Here's a MASSIVE Sonic 3 interview, featuring scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller, as well as co-producer Tyson Hesse. This was recorded before the film's release so minimal spoilers.

I really suggest watching the whole thing, there's plenty of cool info about the production of these movies. I compiled some of the highlights under the cut:

- It was SEGA's request to make Movie Sonic an alien. This is a remnant from when they were commited to the "Two Worlds" idea, before they changed their mind on that.

- According to Pat Casey and Josh Miller, part of the reason that the Sony version of the movie fell apart is that they (along with Jeff Fowler, Tim Miller and Neil Moritz) wanted Sonic to be the main character, while the studio pushed for the human actor to be the star.

- There was an outline where Sonic befriended a kid (based on E.T). Tim Miller thought the character was pointless, since Sonic is already the kid, so they decided to pair him up with an adult instead.

- They refer to "The Little Mermaid", "Superman" and "Hellboy" as inspiration for Sonic's story in the first movie.

- The Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds were combined to avoid having eight different macguffins in one film, and also to avoid comparisons with "Avengers: Infinity War".

- Pat Casey and Josh Miller feel like part of the job is to NOT be lore experts, but rather people who can look at these things purely as a movie.

- Jim Carrey doesn't like to repeat himself, so they always try to throw new stuff at him every movie so he's more likely to return. This led them to the idea of having him play Gerald. The studio immediately loved the idea, and so did Jim.

- One of the things they knew had to change was the ARK, as the idea of a space colony orbiting Earth for 50 years without anyone noticing didn't mesh well with the grounded world they had set up.

- In some versions Gerald Robotnik was alive as a chaos energy ghost, stuck in-between time.

- They felt Shadow's backstory was extremely important, but knew they could only have so many flashbacks, hence why they wanted to pull aspects of it into the present (such as Gerald).

- Gerald's inclusion was also done to keep Shadow's story from feeling like a retread of Knuckles'. It also helps that while Knuckles' conflict is based on a misunderstanding, Shadow's isn't.

- Tyson Hesse thinks that while keeping Gerald alive at first felt weird to him as a long-time fan, it gave Ivo a lot more to chew on as a character and kept his story from getting stale.

- Jim Carrey's multiple comments regarding Robotnik's broken childhood and hidden vulnerabilities inspired them to explore that side of the character in Sonic 3.

- Pat Casey and Josh Miller's always like to add a little bit of heart where they can. They point to the baseball scene and the bucket list in the first movie, as well the scene between Agent Stone and Tails in 3.

-Jim Carrey first does his scenes exactly as scripted, then tries his own versions, which almost always end up being funnier. Very little of what's in the script actually stays.

- Keanu Reeves was the number one choice for Shadow. With every other character there was a lot of deliberation, but with Shadow they don't think other options were even considered.

- At one point Idris Elba was worried about Knuckles' fear of ghosts being out of character, so they did some research and found out it was already a thing. They can't remember if they got that character trait from somewhere or if it was coincidental.

- Sonic 3 and the Knuckles series were worked on at the same time. Pat Casey and Josh Miller weren't involved, as they were busy with the movie script. Tyson Hesse was involved during the initial stages of the show, leading the story department, but had to leave as soon as production on 3 started.

- They've kept almost the exact same creative team thorough all three movies, including their VFX Supervisor and Animation Director. This helped streamline process, as everyone is already familiar with each other and how things work.

- They point out how rare it is to have a franchise where everyone involved wants to keep coming back. They attribute this to the fact that these movies are entirely staffed by nice people who get along, which isn't too common.

- They claim that the Sonic 3 set was one of the calmest sets they've ever been in. Even all the Gerald and Ivo stuff, which seemed so complicated to make, was hardly an issue.

- With Sonic 2 they ran into some problems due to relying on a single VFX vendor. For Sonic 3 they ran the movie as if they were the VFX vendor, they had all the animators in-house and had all the character assets made internally.

- Tyson Hesse claims that SEGA was completely changed by the movies, and that everything coming out is being done better than it was before. He hopes fans will be able to appreciate how much the movies lifted up the franchise.

Well imagine if you were in his shoes. You are transported to some kind of unknown world. And absolutely no one arounds you speaks the same language as you.

Sneep has no way of knowing this is a digital plane. He has no idea if the people around him are real or not, he cant remember his name and no one can explain to him why that is. His body looks different, he feels different, no one around him looks to be a human.. just imagine how scary that is. Not having the comfort of things being explained to you in this situation. Not having the comfort of someone telling you "everything will be okay".

Yeah, I'd lose my mind pretty quick too 💀

XD No worries! And yeah I started playing Warframe for the first time these past few days. Its been fun so far, Mag being my favorite. (She's the only frame I have <XDD)

I have my eyes out for Titania Prime, Trinity Prime, Mag prime and Mirage Prime. I'm thinking Titania might be my new favorite if I can snag one!

This game is fun, but the longer I play it? The more I miss OG Overwatch 😅 I tried playing TF2 again today and it just isn't the same 😔💔

Hello! So far my tablet is still alive. Although I'm looking into getting my laptop checked out and maybe replacing somethings... 😔

The thing that upsets Gummigoo isn't just that his mom isn't real necessarily, its that his memories of her aren't real too. He remembers all these experiences with this person but the memories aren't real...

And the whole reason why Caine let the brothers stay was because he hoped it would help Pomni adjust to the circus. Just like Bella did for Gangle. Bringing up NPCs or things from the Gators adventure could upset or confuse them so Caine wouldn't want to risk it. <:(

G.U.N's lessons in Hedgehogs

Sonic 3 spoilers, but some of GUN's actions has been questionable, but I think Shadow's existence helps explain things.

Like why did GUN allow Tom, who had just broken into GUN headquarters and was involved in stealing a super weapon, was allowed to be brought to a hospital and why the entire Wachowski family was left alone?

Or why the Wachowski family IS largely left alone after Sonic 2.

And I think Shadow is why GUN changed up their approach after the wedding scene.

Commander Walters was there when Shadow was imprisoned and is of the opinion Shadow was too dangerous to be free, but too valuable to destroy. So an imprisoned Hedgehog for whenever they might find a use for him.

Obviously GUN was approaching Sonic with much the same thought process. He's valuable, but also needs to be controlled. And of course their first thought is to imprison him.

But after the escape at the wedding, they are content to leave them alone. As long as they stay in Green Hills. The fact they are tracking if the trio leave Green Hills shows they are still concerned about them being a danger. Sure, Sonic saved the world from Robotnik, but this is GUN and most of the soldiers have trust issues with aliens, including Commander Walters who did Operation Catfish.

So it seems doubtful Sonic was given a pass SOLELY because he stopped Robotnik. Shady organizations like their control too much. So what happened?

Commander Walters saw how far Sonic's family would go for him. And how protective Sonic was of them.

Commander Walters saw what happened with Shadow. Shadow was running with Maria and Gerald. Shadow was, at no point, engaging in any sort of combat until AFTER Maria was killed. Shadow only became a threat once he was in mourning and he blamed GUN. Likely whatever use they could make of Shadow would have to be VERY careful and very desperate.

But Sonic (and Tails and Knuckles) had a family. Sonic did want to help people. Which meant, suddenly, Commander Walters saw a containment FAR more effective than a stasis chamber and a way that would mean being able to use Sonic Team easier.

Walters recognized this difference between the two. Shadow had lost his family and he was a danger. Sonic had a family and was determined as a usable asset.

The reason GUN is worried about them leaving Green Hills is a concern because it might mean trouble in the family.

The reason GUN let a man who broke into their headquarters to steal a super weapon be brought to a hospital.

The reason GUN left them alone after movie three and all those stunts.

Its because GUN has PROTOCOLS to keep the Wachowski's alive and the family content. Because as long as Sonic has a family to love and protect, he's going to want to protect the world. And with promise of largely leaving them in peace, GUN could have a lot of leverage to getting Sonic's help when needed.

Because Walters saw what happened with Shadow and he'd rather keep Sonic happy as long as possible because he's a far more useful asset when he's content.

Which, honestly, would be a nice change of pace for a shady organization. Remember folks, if you're nice to your superweapons, they're far more likely to do what you want.

Little facts! Shadow’s air shoes and limiters were created by Tails! He wanted to help make things easier on his brother and realised how much pain he would be in when he drew forth his chaos energy, which is why he made the limiters (he just thought the air shoes would be cool. Shadow agreed.) Eventually does the same for Sonic since his chaos energy is very difficult to control due to its links to his emotions (powers are very much based on Movie Sonic).

Also Sonic hatessss his boots 😭😭😭 They’re heavy and metal and restrictive and they drive him mad. They were to keep him from escaping from the scientists on the ARK, however the metal has weakened over his 50 years of stasis and isn’t as difficult to maneuverer in now. He still hates them though. He would get rid of them but… they’re all he has left of Gerald now. They’re a good reminder of his mission. (He also straight up does NOT know how to take them off, they’d probably have to take a buzzsaw to them at this point 😭)

Sonic: Basically has Shadow's backstory! But was used to power the ark for the most part whilst the scientists tried to figure out how to use his chaos energy to cure Maria. Very cocky and confident (he's the fastest thing alive, after all) but prone to outbursts when reminded of his life on the ARK. Actually thinks Shadow is cool but would never admit it, especially as it doesnt matter anymore. Gerald gave him a mission and he *will* accomplish it. For him. For her.

Shadow: The world's hero. Came to earth 15 years ago in a meteorite. Still related to the black arms. G.U.N is suspicuous of him due to his alien nature and similarities to the hedgehog in their containment, however due to fame (which he hates), they can't do anything publically. Looking for an excuse to detain him. Struggled when he first came to earth but was able to figure it out. Adopted Tails because he didnt want him to suffer like he did.

As far as having no girls in the sonic movies I'm kinda in that in between zone

Cause one hand I would've loved for there to be more female characters from the start (and characters like maddie coud have been given more screen time and/or been more fleshed out since the first installment)

And on the other hand, i do recognize that they're probably going by fan favs and who's more easily recognizable/easy to sell. While they're adding shadow to this particular universe, it seems kinda unfair to add a character like amy or rouge simply because they just can't properly introduce them *and* do shadows intro/backstory because they're all just big characters who deserve more than *poof they're here now*.

I do agree that we need more female characters in the movies (as well as the sonic franchise in general), but at the same time just adding a character that's not properly defined would probably hurt more than it would help

I gotta disagree with this because, if it were true, why is Gerald in there, alive and well? Why do they keep introducing new human characters? I'm not saying they ALL needed to be dumped into Sonic 3, but I'm definitely saying it's strange that nothing of value was done with the Knuckles show when it came to the potential it had with setting up characters for Sonic 3. Like. Introduce Rouge in the Knuckles show because it makes sense, introduce Amy in Sonic 3. Why did they do what they did?

Echoes of the Ark Part 11:

Somewhere far off, Sonic regained consciousness. His surroundings were dark and strange.

“Great,” he muttered, using his most sarcastic tone. “Kidnapped by mystery bots. Just another Tuesday.”

Sonic groaned as he sat up, the faint tingling from the energy net fading. His surroundings came into focus.

“Where am I?” he began standing and stretching out his limbs. As his eyes adjusted, he caught sight of a large observation window. Beyond it was dozens of stars and a view of a green and blue planet—earth.

“Whoa…” Sonic’s breath hitched as he stepped closer to the window. “No way. I’m in space? But how—”

The sudden sound of approaching footsteps caught his attention. Sonic spun around, tensing as a door slid open with a hiss.

A figure emerged, a robotic mask covered their face, hiding any hint of their identity, but their voice carried an unsettling calmness.

“Shadow,” the figure said, their tone both clinical and oddly warm. “I’ve finally found you.”

Sonic raised an eyebrow, “Uh, hi?" he returned the greeting, "Did you say Shadow? Because I’m Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog. You know, blue blur, fastest thing alive?"

The figure tilted their head, “Shadow…” they repeated, ignoring his protest. “You’re disoriented. It’s to be expected after everything you’ve been through. But don’t worry—you’re safe now.”

“Safe?” Sonic scoffed, “You kidnapped me from earth with those creepy robots of yours and dragged me to space. Forgive me if I don’t feel all warm and fuzzy about this.”

The figure stepped closer, and Sonic instinctively took a step back. “I don’t want to hurt you,” they said softly. “I’ve been searching for so long. I never stopped believing that you’d return to me.”

The masked figure’s words sent a chill down Sonic’s spine, but not because of fear. There was something odd about their tone—something almost… paternal.

“Look, I hate to burst your bubble, but I’m not Shadow. You’ve got the wrong hedgehog.” Sonic said, trying to keep his tone light.

The figure fell silent for a moment, studying Sonic with an intensity that made him uneasy. Finally, they spoke again, “No… I would know you anywhere, Shadow. Even after all these years.”

The pieces began to fall into place in Sonic’s mind, and his eyes widened. “Wait a second…” he thought for a moment, "You're saying you knew Shadow before he woke up, 50 years ago?”

The figure hesitated. Then, they reached up and removed their mask with a soft hiss of air. Beneath it was an aged face, lined with years of toil and grief. Sonic’s jaw dropped the face held a familiar resemblance.

“You look like Egghead—Or he looks like you is more like it... you're Dr. Gerald Robotnik!” he exclaimed. “But you’re supposed to be… You’re supposed to be dead?”

Gerald’s eyes softened, a faint smile crossing his face. “Death is not always the end, Shadow. Sometimes, it is merely a pause… an intermission in a greater purpose.”

Sonic took a step back, mind racing. “You’re saying you survived… all this time? And you’ve been here? Then, I must be on the ARK space station!”

“Not survived,” Gerald corrected. “Rebuilt. Preserved. My work—my legacy—could not simply be allowed to fade away. Not while there was still so much to accomplish.”

“And now your looking for Shadow, why?”

Gerald’s expression darkened, a shadow passing over his features. “The ARK was also one of my greatest creations, a testament to the heights of my ingenuity. But it was also where everything I held dear was taken from me. Shadow, you were more than a project; you are my hope. I’ve waited so long to see you again… to continue what we began together.”

Sonic remembered the stories—how Gerald had created Shadow as the ultimate lifeform, how the ARK had been a place of both scientific discovery and tragedy. But something about this felt off.

“Okay, let’s say I believe you,” Sonic said cautiously. “If you’re so smart, how come you can’t tell I’m not Shadow? He, you know… doesn’t have my charming personality.”

Gerald’s eyes narrowed slightly, and for the first time, a hint of frustration broke through his calm demeanor. “You are Shadow. The confusion you’re experiencing must be from residual damage during or before your return. But I can fix that.”

“Fix?” Sonic repeated. “Yeah, that’s gonna be a hard pass, Doc. I don’t need fixing. If you are who you say, then send me back to earth. I'm not Shadow, but I do know him. Funny story: we actually just became roommates, besides also date—well, I'll let him tell you more about that. He'd be pretty happy to see you too..." Sonic took a second glance at the state of the scientist in front of him. "Um...I think?” he winced.

Sonic tensed as Gerald Robotnik— or what was left of him— stepped forward, “You don’t understand, Shadow. If you leave now, the ARK’s secrets—our future—will be lost again. You’ve already been taken from me once. I cannot allow it to happen all over again.”

Sonic pushed down the urge to correct him once again of who he was. Gerald thought he was Shadow— and that could either work in his favor or really backfire. Either way, he needed information.

“Future? What future? What are you really planning here, old man?”

Gerald’s expression remained unreadable, but something flickered in his artificial eyes. “You’ll know soon enough,” he said smoothly. “But for now, don’t concern yourself with such burdens.”

Sonic felt a chill crawl up his spine as Gerald stepped even closer, looking at him as if analyzing a faulty piece of machinery.

“Do not worry, my boy, I've always taken good care of you, haven’t I?" Gerald assured, "Hm, I'm seeing your chaos energy levels are practically non-existant." Gerald looked concerned, his parental tone returning. "Once I’ve fixed you, once you’re better, then everything will be set in motion.”

Sonic’s ears flattened. Yeah, okay. That’s definitely not creepy at all.

Sonic glanced out the observation window again. He wasn’t just trapped in space. He was stranded on a rebuilt space station, held captive by a rebooted dead man... or in technical terms: a robotic ghost, who had clawed his way back through circuits and steel.

SONIC 3 WAS SO GOOD!!!

Extended thoughts below:

The action scenes are by far the best they’ve ever been in the whole series. They’ve really improved how they visually represent Sonic’s speed. The only exception is the gravity scene at GUN HQ, which I think dragged on a little too long and overall wasn’t as impactful as, say, fighting a GUN mech with those same gravity abilities would’ve been.

Keanu is ok as Shadow. If you’ve seen the trailers, that’s about the level he keeps it at for the whole movie. I think I would’ve been more sold on him if he gave a bigger “MARIA!!” when she died.

In the first act, I felt like the movie was kind of on autopilot. Things just kind of happened without a ton of buildup, and the script kind of lacked flavor for the expository scenes. For example: when Sonic asks Olive Garden Guy™ about Shadow, he just starts expositing Shadow’s lore without anything like “this information is top secret, tell no one else about this” or “it’s painful to think about…I wish I could just act like it never happened” or even Sonic questioning how/why Shadow came from a meteorite. Just lore exposition without flavor from the rest of the cast. Throughout the movie, the dialogue felt very on the nose. I wish it was a little more subtle, but it’s a kids movie I get it.

On that note, the movie feels like it just has a checklist of SA2 iconography they had to tick off rather than more naturally integrating that kind of stuff into the plot. For the larger story it works well, like with Shadow and Maria, but stuff like the Chao Garden and “talk about a low budget flight!” just kind of felt…tacked on. In the moment it’s fine because I’m too busy aggressively pointing at the screen, but for someone not as invested in the series as I am, it feels a little random and clunky.

The movie really kicks up when Shadow starts having Maria flashbacks. The little montage they have with them together was so good. The cold cut to the record player stopping was so well done.

In retrospect, when just looking at this movie and not the rest of the franchise, I think Maria and Gerald’s relationship could’ve had some more focus. They never mention anything about Maria being sick in the movie, so it’s not clear why she’s there at the research station to begin with. That being said, Gerald telling Ivo “you’re no Maria” towards the end was gut wrenching. My theater audibly ooh’d.

@allshaftsfall and I were betting that the reason Gerald is still alive would’ve been through time travel shenanigans (which would set up the next movie), but, bizarrely enough, it just seems like Gerald is genuinely that old. He mentions he’s 110. But…how? Did he just survive that long? Did he use Shadow’s quill to expand his lifespan? It’s never explained.

I’m glad they had Knuckles and Tails continue to be proactive and do things instead of just being relegated to cheerleaders and/or comic relief. Knuckles in particular wound up hard carrying Sonic and Tails through most of the action setpieces.

There’s a scene where Tails talks to Agent Stone about being Sonic’s friend and not his assistant like Stone thinks he is, and Tails asks Stone “aren’t you and Eggman best friends too?” Stone replies verily sorrowfully “yeah…friends. Totally friends.” I know it’s meant to read as Stone wishing Eggman treated him better but I could not see it as anything other than Stone thinking “he’s my lover!” but thinking he can’t say that to Tails bc he thinks Tails is homophobic.

YET ANOTHER GOD DAMN CASPER REFERENCE. I cannot believe that both this and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, my two most hyped movies of the year, both had Casper references in them. I’m losing my mind.

I am so mad they didn’t actually kill off Tom. The setup was right there. They even parallel Sonic grieving him to Shadow grieving over Maria! But noooo he survives. When will we be free of human cop dad.

DUDE. The Super Sonic/Super Shadow fight was SO FUCKING GOOD. Worth the price of admission alone.

I kinda figured Live and Learn was gonna be in the movie going in from how much everyone’s been #KnowingSmile posting about it, but honestly? I was more hyped hearing Eggman’s theme from Unleashed start playing. It was way more of a “oh my god, it’s the thing!” moment. That being said HOLY SHIT LIVE AND LEARN PEAK!!!!!! The movie’s OST had a lot more of a rock influence and I couldn’t be happier.

I have some miscellaneous “I liked this better in SA2” stuff (pissing on the moon, Shadow’s heel-face turn, etc.), but all of them I understand why the filmmakers did what they did so they’re just nitpicks.

The end credits scene is kind of insane because it’s super long. It just feels like a scene from the next movie. Metal looks a little rough, but I’m sure they’ll polish him up for the next movie. They’re probably going to lean into Amy being a magic fortune teller girl given how she shows up in a dark cloak and floats in the air. I hope she’s gonna keep the fangirl energy, but I doubt it. Very interesting choice to do multiple Metal Sonics, though, especially since Sega only likes using the one Metal Sonic rather than having different copies running around. My prediction for the next movie is that Neo Metal Sonic will be the main villain and he’s controlling all the other Metal Sonics from afar.

OK im a speak my thoughts on the movie, I'm a try to cover everything i remember

Also Knuckles being afraid of ghost makes sense i keep forgetting i played Adv2 and friend reminded me that oh yeah he dose fear ghost even Casper

Anyways now MARIA GHAAAAAAAA I LOVED HER SHE SO SWEET AND CUTE AND IT IS NICE TO SEE HER JUST BE A NORMAL KID WHO JUST HAPPEND TO LIVE WITH HER GRANDFATHER and also the fact she roller skates, plays music and dose arts which IM SO GLAD ABOUT HEHEH and was just being a kid was just so sweet

The way she finds a way to get shadow out of the lab and it's by using a teddy bear my HEART and maria being reckless and a bit of trouble maker is SO HER

And and she used shadow as a way to get around faster hit me at my childhood I was shadow as a kid my lil cuz would tie a rope to my bike and I would just bike around as they did nothing. 🤣

Idk i feel like the movie needed more time to get more things fleshed out it dosent fully feel like they got everything there

Seeing the film now i understand why Amy or anyone else couldn't be in it their just wasn't enough time

though I already knew this i just felt like complaining about it bc I was grieving the fact they took Amy's scene but since in the movie shadow doesnt lose his memories so Amy wouldn't be able to do much and helping him remember if their nothing to remember it wouldn't be impactful, i do hope they interactat some point they are a cute duo

I think more time was needed too because of Director rockwell, you saw the way she started taking charge and looking like she was gonna take over Commander Walter's place and be new leader it felt like there was gonna be more with her like a betrayal and turn over power to her making herself the leader and those could explain why commander Walter just give the key to sonic bc idk why trust him so easly WITH THE KEY TO DESTROYING THE FUCKING PLANET???

Also the fact the Donut Lord was able to just easly fool her didn't feel satisfying she gave up way to fast for someone who looked like her roles were gonna lead to something even if it was just plane hate for sonic and his friends.

Also I can see why shadow may not like tails Bro literally almost drowned him and stone and interrupted his Novela and didnt even let him eat his "Revenge Guacamole"

Also i do like how shadow remained loyal to Gerald throughout the whole thing really shows how much he cares about the family he as left and how he was fine with dieing if it ment avenging Maria

But I find it interesting that he questions his action a bit late like dude you just now thought about that? I think it would have been better if he questions his action from the beginning but kept using the excuse that this is what Maria wanted or something like that it would given maybe a bit more build up to what Gerald says to him to make him stop questions it

Obviously their no way Maria wanted to destroy the earth even Gerald knew that yet never says it out loud just says "remember what they took from us" and that was enough for shadow to stop thinking about it

Also THE FUCKING FACT SHADOW JUST BEEN LIVING THE SAME NIGHTMARE FOR 50 YEARS HURTS ME POOR GUY

And the fact he says that the sadness was kinda what he got use to and ever knew

Also he didn't seem to be too young when. He arrived to earth so dose he have amnesia from wherever he was from what was his childhood before maria did he even have one? U would think they would have diesected him and study him while be was put to sleep/frozen for so long

He's been reliving the same events for so long but one day it was enough to wake him up thx to Gerald

Also DOES GEROLD GO TO Comicons?!?! bc ahhh he was saveing that giant arm for it XD

Also speaking on Maria again I'm a bit disappointed by the fact they decide to not cover the fact that Maria was sick or that shadow was supposed to be a cure for her as well as a weapon

I need more scene of the both of them and their lives back in the research facility

I don't think the cover much on him even being the ultimate life form at all or the other experiment or the FACT THEY ARE NOT IN SPACE

Its interesting how shadow and Maria don't have to many lines together it feels like she only talked 1 or twice and that's it i wish their was MORE OF THEM

Also i found it interesting how shadow kept mentioning during their fight that sonic became just like him when it came to revenge and how he kept mentioning that sonic left to fight him against his friends wishes it feels like he saying he shouldn't have made the choice he did kinda like saying he would have done better if he was in his position or like he should be grateful (idk that's just my view on that scene i liked it)

Also the way sonic tells shadow that the pain doesn't go away but he can change the way he views that pain and how he can remember that the love he had for her will always stay

Its sweet but didn't feel that impactful as I thought it would be the word were but idk i think they should have lingered a bit more on the scene or something it feels a bit fast paste at time.

ALSO HAS ANYONE SEEN SHADOWS EYES ARE PINK WHEN HE GOES SUPER?!?!?!?! YESSSSSSSSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAHHHHHH

Also LOVE HOW SHADOW AND SONIC BATTLE TOGETHER IN THE END THEY WERE AWESOME

But then in the final part when trying to stop the laser from killing the earth later separate them with sonic kinda takeing the place of shadow falling scene and shadow just goes poof for a bit

Oh my God guys they actually chose a child actress for presumably Maria. This is fantastic news

Maria's bond to Shadow and relevance to his character, is intrinsically tied into the anti-military message of the OG SaB2 storyline. Ageing her up would have been tragic, of course, but it wouldn't carry the same weight. Maria didn't choose to live on the ARK, she wasn't an adult who was in charge of how she wanted to live or where she wanted to go. Gerald Robotnik made those decisions for her with her best interests at heart as any good parent (or in this case, grandfather) would do. She was terminally ill. She was on the ARK so that she could receive immediate treatment for her terminal illness once Robotnik found a cure via Project Shadow. And you know, the ARK would've been an incredibly sterile place-- another safeguard to keep her alive. It's even said the lighter gravity on-board helped ease her progressing disease.

And due to decisions made by the U.S Military based on arbitrary reasoning, they shot her. Point blank. She had no weapon, she was running away, and she was twelve years old.

She was only on the ARK because the same people that authorised her murder, had authorised Project Shadow ergo, the ARK, to begin with.

Robotnik wanted to heal. To help. He took the offer from the U.S Military to lead the Project, because an 'Utimate Life-Form' would theoretically be medically Perfect. No genetic mishaps, no illnesses, viruses, or anything to threaten its life outside of physical attacks. Something like that, could become a blueprint for cures. He could cure Maria, and ontop of that, start to heal others like her.

The caveat of course, was to create a lifeform with immortality and he decided if there was a chance to give his granddaughter an opportunity to grow up and see adulthood, the price was worth paying.

However his experiments whilst chaotic in nature did too well and the whole thing was shut down. All personnel related to Project Shadow with the exception of Robotnik himself, were to be killed. Age, race, relation, rank, if you worked on Project Shadow or knew what it was, you were to be shot on sight.

And that's why sonic/shadow fans go so rabid for ANY Sab2 content as this backstory ties into the whole plot of the game whose main links run straight to Maria Robotnik's fate.

Granted, it has become somewhat of a meme regarding how many times we get to see her die and in how many formats of that horrific sequence of events but the root message behind it carries more weight than many post Sab2 games. In fact, we rarely get to see such narrative driven themes from SEGA due to its constant mis-handling of the sonic franchise.

So yea, shoot that blond child on screen in cinemas. I want that white girl ELIMINATED on screen in front of parents who thought it was going to be a "lol sonic go fast" movie. The Masses Must Know that Sonic games Can and Will Go Hard (when Sega puts effort in.)

My Sonic Movie 3 Predictions

So I initially planned to make this post AFTER my SonicxShadow Generations post.

Unfortunately life happened and I'm still writing that.

AND I won't be able to watch the movie until 3-4 weeks after the release date...

So, here are my predictions for Sonic 3. Stuff I believe will happen, how likely I believe it will happen, and why I believe so.

UPDATE: I am aware that recently, the movie's plot and post-credit scene got leaked. So I just wanted to state that all of this was written on the 14th of December when there were no leaks. I am not hinting anything or spoiling the movie. If you have seen the leaks, please avoid confirming or denying anything on the list as you may spoil the movie for people who are interested.

THESE ARE JUST PREDICTIONS. NOT SPOILERS

Super Shadow (VERY Likely)

Shadow will live (Likely)

Dr. Eggman's fate will be ambigious again (Likely)

Gerald is immortal and will drop the goofy persona in the final act (Somewhat Likely)

The ACTUAL Live and Learn song will play (Very Likely)

Maria won't be shot (Somewhat Likely)

Team Heroes will betray G.U.N (Somewhat Likely)

As for my opinions on it and why...

If you have no knowledge on Sonic outside of the movies, then consider this a spoiler warning

Super Shadow (VERY Likely)

Okay let's get the obvious out of the way. This is happening, we all know it. Not much to say. He will probably go super with Sonic and stop the Ark or something...

Shadow will live and learn (Likely)

It's important to remember that at the end of the day. The Sonic movies are FAMILY movies. So, I highly doubt they would kill a fan favourite like Shadow or confirm him as dead. Also, if they plan on making more movies, they may need Shadow.

However, I won't mind him being for one movie only, it could feel more impactful. But I understand many may disagree with that.

(Off topic but I hope Sonic says "Sayonara Shadow the Hedgehog")

Dr Eggman's fate will be ambigious again (Likely)

Now, this may sound like a weird prediction to make but bear with me here. I'm not saying that it will be unclear if he dies or not at the end of the movie like at the end of Sonic 2, but rather, it will be unclear if he continue being the villain for future movies. I believe this for two reasons.

Jim Carrey's retirement plans and the ending to Sonic Adventure 2.

Jim Carrey's retirement news has been very wishy-washy. It certainly seems he will return whenever he wants to but that means the writers cannot confirm his presence for future movies because of this.

This also pairs well with the ending to Sonic Adventure 2

I believe Eggman will have a moment with Tails similar to this scene. For Jim Carrey's Eggman, this scene will show the ambiguity of Eggman's actions for the next few movies. He will talk about Gerald and we will be left wondering whether he will turn over a new leaf.

(Tho, I do not know for sure what will become of Gerald by the end of the movie, since he wasn't executed. Not a fan of that change, but I will keep an open mind.)

Speaking of Gerald...

Gerald is immortal and will drop the goofy persona in the final act (Somewhat Likely)

To be honest I dislike the "Goofy villain suddenly gets mean and serious near the end" cliche. In fact, I do not like the idea of a goofy Gerald even if he is just pretending because it doesn't feel like he will emit that feeling of insanity birthed from grief.

And yet...I feel like that's where the movie is heading so it's best I learn to deal with this possibility so as to not ruin my enjoyment.

Let's talk about the immortality thing instead.

HOW ON EARTH IS HE STILL ALIVE?! I believe in the movie's universe, Gerald did eventually discover immortality using Shadow. But instead of handing it over to G.U.N, he used it on himself and went into hiding, waiting for the day he can get revenge with Shadow.

On paper, not only does this sound like the most probable, ITS ALSO KINDA COOL? Sadly the "Goofy Gerald" act throws me off sorta.

The ACTUAL Live and Learn song will play (Very Likely)

With the reveal of the ending song being "Run It", a country pop song, many have began to doubt if Live and Learn will actually play in the movie. I believe it will.

Instead of the ending credits, the song will definitely play during the final battle which eventually leads to Shadow's sacrifice. I know it's just baseless speculation on my end but the reason why I believe so is because of how much they advertise the movie as a love letter to Sonic fans in interviews. It would be crazy if they didn't add the song.

I believe that they will add the Sonic Symphony's version of the song. I listened to the symphony's version and it genuinely sounds fitting for a climactic showdown on a movie-scale.

I will still keep my expectations low because we may just get a orchestral version of it instead....fingers crossed though!

Maria won't be shot (Somewhat Likely)

A common joke among fans is Maria getting shot. I see it online and I feel like it's become kind of a flex that the Sonic Movie will have such a scene. And it feels like so many people are convinced it WILL happen. I do want that scene because it highlights the core issue with G.U.N and how far they'd go.

However, the reason why I also believe the scene will not be shown is due to censorship and how they've gone from clearly insinuating how she died, to keeping it somewhat vague.

Take a recent game like Shadow Generations for example

No guns are shown, and if they were, it would be hard to see. But the implication was still there due to the gunshot sound.

But before, they wouldn't be subtle about it.

I don't know how they'll kill off Maria in the movie, but I hope its at least G.U.N's fault that it happened. No "accidents".

SCU G.U.N soldiers do carry guns so maybe they might imply the scene. But I would also not be so surprised if they changed it. I just hope the change makes sense. In other words, I hope the movie still treats her death how it was meant to be treated. A tragedy caused by those in power.

Please...PLEASE...do not glorify or excuse G.U.N's actions SCU...yea that's my main concern so that's why my next prediction feels more like a cope...

Team Heroes will betray G.U.N (Somewhat Likely)

Adventure 2 centered around Sonic getting falsely accused by the military and even getting captured by them for a while.

Hence, this is not only a prediction, but also a hope for the movie.

It's very obvious that in the SCU, Sonic works with the police and the government. He does it to be the "hero" of Earth, Knuckles and Tails follow him. Many people are upset over this and I agree. It feels off for Sonic to work WITH authorities or support them in any way.

But the thing is, Sonic is not really a static character in the SCU. He learns and grows. So I genuinely think that Sonic will work with G.U.N for the first and second act, then betray them in some form after learning the truth.

It doesn't need to be a big betrayal by Sonic, but rather a "I'm not following orders" mindset from him.

Time Travel may be involved (Likely)

This is a common theory, not a fan of it but it seems likely that it will happen. Look at all the damage that's caused. I feel like that volcanic area was destroyed land.

Not only that, the Moon was sliced, I don't see the movies keeping the Moon destroyed. It doesn't feel like the SCU want any "point of no return" for anything (I don't know if consequences is the right word here).

If they do time travel, I hope it isn't too hammered in. Maybe just a slight change to justify the climax without taking away any of the emotional impact. But I still wouldn't be a fan of it.

Amy and Metal Sonic for post-credit scene (VERY Likely)

Yea I feel like they're going to take inspiration from Sonic CD for the next movie.

It may be possible he will be created because Sonic gives a quill to Eggman in the first trailer as a deal. Which leads to Eggman creating Metal Sonic.

With the introduction of Metal Sonic, I don't see why they wouldn't introduce Amy (Then again they are adapting Adventure 2 without her or Rouge so...).

Oh but I also recall that those who attended the premiere said that the post-credits scene is "better" than the Shadow Reveal in Sonic 2...

Is it really going to be Silver? Nah, I still think it's Metal Sonic and Amy.

I don't believe Silver will be introduced right after Shadow because it would feel too similar to Shadow. Hedgehog vs Hedgehog. So why not place Hedgehog vs Robot Hedgehog in between?

I definitely won't mind if Silver and Blaze are in the post-credits scene though. Knowing that Sonic Team planned Year of Shadow with the movie as the grand conclusion, it makes me hope they make it a regular thing for other characters. Year of Silver? Sounds fun. Any character getting a year will be fun.

Conclusion

Geez this took a long time to write...but I'm glad I got all my predictions out now.

I do want to clarify something. Reading my post again, it seems that I'm speaking about the SCU in a slightly negative tone.

I won't say I dislike the movies. I'm just cautiously optimistic. I don't expect 1:1 adaptations from them, and I'm pretty sure Hollywood execs like to get in the way of creativity sometimes in order to focus on profit.

There is also an issue of target audience. The movies, at the end of the day, are for families. They're family movies and kids are the target audience. THAT'S NOT A BAD THING. It's just the reason why I don't expect too much, the plot still has to be quick and easy to follow. It can't be TOO dark either.

However, while I do look at the SCU as just "enjoyable spin-off media", I genuinely like the movies and I am excited to see what Sonic 3 has in store!

there was also not enough room in this movie for anything. the ONE scene that had gerald and maria was when she died. (more on her death later). him saying "my family died with her" made no sense, because we never saw them as family.

how did gerald get out?? like? he was kept for 50 years, old the heck did this 110 year old (also makes no sense that he's still alive, unless gun tried their best to keep him alive. which also makes no sense because it would be more convenient for him to be dead??) break out??

why were tom and maddie just... so okay with letting their children get dropped in japan to beat up an INCREDIBLY STRONG alien??? i feel like they should have asked more questions...

its... its a 12 hour flight from america to japan... they were in a heli, so it was probably short but... you're telling me shadow was loose for HOURS and he just... stayed in the same place??? man can skate on water, he definitely would have left before then.

the "haha, its almost like we're being played by the same actor in a movie! *turns towards camera*" was awful. funny haha, but... ew. unnecessary 4th wall breaking, i think.

THEY NEVER EXPLAINED SHADOW'S POWERS. CHAOS CONTROL? CHAOS SPEARS? NAH, THEY'LL KNOW WHATS HAPPENING. all my friends were so confused when shadow suddenly had rings off arrows around them. how was the fanmade short better at explaining than this??

maria had very little personality. again. shes just the fun loving girl who was besties with shadow. does she like science?? what are her dreams, her likes and dislikes??? AND WHY THE FUCK WAS SHE IN THE BUNKER. please... all it took was having her say something about it. like, in the scene on the roof of the bunker, "you can be whatever you want shadow! once i get better, we'll get out of this place, and into the outside world."

ahem. what the fuck were they cooking with her death. i'm absolutely fine with her not being shot onscreen but?? she was in the MIDDLE of gerald and shadow, how were they completely fine, and she was dead on the ground?? you're telling me that the 60-ish year old man was fine, but the seeming able-bodied young child wasn't?? when she was FURTHER from the explosion????

and her not sacrificing herself to save shadow takes away a lot of meaning to her death. they couldn've had her push shadow down, to get him out of the way of the explosion. but now her death makes very little sense.

so sonic and shadow can breathe in space, but tails cant?? okay.

tails could've had a big moment. instead he passec out, and knuckles had to save them. man. they could've had knuckles and tails go out together, with tails on knuckles' back to throw the ring and slow their descent. missed opportunity, and it made tails look brave and then immediately weak.

Amy Rose will be in Sonic 3, but not the way you think

Something people have been clamoring about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is weather or not Amy will make her cinematic debut. And to be fair, Amy is important to Shadow's character arc and ultimately the reason he decides to help Sonic and the other in saving the day. So it's understandable people are eager to see the pink hedgehog in this third movie.

The thing is, while I was never against the idea of Amy showing up, my brain always kinda got stuck on the logistics of "But how the fuck does Amy get to Earth?". Does she just show up like Tails did? Why does she come to Earth? Did she somehow see the events of the last two movies and now she's in love with Sonic and came to Earth some how because fuck it?

It's why, when the trailer came out, I wasn't that surprised when it didn't show Amy at any point. Because I genuinely couldn't think of a way for her to show up that made sense, and wasn't derivative of what happened with Tails. But then I started to think about it, and with Gerald Robotnik alive and part of the story now, I realized how Amy could show up in this movie, and it's gonna be weird; so bear with and let me put y'all on game:

What if Amy Rose is Maria Robotnik?

Okay, so Gerald Robotnik is alive in this movie, right? And he's defiantly just as bonkers a Eggman, right? So hear me out: Gerald knows how to make anthropomorphic hedgehogs because he made Shadow. His entire motive for making Shadow in the first place was to keep Maria alive, which obviously didn't end up happening and that's what drove him nuts. So instead of trying to cure Maria of her decease, what if he used Maria's DNA and whatever process he used to create Shadow, to clone Maria as a Hedgehog.

But something doesn't go quite right so Maria doesn't remember she's Maria, so she comes up with the name Amy Rose to refer to herself. (I'm sure there's some explination for why she went with that involving flowers and shit) and Gerald is trying to get her to act more like Maria but it doesn't work and there's a lot of weird tension between the two that comes up when Eggman starts dealing with them.

And part of the cloning process not working the way Gerald wanted, she doesn't have all of Shadow's powers. She's fast enough to keep pace with Sonic and Shadow, but she doesn't have any Chaos powers or Shadow immortality.

And part of the Gerald and Shadow's plan isn't just revenge for what happened to the original Maria, but also doing something that will make Amy more like Maria. Possibly making her fully human again somehow.

but Amy, being her own person, sides with Sonic in stopping Gerald, and we can still have the scene in the Arc where Amy gets Shadow to help the good guys, just like in the game.

I obviously have no idea if this is actually going to happen, in fact it's more than likely not going to happen anything like this. But I couldn't help but think about this after seeing Gerald alive and teaming up with Eggman. I can just kinda imagine a little pink hedgehog walking into the scene after they hug and that just being a whole thing.

Watching movie Gerald was like watching a corpse get dragged around but the way they erased Maria’s character and agency genuinely made me so mad. Ik the big thing is that she dies but like?? Her wish?? Her choices?? Erased.

I see a lot of people defending the movies portrayal of the military by saying that it did make them look bad but. No it didn’t?? I think American standards for what counts as criticism of the us military are abysmal which makes sense but like. Ugh.

That one dude telling them not to shoot children gave off “see, there are nice guys with morals in the military! They’re not all evil!” Like no balls. This movie has no balls. Goodnight and good luck with your video essay I will be watching it.

LITERALLY i keep seeing people go “NOOOOOOOOO they did keep the anti military themeeeeeeee look they were trying to kill maria they even said ‘i have my orders’ and they wanted to shoot her” THEN WHY DIDNT THEY JUST HAVE THEM SHOOT HER? WHY DIDNT THEY JUST DO THAT? WHY DID THEY LET THE COMMANDER GO “🥺 no don’t” and try to stop them?!?? or if they don’t want to have them shoot her have them miss and blow up instead of having the commander stop them. it’s the same damn issue with Tom himself it’s very much a “oh there’s only a few bad apples but the whole barrel isn’t spoiled <3” like come on

Gerald was awful but i came into this movie knowing that was going to bad as soon as they showed him alive and well. but Maria was done so terribly dirty. they erased all of her agency!!!! she CHOSE to try to help shadow escape, chose to have her last moments be sending him to earth, and chose to make that last promise to him, that even though he’s seeing the word of humanity right now, to never give up. it was so STUPID to get rid of her wish it gave shadow such little motivation and even less motivation to turn back from villainy. ugh.

People are talking about details from the two episodes of dark beginnings we’ve gotten so far and they’re important details… but nobody (that I’ve seen) talks about the fact that Roger Craig Smith has been credited in every episode (so far)

But yes, these episodes have been very good although the whole cg disguised as 2d still feels weird to me but I get it. The amount of robots and action they’ve had to animate would have been hell to keep proportionate without the 3D assets. As someone that kinda hates drawing Omega, I don’t blame them for modeling him in a computer and then slapping a visual effect on him.

Speaking of Omega, he was fun! Watched the episode twice and both times he got a smile out of me with his “inferior models” and “I call dibs!”

Still not sold on Rouge’s voice (4kids Rouge, I miss you) but it was definitely better here and more suited for her dialogue. And I loved seeing her fight like a badass. Like yassss queen, kick that robot. Sega needs to remember their female characters more often and portray them as the badasses they are (I also need to remember that but anyway).

Shadow needs to stop with the self-loathing. Like seriously. Maybe this is why he doesn’t get along so well with Sonic in canon. Sonic has never spent more than two seconds hating himself while Shadow has spent his whole lifetime doing it (or at least his waking hours, which isn’t as long as he’s been alive).

Speaking of Shadow’s waking hours, why did he have memories of Gerald in his cell getting executed? Hmm?

Anyway, that’s all I can remember right now and I’m at work so shouldn’t really be typing up essays about fictional creatures lol
