Followup question to an ask I sent, idk maybe a month ago, about how yall feel about the whump or hurt/comfort community/genre and their approach to plots that often involve some kind of disability. My new question is a bit more meta. What is the most respectful way to interact with posts we wish to save/share/reference for realism in whump writing? What's the rule of thumb tagging guide?

I know #disabled-whumpee instead of clogging support tags for tagging actual fics, but what about reference posts? Would it be considered rude to reblog an irl disability post onto my whump writing blog as #irl-disability or the like?

I believe that adding realism to fics is good for multiple reasons, but I worry saving posts like that to reference would be considered trivializing real struggles.

Also I don't know if I said it in my first ask, If there's anything overall you would like to see handled better, I would like to hear your opinion. I don't approach this genre with disability rep as the goal but I understand that bad representation can be harmful whether it was meant as rep or not. By nature disabled whumpees often fall into the disabled by trauma trope, and because of that I want to limit any other disrespect or harm I could be perpetuating.

I'm sure that a lot of disabled people won't care, but just don't. Don't use real people's venting or talking about their disability or ableism they experience as some sort of angst inspo. That's what writing resources are for, and I know well that there are a lot of them in the whump space because a lot of them reblog from us. I know that some people in that space also talked about this topic before.

I know a lot of people in the disability space on this app that truly loathe having to deal with this - you're talking about your chronic pain, hoping to see more people like you and instead of fellow chronic pain havers your tags are full of writers using you as some sort of “how to hurt my oc” reference.

Whether you make a mental note of something that you read is a different thing that no one can logistically stop you from doing. But don't go around telling random disabled people that you're using their experience for your blorbos-in-pain fanfic.

The real way to get writing advice about disability is to pay a disabled person to be a sensitivity reader. Don't use random people who didn't sign up for this as a free alternative.

A lot of yall need to learn the difference between characters and actors

Why Belushi's presentation makes me skeptical about Saturday Night

a short essay, if you will. ive seen other people's opinions posted around 70s Comedian Tumblr, and I'm wondering on y'alls takes on this.

I feel like there are a few things that rub me the wrong way about Saturday Night, the movie about SNL's first episode, coming out next month. Most of the issues I have with it are smaller; Little issues I can look at and say "Huh. That's a little lame, but that won't make or break it."

But in the trailers, there's one thing that stood out to me as the issue that really made me worry about what this movie was going to be. It's the way they've presented John Belushi. The movie seems to present him as two things:

The Bee Guy

The Guy With Issues

These two little details are the things that really rub me the wrong way, because they seem to be not very faithful to who Belushi was as a person. So I wanna argue my points really quick, and see what the fellow comedy/SNL/John B fans think.

The Bee Guy

This is the part that I feel is a little more straightforward to explain. Probably a solid half, maybe more, of the clips we see of Belushi have him in his bee costume. Which isn't inherently a problem, but its important to note that John infamously hated doing the bee skits, and he was frustrated about being known as the Bee Guy.

To be fair, I think we will see much more of John not in the costume in the actual film itself. But it feels a little disrespectful to present him as "Hey! You remember those bee sketches from classic SNL? Look, this is the guy who did the bee bits!" in the advertising. especially considering- many members of my generation dont know John- or at least, dont know him very well. so a lot of people might see the ads, or see the movie, and walk away thinking of John as the Bee Guy.

And honestly, I know the bee thing probably isn't much of a big deal, but feels just a little inconsiderate imo.

The Guy With Issues

This is the bigger thing, the thing that really worries me about this movie. It stood out to me in the trailers that, in so many scenes and press photos...

...they almost seem to be going for this aggressive, grumpy, moody asshole.

That's what worries me. The idea that this movie might be Wired all over again. I'm worried that this movie will present John as this cracked out, violent, fucked up guy.

And of course, John was not perfect. The man had his demons. But I'm talking about this in the context of Reitman's creative direction. He told these actors not to study the people they were playing, or talk to them. So if Wood didn't decide to do research anyway like Smith did, would be going only off of what he knows, or what he's heard about John.

And I'm just saying. Before I got into this fandom, all I knew about John was that he was some crack addict who (and I no longer believe in this following rumor) cheated on his wife. What I knew about John was what gossip sites parroted from Wired. So who knows what Wood has heard about John.

So I'm worried that this movie will follow in Wired's footsteps. That it'll choose the sensation of a selfish, angry crack addict over a faithful representation of the person John actually was.

----- But Who Knows?

Maybe the movie will surprise us. While I do have VERY strong doubts about the writing and creative choices for this movie, there are some talented people working on this film. And of course, an advertisement isn't always a truly accurate representation of the final product. Maybe the film will prove to be a decent take on John when its not just the scenes picked for a quick ad. Maybe Wood did his research anyway and just hasn't mentioned it. I hope we get something better than what the trailer showed us.

People are allowed to do whatever they want. Just because there's a boundary or wall don't mean it will keep people out. Sometimes people go over walls, burn down and break walls.

When that happens it is up to the individual to take steps and actions to address those breaches and to prevent them from happening again.

Tae "disrespecting" someone's boundaries is not what's important. It's that person enforcing those boundaries or allowing it that matters.

After all JK is not a child any more and so he shouldn't and wouldn't allow things he's not comfortable with. And in that regard, what may be a hard limit to you may not be a hard limit to him so he might allow it.

It's the same with JM and every body.

I think from Tae saying he wouldn't be willing to do red line tattoos with his members, it's safe to say he does understand some sort of limits or boundaries when it comes to relationships.

His limits may not however be the same as every body's.

For instance while he said he wouldn't do the red line tattoo at all JK didn't mind. He was willing to do it save for a few modifications.

It doesn't mean JK has no sense of boundaries because he is the same individual who said he wouldn't be okay with his SO feeding his friends perilla leaves or whatever.

Those two have different sense of boundaries.

Tae tend to be very liberal, carefree and has a lower social threshold. When he was younger the members used to say he had zero sense of boundaries and we could all see that too most times.

A reminder, he's the same person he stripped young Jk naked in the shower so he could have that male bonding experience and stop his shyness.

Yet he is also the one who wouldn't share his close friends with his band mates and said he likes girls that looked mean (unapproachable) on the outside.

So we know he has some sense of boundaries too. It's just not what you'd expect.

What is a boundary to you might not feel like a boundary to him. I recall him posting TKK photos on his birthday when Jk had gone out of his way to edit himself out of those pics.

The environment a person is raised in has an impact on their understanding of social dynamics and so we all have unique social needs and boundaries.

Tonight, I have a few thoughts and feelings. This unfortunately means I have to make an extremely long post. But anyways

Idk about others, but Furina losing her status as the Hydro Archon in those theories isn't what bugs me. If yall wanna have some food for thought, then that's perfectly fine. There are even a few that have some interesting thoughts, and yk if a girlfailure wants to chill for a bit, then good for her.

What I am pissed off about though is how most people want this to happen because...they don't like her?

I'd like to establish that there are two things to determine about how good or bad a character is: if they're good morally/have a good attitude, or if they're written in a good way. These are two separate things. I want to emphasize that.

Whether or not a character has good morals or a good attitude is up to the person, but I think regardless of whether someone thinks the character is good or bad morally or attitude wise, if the character hits the criteria of being well written by creative writing standards, then that needs to be acknowledged. Basically:

Good moral/attitude =/= good writing

So, we get back to Furina. Literally just a few minutes into her introduction, and most people already have very strong impressions or opinions about her: she's a brat, she's childish, she's insecure, and in some situations she is a coward. As we learn more of her, we learn that: she is willing to give herself for her people (her people pleasing tendencies + her extensive research of the prophecy over centuries) and that she isn't too annoying or heartless if someone like Neuvillette is willing to stay under her care for 500 years.

Whether or not you think she has a good attitude or good morals is up to you, and I'd respect that. I deeply respect people (like bwaap) who may have some less than the best opinions of her, and yet can fully acknowledge that she's a well written character.

But first, why do I think she's a well written and well performed character? Well, let's take a look at a list of notes of basically how to write a good character according to a post by Brighton Rose and lectures from Brandon Sanderson. I'll try to keep these as short and concise as possible. These notes are:

They have motivation, long-term or short term

They have flaws and setbacks

They have little quirks

They have progress throughout the story

And that all of these are shown properly, not told.

Furina checks out most if not all of these notes. She has a long term goal (to stop or protect people from the prophecy), and a kinda short term one (to gain the attention and affection of her people and recently, the Traveler). Obviously, she has her flaws and setbacks--I'm sure you'd know. Same for quirks. But for progress...while I can't say much since not all the Archon quests are out, I will note that Furina took the second trial more seriously after seeing that she nearly made the grave mistake of falsely accusing one of her people. Whether or not that's due to her embarrassment or because she actually cares about only putting the right people behind bars, that's up to you. Regardless, it is still progress.

If you don't like Furina's attitude or morals, then that's fine. I'm not that blind. But then, there are people that--just because she's too bratty or that her flaws are a little too apparent--immediately claim that she's the embodiment of bad writing. Honey, she doesn't need a personality workshop, she just needs to grow.

Also, I don't dislike Neuvillette but I do dislike the role some of his fans push on him. No, I don't mean the Archon role. I mean as someone Furina should be. I mean as someone they want Furina to be. It's extremely disrespectful for both of their characters--with all of my arguments basically boiling down to "they're different people".

TL;DR: What pisses me off is how people want to transplant Neuvillette's personality onto Furina, or to hold him up as some sort of standard of what she should've been, not all the "She's going to lose her Archon status" theories. I'm not asking people to like her attitude or morals, I'm begging people to stop thinking of her as someone who needs fixing.

She doesn't need a fix. She needs growth. Yknow, if you'd actually let her grow and not just turn a blind eye away from it.

Rafael caro quintero liking men? Oh the poor man is confused, like these are the 80's and he's in the most fucking dangerous business to just wake up one day and realize "oh sh*t I like men"

He meets you through the cartel of course, working with you always leaves him feeling something...strange, he thought he just liked who you were, after all you were funny, nice company and you could get the job well done

He thought that was it for a long time, I mean you were a great business partner and a great friend too, you would always listen to him when he had any sort of problem, and would stop him from GETTING into a problem more times than he could have counted. You were always up to drink but always stopped him whether he liked it or not so he could still be coherent enough to not be absolutely wasted, and on the rare occasion he was? You always made sure he got home safe, either sending him home or taking him yourself

When he needed a place to stay your doors were always open and when he fucked up really bad, like the type of bad you don't come back from? Somehow you always found it in yourself to let him back in

You were a best friend to him, someone he could truly rely on no matter what, so why did he still feel so sad everytime you had to leave? Or angry when you wouldn't contact him for days, and absolutely enraged when he saw girls trying to hit on you at social events?

The point of no return happened in a very drastic way and unexpected too, like I can see him just finding out about a new girl who your "messing" around with and just absolutely exploding with rage and betrayal

Let's say your over at his house, you guys are alone a couple of beers in the table and the music playing in the background when you start talking about this really pretty girl your seeing lately, nothing to serious but it's the way you talk about her and how pretty her smile is and how perfect she looks he can just feel the anger bubbling up inside him because when he sees the smile in your face he just can't stand it.

you should be talking about him that way telling HIM how handsome he is, how much you love him, and he can't stand it anymore he feels like if he sits for just one more minute he's gonna die

hi i have an idea and if yall wanna hear pls do.

so, me and my friend were talking and talked abt what could've made the heros of olympus series better. mind you, we r now high schoolers, we first read the series in middle school, like 6th grade. also, they are aro/ace (ish, still questioning) and i like to write + i love valgrace.

(BTW IM DOING THE KEEP READING THING BC ITS LONG AND ID FEEL BAD IF U HAD TO READ ALL THAT WITHOUT IT)

so one of the things we decided would've made it more interesting was if piper and jason never ended up together, like at all. ik im a hardcore valgrace shipper, but my friend isn't and we agreed mutually that this didn't make much sense. their whole relationship was built on false memories and one quest, piper pining over him the whole time. we think that also would've enhanced pipers destiny as an aphrodite kid. an aphrodite kid who never dated in the most "important" part of her life, the main part we follow. an aphrodite kid who couldn't get the boy she'd loved. if she'd never dated, it could've really brought out more of the "aphrodite" part of her identity. i'm bad at explaining, but trust. it makes sense in my head. plus, it could show how she's this aphrodite kid who actually is a lesbian yall. which could've been a rlly interesting aspect, maybe some comphet.

one more thing is that whenever jason talks about piper, as his girlfriend, he comments on her physical aspects. as her platonic friend, he comments on her mind. idk if that makes sense, but when reading it, it felt more like how he'd compliment leo, or frank, or someone who was "just a friend".

plus, it feels weird that all of their friends are dating, maybe it could've caused peer pressure? like how leo felt, always being "7th wheel" (idk i came up with that on the spot)

the next thing was if leo and calypso never fell in love. as said before, im a valgrace shipper and they aren't, but we both thought this was an awkward and toxic relationship. the reason why, i'll get into later, but first i wanna talk about why it could've been better in the series.

we think that it could've been more impactful for calypso's side of the story. yes, i know calypso wasn't a great person in mythology, but we have to think of this from both characters perspectives. this is how my friend put it:

it could've been more impactful for calypso since it would've had an ending that was going against the god's curse of her falling in love with everyone on the island, but they couldn't leave. it would've been more interesting of the one person who did save her, was someone she wasn't in love with. the one person she didn't fall for was the person who actually came back for her.

that would've really made things more interesting for her story.

for leo's side, a (not important, but very hugely stated) part of his character is falling for people as a coping mechanism. idk the quote, but sometime in TLH, he talks about how he falls for people who are impossibly out of his league. ok, maybe this doesn't count as a coping mechanism, but it seems to be. sort of like attachment issues, always on the run since the people who did care about him died/left.

i think that it seems wrong (for rick to write, they could never make me hate you leo... with exceptions) for leo to fall for a girl who was "destined" to fall for him anyways. my poor boy. he'd gone through so much yall :(

and to the point of how caleo is sort of toxic, i haven't read much of toa, but i do find that they both cross boundaries.

for example, calling each other names they don't like. i find it VERY disrespectful for leo to call calypso "mamacita". i don't like her, but all girls deserve respect. she also states how she's told him not to call her that, and by the way he reacts, he knows.

similarly to calypso calling leo "leonidas". i don't have much information on this, but i'll link a tumblr post i read on this.

one thing, i think i don't like calypso much, but i will not hate her till 1. i've done more research and 2. have more evidence why. i feel it unfair, and i know many people don't like her. i'm also incredibly biased towards leo, so yeah. but, i will give her the chance till i have more information on the subject.

on that note, i don't like caleo. i quite hate it. but for good reason, from what i've talked about. it was just too forced and toxic, and not good overall. maybe it could've been if it was written different, but i hope u understand where i am coming from. ALSO! I AM NOT A HATER BC I LIKE VALGRACE, IF YOU READ ANY OF THIS YOU'D KNOW THAT. im just saying, caleo could've just stayed platonic. just read it all of this + maybe the other blogs before commenting.

okay i’m just going to get this off of my chest because i haven’t even been on tumblr long but i’ve seen this argument so many times it’s ridiculous😭 i hate to see black writers get shitted on for writing what makes them happy. not only do they put time and effort into their writing but they also share their works for free! just in hopes that other people like them will enjoy and consume their work. that’s just the simple truth. if you don’t like the way someone writes reader in their works, then don’t read it. nobody cares that you don’t like something. it also really bothers me that people claim that they hate that black reader is always depicted as hypersexual and ghetto and toxic. which… BITCH HUH??? the black writers that i follow are definitely versatile in their writing and don’t only write smut, don’t only give reader one specific personality. because most black writers goal is to make sure everyone feels included in their works. might i add, being hypersexual is not a bad thing. that one post that started this conversation again, so many comments were people saying “why can’t reader be normal?” ummm…. babes… being ghetto and hypersexual IS normal. very normal people are like that, it’s apart of their personality. i guess the hate towards hypersexuality stuff really bothers me because i am hypersexual (from sa trauma as a child) and i feel like those types of comments feel like indirect slut shaming. but being hypersexual does not equal sleeping around. i’m a perfect example i am hypersexual but am a virgin yall😭 it’s just strange and i think a lot of this comes from being ashamed of their blackness and sexuality. especially because as black women we are often shamed for these things. but i understand not ALL black women but a lot are like the reader in these fics. thank you to all the people who were respectful. when i was still active in our little community + the scenekid DR community as a whole, it was really cool. i was super into scene fashion at the time and it was fun meeting other scenekids who liked danganronpa, and had similar HCs to mine. it was really awesome whenever i posted a new edit and someone said “hey! ive been waiting for you to do this character :)” and actually made me tear up a few times. realistically its not that big of a deal, it was just cool seeing so many people genuinely appreciate my artwork, even if it was just badly done scenekid edits of danganronpa characters. i really loved seeing people make content /inspired/ by my edits and even say they wanted to cosplay them. while i dont have those feelings anymore, it was fun while it lasted. sorry if this seems really sappy and overly serious, im not sure how to write things casually, HaHa.
