"I didn't think you and Gilbert Blythe were such good friends that you'd stand for half an hour at the gate talking to him," said Marilla with a dry smile. "We haven't been—we've been good enemies. But we have decided that it will be much more sensible to be good friends in the future. Were we really there half an hour? It seemed just a few minutes. But, you see, we have five years' lost conversations to catch up with, Marilla."

it's not even like i want RPGs to offer a billion different choices, most of the games i like are pretty linear and set up a very clear past for the main character. like the exile in kotor 2, the watcher's past in pillars, the dark urge in bg3, the warden has many origins but they all restrict your ability to write your character's past somewhat. and that's fine because they're very cool pasts and also all these games give you a lot of room to react to events and express thoughts about them naturally, and that's how my warden amell can be so different from someone else's, even though we start out at the same point
all of that is really what made me feel disengaged from datv the most. sure, they leave your character's past pretty vague so you can write whatever you want, but i can already do that in my head for free. and if i could at least develop my character in interactions with the world, that would be nice, but the dialogue wheel when talking to companions is pretty much always three different ways of saying the same thing, so no. if i could just choose from at least three actual different options like in da2, it would already be way better
#another thing bg3 did so well! i never felt like i was making unnatural choices in that one#like i love emelin sooooo much but i could never just credit myself for her... the dark urge offers such nice building blocks for the playe#to create with#it really feels like a character written in conversation with the game#jena feels like a character written against the game... despite my best efforts

This emerged in the middle of writing up thoughts on Ciri and Avallac'h based on the books alone.
---
The Witcher’s theme of choice and destiny is complicated by psychological barriers – one must be emotionally ready to accept the way the dice can fall.
Interestingly, Avallac’h’s rejection mirrors how Lara rejected the plans for her destiny. His rejection of Ciri's offer ironically puts him in the position of resisting destiny – the very 'crime' he condemned Lara for committing.
Elves had plans for Lara – to stay and have special children. She rejected this. Elven goals were upended.
For Ciri, Avallac’h has orchestrated a destiny, but when Ciri gets sick of the official programme not working out and offers herself to him directly – effectively suggesting getting the goal they want faster – she gets rebuked. She’s creating an unexpected path to achieving the elves’ goals; one where she shows agency in choosing the father.
In poetic justice, Avallac’h is mirroring Lara’s rejection of the elves’ plans: the man who spent centuries judging Lara for prioritizing personal choice over racial destiny ends up making essentially the same choice, but from the opposite side of the equation. In rejecting Ciri's offer at that point, he implicitly asserts that the manner in which destiny unfolds matters, not just the outcome.
Avallac’h, however, seems blind to this parallel between himself and Lara.
This suggests though, that perhaps Avallac'h's centuries of resentment toward Lara concealed a deeper, unacknowledged understanding of her choice – one that surfaces in his own moment of revelation. You cannot force it if you are not ready for it, but avoiding it will bring consequences. The sword of destiny is double-edged.
Sapkowski often structures his narrative so as to force characters to confront their own contradictions, often without them fully recognizing the pattern they’re repeating or inverting.
#the witcher#the witcher books#lady of the lake#andrzej sapkowski#ciri#avallac'h#lara dorren#the witcher meta#Lara's rejection of the predetermined path didn't just thwart the elves' plans; it implicitly challenged the entire framework of certainty#upon which Avallac'h had built his worldview#it was like a sage curve ball thrown at another sage - since they all manipulate fate - regarding how flexible you have to be with powers#like these#It suggests that what he can't forgive Lara for isn't just her choice itself#but how that choice revealed the cracks in his own certainty#It revealed his own vulnerability#When Ciri offers herself to him this vulnerability is demonstrated again bc if he were truly certain about EB project being purely#about genetics and destiny then he could accept her offer as a practical solution (even a backup for the time being)#i.e. boy is confronted with his own conflicted and complex being that differs not all that much from the mess of humanity

The thing that really gets me about Wyll and Karlach is just how their bond is allowed to have the importance in their narratives that it has
I mean, in games like these the cast is always going to be centered around the pc. Sure, the relationships between other companions can be developed through party banter, commentary, or even cinematics, but at the end of the day everyone's most significant relationship is always going to be the player. That's the person who most affects them and where their story is going
With these two, it's not even that Tav isn't vitally important to them both, but it's meeting Karlach that changes Wyll's life one way or another. It's Wyll that's the first person to stick out his neck for Karlach, and sends her reeling. Their bond alone is enough to convince Karlach to go to Avernus and stay alive
It's a very bold choice to risk limiting the player's importance in order to drive home the connection between two characters, and I really appreciate Larian for going there
#and that bond is significant whether you see it as platonic or romantic#but this is very much why I do find myself shipping it despite not really caring about originxorigin ships as a whole#wyll ravengard#karlach cliffgate#wyllach#bg3#gonna get a lil gushy about my own pt here but#it's fully Wyll who saved Karlach's life there#my Tav's character arc in large part about accepting death#she went from being unable to cope with the loss of her family to processing it and accepting it#she convinced Mayrina to let go of her husband#she didn't argue when Shadowheart let go of her parents and was even relieved at her choice#she was not going to stop Karlach from nlowing up in the end#she and I both accepted that Karlach was going to die#and then at the last moment Wyll comes in and he doesn't accept it#he offers to go to Avernus with her and protect her#and I just realized this wasn't about my Tav#this was about them#*chefs kiss*

Do you ever just lay awake at night, turning over in your head the stark difference in delivery between Hewson's Van saying--steadily, unshakably--"it's just something that's happening to you...happening to us" and Cypress' Taissa saying--imploringly, whiningly--"this was not just my dream, this was our dream"?
Do you ever just turn it over and over, how often Tai tried to scare Van away, and how it only made Van set her feet more firmly? How Taissa's first love was this person who saw a problem fall into Taissa's lap, a problem that was quite literally trapped inside Taissa's body, and decided unflinchingly: No, that's an us problem now? How she refused point-blank to walk away even with blood in her mouth, how she flatly informed Tai "I'm never gonna be scared of you", and promptly turned a moment of pain into a declaration of love? And how this would etch itself into Taissa for the rest of her life? How she'd take these things that worked with Van--with the person Van was, with the bond they shared--and try so hard to run through an identical script with Simone?
Except Simone is her own person. A completely different kind of person. A person who hasn't been offered any of the context, any of the realities going on inside Taissa. So: naturally she doesn't respond the way Van did at eighteen--and will go on to do all over again in her forties. Naturally, she hears our dream as the excuse it is, not as a plea for connection. Naturally, she is scared away when Taissa pushes, and shouts, and begs. Because there isn't blood in her mouth, not yet, but there will be. And they have a son to worry about. And she isn't eighteen and a special kind of immortal, a special kind of romanticized. She's a grown woman with responsibilities, with priorities, with an understanding that you can't fix someone just because you love them. And Tai can't just perform a revival of the play she and Van had memorized twenty-five years later with a whole new performer in the works, and expect it to shake out the same.
Of course it doesn't work. But look at Taissa trying it. Look at Taissa trying to reframe her first love through a new lens. Trying to recast it. Trying to play it through again. Van taught her love was sticking out the blood, shaking off the pain, making a you problem into an us problem. Does it ever just eat at you, how tragic it is, watching Taissa try to shape her marriage around a woman who isn't even wearing a ring?
#yellowjackets#yj meta#taivan#sorry i'm just fucking obsessed with cypress' delivery choice in that scene#it is the most immature we EVER hear tai sound#and it's not teenage taissa. it's adult wife-mother-almost senator tai flat out whining in desperation#it is SUCH a choice#and then after the S2 opener to hear van sound so adult offering a glimpse as to WHY tai would#so pleadingly seek turning a Tai Thing into an Us Thing#yeah. yeah of course she would. because van shared the worst of her#van shared it without allowing tai to dissaude her. van quite literally tethered herself to tai's problems#and tai learned: that is what love is#and tai thought: this is what love is#it's sharing. and giving up on sharing is surrendering the whole thing#and she's lying! is the thing! she's lying to simone and to herself#she's making excuses for doing what she wants to do even though she shouldn't be doing it#but the core of it is Team. the core of it is Us. the core of it is#'if you love me you will be on my side. for better or worse.'#because that's what van did. for better. and for so much worse.#which isn't true. isn't actually how love works. love is sometimes putting your foot down and saying 'nah dude that ain't it.'#love is communication. but that was never taivan's game and it isn't tai's now and so she's just trying old plays#and it is NOT a play that can ever work the same with simone in the leading role. nor should it.#but god everything about them makes me so sad because simone deserves better and taissa needs what she won't admit to#anyway. will be absolutely gnawing at the walls until S3.

something thats always been on my mind about the eah destiny system is that a lot of the time i dont think the book actually needs to play a factor ... especially w regards to briar — sure she can opt out, can say No Thank you to the curse but i dont see how that stops anything ? the original sleeping beauty didnt consent to be cursed to sleep , we know the stories change and just have to keep the essense of the fairytale ? so whats actually stopping faybelle cursing her anyway . . . just trust ? hope ??
#💬#ever after high#bribelle#so what im really saying here is lovers to enemies toxic doomed yuri bribelle where faybelle curses her and waits out the 100 years by (..)#her side even knowing she will never be able to offer an apology thats enough .#faybelle respecting briars choice not to follow her destiny would also be neat but ..... i have to assume faybelle is going to be under#a LOT of pressure to follow through w it anyway ....#side topic its odd to me personally that faybelle was never considered as a raven replacement <— unless she was and i forgot#evil queen dark fairy .... very similar ..... it seems like that could fit the same niche as the huntsman or the charmings#but i suppose snow white is a MAJOR story in the eahverse#i dont knowwwwwwwwww ... !

It’s not nature or nurture it’s what you make of what you’re given that is what defines good and evil!!
#it’s choice!! free will! resoonsibility#responsibility#!!!!#that’s why it’s actually important these are YA books#the coming of age is the accepting of responsibility#but the tragedy is. no one here does! or at least#we know Snow doesn’t. the dean doesn’t. the capitol doesnt. I’d even argue Lucy doesn’t!#but in the framework of the book you get to the point where you ask well how can they??#how do you live forever stained by the bad things you’ve done???#and here’s the thing. if you’re looking. Snow has chances out.#he CAN take responsibility for Sejanus. Lucy says him and her are each others responsibility now and he abdicates it#he could have taken it!!#and every even falsely outwardly good step he takes in self interest#even those offer him what are. if you look! chances at grace!!#ma and her cookies!! Tigris! Lucy!! second chance after second chance#but self interest doesn’t allow you to see the grace#because it’s about what you WANT and that becomes a matter of control#you want everything to be how you want it#and in that state you reject gift after gift because you didn’t mail order it!!#so it creates a world where grace seems absent#and then it becomes a self feeding cycle#how can you take responsibility if it just means self annihilation if there’s no grace!!#and thg is maybe the answer to that#it’s the possibility of redemption that you need#need to think about that more#magpie reads tbosas

I'm going to scream at some arcane season 2 takes I've seen on TikTok the purity mindset is a curse
Like NO ONE is a morally perfect/good person in this show!!!!! They've all made awful decisions that have hurt people!!!!! That's the point!!! And it's okay and so very normal to like a character even if they've done some really bad shit. The amount of "man they want me to like THAT person after what they did?" Type takes are making me want to pull my hair out like YES! BECAUSE THEY ARE INTERESTING AND NUANCED CHARACTERS YOU CAN BOTH ENJOY WATCHING THEM AND ALSO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING IS FUCKED!!!!!! WHY IS THIS SO HARD
#the shit around Caitlin rn is infuriating#like girl is going THROUGH it and it's been fascinating to watch#like watch her chose anger over anything else#chosing to fester in it when she has been offered peace or understanding or love#like it's JUICY i love that choice#and to go on and see people's takes being ''if you're trying to justify anything thats shes done you're wrong and also bad'' like.... sigh#yeah flooding the under city with POISON GAS is wrong but i also can like.... just enjoy her b/c shes not real?#she is fictional? this making everything happening a hypothetical?#i dunno its frustrating#arcane#arcane spoilers#arcane season 2

what’s wrong with aoc? Could you explain it to me please?
i dont fw just about everyone in power and politics in the west esp since the past 2 years have exposed and displayed everyones true colours, some vibrant others more subtle, which imo therein lies the real horror; they all parade in different shades of the same deeply disturbed and bigoted mindset. a few links:
outwardly she may seem better than most of her peers in congress (a low bar indeed) but the dems in general have shown themselves no less disgusting and hypocritical than their opposition, the stark difference lies in how they present and advertise themselves.
no real or tangible effort has been made by literally anyone at any point for a ceasefire of any degree, harris and biden greenlit and continued to staunchly sponsor and justify the ongoing genocide and its accompanying war crimes. they can hide behind claims of diversity and acceptance all they want theyre just as guilty in regards to deportations, all of this and more is made even more heinous by the hypocrisy on full display.
to me nothing is more insulting nor an instant depletor of any respect i may hold for anyone than dishonesty. politics is dirty work and rarely does anyone get anywhere by being a saint, of that much im aware but all i ask is consistency. do not smile at me or preach of your virtue as you twist the knife. fuck that
ur ask i assume comes after the post i reblogged this morning, i dont believe in anyone (in political power esp) should be idolised or placed on a pedestal, were all humans and flawed, but its so happens that some peoples fuck ups lie on a much bigger and devastating scale that often translates into bombing civilians half the globe away and no one cares because folks accept that we dont matter.
and in that regard there are significantly better figures to be looking up to who arent morally bankrupt or worse; morally bankrupt and cosplaying as anything but. thems my two cents on the matter ig.
#all this to say i think she represents her party well in more ways than one. she may have done good i dont take that away from her#but truth be told those the most capable of net good are often the perpetrators and propagators of the worst humanity has to offer#its late but this is the best i can do for now#everything infuriates me#theres another link or two but i decided to not be petty lol#it gets harder to think of dems as a lesser evil when theyre just as bad but covered in sparkles & rainbows. the illusion of choice meme#also this post is palestine centric bc its an indicator (primary at least) to who has a backbone and conscience and who doesnt#aoc#fuck israel#inbox shenanigans

noel's route is done... two down, two to go
#sorry for making you all wait 500 years. i have problems#i have lea's and clem's left. lea's i think will be the easiest (it's the one changing the least) but clem's will be the hardest lol#they have the most variation due to the earlier conversation where they try to offer you their deal#every1 else is quite linear. these branches exist to establish worldbuilding and give u insight into whichever character you choose#plus building mc's personality stats with lots of dialogue choices (and romance. if u so choose)#it's just that clem's relationship branches earlier than the others. lea's happens in their branch/before duncan's intro#(and then branches even more later)#whereas noel's doesn't really branch until the end of ch3 after the fight in blackwater#merry's will branch at the end of this chapter (with smaller branches happening earlier if u go with her during the day)#all of them will change at the end of ch3 too depending on how the fight goes. yayyy i love interactive narratives#*says through gritted teeth with tears in my eyes*

I will never make this because it would be for an audience of one (me) but ever since reading "If we Were Villains" (story about serious drama kids in college who perform shakespeare and deal with a murder) I have been entertaining the thought of a crack fic crossover with High School Musical The Musical The Series where the staff decides they will no longer put on shakespeare after the tragic accident that happened at Thanksgiving, because Shakespeare plays would only increase the tension and drama. So they hire Ms. Jen who decides their spring play will actually be High School Musical (which exists in the 90s in this universe) and it ruins the vibe so much that everyone gives up on being dark and mysterious because they're universally pissed at Ms Jen for making them learn choreoraphed basketball dancing.
#if we were villains is actually genuinely good and has actual literary worth and pulls from shakespeare in an intelligent meaningful way#but unfortunately all i can do is comedy so this is the only fan content i have to offer :(#THE THING IS iwwv is just hsmtmts if it hsmtmts was good and also they committed crimes#they utilize the same parallel of casting choices with real life drama which I love#umm so casting: Meredith would be Sharpay Obvi. I think it would be really funny if James was cast as Ryan bc they hate eachother and would#have to pretend to be siblings working together. And I think ashley tisdale and Lucas Gabreel actually didn't get along when filming#also i love the thought of Ms Jen looking at James and going “i know what you are”#HOWEVER it would be more interesting if james was Chad to Oliver's Troy (which is really just reversing their Romeo and Juliet moment)#bc chad is like nooo don't do theater... stick with me and do basketball... but it would be Coded Subtextually#Unfortunately Wren would be typecast as Gabriella and I don't think that would cause drama bc I don't believe James actually liked her!#I think it was comp het bc she was very sweet and nonthreatening as opposed to Meredith's big flirting energy so she would be a “safe” crus#lets lean into that actually. this gives Wren a chance to have a personality (bc I enjoy this book but it is not good at fleshing out women#So oliver and Wren spend more time together and kind of talk about James a little and Wren is like yeah James is very sweet#and I like him but it feels so hard to get him to feel comfortable with me... i guess he's just closed off and doesn't talk much#we also get to see more of her personality and interests maybe she's like I relate to gabriella because I also like to Read :) feminism#and oliver is like Hmm That Is Not My Experience With Him perhaps our bond is deeper and James does like me Hm#And then Meredith can flirt with him as Sharpay and James gets pissed and in character gets very intense about how Troy can't join THEATER#that's why he's upset and sad bc sharpay represents theater and only that reason and nothing else and he isn't in love with oliver At All#Alexander can be Ryan now since James is Chad (and he's also Gay) and Filippa can be Kenzie bc they're both queer coded#Anyway at rehearsal one day Meredith and James and Oliver are having their fighting over troy moment and then Meredith stops and is like#wait guys. This musical is so freaking stupid. why are we even doing this#and their mutual frustration at their art being turned into a farce is enough to bond them together and they're like#we need to focus on our REAL enemy: ms Jen#and then they hatch a scheme and it's probably like. They dump a bucket of fake blood on her at opening night a la carrie#and then put on their own rebellious production... it still has to be a musical because i like musicals#families with children are in the audience and they're like OK FOLKS! HERE'S ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!#if we were villains#iwwv#hsmtmts#high school musical the musical the series
