on my stationary bike, I smile as he yells intimately into my ears on Conan Needs A Friend, talking with all my favourite people, like Nick Offerman (about the eldritch qualities of wood) and David Sedaris (about the tumour that Sedaris fed to a snapping turtle).
Pair him with international jazz cat of bizarre sensual charm Jeff Goldblum, and I hardly know where to look.
Despite my best stalking efforts, I never did so much as catch the scent of whatever tonnage of hair gel Conan O’Brien uses to prop up his mop. When he visited us in February, it was the first time he’d ever toured Down Under. I missed his show at the State Theatre, where he savaged Sydney’s lockout laws, securing my devotion once and for all. I am afraid he will never return.
At least I’ll always have this.

Who are Ireland playing on their 2022/23 summer visit? Ireland will head the entire way to New Zealand for their 2022 visit. A five-match trip remembers three Tests against the All Blacks for Auckland, Dunedin and Wellington, and two matches against the Maori All Blacks.
This will be Ireland's most memorable outing to New Zealand starting around 2012, and the guests will need to fail to remember perhaps of the most terrible night in their cutting edge history: a 60-0 destroying in Hamilton.
Ireland have confronted New Zealand multiple times altogether, winning only three of those matches. They have lost every one of the 12 internationals played away against the Kiwis.

This one is a little heartbreaking. The caption tells the story:
On December 4, 2017, President Trump declared a drastic reduction of Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments. This is the largest elimination of protected land in American history…and the President had made his decision without ever stepping foot there.
On January 13, 2018, we gathered a group of friends and ran 250 miles across both monuments in a single weekend to see for ourselves what would be left unprotected.
Now more than ever we believe in celebrating the things that unite us. Our run was about finding commonalities in the midst of a divisive political landscape and standing in coalescence— tribal members, athletes, dirtbags — for our public lands. We hope our footsteps carry a message: wild places are worth protecting, and sometimes the first step in doing that is to take another.

HELEN KLEEB
January 6, 1907
Helen Kleeb was born in South Bend, Washington. She began acting on stage and on radio in Portland, Oregon, in the late 1920s. She is best remembered as Miss Mamie Baldwin (one of the moonshiner Baldwin Sisters) on “The Waltons” (1972-81) as well as in four Waltons specials.
Her screen debut was also her television debut, at age 45, when she was featured on the anthology series “Rebound” on March 7, 1952.
In 1955, she played Miss Klein secretary to MGM’s Mr. Reilly (Parley Baer) in “Ricky Needs an Agent” (ILL S4;E29) filmed on April 7, 1955 and first aired on May 16, 1955. This was her only appearance on the series and the only time she acted opposite Lucille Ball.
Coincidentally, Kleeb also appeared with Parley Baer in the a 1962 episode of “The Andy Griffith Show,” also shot at Desilu.
In mid-August 1955, Kleeb showed up on “I Love Lucy’s” summer replacement series, produced by Desilu, “Those Whiting Girls.”
A year later, Kleeb was back at Desilu for their Western “The Sheriff of Cochise” in an episode titled “The Red-Haired Visitor.” No, that red-haired visitor was NOT Lucille Ball!
Continuing her annual visits to Desilu Studios, Kleeb did a September 1957 episode of "Date with the Angels" which was directed by James V. Kern, who'd performed the same job on the final two seasons of "I Love Lucy,” although William Asher directed Kleeb in “Ricky Needs an Agent.”
Two months later she was seen in an episode of “The Adventures of Jim Bowie” filmed at Desilu Studios.
In June 1959, Kleeb was on Desilu’s “The Ann Sothern Show.” Four months later, Lucille Ball guest-starred on the series as Lucy Ricardo.
From 1960 to 1961, Kleeb played the recurring character of secretary Miss Claridge (above center) on Desilu’s “Harrigan and Son” doing 5 out of its 34 episodes.
In 1962, she played a nurse on an episode of Desilu’s hit gangster series “The Untouchables.” This would be her final time appearing for Desilu, but she would continue acting on television, becoming a recognizable and best loved character actor.
Her final screen credit was playing Miss Mamie Baldwin on “A Walton Easter” (1997).
Kleeb was married to John Gerald Prendergast from 1937 to 1950 and Elmer Garrison from 1959 until her passing. She died on December 28, 2003 at age 96.
