Spring 2025 is apparently the season of brunette girls casually proposing to girls they haven't even gone on a date with. I'm not complaining.

I'm actually watching more than 1 anime as it comes out seasonally for the first time in ages (instead of waiting for a bunch of episodes fo binge them) so... here's everything I'm watching and some thoughts!
To Be Hero X: Watch it. I cannot express enough how much I don't wanna spoil this. It's writing is fun, the opening is a banger, the voice acting is phenomenal, and it always has something coming out of left field. 10/10

Kowloon Generic Romance: Feels like a callback to the 80s and also a warning toward nostalgia in general. Made me pick up the manga instantly. Has some not so great dated tropes, but ultimately very fun. The opening is also a banger. 8/10

Anne Shirley: I think this is doing just enough differently from the original Anne of Green Gables anime adaptation to stand alone. It is very awkward to read the subtitles, however, since they're trying to mimic the book and that makes the dialog feel off when trying to read it so quickly. It's also gorgeous. 8/10

mono: There's no way I wasn't gonna like this. It's from the Laid Back Camp creator, but instead of camping it's photography. Episode 1 already endeared me to everyone and it's just relaxing (and makes me wanna take photos). 9/10

Food For The Soul: I have never felt more called out by a main character. That was me in college before I got more confident. It's your basic cute girls doing things anime, but this time in college so I hope there's more for me to relate to. If not, it's a perfectly enjoyable food anime. 7/10

ZatsuTabi -That's Journey!-: It's kinda like Laid Back Camp but without the camping. Episode 1 was fun, but not "Oh my gosh I loved it". I think this one may just be a nice simple show to enjoy at the end of the day. 7/10

Returning show- Apothecary Diaries Season 2: It's Apothecary Diaries. It's peak. 10/10.

Anime I'm Watching Spring 2025
listed from least likely to drop -> most likely to drop. I'm being pretty picky this season so I've already dropped a lot of shows that I'm not mentioning
Shin Samurai-den Yaiba: this show is just immediately bewitching. looks gorgeous, fights are really dynamic and engaging, & has made me laugh a few times. im not nostalgic for the old-school style it's honoring, but that doesn't matter in the slightest. really high hopes for this one
Mono: the first episode charmed me SO MUCH. the characters are all really fun to watch and their dynamics are instantly compelling. really funny jokes. and everything about this show is so cute it makes me want to bite my own head off
Shoushimin Series S2: more shoushimin series :) i just really love the way this show is directed. excited to see what osanai will set fire to next
Apocalypse Hotel: story has intrigued me so far. i really loved that intro sequence in the first episode, and the characters seem like they fit well together. looking forward to seeing where the story goes next
Rock is a Lady's Modesty: the premise is just so fun. and i really appreciated the attention to detail in regards to the instrumental performances. still needs a little ways to go before im fully invested in these characters, but im definitely along for the ride so far
Wind Breaker S2: i watched all of season 1 and it was!... alright...!! the main thing i enjoyed about it was the dynamic fight animation and sound direction, and those things remain really high quality with this season. i still dont really care all that much about the characters but i have found myself slightly more engrossed in the fights in the 2 new episodes ive watched, so maybe im warming up to them? idk. on my knees begging and pleading for more content about that girl with red hair. i cheer every time i see her in the OP
Lazarus: i can't seem to reliably find the subbed version for this? im assuming adult swim shenanigans. i was like 'whatever' and watched the first episode eng dubbed all the way through, but then in the end credits i saw that the lead JP VA was Mamoru Miyano and i got pissed. potentially interesting story but if finding the sub is annoying enough i'm kicking it to the curb

Rock is a Lady's Modesty
Good early addition to the watch list. We got drill curls, bird-in-cage metaphors, hints of yuri - probably bait, and angry music making.

The Dinner Table Detective Episode 1 Review - Rich Detectives That Share A Brain Cell
Some types of anime I love are mysteries where I am allowed to think and comedic shows where the comedy isn’t trying too hard to be funny. Does The Dinner Table Detective fit those criteria? Yes, in a way. The whole premise of The Dinner Table Detective is to be a comedic mystery story where the leads are both detectives trying to solve crimes. Though, I do worry whether the comedy will overtake the mystery aspect.
The story is mainly about Reiko Hosho, heiress of the famous Hosho group. By day, she’s the prim and proper lady with a bit of a clumsy side, but she has a secret in that she’s actually a detective working to solve crimes. Only her close friends know her secret, so when she goes to her friend Ayaka’s father’s 60th birthday party and a murder case happens, she changes from lady to detective and is ready to solve a case alongside her boss Kyoichiro Kazamatsuri, a rich socialite also working as a detective. However, there is a mysterious bespectacled butler aiding Reiko from a distance…
The leads are absolutely hilarious. They’re rich people who also work as detectives yet they’re extremely incompetent at their jobs. It should be appalling, yet the story makes it surprisingly endearing to see them be extremely dumb about the case they’re trying to solve. It makes you wonder how they got their license and who the heck is hiring them. Hosho is basically the straight man to Kazamatsuri’s funny guy as she’s the one making quips and talking back. I think Kazamatsuri’s Japanglish is funny because he’s trying too hard to look cultured and intelligence but he got one brain cell. It also helps that Hosho and Kazamatsuri being voiced by Kana Hanazawa and Mamoru Miyano amps up the comedy.
Kageyama is an unusual case where he’s not a detective and has the role of the assistant character, yet he’s the one solving the mystery. He’s sort of like Ron Kamonohashi where he’s using Toto as a stand-in for his detective work in a way, Because Hosho cannot figure out the case on her own, she has to rely on this mysterious butler towards the end. I just hope he’s not always going to be used as a cheat sheet when things get tough because the last thing I need in a mystery show is for the actual detectives to be unable to solve mysteries. Though, I do find him hilarious with how blunt he is by calling Hosho a moron for not solving a completely obvious case.
Other than Hanazawa and Miyano, Yuki Kaji is also in this anime as Kageyama the butler. It’s crazy how stacked the leads are in this anime. The side characters are also stacked in terms of name. There’s Yui Ishikawa voicing the meek and gloomy Hinako and Mutsumi Tamura as the boyish Kaori. Satoshi Hino voices Teshogi.
The bad thing about first cases is that sometimes, they’re too easy to solve because of process of elimination. It’s crazy how they’re not questioning Hinako as she’s the only other one wearing a red dress. I guess it makes sense that she’s not wearing a green jewel like the others, but at least realize that she was surprised to see that the bloodied woman was Mizuho? Like, I already figured this out!
I was surprised to see this is animated by Madhouse. If you’re not familiar with Madhouse, they’re the animation studio behind animes like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, My Love Story With Yamada At Lv. 999, and Cardcaptor Sakura to name a few examples. It’s not that the animation is bad, but it’s not what I expected Madhouse to animate, but it’s nice to look at!
I guess my other gripe with this show is that the mystery has to be divided into parts. Whether it be good or bad for the anime is really up to how the entire anime goes. Sometimes, dividing up cases can be good, but it could also be a deterrence. Let’s see how this will play out… What are your thoughts on this anime?

This was already anime of the season and I loved it, but this episode blew the last two out of the water. This was insane from a character development, technical and yuri perspective 😭 We officially have our band and goal, the road to Fuji Rock starts now!

Otoha and Lilisa’s “collaboration” this week got KINKY, that BDSM vibe came out of nowhere lmao, rockgasm is what I’m gonna start calling these scenes, but I love how they show us what Lilisa and Otoha are feeling during their performances. These after school performances are the only time of the day when they can truly be themselves in get lost in the pure ecstasy of music. Nothing else matters, for just a short span, music and trying to outdo themselves is the only thing on their mind.

From a technical standpoint it still amazes me how far we’ve come with 3DCGI. That battle looked so good, but narratively I love how the fiery animation style reflected Lilisa being angry at herself, Otoha and the world. She’s been hiding all the things she really loves for years and then all of a sudden here comes this girl who doesn’t care at all and just embraces her love of music, so it’s kinda like Lilisa realizing she’s wasted years of her life suppressing her urges and projecting this false version of herself.

“Wanna start a band” and that line right there is basically the start of Lilisa’s new life. She’s gotta stop being mean to Otoha at school tho! She’s such a tsundere 😂 Also note that even as she slips up and does “unladylike” stuff at school, all the girls still praise her because news flash, silly, they like and respect YOU! Just be yourself! She’ll continue trying to be the perfect maiden, but I expect her definition of what that looks like will change as the series goes on.

Great episode!

So far, The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom is shaping up to be a really great anime about recovery from emotional and verbal abuse.
The main character felt that the lack of love she received from her parents was a result of her lack of "natural charm" and that she needed to make up for it by being "perfect" in order for them to love her. Then, when she is, well, tossed aside by her fiancé and sold to another kingdom, she finds herself among people who accept her for who she is, who actually appreciate her. And she has no idea what to do.
I'm excited to see where this goes. She feels very much like a real person.

There's some really good anime this season! Last season it was the continuations that caught my eye (apothacary diary, solo leveling, shangri-la frontier) but this season... there are... three? four?
So Fire Force and Windbreaker are both continuations, but they started really strong! The sort of episodes where you get to the end and go 'wow! that went fast!'
There's a reincarnated king (the beginning after the end) and it was a surprise - 2 eps in and I am really keen to see how our little guy develops.
The too Perfect Saint is tossed aside - this is one where I've read the manga and enjoyed it, and I have to say they've done a great job. I think that the anime is better than the manga, but it's been a while since I read it. (I am a fan of saintesses)
Only one episode so far of The Gorilla Gods Go-To Girl, but damn I think I am going to enjoy it! Probably my fave so far (but one ep, one only)
The Brilliant Healer's new life in the shadows - I had a good feeling about this one. the first ep was so-so, but the second is definitely setting it up to be the sort of show I like!
And there is one that hasn't started yet about a reincarnated prince... which is like 90% of what I read, so also waiting to start that!
Anyway! lots of light action and comedy, so I am keen keen keen!

Heard some complaints that the backgrounds are just traced over, but for those of us that don't have the means to see it in person, this is great.
