#knitting#no it's not a real pattern but I can't write one that makes sense because I have no freaking clue what any of that means#How do you make things that aren't basic rectangles#Why has every knitter I've asked for help just said 'patterns are easy; you just have to know how to read them' & then refused to teach me#Where do I even find a goat to sacrifice#How do I join the pattern cult#I am so confused#I've been knitting for almost a decade but I can only make scarves and potholders#I learned one (1) stitch by watching a YouTube video and none of my friends or family knit so I have no IRL resources#And nobody I meet seems to want to take the time to explain the rest to me#I taught myself to sew through trial and error but that doesn't really work with knitting because error is pretty much just... Unraveling?#Anyway sorry for the tag rant I'm just frustrated that I see pretty things I want to make but the instructions are in an alien language#And the gap between 'absolute novice' and 'intermediate' seems to be about 20 years of experience and formal instruction

the biggest difference between crochet and knitting is the communities' attitudes towards patterns. Crocheters are happy to provide you with a free pattern + an in-depth step-by-step youtube tutorial, while in the knitting-world you have to pay for the pattern most of the time. Why is that?
#why are there like no knit xyz pattern with me! videos on youtube?#I'm not saying don't earn money with your craft#not at all#but it is interesting as someone who started with crochet and got kind of spoiled like that lol#personal#knitting#crochet#fiber crafts

Stanley and Sixer!
Sent to Gravity Falls to live with a great aunt they barely know with no warning, the twins have… slightly different reactions. Stanley is not at all impressed with the idea of kicking it around some backwater town for a summer when they could've been working on the Stan o' War. Stanford is also put-out, but is optimistic about finding fun in documenting interesting things in the woods. Their attitudes pick up even more when they discover a spellbook lost in the woods that teaches them that Gravity Falls is full of weirdness and adventure. They both want to discover the two Authors of the spellbook, though each has a secret favorite author they want to meet in particular.
Stanley: With his brash yet suspicious personality, he finds his fun in looking for monsters in the woods with the hopes of beating them up and making a name for himself--a stance the creatures of Gravity Falls don't appreciate much. He feels a growing distance between himself and Stanford and has no idea what to do with it or how to talk to his twin about it, so he masks it with bravado and charm. He constantly thinks of ways to make himself important and interesting, which often blow up in his face. Thinks he's cooler than he really is.
Stanford, aka Sixer: Once he realized that Gravity Falls is a town full of weirdness, Stanford was thrilled by the thought that it might be a blessing in disguise, a place to finally branch out and make friends who won't run once they see his hands. He really, really wants to make friends with anomalies, like one of the sirens that supposedly live in the lake or the boy who claims to be a psychic. This goal combined with his trusting nature might lead him down dangerous paths. At least he has Stanley to help him! Though lately it feels like Stanley has been less honest and more clingy than usual, and it's starting to grate on him...
While Dipper and Ford are paralleled in the show, I feel like Ford as a child would have an attitude that parallels Canon Mabel's better in terms of inciting the plot. They're both enthusiastic to the point of being Too Much, intense, and often convinced they're right above what others think, and I just feel like him having a quest to find friends takes the place of Mabel's quest for a boyfriend very well. Meanwhile this Stanley has the skeptical but investigative attitude of Canon Dipper, and I could see him being the type to want to prove himself a la Dipper vs Manliness, provoking people he really shouldn't provoke in the name of showing who he can be.
#gravity falls#relativity falls#stan pines#ford pines#my art#drawing kid stan with glasses feels weird as hell#he stops trying to break them after they find the spellbook because for once in his life theres a book he wants to read#mostly to find spells to mess with people. but hey. if it works it works#obviously they arent perfect counterpoints to canon dip and mabel#but i feel like going off their personalities it makes sense#but ford would still be haring off to find monsters and prove theyre real#and stan would have some romantic adventures and have fun with his art and woodcraft#its not visible bc i didnt color this but ford's hand patch is shiny and golden and stan's fish is made of gold knit too :)#instead of the 'growing older/staying youthful' dichotomy that affects dipper and mabel's relationship stan and ford deal with connections#mainly centered around how having bonds with others doesnt diminish their bond with each other and how branching out is okay#as long as you remember not to discard the past in favor of the uncertain future. and you remember to communicate that.#aka ford: i want new friends! stan: WHY ARE YOU LEAVING ME BEHIND FOREVER LIKE DIRT ON YOUR SHOE :((((#ford: what. huh. that's not--i'm sorry??#ive got one other swap concept for a relativity au then im fresh outta juice#ok rambling over

the scarf is coming along and soon I'll have to get used to wearing *gasp* actual colors that aren't black or grey or so dark they could be mistaken for black when it's dark out
#still not sure abt the colors#I kinda took whatever yarns felt comfy&homey to me#which might be why it matches my apartment decor a bit too much lmao going out dressed like my apartment sure okay that works#it's also giving ''scarecrow'' to me for some reason (tho.. I could be madder abt it like scarecrow could be a look)#anyways the joy of doing things urself is that u can choose whatever colors and just sorta see how it goes#like idk if it's colorblind combo but I think I'm definitely gonna be wearing it#(my main point wasn't to make something actually super good and great; just to have something to do and practice my knitting which like#I made a hat like 9 years ago and have barely done anything since (aside from like 4 random squares when I once thought I'd knit a blanket#but like dude?? a blanket as the second thing u've ever knitted?? that was too ambitious. So hence a scarf; a small blanket))#aesthetic#I truly dont know any arts&crafts tags#studyblr#booklr#bookblr#december 2024#2024

I go to a crafting faire. I see a stand with knitwork. I approach. To prove I am not like the other plebians, I flip it over.
I compliment the floats. I ask if they blocked it.
The woman is suitably impressed. She sees I am like her. We talk about the wool blend for a couple of minutes, and I buy nothing.
#i have received a good grade in craft faire knitting#something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve#i win the social interaction#but also i'm sorry bulky weight hats?#not a fan#I get why it's the only way to churn out thirty hats before Christmas#with a reasonable budget#knitblr#knitting#crochet#craft fair#fiber crats#yarn#i touch all the yarns#yarnblr

If somebody in your life offers to knit or crochet or, really, create anything for you, please be an active participant in the creation of the piece they are making. I adore making and gifting things, but nothing bums me out quicker than a person who passively just goes "okay," to my ideas about what I'm making them - it can send the message that they won't like it, or that they don't care, even if they're happy about my offering. The back-and-forth feedback is a great way to make sure that you are being gifted something that was truly worth the time, effort, expertise, and money that will inevitably go into the gift!
I know it's really hard to be an active participant, believe me, I'm an anxious ball of horror, but it will only do good for both parties to interact in this situation. It is a big deal to be offered a hand-crafted gift, but it's also something we want you to love and use, and that can only happen if you tell us what would make you fall in love with what we create.
#advice#relationships#art#fiber art#knitting#crochet#i always try to remember that some people's responses to something big is to clam up and become more passive...#..i just want to remind you that you aren't in danger of Ruining Everything by suggesting things or asking questions or saying what YOU wan#like i asked my dad specifically how he would feel if i made him items SPECIFICALLY so i could gauge if he would like them for instance#i don't just want to create something i want the recipient to actually LIKE it#which is why i typically (not always) ask how somebody would feel about me giving them a specific gift#i know some people genuinely don't care in the sense that they would appreciate ANYTHING but sometimes that doesn't always translate i gues#im crocheting a set of coasters for my dad and i really hope hell truly like them because i'm not sure based on how he responded to my ideas#it makes me so happy to gift things but it's with the caveat that the recipient will think it is An Amazing Gift That Is SO Good And Useful

A nominally useful but mostly just-for-fun little project, using wool from the Shetland Islands kindly brought back for me by a family friend this summer. The pattern is Beeswax Mitts by Amy van de Laar on Ravelry.
#i really liked this pattern; it was largely intuitive after you got the hang of it and i appreciated her trick for crossing the#single-stitch cables#i think the only thing i changed was the number of stitches picked up for the thumb because why oh why do pattern designers insist on#telling you to pick up a tiny number of stitches that is sure to result in holes#when instead they could. not do that.#knitting#unblocked but i'm not sure i will; it would even out the ribbing a bit but the design came out neatly and i'll just be wearing them around

Knitting fairisle is a completely different hobby to knitting lace which is a completely different hobby to intarsia, to cables, etc. etc.
#my last few knitting projects have been a world of pain#and now I'm knitting a proper fairisle in the round with steeks and it's going so quickly it's knitting like an absolute dream#my last major fairisle project was over 2 years ago and I don't know why I've left it so long#knitting

i swear time doesn't apply to knitting because like. what do you mean the back of my sweater took a week to knit and now the identical front piece is done in less than 48 hours? the majority of which I didn't spend knitting?

First attempt at a cotton dishcloth on my frame loom

I am a fan of the chevron twill so far...we'll see how it turns out!
#Do i already have too many weaving and knitting projects going? Yes#Is this beyond the normal scope/usage of a frame loom? Probably also yes#But what's “reasonable” has not stopped me in the past#Why should it start now lol 🙃#weaving#Frame loom#dishcloth#Twill weave#Fiber arts#I think my partner isn't even phased anymore#Just accepted that I'm fully insane lol

Apparently you can't just oil bamboo needles, you also have to wax them. Whoopsieeee
This poor needle set, I think I got it in 2018, 2019? she's so Dry. Begging for a layer of delicious paraffin
(mister google says aluminum needles can be waxed too? i mostly use my steel ones because they Never have the dragging issues my aluminum ones get, but they're so heavy.... going to
#note: mister google said to use beeswax or a more typical wood working wax. there's even special knitting needle waxes#however i had paraffin on hand and none of the others so i'm using it <3 it lives in my fridge rent free and i do not know why

thinking about how I had a few folks at my last market suggest to me (kindly and with good intentions) that I make and sell some versions of the hand knit cardigan I was wearing because people would "totally pay $300 for that!"
I appreciated the sentiment, but people don't understand what goes into handmade clothes! I don't use a knitting machine. Every stitch in that garment is created by hand on needles, and the sleeves were brioche. Even using inexpensive acrylic yarn for the whole project, and accounting for the HUGE sleeve stitches (saving me time making the sleeves)—the material cost was $55 and the labor was well beyond that.
Let's conservatively estimate the cardigan took me 30 hours to create. Currently, when pressed to put a dollar amount to my time, I use the living wage as a baseline and then go up from there $1/hour for every year I have been actively practicing that particular skill. In the case of knitting that would be 11 years, and the current living wage in my area is approximately $23/hour. Setting aside the fact that this is calculated based on a 40 hour work week and I don't believe that is ethical or sustainable, we'll just leave it at $34/hour. That would make labor alone $1,020.
This brings the "production cost" to $1,075.
Items are not sold at production cost because that would leave your profit margin at 0%. This is not sustainable because it costs money to run a business (think things like paying for computer repairs, buying tools, the tablecloth you use at markets, paying for a website, etc.). Realistically to cover business costs and still come out with a 7% "net" profit margin, which is just a number pulled from averages in the clothing retail business...
... I'd have to sell that cardigan for $1,350.
So yeah! Something to think about when you see the price of clothes that are handmade. :o)
#and this is for something made with PLASTIC yarn!! not cotton! not wool! not really ethical even though it's technically#slow fashion#this is why garments were originally intended to last a LIFETIME or even generations!!!!#they are not cheap! clothes should proportionately be one of the singularly most expensive things we own btw!!#thank you for coming to my talk#I will be ranting again about this in the future I'm sure#handmade fashion#small business#fast fashion#shop small#etsy seller#knitting#fiber art#handmade life#fashion#indie fashion#style#strawberrum chirps

Race likes knitting sweaters but hates knitting sleeves so Spot's wardrobe ends up being like 50% hand-knitted tank tops
#isabel.tex#sprace#newsies#uksies#<- I'm specifically thinking of uksies sprace here. i think uksies spot would wear the heck out of a knitted tank top#racetrack higgins#newsies headcanons#anyway I'm having awful writer's block#so I'm working on the modern sprace one-shot that's been kicking around my head for literal months instead#race is fully aware of the sweater curse#but spot appreciates the effort it takes + is sufficiently involved in the process so they're safe from the curse#i think I've discussed this headcanon with Alex before but I'm sharing it with the world now#also sleeves suck to knit and this is why i have not finished my >year old sweater wip

[ID: A black and white head shot of Geto Suguru as a clown with a large ruffle and black dots on his nose, lip corners, and eye brows. Gojo Satoru's head shot is on the right and he's a colorful clown with a white polka dot shirt, blue scarf collar, white heart face paint, and four blue dots on his face above and below his eyes. They're both smiling at each other. /End ID]
More thoughts about JJK clown/circus AU
Geto and Gojo are clowns with the above aesthetics and also the face of the circus
Kenjaku stole Geto's clown make up look (punishable by death in my heart)
Tenden is the ring leader and their underground town thing is restyled to be a circus inside of a giant three ring tent
Toji is a sword swallower and strong man
Sukuna is a knife thrower and fire breather
Uraume is a tiger tamer (it just works for some reason)
Nobara is a juggler
Megumi is also an animal trainer (but obviously he's more ethical than real circuses)
Yuuji and Maki are acrobats
Shoko is still a doctor
Inumaki is also a clown but the silent asshole clown
My soul tells me that Yuuta downs balloon animals I don't know why
Panda
