Hmm. This is actually pretty difficult, I feel like I'm only exposed to such a curated selection of fanon these days I completely miss all the wild takes. I will say that I don't think Astarion would necessarily do that much embroidery/sewing after the events of the game. I got the impression that a lot of it was because he needed to look attractive and put together, lacked the resources to acquire new things, and embroidering dumb things on his underwear was the only amount of bodily autonomy he could flex. He can't exactly dye his hair, cut it, or steal any jewelry without it getting stolen by the other spawn: he literally only has the clothes on his back, and they need to be kept in good condition if he wants any degree of success enticing higher class/presumably less violent and more attractive people back to Cazador.

If anything, I think post-bg3 he'd splurge and get himself nice things, holding onto fraying clothing for far too long but not repairing it. He can buy things now - but the urge to hoard it would still exist, while patching it might strike too close to old habits. He'd pick up the thread and think of something, but wouldn't be able to bring himself to embroider anything for himself. A partner though, yes, but not himself.

Wait ok I just thought of the actual controversial take. I don't get the obsession with putting Astarion in dresses. He's beautiful, yes, but there are a lot of handsome men in fiction, but Astarion especially get put into dresses a lot. Is it because of the wavemother robes??? Did that unlock something in people??? Is it because he comes across as gay sometimes, so therefor let's put him in women's clothing, because crossdressing stereotypes? Maybe I'm thinking too deeply about this lol. But for real - he's a very masculine-coded character. He cries once, and that's an overwhelming cathartic release after centuries of pain. He's assertive in sex scenes. Even though he sounds like he's close to tears sometimes, he pushes past emotional things very quickly, is driven by a need for freedom, to provide for the player and be powerful enough for the both of them, to keep them safe, has a drive for power that's frightening, and will throw down if it comes down to it. He threatens you if you tell him no about sharing the tadpoles, even after sleeping together. His shoulders are much broader than you think. He's very, very masculine, both in body and values, he just also happens to be a flirt and has had trauma and submission beaten into him. In elf terms, he's the chaddest chad to ever chad.

He would also fold one leg over the other at the knee while sitting on a stool that gives stereotypical "gay" vibes, but I can also see him manspreading all over the place. But I just don't see fanart of Astarion manspreading with a prominent bulge the same way I see dress fanart everywhere. I feel like I just don't get the appeal enough to unpick this!

Crushing Ascended Astarion into the dirt. I'm so, so glad Larian added that option to take control of him after becoming the Absolute - he doesn't see it coming at all, and it's so good. First of all, I'm glad you like the headcanons! Secondly, Patroclus was in Phthia, yes!

The idea of ​​Achilles hiding in Skyros is because Thetis NEEDED him not to be found. As someone who doesn't see crossdressing as wrong, I don't see Achilles having to pretend to be a girl as something that's super concerning, but this is Ancient Greece we're talking about. A boy giving up his "masculinity" and performing "femininity" in order to "run away" from "glory" was… well, it was something to be criticized and avoided. It's notable how Achilles having to pretend to be a girl was treated negatively by the vast majority of sources, both Greek and Roman. Thetis deciding to do this shows how urgent the situation was for her. It wouldn't make sense for her to risk the disguise by keeping anything that would indicate Achilles' identity, which includes Patroclus. Plus, Patroclus is never mentioned as being in Skyros, either in the Greek or Roman sources. So he wasn't in Skyros!

And of course, there would be the possibility that he was already recruited and was among the Achaean army, if we deal with the sources that indicate Patroclus as Helen's suitor. And yeah, I consider Fabulae, Description of Greece and Pseudo-Apollodorus' Library in regards to Patroclus being a suitor of Helen and having sworn the Oath of Tyndareus, although earlier sources don't mention him and Hyginus (attributed author of Fabulae. He was Roman, but clearly passed on many Greek myths and even named the authors he used as references) said that there were other lists with other suitors, which opens the possibility that Patroclus may not have been always a suitor in the many versions since in the fragments of Catalogue of Women Hesiod doesn't mention him. However, with the exception of Fabulae which says that Patroclus offered 10 ships, I don't remember any source that says Patroclus had ships with him and most of the time he seems to fit in with Achilles' ships and army (I can be mistaken here). And considering he was an exile, whatever status he had (I'm increasingly toying with the idea that he was a noble and not a prince, but I won't delve into that because I'm still doing research), it probably wasn't as valid anymore and it's not like Patroclus had the influence to offer an army or ships.

As far as the Trojan War is concerned, the positive point of the Oath of Tyndareus for Menelaus, as Helen's chosen husband, and Agamemnon, as leader of the expedition, is that Helen's suitors had high status and therefore not only would they have to be compelled to participate but would also have to bring ships and an army with them. Patroclus doesn't have that to offer, and I fail to see the point in Menelaus, Agamemnon, and Odysseus (since Odysseus became one of the main recruiters after being recruted) being so determined to recruit a single person who can't offer resources. So in my Headcanonverse Patroclus went to the Trojan War not because he was recruited (because it's not worth such an effort for a single person who doesn't have something particularly special, as is the case with Achilles, Philoctetes and Neoptolemus), but because Achilles was recruited (not because of the Oath, though. He wasn't a suitor) and, as a Myrmidon, he was part of the army that Achilles provides as prince.

So I imagine that Achilles was discovered by Odysseus and Diomedes in Skyros, boarded one of their ships, some message was sent to Phthia for them to send the Myrmidons to Aulis since their prince was going to take part in the war and Achilles and Patroclus met again in Aulis. After a considerable time having problems with the winds Agamemnon does in fact send a message to Clytemnestra to go from Mycenae to Aulis with Iphigenia, so I imagine it would be perfectly possible that, while still in Skyros, some kind of messenger was sent to Phthia warning that the Myrmidons should meet the rest of the army in Aulis because their prince had agreed to participate in the war and needed the Phthian fleet. And I say "still in Skyros" because it would make the process more agile.

Here is a poorly done Paint map I made to try to illustrate what I'm talking about. Please note that I'm not using exact locations, just approximate ones! In red and green are the path of Patroclus and Achilles. For reference, in blue and purple I've put the path of the myth of Iphigenia… Agamemnon sent a message from Aulis to Mycenae, from Mycenae came Clytemnestra with Orestes and Iphigenia. After the sacrifice of Iphigenia, the Achaeans set out for Troy.

Also, I imagine that Achilles was recruited last precisely because he hid! So after the Myrmidons and Achilles arrived, the Achaean army was already fully assembled at Aulis. But then Agamemnon offended Artemis and they were trapped there, although I honestly don't know for how long. I just know that it was long enough for Agamemnon to be afraid of the army's reaction. Two weeks? A month? More than a month? I honestly don't know. In my headcanonverse, Achilles stayed on Skyros for a year, so that gives them at least a year to recruit everyone. I like to think that there were multiple recruiters to expedite the process (e.g. Odysseus and Diomedes were the ones who recruited Achilles, not Agamemnon) and that some people, having already heard about the situation, simply set sail for Aulis, the assembly point, before even being directly recruited.

Anyway, I actually avoid thinking too much about coherent chronology because I've already decided that it's like a Sisyphean mission in the case of Greek mythology. And of course, this is all just headcanon!

Gender Headcanon: subaru is literally, as we’ve all discussed, like EVERY letter of lgbtq+ i swear. like natsumi EXPLICITLY being stated to be his ideal self….. what cisgender boy has his ideal version of himself be a woman…. come on….. and hes been like. dressing and trying to pass as a girl for his crossdressing pre-isekai too. like subarus Practiced A Lot at this. subaru clearly enjoys doing this and he was crushed when he couldnt pass bc of his voice pre-isekai :(( AND LIKE subaru and his complex relationship to masculinity and feeling insecure in his own skin like……………… and then natsumi being his ideal self…… natsumi being the Heroine……….. and its like. subaru clearly has a case of “do i want to be them or be With Them” when it comes to men hes attracted to (most notably julius.) so like. it could apply to women too. like. and then the way subaru reacts to felix’s presentation too………. i just think it says a lot. i dont care what tappei says but he wrote all this shit in the text fr!!! and also in general. natsuki subaru being a gender neutral name…. same with natsumi schwartz… so yes genderqueer subaru for the win. i personally hc subaru as genderfluid or bigender!! and also like. subaru being Very LGBTQ+ is so in line with rezero’s themes of self love and self improvement and self discovery and Identity. i think it hits so much harder if subaru Is lgbtq+ versus if he was just insecure straight cis man. like no wonder subaru was struggling Even More. hes so so far in the closet and struggling with like the internal homophobia and shit fr :(((

that and 1. subaru being lgbt is such a great subversion of what you would think when you first meet his character. and also a subversion of ur typical isekai protag which ADDS to rezeros subversion of isekai in general and 2. i love making Certain People mad with these hcs. like its so supported by the text the only thing missing is explicit confirmation. which. i have my doubts with tappei on that but iirc he DID say he nearly wrote a lust if with the guys…. tappei. come on. you already explicitly said that natsumi is subarus ideal self.

A ship I have with said character: im very open to most subaru ships!!! i just love a lot of them—reinsuba, ottosuba, emisuba, remsuba, julisuba… i just like how each kind of dynamic with subaru has so much range like even in just main route alone?? and then you factor in the ifs and it gets So Interesting. theres so much history with each pairing and so much to explore, whether its platonic or romantic. and subaru has a LOT of love in his heart.

i just like each pairing for different reasons hah—like ok ive talked a lot about reinsuba and emisuba already in other asks so. i DO like remsuba okay. not in the sense that i want it to be the endgame ship in main route bc thats very much not happening and i would prefer The Most Detailed emisuba development of all time. which would be more thematically relevant <3 but i DO ADORE remsubas relationship in general. like its so so complicated??? like. yeah theres the conflict in arc 2. theres the conflict in arc 7 with her waking up and being different and being so mean to him about natsumi :((( theres her “youre my hero” versus “youre not a hero” WHICH. URHGHF ITS SO GOOD….. and like yeah remsuba really do be. iffy. in terms of how healthy it is. but its so complicated bc you also have rem being like—she was like the first person, narratively, to be willing to DIE to save subaru the exact way he does for other people (including rem). and then the famous from zero scene in season one which is a MASTERPIECE but i hate how people fixate on “i love emilia” LIKE REM IS HAPPY FOR SUBARU. SHE IS HAPPY AS LONG AS HE IS. EVEN IF HE DOESNT LIKE HER BACK. but also he did like her back romantically for a time. and also of course rem had her fixation on subaru :(( subaru had his own obsession for emilia while rem had hers for subaru pre-being gluttonyed?? :(( yeah like. remsuba being so complicated is so interesting to me. like she and subaru are very passionate people yes. but also they do need to learn to tone it down sometimes you know? REM ESPECIALLY TOO BECAUSE EVEN AFTER SHE STOPS BEING MURDERY TOWARDS HIM… FOR EXAMPLE IN SEASON ONE SHE WOULD CANONICALLY GO TO HIS ROOM IN THE MORNING AND WAIT FOR HIM TO WAKE UP…. like she'd just sit there at his bedside and Stare at him... like girl chill a bit its okay T^T i havent read sloth if. but it seems like they learned to mellow out and have a happy life T^T apart from. a shit ton of people dying in the background and also subaru dying of old age and resetting back to arc 3. i am interested to see if we’ll get further remsuba closure in arc 8 yes. but also im bonking subaru on the head in arc 7 for saying even REM TORTURING HIM was a fond memory. pls let this be addressed again later i swear sodndn.

ok also julisuba and ottosuba. i am no expert on julisuba but on the other hand i have analyzed Too Much Ottosuba so perhaps i am an expert there wodndn. but YEAH i love those ships. they have so much history and moments between them and they are. definitely the more Explicit evidence of subaru being bi (between subarus Interest in julius and reid calling julisuba boyfriends and SUBARUS INTEREST IN JULIUS... vs ottosuba repeatedly being like “omg do you Like Like me?” “NO I DONT SHUT UP” and also their continued divorce arc dynamics yep). but also i will say i really like ottosuba because specifically they are the subaru pairing where theyre like. Very Much Closer To Being Equals. if theyre not already equals in something. like in terms of power levels and intellect and their very loving families and previous inability to fit in or be believed by people and also their status in the narrative as Being Just A Guy in comparison to everyone else. and yet ottosuba are the MOST important members to their camp for their jobs—subaru keeps everyone alive, and otto handles All the politics, which we see over and over again. they are literally THE power duo. otto is so so important too as the second person to die FOR subaru the same way subarus died for others. like the paralleling of otto pushing subaru out of the way when the white whale drove otto insane (and later otto tried to go back for subaru once he regained his senses ;-;;;) versus otto pushing subaru out of the way so he didnt get killed by garf ;-;;;;;. and otto being the second person after rem to also give subaru an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT speech to him (otto-rem parallels...???) <33 except ottosuba also foil a lot bc of their Different Morals. but theyre both stubborn as hell and have a tendency to go off and do shit they think is best without telling anyone bc theyre too deadset (hah) on what THEY think. (OTTO. SPENDING A WHOLE YEAR SECRETLY GETTING THE BOOK OF WISDOM AND HAVING IT RESTORED?? HELLO???) anyway yeah ill stop right here bc i have So Much ottosuba posts on this damn blog wkdndn but i really do think the appeal of ottosuba is that they Are on a more even playing ground. and their morality flipflops sometimes. ottos issues are just more lowkey than subarus widndnd. i am. however. nervous about all the ottosuba and vincent-chisha parallels in arc 8 bc………. possible otto perma death on the horizon??? 😭😭😭😭 itd CRUSH subaru.

A BROTP I have with said character: BROTP ottosuba and ramsuba are so so funny and great wofndn but special shoutout to garf and subaru in particular!!! i think its interesting how far their relationship has come bc they had a VERY rough start and its like. 1. im sure garf would immediately regret going into a rage and killing a shit ton of people in that One Failed Loop and 2. we learn garf is a traumatized fourteen year old whos been trying so hard to take care of the demihumans inside sanctuary while his sister and mom left him, one way or another, and hes very afraid of the outside world. and its like YEAH now your behavior makes sense. and its so good to see garfs growth and also his growth in his relationship with subaru (and otto) bc he looks up to subaru sm!!! subaru helped garf so much T^T theyre brothers guys 😭😭 i think its so adorable and so sweet. ill defend garf all day everyday. garf 🤝 subaru with their DAMN hero complexes while otto tries to keep them both on a leash so they dont do stupid shit. subaru IS a good role model for garf though ill say that. subaru tries so hard to be a good role model wkdndn. and yes i always laugh when garf teases subaru for drawing doodles and writing encouraging things for emilia in the temple.

A NOTP I have with said character: okay so. maybe i will spill some tea here. hah so i went over in ram’s ask how i think ramsuba in wrath if is actually super interesting widndns but otherwise ramsuba to me is bland. which. i also just feel like subaru/crusch and subaru/ana and subaru/priscilla are also bland. like. i dont think theyll ever feel interesting to me akdndn. like theres not. as much to work off of imo. like i just dont think theyre a good match romantically at all. like At All. priscilla especially LMAO…. and im tired of people reducing women in the story to just boobs and being fucked by subaru 😭😭😭 like i dont have anything against those subaru ships, my biggest notp is just seeing a bunch of characters be butchered just to have subaru have sex with various women. 😭😭 obviously not everyone in the fandom does that but i see this happens the most with priscilla fr. pls. shes more than just boobs :(((

A CHILD. HOSTAGE AND LOCKED UP IN ORDER TO USE ELSA. HER OLDER SISTER FIGURE. JEEZ. my biggest notp of all time is treating unhealthy relationships as if they Arent unhealthy.

TAPPEI…… N-NOTHING HAPPENS, RIGHT? *EXPLODES WITH RAGE*. even if petra and subaru get together later when theyre Older Adults in some AU or something its like. subaru knew her when she was a young child. and she had a crush on him then. um. personally idk if im fully comfortable with that hah T^T

A random headcanon: GONNA TALK ABOUT WRATH IF. anyway so the wrath if divergence point is that subaru gets beatrice to teleport him away and ram chases him down, ram tries to strangle him to death but fails, he smashes her head with a rock. yes. BUT OKAY when u watch the anime. beatrice comes for his aid AFTER subaru gets to the cliff and tries to psych himself up to like. jump off to save rem and stuff. THEREFORE wrath if subaru still considered trying to rbd via jumping off that cliff. he just decided not to and agreed to have beatrice teleport him away. this is something not many people seem to mention or maybe even notice (??) but I THINK ABOUT IT A LOT…. :((

General Opinion over said character: i LOVE SUBARU WITH MY WHOLE BEING. he is my absolute favorite anime character of all time. his character arc is so chaotic and complicated and i think the way he Does like still struggle with the same Inner Conflicts is so so much more realistic. recovery and self improvement are NOT linear and he shows that perfectly. and i hate how much people misread subaru T^T the whole chadbaru trend in fandom of how he should get harems or how he should leave everyone or be terrible to emilia for *insert a long list of Terrible reasons here* is so. like did we all read and watch the same damn story or what hah. the whole point of rezero is LOVE ITSELF….. and subaru ultimately has a lot of love for so many people around him. though of course i do worry for how rbd reveal is going to be handled, and im not entirely sure how to feel about subarus arc 7 development atm. rbd reveal is gonna have catastrophic consequences for Everyone. like everyone hes ever been close to finding out hes died a shit ton of times to save him?? that so many of them have like. maimed and killed him or at least Tried To Do That? like HOW are we gonna get a happy ending out of all of this—hows tappei gonna handle this?? 😭😭 i worry sometimes that when rbd reveal happens it wont be nuanced or itll gloss over certain things or it just. wont be so satisfying. bc u have arc 7 subaru out here with SUICIDE PILLS……. ARC 7 SUBARU IN REPEATED INSANE DEATH LOOPS AS A CHILD….. how are we gonna come back from this?? 😭😭 i have my doubts sometimes but tappei loves insane character development for subaru so i suppose i will hope. i just wish for all the trauma to be seen and addressed akdndn and the fact that rbd is so. complicated. it makes subaru and his relationships with everyone else so complicated. and rbd is inherently unfair in a lot of ways to both subaru and everyone hes close to. i cant wait for more subaru development but i also think after arc 8 he NEEDS a break or like otherwise, personally i think subarus gonna snap for good and not be able to return from it 😭😭 or ill just have to suspend my uhh disbelief. i suppose. but yes i do love subaru a lot!!! his hair is a Pain in the ass to draw but ill endure the pain just for him. <33

but regarding all of subarus loved ones maiming and killing him a lot—i think its fascinating how the if routes prove he is JUST as capable of ruining all their lives. like i feel like people forget that sometimes in favor of woaaah cool what if routes where subaru becomes “badass”…. but LIKE…. hes SO SO CAPABLE of so much destruction. he is choice itself. he is capable of changing the entire world and everyone around him. he is capable of causing the deaths and trauma for SO MANY PEOPLE… and like i think rezero itself and subarus relationships are like an extreme version of hedgehog’s dilemma, u know? like u get close to people to love and be loved, but ur also very vulnerable to getting hurt. and rezero is About love. and part of close relationships are that ur so close u Can be hurt. maybe you Will be hurt. but u will also Love….. unless ur one of the ifbarus then fuck u for making the wrong decisions ig wodndndn. im telling u guys that subaru is LITERALLY an eldritch being at this rate. todd is so right.

and. okay one last thing im gonna be real for a second. im a little eh on subaru being a child, honestly. like i DO like the trope of turning characters back into their child selves in order to explore their psychology that way!! but like. idk i feel like the childbaru arc is kinda too similar to the whole amnesiabaru arc in arc 6. it feels Extraneous. it doesnt feel different enough for me personally. (emphasis on personally. this is all my opinion hah.) and then he is STILL A CHILD IN ARC 8 EVEN THOUGH THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT GOT TURNED INTO KIDS ARE NOW BACK TO NORMAL…… LIKE…. im sorry but the childbaru has overstayed its welcome by the time we get to arc 8 imo 😭😭

//Much of the controversy with Chihiro really comes from a misunderstanding about his personal identity, which I don't blame Western audiences for not getting, since it's a Japanese thing.

//Yes, how it's presented does come off as uncomfortably transphobic, especially now in 2024. However, nothing in the narrative ever suggests that Chihiro is trans. I have gone through DR1 several times, and I can tell you that everything points to Chihiro himself identifying as male.

//While it would be easy to dismiss that as poor handling of a serious topic, the fact that DR never even references Chihiro's gender outside of judgements about him not being tough and manly, and explaining to Makoto at the end of Salmon Mode that he's actually a boy, all lend credence to the idea. That set off a moment of blind fury and, without even intending to, he killed Chihiro. Both of them were victims of toxic masculinity, which was and still is a pressing issue in Japan and the West as a whole.

//I'm not saying it was presented perfectly, but in that cultural context, it explains that a western localization doesn't properly convey and has thus given people the wrong impression.

Impressions that have lead many to read Mondo's actions and Spike Chunsoft's writing in this Chapter in bad faith, which does far more harm than good when dissecting its flaws.

a couple of persona 4 headcanons

Just a list of my Persona 4/affiliated media headcanons (I really hope this doesn’t get buried lmfao…also before you ask no I don’t normally post persona I kinda got hooked through the Honkai SR fandom. What can I say, Yu’s very relatable about not wanting to upset and needing to protect the cute kid calling you “big bro”)

I have no idea what’s going on with the whole “Teddie lives with Yosuke” thing because I have literally searched up everything (don’t ask about my youtube watch history please) and here’s my take on it: Yosuke basically came home with a Teddie in tow, presented him as a guy with nowhere to go who was willing to work for his keep, stuffed him in his closet because the “spare bedroom” is his dad’s home office or something, and at some point the Hanamuras just accepted they have two sons now because how can you not like sweet, innocent, naive-but helpful Teddie? Also Yosuke played Teddie’s disappearance off as him being at Yu’s or something. I have no idea how that man pulled this off but it worked. (yes I”m a sucker for hanabros)

I still can’t decide which i prefer: Yu x Yosuke or Yu x Rise (I do like the idea that RIse grabbed Yu, flung him over her shoulder, and marched off into the sunset, though like…have you seen the Persona 4 partner dances???)

I’m actually kinda surprised Yu just goes back to wherever he came from for his third year, like just stay in Inaba for your last year of highschool? You already stayed a whole year. And he canonically has parents who are away a lot on business. But to make sense of this, I propose: He goes back only because the school he’s going to gives him a leg up into the uni he wants to go to (which is understandable. Inaba is a tiny rural town in the middle of nowhere, he’ll probably get some better connections in a city school or something). He definitely comes back on every holidays possible, and messages his friends so often that his new friends at his other school are just like “bro….please at least wear the right uniform….”

RIse’s idol group starts flinging around wild theories on what she did during her year-long break. It ranges from everything from hooking up with three different guys (they spied on her while she was doing a video call with the others (FaceTime apparently existed in 2012, which I kinda forgot about. I think the flip phones kinda just threw me off.)

Yukiko and Chie definitely get together. Have you seen those two? They’re definitely roommates, at the last.

At some point someone asks about Teddie’s bear costume, and Yosuke covers up by saying Kanji made some alterations to it. Kanji does not approve, and Yosuke is seen later running through Inaba with an angry Kanji on his heels.

Also that new outfit Teddie wears in the epilogue of Golden? That’s just Yosuke’s old stuff - Teddie still wears the first human clothes he ever got for fancy occasions, but between Yosuke and Chie they manage to talk him into regular stuff. 

And they definitely have a running joke where they introduce Teddie as an exchange student from France (with that bright blond hair and Ouran Host Club-esque style choices, it was bound to happen) whenever they meet someone new. Yosuke knows Teddie will play along anyways, but buys him sweet treats as a bribe anyways. They usually drop the act pretty quite, but it’s really funny for the Hanabros. Especially if Teddie is crossdressing, because that man totally kept his Alice outfit. 

Kanji, unfortunately for Yosuke, uses Teddie as a model whenever he decides to get creative. Yosuke is considering getting a second closet because Teddie shares most of Yosuke’s old stuff. Like clothes (Yosuke is the only one who has stuff in Teddie’s size, and Teddie’s growing a bit anyways), In the winter, Teddie regularly shows up to places wearing Yosuke’s sweaters and jackets, and Yosuke is just thankful that Kanji makes Teddie stuff like that in Yosuke’s size so both of them can wear it. 

TImeskip: Nanako moves to the city with Yu for highschool, so she can attend a more liberal-arts focussed school. Yu doesn’t mind (he’s like, 26 at this point, and probably works some kind of office job (he likes a bit of quiet in his life, after the chaos called his teenage years and having famous idol Rise Kujikawa as a mate) (and also he gets free Nanako time) and Dojima, finally taking more breaks from work, sometimes drops in to say hi and maybe buy dinner.

Yu also gets to shovel talk Nanko’s first boyfriend. Nanko has to spend half an hour reassuring him that Yu is actually in fact a really nice guy….and then turns around to see Yosuke and Rise waiting for their turn to shoveltalk. And while Yu is scary, having your girlfriend’s older brother’s brofriend and Risette staring you down was not a good follow up. Nanako is rightfully mortified, Yu does in fact bake apology cookies, and Yosuke and Risette manage to drag the couple into an impromptu dance session to ease the tension just a little after nearly scaring the poor kid half to death. (The poor kid is someone in the Phantom Theives, because I saw a really cool AU on AO3 and it lives rent-free in my head. And I like the idea of Nanako becoming a Phantom Thief because “it runs in the family, thanks a lot Yu >:l “

Naoto ends up taking Aketchi under her wing. Does she mind? I mean, to her he’s not entirely horrible. Is she pleased with his actions? …that’s debatable

Inaba becomes known for having great weather. Except for the one time Marie catches a bug going around the town, that ends up behind a horrible mid-January snowstorm. .

Those are the ones I have right now. I’m still working my way through everything (HSR is taking over my brain, I love the Astral Express crew dynamic-)

(also I'm really disappointed we didn't get human Teddie dancing with the others. I need that boost of serotine of watching Yosuke and human Teddie try to dance together.)

On sexuality assumptions in Sherlock (part 1)

So there's one thing I never quite... understood about TJLC analysis. It's reading into lines in a way that hints at Johnlock or the sexuality of a character but with a caveat that the person saying the line is a massive bigot if you take that reading to be the writers' intention.

An example in ASIB with Sherlock is "here to see the Queen?" "apparently yes". Now even casuals (why does that feel like a dirty word in regards to bbc Sherlock) see this as a hint that Mycroft is gay. Now you can see this as a subtextual hint that he is gay, or that he's gay but Sherlock doesn't know and is calling him gay in a 12 year old humor way but Sherlock is not the type of person to do that? Neither is John "It's All Fine" Watson, who has a wlw sister.

Some even think that it's about Mark Gatiss being gay and not Mycroft, but that's it's a "cheap gay joke" nevertheless.

It's a rule that someone else making fun of your sibling is different than you doing it. And even if John isn't straight, he is presumed to be by all of the people who don't think he is dating Sherlock, and if he's closeted, then, to other people, he is a straight guy making fun of his flatmate's gay brother.

One bizarre example, from HLV, is the reading that Mycroft telling Sherlock "how very uncle Rudi. Perhaps crossdressing would have been a wiser path for you." is Mycroft teasing Sherlock about his (Sherlock, not Mycroft lol) romantic love towards John, who is presumably straight and that he could have tried to attract John by dressing up as a woman. And if that were true, that would be unbelievable levels of homophobic cruelty towards his little brother. How come Sherlock didn't physically assault him there and did for calling his actions "unwise", if that's really what Mycroft meant?

Or that Mycroft telling John to "choose a side" in ASIP is a hint towards John's bisexuality, but in the worst possible and most regressive way. Mycroft just felt like being being extremely biphobic atm I guess? Maybe I am sensitive because I do see him as bisexual simply because there was no option left, and I like the headcanon itself. But even if he is gay or straight or something else, there's no way he doesn't know bisexuality is a thing and this a hurtful thing to say to a bi person. Why would he do that? For all the jokes about Alastor finding skirts barely above the knee gently scandalizing, looking into 20s fashion actually showed me a lot about rising skirt hems during that era, specifically to be above the knee! However, they were always worn with stockings (which greatly popularized stockings as a whole around then) and it was a point of scandal that some people would roll their stockings down to just above their hem line, allowing them to flash a little bare skin when their skirts swished.

From the tidbits of Angel's backstory scattered around online, I figured that it's not unreasonable to headcanon his not being on good terms with his conservative-era probably-Catholic parents to be in part due to homophobia, so he's a little sensitive about the crossdressing and skimpy clothes, especially since he's aware that a lot of people see it as frivolous.

the chihiro fujisaki gender debate and transandrophobia

i saw another user post about their experience with transandrophobia in relation to headcanons of fictional characters and chihiro came up, so while it isn't the most important discussion point of transandrophobia i thought it could be interesting and useful to show how lateral aggression in the trans community often spills over to other communities which are barely trans related at all.

i will be using they/them pronouns for chihiro in this post since, as becomes clear later, there is no one single correct pronoun for them, so i am trying to keep it as neutral as possible.

this is also a long post, so for the sake of casual scrollers i'll get into it under the cut. i've also added bolding in places, mostly for easier reading for neurodivergent people rather than emphasis.

who is chihiro fujisaki?

spoilers for danganronpa: trigger happy havoc ch 2.

for those who aren't a part of the fandom, chihiro fujisaki is a character from the first game of the danganronpa series, a visual novel game series in which high schoolers are locked in a school and forced to murder one another in order to escape.

for the first part of the game, chihiro is referred to solely with she/her pronouns, because they present femininely and other characters assume them to be a girl. however, in the second chapter they are murdered and during their trial it is revealed that they were, quote unquote, "actually" a boy the whole time. it is said in the game (from secondary sources) that chihiro was bullied for being "weak" as a boy, so they decided to begin presenting as a girl to escape the bullying. however, as their secret was about to be revealed due to a plan of the organiser of the killing game, they decided that they would no longer accept their weakness, and went to the person they perceived as strongest and most "masculine" for help, mondo oowada. however, mondo was insecure in his own masculinity, and despite possessing physical strength held many regrets and feelings of weakness on the inside. chihiro's willingness to change and strength in that respect, in reaction to the idea of an awful secret of theirs being outed, scared mondo, as he was incredibly ashamed of his and reacted with fear to the idea. in a fit of retaliatory anger, he killed chihiro.

okay, so what's the controversy here?

as chihiro died, and their secret was only revealed to their classmates posthumously, chihiro's canon gender is unknown. many transfems have claimed that chihiro was written solely as a transmisogynistic trope, so cannot be headcanoned as anything other than transfeminine, as this is a "reclaimation" of that trope. however, another portion of the fandom perceived chihiro as simply a cis male crossdresser, and have argued against saying they can only be called transfeminine. another, smaller portion of the fandom headcanons chihiro as transmasculine, along with others who see them as transneutral (nonbinary, agender, genderfluid, etc).

let's break these viewpoints down.

(for the sake of relevancy, i will be omitting the view of people who believe chihiro to be nonbinary in this post solely because they are rarely involved in the discourse. indeed, many people who do not want to be involved at all choose this viewpoint as it is rarely contested and is seen by all sides as a sort of middle ground, so one can escape harassment for their headcanons in this way. yes, there's harassment.)

the cis male crossdresser theory

how the story goes according to this theory:

exactly as told above. chihiro was a cis crossdresser who presented femininely because they did not want to face their own perceived "weakness." the information given during the trial was accurate and chihiro was correctly gendered.

reasons for this theory:

can be perceived as a commentary on the effect of toxic masculinity and strict gender roles (this includes mondo's reaction

can be a comfort to gender-non-conforming people as well as a commentary on their lack of acceptance in general society

is what i personally think that the danganronpa writers were attempting to show as a message in the first place, a pertinent issue in japan (see "why isn't chihiro's character inherently transmisogynistic?")

how the story goes according to this theory:

chihiro fujisaki was a transfeminine person. they discovered this before the game and began presenting in a manner which made them feel happier. however, when there was a threat of them being outed as trans to their classmates, they went to see mondo. the next part can be perceived either as them wishing to detransition as a way to "improve" (yikes), or them telling mondo that they wanted to live their authentic self when the secrets were revealed, perhaps hoping for support and/or protection after explaining their gender. mondo reacted unfavourably which resulted in chihiro's death. during the trial chihiro was repeatedly misgendered after their "true gender" was revealed.

reasons for this theory:

can be a comfort to transfeminine people to know chihiro is like them, despite bad writing

can feel upset about chihiro's writing which they perceived as transphobic and therefore want to reclaim the character in a positive manner

chihiro's experiences can be highly relatable to transfeminine people (eg. fear of being outed, being bullied for living authentically, etc)

the transmasculine theory

how the story goes according to this theory:

chihiro fujisaki was a transmasculine person who was presenting in a way that made them feel comfortable. however, they experienced bullying which meant they had to detransition. they were uncomfortable presenting this femininely but felt they had to because they could not find acceptance as a boy. however, when there was a threat of them being outed as trans to their classmates, they feared the previous ridicule and went to see mondo for help on how they could present more masculinely and be more true to themself. mondo reacted unfavourably which resulted in chihiro's death. during the trial chihiro was referred to using masculine (their assumed preferred) pronouns once it was revealed they were a boy.

reasons for this theory:

can be a comfort to transmasculine people to know chihiro is like them, despite bad writing

where does transandrophobia come into this?

since transfems have claimed chihiro's character was written to be a transmisogynistic trope, anyone who thinks of them as anything other than transfeminine (+ nonbinary, due to the fact that nonbinary people CAN be transfeminine) is immediately shouted down. this includes believers of the cis male crossdresser theory, but also notably includes transmascs who saw themselves in chihiro. some of the ones i've been told while headcanoning chihiro as transmasc include "it's incredibly disrespectful to think of chihiro as afab at all," "headcanoning them as anything but transfeminine is transmisogynistic" "sit down and stop talking over transfems" "typical transmascs making everything about them."

as usual in the transandrophobia debate, a pretty large proportion of the people telling me this were "tmes." and that's where i got my very first taste of transandrophobia, where i wasn't allowed to relate to a character i liked, i wasn't allowed to think they were like me, because i "had enough representation" and "shouldn't be taking things away from transfems."

i'd understand this if the writer had straight out said chihiro's transfem. the thing is... chihiro doesn't have a canon gender. hell, they don't even have a canon agab.

"but there was that weird bit with kyoko where she felt their, uh, genitals when they were dead to discover their "true gender" !!" well, unless kyoko decided to be even more invasive about it (god was that bit intensely uncomfortable as a trans person in the first place), well... packers exist. it's entirely possible they could have been wearing one to make themself a tiny bit more comfortable.

but honestly ?? at the end of the day, all of this is speculation. all the information we received about chihiro was after their death, so they never had the chance to talk about their gender themself. and speculation is fine !! but attacking people based on it ?? yikes. (for anyone bringing up the new dr game, that isn't canon because... all the characters are meeting including dead ones and they're all at the beach. it's an extended beach episode.)

why isn't chihiro's character inherently transmisogynistic?

let's talk what i think danganronpa was trying to do with chihiro. with evidence.

japanese culture and its influence

(i am not japanese and do not live in japan, japanese people please correct me if i have made any mistakes. /srs)

danganronpa was made by a japanese company, for japanese people. so of course it's influenced by japanese cultural norms. japan isn't a particularly progressive country in terms of lgbtq+ acceptance. gay marriage is still illegal, there isn't much representation for lgbtq+ people in general, and most importantly, there are strict gender roles which, if not conformed to by someone, can quickly lead to the bullying and casting out of that person.

while chihiro's story may seem confusing to western viewers, for this reason it is far more relevant to japanese viewers. the concept of being trans is also far less shown/explained in japan due to widespread lgbtq+ prejudice. (not to say it's amazing in western countries, just that afaik it's more widespread in japan.) so japanese viewers are more likely to see a simple crossdresser whereas western viewers are more likely to see a trans person.

another cultural difference is pronouns. in the english version, many trans people may have found it jarring when the characters immediately switched to he/him pronouns when told chihiro was "really" a boy. however, in the japanese version this didn't happen. how?

well, in japanese, gendered terms are used far more often by the person themself than other people. japanese pronouns are mostly gender neutral, and other terms are used to express gender: eg. the word "boku," meaning "i/me" has masculine connotations and is often used by men or other masculine presenting people. so it was entirely possible to conduct the whole trial without using gendered pronouns for chihiro. which is what happened. however, this isn't a thing in english, so the translators had to make a choice, and they chose he/him pronouns.

the transmisogynistic slur

i hear "chihiro was called a transmisogynistic slur" a lot in this discourse recently, and i've scoured the games and anime for any sign of it, and no dice. however, i have found this panel from the manga adaptation.

let's break this down. the top male character, hifumi yamada, uses a word which is offensive towards transfems in reference to chihiro. it refers to a trope in which a female character turns out to "really" be a male. one can see easily how this continues the transphobia towards transfems.

before we go on i'd like to clarify i'm not defending the use of this word. it shouldn't be in here, but it is.

however, it's not too hard to figure out why it is there, and it isn't necessarily because of blatant, purposeful transphobia. the trope this word refers to is a common one in anime. hifumi is the ultimate fanfiction writer, and he's proven to be very knowledgeable on the subject of anime. it's pretty likely that he's come across this trope at some point, which causes him to use the word. while insensitive, it's in character.

additionally, this isn't a well-known slur. if he'd dropped the t slur in there this conversation would be over, because that's clear transphobia. i knew the t slur wasn't okay even before i knew i was trans. but the word actually used i only learned was offensive much further into my journey into the trans community. also? this slur also targets actual crossdressers, which is likely what they were getting at.

also, monokuma (the black and white bear in the lower panel) immediately complains about the use of the word. he condones murder (because. it's a killing game) but not this. that, in my opinion, shows that this was never intended as transphobic. the handling is, of course, iffy and therefore can be and is often interpreted as offensive, but it isn't a blatant attempt to spread hate. i'm not here to defend the makers of danganronpa by the way (they're already very questionable in other ways) but it's important to make this clear.

conclusion

the chihiro gender debate isn't small in the danganronpa community. it's calmed down a little, yes, but it's still very difficult to talk about chihiro without hitting into some of it, so much so that most chihiro-related posts have a warning at the bottom not to start discourse. and it disappoints me. a character of uncertain gender? which gnc and trans people alike are able to relate to? they could've been wonderful, a connection between us all. but, instead, people tried to force their views on each other, claim them as canon, and all chihiro is remembered for in the fandom is fights and blowouts. dnis saying dni if you think they're trans, dni if you think they aren't.

why does it matter? why do people need an absolutely canon view? why is it that a boy dressing as a girl is decided to be inherently transfem, and girls dressing as boys are decided to be the same? why is there such massive pushback on ALL trans people finding comfort in a character whose experiences they may relate to? why?

the chihiro gender discourse may not be a high profile case of the lack of transunitism and unity between trans and gnc people. it's not the most important. but it was my first taste of it, and it did colour my life for a while. it's time for change, not just within this comparatively small discourse space, but the trans community in general.
