Obviously, magic is a metaphor for being gay. It is something that you're born with, that you can't change, but that you have to hide because the society around you won't accept you. Both Merlin and Morgana are always saying that they've been made to feel like a monster, an outsider, and they just want to be accepted for who they really are. And it's no coincidence that they are the most queer coded characters in the whole show.

But building off of that subtext, I think that you can read the different way that Merlin and Morgana go about trying to achieve equal rights as being an allegory for queer identity politics, where Merlin embodies this homonationalist assimilation strategy. He believes that if he stays closeted and conforms to the status quo, then eventually he will prove that sorcerers are good, moral, normal people and therefore worthy of rights. But over time, he internalises all of this shame and self-hatred and becomes increasingly obsessed with Arthur and dependent on his validation until he becomes complicit in his own oppression.

Meanwhile, Morgana represents a radical rebellion ideology. Even though she comes from a place of privilege, she quickly realises that she can't achieve meaningful change through constitutional methods and therefore resorts to violent protest. But her downfall is that she's more motivated by personal vengeance than a genuine desire for equality. So she creates a lot of infighting within the community by shunning anyone whose ideas aren't as extreme as her own, and she inadvertently confirms all of the negative stereotypes about 'angry witches' that she has been trying to fight against.

Obviously I don't think that all of this political commentary is intentional, but the basic idea of magic being gay is definitely intentional. As evidenced by this quote from the executive producer of the show, where he says very sarcastically, "some people say that (magic) is a metaphor for his sexuality, but that's just read in by them, isn't it? On no level is magic metaphorical in this show." And then Katie McGrath says, "it's funny because I don't actually think you're being sincere." And then she says directly to the audience, "Julian is lying right now."

I need to rant about something:

Looking up Overhaul’s name on TikTok is stressful because you either get a nice edit, funny videos, clips of him from the show, or an art video. But also there’s a chance you get hate videos about him, cringe videos from like 2020, or people calling him a pedophile and it’s so annoying!

I know there’s people that don’t like him and I can completely understand, but the annoying part is just finding so many hate videos of him if you actually like him or seeing people say he looks or is a pedophile {which he doesn’t, people who say that are weirdos}. I just wanna find some nice videos but I keep twitching and getting so pissed when I see videos like this, like are we watching the same show and are we looking at the same character?? Because I don’t think so.

I just had to block an account that said the first time they saw Overhaul he looked like a pedo and it’s like WHAT…? Just, the MHA fandom on TikTok irritate me sometimes with the misinformation or mischaracterization. Overhaul is not a good person, whether you love or hate him we can’t defend his actions. {and if you do that’s a little…odd…} But still shit like this so so crazy. I just wanna chill on TikTok and have a laugh while looking at videos about him but instead of laughter I’m getting angry, WHICH IS TOTALLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WANT!! 😭

What makes it worse, before all this. Couple days ago I made a TikTok account called “overhauls.eyelashes” it’s an account all about Overhaul. Reason why I made it? Because I know how people are and I get nervous posting specific videos about him on my main. So I made that account so I wouldn’t be as scared to post the certain videos I want on my main account. I could just shut the comments off or make it to where it’s just my friends commenting if I’m so worried yes, but…I love interaction on my post and letting others comment so I can find my people or let them find theirs! Which is why I get pure anxiety when I have a certain video idea of Overhaul but the fear makes it hard to post on my main but luckily now I have that new TikTok account.

Although the problem I wanna address is this morning when I woke up this morning I went to go check on a recent post I had made the night before to see if I got some comments.{also to see the views, likes, and saves} I had decent amount of those but only had two comments which was fine because the account is new so I’m not gonna get much attraction right now. You of all people can testify for me! LMAO. I've been on Tumblr since I'm pretty sure I was 12 or 13—which was not good for my mental development—and I'm 25 years old now. I literally remember when Tumblr would only let you put 1 photo in a photo post. Like, you could not put like 3 or 4 photos. So, when gifsets then were first being made, I literally witnessed it myself and remember people suddenly bursting with a ton of new creativity. I was there during the 4Chan raids and when people used to put music playing in the background of their blog themes! It's just that I've just deleted my blogs when I got tired of fandoms and wanted a new fresh start. My first blog went band blog → harry potter (cringe) → multi-fandom. My second blog went from football/soccer → multi-fandom. And this one is video games, star wars, and comics.

I even remember metal fans back in the day before streaming said if you've never listened to or bought at least one of a band's albums you should not call yourself a fan. Like, that's actually pretty strict! Over here, we're not even asking you to play all the video games in the series, because there's a lot and some consoles don't let you play the older games. And some people might not have money to do so. But at least watch recordings of the games that people post 3–4 hours of on YouTube for this very reason.

There was a creator I followed (I still follow him, actually) that posted videos that were essentially fan fiction of a game with a self-insert OC. Was it cringe? Yes, but myself and a number of other people really enjoyed it.

See, a year before he was cancelled, this guy actually did something problematic- he said some ignorant things about sexual assault, but ended up resolving things privately with the individuals involved (I believe all but one accepted his apology).

What happened is he tried and failed to talk about something he didn’t understand. What people not even involved in the situation did was take this as an opportunity to make stuff up and cancel him. Basically someone started a rumor saying he a was pedophile- and when I say rumor, I *do* mean rumor. Nobody even accused him of anything. It was literally just “I saw a tweet/tiktok/etc where someone said they heard he was a pedophile”. The only “proof” people ever provided was that he shipped his self-insert OC with an 18 year old character from the game he did that fanfic RP with. Before you ask, no, she isn’t a lolicon or anything like that. There’s no way you could mistake her for a child. Their reasoning was that “18 is practically still a minor”, therefore, pedophile.

The thing is, this guy never got mad about criticism. He’d actually listen to the most absurd things, the reason he got into hot water in the first place was because people were threatening to cancel him if he DIDNT talk about that instance of sexual harassment, even though he didn’t know anyone involved in it- it just happened to involve creators that played the same video game. He didn’t even fight back against the pedophile rumors- he just said on a more private platform that he’s leaving social media until he can figure out how to make things right. How messed up is that.

My point is, people will ruin your life for nothing more than being “cringe”. They literally don’t care about the person behind screen. And if you fight back against these people? You just give them all the more reason to do these things. Its so messed up.

Yes that is very much possible. Other headmates can split other headmates or can cause walk ins or can cause spiritual connections! It happens often and all the time!

As for fakeclaiming, unfortunately it does and will happen. There's always going to be places like systems cringe and their ilk who have no real knowledge on the matter but want to pretend that they do. The best you can do for yourself? Block. Block the tags, block antis, avoid the places you know will have those people. We purposefully don't post as a system on tiktok because majority of systems on tiktok are antis who just can't keep their mouths shut about it. Filter your comments. Use those things that social medias have given you to be able to curate your experience and curate it. Tumblr has a filter system, tiktok has a filter system for comments and I THINK they have a filter system for videos now too but I haven't used it yet tbh, idk about Twitter we straight up refuse to use Twitter period so that's something you would have to figure out on your own. When it does happen? Just block them. Don't engage. Don't even bother reading the full message. Just block them or delete the comment or both. They are not worth the time. They don't know you or your system and they certainly don't have the knowledge or understanding of systems and the like to say whether any of this is true. We've had four separate therapists and while we are traumagenic (as far as we're aware completely but could be only mostly as we're not 100% sure) that we've mentioned endogenic systems to just talking about antis and complaining and they all have am agreement that other people do not get to decide what is actually going on inside another person's head and the field of psychological study is entirely based on observation, rather than observation + testing that observation/theory based on said observation. You are the deciding factor in what is and is not happening to you. Not some random on the internet. Block them, filter the words you need to, stay away from the community areas that you know they thrive in. Those are the best things you can do.

This is just a quick train of thought post but I still wanna share it

Either way I’ve seen this phenomenon where people hate the mha fandom because of how shippy it is. People want to act like bc this shonen then that means romance hardly exists. But you’ve got to understand how fandom EVOLVES!

I’ve not been in this fandom for long. Maybe since October of 2021. But I HAVE been in other fandoms before. Fnaf, undertale, and Minecraft come to mind first. (The old and new mc fandom btw, yes I watched dsmp. I don’t like the creators now but the fandom taught me how to analyze storytelling so ??? Idk how to feel about the fandom with my fondness lmao) And after a bit of research, pre-existing knowledge I have of the internet as a whole, and a TON of thinking and mulling it over in my head, I’ve come to my personal conclusion of why THIS FANDOM SPECIFICALLY gets so much hate and is so “shippy”.

The actual reason the fandom itself is so focused on ships and characters is because horikoshi writes characters well. Simple as that. It’s a character driven show, and compared to other shonens that’s a bit out of character for a show of the “genre”.

Anyway, let’s give a bit of background to the general internet. Up until about I wanna say, 2018? The internet was really really bad. The main social platforms running the show were YouTube, instagram, Reddit, and Twitter. Tiktok wasn’t exactly a thing, it was musically or however it’s spelled. 4chan was also still relatively popular as was tumblr. Tumblr is an interesting character during this time but I’ll get into that.

The general ideas of the internet were all relatively “right leaning” and cringe culture was still VERY rampant. This is because when the internet and, more specifically, the gaming community was being born the alt right communities that were pretty small migrated to the internet. This made a trade off: in exchange for organizational power they now had more reach. That’s why nazis and bigots have always been so common on the internet. It’s also why a lot of our amab siblings, children, uncles, etc in their teen years were so far gone into the alt right pipeline. It directly targets young white boys who like video games. YT created a lot of parasocial relationships by letting those people get the platforms they did. (I recommend watching “the alt right play book” by innuendo studios, they voice this better than I did)

The anime community, parts of the art community, 4chan/Reddit, and political spaces online were filled to the brim with nazis due to this phenomena.

And here’s comes tiktok. A platform who just gave themself a brand new face and name ready to start the trend of shorter videos instead of images or longer videos. At first, we still have the remnants of the alt right with the furry vs gamer war specifically, and then comes vsco girls. And you know what’s so weird about this trend? They TRIED to memeify it, they TRIED to shame women into not getting metal straws, into not dressing in the certain style. But it was a turning point in the entire worlds political spectrum. More specifically, gen y and gen z.

This was the start of a “new era” on the internet. And TikTok’s algorithm is probably the best one I’ve ever fucking seen! It was able to completely cut people off from different ideas and parts of the platform, while simultaneously sharing content that would make people argue. This, was tiktok 2020. BLM happened as a trend (blm has been around for a lot longer than tiktok, it was just a trend on the platform itself), trumps rallies happened. For the first time organization on a platform fucking worked. It was what the alt right WANTED to do, but never could.

Now, why am I saying all of this? Because tiktok opened the gate to fandom. For the first time since I’ve been on the app, (and I was on in 2018) fandom has started to pop up more. Toh and some anime communities have gotten more popular there.

But given this context, it starts to make sense why people HATE that it’s so shippy. Tumblr was the weird kid of the internet for a long time, and as that’s shifted to being 4chan, I’ve got to say that shipping and the mha fandom (along with other more known “toxic” fandoms) has gotten to a point where it’s more socially acceptable. And since a show like stranger things can now have a fandom, I can solidly say that fandom has become more mainstream because TIKTOK is mainstream.

So, yeah, people hate fandom and more specifically the mha fandom because of nazis. Cringe culture still exists and it’s kinda hard to not think a fandom that’s already been painted as terrible is actually, not all that bad. It’s like literally every other fandom. Stranger things has the same problems we do, death note has the same problems we do. Mha is not an exception.

You were only crying because of a video of a grandpa smiling you saw on TikTok, but you are a snake, and so you put those tears to good use. If streaming doesn’t work out, you’ll just become an actress. Hollywood would love you. Your PR firm sure as fuck wouldn’t, though.

Rae was having none of it. She said you’ll figure it out eventually. Told you to channel your superior puzzle skills. You were quick to remind her that you can barely count to ten without having an aneurysm. Oddly serious, she admitted that she worries for you sometimes. Why only sometimes?! you demanded. She merely sighed. uttering under her breath something that sounded closely to “Boke.”

You leave her for barely a week and she’s already neck deep in the gay volleyball anime, hoodie and cardboard cutout and everything. Your life is falling apart.

But Brooklyn is nice. It had snowed when you stepped off of the plane. Thousands of snowflakes sprinkling into your hair, dotting your cheeks and nose. You missed this sight back in Cali. You missed your parents, too. 

Home cooked meals, old sweaters, your old room and about 40GB worth of old high school pictures on your computer. You went through them all one night. Some were stomach churning, cringe inducing nightmares. You were especially fond of those. Texted some of your friends that were still in Brooklyn, met up, decided to bake. Bad idea, Rae was the resident chef back in Cali. Besides laughing till your stomach hurt, and almost burning down your kitchen, nothing all that significant happened. Somewhere down the line, at about 3 am, half-way through a cheesy rom-com you had the overwhelming urge to text Corpse.

That’s where the problems really started. God, you missed California, missed being in the same timezone with a guy you hadn’t even met yet, how embarrassing is that?! You missed skating around and taking pictures of the beach in the setting sun, sending it to him, silently wishing he was with you to admire the view. 

You really want to call him. And to hang out with him. But for some reason, the thought of that springs up immediate anxiety and you shy away from asking. Him sending you cute good morning texts doesn’t help, either. Maybe it’s better he doesn’t know that you’re a blushing, stuttering mess each time you read “baby”. 

Late evening. Your stream is already set up, people are slowly trickling in and you greet them with a grin and a soft “Hello! Hi hi!”. You did your best to make your room a perfectly chaotic backdrop - led lights, an embarrassing amount of anime merch and plushies. You always try to balance out your weeb side by dressing hot as fuck for your streams - today’s inspiration just so happens to be egirls. Mostly because you watched one too many egirl make-up tutorials on TikTok, and also because you’ve been listening to Corpse’s song all day.

Yeah, no, who are you kidding, you dressed up this way because you were hoping Corpse was watching your stream. You didn’t forget your cat headphones, either. You know he likes them. You want to make him suffer. Perhaps then, finally, he will ask you out, so you wouldn’t have to.

“I’m live right now,” You tell her, pointing at your screen. She knows this already, though, “do you want to say hi?” 

The roaches spam the chat with friendly hellos. You mom, quite impatient now, waves you over.

Stopping the stream, you rush out of your seat and pleased she slinks into the hallway. “What’s this about?”

“Your pizza came.”

“My what now?” You echo, confused.

“Domino’s. You ordered pizza?”

Thankfully, you had managed to grab your phone from your room before you exited. You almost choke on spit once you read the messages.

If anyone was ever to ask you where did your chaotic nature come from, you’d answer with my mom. To make yourself feel better, you took a selfie - duck face and peace sign and the horrible 2000′s angle. Sent it to Rae.

yeah the odds for a full 100% happy ending for cfiances are Slim, especially since they're all at uh. very different lore wrap up stages. the lnv finale is very likely going to be the end of quackity's character. the odds for cdream dying or /p dreamnap somehow reconciling in that stream are even lower than the fiances wedding so it's definitely not gonna be the narrative end for sapnap. and im not even touching ckarl with a ten feet pole. i saw the ghost post btw, i am very much hoping that ccq isn't just gonna kill his character off entirely. atleast he's gonna wrap his story up, which is something which i've only heard a few ccs talk about. rip cranboo i guess. literally.

honestly, if we're looking at the scene from a doylist perspective the most likely interpretation is proabably just that ccsapnap wasn't prepared to rp a mental flip on his fiance And his murderhobo bestie. in character he probably he just filed it away for later when he wasn't actively preparing to fight dream.

Honestly if that did happen in lore I would just be cheering on for c!Dream getting his cool moment of revenge I think he's earned it by now and I don't think he does whenever he brings up c!Sam or any of his other dsmp oriented proyects it's only to talk about what more things he wants to do to my knowledge he hasn't really spoken ever about putting an end to the server or to any of his characters and I don't really think he wants to he seems to have a lot of fun in it and he's part of the members who have been on it the longest after all

you set your phone down on the coffee table then hit record, leaning back and shuffling even closer to iwaizumi on the couch. this caught his attention so his eyes momentarily shifted off the tv to look at you with a perplexed expression which became more prominent once he noticed that he was also being filmed.

“wha--” he cut himself off upon feeling your lips press against his forehead, then his cheek, then his chin; basically his whole face had felt your affection by the time the sound finished. 

he was taken aback, to say the least. the whole thing went by in a blur - a pleasant blur, but a blur none the less. he was too busy enjoying the feeling of your soft lips against his skin to realise that his resting expression looked similar to the one he wore when walked in on matsukawa and makki comparing dick sizes in the changing room.

once you pulled away and grabbed your phone to watch the video, he got the opportunity to observe the stupid look he wore and he instinctively tried to snatch the phone from your hand. This resulting in him lying on top of you on the couch, suffocating you with his cologne, trying to grab your phone but the frantic flailing of your arms posed challenge. 

“Gimme that damn phone! Don’t you dare send that to anyone! Did you see my fac--”

“Iwa, get the fuck off me!” you wheezed, your voice muffled from his beefy chest being pushed against your face.

once you finally pull away to grab your phone, you held it in between you and bokuto so he could watch it along with you. he bounced giddily in place, squeezing your other hand tightly, “you’re precious, (y/n).” he muttered before pumping his fists and cheering, “post it! post it! post it! post it!”

“you’re so boring, issei.” you whined, trying to conceal the fact your pout was slowly becoming a smile. “You were supposed to rail me, that’s the whole point of the trend.” you joked, not expecting for matsukawa’s hand to immediately latch onto your throat, “hah, well, you could’ve just asked nicely, doll.”

but what he didn’t expect was for you pounce on him then start covering his face in kisses. at first, he crinkles his nose and chuckled but just as you were about to say the second bit of dialog, an idea hit him. so without thinking, he gripped your throat then flipped y’all over so he was now on top, then he pressed his lips against your forehead while making the ‘mwah’ sound effect.

this took you by surprise so the last frame of the video was of you looking truly shocked and him looking down on your with a suggestive smirk - which was followed up by a sweet kiss but the video cut off before that. 

you both stared at the video as it replayed, neither of you liking what you were seeing. 

fukunaga was the first one to mention it though as he scrambled off you to grab your phone, “gimme that! you’re camera makes me look so weird.” you allowed him to yank your phone from your hands as you folded your hands behind your head, “my camera. sure.”

“Oh, sorry. I thought this was the guest dressing room.”

“You’re in the right place! Come in.” Heechul said enthusiastically to the soft-spoken, head bowed Renjun who, just like the Three of you, was already in school uniform.

He briefly greeted his senior before facing you. “Hello, I’m Renjun. I though we would only have me as the temporary host as the guest though.” He said, confused lacing his voice as both of you shook hands.

You chuckled at this before nodding. “Yeah, I’m also a guest host. I think our agency forgot to mention that. Nice meeting you too, sunbaenim. I’m yn.”

“Ah that sounds weird, just call me Renjun.” He visibly cringed when you called him sunbae.

You laughed at his reaction but nodded. After a few more exchanged conversation, you continued with the tiktok but now with Renjun.

“We were in a relationship for the past 4 months, but we called it off since we need to focus on our careers first.” You said as you stood up from the chair, following your sentence with a laugh as Heechul looked at you wide eye. “Oh, the staff is calling us. We should go.”

but then said a very grateful goodbye to the fans and the staff

that night though, as you were about to call it a night

it has been 2 months since the last episode filming for kb

and you became the host for Show Champn not long after

along with you were Jaehyun and Naeun

still, you and renjun could just never get away from each other

each interview you would have people would ask if the both of you kept in touch

and how was working with renjun, if not all of the kb host

renjun is dealing with something similar

but since dream would have a comeback

it was just time until you would cross paths again

however, you did have to pay SM a visit since you need to practice an opening number with Jaehyun

you were supposed to be with Naeun but your schedules didn’t aligned

after a brief greeting, the both of you started to practice

which wasn’t really that hard 

so it only took a few hours before the both of you called it a night

with your manager, you were simply lounging at the sm cafe when you received a text from renjun

you chuckled at your own reply, knowing he already knows why you were here but would definitely confuse him.

the last time the both of you talked to each other was at the last day of filming, the rest are just social media interactions and some mentions.

instead of him being confused, it seems like it was you who was more confused.

you fixed your position and pulled your phone closer to you.

you then struck up a conversation with your manager, telling him how renjun invited you and at first, he didn’t allowed it as some fans might see and perceived it differently and you have an early taping tomorrow.

but after more persuading and promising to come back at the dorms in less than an hour, he eventually agreed. giving you a specific instruction to text the company driver once you’re done.

you then texted renjun right after, telling him that your manager agreed. instead of replying through text, he opted to call you instead and told you how he was going to come down to get you and told you to go to the elevators.

as soon as you arrived at the elevators, he was already there and the both of you dropped the call.

after greeting each other briefly, he guided you to their dorms. following him at the elevators as he pressed a number. as the doors closed, he leaned to the side, same as you. “how was working with jaehyun-hyung?”

“he’s amazing, very gentle guy.”

“who is the better sunbae though?”

you pretended to think for a bit, which renjun replied by looking at you with disgust, earning a laugh from you. “of course it’s you.” renjun nodded, satisfied.

silence then followed, just as when he seems like he is about to say something, the elevator doors opened. he let you out first, waiting for him once you get out so the both of you side by side.

before you could even reach their dorms, you could already hear yelling. and once renjun opened the door, you could see the dreamies scattered over the place. the most prominent once was jeno and jisung slapping each other’s hands, even hearing a “let’s wait for yn-”

renjun groaned at the sight and turned to you. “I’m so sorry you have to see them like this, it’s usually not this messy and noisy. Most of the time they’re asleep.”

you only laughed at this, renjun introducing you to each other soon after and was finally able to get a taste of the cupcakes they made. 

admittedly, it wasn’t the best. but it was edible and above average for someone who only started out baking and only did it because the video games were lagging.

you offered to do the dishes but was then denied by almost everyone, telling you that you were the guest and it wasn’t nice to clean up their mess. because of this, you were given some time with renjun, who invited you to his room.

as you entered, you noticed how not a lot changed. you have been here before, but mostly when no one was around beside you and him.

“hey, you still have porkchop!” you exclaimed, grabbing the blue and yellow fish you from renjun’s bedside.

he chuckled while nodding, even if you couldn’t see as you were too busy examining 1/2 of the prize you got from a game you played at kb. 

“of course, do you still have fillet?”

“yeah, just showered her and all yesterday too.” you answered, referring to the small pig stuff toy that has a pajama outfit.

you placed porkchop back at his position before walking to his chair, renjun sitting down at the edge of the bed facing you. “soooo, how have you been?” renjun asked, nervousness lacing his voice.

you just nodded in reply. “the hosting isn’t easy nowadays since we’re about to start preparations for our comeback but yeah, it’s something I could handle.” you leaned back to the chair as you answered, renjun nodding at your answer. “how about you? missing me enough to invite me, huh?” you joked.

“to be honest, I do. I saw how you were having fun with jaehyun-hyung, you really do know how to leave an impression you work with.” his replied caught you off guard.

you were speechless, not knowing what to say. your eyes started looking around the room, but his eyes on you was burning too much for you not to feel. as you are supposed to respond, your phone rang.

you sighed and pulled it out, seeing it was the company driver. after a short acknowledgement, you closed your phone again and look at renjun with frustrations. “I’m sorry, I have to go.”

renjun smiled at this and nodded, standing up from his bed the same time you stood up from the chair as he stretched a bit. “let me walk you to the elevator?”

you nodded at this, renjun opening the door to let you out first. saying your goodbye to the members as you and renjun walked the empty hallways, renjun sprinting out a bit as an elevator was about to close.

you thanked him as you stepped in. “thanks for today, renjun-ah.” 

“no problem, yn.” you were looking at him as the elevators doors was closing in. when there was barely anything of renjun left, you let out a sigh and immediately pressed the open button, startling renjun was about to walk away from the elevator. “did you forgot anything?”

“maybe we should get dinner sometime, just the two of us. soon.”

renjun smiled widely at this, before nodding. “sure, just tell me when you’re available?”

“yeah. okay now I really need to go, bye renjun.”

“text me when you’re home so I know, I’ll see you around yn.”

I got a bit long-winded on these answers, so I’ll put them behind a readmore!

1. What made you decide to start writing or arting (assuming you write or do art)?

I can’t say I ever consciously decided to start writing - I’ve just always loved reading, and when I first got a school assignment for a creative story, I decided I never wanted to stop!

In terms of art, though, it was sparked by a similar thing: the Dragonology book. My first story was about a dragon in there, and part of that assignment was to make illustrations to accompany it, and I decided I needed to learn how to draw dragons. From there, I just fell in love with making a blank page into something I could look at and enjoy, and I’ve been drawing ever since!

2. What do you like to do more: photo editing or video editing?

Oh, this is a hard one... Video editing is fun for me, especially because, when I make videos, I tend to do speedpaints with commentary, and cutting my ramblings down to a manageable size is so satisfying. On the other hand, I like taking fairly mundane pictures and making them magical...

I’d say, for satisfaction levels, video editing wins. For the actual process, I think photo editing is my favorite!

3. Which do you prefer: YouTube or TikTok?

YouTube, 100%. The only TikToks I’ve ever seen have been sent to me by friends, and I don’t particularly like short videos like that? If it were Vine, though, Vine would win ;aslkdjf

4. How many books have you read in the last 5 years?

A lot, LOL

My favorite have been Six of Crows, The Stormlight Archive, Red rising, and The Fallen Empire!

5. Do you tend to post more cheery/cutesy things, silly things or more serious things to your blog?

I think silly things are the most common? I like to meme with my WIPs, since I just. love meme culture. And I like making jokes about things - it’s a quick and easy way to get myself to smile!

6. How long have you been on Tumblr? Just ramble for a minute about some changes you’ve noticed about the site.

I made my first Tumblr blog in 2013, and I kept that one up until about April of last year, I think, before I decided to remake. 

The biggest change I’ve seen is the shift from sharing things to consuming things, in terms of like, reblog to like ratios and whatnot. Also, the amount of discourse has stayed about the same, but it’s changed in subject for the most part. But fandom discourse is still pretty much the same, just with different shows, now.

Also, reaction gifs have faded out of use pretty heavily since I started. At least, in the areas I’ve been in.

7. If the staff of tumblr came up to you, genuinely wanting advice on how to improve the site, what advice/request(s) would you give them?

I would tell them to rename likes into bookmarks. Also, lift the nsfw ban, and make it so that in order for 18+ blogs to be viewed, the user has to be 18+. Yes, people lie about their age, but so many sex workers lost their audiences and sources of income because of it, and it legitimately threw away a third of the userbase in one hit. 

Also, no matter the pressures from other social sites, don’t make this site less anonymous. It’s one of the beauties of Tumblr - I’m never going to have a boss find my blog and know for sure that it’s me.

8. What was the most challenging thing about starting your favorite hobby? How did you get past it, if you ever did?

Well, at the time I started drawing, the biggest obstacle was finding a way to learn. The art classes in school were never trying to teach us how to draw something, just showing us that we could. I ended up getting “How to draw manga” books and looking up stuff on YouTube.

9. What do you think other people think of when they think of you? For instance, with me, most people think about either tomatoes, chinchillas or black cats, depending on the person and how long they’ve known me.

Well, I hope they think of my jokes, first of all a;lskdjf;aslkdfj

But in terms of like, objects or animals? Sketchbooks, pride flags, and dinosaurs.

10. If every animal except one specific species went extinct but you got to pick which one didn’t go extinct, which species would you pick?

Hmmmmmmm... probably Komodo Dragons. I really like big lizards :)

11. What do YOU feel makes the world go round?

Laughter! Or, really, anything that makes people smile!

12. What would you say to a person if you heard them talking shit about your best friend?

This has actually happened before, and they were saying it to my face without knowing we were best friends. I sat there, nodded along, and when they were done, just said “You know they’ve been my best friend for like, 7 years, right?”

They went so pale it was kind of funny.

13. What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you that has stuck with you?

This was more something they did, but when I was going through a nasty friend break up, I texted them, and within 5 minutes they were at my house, texting that person furiously, and letting me cry on them, even though they’re not a very emotional person themself ;-; I felt so loved in that moment, you have no idea.

14. What was the greatest piece of life advice you’ve ever gotten?

You have the rest of your life to wake up and decide who you’re going to be that day, and you should never feel bad about changing who that is from one day to the next.

It was said in the context of me realizing that I wasn’t genderfluid, I was transmasc, and my ongoing crisis over whether I’m fully a guy, or if I’m a bit more fluid than that. It’s helped me a lot with accepting that I might not have all the answers right now, and I don’t need all the answers all the time.

15. What one or two aspects of your childhood personality would you bring back to your current personality if you could?

Honestly? My willingness to just make things, and not care about how they turned out. I made so much art that I cringe at now, but I was learning, and that’s all that matters, really.

It’s time to pay serious attention to TikTok

If you haven’t been paying attention to TikTok, you haven’t been paying attention. The short-form video app hailing from Beijing’s ByteDance just had its biggest month ever with the addition of 75 million new users in December — a 275 percent increase from the 20 million it added in December 2017, according a recent report from Sensor Tower.

Despite its rapid rise, there are still plenty of people — often, older people — who aren’t quite sure what TikTok is.

TikTok is often referred to as a “lip-syncing” app, which makes it sound like it’s some online karaoke experience. But a closer comparison would be Vine, Twitter’s still sorely missed short-form video app whose content lives on as YouTube compilations.

While it’s true that TikTok is home to some standard lip-syncing, it’s actually better known for its act-out memes backed by music and other sound clips, which get endlessly reproduced and remixed among its young users.

Its tunes are varied — pop, rap, R&B, electro and DJ tracks serve as backing for its 15-second video clips. But the sounds may also be snagged from YouTube music videos (see: I Baked You A Pie above), SoundCloud or from pop culture — like weird soundbites from Peppa Pig or Riverdale — or just original creations.

These memes-as-videos reference things familiar to Gen Z, like gaming culture (see below). They come in the form of standalone videos, reactions, duets, mirrors/clones and more.

The app has been growing steadily since it acquired its U.S.-based rival Musical.ly in November 2017 for north of $800 million, then merged the two apps’ user bases last August.

This gave TikTok the means to grow in Western markets, where it has attracted the interest of U.S. celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Tony Hawk, for example, along with YouTubers on the hunt for the next new thing.

But unlike Vine (RIP), YouTube or Instagram, TikTok doesn’t yet feel dominated by micro-celebs, though they certainly exist.

Instead, its main feed often surfaces everyday users — aka, amateurs — doing something cute, funny or clever, with a tacit acknowledgement that “yes, this is an internet joke” underlying much of the content.

Okay, okay.

Sometimes these videos are described as “cringey.” 

But that’s because those of us trying to talk about TikTok are old(er) people who grew up on the big ol’ mean internet.

Cringey, frankly, is an unfair label, as it dismisses TikTok’s success in setting a tone for its community. Here, users will often post and share unapologetically wholesome content, and receive less mocking than elsewhere on the web — largely because everyone else on TikTok posts similar “cringey” content, too.

You might not know this, however, if your only exposure to TikTok comes from YouTube’s TikTok Cringe Compilations. But spend a day in the (oddly addictive) TikTok feed, and you’ll find a whole world of video that doesn’t exist anywhere else on the web — including on YouTube. Videos that are weird, sure — but also fun to watch.

It’s a stark comparison to the existing social media platforms.

Users today are engaged in the culture wars on Twitter (ban the Nazis! protect free speech!), while YouTubers are gaming the algorithm with hateful, exploitive, dangerous and otherwise questionable content that freaks out advertisers. And Facebook is, well, contributing to war crimes and the toppling of democracy.

Meanwhile, TikTok presents an alternative version of online sharing. Simple, goofy, irreverent — and frankly, it’s a much needed reset.

For example, some of the popular TikTok memes have included videos of kids proclaiming what a great mom they have, as they drag her into frame, or they remind people to pick up litter and conserve water. They might give themselves silly, but self-affirming makeovers where, afterwards, they cite themselves not as “cute” but rather “drop. dead. gorgeous.”

They might spend hours setting up gummy bears as Adele concert-goers, learning how to do a shuffle dance up a set of stairs or in a dance battle their dad. Or they may showcase some special talent — drawing, painting, gymnastics, dance or skateboarding, perhaps. They do science experiments, make jokes or use special effects for a little video magic.

They shout out “hit or miss!” in public places and wait to see who answers. (Look it up.)

Sometimes it’s dumb, Sometimes it’s clever. But it’s addictive.

Of course, it is still the internet. And TikTok isn’t perfect.

The app has also been the subject of troubling reports about its “dark” side, which is reportedly filled with child predators and teens bullying and harassing one another. It’s not clear, however, that TikTok’s affliction with these matters is any worse than any other large, social, public-by-default app of its size.

And unlike some apps, concerned parents — or the users themselves — can set a TikTok account to private, turn off commenting, hide the account from search, disable downloads, disallow reactions and duets and restrict an account from receiving messages.

It is concerning, however, that under-13 kids are setting up social media accounts without parental consent. (But, uh, have you seen Fortnite and Roblox? This is what kids do. At least the TikTok main feed isn’t worrisome, we’ve found.)

The bigger issue, though — and one that could ultimately prove damaging to TikTok — is whether it will be able to keep up with content filtering and takedown requests, or handle its security and privacy protection issues as it scales up.

Content and community aren’t the only things contributing to TikTok’s growth.

While Vine may have introduced the concept of short-form video, TikTok made video editing incredibly simple. You don’t need to be a video expert to put together clips with a range of effects. It’s the Instagram for the mobile video age — in a way that Instagram itself won’t be able to reproduce, having already aligned its community with influencers and advertisers.

TikTok’s sizable user base, meanwhile, is due not only to its growth in Western markets, but because of its traction in emerging markets like China and India.

This allowed TikTok to rank No. 4 worldwide across iOS and Android, combined, according to App Annie’s data on the most-downloaded apps of 2018. On iOS, TikTok was the No. 1 most-downloaded app of the year, mainly thanks to China.

At times last year, TikTok even ranked higher than Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube.

Both App Annie and Sensor Tower agree that TikTok scored the No. 3 position for most installs among all apps worldwide in 2018.

Now, TikTok is growing in India, says Sensor Tower.

The country accounted for 27 percent of new installs between December 2017 and December 2018, and last month was the source for 32.3 million of TikTok’s 75 million total new downloads — a 25x increase from last year.

Some of this growth comes from ad spend, according to a report from Apptopia, which examined the app’s widened use of ad networks. (It’s also driving people bonkers with its YouTube ads).

The revenue is starting to arrive, as well.

Worldwide, users spent $6 million tipping their favorite live streamers, a 253 percent year-over-year jump from December 2017’s total of $1.7 million, Sensor Tower estimates. But live streaming is not the default activity on TikTok — it added the feature after shutting down Musical.ly’s live streaming app, Live.ly.

TikTok is also starting to test in-app advertising, and is being eyed by agencies as a result. When you launch TikTok, you may see a full-page splash screen ad of some kind — though the company has not officially launched ad products.

But the brands are starting to take notice. This week, for example, TikTok collaborated with SportsManias, an officially licensed NFL Players Association partner, for the introduction of NFL-themed AR animated stickers in time for the Super Bowl. The move feels like a test for how well branded content will perform within the TikTok universe, but the company says it’s “not an ad deal.”

The company also declined to say how many are today using TikTok.

However, parent company ByteDance had publicly stated last year that it had 500 million monthly active users when it announced the app’s rebranding post-merger. It has yet to release new numbers for its global user base.

That said, ByteDance just shared updated stats for China only, on all versions of the TikTok app (including the non-Google Play Android version). It says that TikTok now has 500 million monthly active users in China alone.

Sensor Tower today estimates TikTok has grown to nearly 800 million lifetime installs, not counting Android in China.

Factoring in those Android in China installs, it’s fair to say this app has topped 1 billion downloads.

Here comes the new new internet, folks. It’s big, dominated by emerging markets, mobile, video, meme-ified, and goes viral both online and off.

So if you haven’t been paying attention to TikTok, you may want to get started.
