i think its funny when during the morning/day i see posts that are like "good morning lets not kill ourselves today" and "have a good day, survive" and at night on the same day i see stuff like "when i cant control how people percieve me" and "im unloveable", it truly shows what its like being alive and what it being well over sunset does to people

Pairing: Joel Miller x reader.
Summary: Joel's feelings bloomed even before the outbreak. 20 years, a lot of losses and survival later, he finally finds one of his missing pieces. A Joel Miller one shot.
A/N: bro I have NO IDEA of when I actually wrote this, I just remember it taking me a few days to finish, and I never posted it bc I tought it was bad, but now I reread this and OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS IS WONDERFUL?! Hope you guys like it as much as I did :)
Warnings: hurt/comfort, crying, soft Joel, drinking, swearing, lil bit of angst, happy ending, this thing is long af, it's been a long while since I watched the show/saw anything about the game so it might be a little out of character or just "off" in general, there's not really any mentions of gender for reader so here you go my fellow non binaries :D
Anyways, let's get to the fic.
You knew Joel.
Before the outbreak he was a single father, a very caring and loving one. Being his neighbor meant seeing him every now and then, being that type of colleague you see once in a while and say hi.
At least for the other neighbors.
You, in the other hand, was much more close than that.
To start with the fact that Tommy was your best friend, you two met at high school and became inseparable, so naturally you would know his brother, Joel, and his niece, Sarah. You always lived there, nearby, so it was normal for you to hang out with both brothers whenever you could and even take care of Sarah when Joel would come home late from work. You knew her since she was born and, hell, she was almost part of your family too.
Not that you would admit it out loud though. But you really cared for her, and for her father.
As you grew closer to Tommy, you grew inevitably closer to Joel as well. Since you met him you knew he was a cool guy, respectful but yet playful, not like the guys you met before that only talked about hooking up and making out, no, Joel was gentle and friendly and, when you know him, talkative. It always drew your attention how he looked after Tommy and, later on, Sarah. it was endearing to see.
When Sarah was 12, you moved in the house right next to Joel's, wich was the number one reason you became so close to him.
Oftenly you picked Sarah from school and had her sleep in your house because Joel would come home late, always recieving an apologizing look and a shy smile the morning after when he would come to take her home and, oh! How you loved that smile.
To "pay his debt" (as he liked to say) he'd take you out to some bar or a restaurant whenever Sarah went on a sleepover at a friend's house, and you two always ended up sitting on the corner just sipping on your drinks and talking about life, giving each other advice, sharing life experiences, and above all having a good time. He'd also not drink any alcohol just to drive you home safe, and refuse to listen to any of your protests.
One night you were at a restaurant, on the other side of the city, talking like always and Joel laughed at something you said, genuinely laughed. And that was when you realized you had fell in love with the man, you were always giving him those looks and scarlet cheeks without even noticing, until this night came and changed everything, you were now aware of every little glance, casual touch, any smile and laugh he gives you, you were drunk i this feeling.
But Joel? Oh, he already knew that for so long.
The moment for him was when you came to lunch with him and Sarah at his house, something around a year before. You helped him cook the meal, wich made him notice how much better that dish tasted with your touch to it whether it being just your presence or the ingredients you put, he wasn't quite sure yet.
After you all ate, you sat on the couch and Sarah suggested to put on some music, and right after that start looking through Joel's vinil collection. Let's say she knew what she was doing, first she put on some rock, Gun's and Roses, just in the ambience as you both talked and she washed the dishes. After that she found the vinil Joel had bought only and exclusively because you recommended from a band you really like, you say it reminds you of home, as your father used to play those songs all the time.
He watched as your eyes went wide with a look of excitement when realization washed over you, the melody forcing you to your feet and pulling Sarah. You rocked back and forth, dancing with the teenage girl, as you sang with the most wonderful voice you ever had.
The sparkle in your eyes mixed with Sarah's laughs and the vibe of the song made him realize how much of a wonderful person you are. Always kind to other and wiling to go out of your way to help someone, your charming personality and your unique style, oh! How much he loved that.
Joel not only saw your gorgeous features but also you, the real you. That is scared of thunders, that loves music, that cooks like a chef and have those little quirks and mannerisms he picked up unconsciously, all of that drove him out of his mind and he loved the feeling of loving you, it made him feel alive. Of course seeing how much Sarah likes you too and the way you're so caring towards her just makes it clear: you're the one for him.
Joel's drunk into it since that day. Every time you wave at him from your yard, every time he takes you to these restaurants and bars, when he sees you in his passanger seat, and the fact you just grow more and more admirable to him... It only makes him want you even more, it makes him want to be the one to treat you right after seeing so many partners destroy you. He'd glue pice by piece if needed.
Talking of bars... In one of those times you two went out, you decided to leave the bar you were at and go back to Joel's place. The food at the bar was absurdly expensive and your stomachs were grumbling way too loud for you to just spend the rest of the night there.
Once you got to his house, he made two sandwiches for the both of you and you ate slowly, never losing the topic you were talking about. When you two finished, Joel went to wash the dishes and once again you decided to put on some music.
Looking through his vinils you saw one you also had, a very very old one, dated in the 40's/50's. It started to spin and a few songs into it, it started playing one you really liked: 'Cheek to Cheek - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong'. By that time Joel had already finished, he walked into the living room still wiping his hands with a towel when you started swaying around to the calm yet enthusiastic beat.
Moving your hips, you felt the melody entering your body and giving you the best feeling of peace. For Joel you looked ethereal in such form, unworried and calm.
A tought crossed his mind and he acted on it before the opportunity scaped. Joel approached you behind your back as you still had your eyes shut closed, feeling yourself through the song, he then placed his right hang on your waist testing the waters. First he had to know if you were okay with that, little did he know you were melting inside, unable to come up with something to do or say in that moment, so you just kept going, like nothing was happening.
As you didn't show any sign of discomfort or didn't flinch from his touch, he placed the left hand on the assigned place on your waist like it was supposed to be there for so long. Now becoming more comfortable, he swayed with you and came even closer, with that your hands automatically went to his, guiding them lower to your hips.
It felt like a dream for the both of you, and of course you wouldn't ruin it with any obvious comment, so you just accepted each other's presences and enjoyed it.
By the middle of the song you kept your hands in his as you turned to face him, still dancing lightly.
Joel looked into your beautifully colored irises and saw the contentment, making him bloom a smile of his own. As you also stared at his honey eyes you placed your arms on both sides of his head, lightly and gently wrapping your fingers around the back of his neck.
Ever so slowly you approached each other unconsciously, ending up doing exactly what the music says, dancing cheek to cheek.
In a few moments you pulled back, just to look at him in the eyes again, now you saw the desire and all the unspoken words and your eyes dropped to his mouth, slightly open and awaiting for what comes next. Yet you decided to speak up before things got confusing.
"I, uhm..." You start, looking down "I really like you Joel, and I don't mean just as a friend or in a way to get this situation to increase... I really do like you, and I have for a time now" now you look into his eyes again.
Joel seems surprised, probably much more because you had the courage to say it first than with the actual statemente, he already suspected your feelings. He opened his mouth a few times, looking for the best words to not fuck this up.
Before starting he let out a relieved breath "when I'm with you I feel alive" he let's out "You make my days a little bit brighter and you bring the colors of love back into my life" Joel laughs "gosh, I'm not even good with words but for you I have practiced this speech for so long... Waiting for the day I would be able to call you mine".
His gaze soft yet eager for you, analyzing every reaction of yours, he's been waiting for so long, poor man. While you're still processing what he just said.
"then do it, I've been your's for so long already" you breath out, coming closer again, but thus time your lips finally touch.
After that, what I can say is that your relationship is solid as rock, you love each other so much and absolutely no one can get into it, you are inseparable.
... Well, at least you thought.
A few days before the outbreak it was your father's birthday and you couldn't just not see him like the past two years, you decided to visit him, perfect timing for disaster.
As the snow falls outside the window of your house in Jackson, you remember it all like it was yesterday...
"Are you sure you don't want to come with me?" - you ask Joel as you hold onto his jacket. He just returns with a chuckle.
"C'mon! There's still time! You go home, pack your's and Sarah's things and I buy you two tickets, what do you think?" - you try again.
"You know I can't just leave everything behind, love. Sarah has school and I'm about to take that project" - Joel plants a kiss to your temple.
You're disappointed but not surprised, you alredy knew he couldn't come with you, but something within told you to push him and Sarah into that bus with you. Maybe it was just the idea of being three weeks away from your boyfriend, but there was still a bad feeling in you that you can't seem to get rid of.
He locks eyes with you, his honey eyes always seemed the things to calm you down don't matter what happened, and he opened his mouth to say something but the words never came out, you decide to talk then.
"I know love, I just... Have a bad feeling, you know?" - you sigh, looking to the ground then back at him.
"I'll miss you a lot" - you confess.
His gaze softens, with his hands wrapped around your face he leans to a kiss, that is interrupted by an announcement on the speakers, saying your bus was waiting.
Joel gives you one last peck on the lips before pulling you into his embrace. The man is not very good with words, you know that, so this is his way of saying 'I'll miss you too'.
When you pull back, his big brown eyes are filled with unshed tears, sight that make your own set water up. Painfully you break free from his grip, slowly walking away as the tears rolled down both of your cheeks.
...
When you first came to Jackson and you saw Tommy again after 20 years, you had talked to him about... Well, over all everything that happened but mostly what happened to Joel.
But Tommy isn't dumb, he knows who you are even after 20 years apart, he knows if he ever tells you where Joel is you would go flying to him in the same instant, but with all those ridlers and infected around he couldn't handle the idea of letting you go, even more after just reuniting with his biggest friend. He won't risk it.
When you two sat and talked, you asked him if he knew where Joel was, but Tommy shrugged, said in a breath that he just didn't talk to him for a long time and, as Joel is, he probably didn't stay in the same place for too long.
He also tol you about Sarah... With a painful voice he told you how he just watched as he lost his niece and his brother on the same night, because Joel just... Wasn't the same anymore, he changed, he did things (but Tommy never told what things)... Joel isn't the same man you met 20 years ago.
"Well, I didn't expect him to be the same" - that's what you told him, gaining a pitiful gaze from your friend.
Tommy feels pity for you, he thinks you're so lost in the world, and that you need for a purpose so bad, you will chase down any opportunity to go back to that old life of yours. You told him it wasn't about it but of couse he never listened, he just wished for you to wake up to reality, wich in his mind was, that you are now safe, in a place you can live the rest of your life in peace.
But it didn't erase your deep sadness.
It's been five months since you came to Jackson, it haven't been half as bad as you tought it would be, actually people here are neighbourly, everyone helps everyone. Gosh, you like this place. But you can't forget how lonely you feel now.
Of course, there's Tommy and his wife, but now you live alone in this enormous house he got you. Such a huge place and nothing to fill it with if not solitude. But the worst part of it is how seeing Tommy again resurfaced the feelings for Joel you so long burried away, as the only way you found of copig with the fact you would never see him again.
The problem is that now there is hope.
And suddently the urge to know more, to find him, hits you. You can find him, you just need the right clues.
You came back to your house, unlocking the door and shutting it behind you, you saw the map spread over the dining table and for a brief moment the possibility of staying and just... Leaving Joel be, crossed your mind. For a moment it doesn't seem so bad after all... If he didn't come to you before, why would he want you now? The person who took people's lives, who learned how to use a gun on their own, who can't sleep at night with the ghosts of the people they killed... You're not yourself anymore, why would he want you back?
But before you could think further into it, a knock behind you brings you back into reality. Turning the knob again to open it, you saw Tommy, in an euphoric state.
"You need to come with me, right now" - The man says with a wide smile across his face.
You're still clueless - "What happened?".
Before answering he pulled our of the door, dragging you by your arm across the street, right to the construction he was helping with.
You see the horses and recognize some of the people standing with them, but there's one little girl, around 13 or 14 years old, you can't record.
Abruptly Tommy stops to turn to you, with tears on his eyes - "someone heard your prayers, my friend".
He then placed a hand on your shoulder, leading you into the crowd of people, as you got further into it, your eyes catch Maria talking to a man, his salt and pepper hair falling over his eyebrows and then you saw it.
His big brown eyes.
Staring into your own.
Your heart drops and your knees turn weak. How are you even still standing?
"Joel?" - you call his name, but he is still unsure if it's a dream or not.
His heart beats loud on his ears with the realization, you are alive.
Tommy lets go of your shoulder and you waste no time in running to Joel, straight to the safety of his arms, safety you longed during 20 years. But yet he stays froze in place, maybe his mind was tricking him? Could it be an hallucination? He's tired and haven't slept in at least three days, he can't just trust his eyes right away.
But it is not necessary.
You finally get to him and he don't hesitate, his hands reaching for both sides of your face as he examinates it. Your gaze never leaving his as well.
Desperate arms pull you into his embrace. He smells like wet grass and wood, not the expensive cologne he used to wear when going out with you, but it isn't a problem. After all you found him, or better saying, he found you.
Joel tuck his fingers around the back of your neck and under your hair as he wishes to get closer to you, if it's possible. And he cries.
You hear his snifles on your ear and feel his tears leaving a wet spot on you jacket.
Joel's not good with words, you know that, but this is him saying "I missed you". This is him telling you about Sarah, Tess and how he lost himself the night of the outbreak, and it doesn't need one word to make you understand. He lost everything. But for what it seems, he just found everything again.

Dude did you know/read -2+2 before i started interacting with your posts here or did you heard of it from seing me ramble about it? Also PLEASE get your work done first! This chapter is enormous and i wouldn't want it to ruin someone's schedule.
Also I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, not necessarily just the trial it could be of the story in general, if you feel like rambling that is ^^'
Don't worry, I spent my entire morning finishing my textbook chapter and completing a video question that I could finish in like, five minutes tops. I even shut off Discord to focus. It took four hours of my day to complete cause that's college for ya, haha. :']
Yeah, I read -2+2 before we ever interacted on Tumblr! Ngl, I didn't realize the author was you until I scrolled through your Kizuna tag on your blog and went, "hey, wait a minute, I read this fic-!" As for my thoughts on it so far, I loooove it! I love how Kizuna is forced to face the consequences of her actions while Ayame is grappling with the fact that she was this close to choosing to kill someone to save another and that her motivations weren't as pure and good that everyone makes it out to be for saving Kizuna. I love seeing how different the group dynamics have become thanks to how everyone is split up: the majority of the students sticking together, Yuki being forced out of that group due to his secret note but ultimately forming a little trio with Akane and Ayame (and I think Kizuna and Kanata, too, but they're more focused on each other atm when it comes to her recovery), and the lone wolves of Rei, Tsurugi, and Kinji. It really shows how fractured the group has become and that everyone's opinions are pretty complex and different from each other's, even when they stick to one side. I have yet to read the trial as of writing this, but Kanata's death hurts to witness, especially with how...simple it was. I believe she didn't even struggle, she was just sleeping and now, she can never wake up because someone (Kinji) took advantage of that vulnerability and killed her. I'm thinking that Kakeru, at some point, seemed to have walked in and saw what happened, whether it's his attack on Kizuna or Kanata, and tried to attack Kinji or stop him or something but I'm not sure. But her death definitely hits harder due to how simple it is and we can focus on the tragedy that Kizuna will never be able to fulfill the promises she gave to Kanata, her first friend. And how her grief quickly transforms into anger...ooooough, that's so good and in character for her, especially with how hard she's trying to improve herself now. Also, can I just say, I love how socially smart Kizuna is with her words and how she was able to bypass the third motive just by being clever with how she says things. There are many different ways for being intelligence, so seeing that play out with a character that is trying to redeem themselves is great. Ayame is also just...doing her best while grappling with herself and the thought of almost actually murdering someone, but is trying to be supportive of the others. At least being able to confide in Akane allows her to keep going, and she gets to befriend Yuki! It's so sweet...until you remember the twists with these two, haha, gotta love that dramatic irony. Oh, if (or when) we actually get there, that angst is going to huuurt. </3
Anyways, I do love rambling. And I love this fic! (Totally off-topic, but I hope my boy Teruya is gonna be okay from the whole near death experience of guns and stuff. He's gonna be okay, right? Right? I hope he's okay. I don't want anything bad to happen to him even though I know that's gonna be impossible in a killing game genre although I know his survival is pretty much guaranteed since you mentioned that you don't plan to change the death order. Doesn't mean I don't worry for his mental health though.)

Day 4 in Nantucket
The hormones have quieted their rage, this post should be less emotional.
During my stay in Boston this summer I met a handful of people that I hope to know forever. It was an all female deployment for the summer - 55 of us to be exact. I’ll be honest, hearing all females was a bit concerning for me but the friendships I formed were more than I imagined I’d gain.
In the beginning I had been paired up with someone and we will call her E for her privacy’s sake. We clicked pretty quickly and E wasted no time showing me the ropes, as it was my first deployment for work. She will never understand how grateful I am for her and the way she put my nerves at ease. For weeks it was her and I, wandering around in target or total wine and more. Sharing stories and trying samples - we made plans for our summer ahead. Her family was coming and without even meeting me they had welcomed me in all their plans. I couldn’t wait, I love an adopted family ♥️ we each had a week back at home coming up and for whatever reason, o was struck with the fear that I wouldn’t see her again, as if she weren’t coming back. Her week at home was first, I managed to survive because the folks at work were amazing and kept me company. She came back and it was my turn. Sure enough, while at home, she informs me her orders have changed and she is reporting back at home for good. She would not be returning to Boston. This change would happen after I came back so I was grateful to have the chance to say goodbye. Just like that, our plans were cancelled. Shortly after she told me about her changed orders, I was informed I would be moving to a later shift in a different area. I was getting anxious all over again. I had finally found some peace and it was being ripped from under me. I knew this was always a possibility - changes like this are not unheard of. In fact, it why they encourage us not to make plans too far out, as you never know what’s coming up.
When I returned to Boston and I had to take E’s word for it that I would be okay. She’s been on the road much longer than I have and she hadn’t steered me wrong yet.. I tried to be positive but inside, I was panicking. As I’ve mentioned before.. my abandonment issues run deep and although this wasn’t her choice to “abandon” me, it was a loss of comfort and support for me. I was almost angry I had allowed myself to get as close with her as I did. Why bother forming friendships? I decided then that I would keep folks at arms length and just focus on work. E and I had one last hoorah at the local casino 🥲 after losing our money we headed back to the hotel and ate and laughed until I woke in my room the next morning. I don’t remember making it back to my room, I could only remember us laughing which made me so sad.
I was starting my new shift and I was more than nervous. Before this change, it was only E and I at our location… this time, I would be with at least a dozen other females that I had yet to meet.
The work gods were really watching out for me because then I met a dozen more people that now have special places in my heart.
One in particular, we will be referring to her as A. Within minutes of meeting each other, we were laughing and roasting each other. More so me roasting her but she played along with it well and I knew we were going to get along just fine. We began making plans and sharing stories of our lives back at home. I’m not sure we were apart except to sleep In our own rooms at night. We visited Salem .. probably three times… got tattoos in Rhode Island together and I even got to meet her best friend from back home (who was as amazing as A was). We were even moved locations AGAIN together, because our boss saw that we had bonded, so she made sure to relocate us together. Forever grateful for boss lady 🏾 The end of our deployment crept up pretty quickly, quicker than I imagine and though we were both ready to be home, I know we both were bumming that we wouldn’t be with each other anymore.
Rumors of extensions were looming over us which made us nervous. It had already been four months away from home so neither of us wanted to stick around but IF an extension were to come, I hoped we would at least have each other, though neither of us wanted it for the other either. We squished as many activities as we could into our last moments together and I know we were both exhausted but we had no time to spare anymore.
Here I am, months later and we still speak, if not daily, we only miss a few days without speaking. She’s literally across the country.. we are as far apart as we possibly could be 🥲 but we have decided to do our own little book club ♥️ yes, another book worm like me.
As a reader of this blog, you should expect book reviews coming your way and hey, if you wanna join along, here’s the first book A and I will be diving into.

@pushingsian requested “all the AUs” and “more Nathaly/Kaidan smooching”.  In this spirit, here is a bit from a Normandy and Shepard survive Alchera AU.  In my long fic, Discovery, Kaidan had elected to leave the Normandy in order to continue his relationship with Shepard in the light of day rather than continue to hide it. This fic picks up there.
Also on AO3.

Two weeks into his first tour aboard the SSV Agincourt, Kaidan Alenko took a deep breath, and submitted his personal vid comm request form to the communications officer. And then, out of anxiety, not-so-subtly loitered by her station as she processed it.
That was a mistake, because she couldn’t resist asking the question.  “You want to use your personal comm time to chat with your previous C.O.”
A dozen possible answers warred within his mind, each loudly asserting its pros and cons.  Consequently it took him a hair too long to speak, his tone just a touch too careful, too artificial.  “Is that a problem?”
Her sidelong glance carried conclusions and judgment, at least in his agitated imagination. Speculation on why he’d chosen to leave the Normandy had run rampant.  But there was nothing technically disallowed about the request, and so she merely shrugged. “Comm room’s free now, if you’d like some…privacy.”
He wasn’t blushing.  God, he hoped he wasn’t blushing.  “Thank you.”
Stiffly, Alenko turned on his heel and left the deck.
Aboard this ship, the comm room was on the third deck, and his internal sense of cringe and mild panic did not dissipate until he crossed the threshold of the hatch. That was the moment he saw the SSV Normandy standing by message on the vid screen, just beside the holoprojector, and every muscle in his body unclenched for the first time since he left her on the Citadel.  He knew, he knew, Nathaly was fine.  They emailed each other constantly.  He’d have heard immediately if anything happened to her.  But he also knew the scrapes that inevitably fell into her path, when she wasn’t actively seeking them for reasons beyond his comprehension or control, and when she wasn’t with him, bodily, well, that was a wide-open barn door for doubt.
He hit the button to initiate the transmission with an almost desperate eagerness.  And there she was.  Uniform a bit rumpled, hair pulled back into its customary bun. Her holo tinged faintly blue by the transmission and wavering here and there, making her eyes seem even deeper than usual, and her freckles washed out.  Her face split into a grin as soon as he came into view.
Nathaly let out a long, contented sigh and said, “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to see you.”
“Well, the walk took about three minutes.  Maybe four,” he teased.  His own smile had grown so wide his face hurt.
She let out a burst of laughter—pure sunshine, here in deep space—and sat back on her heel, crossing her arms.  “I hate this.”
“Well, I’m not apologizing again for requesting the transfer.”  He’d never really apologized in the first place, but he understood how hard it had been for her to accept.  It’d been hard enough for him to do.  His eyes softened.  “I miss you.”
“Half the time I turn around and still expect to find you,” she admitted, rueful.  “I’m not used to it quite yet.”
“Me, neither. I wake up full of things I want to tell you.”  Somehow making it less moping and more earnest.
Nathaly, as usual, was not at all sentimental.  “So that’s why there’s a long email waiting for me every morning when I get out of the shower.”
He smirked, mirroring her stance by folding his own arms.  “You never seem to take long to reply.”
“I had to push my morning brief back twenty minutes,” she complained, fighting not to laugh.
“I’m sure your officers hate being able to sleep a little later.”  Her habits were legendary.  Kaidan did not miss that even a little.
Well, maybe a little.
Not that he would admit it.
Maybe she suspected, because Nathaly raised an eyebrow, but said only, “The new marine detail commander Hackett sent me needs a lot of breaking in.”
“Don’t be too hard on her.  It’s a rough position, as unique as the Normandy’s mission is.”
She snorted. “What mission?  They still have us hunting leftover geth.  We should be going after that ship—”
“That ship had us dead to rights.”  Nothing teasing now.  Entirely sober—he still had nightmares about how close a thing it had been.  “If Joker hadn’t prepped to accelerate when Grenado spotted that cruiser—”
“He could’ve just as easily killed us all, going superluminal that deep in a gravity well.”  But her heart wasn’t in it.  She’d seen the power recordings from that laser cannon that nearly crippled their ship, missing them by fractions of a second.  “I’m just saying, it’s still out there.  It’s making the back of my neck itch.”
“You and me both. I don’t like the thought of something hunting you.”

I can understand the bad meta from people who hate Kaidan, but seeing ice cold takes from people who love him never fails to disconcert me.

Listen
Five months into the war, that disquiet which had lurked at the bottom of Shepard’s heart from the first time Kaidan mentioned himself and Special Tactics in the same breath burst forth, some kind of ugly atavistic dread made manifest, right there in Starboard Observation.
It was a small thing.  A lifetime of survival owed to hyper-acute awareness had engendered substantial mistrust of small things, bacterial events foreshadowing a catastrophic outbreak.  This phage came in the form of a colonial reaper invasion deep in the Traverse.  A case of indoctrination leading to horrific abuses, shocking even to her sensibilities.  There was a young family.  There was an incident and an injury and Kaidan’s arm in a sling as they accelerated out of the system, to the next battlefront, smarting from defeat.
They were already gone, she insisted, knowing how little that meant.
I could have saved them, he replied, knowing how little it mattered to those who were dead.
She’d killed them. It was personal now.
And he raved, just the two of them in that lounge, not at her, not really, but at the reapers, at their impotence, at the damn universe for being so cold.  Swearing oaths to never let it happen again.  To be faster, smarter, better next time. Vowing a justice both of them damn well knew was unavailable.
Shepard never prayed before.  Prayer requires a certain ability to acknowledge helplessness, and helplessness is a form of giving up, and nobody ever showed her how to give up.  It wasn't a feature of Hannah Shepard's equation, calm and discipline yielding predictability, or Paul Shepard's application of scrap metal and elbow grease to fix any problem.  Failure was not to be found in the ICT vocabulary nor was disappointment an emotion available under the mentorship of David Anderson.
But she prayed now, listening to that unprecedented rage bleed out of Kaidan’s humanity and calcify into something else, unrecognizable except in all the horrible places where it was.  The Kaidans that might have been, if Kaidan were harder, meaner, lacking in empathy and incurious.  A Kaidan turned against the world by that same treasured sense of injustice, rather than turned into it.
And into that rage, in the privacy of her own mind, the silence of her own body, Shepard said: Please.
This man would throw himself under the wheels of a Mako to bring back that little girl.  He would give his last breath to someone who seemed to need it more.  He joined the military, the motherfucking marines, to save the galaxy.  To help people.  And you, universe—you went and made him a spectre and you put this good man into a reaper invasion and you showed him every ugly unsalvageable thing intelligent life can invent, like he could bear it without breaking.
This life has destroyed me.  Please, let it be kinder to him.  There are many like me, in ruins, jaded, broken down as far as broken gets.  Give that to us.  We can take it.  We can address it.  Not fix it—nobody can fix it, and that’s the whole problem, can’t you see?  He’ll keep trying and trying until every bone is broken and every last ounce of that good faith is burnt to ash.  Is that what you want?  Another husk roaming the colonies with a gun and a drudging duty?  We’re a dime a dozen.
But he’s special.  He’s a lighthouse.  If that light goes out, I’m lost.
So please.  I can’t save you, universe, and I can’t save me, but between the both of us—let’s save him.  Let him survive.
It’s all the hope I have left.

Pacing
I’m going to talk about good pacing.  Readers have often complimented me on my pacing, which I consider some of the highest praise I’ve received, because my best-known works tend to run quite long, and that presents a lot of challenges in this area.  So here’s what I’ve learned over my years of writing:
1. Something interesting must happen every single scene.  This doesn’t mean dramatic, or emphatically significant, or energetic.  It means interesting.  A bit of writing advice I see thrown around a lot states that every scene must advance either the character or the plot, and this isn’t a bad way of thinking about it if you have difficulty discerning what is interesting (and as long as in speculative fiction you remember to count the setting itself as a character for these purposes).  But what it really boils down to is every scene needs to engage the reader in such a way that they’re interested in learning more--whether that’s what happens next, a juicy bit of worldbuilding, or an intriguing character facet.  Make it good and leave the reader just a little shy of satisfied, all the time.
(And it should go without saying that the interesting bit can’t be totally desultory; you need every scene to be related in some way to what’s happening in your story and your plot as well.)
2. Emotional tone matters just as much as interest.  The stories I write are often fairly grim, full dark emotions and situations, fraught relationships, and the like.  But if all you ever give your reader is the same buffet, whether that’s fluffy light emotions, or closer to my end of the spectrum, they become fatigued and inured to the interest you’re attempting to create through these emotions.  It’s like eating pizza every night.  Even if you love pizza, at some point it becomes boring and a complete chore to keep eating it (or keep reading, in this analogy).  You need to vary your highs and lows.  You need to have unexpected twists of gloom or levity to contrast with your larger themes.  This, by the way, tends to mimic life, which is why it’s compelling.
3. Likewise, you need to balance action and inaction.  As a very basic formula, try to follow scenes or chapters where a great deal of action (considerable plot advancement, or even literal action like a battle) with scenes that are more reflective and cerebral.  Give your readers breathing room.  This doesn’t destroy tension; it relieves it just enough to get your readers ready for the next dose.
4. Good pacing and good tension are co-dependent.  The word tension tends to conjure an emotive definition in most people, but I prefer to think of it the way we do in knitting: the tension of the yarn must be maintained to ensure each stitch is alike, and each row is the same length and even with the rest of the fabric.  Tension is what gives your story consistency and draws the reader along from start to conclusion.  Instead of increasing and relaxing tension to vary the story emotions, keep tension constant and add more stitches (more stuff going on) when you want the story to feel more intense.  This prevents the story from dragging in its “relaxed” or more contemplative phases.  You always want the reader to feel there is more to discover, more to explore, right up until the satisfying ending--and even then, ideally, you want them a little wistful they couldn’t spend more time here.

Writing Resources
Here is a list of writing resources I’ve found useful, in no particular order:
Words, Descriptions, Writing Help
Power Thesaurus: The BEST resource for “tip of the tongue” syndrome
OneLook Reverse Dictionary
Writerology: This site is trying to sell you stuff. But there are also a ton of great articles in their free blog
Descriptionary: Help describing emotions and other things
Grammarly: Don’t take it too seriously and remember you’re the final arbiter of your own writing voice, but it can help you see things you won’t on your own
Hemingway: Similarly to Grammarly, will help with clarity and cadence, as long as you don’t take its suggestions as marching orders. Available online or as a downloadable desktop app.
Worldbuilding
Vulgar: Conlanging tool.  Free and paid versions, the free is still very useful, but I have the paid version and have definitely gotten my money’s worth from it (but I like conlanging).  Learning curve is a little steep.
Inkarnate: Mapmaking tool. Again, free and paid versions are both solid.
A World-Building Checklist: VERY comprehensive
Fantasy Globe: Create a virtual globe of your fantasy world
Name Generators
Fantasy Name Generators: The gold standard
Donjon Generators: Generators for names (including from your own list of names), as well as a lot of other things, like maps, calendars, inns, towns, even whole worlds.
Fake Name Generator: Generates demographic info, fake addresses and phone numbers, height/weight, etc. along with names
Not Another Tavern Generator: Generates bars complete with bartenders and general atmosphere, primarily for fantasy settings
Miscellaneous
Unsplash: Free images with blanket permissions for personal use. Great for covers/headers.
NASA Image and Video Library
Compare the Heights of Your Chars
Writing With Color: Words for Skin Tone: How to describe POC with sensitivity and artistry
Describing characters of color in writing: First of NK Jemisin’s excellent three-part series on this topic, with real examples from various works

hiiiiiiiiiiiii!!! that’s okay, don’t worry, hope you had a wonderful rest 😌
yes, we do match a lot. i really like talking with you because i feel so energetic to just yap and yap and yap. some things happened last night and this morning regarding a mutual i have-used to have and now i’m not in the mood to keep interacting with people. except, obviously, you. i don’t know, some people in here are so…weird. it got me really sad, i almost decided to deactivate, but said fuck them, i’m not in here for people i’m here to post my silly little thoughts about not so little silly men.
sorry for they small personal rant!
ON GOD, my pc is an old fella, and i mainly used the guy for playing the sims. his name is harold, by the way. he did very well on the first month, but boy was getting feed too much CC so he told me to fuck myself and stopped working, what a cunt. i had a beautiful sapphic couple, and one of them got pregnant on accident and i got sad because it’s so boring to have babies and they are so ugly?
nowadays i only watch one streamer and he is from my country, which on any other circumstance i would tell you, but i’m afraid i’m the only person from my country that writes in here for jjk. at least that i know of.
THATS THE REASON I HAVENT YET DOWNLOADED IT 😭 i use my tablet for designing and studying so it would fuck me up real good, and it’s samsung so it glitches so much it pisses me off so bad.
i think you will find out. you see, i really like sending anons to people, but you are the first one i’m consistently sending to the point of having a name (which, btw, i melted with my name on your anons, it’s so cute!!). going back on track, whenever i send i try to make sure it doesn’t look like it’s the real me, but with you i do. as i said, i like talking with you, i feel comfortable, so i just let me be me.
jason is smelly af, just like brahms, you know? but toji jason would smell of that mainly sweat, woods, pines, any type of shit that would probably make me not run away that fast. i don’t have that much of a survival instinct, and if the killer is a almost two meters male i am going nowhere.
wait, ☝️ nutty 🥺 cute.
I THINK YOU SHOULD DO IT, i love crack fics, i love your fics and loser or virgin satoru (both) is so kcjdkdndkekd got me biting my toes off. pls do, like seriously, i think it would be so cool and fresh. also, the name was perfection. satoru really fixes perfectly in the bimbo box, with the b of bitch. one time i described him as if michael scott and mean girls mom had a white haired baby, and i don’t think i’ll ever come across this type of enlightenment again.
OH, QUEEN IS EVERYTHING. i remember how me, being a younger little shit, would hate everything my older sibling liked, and queen got attacked by me. in my defense, whenever they like some band/musician, they listened to it everyday. first it was fun, then panic at the disco, then queen and now elton john. but soon as they skipped to the next fixation, i became obsessed with their oldest one. also, this boy in high school thought he was the shit because he saw the movie and knew the songs, so i was in the chapel (christian school) with him and finished the lyrics to bohemian rhapsody and he goes “omg, you know queen?” BOY I WAS BORN AND MY PARENTS WERE BLASTING IT ON THE ROOM NEXT DOOR, TF. EVERYONE KNOWS QUEEN.
born to die is my ride or die, my favorite from it is this is what makes us girls because it reminds me of my teenage years, but my favorite of them all is young and beautiful, i am obsessed with the great gatsby and my brain chemicals have never survived the scene about daisy and gatsby past.
sabrina seriously is feeding my writing ideas with this new album. bed chem with gojo, juno with nanami, oh…fucking hell. we really are the same person, i love it !!!
i am petrified of tsunamis. they are impossible to happen in my country, but i still have nightmares regarding them and waking up all frightened. once i had one where people went up to the mountains and still it wasn’t enough.
oh… hm, well, i want to say something but i can’t yet. brasil is beautiful, i get it. my dream place to go is anywhere that i can see northern lights. fuck, like, i don’t know how to explain but just the thought of having the chance to stare into the sky and seeing those lights that look like magic makes me want to cry. another country would be chile, in the desert you can see the milky way 🥺 i’m a big astronomy nerd, so that’s just enough to make me happy. you will never catch me saying this on main, but i would enjoy going to the usa so i could eat their high in calories and unnecessary food. there is something about it that grosses me out but also makes me go hmmm.
question for today is what was your first work posted here and what’s your favorite season?
nutty anon.
NUUTTTTY BAE

THANKYOUU 🤒🤒. omg maybe i’ll do it, i love writing silly shit every once in a while bc why not 💔💔💔. that is such a unique compasrasion to satoru i love it
LOVEEEEE QUEEN. i gen wish i was bored in the 80s or even the 70s. the style always has me gagged like ???? i love how a lot of old vintage styles are coming back also. so real 😭. i grew up around a low of heavy metal / rock & indie. ooh i haven’t listened to patd in a min, elton johnnn ugh i still haven’t seen rocketman. SPEAKING OF did u see bohrap? apparently ppl have mixed opinions on it / rami’s portrayal of freddie but i rly liked it 🧎‍♀️
so true i wanna see the northern lights badly. i also wanna visit scotland for some reason? chileeeee that seems like that would be so fun to visit also !!!!! ur an astronomy nerd that’s so cute 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️. The Garden Thief (M)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jungkook x Reader Word Count: 9.3K Genre: Hybrid AU, romance/drama/comedy, enemies to lovers Warnings: Unprotected sex, oral sex (fem. rec.), they get down and dirty outside but no one else is there to see them, cum play? (just a little), there’s also a bit of mud (sorry, but also not sorry, they’re outside what do you want from me?!?!), referenced hybrid neglect and oppression (hybrids are wrongfully deemed as pets by law and the majority of society).
Summary: Your beloved vegetable patch has once again been victimized by a hungry thief in the night. The prime suspect? Jeon Jungkook, your neighbour's rabbit hybrid. But when you finally confront him, he pleads innocent, and proposes a plan to clear his name.
A/N: I wrote this fic’s premise and opening scene for the ‘A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Game’ that I played oh so long ago and now I’ve finally finished the tale!
...
“Oh for fuck’s sake, not again!” You swear upon seeing the leafy green remains of several carrots lying in your garden, inches from where they used to be buried. This maddening mystery of the vanishing vegetables has been playing out all summer. You’ve set out deterrents for every possible garden pest, rolling out chicken wire and spraying natural remedies to repel anything from bugs to small rodents. Yet you still wake to find that your garden has been robbed in the night. The only possible suspect you haven’t been able to protect against resides just next door, in fact—
You squint up at the boarded fence, spotting a pair of long dark ears peeking out over the posts. “Jungkook, is that you?”
The ears immediately disappear, ducking down behind the barrier. The sound of his hurried footsteps trailing away are followed only by the slamming of a door.
You rush into and through your own house carrying the wilted carrot greens. Exiting out the front, and over to the house next to yours, where you repeatedly press the bell.
The entry whips open on the fourth ring to reveal Jungkook. His face is flushed, beads of sweat racing down his brow, and a shirt that one would normally use to cover their chest, is instead thrown over his shoulder. “Something wrong neighbour?” He asks with a carrot stick in hand. Bringing it to his mouth, he taunts you with a bite and crooked grin.
“Is-is your caretaker home?” You stutter trying your best to swallow your nerves. Concentrating hard on his face, you plead with your eyes not to wander down. That’s exactly what he wants, a reason to put you off your mission, to make you so flustered that you have to walk away. He’s always trying to use his allure against you, and you hate how often he succeeds doing just that...
“No, he’s at work.”
“When will he be back?”
“Not sure, maybe a week, or two? He’s on a business trip.”
Your gaze falters in it’s determination for a brief second as a drop of sweat descends from his neck to his chest. Holding your breath you watch it’s path, tracing the valleys between his muscles. When Jungkook finally wipes it away your brain catches up and scolds you for your weakness. “And he left you here, alone?”  You ask, while trying to recollect your dignity, reminding yourself of how much grief he has put you through.
“Of course.” Jungkook’s smile grows. “I’m not just some common pet. I know how to behave myself.”
The statement makes your brow twitch, enraging you enough to overcome his tactics. “I know you haven’t been here long, but you should know, people typically don’t like it when someone steals from their yard.” You lecture him, waving the carrot tops in front of his face. “So stop treating my garden like your own personal snack bar!”
“Now why would I take from you? I have plenty of food here, even got another delivery this morning.”  The hybrid kicks at a box next him filled with a vibrant collection of fresh produce and grains.
“I don’t know why. I just know it was you.”
“Prove it.” He prods, while taking the last bite of the vegetable from his hand.
The loud crunching gnaws on your composure, stripping you of any patience you may have had for the hybrid. “This all started when you moved in, and I’ve ruled everything else out!” You shout, but as good as it might feel to finally vent your anger, you feel as though you’re somehow playing into his hand.
“That doesn’t seem like very good evidence. It’s circumstantial at best. If you want to find out who the real culprit is you should have a stake out.”
“A stake out?”
“Yeah, you know, watch over the garden for the night, catch the criminal in the act. I could even help if you’d like.”
You scoff at the ridiculous notion. “You really think I should invite you over to guard my crops?”
“I do, so I’ll come over tonight? Say around seven?” You open your mouth to object, but the rabbit hybrid jumps from one statement to the next casually inviting himself into your own home. “Perfect. See you then.”
“I didn’t-no wait, that was sar-” The door closes between you before you can finish. Leaving you baffled and alone on the doorstep. You ready to knock but stop just before your knuckles hit the wood. Trying again right now is a lost cause, it’ll just play into his game. So why waste your breath when you know it’ll just end the same way? Tonight then, as he suggested, that’s when you’ll be ready to hit him with some hard evidence that he won’t be able to refute.
Admitting defeat for now, you retreat back to your garden to pick the surviving vegetables and contemplate the encounter. You wish your could have just spoken to Jungkook’s caretaker—fuck what was his name again? You’ve only seen the man a couple times since they took the house, but at least he doesn't give you a nervous knot in your stomach, or leave you confused and speechless like his hybrid does.
It’s been three months since they moved in. You were excited at first, to have new neighbours in your almost vacant cul-de-sac. Buyers don’t seem to be interested in the old houses with large lots in your area. Too much work to maintain, and not enough good job prospects to go around. So when you saw the sold sign go up you were beyond thrilled. Greeting the new residents with a fruit basket and a smile.
The rabbit hybrid you now know as Jungkook appeared rather shy at first, you did your best to welcome him. Always greeting him when he was outside, trying to engage him in small chat, but the first time you caught him during his workout everything changed. Until that point you had not considered him as anything but a prospective friend. You were stunned to see him in such a confident state, throwing around his weights like they were nothing. In that moment, with you too nervous to admit that you found him attractive, you became the anxious and blubbering fool in his presence, and he, unfortunately, took note. The once quiet and cute rabbit, became a flirtatious and bratty bunny.
And since then, whenever you would work in your garden he’d be on the other side of the fence grunting and panting. Staying close to the gap in the divider, a missing panel you had yet to replace. On days like today you would often look up from your radishes and accidentally lock eyes with the hybrid, drenched in sweat and showing off his skills.
Out of respect and self preservation you tried your best to not to pay attention, to keep your nose buried in your garden, but as the weeks went by the vegetables under your care started to disappear. The ample crops you tended to in the evening, lessened by morning, with only the refuse remaining to indicate it’s former presence. You didn’t want to point fingers immediately, but today was the final straw, and tonight no matter how hard he tries to distract you, you will find him guilty.
After harvesting the choice crops for the day and watering the rest. You dust yourself off, settling inside and in front of your computer; opening the visitors page for your place of work, the city's greenhouse conservatory. To help promote the centre in the community the staff all take turns writing articles revolving around their own projects or home gardens, and you’re up next in the rotation. You stare at the blank document for several minutes trying your best to concentrate on the task, but you are unable to think of anything other than the mischievous hybrid next door.
Embracing the topic of your aggravation, you start the post off with a title sure to catch the eye of any reader, ‘Garden Thieves.’
‘We’ve all been there, finding a tomato just about to reach its peak ripeness. We give it another day to grow into perfection, only to find it missing later on. In your absence something else has taken it into its own clutches. I myself have been dealing with a vegetable thief for several weeks, so if you are struggling like I am, here are a few things that might help. ’
You proceed to outline several garden pests uploading photos of their damage, along with quick remedies to deter their presence. Netting to block the sparrows, raised beds and fences to keep out most rodents or mammals, and a caffeine solution to stave off slugs.
‘I hope this may help you all in your efforts to keep your plants safe, but I must add a disclaimer. Unfortunately nothing here is completely foolproof. Even if you do follow all of these steps you still might lose some of your crops to a crafty critter. But I wish you the best of luck on all of your backyard battles. I myself plan to face off with my own long-eared menace tonight.’
You finish your post with a smile. Sending it off to your coworker Namjoon to get his approval before you make it public.
He calls a few minutes later, his laughter carrying through the speaker. “That was easily the best article you’ve written all year. You should definitely post it.”
“Thanks.” You chuckle, hitting the submit button. At the very least feeling a bit relieved to have one less task weighing on your mind. “I really appreciate it.”
“No problem. I take it you’re still having trouble with that hybrid neighbour of yours?”
“Yeah,” you groan. You’ve complained to Namjoon about the issue several times in the past month. It must have been all too easy for him to read between the lines and see what set you off to create this specific entry.  “But he refuses to admit it was him. It’s like he’s trying to make me question my skills as a gardener and I hate it! I went over to talk to his caretaker but he’s away on business for a couple weeks.”
“He left him alone for that long? What about food?”
“He’s been getting deliveries. By the looks of it, he has a healthier diet than I do.”
Namjoon pauses on the line giving you only a simple, “Huh...” in a long break.
“What?”
“Well it’s just-” A loud buzzing sound erupts through the phone line cutting off his answer. A noise you know to indicate someone is at the back door. “That’s weird. I didn’t think we were supposed to get anything delivered today. No one else is here.... did you have anything scheduled to come in?”
“No.” You double check the calendar sitting on your desk. “I shouldn’t have anything until next Monday.”
Namjoon puts you on hold while he checks on the reason for the interruption, returning only a minute later. “It’s a delivery all right, but are you sure these aren’t yours? I’m seeing a lot of tropical species on the invoice. Combretum rotundifolium, Heliconia angusta, Myrciaria dubia-”
You mouth a swear as Namjoon carries on with his list. It’s obvious they are indeed the specimens of your expected batch. You're in the process of redesigning one of the tropical habitats. The lead director was adamant that the conservatory host a butterfly exhibition in the next coming year, and in order to support the grandiose endeavour you are required to introduce a vast amount of new flowering species over the next few months. “How many in total?”
“About two dozen. Looking pretty rough from the journey too.”
You’re not surprised by their current state. This summer is already one of the hottest and driest on record, and all the stock you had received this season was excessively wilted and near death because of it. “Do we have any holding houses with humidifiers available?”
“Not at the moment,” There’s a clatter in the background as Namjoon sorts through what must be the slack of clipboards. “But I’ve got the inspection chart here and your last delivery did just finish it’s quarantine. No signs of pests or illness, so they’re clear to plant. That should free up some space for you.”
“That’ll have to do. Thanks for checking.” Standing up from your desk with a sorrowful sigh. You mourn the loss or your afternoon off as you start to dress for a day of hard labour. Throwing on your work-issued overalls over your t-shirt and shorts. Unfortunately you can’t just leave the new stock to sit out under the beating sun. With little humidity outside and no protection they’ll be burnt to a crisp if you delay too long. But the worst part is that your planting staff isn’t scheduled until later in the week, and that volume of work will put you well into the middle of the night before you complete it. “I’ll be in soon to deal with it.”
“That’s a lot of planting to do on your own. I can help if you-”
“I can’t take you away from your trees, isn’t there a bonsai exhibition next week you have to prepare them for?” He’s been agonizing over this showcase for so long you couldn’t possibly inconvenience him now with your own troubles. “It’s fine, really. I’ll call to see if anyone else is willing to come in today.” You hang up letting Namjoon return to his tasks, and work your way down the contacts for the gardening staff as you prepare yourself to leave. Though as expected, all of those who answer have prior commitments and won’t be able to assist.
Grabbing your badge and plans for the updates to the garden you slip back out into the noon-day sun, so strong it’s turned your car into an oven on wheels. You’re just about to pull it into reverse when you spot the blinds shift in your neighbour’s window. Prompting you to recall the plans he had made for tonight.
With all the work you have, it’s doubtful you’ll be back home for seven. You return to Jungkook’s door to give him the news. He has it open before you can even knock, his usual smirk crawling across his face as he greets you.
“About tonight... something has come up at work and I really don’t know how late I’ll be.”
His ears perk up. “You’re going into the conservatory?”
“Yeah,” you respond, somewhat shocked that he remembered where you work. It’s been a couple months since you mentioned it while introducing yourself to him and his caretaker. “An order came in earlier than expected. I’ll likely be planting all day and night.”
“I can help,” he offers, already stepping out to join you, and locking the door behind him.
“You want to help?”
“Of course, isn’t that the neighbourly thing to do?”
“Yes, but I wouldn’t want it or expect it from someone who terrorizes my own garden.”
“Allegedly,” Jungkook corrects. “And wouldn’t you rather have me with you, under your supervision, than here, all alone with only a measly fence between me and your impressive bell pepper harvest?”
“Stay away from my peppers!” You scold, pointing your finger at him. “Even if I wanted to take you, what about your caretaker? Don’t you need his permission to leave and work?”
“He’s never paid attention to my whereabouts before, and it’s not work if you don’t pay me. I’ll just be a volunteer. You have people volunteer all the time right?”
“Yes but-”
“I’ll be on my best behaviour.”
“Alright, fine.” You finally agree though with a heavy dose of reluctance. Namjoon often brings his own hybrid in so it shouldn’t be a problem. “But if I see you nibble on even a single leaf, you’re coming straight back here.”
“Deal.” He rushes past you straight to your passenger seat and buckles himself in. Practically bouncing with excitement beside you as you pull out and head towards the conservatory.
The minutes pass and you try your best to focus on the road but you’ve never been so close to Jungkook in such a small space. And with his built frame taking up most of the car, he’s hard for you to ignore. His ears folded against the roof and his shoulders so wide they brush repeatedly against yours.
“Ever been to the conservatory before?” You ask, trying to divert your mind from the battle which builds inside you. A wavering war between frustration and attraction, with the former trying it’s best to pin down the latter, a move which only arouses the latter more...
“No, I’ve wanted to go ever since you mentioned it but my caretaker hasn’t had the time.”
“Oh.” A sense of pity joins the ranks of your emotions, nudging at you as you pull into the lot. “Sorry, I didn’t-”
“Why are you sorry?” Jungkook asks in a low whisper, snapping back to his flirtatious behaviours. His mouth turns up at the corner as he leans into you, so close that his drooping ears graze the top of your head.  “Would you have taken me earlier if I had mentioned it?”
“N-no,” you choke out. Placing your hand on his solid chest, you push him back and away. As tempting as his advance might be to accept, you know his forwardness to be nothing more than an act to make a fool of you. Why else would he try to both seduce you, and steal from right under your nose?  “You’re only here today because I am in desperate need of help, and I can’t trust you to be alone.”
...
You lead him through the unoccupied greenhouses. The conservation is closed to the public today (as it is every Monday and Tuesday); which usually allows for some time off, but at least now it’ll give you a chance to work unimpeded by visitors. Your own curated section is located in the most humid of all the houses, set in such a way to mimic the tropical environment you are attempting to represent.
The first stop is the holding house where the carts of new stock wait just outside.  Grabbing an empty trolly you enter and start to load up those that are ready to plant. Jungkook following your actions does the same, easily lifting the heavy planters that you yourself struggle with. “Thanks,” you whisper as he relieves you of a particularly burdensome tree. To which he smiles in return.
After making the switch, by placing the recent delivery in the house for it’s quarantine, you lead him to the supply closet. Where you collect a couple shovels, trowels, and two pairs of gloves. As you continue to scan for anything else you might require, Jungkook pops in behind looking at the shelves with a sense of curiosity. He reaches up and over you to a spray bottle labeled ‘slug repellent.’
“We won’t need that, it’s for the outdoor gardens,” You explain. “It’s just a mixture of ca-”
“Caffeine and water?”
You snap your gaze to him. “How do you know that?”
He bites his lip as a snicker starts to escape. “Just a bit of morning reading. I found an interesting article with that particular tidbit. One which also happened to reference the exploits of a long-eared menace.”
“Y-you read the conservatory blog? You read my post? No one reads that, there can’t have been more than ten views!”
“Which is such a shame.” He goads you. “I’ve found your work to be both informative and comical. You really have me rooting for you in your quest to catch your thief.”
You groan in utter fury. “Why must you be so-so-”
“Handsome? Funny? Caring?”
“Antagonizing!”
“Because you seem to take more notice when I am.” Jungkook answers, with a turn of his heel, his tail poking out from under his shirt as he starts to walk away with the cart. “And I like seeing that perplexed look of yours. Your nose is cute when you scrunch it up like that.”
You remain in the shed, your traitorous heart beating erratically over the fact that he called a part of you cute. While your more sensible side grabs your nose and smooths out the wrinkles he referenced.
“Should we get to work?” He calls out after you. “The sooner we finish, the sooner we can go home and expose that bandit of yours.”
You roll your eyes and follow him out, before taking the lead to your tropical glasshouse. The air sticks to your skin the moment you enter. Jungkook lets out a long exhale behind you tugging on the collar of his shirt. “Is it always like this in here?”
“It’s a bit warmer today, but not by much. Are you already regretting your decision to help?” You tease him.
“Nope,” he answers, slinging a shovel over his shoulder. “Show me where to dig, and I’ll get to it.”
Pulling out your plans for the new exhibit arrangement, you select a couple species placing them on the empty plots of garden as directed, careful to allow for future growth. Jungkook follows behind digging out their new homes faster than at least three of your staff members combined.
You stare at him for a second, unable to believe the pace at which he’s going. “Something wrong?” He asks, pausing to lock eyes with you.
“No, I just didn’t think you’d be so quick at digging.”
“I’m part rabbit, what did you expect?” Jungkook boasts with a chuckle and a raised brow. “I share their strengths. Especially when it comes to burrowing and fu-”
His words are cut short when a fresh breeze from the outside washes over the both of you, a  sure sign that someone must have entered the greenhouse. Your neighbour goes rigid, his nose lifts into the air and his ears fall back flat against his head. “Jungkook what’s-” Leaping up he closes the gap and grabs you. Tucking you into him with his chin resting on your head, where a  warm and earthy scent envelopes you.  His breaths are quick and deep, causing his chest to rapidly rise and fall against your back.
Namjoon’s voice calls out to you. “... are you in here?”
“Over here!” You yell out in reply, before turning back to the hybrid who still has you locked in his clutches. “What the hell Jungkook? Let me go! Now’s not the time for your games.” Sure it might feel nice to be wrapped in his arms, to get lost amidst his aroma. At any other time you might even consider taking a moment before chastising his boldness. But here? Now? And with Namjoon coming to greet you? No, this is too much.
You try to push him away like you have before, but this time it’s as if he’s set in stone, and not registering you at all. He focuses only on the direction your coworker's voice hailed from. “That scent, he smells like-”
“There you are.” Namjoon interrupts stepping around a flowering bush and into view, looking surprised by your guest. “Oh, hello there.”
The point of Jungkook's chin rubs against your head as he grips you even tighter. Embarrassed and confused by the hybrids embrace. “Jungkook, this is Namjoon.” You introduce your coworker while delivering an elbow to Jungkook’s gut. He finally snaps out of his trace and lets you go though he continues to hover behind. “He works with the bonsai of the conservatory.”
“You must be the neighbour I’ve heard so much about, it’s nice to finally meet you.” Namjoon extends his hand to the hybrid, but Jungkook ignores the gesture, choosing to glare instead, with his nostrils flared and his ears pinned back.
“Jungkook?” You whisper trying to chase him from his mood.
Namjoon gives him a nervous smile. “You probably smell my hybrid, on me don’t you?”
“A hybrid?” Jungkook confirms, his eyes narrowed at Namjoon.
“Yeah, sorry, I didn’t intend to scare you. I’m sure the scent of a predator, especially a tiger, is a bit of a shock. He’s harmless, I promise.”
“Is Taehyung here?” You ask, hoping to see his affectionate part-feline companion.
“Nah, he’s with a friend today. I needed to get some work done and he’d be more of a distraction than a help... but it would seem that didn’t stop him from scenting my shirt before I left.” Namjoon explains, and then turns to your neighbour again. “Jungkook would you mind if I borrow her for a second? I need help with one of my tropical species.”
Jungkook gives a solemn nod. For the first time since you’ve known him, he looks frightened, and somewhat hesitant to release you over to your coworker.
Worried by his current disposition, you reassure him with a squeeze on his arm. “Just keep digging where I’ve placed those pots and I’ll be right back.”
Namjoon leads you into the adjacent greenhouse where you can continue to keep watch of Jungkook through the pains of glass. But the instant the doors close between you, Namjoon starts bombarding you with questions. “Why didn’t you tell me? How long has it been going on? ”
You take a step back having been caught off guard. “Tell you what?”
“About you and Jungkook! Is the feuding neighbours just a cover story?” Namjoon’s eyes are wide and hopeful as he carries on, not letting you fit a single word in. “Don’t worry, I won’t inform anyone you're together. I know it’s not easy having a human-hybrid relationship out in the open. But I think you should be careful about going out into public because he’s far too obvious about it.”
“We’re not- we’re not a couple. Why would you think such a thing?”
“Because the way held you, he looked like he was marking you with his own scent. That’s what rabbits do isn’t it? They rub their chins on what they want to claim as their own.”
“They do what?” You ask, stunned by the possibility, before the realism settles back in. It must just be Jungkook’s idea of a joke. “No, that’s not what he’s doing, our connection is nothing remotely like that. Don’t get me wrong he’s very attractive, and he knows it.” You mutter the last part under your breath. “But-”
“But you really are having trouble with him. It's not a cover?”
“You think I would keep something like that from you?” Namjoon over the years has come to be your closest confidant. A good friend and coworker, you would never dream of hiding something like that from him.
“I suppose not.”
“Is that why you brought me back here, to question my relationship status?”
“Not entirely.” Namjoon shakes his head with a small dimpled smile and changes the subject. “I do actually want to get your help with one of my new acquisitions.” He points out an unusual tree on his work bench, much too big for the pot it’s currently situated in. It’s extensive roots spill out over the top and threaten to swallow the pot whole. “A Ficus microcarpa, far from the most sought after species when it comes to reputable bonsai, but I couldn’t pass this one up. It has such good character.”
“What made it grow in such a way?” You examine the plant and it’s container with care, prying between the roots and taking note of cracks starting to form in the terracotta.
“The last owner neglected it for far too long. It sat hidden in the back of a commercial greenhouse, still under the watering and fertilizing system, but since it was confined to such a small space it tried to root it’s way out. If I were to guess, it probably hasn’t seen a new pot for at least five years.”
“It’s a miracle it survived.” You nod impressed by the tree’s determination. “What’s your plan for it?”
“Give it what it wants, let it leach out. I doubt I would be able to pry it out entirely without causing significant damage to the roots that are gripping the sides, so instead I want to put another bellow to catch it and give it the fresh soil and room it needs.” Namjoon lays the tree and pot down on the table, and asks you to hold and support the trunk, while he taps and pokes at the bottom of the vessel with a metal trowel.  Enlarging the cracks, but not breaking the pot fully. It’s a tedious process. The small chunks of clay are removed piece by piece, giving him access to see and free some of the tightly bound roots inside.
While your coworker continues his task, your eyes are free to wonder. You check on Jungkook through the glass, as he kneels in front of the garden bed digging even faster than before.
Namjoon appears to notice your distracted state. “How's he doing?”
“Fine I guess.” You whisper. “He’s acting stranger than usual today though. He stole from my garden again. Invited himself over to my house, then here, and you saw what he did back there.”
“Huh...” Namjoon mutters, trailing off the same way he did on the phone.
“What is this ‘huh’ you keep giving me? You know I don’t like games Namjoon. If you have something you want to say, say it.”
“It’s about what you said earlier, how his caretaker leaves for extended periods of time. Usually if an animal is alone for too long they look for ways to stimulate themselves and resort to their natural instincts, scavenging and such. But he’s a hybrid and therefore part human, so if you were isolated and restricted to your house what would you do?”
“Probably look for the closest person I could find. So he’s acting out in my garden and teasing me, because he’s lonely?”
“I think so.” Namjoon responds as he extracts another root, freeing it from its confines.
“But why?” You ask, worried for the answer to come. “Why wouldn’t he just say something?”
“There could be a number of reasons. He might not understand what he’s doing on a conscious level, or he might be afraid to show any sign of weakness to you or anyone else. Jungkook is part prey animal, and humans are all too often predators.”
“If that’s the case...” You curse yourself for not realizing it sooner. The fury you held for him slowly fades away as you replay every encounter in your mind. He was literally jumping at the chance to spend time with you, to help you with your work, and you were to blind to see it. Your anger over your missing vegetables is so trivial in comparison to what he must have been going through. The loneliness he must have felt, and the inability to admit it, you can’t imagine how he suffered through it alone. “What can I do to help him? I have no legal claim to him Namjoon. What can I do within such limitations?”
He looks down at his work in progress. “The way I see it  you and he, like this small tree, have three options. You could maintain the status quo, leave him be, but how long will he be able to survive like he is? Creeping over the edge but grasping on to nothingness?”
You shake your head vehemently rejecting the idea while Namjoon continues.
“You could report his caretaker for neglect, breaking the container entirely, but that too could be very damaging to him, tearing him away entirely could put him in a state of shock, and in a home that is no better for him, while the legal battle is decided. Or...” Namjoon grabs another container, slightly wider than the one in which the plant is seated. Filling it with substrate he takes the tree clinging to it’s partial pot and places it on top. Pressing the newly freed roots down into the soil.
“You could support him, give him a better home just outside of his own where he can be himself and access what he needs. I personally think it’s your safest option for now.” Namjoon leads over inspecting the bonsai and lowers his voice to an almost inaudible whisper. “Until the day, when it is possible to fully cast the pot aside.”
You nod, though now left to grapple with what you could possibly have to offer the hybrid.  “I’m not sure I would be the best person to care for him.”
“I think Jungkook would disagree. He was already trying to scent you. That to me, implies his desire for something more in the realm of an intimate relationship.” You choke on your breath as Namjoon comes to an additional conclusion. Upon seeing your distress he makes a suggestion. “Of course you could keep it strictly to friendship between the two of you and I’m sure that will improve his situation, but his other needs will need to be met for him to feel completely at home...”
“His other needs? You think he wants to be with me? Intimately?! No! Surely he would have acted differently if that was his intent! He’s done nothing but tease me when he catches me even remotely looking in his direction.”
“So you have been looking at him!” Namjoon taunts you with a massive grin. Apologizing a second later when you proceed to glare at him. “But to answer your question, no, not necessarily. You have to remember most of society deems him a lesser being. He could be feeling a lot of guilt and pressure not to engage with you in that way. Though he might not outright say it, I bet his instincts will continue to shine through. I’ll even prove it to you.” Namjoon takes off a glove and rubs your head. “I bet this rabbit of yours will take less than a minute before he tries to replace the smell of my hand with his own again... trust me.”
You shake your head in disbelief. “I should probably get back to him.” You are just about to step away when your thoughts return to the long neglected plant. “Where do you plan to house that when you’re finished? Ficuses naturally belong in a more tropical location don’t they?”
“They do, especially if I want to give it a better chance. It’s going to need a place far more humid than this space.”
“Was this all your calculated way of guilting me to store it in my greenhouse too?”
“The thought might have crossed my mind.” Namjoon gives you a sly grin.  “But my logic is still sound in regards to Jungkook. He needs someone, he needs a better home... and it would seem he’s chosen you.”
...
You wander back to your greenhouse, still full of doubt. Finding Jungkook to have finished most of the required digging.
“Sorry for leaving you.”
“You-you okay?” He asks, upon seeing the dazed look on your face and then scowling in the direction that Namjoon led you.
“Fine, he just needed help with one of his plants. Sorry about earlier, I didn’t think you’d be affected by the scent of his hybrid, Taehyung is rather sweet though, you’d like him.”
“You trust him then?” Jungkook grumbles as he pierces his shovel into the ground. “You trust Namjoon and his hybrid?”
“Of course, why shouldn’t I?”
“Because it wasn’t just a tiger that I smelled. He’s been around a lot of hybrids. Every scent on him told me to run, all of them put there by dangerous predators.”
“Oh,” you shoot back in surprise. “I’m sure it’s nothing. Taehyung is rather popular, he has a lot of friends and Namjoon often caters them at his place. You don’t need to worry, you're safe here.”
“It’s not myself I’m worried about.”
Jungkook inches closer as you crouch to place the plants in the holes he dug. His nose twitches as he takes a deep breath, his eyes watching while you bury the root ball in the warm soil, firmly securing the trunk of the young tree.
While you are leaning down, Jungkook reaches across to the other side of you. Grabbing the trowel to your right despite the fact that the same tool can be found on his left. The bottom of his chin grazes the top of your head and lingers for a spell. Your heart stops in that moment while questioning his motives. Though Namjoon said he’d do just this, you still can’t be entirely sure that it proves him correct; Jungkook might just not have seen the other option available to him, and he’s never bothered about invading your space. This could be nothing, though there’s a small growing part of you that wants it more and more to be something.
“He’s a good guy,” you promise, returning to the conversation so as to not dwell on his actions. “He even suggested that I should bring you along more often, if you’re interested in spending some of your days here.”
“He did?”
You nod.  A small white lie, but not entirely incorrect, and if it gets him to accept Namjoon easier you’ll all be better for it. “I wouldn’t expect you to work, but you're more than welcome to just hang around. The staff here could always use some company and I’m sure it would beat staying at home alone all day.”
“I would like that. I would like that a lot, but would you want me to keep you company too?”
“If that’s what you want to do.”
“No, I need to know if that’s what you want.” He looks over to you pinning you down in his line of sight.
“I suppose I would....” You answer and turn your head, unable to bear the nerves that his gaze brings. The both of you fall quiet. Knowing what you know now, being free of your anger for him leaves you vulnerable, open to his persuasion, and now you are no longer certain of how to act. So you start to rely on what has made him comfortable in the past, and interject with a new condition to bring an end to the awkward silence. “As long as you treat this garden better than mine back home.”
Jungkook lets out a long laugh. “I have nothing but the highest respect for your garden.”
...
When planting is finished your clothes are entirely saturated in sweat and your muscles aching from use. It’s hard to believe how much you’ve both done in such a short amount of time. While carting up the supplies, Jungkook’s eyes catch on something behind you. You look around spotting the newly potted bonsai on a back table. Namjoon must have dropped it off while you both were busy.
Looking at it now you can’t help but notice how even the shape of its leaves remind you of the hybrid’s ears, long, pointed, and reaching up to the sky. You consider your friend's words one more time and while Jungkook leans over to inspect the tree. Reaching out to his back, your hand shakes with hesitation before setting down on a spot just below his shoulder. He softens under your touch, a low hum leaving his lips. His attention turns from the plant to you. With your hand still in place, your arm is now wrapped around him, leaving only an inch between the two of you. You stand there fixed and unmoving, but content in the knowledge, that you seem to have left him speechless this time. His eyes darting away from yours, to your lips, your neck, and finally the hand you place upon his chest.
Only to have the moment broken when you can hear and feel the rumble from his stomach. His nervous laugh follows as he reaches up to scratch behind his ear.
“Hungry?”
He nods in response, his eyes wide as he remains unusually silent.
“Come on, I’ll buy you dinner.” You offer as you turn him around to head to the car.
...
You both settle on a take out spot, and return home to wash up and eat.
After finishing your meal and tearing off your overalls, you both settle down on the hammock in your yard. With Jungkook’s legs long enough to touch the ground, he slowly rocks the seat back and forth.  He’s been near silent since that close moment together. He’s never had a problem with banter and flirtation, but now you’ve come to notice that any attention which can’t be passed off as a joke causes him to flounder.
Laying back in the hammock, both full and content, your eyes threaten to close after the long day as Jungkook continues to sit beside you. The sound of crickets lulling you to sleep. “Keep an eye out for that thief of mine will you?” You may not like games but if it makes him comfortable, and keeps him talking, you’ll continue to play this ruse with him.
“You trust me to keep watch without your supervision?”
“Are you suggesting I shouldn’t?”
“No, it’s just a lot more credit than you usually give me.”
“I think you’ve earned it.” You whisper as you finally drift off.
It feels like only a few minutes of rest before the sun sets and the air turns cool. Jungkook’s chin comes to rest on the top of your head like it did back in the greenhouse. He shifts his weight, burrowing his arms around and behind to cover you as he takes deep breaths. You lean into him seeking the warmth of his chest. No longer restricted by your childish anger to enjoy his company is a welcome relief, you only wish you could relinquish him of any of his own troubles and doubts.  And then, you feel it, a drop of cold rain hitting your neck. The hammock moves again as he adjusts, the back of his fingers running across the damp spot. Another finds your cheek and he wipes that away too, your skin shivering in response.
But when a speck lands your mouth he stops. You wait, a second, then two. Your anticipation grows with face heating up and your chest tightening as you continue to crave his touch. You want him to wipe it away, to touch you, to act on whatever desires he might be keeping. You part your lips with the desperate hope that he will take the hint. Rejoicing when the warm pad of his thumb spreads the drop across the delicate skin.
He comes down on to you, his mouth catching any and all remains of the droplet as he encases your lips. Jungkook places a hand on your neck while the other grabs the ropes of the hammock, his legs straddle your hips. The scattered rain turns to a downpour as he remains fixed to your mouth, even his form isn’t enough to shield you from the current washing down from the sky.
As your hands reach up to his own damp and curling locks entwining your fingers in the strands he moans and nips. But as quickly as it started, so too does it end. When Jungkook snaps up as though jolted from a dream. His ears point back as an apology flows from him. “I-I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“Jungkook,” you call out to him but he ignores you as he tries to detangle himself. When one foot hits the ground. You grab his waist and try again. “Jungkook, you don’t have to be sorry.” But instead of stopping he merely pulls you off and along with him, sending you both to the muddy ground, but this time with you on top of him.
“Are you okay?” He asks the loud pouring of the rain forcing him to raise the volume of his voice.
You chuckle at his concern considering he’s the one flat on his back. “I think I should be asking you that question instead.” You pause as he mirrors your grin. “Why did you stop? Did I do something wrong?”
“No.” He looks up at you, his brow furrowing. “You did nothing wrong. It was me. I was the one acting on my instincts. I shouldn’t have done that when I know how much you hate me.”
“I don’t hate you...” You explain, trying your best not to be drowned out by the water cascading down. “The things you did might have annoyed me, but I get it now. I’m just sorry it took me so long to notice.”
“Notice what?”
“How fucked up your situation is. For not realizing how alone you must have been. How caged you must have felt. I’ve been so focused on my own little world that I didn’t realize what was happening or why you were acting the way you were. I like you, a lot, but I was too wrapped up in my frustration to say how I felt...”
“It’s not your fault.”
You shake your head. “I am not innocent in this. I should have been paying more attention.”
“Then pay attention to me now.” He begs with his round eyes shining up at you.
“But in what way? As a neighbour, as a friend, or maybe something more?" Your voice cracks in desperation, trying to find his needs while also hoping they are the same as yours. “Is that why you were always teasing me the way you did? You wanted something more?”
“You really want to know?” Jungkook’s tone is low as it grips on to his every word. “I did it because it was the only thing that could distract me from my incessant need for you. Seeing your reactions and having your attention kept me in check. I’m very different from you and I’m aware it could cause a problem. I wasn’t sure if you could ever fully want me because of that.” He reaches to rub around the base of his ears. “But every day that I looked over I wanted to hold you, to claim you, to take you right here on this very spot. So often I dreamed of jumping the fence and coming for you instead of...”
You smile down at him, noting his near admission. “Instead of?”
“Instead of watching from a distance.” He smirks, catching and narrowly fixing his statement. Pleading guilty only to his longing for you.
“Then do it.” You demand of him.
He groans from his position beneath you. “Don’t tease me like that.”
“I’m not. You weren’t the only one peeking through the fence Jungkook.” Reaching up to your collar you tug off your shirt. He follows your lead with his own to reveal his sculpted chest he’s taunted you with so many times. “I don’t care if we’re different from each other. I don’t care if it causes a problem.” You shift back on his body traveling from your seat near his stomach down to his hips, his clothed dick firm and pressing against you. A moan escapes his lips, confirming that you’ve made your point. “There’s no one else nearby, so if you want me so much that you’re willing to fuck me out here, in the rain and mud-”
His hands come to grip your waist, and in one swift motion, he lifts you off, maneuvering out from underneath, to fall into place behind you. From there he pushes you down to your hands and knees, his body bent over yours. “You have no idea how much I want to.” He whispers with a kiss to your bare shoulder damp from the rain that continues to pour.
He takes off your bra before his face moves down your back, nose trailing against your skin and pausing at your shorts. Unfastening the button he pulls them down, freeing you of your underwear too before they are both cast aside. “I want to smell you, and taste you.” Jungkook takes in a deep breath, wrapping an arm around your legs, and barring your thighs. He buries his face between your legs, his tongue reaching out to deliver a long lick to your folds pausing after every lap.
Your palms dig into the ground, the cool mud coming to the surface to meet them. You buck against his tongue but the forearm holding you remains firm, sending your squirming downward to bury your elbows in the soggy grass too.
Jungkook chuckles as you inadvertently give him a better angle. From behind you can hear the zipper of his own shorts. Rubbing the head of his cock against your damp folds, he covers it with the slick of your slit, and with a long groan he eases it inside. He’s slow at first, letting you savor the girth and warmth of him. So you start to edge back and forward on his cock. Taking the time to enjoy every inch, along with the sounds that leave him. But when he returns to take control, the first thrust is so powerful, his thighs hit your ass with a loud clap, and every jolt of his hips after, drives you further down each time.
A stuttering groan escapes him as he fills you. Thinking he’s finished you lean forwards and until his cock pulls out, but in response he grabs your waist. Turning you over, back to the ground on top of the discarded clothes and facing him.
He lowers himself pressing his chest against yours. His fingers reach to grab your chin and take a kiss. His cock, despite having come only moments before, is hard once more and poised to enter once again.
“How are you-” You manage to squeeze a few words in the gaps between his kisses as he draws breath. “Ready for more-” Another pass of his tongue. “Already?”
“You have my hybrid traits to thank for that.” He moves to nibble on the side of your throat. “I have more to give you, if you want it.”
You nod unable to emit any noise other than a gasp as his mouth finds a sensitive spot on your neck. His dick forges in again, your slick and his cum dripping out of you as he fills you with himself instead.
You’ve avoided touching him with your own hands as they are patched with mud, but as his thrusts grow more powerful than even before, you’re forced to grab on his arms and chest. Leaving behind streaks of dirt which display the path of your grip. Jungkook doesn’t seem to mind though, in fact looks rather encouraged by your touch, and the marks you leave him.
“What a dirty woman you are, and getting me all messy too.” He scoffs while admiring your handiwork. “Can I return the favour?”
“Help me come first and you can do whatever the fuck you want.” You gasp on the brink of your climax.
His ears perk up and a grin streaks across his face. “Close are you?” He grabs your calf and wraps your leg around his back, the other follows suit and his hand comes to rest on your lower back pushing you up and into him effectively grinding your mount against him.
You gasp and flinch with the sudden pressure, but he holds you firm as your back arches to meet him.
His hips beat on at a rapid pace, a small whimper escapes him as you reach the peak, tipping you over the edge. The chilling rain can in no way can douse the searing heat that spreads through you. You're still gasping when his jaw clamps down hard, his teeth poised upon your skin. The first pulse of his cock comes inside, but on the second he pulls out to splatter your chest and stomach with the rest. His hand comes to clutch his shaft, spilling more out and on to you with each stroke.
After every remaining drop has been cast on you he smiles, dragging his fingers across the rain drenched mess of mud and cum on your skin. “Never thought I’d ever see you so thoroughly soiled.”
You giggle at his remarks through your deep breaths. “And now that you do, what do you think?”
“I think it suits you, the dirt, the rain, and me...” He lowers himself down onto you, with his head now resting upon your shoulder. “It’s too bad though. Now I just want more, but we’re both far too filthy to carry on like this.”
You turn to whisper at the base of his ear. “Who says we can’t continue in the shower...”
...
You wake early the next morning with the sun spilling into the room, lighting up your bed, and the hybrid sleeping next to you. His ears and nose twitching as he continues to rest. Slipping out from the covers, and into a set of clean gardening clothes, you exit the room with as little sound as possible.
On the tile floor of your hall, muddy footprints trail from your backdoor to your bathroom.  A smile pulls at your lips as you recall the events which brought them there. Jungkook had been so excited to keep going he picked you up and rushed you inside.
The feeling from the warm water and hands in contrast to the cool rain was enough to bring back the waves of pleasure. He was so thorough in washing you down, you might have to ask him to join you for another this morning and repay the favour.
Outside in the garden you find all your harvest from the day before present and untouched. You’re pleased by this new development, but it’s not the fact that your crops are intact which makes you happy, it’s the comfort in knowing that Jungkook didn’t feel the need to take them.
A few minutes later the hybrid in question comes up behind you wrapping his arms around your waist pulling with him a blanket he took from the bed to cover the both of you. “Morning.” He mumbles, as his nose finds the crook of your neck where he exhales with a deep and relaxed sigh.
“Morning.” You respond, enjoying the tickle of his breath before you turn around to better see him. “It seems the thief didn’t strike last night. ”
“I guess they found a new garden to plunder and devour?” Jungkook suggests, giving you a sly grin, before he opens his mouth again. It’s easy to see that he’s getting ready to confess, his face shifts to a stern expression as he looks down at the ground, the guilt weighing heavily upon his brow. Placing your index to his lips you stop him. No longer needing to hear those words of admission, you offer a new proposal instead.
“Maybe, but that was just one night. The thief might still come back. So if it’s alright with you I would like you to stay here. Until we can be sure they won’t return.”
Jungkook lets out a satisfied chuckle, pushing aside your finger and pulling you tighter into his warm embrace. “You’re right, I suppose it would be safer if I stayed.” His lips plant a kiss on the top of your head where he then rests his chin. “A temptation as enticing as this, shouldn’t be left alone and unattended.”

The fountain
Fenrys Moonbeam x reader x Dorian Havilliard
I haven’t posted in a while because of school for what I’m really sorry. I’m trying to answer to all your requests but it’s taking me longer than usual to write anything. By the end of this week I should post two more works. Please be patient <3 Here’s Fen x reader x Dorian fic, hope you enjoy!
Warnings: mention of depression, slightly nsfw at the end
Words: about 1800
***
You never expected to survive this war. In fact, you never planned to. Since the very young age you fought hand in hand with your brother Aedion in many battles. The Bane and The Fury - powerful twin armies commanded by the two of you that have worked in secret with rebel forces since Terrasen’s downfall. Agreeing to lead your people to freedom you knew one day the final battle will come. Not once you watched your people loose their lives and frequently you looked into death’s eyes to the point where you were ready to die for your friends and country any time. Many times though you wanted to give up. The only thing keeping you from doing so was your twin. For a long time you had only each other and you knew one’s death would be the end of the other. Later came Aelin, then Rowan, Lysandra with Evangeline and others. Although as your family grew bigger you started to feel more alone. And then the day of final war came as promised. You have witnessed the death of your friends again. You just found your father and you already had to say goodbye to him. You have lost your motivation, hope and few times you felt like loosing your will to live yet at the end of the day, you survived. Because of them.
You all saved each other. Three broken and lonely souls that needed a hand to hold when it became too much but were too scared to ask for help. Dorian made the first step - somehow he heard your screams caused by one of your nightmares that hunted you every night. He pulled you away from your torment and helped you calm down. The dark shadows under his eyes suggested that his demons also didn’t let him sleep peacefully. The two of you spent this night in each other’s silent company, knowledge that you weren’t alone in this shit made you feel a little bit better. After few nights like this you started talking and soon it became a habit. Dorian would slip into your bed when traumatic past didn’t let you close your eyes and keep you company as your presence helped him survive till the morning.
Unfortunately your nightmares also followed you through the day and Dorian not always was there. You decided to venture into the deepest parts of the forest in moments like this, hide in places where no one could find you. Or at least you thought no one could find you. That was until you saw White Wolf of Doranelle sitting on one of the hills with his head down, no sign of his usual sarcasm or sly smirk. Aelin told you what he went through under Maeve’s orders. You understood. Mere thought about loosing your beloved brother made you sick. You decided to overcome your anxiety that day and offered him your company and comforting words. Fenrys always was the type to talk for hours so a person he could confide to and be understood was exactly what he needed. To your surprise Fenrys made you feel so comfortable around him that you started telling him your own story. After hours that felt like minutes both of you came back to the castle with big smiles on your faces.
The night that changed everything was the night of Beltane. You headed to Dorian’s chambers, tired after whole evening of pretending that everything is alright.
You knocked gently at his door and slipped in without waiting for invitation. You supposed Dorian will be preparing for bed or already waiting under covers for you to come and help him bear another night yet you found him in the living room, bottle of vine in his hand as he laid sprawled out on his couch. Next to Fenrys. Both of them already tipsy with their eyes a bit red but not from the alcohol.
“I’m sorry.” you stood shocked and a little bit guilty. “I didn’t meant to interrupt.”
You turned around to leave but Dorian’s soft voice stopped you.
“Stay please.”
You weren’t quite sure how it happened. Maybe it was caused by one glass of vine too much or just the need to forget but somehow you ended up between those two males that night. After few passionate hours you laid against Fenrys’ chest and played with Dorian’s black hair as he rested his head on your laps. You had no doubts at this point. Around them you felt comfortable like never before. They understood you just like you understood each of them.
All three of you started hanging out together all the time and after few weeks none of your smiles were fake. You started truly laughing and enjoying company of other people again. Your true self was going back to life. It wasn’t easy but you managed to eventually. Fenrys and Dorian always were there to hold you at night when you woke up screaming. Together with your king you were more than happy to shower Fenrys in affection and cuddle him between you when he started getting clingy and touch starved. Both you and Fenrys always rushed to Dorian’s side when memories of the Valg prince inside his mind hunted him and he started to panic. All those late night talks, afternoon picnics on the meadow full of flowers, book dates and loving words were like revival.
So there you stood. Blush on your face, lips aching from constants smiles and no air left in lungs after hours of dancing. Summer wind cooled your heated skin as you admired the night with glass of champagne in your hand. Cheerful laughs and lively music could be heard from miles as the half of Terrasen celebrated Aedion and Lysandra’s wedding.
Warm, muscular body pressed against you. Entwining his arms around your waist Fenrys kissed your bare shoulders and rested his chin on top of your head. Immediately you melted into his touch, turning your head you grasped his cheek and pulled him in for a kiss. His lips tasted like alcohol and chocolate. The kiss was soft and slow, relaxing even, letting you forget about whole world.
“Hey! Without me?” You pulled away from your boyfriend and saw your another one already heading towards you with smirk on his face. His black hair were messy and his shirt was partially unbuttoned. Red cheeks and sparkles in his shapphire blue eyes indicated that he had just come off the dance floor.
Fenrys smiled warmly, his onyx eyes were soft as he reached one hand to entertain Dorian’s waist and pull him in for a kiss. Dorian cupped his lover’s cheeks enjoying the sweet taste of his lips. Still pressed against Fenrys’ chest you stared at your boyfriends with small smile eyes full of admiration. You nuzzled your head into Fenrys' chest and closed your eyes. King’s hand fell to your hip as you stood there happy with each others presence.
“Already tired, love?” Dorian addressed these words to you. It was almost three in the morning yet the party was in full swing and nothing indicated that it’ll end soon.
“I just need a little break.” Those loud noises, liqueur in your veins and hours of swirling around the dance floor made you dizzy and you knew that if you hadn't go out and took a breath you would throw up.
“We can go back to our chambers and use the rest of the night in different way if you want.” Fenrys nibbled your earlobe, his hot breath made you shiver. Clearly Dorian liked this idea because you felt his phantom hands slowly running up your legs.
“I’m afraid I’ll fall asleep as soon as I touch our bed.” You joked and opened your eyes. Male behind you smiled against your skin and you knew he's already plotting something mischievous.
“Then let’s go and wake you up a little!” Fenrys scooped you up into his arms, motioned to Dorian to follow him and ran towards the gardens. Before you could even blink you were thrown into fountain. Neither Fenrys nor Dorian were thinking straight anymore because second later two bodies jumped in. Cold water immediately made you sober but you didn’t mind, you weren't thinking straight either. Deciding to don't worry and just go with the moment you brushed wet hair out of your face you throw yourself at Dorian attacking his lips with yours. Fenrys pressed against you from behind and stared leaving hickeys your neck and shoulders. A female voice interrupted you before you all could go any more further.
“First of all - ew! Second of all, in a fountain? Really?!” you looked up and saw your younger cousin Aelin staring at you with her arms crossed. Next to her stood her husband, Rowan. Both of them clearly trying not to laugh.
“First of all, don’t act like you’re a saint. Second of all, judging by your scent and red faces you weren’t just sitting there, admiring the night so shut up.” You stood up with a sly smirk and fixed your completely wet dress. “Not only Lysanda and Aedion can have fun tonight.”
Dorian also stood up and helped you get out of the fountain. Fenrys shook off the water from his hair like a dog. All three of you were completely wet.
“Yeah, sure. Just please do it somewhere else.” Rowan said with a smirk and started pulling his wife away. “There are also children on this wedding!” Aelin shouted over her shoulder and waved you goodbye.
You waved back and started pulling your lovers towards the castle.
“Where are we going, darling?” Even though they were behind you, you could see their smiles. Fenrys’ hand felt to your ass and squeezed it hard. You stopped as a moan escaped your lips. Dorian ran into you and you felt his erection against your butt.
“To use the rest of this night in a different way.” You started walking again determined to get to your bedroom (or even living room, doesn’t matter) as fast as possible and make love with Dorian and Fenrys to unconscious.
“Are you sure you won’t fall asleep, darling?” Dorian teased, his phantom hands already playing with your entrance making it hard to walk straight.
“Actually it depends on you. Don’t disappoint me, darling.” You teased back. Your dirty talk always made them loose their control. This time was no different.
Your dress was torn apart as soon as you entered your private living area. Your shoes and panties disappeared within second and you were pushed down on the couch.
“We should throw you in the fountain more often.” Said Fenrys, already shirtless and unbuttoning his pants.
“Indeed.” Dorian smiled before kneeling between your legs.

Tumblr media
“I am sorry, you what now?”
“Listen, it’s really not a big dea-”
“You’re telling me you got so hot in your apartment because your air conditioner broke that you passed out on the floor of your apartment for almost four hours - alone, I might add - and you really have the audacity to try to tell me that’s not a big deal?!”
So maybe telling your older brother about your morning adventure to the floor of your apartment wasn’t your brightest moment but in your defence, finals just ended and they stole your last surviving brain cell in their departure. It was as if Seonghwa’s mom radar had been pinging off the charts from the moment you stepped foot in the cafe with him taking one look at you before ordering you to sit down at an empty table while he ordered what seemed to be one of every baked good they had to offer and an iced tea for the both of you. You would’ve preferred a cold brew if you were being totally honest, but you knew better than to try to fight him once you saw the hard glare he was sending you from the counter. Taking a glance in one of the decorative antique mirrors the local joint had on the wall, you couldn’t really fault your brother for his reaction to you because, for lack of a better word, you looked like total shit. Settling into the worn armchair, you began fiddling with a loose strand on the cushion beside you as you awaited the inevitable scolding you were in for.
“Okay, okay - I get it,” you relented as Seonghwa stared you down looking bug-eyed at your previous deflection, “perhaps that wasn’t my greatest moment - but! At least I know now and I can just make sure to always keep my fans on and drink loads of water.” You offered what you hoped to be a convincing smile, but even you knew it was a weak resolution to your predicament.
“Yeah, no, that’s not happening. I’ve listened to enough of your nightmare landlord stories to know this isn’t getting fixed any time soon and I refuse to leave my baby sister to boil to death in her cooker of an apartment.”
You rolled your eyes at Seonghwa’s dramatic metaphor but couldn’t find it in you to fight him. The past few weeks had slowly been chipping away at you and you were more exhausted than you were willing to let on. This episode with your broken air conditioner was only the latest in a series of mishaps you had been trying to push through without asking for help and you were dangerously close to reaching the end of your rope.
“And what exactly would you propose I do instead?”
“Just stay with me and Yunho until it’s sorted out. You can sleep on the spare mattress in his room that’s left from before San moved out.”
Seonghwa’s look of worry was tainted ever so slightly with a smirk now as you promptly choked on your drink at the sound of his suggestion.
“Are you sure I’m the one we should be worrying about? Because you sound like you’ve lost your fucking mind.” You managed to rasp out, still recovering from spitting your drink out.
“What are you talking about? It’s a perfectly reasonable idea.” He replied, the smirk now the prominent expression on his face.
“Yeah sure, except for the part where I have a humiliating crush on your roommate that may or may not have developed into actual f- words,” you whisper-shouted at him, “and you’re my brother? Shouldn’t you, I don’t know, not be encouraging me to sleep in the same room as a boy?”
“Okay firstly, did you seriously censor the word feelings out loud? What kind of internet crap is that? Is that what kids do these days?” He looked at you with the faint look of dismay that he always has when hearing slang words he didn’t understand. “And secondly, it’s not the 1950s anymore, who am I to dictate your love life? If anything, Yunho is the ideal guy for me to put you with - he’s my best friend and the literal definition of boyfriend material, not to mention the part where he likes you back, idiot.” He took a bite of his cake as he gave you a pointed look.
“That’s wishful thinking and you know it, Seonghwa, don’t put ideas in my head that will lead to heartbreak. Maybe he has a soft spot for me, but he’s like that with all his dongsaengs, I’m no different from them.” You mumble out as you turn your attention to the floor, missing the exaggerated eye roll your brother was sending you.
It wasn’t exactly difficult for you to develop feelings for Yunho. Your brother wasn’t lying when he called Yunho boyfriend material. The first thing that entered your mind when you thought of Yunho was soft smiles. He perpetually looked so gentle and even when he got more boisterous when hanging out with you and the rest of the boys, he always approached you with such care. Somehow he managed to both look like a puppy personified and a greek sculpture come to life. One second he’d be looking at you with the biggest doe eyes you’d ever seen and the next he’d be throwing around salacious smirks as if he had any right to do so, when they made your mind go places less than holy. So it was inevitable, honestly, that somewhere between him memorising your coffee order and the sight of his biceps flexing when he offered to carry your bag for you, that you would start drowning into him a little. Whatever your brother saw, however, wasn’t close to reality. You weren’t so unaware to think that Yunho was indifferent to you - you knew that with a fluttering of your eyes you could get his help with almost anything. But you were certain that’s just how he is with younger friends, he’s just as soft for Jongho as he is for you.
To prove your point, seeing Jongho himself enter the cafe you waved him over to get his help convincing your brother he’s a fool for thinking Yunho thought anything romantic about you.
“Jonghooooo, my favourite! Tell my brother that he’s stupid please.” You peered up at Jongho’s stoic face, praying for the solidarity he usually shows you with the two of you being the youngest out of your friend group.
“I mean, Seonghwa being stupid is a given but what is this about specifically?”
“He said that Yunho likes me in a romantic way which is obviously not true - he treats all of us younger than him the same.” You continued, pointedly ignoring the squawking that Seonghwa had been emitting ever since you had started talking to Jongho.
“You’re the stupid one there Y/N.” Jongho deadpanned and this time it was you squawking indignantly. “I might be able to get free food every time we go out, but you’re the only one Yunho would drop anything for - which he has done, multiple times.”
“I- you know what, you’re all dumb.” You pouted out, crossing your arms.
“That’s fine, but I hope you know I’m not giving you a choice with this - you’re coming to stay with me and Yunho.” Seonghwa informed you, officially back in protective mode.
Jongho looked down at the two of you confused before you sighed and filled him in on your fainting episode. Stifling a laugh behind his fist, his gummy smile came to view after hearing about Seonghwa’s solution.
“Well, Yunho will have no issue with it I’m sure, but you have fun explaining this to him - because let me tell you, the protectiveness he has for you Y/N isn’t a dongsaeng privilege, that’s for you only.”
As nervous as you were to face Yunho and be sharing a room with him, you couldn’t deny your gratitude to your brother for giving you an alternate sleeping arrangement. The day had only seemed to get hotter and hotter and you were sure that if you had stayed in your place, you’d be sweating buckets by now. Sitting on the kitchen stools your brother had found on the street with his boyfriend Hongjoong, you tilted backwards precariously relishing in the blasting cool air of the AC.
“Oh my God, I think you’re trying to give me a heart attack at this point. For the millionth time, will you please stop swinging on these chairs before you crack your skull open.” Seonghwa sounded exasperated as he pushed you upright, but all you did was smile innocently at him as you turned your attention back to your now melting popsicle, throwing a wave to Hongjoong, who had entered with your older brother.
“Hey there little one, you feeling alright? Hwa told me about what happened.” Hongjoong glanced at you with concern as he shuffled over to give you a side hug.
“I am much better now that I am surrounded by this sweet, sweet cool air.” You giggled out.
“We’re heading out now, so I’ll see you later tonight, okay?”
Seonghwa looked to you for confirmation that you heard and you just nodded your head absentmindedly, now more invested in your pinterest feed than watching your brother and his boyfriend get cuddly as they walked out to go on a date. Just as they reached the door you heard it open from the outside as they collided with Yunho returning from what you would guess had been another day spent at the dance studio.
“Hey, Seonghwa told me you’re staying with us for a while, what happened? Are you okay?” Yunho’s voice floated down to you as you felt his presence towering over beside you.
Looking up at him, though, proved to be a fatal mistake as you came face to face with his shirtless body and hair dripping with sweat in a way that somehow looked good which quite frankly should be a crime - who the hell even looks good with greasy hair? Your brain didn’t seem to catch up to any part of your body it seemed, as your frozen treat slipped out of your hand and for the second time that day you began to feel fuzzy in your head (though, a different kind of heat was the culprit this time). You only realised that you had spaced out entirely when you became aware of Yunho’s large hand waving in front of you, a look of unease finding its way onto his soft features.
“For real, did something happen? Did someone do something to you?” His voice held a sharp edge as he voiced the latter question, eyes hardening as he gingerly cupped your face.
Shaking your head vehemently, you swallowed audibly. “No, no nothing like that I just kind of fainted in my apartment because it’s, ya know, hot, no biggie.” You nervously tried to laugh it off but the words out loud seemed to sound worse each time you relayed the story to someone new.
“Y/N, what the hell, were you alone? Did you hit your head? How long were you unconscious for? We need to take you to a hospital.” Yunho spitfired questions at you as he started to frantically pat you down as if he was in search of some life-threatening injury that he had missed.
“Hey, hey, calm down it’s okay, I’m okay, why are you freaking out so much?” You grabbed his hands in an effort to still him.
“I, listen, that doesn’t matter, what matters is that you’re okay.” His eyes searched yours for any hint of discomfort but all he could find was confusion.
“I mean, it matters to me, Seonghwa didn’t even freak out this much.”
“Yeah, well Seonghwa isn’t in love with you like I am.” Yunho blurted out in response. With his ears tinted pink, he seemed to realise what he had just said and attempted to pull his hands out of yours. “Shit, sorry, I uh, I wasn’t supposed to tell you like that, well let’s be real I wasn’t supposed to tell you at all because you don’t feel the same way but little late for that now. Listen, I totally understand that it’s one-sided and I can give you spa-”
You promptly shoved your hand over his mouth to interrupt his blabbering, an endeared smile adorning your features along with a rush of blood to your cheeks.
“I certainly would hope Seonghwa doesn’t love me in the way you do because for starters, he’s my brother so ew and also I may be a little in love with you too.” You whisper, even though it’s just the two of you, feeling overwhelmed at the sudden change in events. “So, actually, I think I’d quite like it if you didn’t give me space and maybe, I don’t know, invaded it instead.”
Even as you said it yourself, you couldn’t help but cringe a little at how cheesy the line sounded but Yunho didn’t seem to mind as his face lit up and he stood in between your legs as you stayed perched on the stool. He moved his hands to grip your waist as he hauled you up onto the countertop instead, putting your face level with his own.
“You know, Seonghwa suggested that I, uh, that I sleep in your room on San’s old bed, but I don’t know maybe I should be kept under closer supervision, after all I did faint today.” Your voice somehow came out even quieter than before, but it didn’t waver as you left your proposition hanging in the air left between your faces.
“Hmm, I think you might be right about that, I mean it would only be right for me to share my space with you. I need to be able to check up on you and make sure that the heat hasn’t gotten to you again. We ought to be responsible, I think.” He feigned innocence but his eyes were trained on your lips as he spoke.
You brushed your lips against his, barely a ghost of a touch, as you smirked.
“Let’s go be responsible in your bed then.”

Tumblr media
Most days, like any other university student, you would wake up tired. Unfortunately for you, that was not today. You had spent the entire night working on your lab report for one of your science courses and didn’t get a wink of sleep. At least it was handed in and done with.
(You had to double check - just in case your brain decided to get desperate and help you imagine the best case scenarios. Thinking and doing were two very different things, they were hard to tell apart when you were so dead tired though.)
It was one of those days.
“Morning, Honey Lemon,” you greeted as you navigated your way into the kitchen for some caffeine. Grabbing your travel coffee tumbler, you watched your blonde roommate in her morning stretching routine.
“Good morning, (Y/N)!” Honey cheerfully replied. “How was not sleeping last night?”
You halted your movements, looking up at her with concern. “Can you tell just by looking at me?”
Honey Lemon laughed. “No, silly. GoGo came home late last night and saw you up. I heard you shuffling around earlier this morning too. No raccoon eyes, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Thank goodness,” you said with a sigh as you continued pouring liquid energy into your tumbler. “This bio course is going to be the death of me.”
“You mean working two part time jobs will be the death of you,” GoGo corrected you as she walked out of her room. “Girl, you need time to have fun too.”
You stuck your tongue out at her. Rummaging through backpack, you noticed a missing tome of knowledge. “Has anyone seen my Medical Terms bible?”
“Coffee table.” Honey called out from the living room as she held the tree pose.
GoGo walked over to you with the heavy book in hand. You mouthed a thank you to her before taking a sip of coffee.
“(Y/N), you need to take some time to make some more friends or meet a cute boy,” Honey Lemon brought up. She exchanged a look with GoGo. “We know someone who you might like. He’s nice and funny, good looking as well.”
You gave your two roommates a sad smile. “By the time I’m ready for a relationship, a boy like that will already be snatched up by someone less stressed about their future.”
Grabbing your premade meals and a couple of snacks, you swung your backpack on.
“I work bookstore and pharmacy today, so I’ll see you both tomorrow morning. Good luck with your projects in the meantime.”
“Bye, (Y/N)!” Honey called out.
“Keep the luck, you need it more than we do,” GoGo said with salute.
Walking out of the apartment, you checked your phone for your schedule once more. Class at nine, bookstore at two and pharmacy at six. And it was already eight thirty, yay. Just your typical jam packed day, all so that you could pay off medical school tuition in the future.
Balancing everything in life was... impossible, but you were managing.
Full course load university student, working two part time jobs, and a very minimal but still existent social life.
It wasn’t easy, but it was what you wanted. Going to med school was a necessary path to take if you wanted to help people out in your future career choice.
Just as you were arriving on campus, a voice caught your attention.
“(Y/N)…!”
You turned to see your friend Mina, another sufferer pre-med student.
“Hi Mina,” you greeted.
“Did you sleep last night?” she asked. When you shook your head, she let out a loud sigh. “Yeah, me too. Dr. Andrews is going to kill us with these lab reports and the test Thursday. I mean, I’d feel smarter if I weren’t so tired all the time.”
You smiled. What a mood.
“Is my make up, okay?” Mina asked. “I don’t want Justin to see me at my worse - not yet.”
You glanced over Mina’s face. She had gone through the usual effort to make herself look cute. “You look fine and I’m sure Justin wouldn’t be scared off. He knows we’re med students.”
Mina made a face. “We’ve only been a dating for two months, (Y/N), two! He doesn’t know what kind of crazy we are yet. You never know when he might get skittish and ghost me.”
If you weren’t so tired, you would have laughed.
Linking arms with Mina, you pulled her towards the classroom.
Today was going to be just another day.

Tadashi checked over the information on his phone as he walked off campus towards the bookstore. He had been looking up information to help his robotics project and a certain book had come up in his recommendations. Deciding that the resource was worth checking out, and was worth the price, he was determined to get his hands on the book while his robot was still in the works.
Walking through the doors, he made his way to the medical section. Browsing the shelves, he kept an eye out for the particular title.
After circling the area for a while, he let out a huff. Where was this textbook?
Noticing a girl wearing a name tag, he approached her with smile.
“Hi, I was wondering if you could help me?”
She turned to him with a smile, (E/C) eyes making contact with his brown orbs.
“Of course, are you looking for something?”
Tadashi nodded, pulling out his phone and showing her the textbook information.
"Ahhh, this one. That’s a popular book with the first year pre-med student courses,” she commented. “Everyone always asks where this one is - we organize this one by title since there’s no author.”
Leading him back into the medical section, the girl stopped in an area of the bookstore that Tadashi had missed earlier. She tapped the spine of one of the books.
“This one is good resource for in depth procedural explanations,” she explained. “Not what you were looking for though...”
Scanning the shelves, the girl paused and frowned when she stopped a particular spot.
“Is it out of stock?” she murmured, checking again. “For a textbook no one appreciates until third year, I’d be surprised if it’s sold out...” She turned back to Tadashi with an apologetic smile. “I’ll check if we have the book in stock - give me a second.”
Pulling out her phone, she typed up some information quickly. The results of her searching seemed to yield the same results.
“It looks like we’re actually out of stock for this textbook right now, although, we are restocking it,” she explained. “Would you like to request a reserve to get a copy?”
“That would be helpful, sure,” Tadashi agreed.
“Great, let’s go fill out a form for you,” she chirped, leading him away. “Are you a med student?”
“No, I’m a robotics engineering student at SFIT,” he replied. “I’m working on something related to the medical field though.”
“Really? That’s so cool,” she exclaimed, looking genuinely interested. “It’s amazing to think how technology can incorporated into health sciences. If you don’t mind me asking, what are you working on?”
“A healthcare robot,” Tadashi explained with a fond smile. “It’s still in the works, nothing has been finished yet, I’m still working on the programming stages.”
“I think that’s incredible. I’m sure you’re capable of amazing things.”
The sincerity in her tone brought a smile to his face. For someone who didn’t know much about his project, the kind words from her were very nice.
“What about you?” Tadashi asked. “Are you a student?”
“Yeah, over at Sato Health Institute,” she responded. Sato was the top post secondary institution for health care in San Fransokyo located nearby - it even shared some programs with SFIT as Tadashi recalled. “I’m a pre-med student - if you hadn’t already guessed.”
“I might have had a feeling,” Tadashi said with a grin. “You seemed like you were familiar with things firsthand.”
The girl laughed. “Lots of firsthand experience, trust me.”
Approaching the help desk, the girl popped around to grab a paper and pen. Scrawling down information onto the page first, she then slid the paper over to Tadashi across the counter.
“Just fill out the rest of the form and the textbook should be arriving in the next three days.”
Tadashi looked up from filling in the form, brown eyes flicking over to her name tag. “Thank you so much, (Y/N).”
“You’re welcome,” she replied. She took a sip from her coffee tumbler. Grabbing a sticky note, she offered it over to Tadashi. “If you’d like, leave your number and I’ll text you when it arrives - I’ll be working that day. I promise to use your number for professional reasons only.”
“I’d appreciate that,” Tadashi said as he wrote his number down. As he finished his form, he noticed a large medical terms textbook behind the counter on the desk next to the computer with a ton of sticky notes sticking out. “Is that yours?”
“That’s my current bible,” she affirmed with an amused tone. “Can’t survive without it.”
The two of them shared a laugh.
“Thanks again for your help.” Tadashi repeated as he returned the form.
“Just doing my job, don’t worry about it! It was great meeting you...” Her (E/C) eyes flickered down to the form and smile appeared on her face. “...Tadashi.”
As Tadashi left the bookstore, part of him was still lingering behind, thinking about (Y/N). She seemed like a nice girl and he really hoped that they might have another chance to encounter her again.

You fumbled with the door before pushing it open, popping back into the dark apartment. Hitting the light switch, you took off your shoes and checked for signs of your roommates.
Looks like Honey Lemon and GoGo were still out.
No surprise.
The three of you were always busy, whether the other two liked to admit it or not.
Just as you were sorting things out in the kitchen and about to grab a snack, your phone buzzed.
Mina: OMG. Did you see Terry’s SNS profile update? 🤣🤣
(Y/N): What did he do this time? Do I want to know??
Mina: He put MD CANDIDATE. The AUDACITY of this man - I got a C+ working with partner project with him. My poor GPA... 😭
(Y/N): I mean...
Mina: DON’T
(Y/N): Cs get degrees 😂
Mina: RIP me. Seriously though, are you free to study for that bio test?
(Y/N): let me grab my snack first, I’ll see you video chat
Mina: True MD candidate here
(Y/N): HA
Letting out a sigh, you swiped a snack from the cupboard before heading back to your room. Fingers crossed you would get some sleep tonight.

“Oh, finally!”
Tadashi wiped his hands off with a rag and turned to look at Fred. Wasabi and GoGo were also looking at the beanie wearing boy, but neither of them decided to engage.
“Something up?” Tadashi asked, speaking up.
“The comic bookstore said they were out of that new series I was telling you guys about the other day,” Fred explained. “I refused to go to Richardson’s place, so apparently, they reached out to the nearby bookstore and they have a copy! I got to go pick it up.”
“The one near campus?”
“Yup.”
Tadashi paused, thinking for a moment before making his decision.
“I’ll come with you.”
“Let’s go then, man!”
Catching up with Fred about the current condition of Baymax, the two soon arrived at the bookstore. Fred immediately beelined towards the help desk with Tadashi trailing behind him.
Just as Tadashi anticipated, a familiar face was working at the desk. This time though, (Y/N) was fairly concentrated on the stack of flashcards piled on her space next to textbooks filled with sticky notes.
“Uh, excuse me,” Fred said, practically bouncing on his toes.
That was enough to jolt her out of her studying. Shoving away her flashcards, she offered Fred a smile. “Yes?”
“I believe someone called about -”
“Oh! I know what you’re here for,” (Y/N) said, jumping up. She got up and skimmed over the bookshelf behind the counter. “Ah, here it is. Fred, right?”
At the sight of his new comic, Fred nodded happily. He quickly accepted it from you. “Is there a comic book section?”
(Y/N) nodded. “Just straight that way, it’s not a big collection, but you might find something.”
“Alright, thanks!”
Fred turned to see Tadashi lingering around. “You coming, Tadashi?”
“There’s something I want to check out, I’ll catch up in a bit,” the black haired male responded.
As Fred disappeared, the girl turned her attention over to Tadashi.
“I didn’t think I would see you again so soon,” she commented. “The book is not in yet, sorry.”
Tadashi smiled. “That’s fine. I see you’re here often.”
“Yeah, when I’m not busy with classes or my other job, here I am.”
The words piqued your interest. “Other job?”
“I also work at a pharmacy,” (Y/N) explained.
“Ahh. You must be a busy person,” Tadashi said. He tilted his head towards your desk. “Studying too?”
She flushed. “Yeah. Only because today’s pretty quiet - my manager doesn’t mind as long as I’m work as I’m needed. There’s a test coming up.”
“Good luck, I think you need it.”
“I do. Thank you.”
Tadashi watched as (Y/N) moved back to sitting at the desk. As she picked up her flashcards, she looked up at Tadashi.
“How’s the healthcare robot going? Any progress in the last 24 hours?”
“Baymax finally had some supply come in for assembling,” he responded. “So, just a little bit.”
“Baymax?” she repeated confused. “Oh. Is that their name?”
Tadashi nodded.
“Baymax… I like it, sounds friendly.”
“I should probably let you get back to studying,” Tadashi commented, rubbing the back of his neck. “Sorry for bothering you.”
“Not at all, I’m happy to chat with you.”

- Wednesday. 6PM. -
Honey: (Y/N)?
(Y/N): What’s up, Honey Lemon?
Honey: I heard the pre-med students plan on throwing a party this weekend?
Honey: Are you going?
(Y/N): Nah, I think I have work.
GoGo: You always work.
(Y/N): Huh, I never noticed.
(Y/N): Anyways, parties are not my scene. I’d be happy spending a free evening at home instead.
GoGo: Mina says she’ll miss you.
(Y/N): She’ll have Justin, she’ll be okay
Honey: Well, if you ever decide to go, we know a boy you can take with you.
(Y/N): Thanks, but I’ll pass. 🥰

- Thursday. 5PM. -
Unknown: Hi Tadashi. The textbook you wanted finally came in! Feel free to drop by anytime to come pick it up.
Tadashi: Alright, thanks (Y/N)!
Unknown: Yep, no prob!
Tadashi: Hey, is this your personal number?
Unknown: yeah 😊
(Y/N) has been added to contacts.
Tadashi: Hope you don’t mind if I contact you like in the future. 😊
(Y/N): Oh, I wouldn’t mind at all!
Tumblr media
“Tadashi, hi,” you greeted, waving as the boy came into your line of sight. With a baseball cap on his head today, you almost mistaken him for someone else. Pulling out the textbook, you handed it over to him. “Here you go! You weren’t the only one trying to get your hands on this textbook today.”
Tadashi peered at you curiously as he accepted the textbook.
“You look tired,” he pointed out.
You just shrugged with a half smile. “The bio test was today - that was gruesome.”
“At least that’s done with,” he encouraged you. “Week’s almost over, too.”
“Best part is I’m off in five,” you agreed.
You could see your words caught Tadashi’s interest.
“Are... are you still working after?”
Shaking your head, you leaned back against the counter. “Nope, told them I was busy today so no shifts at the pharmacy tonight.”
“Would you like to go out with me then?” Tadashi asked hopefully. “We can hit up a café and grab something to eat?”
Good thing you were leaning against the counter, because the surprise you felt would have toppled you over.
“Oh, um, sure!” you agreed, cheeks heating up a little. “I’ll meet you outside in five?”
“Sounds good.”

- Friday. 9AM. -
Tadashi: I enjoyed my time with you yesterday.
(Y/N): I enjoyed my time too! Although the cookies there were kind of hard... 😢
Tadashi: Yeah... I find us somewhere with nice cookies next time.
(Y/N): Just a warning, next time might be a while. My schedule is usually full.
Tadashi: That’s fine!! If you ever find yourself with free time, let me know, I’d like to spend it with you.
(Y/N): 🥰
(Y/N): You’re too sweet, Tadashi.
(Y/N): How are you single??
Tadashi: Haha, I could ask you the same thing. Probably the same reasons as you though. I’m usually too focused with what’s in front of me.
Tadashi: Hope to see you around though.
(Y/N): me too
Tumblr media
- Some Tuesday. 8PM. -
“And your total is 18.95,” you said, pressing buttons on the register to confirm the amount. The customer tapped their card for the purchase before taking their bags. “I hope you feel better!”
“Thank you,” the customer responded as they left.
You waited until they had gone completely before heading back to find your manager. Spotting one of older pharmacy students, you decided to talk to them instead.
“Hi,” you greeted.
“(Y/N), need any drugs?” Harper asked with a smile.
“I’ll take them all,” you joked. “Let Aria know I left if you see her for me?”
“Yeah, go. You’re free,” she ushered, waving you away.
As you pulled on your jacket and stepped out of the pharmacy, a figure caught you by surprise.
“Tadashi!” you exclaimed.
“Surprised?” he asked. “Thought I’d walk you home, not safe for you to walk the street alone at night.”
“I do it frequent enough,” you countered with a smile.
“Ooh, risk taker,” Tadashi said.
You laughed. “I appreciate this though, thanks.”
Tadashi nodded. As the two of you were catching up each other on what happened throughout the day, you felt Tadashi slip his hand into yours. Fingers intertwined, you could feel your heart racing.
This was something you didn’t want to let go of.
Tumblr media
- Some Monday. 2PM. -
GoGo: Yo, Tadashi
GoGo: Fred wants to know when you’ll be back with the snacks.
Tadashi: Just stepped back on campus.
GoGo: Took you a while.
GoGo: You seeing someone behind our back?
Tadashi: Ha. Does Baymax count?
Tumblr media
- A couple weeks later. Friday. 10AM. -
“Someone looks cute today,” Mina commented as you sat down next to her in the lecture hall. She eyed you up and down, nodding approvingly. “Not working today?”
“Yeah,” you replied. “My rare day off besides class. Thought I’d put a little more effort in today.”
“Well, you look adorable,” Mina confirmed. She let out a sigh when she saw the professor walk in. “Let’s see if we can survive these next two hours.”
“Challenge accepted,” you said, bumping her shoulder playfully. “Although, I might lose you halfway.”
Mina gasped and smacked your arm.
You laughed as you pulled your laptop. Although the two hours went by at a decent pace, you were glad the course was three quarters way through.
At the brutal pace your professor went, there was nothing but review for the few weeks before final exams. It was nice to know you didn’t have to teach yourself an entire unit in a week before your final.
Bidding Mina goodbye, you weaved your way out of the lecture hall and out into campus. At this point, most groups of students you saw hanging around were study groups. You would have been like them too, if you hadn’t worked so hard to make things work.
Balancing two part time jobs along with classes had you putting in so much extra effort that it usually paid off in the long run.
Yay.
Navigating your way through the streets with the GPS app open on your phone, you soon spotted the campus you were looking for.
SFIT.
(Abbreviated, because thinking through what each letter stood for was too much effort.)
Slowly wandering around as you pulled up the campus directory, your eyes glimmered when you spotted the building you were looking for. Popping inside, you clutched onto your bag, peering around curiously. There was so much science happening in this space.
Lots of creativity too, you wondered why their tradition was to prank the art school.
Poking around, you soon realized you were lost among the many rooms and labs. Your mission was a failure. Pouting, you pulled your phone.
(Y/N): Help me, I’m lost.
Tadashi: What do you mean?
(Y/N): I wandered into the lab building and was going to surprise you with a visit, but I don’t know where to find you. 🙁
(Y/N): I didn’t think this through...
Tadashi: Awwww
Tadashi: What room number do you see? I’ll find you.
(Y/N): Lab 2B
Tadashi: omw
As you awkwardly waited for Tadashi to show up, you tried not to look suspicious. Although admittedly, you were sure you looked suspicious regardless since you were lost.
“There you are,” the soft yet deep voice greeted from behind you.
Turning around to see Tadashi, you smiled.
“Sorry for the trouble,” you apologized.
“Not at all.” Tadashi shook his head. He took a moment to take you in. Within his eyes, you were absolutely beautiful. He didn’t want to mess up, so he kept it to himself. He’d voice his thoughts one day. “Welcome to Nerd Lab, by the way.”
So this was where Tadashi, your roommates, and their friends all spent their long hours working.
Tadashi took your hand. “Come on, I want to show you my lab.”
Following after Tadashi, the two of you entered the elevator behind arriving on the floor of his personal lab space. He opened a door, showing you his tidy space.
“Baymax won’t be in the works for a while, but here,” he pulled out several large blueprints. The image of an almost plush like character was found in the middle. “This is going to be Baymax.”
In awe of all the labelled details and planning in place, you looked up at Tadashi.
“This is incredible,” you breathed out. “You’re incredible too.”
Tadashi dipped his head down and captured your lips for a kiss.
Before he had the opportunity to pull back too far, you went in and gave him a quick peck as well.
Although the two of you were flushed, the loving gaze you could see in Tadashi’s eyes made you feel hopeful about this relationship.
“Can I see the medical programming?” you asked, breaking the silence.
Tadashi shyly nodded. “All the computer.”
Tumblr media
- Later. -
(Y/N): Do you think we should let our friends know?
Tadashi: Nah, they’ll catch on eventually.
(Y/N): But if they don’t should I just accept their blind date request?
Tadashi: WHAT?
(Y/N): 😂
(Y/N): I asked for more details one time.
(Y/N): He’s this handsome robotics engineering student, who nice and has a good sense of humor. Apparently he’s very dedicated to his work too.
Tadashi: …
Tadashi: They’ve tried to set me up with their friend as well.
(Y/N): Hmm, maybe we were meant to be after all
Tadashi: I think so. 😀
(Y/N): 😘

Now we've set out scene, lets begin the pain;
Mia wasn't getting better, but she wasn't getting worse, she was finally stable, and so Daniel had finally gained courage to leave the hospital for one night to sleep in his own bed and wash in his own shower. He was grateful for the little parent bedrooms in the NICU, but the standard bed didn't match his foam mattress and fluffy pillows and the shower gel didn't feel right on his skin. It might only have been twelve hours he was away at maximum, but he felt refreshed and managed to step into the unit with confidence for once, well rested and ready to fight for his little pup yet again.
What he wasn't ready to walk past was Lando's incubator surrounded by doctors, equipment pulled from all over the room to his bedside and screens surrounding the space to prevent anyone from peering at what was going on. Even so, he could see through the gap in the screens enough to see Michael looking pale and sick with worry, tears staining his face.
Twenty minutes or so later, when Daniel had been reassured that Mia had had a stable night, had a morning feed and kiss from Daniel and settled back to sleep, Daniel looked up to see Michael hovering half a metre from him and staring blankly back at Lando, barely blinking let alone moving. "Hey," Daniel said softly, watching for Michael to look at him before continuing. "Shall we have a minute?"
Michael nodded, and Daniel murmured to a nurse he was taking Michael for a tea and a break in the kitchen if they needed either of them. Daniel brewed him a strong coffee, pushed an apple into his hand to at least out a bit of sugar in his system and just said nothing until eventually Michael broke the silence first.
"Lando's got a bowel infection, I think, I don't know, there were so many things they were telling me and so much happening all at once," Michael explained, face remaining blank as he reached for his coffee mug. "Its serious, it can be fatal, and his little body isn't handling it so now he won't breathe for himself and his blood pressure'd dropping and the doctors say he needs surgery to take the dead bit of his gut out but the surgeons say he's so sick he won't survive the surgery and its all fucking shit."
Daniel just purred softly and wrapped an arm around Michael's shoulders as the Alpha began to cry softly and carried on spilling everything. "He's not even a week old and he's so small and its Lara's post mortem day today and how am I meant to cope with all this?"
"Lando's a fighter and the doctors will help him," Daniel murmured a bit pathetically, not really feeling sure he was cut out to help here. "They'll get him settled and he'll come through his surgery I'm sure."
Michael just nodded quietly, taking a sip of coffee with a hiccup. "This is my fault," he murmured after a minute more. "I hated him the first day, you know? I couldn't look at him... the nurses said I could see him but I knew Lara was sick and every time I saw him I just thought...you took her from me. You took my Mate from me. Now he's really sick, and it's my fault, isn't it? But now if he dies, I'll have nothing left of her will I."
"It's not your fault," Daniel told him strongly, squeezing his shoulders tightly. "I can't even imagine how it must feel man, fuck that's... its a lot to deal with. But its not your fault, these pups are just - they shouldn't be here yet, you know?"
"Yeah," Michael sighed, wiping at his eyes viciously for a minute. "Just gotta believe in him, right?"
"Exactly. And I guess he has a very good guardian angel looking out for him," Daniel murmured with a small smile, and whilst he'd never believed in Heaven before, he damn sure hoped Lando had an angel looking out for him now.
AHHH PLLSSS THE FEELSSSS
poor Michael missing Lara so much and feeling guilty about how much he hated Lando at first and how he cant seem to take care of him properly with so much going wrong! And Daniel just trying to help him so much and trying to be there for him while they deal with the tiny pups that surprised them so early.
And Lara as guardian angel! Pls she would be so proud of Lando and so glad Michael isnt completely alone in this!! Look Lando is such a sweetheart that obviously his momma must have been too, so sweet and loving and staying with Michael for love even if her family doesnt like it!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!! Thank you!!!!!

House of the Rising Sun
(Chibs x OC. My first Chibs fic and...I tried me best with the Scottish slang so advance apologies for the efforts. Let me know what y’all think and I’ll get more of it posted here. Still WIP but I have two chapters completed.)
~There is a house in Charming town, They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl Cuz God I know I'm one.~
"Shit. Fuck. No no no." The girl behind the wheel cried as if it would help to stop the inevitable. The vehicle sputtered and jumped trying to make the most of the last drop of gasoline in her vehicle until it rolled to the open patch of desert road nearby just off Interstate 5.
"You've got to be kidding me." The voice from the passenger seat. "Didn't we just put like 30 bucks in this "eco-friendly" machine?!"
"Uggggh I knew I should have gotten the SUV instead." And finally the last sputter confirmed the two's fears. Stranded on the stretch of highway and it wasn't busy for this early in the morning.
"Well, Gabe lets at least hope for cell service." The driver picked up her phone and sighed in relief as she saw four bars of service. "One tiny miracle of hope."
"Well the closest tow service for us is the Teller-Morrow garage. A few miles up in the little town of Charming. Huh, I wonder if it still lives up to its name." She chuckled. "Do the honors of calling the boys to our rescue, Kat?"
"On it." Kat dialed the number on her phone and stepped outside the car just so she could look for a landmark nearby.
The phone rang through the garage but inside the office, it was finally answered by boss lady herself, Gemma Teller.
"Teller-Morrow, how can I help ya?" She replied almost empathetic yet flatly.
"Hi, I'm trying to get in touch with a tow truck. My car ran out of gas off Interstate 5 near a few miles up from the Charming town exit." Kat sounded exasperated at the other end of the line.
"Oh sweetheart, how long you been out there? You sound distressed." She replied.
"Not long luckily but it's already scorching out here on me and my sister."
"Alright, I'll send the boys with a truck. One second." Gemma reassured "Boys, we got a pair of girls stranded on the highway!" Gemma stuck her head out the door, "They need some gas to get to town or just take the truck and pull them here."
"On it, boss lady. Danny boy! Let's go, gottae pair of lovelies stranded and it's not gentlemen of us ta leave em there!" The older man said while climbing into the drivers seat of the tow truck near the entrance of the garage.
"Here. In case they need something cold." Gemma handed off two bottles of water from her mini fridge of the office. Dan grabbed them as he was jogging through the garage and rushed into the seat as the other man started it up and headed out in a hurry.
~
Mirages played tricks on their minds but honestly the black leather interior of her Kia made it hotter than it was outside. Thankful for them having their belongings with them, Kat felt no shame as she grabbed a pair of denim shorts and red spaghetti strap tank top from her clothes stuffed in the trunk.
"What you doing?! We're on the highway!" Gabe exclaimed as her sister climbed in the backseat.
"And I'm dying in these damn jeans and nice blouse I had planned for the job interview in Charming ironically." Kat shut the door and went about her spur of the moment change of clothes.
"I told you to wait until we got to the room rented for the night to change for the interview but nooooo." Gabe happily leaned against the car in a white off-the-shoulder sundress that swayed in the very light breeze.
"Shut it. Ahhh." Kat felt a refreshment from the breeze when she hopped out in her change of clothes and pulled her flats back on her feet. "Now I can survive."
"And give everyone who passes a glance of the assets no doubt." Gabe snorted as she dodged a smack from her sister.
A rumbling engine caught their attention as they saw a tow truck approaching in the distance. Relief flooded the girls as they wouldn't hopefully miss the schedule they had by much. The tow truck rumbled past slowly and the men inside the cab were not disappointed by what they seen near the car. The older man pulled the truck up and backed it near the car before shutting the truck off and sharing a glance with the younger man.
"Boyo, didja see them bonnies?" He mumbled almost like an excited teenager. "How's a lass like that all way out here?"
"The redhead is gorgeous man. We must absolutely be gentlemen to such exotic women of their caliber." Dan spoke while catching a glimpse in the side mirror angled just right at Gabrielle. "Wow."
"Good ta know ye won't be catching the attention of the dark haired one. Alright, straighten yaself up and let’s go." The older man got out first and shut the door with Dan following suit on the other side.
"Holy." Gabrielle mumbled softly while leaning up from the car, straightening up to get a good look of Dan. Kat, on the other hand found herself very curious about the other walking up to the car and was surprised at just how attractive he was to her eyes.
"Morning, ladies." Dan piped up as he and the other man walked around the truck. "Bit of car trouble I see?"
"Yeah, thought we put enough gas in at our last stop, it was full and now it's empty. I do not understand it at all." Kat crossed her arms in irritation as she leaned against the car.
"That's a sin, ya sure it's just the gas run out, lass?" The older man spoke and Kat was so glad she leaned against the car because the accent nearly made her knees buckle. ‘A Scottish dream come true' She thought as she looked over.
"I hope it's just out of gas because I just drove this car off the lot three days ago in Lodi.." She bit her cheek in annoyance that it could possibly be worse than no fuel in the car.
"Naw worries, lass. We get ye right and give it a look at the shop." The older man said, "This is Dan and I'm Filip but ye can call me Chibs."
"Katherine and this is my sister, Gabrielle. We appreciate you coming to our rescue today." Kat thought she sounded a little too appreciative but smiled anyways when he gave her a wink and it made her stomach flood with butterflies.
"We'll load the car up and then you ladies can hop in the front with us okay?" Dan smiled, knowing it was either gonna have Katherine in Chibs lap and he drive or Gabrielle in his lap in the passenger seat. The girls replied with a nod and stepped up near the front of the truck to let them do their job and exchanged giggles and glances.
"Sister, he's grey." Gabrielle teased at her sister quietly.
"No he's experienced and I'm older, it's not bad to look." She giggled while looking around the truck to see him controlling the wench and bending over to make sure the car was secured on the truck. "Salt n pepper they call it."
"It's the accent driving you bonkers right now." She snorted.
"Aye, that it is." She heard a snort and louder laughter from her sister because she saw him standing by the door with a grin.
"Ye dannae wannae stay out here in the hot sun do ye?" Chibs said while opening the door for them with a cheeky grin. Kat sheepishly glared at her sister as she climbed into the cab and occupied the seat in the middle while Dan hopped up in the passenger seat.
"Afraid you're gonna have to sit on my lap, love." Gabrielle studied his face for a moment before rolling her eyes as if she were annoyed by the thought but secretly smiled as she climbed in and comfortably occupied the vacant spot on his lap. Once the door was closed she leaned back with a little relief of the tension she felt right then and there. Chibs climbed in and they all squished a bit which Kat did not mind at all as he pulled around on the highway and headed for the town they hadn't seen in years.
~
Thirty minutes later, the tow truck was pulling up into the parking lot of the Teller-Morrow Auto shop and Samcro clubhouse next-door. The girls looked up and their eyes were glued to the row of motorcycles outside the shop as well as the group nearby at the picnic tables. As Chibs backed in the car near the garage, him and Dan shared a grin to see how eager they were about the motorcycles. With a halt and a hiss, the car was dropped to the ground slowly and Chibs shut off the truck. He got out on his side and held a hand out to Kat which she smiled as he slowly helped her down from the cab while Dan helped Gabrielle out before he got out himself. The boys went over to talk to the guys in the shop and they hurriedly come out to check on the car while the girls hung back near the tow truck. A few wolf whistles came from the group at the picnic table and made the girls giggle a bit but they ignored their calls.
"That is not little Katherine and Gabrielle Knowles?!" They turned to see the Gemma that Kat had spoken to on the phone.
"Oh whoa. Gemma as in Jax's mom?!" Kat exclaimed as they rushed over to hug her.
"I'm so glad to see you girls, what are you doing back around here?" She greeted the girls gladly.
"Well I had a job interview lined up to come back home. Sister begged us to come back after college finished." Kat smiled, "I dragged Gabrielle back with me."
"I made her go to this because she wanted to be back in Charming. She was miserable out there in the city working herself to the bone for a little pay." Gabrielle corrected her sister.
"So what's the job offer?" Gemma said, pulling the girls with her towards the picnic tables, "Boys, you better be respectful to these girls. I raised them as if they were my own and they turned out better than Tara did thank goodness."
"Sweet baby jesus, look at them all grown up." Bobby greeted them with bear hugs.
"Awww uncle Bobby!" The girls chimed while hugging him happily.
"Those are Tara's sisters?!" Dan mumbled as he stood across the lot at the garage entrance with Chibs. "Jax is gonna be surprised."
"Aye true nuff. Gorgeous lass, though." Chibs said while watching Bobby parade the girls around under his arms.
"Chibs, you've never called a croweater gorgeous. What's in your mind?" Dan said with a grin.
"Come off it, ya cannae say yer naw smitten over Gabrielle?" He smacked him with the clipboard of paperwork in his hand, glancing every so often over at the tables to see Kat laughing with the guys.
"That is not the point." Dan said while crossing his arms and smirking.
"Hey guys, there's a bit of a problem with her car." Their head mechanic got their attention and he led them over to the car. "It was a lemon. Someone sold the poor girl a lemon of a car. Nice exterior and appears good but the head gasket is out. Looks like the engine seized up as she was driving and it's done. No fluids in it either, someone was looking to make a quick penny or out to hurt them."
"Is that so?" Chibs turned Dan around and they walked over where the girls were sitting under the shade with the rest of the group talking up a bit. "Oi, miss Katherine." She looked up and her cheeks turned red at the way her named sounded in his accent.
"Is everything alright?" She went to get up but he sat down beside her and laid the paperwork on the table. "Naw, sweetheart. Whit bizzo diddy get that hunk o' metal from?" He asked curiously. "The engine was blown and ye had naw idea." "What?!" The girls exclaimed in unison. "Lowell gave it the once over and they sold you a lemon. You got a full tank of gas still sweetheart but it wasn't any good." Dan broke the news as he sat down beside Chibs. "Son of a bitch!" She cursed and caught them off guard. "I bought it from Darby's Auto in Lodi, he cut me a deal because he thought I was cute." Her eye twitched in anger and even her sister knew it was rare to see her that mad.
"Darby ye say?" Chibs' expression went from surprised to angry and he glanced at the rest of the boys. "He's still doing that bullshit lot in Lodi?" Another of the guys known as Opie chimed in, "Jax is gonna flip shit." "Speak o the devil." Chibs said as the clubhouse door opened with Gemma and Jax following with a smile for the girls. "Look at you girls, all grown up!" Jax said while happily greeting them both with hugs, "Tara's at work but she'll be happy to know you two made it."
"Jax," Kat started with her pouty face up at him and a soft whine "My car's a lemon and some jackass named Darby sold it to me." Chibs watched her with a raised brow and smirking to himself at how easily she can turn on the innocence even if her outfit said otherwise. "Excuse me?" He asked while looking at her, "Darby sold you a lemon?" She nodded, her lower lip still jutted out. "Aye, kiddo. The car's absolute shite and was doomed to be worse than the breakdown on the highway. Could've killed them if it had't." Chibs piped up. "Don't worry, big brother's gonna make it all better." He kissed her forehead, "Chibs, Opie and me are gonna personally see to it that you have personal pick of a new car. That sound good?" She clapped excitedly and hugged him again. "Boys?" "Be my pleasure to kick that fucker's arse." Chibs said with a smirk which made her smile and turn her head shyly. "Could we go inside and cool off for a bit?" Gabrielle fanned herself a bit, "Think I need a drink or two from the amount of dramatic my sister is." Dan laughed. "Come on, Gabrielle. This way." Dan gladly held his arm out and she took it while they went inside and immediately the group started catcalling and teasing which he casually put his hand behind his back and a simple hand gesture for the group while he took her inside the bar area.
"Appreciate it, Dan. It was a little crowded out there." She hadn't honestly stepped in the clubhouse in a long time. There were times when they had family gatherings, the girls would indeed be up here with their sister Tara because of Jax, his one and only Old Lady. Gabrielle scrunched her nose up at some of the scantily clad girls who were starting to head over to talk to Dan but they immediately stopped when he turned at them and shook his head. Gabrielle found this odd but smiled while they sat on two barstools at the end of the counter. "Stupid, fake crow eaters. They come in flocks around here so I apologize about that." Dan patted on the bar for his fellow prospect and best friend Half Sack to pour them a drink. "S'alright. Crow eaters?" She asked. As familiar as she was with the place, she didn't know everything that went on behind these doors. "Oh, right. They are the ever so dumb bottle blond bimbos that are desperate to be a Sons' Old Lady. They'll take what they can get until asked. Usually, 9 times out of 10, they end up being lonely Crow eaters for life." Dan chuckled a bit which made Gabrielle snort. "Wow, good to know." She wrinkled her nose again at the thought that some croweater might have had his way with him and it bothered her more than she let on. "So which one likes you?"  "Ah, hah. A few of em like me but at the end of the day, I let them down and go home alone." He smiles as he sips on his beer. "Really?" She said, not meaning to look as surprised as she did and looked away for a moment. "So you just like the atmosphere here?" "Yeah. Definitely for sure if you're gonna hang around a bit." He grinned as he saw her cheeks redden a bit. "Count me in." She held her glass up to clink hers with his. "Wanna play some billiards?" "Gladly." He took her glass to set it behind the bar and led her over to the table.
The rest of the group flooded into the clubhouse save for Chibs, Jax, Opie and Kat sitting on the picnic tables still. Kat stands up and whines a little while stretching a bit.
"I'm supposed to be at a job interview in an hour but I wanna go pick out my car." Kat says, pouting like she could get away with being a bit of a brat around them. "Whir's it at, lass?" Chibs asked. "Sweet Mayhem, the new bakery that came into town recently. I'm gonna be a real sweetbutt." She giggled which got the boys laughing a bit. "You better watch it cuz you might sweet talk Chibs here into a ride on his bike, sis." Jax wiggled his brows cuz he could already see the blush creeping on her cheeks. "Awww, Opie you owe me ten bucks. Told you she still had a crush on him." Opie grumbled a bit while digging his wallet out.  "Whit ye like, love. I can drive ya to the interview." He offers with a dimply smile. "Well I will have to go change first, all our stuff is in that hunk of rolling storage over there." She frowns at the car in the lot. "Allow me tae show the lass a place tae change yer clothes." Chibs stood up and held an arm out for her to freshen up a bit. "I'm gonna have to put a leash on you boys with the girls back in town." Jax said with a laugh as him and Opie went to find Clay to let him know what happened with the car.
"I'm going to my interview, sis. You gonna be okay here at the clubhouse?" Kat, freshly changed in a nice white off the shoulder blouse, denim capris and white flats, comes around the bar talking to her sister. Chibs smiled at the change of her outfit, a little impressed. Sure, she looked gorgeous to him in her outfit of choice before but she cleaned up nicely and he wouldn't mind looking at that more often than not. "Dan's offered to drive me to the hotel to check in for us and all that. Then there's a little carnival for charity down at the fairgrounds so we're gonna go spend the afternoon there." "The rest of the Sons and ladies will be down after we settle the problem with Darby." The booming voice startled the girls and they turned to see Clay with Jax and Opie. "Can't believe you girls grew up so fast." Clay shared a grin as they hugged him as well despite him being the most intimidating of all. "Dan, you keep Gabrielle watched over down at the festival." "Yes sir." He pulled her under his arm as they decided to leave since her sister would be. "We'll use my truck to take the stuff to the hotel and then come back for the bike." "Ooooh." Gabrielle grinned while shuffling out the door with him. "And Chibs, I don’t know if Darby's guys won't be lurking around Charming but look out for her." Clay and Chibs shared a handshake as a silent promise that he'd protect Kat. "Onit, boss." He turns to her, a slight sparkle in his eyes. "Ye ready to ride with ol' Chibs?" He holds out a spare helmet for her. "Thank you." She smiles while taking it and walking ahead towards the door while putting the helmet on. "C'mon old man and show me a good time." "Sweet Jesus, this lass is a dream." He said which got all the boys laughing as he followed after her.
~ Clay, Opie, Jax and a couple of others from the club were slowly rolling up to the auto lot in Lodi a couple hours later to take care of the wrong done to you. With a stop in formation, they all shut their engines off as the ball, sad excuse for a man came out the door of the building where he ran his so called business.
"Clay Morrow, to what do I owe this visit?" He spat with a malicious smile. "You sold a lemon to one of our girls that could have killed her. She broke down and it's at our shop right now." Clay spoke in his gruff tone. "Now I hope we don't have to result in violence to make it right." "I don't sell anything to a croweater." He snorted. "She's not a croweater, she's family." Jax spoke up, "Katherine, Tara's little sister. Bought a car a few days ago." "...." Darby went silent for a moment before hanging his head with a sigh of defeat. "Didn't realize that was here. Wow, she grew up." He rubbed the back of his head with a sigh. "No fights, no violence, just take your pick from the side of the lot that is good." He notions over to the right side of the lot. "Pleasure doing business, Darby. We'll bring her by and let her take her pick." Clay smirked triumphantly and at once, the engines roared again and one by one they left the parking lot with Darby looking pissed off as he went back inside.
He threw a tool across the shop making the whole team look up. He slammed the door to his office and sat down, rubbing his face before picking up the phone and dialing a number. "It's Darby. They made it to Charming despite the car." He spoke into the phone. "Good, now all that's left to do is to ruin them." The voice cackled at the end as the line went dead.

Hopper pulls up to the library, thankful to get a spot up front. He steps out of the vehicle and makes his way inside, Powell behind him.
Hopper takes off his hat as he enters the building, making sure to send a big smile to the librarian.
"Hey, Marissa. How you doin'?"
The disapproving look on Marissa's face never left as she spoke.
"You have a lot of nerve showing up here."
"What?"
"You could have at least called, said, 'Marissa! Hey, it's not gonna work out. Sorry, I wasted your time. I'm a dick.'"
Powell was unsure of what to do; he looked from Marissa to Hopper, waiting.
Hopper only stares ahead for a moment, unsure of what to say. Finally, with a subtle smirk, he mutters,
"Yep."
She looks to him, shaking her head expectantly. He seemed at a loss for words again as he shook his head.
"I'm sorry. Uh... Maybe we could go out again next week?" He offers, hoping for the best. She slowly turns her head to Powell and gives him a 'is he for real?' look. In turn, Powell slowly looks over to Hopper awkwardly. Hopper, already knowing he chose his words poorly, visibly cringed, and was eager to change the subject.
"Newspapers? You guys got newspapers around here?"
Marissa had shown them over to the filing cabinet and started pulling out drawers, naming the selections.
"We have the New York Times, the Post, all the big ones. Organized by year and topic. You can find the corresponding microfiche in the reading room." She briefly gestures behind her.
"Okay, we're looking for anything on the Hawkins National Laboratory."
"Well, shouldn't you be looking for that missing kid?"
"Yeah." He states as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "We are."
She nods her head, suspicious.
"Uh, so, why don't you start with the Times, and we'll check out the Post."
Marissa scoffs and looks behind her to Powell, unsure if he's serious. She turns back to Hopper and lets out a soft 'hmph!' before strutting away. Powell steps forward and lowers his voice in a questioning tone.
"The librarian?"
Hopper shrugs wildly before diving into the drawers of files.
The two men had gathered a handful of files and set to work in the other room. Each at their own microfiche, reading every column.
Hopper scanned another column that caught his attention.
'ALLEGED EXPERIMENTS, ABUSE' by T. Bridges.
"Terry Ives' legal case against embattled research scientist Dr. Martin Brenner suffered another setback today when the district attorney's office formally refused to press criminal charges against Brenner, his fellow researchers, assistants, or the project's sponsors, citing lack of evidence. Local law enforcement executed a search..."
Next column.
'MKULTRA EXPOSED' by T. Bridges
"The trust of the American people has been shaken to its core as a special inquiry into a covert CIA operation, code-named MK ULTRA, has exposed the extensive details about that which has been haunting the nation for the past decade. Six subjects have come forward..."
This particular column was accompanied by a negative of seven people. Five of which were slightly disheveled, in hospital gowns. A man in a turtleneck and blazer stood obediently in the back. A man in a fancy suit and tie, holding a clipboard stood front and center. A man with whom Hopper guessed to be Brenner.
Next slide.
'DR. MARTIN BRENNER NAMED IN LAWSUIT' by A. Ward - Staff Writer
"Senior researcher Doctor Martin Brenner and seven other staff researchers have been named in a new lawsuit filed today on behalf of former federal research study participant, Terry Ives. Dr. Brenner's attorney in conjunction with the Department of Energy has asked the circuit court to seal the details of the lawsuit until the attorney general's office can determine that no federal..."
Hopper found himself more engrossed and confused as he read.
"...her newborn daughter for scientific research. Following an investigation, the district attorney has already declined to press criminal kidnapping charges against the research facility and staff, citing lack of evidence. Dr. Brenner's attorney called Ms. Ives' allegations baseless and tragic, citing Dr. Brenner's excellent reputation, his twenty recent peer-reviewed scientific papers..."
The next slide was a short column with another accompanying photo. Although the picture was small and blurry, it wasn't hard to see the grief-stricken features on the young woman.
TERRY IVES SUING - 'They took my daughter' by Benjamin Buck
"After the district attorney's office declined to press criminal charges citing lack of evidence, local resident Terry Ives is not giving up her search for justice for herself and her daughter, and this morning filed a lawsuit against research scientist Dr. Martin Brenner and his staff.
Ms. Ives' suit seeks unspecified damages against Dr. Brenner and his facility, alleging physical abuse, sleep deprivation, malnourishment, and multiple allegations of kidnapping; both attempted and successful..."
Hopper sighed, trying his best to swallow all of this new information.
'What the hell has been happening in this damn town?'
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
Three. One. Five. The numbers on the strange new bracelet read three one five.
Thankfully, El was able to find her way back outside by the large telephone pole where Mike told her to meet them. But El was still nervous. She just hoped no one had spotted her.
El couldn't find it in her ability to stay still. She couldn't stop pacing and she was subconsciously shaking out her hands, her nerves shot.
'What if someone saw her?'
She eagerly checked the bracelet, muttering aloud to herself.
"Three-one-five. Three-one-five. Three-one-five..." her voice turned soft as her confidence wavered. The only thing that was able to take her attention away from the bracelet was the familiar sound of meowing next to her.
Shocked, she looked over to see a scrawny orange cat staring at her from the other side of the fence. It began to meow again and panic and guilt crashed over her as once again another terrible memory resurfaced.
- 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 -
The white cat in the cage before Eleven let out a terrible hiss at her. Her head began to shake as she strained her ability. The combination of the cat growling and hissing and the frantic beeping of the machines was enough to push her even further.
She didn't want to. She never wanted to hurt this poor creature. But she knew that if she didn't, she would have to face the consequences. She would have to go back there. The cat gave out another deep growl and Eleven tried to the best of her ability not to cry. Not to break.
The cat began snarling, and it quickly turned to whimpers of pain. Eleven was freely crying now as she looked between the frightened cat and Papa. She gave one final look at the cat before yanking the wires off her head in defeat.
No. She couldn't.
She wouldn't.
She looked at Papa defeated. She shook her head in defiance, though her sobbing gave away her true feelings. He only stared at her in disapproval.
"No! No!" She struggled and kicked. She fought back with all her might while Papa stood at the end of the hallway. Doing nothing.
"Papa! Papa! Papa! Papa! Papa!" She screamed her throat raw as the men dragged her away, yet as always Papa only watched it happen.
"No!" Her shrieks grew more violent as she neared the room.
She couldn't go back in there.
She couldn't.
The men tossed her inside and began closing the door.
She wouldn't.
Eleven stood to her feet and before they could close the steel door, she threw it open in a fit of rage, her attention quickly shifting to one of the men doing this her. In the very next instant, his back was thrown into the ceramic just behind him. His limp body slipped to the floor, leaving a large hole in the tile.
The second man spared a second to look before turning to her to try and restrain her.
Before he could even step foot in the room, he was dead on the floor, his neck snapped. All with the flick of her head.
Overwhelmed with exhaustion, she collapsed against the wall, her nose and ears bleeding.
Papa appeared. He took one look at the cracked wall, to the collapsed man, and then at Eleven. Yet she couldn't move. She was completely drained, all she could do was stare at him. He slowly stepped towards her, staring at her.
She looked up at him in fear of what would happen next, and what did was not something she could have anticipated. He slowly reached his hands out, cupping her face. Sobs wracked her body, and he stared at her in awe.
"Incredible."
He reached down, hooking an arm under her legs, th arried her like an infant. He carried her out of the room and down the hallway, staring at her sobbing form as if he hadn't been the one to cause it.
- 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 -
"El!"
El turned her head to see Mike, Y/n, Lucas and Dustin. They were walking their bikes across the muddy grass in her direction.
Mike looked to her concerned as he, as well as the others, turned their bikes around.
"You okay?"
Relieved to see her friends, she nodded her head.
Mike gave the seat of his bike a few pats.
"Hop on. We only have a few hours."
Hesitantly, she walked forward. But she complied nonetheless and got on Mike's bike, and the five of them peddled off.
|| 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐏𝐎𝐕 ||
The five us were walking our bikes through the woods. Dustin and Lucas were in the back, while Mike and El were just a few steps in front of me. El was looking around as she walked and suddenly I felt her eyes on me. I suddenly became very self-conscious of my cut.
I got it to stop bleeding eventually, but I don't know how I will ever explain this to Mom. She worries so easily. And, I don't think I have ever had a cut this big but I'll survive. My thoughts are cut short when I become very aware of the fact that El had fallen back next to me and was now looking at me with concern.
"Why did they hurt you?" Her voice came out very soft but was laced with concern.
"Huh?" I asked surprised.
El extended her arm out and pointed to my chin. I looked down, upset with how things went today.
"Oh, that. I uh, well... I was tripped. By this mouth breather, Troy."
Her face scrunched up in confusion.
"'Mouth breather?'"
"Yeah. You know, a dumb person,"
I suddenly grew quiet, and El noticed.
"Y/n, are you okay?"
I paused. "Yeah. Yeah, it'll be ok." I said.
I knew what she meant but I didn't think it was noteworthy to bring up how I was feeling.
"Y/n." I turn to look at her and she is giving me a knowing look. "Friends tell the truth."
I began to fight tears that were stinging my eyes, but I wouldn't let them fall.
"I just... I just miss him. Will, I mean. And the things Troy was saying..." I began feeling myself get worked up again at the mere thought of it. "They were awful. Truly awful, and I just... I'm tired. And worried. And I just want to find my friend."
There was suddenly a somber silence over the group that was quickly broken by El's soothing tone.
"Y/n," she said sternly, pulling my eyes to her. There was a soft demand behind her eyes, willing my gaurd down. "I understand."
I looked at her, a grateful smile on my features and my voice came out in a weak whisper.
"Thank you, El."
She gave me a warm smile in return. It very much resembled the one I gave her the first night we met. It was at this moment I knew. I had just found myself a very unique and powerful friendship; one that stood out from my friendship with the party.
El and I have a lot more in common than I thought.

Long Fall Into Oblivion (Ezra x reader)
Tumblr media
(header by sirtadcooper - check out the whole beautiful set here.)
Rating: Mature.
Pairing: Ezra (post-Prospect film) x f!reader
Warnings: Non-explicit sex. Some swears maybe (think there’s a f*ck in there somewhere, my GOODNESS). A lot of gooey, syrupy, soft fluffety fluff. Author attempts at writing Ezra dialogue. A lot of chewy prose.
A/N: I can’t believe I’m posting this, but here goes. I love Ezra. He is a man of questionable morality and an insufferable tongue and I really shouldn’t. But I really do. I just wanted to give him a try. I’ve softened him up here, putting a few years on him so maybe he’s fluffed up some since the events in the film. Also I just ignored the fade or assumed that aurelac mining was still happening because scarcity/demand. Doesn’t matter. Just wanted to go exploring.
Summary: You take a job as an aurelac prospecting trainee and Ezra shows you the ropes. You’re gonna fall in love with him. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
TAGLIST: you can always request to be on the taglist for this or any of my work. If you’d like to be on taglists for upcoming fic, please sign up here –> TAGLIST

________________
Bakhroma is one of the smallest gas giants in the sector, but as you stand on the surface of the Green Moon, it dominates the entire horizon, pulling your focus, threatening to engulf everything around it. You almost feel sorry for the lush moon as you walk through its undergrowth, so gentle and full of beauty, destined many years after you’re gone to give its life to her.
A moon is an orbiting admirer, and what is an orbit but a long fall to oblivion?
There’s a painful, sour ache in your heart as you walk back to the camp in twilight, watching the back of Ezra’s helmet bob along in front of you. You’d spent two days digging that claim only to find the weakest aurelac nest you’ve seen yet, only three viable nodes. You’d dug through one of them by accident and completely melted another like an incompetent fool. Kevva’s ass, you were such a disappointment. Three months in the Green and you still can’t cut a blister out properly. Not even once.
Ezra’s shoulders are wide and tense, his one hand splayed out as he walks, running over the tops of the tall ferns, catching one every now and then only to rip the top away, twirl it between his gloved fingers and toss it impatiently aside.
The other two members of your team headed out on a sling this morning, another two will be arriving in a few days. And you wonder if Ez regrets just not cutting his losses and leaving with them, or at least sending you back in exchange for another kip.
You think about shifting through the comm channels, hoping that he’s chattering away in one of them, switched without your knowledge, but it’s a lost cause. You can hear him breathing on the channel between you. It’s not often Ezra has nothing to say.
________________
You thought your father was leaving you an inheritance. It’s not the reason you took care of him through his illness, but you’d dropped everything to be back home with him through his final months. In a way, it was a blessing, a reason to quit the Dasha factory and the terrible working conditions there, come back home and focus on your dad, relive good memories, just spend time. The reconnection lifted your heart, but his death sank it low again. When you learned he had nothing to leave you but a small house and some old vehicles, you sold what you could and traded in the rest.
Then you had nothing. No family, no job, little savings, questionable future. It almost broke your spirit. But the last few months with your father rekindled your love of him as he told you about his years in the Fringe, mining and prospecting. And your heart had said, “what the hell, let’s try that.” So you listened.
It took some time to track down the right inroads, but you were able to find some ads for prospecting teams, in particular those who were willing to take on members in training for a re-distributed cut. With all provisions included--other than suit and gear, which your father’s inheritance neatly covered--it seemed like just as good of a deal as any, and an adventure to boot.
But the reality was, every team you met with was full of hardened men, and while you were not a soft Central woman, you also weren’t overly versed in weaponry and didn’t know if you could defend yourself out in the Fringe against attack if things got crusty.
You were just about ready to admit defeat when you walked into yet another conference bunker and found your match. The first thing you noticed was that he was standing when you arrived, waiting for you politely rather than manspread at the table. Second were his eyes. Deep, brown, and sad. Maybe sad was the wrong word, certainly it seemed by the lines in his face, possibly by the missing arm, that he’d seen enough sadness, but toward you, it read more as concern. You wouldn’t know it until later when he confessed his feelings about this first meeting, but he was worried you wouldn’t choose him. Ezra had a hell of a time hiring partners. He may have been one of the longest-working aurelac diggers out there, but young kippers saw his greying beard and seasoned diggers saw his lacking arm and they all tended to turn around and walk out before he even said hello. So he’d tried to put himself out there as a trainer, show that he had something more to offer.
It didn’t hurt his feelings when you admitted to him later that those qualities were exactly why you chose him. He seemed the opposite of threatening. And his eyes were bright when he smiled at you. With his thrumming baritone and his Fringe twang and his mixed deck of mosaic words, he had a way of speaking that felt like a fluffy blanket curling around you, your brain vibrating with comfort at every new monologue. He was eccentric and perhaps a little jarringly rough in his humor at times, but there was something about him that you trusted immediately, even though you’d come to learn later you probably shouldn’t have if you were being overly cautious.
Not that your judgement ever came to detriment. Not that he ever proved you wrong that way. Not when it came to you. But the man was dangerous when he had to be in a way you hadn’t initially picked up on.
________________
You hadn’t been out in the Green two weeks before you looked up from the bottom of a dig hole to see Ezra standing over you with a thrower.
“You get down and you stay down, understand?”
“Ez? What--”
“I said stay down! Do not make me waste words on mere repetition!” The fuzzy blanket of his voice replaced suddenly by a snarling, snapping brush wolf, a quick change hitting you like a slap in the ear.
There’d been pops and whizzes as shots rang through and you did as your trainer said, face down, the view of your visor giving you nothing but dirt. Your helmet was a chorus of quick breathing from both of you and sweat rolled down your neck as you begged the eyes of Kevva to look down upon your partner. When the crossfire faded, you’d heard Ezra stalk away. Then there were a couple more shots. Then more footsteps returning.
“You are permitted to stand, trinket. All is well as it can be for us. But not so much for our dearly departed friends.” These words were as soothing as much as his previous ones had burned, and he simply went back to working at the dig at hand as if he’d just come back from taking a leak. It wasn’t until you left the site that evening that you tramped past two rotting raiders, gaudily outfitted with broken face shields, left to let the Green take them.
Ezra whistled as he stepped over them, stopping only to harvest their filters and munition rods, which he tossed your way to stow in your pack, and then continued lazily down the path toward camp. Just another day on the job.
He may be a little peculiar and not someone to trifle with, he may have just killed two people without remorse or further comment, but his lack of reassuring words told you that this was just part of the deal. You wear the suit, you use the air scrubber in the tent, you follow the landing pod instructions as written, and you defend yourself against those who wish to harm you. Survival by any and all means is paramount, mundane, and something he has no qualms with on any level.
There was something deep down inside of you that instinctually pulled you to follow him, not just down the literal path before you, but whatever path Ezra chose to wander.
________________
Before you’d left the station with him, he’d taken you to a thrower range to gauge your skill which was decent in theory, but dismal compared with what he could do. No matter, he still patiently taught you how to properly clean and charge a weapon and the best way to breathe and pull the trigger; “like you’re taking hold of a man’s...well... Just go easy and firm.” He suggested you should come and practice every day before lift off and then hope to Kevva that you didn’t have to rely too heavily on it.
“If I find myself in a coffin of my own suit, then feel free to defend yourself as a final means of preservation. Otherwise, when it comes down to shots fired, best to let me do the dirty work. Might as well keep the blood where the blood has been.”
You’d been a little nervous about sharing a freighter pod alone with him, but Ezra was...well, not so much a gentleman as just a comfortable soul.
He always waited until you were hungry to eat, thinking it rude to eat alone in front of you. He never moved around the pod while you were sleeping, content to keep still with a book in his cot. And if you couldn’t sleep, he was always willing to read to you from whatever impossibly dense old world classic he was digging through for the umpteenth time, letting his voice come up from the deeps and pull you gently under. If you asked permission to turn on the radio, he’d ask you “why Isn’t it on yet, woman,” quietly tolerating your taste in harsh and gleeful babblecore pshcyopop. In the later days of the journey, he’d even come to dance with you from time to time, although both of you were dismal at it and ended up with you in a fit of giggles. It was a sure-fire way to cure a case of the pouts you carried through from the morning fitness sessions when he beat you at pushups. Again.
When it came to privacy in the tight space, he had a habit of turning away without having to be asked or stopping his stream of talk when you went to change clothes, just happily chattering away until you called the all clear. Although he was not squeamish about his own state of undress, should you happen to catch it by accident. While he was respectful of your privacy, he seemed to need none of his own, but neither did he flaunt anything. You might look up from studying the flight manual to notice he was changing into a fresh pair of compression pants, tugging them on haphazardly with one hand, more concerned with telling you the overwhelmingly disgusting manufacturing process of Bits Bars than his own ass hanging out where you might see it. At least he always changed facing away from you which was a kindness.
Until it wasn’t.
After you realized you’d fallen quietly in love with him--a sudden, soft moment on the Green--then you’d admit only privately to yourself that you wouldn’t mind if you accidentally saw a little more than the occasional shirtless attire he might wear around the tent.
But in the pod, the only part of him that had caught your curiosity was his stump, and you’d known Ezra intensely enough over the past couple of weeks where you knew he wouldn’t take offense. Especially if you asked him the right way.
“Will you tell me a story, Ezra?”
“I feel that it is my duty to do so whether you ask me to or not. Shall I choose, or is there something in particular you would like to hear?”
He was sitting cross-legged on the floor, propped up against his cot, going through his kit, cleaning his gear. You waited until he noticed your lack of answer and looked up to meet your eyes. When he saw that you had put your manual down and were focusing all your quiet attention on him, he stopped his busy work.
When Ezra gives you his attention, it is absolute. When he knows you seriously need something from him, that becomes his immediate main priority and all else can wait. It’s only gotten more intense since that day, but there is a trust that resides between you when you look into his eyes, gathering your words as he waits patiently every time to hear whatever you’re going to request of him. There’s always hope there in his big browns, always something specific he’s waiting for you to ask, and every day you get a little bit closer to understanding what it might be. But until then, any question is a welcome one, any query is met with his wish to provide.
“Will you tell me how you lost your arm?”
At first you thought you may have gone too far, that maybe you insulted him, as his eyebrows peaked together and he looked down at his hand. But then, “That is a tale that may cause you some consternation, trinket. The Green is dangerous and unforgiving, and there were times I may not have been a man worthy of fair opinion.”
“My father was a prospector, you know. I’ve heard stories. Have you ever killed anyone?”
He clicked his tongue and screwed up an eye, causing the thin white scar on his cheek to twist. Then he sighed and returned to your locked gaze. “To be honest, I have. Though I have never done so with pleasure, I have killed in defense and out of desperation, and it was out of dispatching a man in this way that I came to lose the second favorite of all my appendages.”
“Second favorite?”
“Well, it depends what you classify as a limb.” He huffed a small laugh, a spark in his eye, trying to diffuse the harsh subject in his own way.
His leaning into baseness never bothered you. There was something earthy about it, gritty and rough, but never lewd. You rewarded his crassness with a smile. “Do you plan on killing me out in the Green?”
“I would hope my murdering days are behind me, and if they are not, you would see me aim a thrower at everyone but you in the course of my spree. You are under my tutelage, and for that, I owe you a duty of care. That is my word by Kevva.”
“Then tell me the story. I like your stories. I promise not to judge now-Ezra by then-Ezra.”
A dimple formed on his cheek, a punctuation mark framing the approaching anecdote on his lips. “Then I will declare myself absolved of any sin heretofore and regale you with a clean and grateful heart.”
________________
You can see the tent through the trees and you realize with some horror that it’s just you and Ezra for the next few nights. If he’s angry with you, and this is how he is when he’s upset, the silence will be unbearable.
Even that little girl he helped out here years ago was probably more capable than you. You feel so lost in this moment, and it’s only made worse by his silence. You fumble with your communicator and hit the mute just in time to choke on a sob.
This isn’t like you. You’re not one to cry when things get rough. You hardly shed a tear when your father died. But the thought of that just brings another sob and as acting as your own psychologist you realize that you are experiencing some displaced sorrow, the odd need to please the leading male in your life, the one that’s walking ahead of you, away from you. If he’d just turn around and throw you his worn weary smile, if he’d just start up a conversation you’d know that there was hope for you, you’d know you didn’t give up everything to be here in a job you couldn’t hack.
You gotta stop this. Or it’s going to be an uncomfortable night.
Shake it off.
Once you enter the tent, the usual dance happens. Ezra reaches up to turn on the air scrubber and you unhook his filter tube from his helmet. When he turns to you, you pull open the zipper cover on his suit and start his zip for him before lifting his helmet up and off. He can pull the zip the rest of the way, but you generally pull the left collar down for him so he can get his arm out. He’s on his own from there as you turn to fuss with your own gear.
________________
You remember it starting easily enough. He was telling you a story about the breeding habits of the Tokovian Musk Owl and you could see he was having trouble with his suit zipper, yanking at it and trying to look down at it even though it was under his chin and his helmet. Without another hand to keep the fabric taut, the zip didn’t want to release, so you simply batted his hand away and started it for him. He didn’t even stop his yammering, just threw in a “thank you” somewhere in between “could hear them screeching” and “for a fuck.” He’d right out asked you the day before if you wouldn’t mind disengaging the filter tube just because it was delicate and he didn’t want to mangle the expensive part trying to pop it out one-handed day after day. And while he could manage the helmet fine enough, his prominent nose thanked you for a smoother removal for sure.
It wasn’t the only routine dance you’d concocted.
There was the harness dance.
While dig days were excruciating, you always looked forward to helping him attach the harness for his prosthesis--a kind of rigid pole attached to a shovel so you didn’t have to do all the hard digging alone. There were a couple of straps that came around his torso with multiple latches and you’d come to really enjoy wrapping your arms around him to fit the straps on. Sure, you could do the job just as easily from behind, but if you embraced him at the front, he’d usually raise his arm and let it come to rest around your shoulders while you worked. If you let yourself dream, it would be easy to imagine that he might be pressing you into him just a little bit.
And there was the harvesting dance.
On a dig, you were the one to mix the fazer and Ezra did the pour. He fished the sack, you cut the cord. You sliced the outer casing and held it open while he did the extraction. And with the flesh-covered stone, he told you every time to “hold it like you love it” so he could cut away the slippery blister before cleaning the gemstone.
It was a beautiful harmony. And the only way it worked. Because once on every dig he urged you to do a solo extraction, and on every dig, you pierced the blister and lost that stone. And on every dig, he squeezed your shoulder and told you it was a wondrous try, that he was proud of you, and there would always be another turn. There was no sarcasm, no pity, just a warm smile and ceaseless optimism even though you just lost both of you thousands in pay.
These were the first touches, these shoulder squeezes that ran down your arm on the let-go. Sometimes he would just reach out and grab onto you like a pole to help himself up, or he might stumble off balance on uneven ground and without the counterweight of his right arm he’d throw his hand out onto you to steady himself. He wasn’t beyond lightly touching the small of your back to encourage you down a path or to take your next try at a gem pull.
This was all part of something you’ve secretly named the left-handed-lover’s dance. Basically, that you keep on his left whenever you can in case he needs your help or has the inclination to reach for you. It started out as just trying to be a good partner. Then it became a passing hope that it was more than just a friendly bond. But you were both here to do a job. He was here to teach you to be an independent prospector and you were here to assist and learn. That was evident at the end of the day; once you were both in the tent and out of the suits he never touched you, never so much as bumped into you or grazed your hand in passing an item or clapped you on the arm after a good joke.
But out in the field all zipped in and helmets on, there was nothing more natural than his gentle hand guiding you or reaching for your assistance, including the day you realized you loved him.
________________
Before you can turn away to strip off your own coverings, Ezra catches your arm, spinning your face into the light. You try to shake him off, not wanting him to catch your eyes puffy from crying and your cheeks still streaked with tears, but his grip is not so gentle now and he yanks you back around to his stormy glare, chin up, brows low. His intensity paralyzes you, rendering you unable to continue your struggle when he catches your eyes with his.
When Ezra gives you his attention, it is absolute.
His gaze travels back and forth between your eyes, waiting for an explanation, a minute so stringent it breaks you down, dissolves you into the tears you’d tried so hard to hide.
“I’m sorry, Ezra. I really am trying... I don’t know why I’m such a scuffer at this and I know it would only be right to release you from the contract and tell you to send me back but I don’t want you to, I really wanna stay, I really wanna learn and I’m so, so sorry.”
Your words have an immediate effect, softening him, pulling his glare into concern and wonder, his lips parting just the tiniest bit in surprise.
“This is the reason for your heavy mood? You think I am provoked by your proficiency in the field?”
“I crusted up good today and it seems like you’re not happy about it. Just...know that it means so much to me that...I don’t wanna let you down.”
“Oh, trinket, no.” An incredulous huff jumps out of him and his grip on your arm loosens, becomes a splayed warm support behind your shoulder, moving in soothing patterns and you’re instantly relieved that your assumptions were wrong. “You have done no harm in my book. It is not an easy thing to deliver a gem of this ilk into the world unscathed. Your opportunities have been few and scattered and it takes many sticks before a lover becomes a lothario.” He knows the crass humor will make you laugh, knows what to say to lighten your heart, to get you to soften, and bring you into his intimate, conspiratorial mood. “To be perfectly honest, I am selfish to an unrighteous degree, for every gem you burn keeps me in value to you. A worthy sacrifice to guarantee you mightn’t be so quick in your need to fly away from me until your training’s complete.”
This causes a hitch in your breath as you see the welcome turn the conversation he’s taking and you follow the path he’s making for you. “I don’t want to leave you, Ez.”
A smile creeps up one side of his mouth. “Well then I am a happy man. A bargain is struck! Partners it is.”
“Partners it is.”
A moment hangs between you as he rubs his thumb in slow circles on your shoulder. There’s that look in his eye again, the one where he’s waiting for you to ask the question he wants to hear from you. So close now.
Still, you’re unsure. “I guess I’m lucky I found the one person who wants an incompetent partner.”
“No, I do not, nor is it what I have and I must express my objection to your self-debasement. This work is not for the shiny, and you have not once complained about taking on the meat of the digging or the crawl of my schedule.”  His hand comes to your helmet shield and he rakes his thumb across it as if he ached to wipe away one of your staleing tears. “Those bright eyes of yours got a penchant for spotting deposits more skillfully than I could ever manage and that’s not something that can be taught; that’s talent, girl. The blistering?” He shrugs. “Even I can’t manage that without the steady help of your fine hands. You may think that your blunders in education are causing us some financial ruin, but our fortunes are creamy. I assure you, we can afford it.”
That look is still there. He’s waiting. “There’s some ‘us’ and ‘we’ in there, Ez.” Your hands drift to his sides, taking fistfuls of his compression suit top, willing him closer.
The edges of his eyes take on the crinkle you’ve come to find so much comfort in. “So there is.”
You’re almost there. You know what he wants. “Why were you so quiet on the walk back?”
“Because for the next few days we are alone here and I have a mind full of questions I do not know how to ask you.”
“Then let me go first.” A yearning happiness settles in his brown eyes; finally. Finally you’ve found out what it is he needs you to request of him. “If I take this helmet off, are you going to kiss me, Ez?”
His eyes close in contentment and he nods, “Yes. Yes, little jewel. Yes I am, that and more. I hope I have inferred correctly that it is your wish that I do so, because I am in free fall. I feel my orbit ending and my pull to you is complete.”
_______________
“A moon is an orbiting admirer, and what is an orbit but a long fall to oblivion?”
Speculating days were some of your favorite times, just wading through the brush and looking for the telltale signs and shoots of an underlying deposit. Sometimes you came upon nests of strange groundling insects or flowers that only grew in secret. There were treasures underfoot on this poisonous moon, but if you remembered to look up as well, you might find some dangerous beauties there too.
On that day--the one where you finally understood your heart--you’d looked up to find that you were on a cliffside overlooking a valley, the canopy a million different hues of green, the gas giant looming over half the sky in a big pink and orange semi-circle. There was a fallen log that served as a perfect seat for the perfect view and you knew Ezra wouldn’t mind if you stole a few moments to sit and to take it in. It’s just the kind of thing he’d appreciate. And you were proven right when he came up behind you, putting a hand on your shoulder to steady himself as he swung one leg then the other over the log, finding a perch next to you, spouting pretty words through the channel link--soft and low--about moons and orbits and obilvions.
“That glowing beauty is Bakhroma. She is quiet and fierce, made up of the unfathomable and the unknowable, always within sight, but out of reach and untouchable unless one would trade the honor with great sacrifice. She reflects the light that is given to her with a patience that is heretofore untold. And the Green Moon upon which we ride follows where she goes like a lovesick fool, spinning around her in a heady kind of adoration, full of secret treasures buried deep down that will ultimately one day belong to her, falling incrementally over eons until he finally loses himself in her, all his glories gladly forfeit to her welcome and inevitable embrace. Alone but together, seemingly eternal, pulled as one by the laws of a mysterious universe.”
The void that came after those words was filled with the beating of your heart, and you were sure he could hear it through the channel.
When he’d landed there beside you, you’d registered how his hand slid off your shoulder, diagonally down across your back, coming to rest at your waist, his arm draped lightly around you. Natural. Easy. Everything was warm--the colors of the sky, the care with which he kept you close as if to better hear the honey sweetness in his prose, the fire burning in your lungs and neck.
Ezra probably didn’t know that you spoke a little Vayok.
Bakh being the Vayok word for adornment. Ornament, Gem. Roma was a modifier, a diminutive. Small. Dear.
Bakhroma. Sentimental bauble. A little jewel.
In other words, a trinket.
All you wanted to do was sit down to take in the view of an entire world for a few moments, but by the time Ezra took your hand and helped you to your feet, all you saw was him.
________________
The helmet is barely off before his lips are sealed to yours in a press of greed. Even if he can’t form words when he kisses you, he can’t help but express his deep relief in a heartbreaking moan. It’s a fight to release yourself from the suit when he keeps pulling you against him and every time you try to get some space between you to work the zipper, he chuckles into your mouth, enjoying the tease and the struggle. It’s simultaneously frustrating and thrilling and you give in for a few moments just to give him what he seems to want so desperately right now.
Ezra kisses like a man starved for air, long, hard, and full of need, peeling his lips away only to come back for another breath of you until his initial want is slaked and he slows, allows for more time between his taking, his mouth starting to mumble against yours, praising you with pet names, telling you how perfect you are to him, how long he’s “fought against my more dubious natures to respect your womanly virtues and take them only when you could see in me a man worth bestowing them on.”
You’re able to use his weakness for monologuing to turn around in his vice-like embrace, finally freeing yourself of the suit and he takes the opportunity to drawl more pretty words in your ear, warning you that “I’m afraid I have been enamored of you overly long and may be extra eager in my attentions. So you just say the word if you need a slow down, gentle one, and I will do my best to comply. Although I will admit it will be a difficult endeavor indeed as I feel I am entering your atmosphere and nothing might quell this burn but finding some drowning place to land.”
Your first impression of him was of a man whose age and temperament and body would not be able to overpower you.
Your first impression was wrong.
Of course, it helps that you are willing.
It doesn’t take long for him to strip you down, and then himself. To kiss you down onto the floor. To find exactly where you like to be touched most and how long it takes for you to break from it. He has so many words for you, so many praises to sing about every part of you that is round or soft or wet, comparing you to things that are sweet and plush or celestial and holy. And when you take his favorite limb in hand--as wondrous as the rest of his body--and guide it to its fit, he plunders and harvests all you have to give him, filing you with himself, for as long as you call for it, as long as you let him. He loves you like he speaks to you: rough and drawn out, full of beautiful tangents and meandering plotlines, but in the end it is beautiful and fulfilling; you may be just a little bit confused how you got to the ending, but you’re completely in awe.
When you lay breathing heavy, staring but not seeing the ceiling of the tent, your consciousness seemingly lifted to see through it to the stars, to the glowing face of Bakhroma, you run hands through rough-chopped hair on a head laying on your chest. He’s listening to your heartbeat, waiting for it to slow down so he can start again. The air is thick--even the air scrubber can’t keep up with all your humidity--and there’s a halo around each bulb of the string lights just barely illuminating the darkness.
“How long, Ez?”
“Hm?”
“How long have you been waiting for that.”
“Most likely since the day you walked into my interview. I am a man of simple wants and you had all the right parts for my preferences.”
“For real, Ez.”
He tipped his head up to find you. “What you ask has many true answers, and I stand by the first. I have no qualms telling you of my weakness for a pretty succulence and a kind smile the likes of which you possess. But if you are asking when I knew I would have it, well, that may have been the first day you danced. Or when you asked me to read you to sleep. Or when I understood I wouldn’t let those bastard raiders get near enough to take their turn at your qualities when I had not had them myself. Or when you finally saw me as a viable person to drape your affections on; maybe it was that day too.”
“When I finally saw you as....”
“I have read many tomes and verses but none so full of beautiful passages as your face that day on the cliff. There is a difference of knowing and being. I knew the feel of your pull that day, but found I’d been in orbit all along.”
How he can live this way, twist everything into a tossed away poem...it should be exhausting. Yet you feed off it. You breathe it like air.
After another long cycle of frenzied entanglement and violent euphoria, you ask Ezra if he’d like to move to a cot, maybe get some sleep. “I’m not sure if I’ll be able to walk to the dig tomorrow morning,” you confess.
“No need to worry about tomorrow,” he says, wapping his arm around you and dragging you back to him, grumbling into your ear. “We are the only prospectors in this sector and the aurelac will wait. Until our new compatriots arrive, we are officially on hiatus. Recreational mining only. Restricted to the confines of this tent. By order of your supervisor. In the interest of more precious treasures. And I intend to strike it rich.”
“Well. I’m here to assist. And learn.”
“When it comes to this dig, trinket, you are more than competent. I am no longer your trainer. Partners it is.”
“Partners it is.”
The new contract is struck, signed and sealed in kissing and in touch and a long, slow fall into inevitable oblivion.

“It’s probably best to go back to the breach, right?” you decided. “We know it’s there so it’s the best way to get back.”
“_____ has a point,” Wonwoo shrugged.
“Alright, everyone head back to the hole -- and don’t get split up,” Seungcheol stated before deciding to take the lead.
“Okay, but if I see one of those glorified Chuck E. Cheese mascots coming toward us, I’m leaving all of you behind,” Seungkwan muttered as he followed with the group.
All of you were glancing around trying to keep an eye out for the animatronics, while also trying to quickly and quietly make your way back to the way you’d gotten into the park. You kept mentally kicking yourself for convincing your friends to come here. If it wasn’t for you, you wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place. You were just lucky everyone was still here...
The gates were starting to come into view, and you felt relief begin to course through you. Your legs were starting to move faster on their own, just wanting to get out of this living nightmare.
Seungcheol shooting his arms out to stop the group was what had you skid to a stop. He whispered loudly for everyone to get down behind the nearby shrubs and two trash bins. The fourteen of you poked your heads around to see what had gotten him to act like this, and your heart sank at what you saw
Serenity was blocking the hole in the fence.
“Fuck,” Jeonghan hissed.
“We’re gonna die here...” Seokmin whispered, but Wonwoo was quick to comfort him.
“What’s the plan now?” Hansol wondered.
“I know it’ll risk us going to jail or something,” Jihoon began, “but I think it’s time we just cave and call someone.”
“No, I’m not going back there!” Seungkwan whispered intensely.
Your eyebrows furrowed as your turned to look at him, “Excuse me?”
“I’d rather get arrested than get murdered,” Mingyu insisted. “At least we know we’ll be safe and alive in jail.”
You made a face, “Will we, though?”
“Listen,” Hansol interrupted as he pulled out his phone, “I’ll just call my parents -- they’re really chill. And worse case scenario, they just lecture us.”
But as he went to make the call, all his phone did was beep at him like the line was busy. He took the phone away from his ear and looked down, furrowing his eyebrows.
“We had service all night, right?” he asked.
“Yeah...?” Joshua replied.
“Well now I don’t for some reason,” he said, turning his phone screen to show his friends.
Mingyu’s eyes widened, “You’re kidding.”
Then everyone, including you, were taking out their phones and checking for service. Just like Hansol, you had no bars.
Unfortunately, everyone else was in the same boat.
Now, Seokmin was on the verge of tears, “We’re going to die here!”
“Don’t get hysterical yet,” Minghao told him. “There’s gotta be a way out of this. Even if we have to wait around until morning, we can probably out-run these hunks of metal.”
“Y’know, I heard a friend of a friend snuck in here once,” Soonyoung began. “Some dude Changkyun knows. He said there’s apparently some sort of underground exit under the food court.”
“At this point, we’ll have to try anything,” Wonwoo sighed.
“So back to the food court?” Seungcheol practically whined.
You took a deep breath, “Unfortunately, yeah.”

“Does anyone even remember where the hole in the fence is?” you asked.
Everyone either gave you blank stares or shook their heads. You let out a sigh.
“Alternate way it is,” Minghao shrugged.
“Let’s just hang here until someone thinks of something,” Seungcheol suggested. “We’re all here, and I think those things are still hanging around wherever we were before. It’ll take a while before we see them again.”
So the fourteen of you hung out at the merry-go-round. Most of you leaned up against the horses or found yourselves sitting down on them. A few of you sat on the two steps of the platform. Chan and Wonwoo were sitting in one of the carriages that most families or parents sat in. All of you were scrolling on your phones or looking at someone else’s phone, trying to research anything about Caratland that might help you find a way out. Maybe a map or a blueprint or something might come up.
Suddenly, the ride jerked. You almost fell over onto Junhui as the ride began turning slowly, the music trying to play but the wiring was too old and worn that it just sounded demonic at best.
“Ha ha, very funny,” Jihoon scoffed. “Who turned on the ride?”
The question was overlooked by Mingyu’s shriek. Every head who was on his side of the merry-go-round whipped over to see Bongbong sitting on a horse only a few rows away from the tall boy. But another scream from Seungkwan was what brought attention to the answer to Jihoon’s question.
Eight was standing at the controls of the ride, his never-changing smile on his face as he slowly waved.
“Run!” Joshua called, leaping off of the horse he was sitting sideways on.
“Run where?” Seokmin called as he scrambled to get off the ride and jump the short fence.
“Food court!” Soonyoung shouted as he pumped his legs as fast as they would go. “It’s a long shot...but I have an idea!”
“I’d rather know the idea first!” Jeonghan called after him as the group ran together away from the merry-go-round.
“One of Changkyun’s friends apparently broke in before!” he tried to explain between breaths. “He said there’s an underground exit there! Who knows if it’s legit, but...”
But it was the only plan they had.

All of you had to squeeze through the tiny basement windows to get back in after finding the doors to be locked once again.
“How’d those fuckers get out in the first place?” Jeonghan huffed as he landed on the concrete floor of the basement. “The doors have been locked this entire time.”
“We’re being chased by animatronics that haven’t been functioning for years, and they’re out to kill us for some reason, and that’s what you’re going to question?” Soonyoung pointed out.
“Can we focus, please?” Seungcheol whined. “The sooner we find this secret eit, the sooner we’re free.”
“Everyone start searching,” Hansol said, waiving for everyone to scour the basement.
All of you searched every inch you could. The floor, the walls, shelves, behind old cupboards and props -- but there was nothing.
“What if it’s not here?” Chan suggested.
“Yeah? And where else would an underground exit be other than in the basement?” Jeonghan shot back.
The youngest frowned and rolled his eyes, “Soonyoung just said it was underground, he didn’t say under what part of the food court.”
“I mean...Jeonghan has a point,” Seokmin admitted hesitantly. “The basement is underground.”

“It can’t hurt to check somewhere else,” you spoke up, moving to stand beside Chan. “We’re looked everywhere down here. What if it’s not in the basement? There could be some secret tunnel under a different location and we’re just going to be here wasting our time.”
“I mean...yeah, that makes sense,” Jihoon decided with a shrug. “Alright, we’ll try back upstairs.”
“I don’t wanna go back up there...” Seokmin whined, clinging to the nearest person -- it happened to be Junhui.
“We’re all going,” you reassured him with a soft smile. “Let’s go. Nothing’s going to happen.”
You led the way up the stairs this time, but you found yourself going slow. You strained your ears for any noise on the other side of the basement door but the food court seemed to be quiet. Maybe the animatronics couldn’t get back in since the doors were locked.
You pushed the door open cautiously, poking your head out to glance around. It seemed empty, so you opened the door wider and let everyone else out.
“Is that e--”
SLAM!
All of you jumped back and turned around hearing the basement door slam shut behind the last person out.
“Fuck this, I want out,” Mingyu stated, shaking his head as he began to quickly walk away from the door.
“Hold up,” Wonwoo reached out and grabbed Mingyu’s wrist to keep him with the group. “We should stick together.”
“It probably just closed from the weight of the door anyway,” Minghao figured before going to pull on the door handle.
It didn’t budge.
“Move out of the way, toothpick,” Seungcheol smoothly pushed Minghao out of the way before trying the door himself.
Still nothing.
“D-did it...lock?” Chan asked slowly.
“Haha, would you look at that?” Seungkwan said, checking his wrist that very clearly didn’t have a watch on it. “I actually have to get the fuck out of here. Bye!”
“Maaaaybe,” Hansol grabbed him by the elbow and dragged him back, “don’t do that.”
“Yeah, nobody goes running off, got it?” Jihoon checked, shining his light at everyone to make sure they agreed to the new rule. “Shit’s too weird to be splitting up.”
“I think our best bet would be to hide in the security room until morning,” you spoke up. “It’s probably the safest place in here.”
“_____’s right,” Wonwoo nodded. “Let’s go -- and stick together.”
As a group, all of you made your way to the security room, with you, Jihoon, and Soonyoung leading the way. All of you had your lights, shining them around to make sure the entire area was safe until you made it to the security room and barricaded the door closed.
“Jesus Christ, I hated that,” Mingyu panted as if he had been holding his breath the entire time you were walking.
“I think I almost shit myself,” Soonyoung admitted.
“Imagine your last words being ‘I think I almost shit myself’,” Junhui snorted.
“Hang on, shut the fuck up,” Seungcheol snapped, holding a hand up as he quickly scanned the group in the room. He was trying to count heads while all of you were talking, and as he quickly recounted, his blood turned to ice. “Why are we one short?”
“One short?” Jeonghan asked.
“Someone’s missing,” he said urgently.
“Alright, let’s run attendance real quick,” Jihoon decided, trying to stay level-headed. He pulled out his phone and went to the group chat. “Obviously I’m here. Soonyoung?”
“Here.”
“Seungcheol?”
“Here.”
“Mingyu?”
“Unfortunately here.”
“Hansol?”
“Yup.”
“_____?”
“Here.”
“Joshua?”
Silence.
Jihoon looked up from his phone, repeating, “Josh?”
You and your friends looked around, trying to find Joshua’s face in the crowded room. But nobody spoke up, and the silence following Joshua’s name became deafening.
“Oh fuck...” you breathed, trying to not completely lose your shit. “Did we really lose Josh?”
“We have to go back for him,” Jeonghan insisted.
“What? No!” Seungkwan shouted. “That’s suicide!”
Then everyone was bickering. While everyone of course wanted to hope Joshua was safe, half of the group felt that going back out to look for him would mean all of them would get killed. The other half, on the other hand, were willing to risk their lives to go on a rescue mission.

“I mean...how would it be under anywhere else?” you asked slowly with a shrug. “No offense, Chan. But like, this is kind of the only basement in the place.”
“See?” Jeonghan sneered.
Chan just frowned and rolled his eyes.
“There’s gotta be something we missed,” Soonyoung said, trying to stay calm. “Let’s just sweep the place over again.”
But after more looking, you still came up with nothing.
“At this point, I’m about to just dig through the boxes of old animatronic parts and just hope there’s a portal at the bottom or something,” Joshua sighed, slumped against a wall with Jeonghan beside him.
“Good luck,” Jeonghan scoffed. “I already tried picking one up to move them away from the wall but they’re super fucking heavy. It’s literally impossible.”
You turned your head to look at the large stack of boxes. There were piles of various sizes, but the ones at the back pressed up against the wall went up the highest. It was a long shot, but behind the boxes was the only place nobody checked because it couldn’t be reached. But with everyone giving up hope, it didn’t hurt to try, right?
“Hey, Gyu,” you spoke up before pointing to the boxes. “Think you can move those?”
Mingyu shrugged, “Yeah, probably.”
He walked over to the wall and began lifting boxes one-by-one. He grunted as he picked them up and moved them away until he called everyone over.
“There’s metal behind here!” he called over his shoulder.
“Ooh, is it the door?” Soonyoung asked excitedly, pushing himself off the floor.
“Told you it was better to look down here,” Jeonghan said once more.
Jihoon groaned, “Can you let it go? Leave Chan alone already.”
Seungcheol started assisting in the box-moving until the metal door was accessible. Seungcheol tried to push it open, but it didn’t budge. He tried harder, but still nothing.
“Can I try?” Mingyu asked.
Seungcheol stepped out of the way, gesturing for the tallest to give it a shot.
Mingyu threw his shoulder into the door a few times before it finally swung open, leading to a narrow corridor that looked like it would bring you straight to Hell.
“Okay,” Soonyoung breathed out, “let’s see if this is the way to freedom.”

“Why is this an argument?!” you shouted over the bickering. “Our friend could be dead! I don’t care if nobody comes with me, but I’m going to find Josh.”
“I’ll go,” Jeonghan stated.
“Me too,” Hansol volunteered with a slight raise of his hand.
“Plus, I highly doubt an animatronic got him,” Minghao scoffed as he went to join your group as you went to open the door.
“Well...good luck with that,” Seungkwan nodded.
In the end, it was you leading the way, with Jeonghan, Hansol, Minghao, Seokmin, and Seungcheol tagging along -- the latter two clinging to each other as you opened the door and went down the short hallway to the door that read EMPLOYEES ONLY on the other side.
“Why would he split off from the group?” Jeonghan wondered. “If he were trying to prank you guys, he would’ve had me in on it.”
“Maybe he just--”
Your sentence was cut off by a scream -- your own scream. Your eyes saw the scene before you: Joshua’s body laying just in front of the EMPLOYEES ONLY door, a bloodied mess. All you could do was scream.
Standing over him, covered in what you could only assume was your friend’s blood, was Bongbong.
“_____, run!” Minghao shouted, grabbing your arm and yanking you away from the door.
He quickly reached for the door and slammed it closed as you and the others ran back down the short hall. Jihoon had poked his head out the door to see what the noise was, and you crashed right into him, hyperventilating as tears welled in your eyes.
God, that image was going to be burned into your brain forever.
“What happened?” he asked.
“J-J-Josh!” you sobbed.
“Those things are in here,” Minghao panted, closing the door to the security room and pressing his back. “Th-they got Josh.”
“You’re fucking with us,” Seungkwan said quietly and very unsurely.
“Would Minghao fuck with you?!” Jeonghan cried. “If you don’t believe us, why don’t you go out there and check for yourself, Kwan? Go get yourself traumatized!”
“Okay, don’t scream at him, it won’t help anything,” Wonwoo spoke up, trying to somehow keep the group put together.
“Let’s just focus on finding a way out,” Seungcheol decided in a shaky voice.
“U-um...guys?” Mingyu spoke up, staring into the monitors.
Everyone gathered over to see what he was looking at.
Each room had a camera and a monitor to go with it. In each room, stood an animatronic. Each camera had an animatronic staring into it, as if they all were staring at the group.
They knew where you were.
“We have to get out of here,” Seomin panted, beginning to hyperventilate. “They’re going to come in here and kill us!”
“I get it’s scary, but we have to stay calm and--”
“Hey!”
Everyone turned their heads a the sudden exclamation. Chan was standing beside a square metal door in the floor with some dusty boxes and wires he’d moved to find it. He smirked, gesturing to the door.
“While you guys were shitting your pants, I found the underground exit,” he stated.
“Well fuck, kid,” Jihoon whistled under his breath.
“Let’s get the hell outta here,” Soonyoung said as he threw the trapdoor opened and descended the ladder that led to a narrow corridor.
Chan gave Jeonghan a pointed look, “And you thought I was stupid.”
Jeonghan just rolled his eyes, “Whatever.”

You felt like a shitty person for not wanting to risk your life for Joshua. You felt extremely guilty that you didn’t want to go out and look for your friend, but truthfully, you were afraid to die -- and that’s why half your friends didn’t want to go looking for him. Not everyone was brave enough to be a hero, and while you always told yourself you would be when putting yourself into the shoes of horror movie characters, it just wasn’t the truth.
But in the midst of the argument of whether or not to go out to search for Josh -- the argument that you stayed silent for -- Mingyu spoke up in a shaky voice, “U-uh...g-guys?”
Everyone turned toward him to see he was staring into the monitors. You all gathered over to see what he was looking at.
Each room had a camera and a monitor to go with it. However, the monitors had gone fuzzy so you couldn’t see anything in any of the rooms.
Wonwoo’s eyebrows furrowed, “Why are the cameras suddenly down?”
You wished they stayed that way after seeing what was displayed next. In each room, stood an animatronic. Each camera had an animatronic staring into it, as if they all were staring at the group.
They knew where you were.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the most disturbing thing.
You could see on one of the monitors, Bongbong was standing in front of the camera holding a familiar body. Joshua was being held up by his neck, and blood was coming out of his mouth, nose, eyes, and even his ears.
You weren’t the only one to let out a scream and flinch away from the camera, hiding your face as you started panicking and crying.
“We have to get out of here,” Seomin panted, beginning to hyperventilate. “They’re going to come in here and kill us!”
“We have to find the fucking exit!” Seungcheol said in a panic. “Everyone go--”
“Hey!”
Everyone turned their heads a the sudden exclamation. Chan was standing beside a square metal door in the floor with some dusty boxes and wires he’d moved to find it. He was just staring at you like he hadn’t just witnessed what all of you did -- and maybe he didn’t because he was too busy searching.
“Way ahead of you,” he stated.
“Thank god,” Jihoon said under his breath.
“Let’s get the hell outta here,” Soonyoung said as he threw the trapdoor opened and descended the ladder that led to a narrow corridor.
Chan gave Jeonghan a pointed look, “And you thought I was stupid.”
Jeonghan just glared at him, “I’m not in the fucking mood.”
And then he went down the ladder.

Other than only being wide enough for one person to walk through at a time, it was also very dimly-lit. It definitely looked like something straight out of a horror movie that would 100% lead to the characters’ imminent death.
Needless to say your heart was pounding in your ears.
There was another metal door, but this one was far easier to open. The squeak of it echoed down the corridor as the thirteen of you filed into the room. It seemed to be where they kept the spare mascot suits that actual employees would wear. There were a few of the bodies of the suits hanging up, with heads scattered in corners and on shelves, along with gloves and feet strewn about.
“I hate this,” Jun stated, looking around the room.
“I know these things are empty, but looking into their empty eyes is somehow worse,” Jihoon mumbled, staring at an Eight head.
At the opposite end of the tiny room in the right corner was another metal door. You were starting to wonder how many more metal doors you’d have to encounter in this place.
To the left of the room, there was a tiny wooden door that seemed like it would lead to a crawlspace. You assumed there was just more storage back there, but nobody cared enough to look back there, anyway. The focus was to get out of this place and get to safety.
“C’mon,” you nodded your head toward the other metal door that you assumed would lead to the exit, “let’s keep going.”
As Seungcheol went for the door, you and your friends heard banging. You all paused, Seungcheol’s hand on the handle. You listened for the banging again, and then looked to where it seemed to be coming from.
“Guys?” Joshua’s voice called from behind the small wooden door. “Guys?! Oh my god, guys! C-can you hear me? Hello?! Help me!”
“Josh?” Jeonghan took a step toward the door.

“Joshua!” you cried as you ran to the small door.
You knew what your eyes saw, but was it possible none of it was real? How else would you be hearing Joshua’s voice? He must’ve been alive somehow. Anything seemed possible at this point.
You got down on your knees, opened the small door, and crawled your way through. You stood up as your friends tried to get in behind you, but what you saw made your heart fall into your stomach as your hands went to cover your mouth, muffling the loud sob that came out.
Joshua’s body was slumped against the left wall, looking just as you had remembered.
He was still dead.
Your friends had similar reactions to you. Seokmin even threw up.
Seungcheol shook his head slowly, eyes full of tears while some streaked his cheeks, “We... W-we have to bring his body...”
“He’s right,” Jihoon said solemnly -- his body seemed to be shutting down now, almost uncapable of processing his emotions. “We need evidence of what happened tonight. Nobody will believe us otherwise.”
“I-I hate to say it, b-but...it’ll s-slow us down, though,” Wonwoo interjected through his sniffles. “What if we don’t make it out?”

You quickly reached out and grabbed Jeonghan to keep him from going any closer to that door. He turned to look at you, a pained expression on his face.
“Jeonghan, that’s not Joshua,” you told him. “You saw what happened to him. Whatever it is, it’s not him.”
“I think _____’s right,” Wonwoo nodded. “We need to keep going.”
You kept your hold on Jeonghan as all of your began filing out of the mascot room into another narrow corridor like the other one. This one, though, had a sharp right turn before leading down a while to another steel door.
But this door didn’t budge.
Soonyoung was at the head of the group, and he groaned in frustration as he tugged at the handle over and over again, “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me; what’s with these doors?!”
You started to hear a thumping. It slowly got louder and louder...
...Or maybe it was closer and closer.
Junhui walked down the way you’d come and poked his head around the corner, his eyes widening at what he saw. He whipped his head back around and booked it straight back to where your group was trying to open the door, calling, “You might wanna hurry up on that door!”
Coming down the hall were all four animatronics, their eyes lit up as they stomped closer and closer.
“It’s not doing anything!” Soonyoung huffed, trying with all his might to open the door. “Mingyu, get up here!”
Mingyu squeezed between bodies to get to the door, trying to open it as the group just shouted for him to be faster.
“We might have to just...face these things,” Chan said. “Once and for all.”
“Yeah? How?” Wonwoo scoffed. “They’ll crush us in seconds.”
“There’s fou-- thirteen of us, and four of them. We might have a shot.”

“We can’t just leave him here,” you stated. “Not only for the evidence, but because he doesn’t deserve to rot away here. His family doesn’t deserve to wonder what happened to him.”
“I’ll grab him,” Seungcheol offered, swallowing his fears and stepping forward to scoop up his friend. “Let’s get him home.”
Chan was the last into the tiny room, so he turned to go. But the wooden door was suddenly closed and wouldn’t open back up.
“What the hell?!” he grunted as he continued to try the door.
“Why’d you let it close, dumbass?!” Jeonghan demanded.
“I didn’t!” Chan shouted back. “It was just open!”
“Ugh, leave it to the fucking baby to--”
“G-guys?” Seokmin asked.
“Can you get off my fucking case?!” Chan huffed as he stood up and went to stand toe-to-toe with Jeonghan. “You’re always such a fucking asshole to me! Why can’t you--”
“Guys?” Seokmin tried again, looking between the left and right walls.
“Are you two really going to argue right now?” Jihoon groaned. “We’re literally--”
“Guys!” Seokmin finally shouted over everyone. “The walls!”
“What about the--”
Jihoon’s question died down as soon as all of you began looking at the walls. They were moving in toward each other, which would crush all of you between them.
Everyone was suddenly in a panic. Everyone was throwing themselves at the door, trying to tug it open before the walls could do anything. Some of you -- such as you and Wonwoo -- decided to spread out so you had more room. But some -- like Jeonghan and Chan, who grouped up by the door with a few others -- created a big human-lump that would be crushed faster. You heard their cries and pleas before they were crushed to death with a sound you couldn’t get out of your ears.
It was only a moment later you met the same fate.

"Nobody wants to be the asshole that says it’s better to leave him behind, but...” you trailed off.
Wonwoo was right. Joshua would more than likely slow you down. Besides, you knew Josh would want all of you to have the best chance of getting out alive as possible.
“Th-then you go ahead,” Seokmin spoke up, almost like he was afraid to.
“What?” Jihoon asked.
“I...” Seokmin looked at Joshua as more tears welled in his eyes. “It makes me sad to think he’d just be down here alone. I don’t care if he’s...gone. He can’t just stay down here.”
“I’m not leaving my best friend down here,” Jeonghan agreed.
“Seokmin, he’s--”
“Look, just go,” Hansol interrupted whatever Jihoon was going to say. “I’ll help them with the body. You guys just go on ahead.”
Minus the three who wanted to collect Joshua’s body, the group turned and left the small room and went back to the mascot room. Soonyoung tugged on the metal door and led the way down another corridor that looked exactly the same as the one that had led into the mascot room. This one, though, had a sharp right turn before leading down a while to another steel door.
But as you were walking down the hallway, you heard the yells and screams of your three friends. All of you turned on a dime and ran back toward the mascot room but the metal door was already closed and wouldn’t re-open for some reason. All of you were yelling and trying to open the door until you heard a sickening crunch, and then silence.
You all fell silent. You didn’t know what to do now.
“We--” Jihoon’s voice cracked so he cleared his throat. “We should just...keep going...”
Following behind Jihoon, you all turned one by one and went back down the hallway. You turned the corner and walked down that long hallway toward another metal door.
But this door didn’t budge.
Jihoon groaned in frustration as he tugged at the handle over and over again, “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me; what’s with these doors?!”
You started to hear a thumping. It slowly got louder and louder...

“Mingyu, keep trying the door!” you called to him. “We’ll try to hold them back.”
“We?!” Seungkwan repeated.
Mingyu continued to try to pull the door open as the animatronics slowly turned the corner and began walking toward the nine of you. You weren’t sure how to prepare yourself for this at all, but you knew you couldn’t just turn your back and die.
But you should’ve known what would happen. Four giant machines up against eight fleshy humans who were nowhere near as strong. Sure, all of you were faster than them, but how could you dodge or run in such a narrow hallway? You were doomed from the start.
Well, not you specifically.
Seungcheol had shoved you to the back toward Mingyu, promising to keep you safe. So your friends all died in front of you, and all you could do was stand there and watch in horror.
That’s when Bongbong closed in on you.
“I got the--!”
Mingyu’s exclamation of finally getting the door open was cut off by Bongbong’s arm swinging out and clotheslining him into the wall and cutting off his oxygen.
The attack that was meant for you, but you had ducked underneath.
The light flooded into the corridor, and just like that, the animatronics just shut down. The light turned off in their eyes, and they were frozen with their hands reaching out for you.
Except Bongbong’s arm that was now frozen in place, keeping Mingyu strangled against the wall.
You could hear Mingyu gasping for air as you slowly opened your eyes that you’d squeezed shut when you ducked. You looked up and saw the animatronics were lifeless now, and then you shot up and turned to try to help Mingyu. You pulled and pulled on Bongbong’s arm while you had to watch Mingyu slowly die. It was like watching a movie in slow motion, the way his body went limp and the life drained from his eyes. Still, you stood there and sobbed and told him you’d free him as you continued to pull uselessly at the animatronic.
When it finally set in that you didn’t stand a chance, you ran out the back parking lot where the door opened to. You ran out of the park and to your car -- which was still parked near the other 3 that belonged to your friends that were no longer with you -- and drove off toward home with tears still streaming down your face.
The clock on your car radio said 6:08am.

“The door will work!” you swore “Like the basement, remember? Just keep trying!”
Sure, this was different in the way that you had to pull and not push, but it had to give eventually, right?
You continued to face the animatronics that were now starting to close in on all of you. Seungcheol tried to squeeze in besided Mingyu, grabbing the handle and pulling with him. Jihoon crawled between Mingyu’s legs and stood in between the taller boy’s arms, both of his hands wrapped around the handle and tugging with everything he had.
You moved to put yourself in front of your friends. You got all of them into this mess, so you deserved to be the first to die.
As Bongbong closed in on you, you closed your eyes.
“_____--!”
The darkness you saw behind your eyelids suddenly seemed brighter, and you felt a gust of wind from behind you.
There was a couple seconds of silence.
“Holy shit,” Minghao breathed.
You opened one eye just enough to see Bongbong’s face just inches from yours. But...why were the lights in its eyes off?
You opened your eye wider. Then the other one. Its arm was only a hair away from you, but it made no move to actually touch you. There was also light flooding into the corridor from behind you. You whipped your head around to see the door was open, and you looked back at four animatronics. Were they off now?
“Oh my god,” you sighed in a shaky voice, taking a step backward toward the door.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here,” Wonwoo said as he grabbed your hand and all but dragged you out the door.
The door opened to the back of the parking lot. All of you ran as fast as you could toward your cars, only stopping at the hood of the closest one to catch your breath. Seungcheol pulled out his phone.
“It’s 6am,” he reported.
“Maybe that’s why the door didn’t open,” Wonwoo panted, hands on his knees.

Even Jihoon was saying something weird had happened that night, because he thought he saw everyone die.
So...maybe they were right?
But when you inevitably went to school Halloween day, something didn’t seem right. Maybe it was because you hadn’t slept all night and you were drained in every sense, or maybe it was because you were convinced all of your friends had died right before your very eyes, but everything felt...off. At least, your friends did. It was their smiles and their voices and their hugs and laughs and promises that everything was fine, but something about it seemed alien to you.
Maybe it was from how emotionally and mentally drained you were, and the fact you didn’t get any sleep, but you swore there was an odd glow to their eyes that wasn’t just the glimmer of the florescents.
And why did Junhui wink at you?

(NOTE: i know some people might’ve only had josh die while other had more people die. so this part will mention multiple people who didn’t make it home but i will only mention josh by name. sorry if it seems kind of confusing)
You didn’t even want to go back home after everything that happened. But you needed to shower and change, so you dropped your friends off before going home. After getting out of the shower, you checked your phone. Your heart dropped and your stomach was doing flips at what it saw.
One series of texts was from a group chat that was all of the people you were positive made it home from Caratland. All of them were wondering what the fuck was going on.
The other was the original group chat, with a text from Joshua asking if everyone made it home okay. It made a shiver go down your spine. How could he be texting? He died.
Those that had died started having a conversation about hallucinating, insisting something weird must’ve been in the air to make everyone trip and see things that didn’t actually happen. Nobody knew if it was possible. Minghao suggested that at this point, anything was possible. But still, why did all of you have the same hallucination?
The group decided it was best to ignore the message.
When Wonwoo offered to give you a ride to school, you said yes.
The two of you walked to homeroom together and saw the usual group of your friends sitting at the left side of the classroom. But seeing the friends you thought had died now just sitting there like nothing happened made your skin crawl. You wanted to turn around and walk out.
Wonwoo squeezed your hand and continued forward.
You sat and chatted with the group, and everyone seemed to be dancing around the fact that things were...weird.
Maybe it was from how emotionally and mentally drained you were, and the fact you didn’t get any sleep, but you swore there was an odd glow to their eyes that wasn’t just the glimmer of the fluorescents.
And why did Joshua wink at you?
