“Anne of Green Gables” The Novel For Gets New TV Anime in Spring 2025

Broadcaster NHK revealed a new television anime based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables book. The Answer Studio (Kami no Tou: Ouji no Kikan, Golgo 13 (TV)) produces the anime, Anne Shirley, which will debut on NHK-E in April 2025.

Women were bad enough in all conscience, but little girls were worse. He detested the way they had of sidling past him timidly, with sidewise glances, as if they expected him to gobble them up at a mouthful if they ventured to say a word. That was the Avonlea type of well-bred little girl. But this freckled witch was very different, and although he found it rather difficult for his slower intelligence to keep up with her brisk mental processes he thought that he “kind of liked her chatter.”

The directing for the new Anne of Green Gables anime seem much bouncier and anime-y than the 1979 show (which looked fantastic but was barely animated at times).

Not sure how I feel about it just yet…

Anne seems to alternate between looking, well, like Anne, and looking more like a Makoto Shinkai protagonist, as is the case with most of the teenage cast (character designer Kenichi ‌Tsuchiya is one of Shinkai’s frequent collaborators after all)… Which is to say that they’re too pretty at times, especially Anne. In that sense, I much prefer the ’79 designs by Yoshifumi Kondō…

But the background art for this new adaptation is lovely, I like the paper texture it all has, and when it comes to motion, bouncy, anime-y is an interesting interpretation of the way Anne acts in general, so I’m very curious about what new spin on Green Gables this show will bring!

What a surprise! Another new "Anne of Green Gables" anime is currently in the works. The new adaptation will be titled "Anne Shirley" and it is said that it's story will be based on first three "Anne" novels - "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea" and "Anne of the Island". The anime will be scheduled to be released on April 2025.

As for someone who had watched a lot of classic literature based anime for a long time, I think that news is some sort of slap in the face to Nippon Animation, an anime studio known for making a lot of anime based on novels particulary the "World Masterpiece Theater" series. Considering Nippon Animation is planning to have 50th anniversary of that studio next year, seeing a certain animation studio having interest of doing an anime adaptation of the novel is a sign that the former should never rely on their nostalgia and try to step up aside from selling merchandise. It also means there are people in animation studio in Japan who believe there's still a market to these kind of anime. Here's hoping that the new "Anne of Green Gables" anime will receive well.

From top to bottom: "Green Gables", "The Birch Path", "A sunset view of Avonlea", and last but not least, "The White Way of Delight".
