How did Du Drow’s personality and behavior change after turning away from Bhaal and losing his urges?

Very minimally, really. His personality changes most dramatically throughout the course of the campaign, but it's gradual enough a process that it shouldn't feel that way, at least.

Barring the standoffish-ness that he starts with (which I think is an understandable reaction to losing all of your memories and suddenly being in a life-or-death situation with a bunch of strangers) DU drow starts off as a person who isn't interested in anyone's well-being but his own, nor is he invested in anybody's story or their outcome. Everything he does is in the interest of his own survival or personal, subjective ethics (saving Arabella because she's an individual child in distress- not saving the tieflings in act 2 because they've served their purpose and he doesn't care for them as a group). He's charming, and even polite, but he makes it very transparent that he doesn't care for the happiness or comfort of others.

By act 2, he finds himself with people to care about and whose goals he's invested in - he kills Yurgir so Astarion can get his answer from Raphael even though he thinks it's an objectively dumb idea. He helps Shadowheart fullfil Shar's trials despite the fact that her religion seems like absolute nonsense to him - he wants to make these people happy when there is nothing in it for him., and that's absolutely novel. He's also a slightly warmer person by then who is friendly to, like, half of the party.

By act 3, he's been inspired by Shadowheart's rebellion and is kind of mirroring that in his own way. He enjoys occasionally helping refugees in the outskirts of the city if for no other reason than to go against the grain - he develops a bit of a "fuck the rich" and a Stick It To The Man attitude that I think is inherit to the man that he is, and harkens back to his forgotten days of living-rough as a youth; when he would only enter cities to thieve or collect supplies and looked at the more privilege sects of society as weak and pompous. He lets Yenna into camp after she shows up because dude just loves an urchin, he tries to free the prisoners from the Iron throne and then help out the slaves at the Steel Watch Foundry, he gets Minsc back to afford Jaheira some peace of mind and doesn't hesitate to refuse his father's gift.

Besides Shadowheart's and Astarion's stories, I think learning that the bloodlust he thrived in was imposed upon him rather than organically acquired was what most sent DU drow into an identity crisis. The idea of doing things against his will unbeknownst to himself, or of being a pawn in an authority figure's game, is something that brought him equal amounts of shame and anger. It also triggers him to want to get in touch with the less violent side of himself - since, supposedly, that was actually all him - and leads him to want to do the best by all of his party members (to mixed results, considering Karlach's and Gale's fates) and establish the depth of his existing relationships.

...Ironically, I think being killed by Bhaal and then resurrected by Withers led him to slightly stray off that path of improvement. I mean, the TRUE evil's been banished! Now he can stop feeling guilt and shame and worry and just live his life COMPLETELY free from critical thought! Literally the first thing that he does upon waking up is declare that he's cured, and then announce that he's a blank slate - he isn't, and we all know that.

DU drow then proceeds to be confused as to why he still enjoys murder and mayhem for like 2 months, until Shadowheart and Astarion gently knock some sense into him (not by dissuading him from enjoying murder and mayhem - but recognizing that that's a part of him that wouldn't go away at the simple snap of a bony finger, and an urge that he has full control over.) Naturally, what Wither's did also did his invincibility complex no favors.

So... He really is kind of the same. He is slightly more in-touch with his own empathy and open to the pleasures of life, but his base personality has remained pretty intact - I would say he turns out to be what that young, lanky forest cryptid would have been all along, had Bhaal never entered the mix.

“I always did it to spend a little time with her.” He says, selecting another daisy, weaving it into his design.  “She was always so busy with the farm and corralling my brothers that there wasn’t much time for me. This was just something that we could do together, that was just for the two of us.”

He ties the two ends of the crown together, holding up his handiwork for you admire as you shift into a sitting position.

“Can I?” He asks you almost shyly, gesturing towards your hair and you nod enthusiastically before he places it gently upon your head. “Just like a summer bride back home in Nebraska.”

He takes his phone out and snaps a picture, tilting the screen to show you and you can’t help but smile. You look like a Disney princess, the blue and white petals a dazzling hue against your ebony locks.

 “You should send the picture to your mom.” You tell him, settling back into his lap.

His smile fades just a little, the ghost of his sadness lingering on his features as he picks another cornflower, using it to trail along the length of your nose.

“We’re not really talking much at the moment.” He reveals, twirling the flower back and forth between his fingertips. “She’s still heartbroken that I decided not to become a pastor after I completed the theology degree. She thought I’d settle down with the church, meet a god fearing woman, have a family by now.” He shrugs his shoulders with a sigh. “We haven’t spoken since I went home for Christmas, I don’t really know what to say to bridge the gap between us.”

“She may not either.” You say softly. “Sometimes you’ve gotta be the one to break the stalemate, to let her know you’re still thinking about her even though you’re a thousand miles apart.”

It occurs to Dennis that the distance may also be part of the problem. The people in his hometown, they live their whole lives there and his mother had clearly expected him to do the same. The fact he’s out in the world, experiencing it must terrify her because it creates the very real possibility that he may not be coming back.

Something that’s looking more and more likely the closer he gets to choosing his residency.

The intention has always been to match with an Internal Medicine Residency in Nebraska, somewhere closer to home so he could be near his family and serve his community. Now that plan is changing because he’s fallen in love not only with you but also with Emergency Medicine.

There are only 12 open spots back home in Nebraska for that speciality, in Pennsylvania there are 222.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out where his future lies.

The problem is, it’s going to break his mother’s heart, which is why he hasn’t reached out. He knows she’ll try to convince him to switch his speciality and he’s not ready for that fight just yet.  

It’s later that night that his phone rings. Spy x Family Ch. 108: Fear

Don't get me wrong, that panel with Twilight remembering his friends was beautiful. I think he feels nostalgic for that connection with other people. However, I think what really caught my attention in this chapter was Melinda.

Come on, look at this:

A long time ago, when we just met Melinda, I wrote this theory about her being afraid of her husband. Today, it was finally confirmed.

I feel so sad for her. Melinda has probably been carrying this alone for a long time. I doubt she's shared her fears with any friends or family members because, who would believe the illustrious political leader could be an abusive man? This is especially true if there's no actual physical violence in the relationship. However, like I said before, violence is more than that.

Something tells me that the violence in their relationship is mostly psychological. Donovan Desmond uses his authority to tell Melinda what to do, to create fear, to keep her away from their children.

Melinda appears as such a composed woman who has her life together in front of others, and only someone as emotionally perceptive and caring as Yor would notice something is wrong. There's a shame component in abusive relationships: "How did this happen to me? I used to be so strong and brave," combined with disbelief: "Am I overreacting? Is he really that bad? Why am I afraid of him if he hasn't really done anything to me?"

Hopefully, in time, Melinda will realize that fear is not only her responsibility; even if her husband wasn't physically abusive, his behavior caused her fear.

Without a doubt is a complicated issue, which brings me to something that will probably complicate things even more:

Yup, Twilight.

I'll admit that this is the first time that I felt very uncomfortable with what Twilight is about to do, but that's exactly the point. Good fiction/literature is suppose to move something within us, even if at times, it makes us feel uncomfortable.

You probably imagine why: Melinda is a person in dire need of therapy. She deserves (and needs!) a true professional and instead, she getting someone who is only trying to gather information.

HOWEVER...

Time and again, Twilight has shown that despite his line of work, he'll always try to do the right thing and the least amount of harm. So, I'm hoping he will apply that in this specific situation. My guess is that it will start as a way to get information (his classic "for the mission") but then, as Melinda opens up, he will actually give her good advice and hopefully empower her, as a real therapist would do!

Something else to keep in mind is that Melinda story of domestic violence could trigger Twilight himself in some way, given his own family history. We will have to wait to see how that goes.

Bonus

A final note on Melinda's beliefs in occultism: it makes sense.

I won't comment too much on the specific meaning of the cards because my knowledge is limited and I'm skeptical about that. But I will say that it makes sense that someone with so much fear and uncertainty in her life would believe in something that would bring her reassurance that everything will be okay or try to know the future in order to protect herself. (I really want to give Melinda a hug.)

Dear Mouthwashing fandom, explain to me, why next to the incredible fan art, I find a fuck ton of shipping content, especially between characters where this is highly problematic? SPOILERS FOR MOUTHWASHING AHEAD CN for talk about sexual abuse, death, suicide & violence

DISCLAIMER: I do not shame the general practice of shipping at all. I am a shipper myself and I think it makes up for a lot of interesting dynamics and narratives outside the canon. Shipping is an important pillar of fandom communities and I am unable to forbid you to do it. HOWEVER, in the case of Mouthwashing I want to talk about what, in my opinion, feels tone-deaf to the themes and the canon of the game. But let me start with a short summary of the game before I get into it.

Mouthwashing is basically a visual novel that takes place on the Tulpar, the last manned cargo ship of the company Pony Express. The crew, consisting of Caption Curly, Co-Captain Jimmy, Nurse Anya, Mechanic Swansea and his intern Daisuke, is confronted with a crash against an asteroid and the consequences following it. The story is told out of order to reveal the truth bit by bit. What caused the crash, what happened and how the crew deals with the time afterward being stuck on the ship. Revealing sexual abuse, tragic backstories, the horrible side effects of late state capitalism and the neglect of people in command towards the people they are responsible for.

To boil it down we have two men who, out of societal misogyny, hurt the only woman on their crew by assaulting her or not acting as they should have in their position of responsibility. All of this would not have happened if Jimmy didn't rape Anya and impregnate her, and if Curly had disciplined Jimmy in a capacity possible on the ship and in Jimmy's position as co-pilot. To be honest, with the amount of automatization the ship has, I don't think they need Jimmy if it is not a case of emergency, but I digress. Jimmy is the perpetrator of the story, but Curly is an accomplice in putting his aim of finding a solution and compromise over punishing his subordinate as he should have.

And now to my actual point: I am a big fan of the game, the narration style and the utter tragedy of 5 people losing their lives in the isolation of space, with their company not giving a shit about them. Otherwise, they might have been rescued much earlier or at all. Or had enough cryo pots in the first place. Or a nurse with experience. Or any amount of better equipment and not the most cheap shit that somehow made it through a resemblance of regulations. There are probably no regulations.

Being a fan I, of course, looked into the hashtags on several social media sites, and between the incredible art and analysis of the game, I quickly found shipping content, and I have no idea why. I have literally no idea how that narrative speaks to you in a way of shipping characters romantically/sexually. Especially three shippings really rub me the wrong way.

ANYA/JIMMY

Are you fucking kidding me? Literally, what is wrong with you shipping a victim with their abuser? There was not one interaction between them, that suggest that there was consent or affection, that Jimmy has any sympathy for Anya. He knows what is going on, he knows that Anya is pregnant and takes no responsibility. Even worse, his idea of FIXING this was to kill everyone, at least himself, to avoid responsibility! Same goes for AUs where she kept the baby and is somehow okay and happy? I get the urge to fix it, but that is not a good fix. There is no good fix if you are pregnant due to rape.

ANYA/CURLY

A lot of argument I hear for that is that "at least Curly is her friend and was nice to her" and if that is your whole foundation of argument, I want to ask what your standards for a relationship are. Please know that you deserve more than the bare minimum. Another question in that context: Is Curly really Anya's friend? His friend was abused and instead of protecting her, he tried to reason and help her abuser! That is not the behavior of a friend! There is no "but Jimmy is his friend too!". If your friend is an abuser and that does not make you stop being their friend....why?

JIMMY/CURLY

It feels like it is a law on the internet, that two men who look at least averagely handsome will be shipped, especially if they have the tiniest of connection to each other. I am not even sure if I would call them friends in the first place. It appears that Jimmy, whatever his bad life before that job was (thanks to the developers for not giving us a backstory), he is still absolutely unsatisfied with that he has. He is jealous of Curly and his position, seeing how quickly he takes on the Captain title after the crash and only realizes far too late how hard the position actually is. Curly on the other hand feels a bit like a people pleaser to me. He probably had pity for Jimmy, took him under his wing to help him? Fix him? Whatever it is, it made him ignore Jimmy's bad side to a fatal degree. I respect the toxic yaoi but are you sure?

TLDR; I am worried about how the practice of shipping developed, from a way to extend the canon, explore queerness in cis/straight dominated media, into a compulsion of where some people can't look at any form of media or constellation of characters without immediately smashing them together like dolls. If you do this, maybe step back for a minute and ask yourself if it is appropriate. On that note, same goes in case you defend Jimmy. Why?

Let’s get into it :p

1. Fav characters (teen/adult timeline)

For the teen timeline, I’ve said it before: it’s Lottie. Always my perfect angel, my complex girl with a tiny disorder, my cutesy axe murderer. On a serious note, I love her character on so many levels, and Courtney is so incredibly talented. My love for her only grew in S3—oh dear…

Also, a close favorite is definitely Mari (what a shame).

Now for the adult timeline… that’s a little tricky. My gut instinct is to go with Misty, because let’s be real, she’s carrying the story, both with her comedy and her genius. My girl is singlehandedly moving the plot forward … Her development is amazing to watch 2.

However, I really really enjoyed adult Taissa in season 1, back when she still had the politician/divorce era going on. And I could never forget Van. She adds so much to the adult timeline. I think making her a survivor is one of the best things the writers ever did tbh. While I do have some criticisms about her storyline, I’m actually in love with Lauren, so I won’t say any more.

2. Opinion on Shauna

I meaaaan. Oh man. I really can’t defend her anymore… but I still love her. Could never hate her. At this point she could kill all the girls in cold blood and I’d be like…. Remember when she literally looked at us and asked why we couldn’t hear her baby cry? Yeah, that’ll do it for me every time.

She’s traumatized, probably deep in PPD that maybe never left. She really gets on my nerves in the adult timeline specifically, but hey. Could never forget what happened to her. She’s also super interesting from a character standpoint!

3. LottieNat vs MistyNat vs TravNat

Oh Natalie, my lovable, shippable baby.

I’ll be quick with this:

LottieNat – Surprisingly, I’m not really into it. Maybe in the adult timeline, but meh. (sorry majority of the fandom)

MistyNat – Good, good soup. Adult timeline, season 1, really confirmed this for me. So much potential.

TravNat – Yes. Their relationship makes me cry. Teen timeline has so much angst for them, which I eat up. They truly deserve each other.

4. Transfem/nb Travis

“The shrooms made him gay” I’m crying.

I mean, hey.. everyone can headcanon what they want. I don’t really see it, simply because I think his masculinity was such a big part of his plotline.

However, he is a pretty princess, so please go ahead.

5. Storyline/plot point I wish was explored more

Pff, sadly there are a lot, and S3 just made it worse. But I’m gonna go with my favorite and I think the fandom agrees:

Taissa’s entire storyline.

I’ve been rewatching with my sister, and it hit me again how amazing her setup was in season 1. She was truly my favorite to watch. She had all these things going for her: the senator plot, sleepwalking, creepy sacrifices, divorce era, and Sammy. They really set it all up and then… well, they just made her revolve around Van.

I was happy to see she was still leaning into the “sacrifice for Van” thing in season 3, but mhhhhh Other Tai was handled so poorly. That scene where she talks to Other Tai? It was so corny when it could’ve been so interesting 😭

6. Favorite/least favorite death

Okay. Least favorite, this one’s widely agreed on, Lottie and Nat.

The adult timeline deaths were really, really weak. Both characters had so much more to offer, and it was a huge mistake to write off these insanely talented actresses.

Natalie’s death felt so meaningless. like, an accident?? A fucking overdose?? That’s actually sick.

And Lottie… it felt like they only killed her off so the other adults had something to do. The reactions were lacking, and while Callie being her murderer was a good idea, the scene should’ve been way longer. At least Lottie seemed at peace in the end. My poor Angel.

Now maybe this contradicts everything I’ve ever said, but my favorite death as of late is Van’s. Not because I wanted her to die, obviously, but because the scene was so aesthetically perfect and just… ugh.. it fit.

Yes, Van would get stabbed and bleed out slowly on the floor after saving the love of her life and a friend, because she couldn’t kill Melissa while Radiohead plays.

Of course Van would survive the plane crash, fire, wolves, possibly cancer—and die because she’s too kind.

I’ve been meaning to talk about her plane scene too!! So much to analyze..

Why? That's...that's all I have to say. To everything. WHY. Anything you could possibly bring up about this series, I'd have a 'why???' for. I'm just...lost for words. I'm baffled that this has a 4.2 ⭐️ rating on GR.

I was really hoping this would be a redemption for the honestly kind of pedestrian second instalment, but no, it was more repetitive. Recycled tropes, recycled sayings and flowery prose, no character growth and surprise plot twists that were not only not a surprise, but also pointless.

This book is like, 300 pages longer than it should be, for the amount of plot that actually happened. I cannot tell you how over the prose I was by the end. I mean...

I can feel the exact moment my heart shatters. It’s when I turn, my eyes crashing into ones well memorized. When mist meets the deepest sea. When a Shadow faces its Flame. When inevitability meets its end. When I stare into the face of what it is I love most.

That's...so much.

And for recycled tropes and plot—why do the trials thing again? There were so many other directions you could have taken this with politics in the Kingdom, liaising with other kingdoms, or even just the two of them on the run, but no, we're going to just...repeat the first book again, ok.

The love triangle vibes? Why? Just...tell the dude, like I'm genuinely not sure why they're "keeping their relationship a secret" at this point and I say that in quotes because they never do a very good job of it. I just don't see the point 💀

Powerless at least had some interesting side characters. We don't really see much of any of them here, which is a shame. Jax, Andy, Lenny, Blair, Mak—they all show up super briefly then disappear again leaving you wondering why they were included in the first place 😞

More broadly, the entire book hinges on the reader just believing there's no other way for any of the characters to move forward except this way, with no explanation to back up why things are this way.

For example: Paedyn must marry Kitt or be killed...why? Literally why? If they wanted to just be together as normal people they could have run off into the sunset.

Everyone hates Paedyn and can't wait to see her die a bloody death and she likes to remind us of that every 2.5 seconds. Why do they hate her? Because she has no powers, I guess. That's all. A whole population hates her and we're never going to explore any of that dynamic, just accept it and move on.

Why is everyone swooning over Kai? He's basically nobody, his entire personality is just...being in love with her. Like in book one you think ok, we just haven't gotten to know him well enough yet, but nope, we still don't really ever get a feel for him as a person in my opinion. He's just...a blank slate.

I suspected Calum to be the villain from the first moment he appeared in Powerless, but when it actually happened so much time had passed without his presence at all that it was completely underwhelming, I just didn't care at all? And he hates her for 'killing' her mother in childbirth? Honestly it just feels like everyone in this kingdom has a lot of Big Emotions they don't know how to deal with. It's like an entire world that's been gentle-parented.

MAK??? Mak supposedly blaming her for Adena getting killed as if Paedyn asked to be in the first trials in the first place? As if he wasn't just using Adena before he fell in love with her in two days or whatever? Like I'm sorry but none of that makes sense either.

And I mean, we're all supposed to be sad and crying over Kitt when he dies after it's revealed he was actually the bad guy all along, but like...the guy wanted to commit mass-murder? He wanted to kill half the world's population for literally no reason whatsoever and then take over everyone else's countries (all while being weirdly obsessed with his 'brother') and I'm supposed to be sad about him dying? Girl, please 😭

And they named their KID after him??? Stop, please, I'm begging 💀 Poor Adena was the nicest girl ever and didn't even get a look-in, but the genocidal maniac? Yeah, let's name the kid after him.

Finally, the incestuous plotline...WHY? Why do authors persist in doing this? It doesn't add to the story, there is literally no reason that you need to have characters who are related kissing. Ever. I got reverse-Mortal Instruments here and I'm thoroughly unimpressed? Like I get it, they didn't end up together but by god, you really wrote a three-book love-triangle (almost) situation here knowing they were related the whole time? FOR WHAT PURPOSE?????

And even more concerning is the not-literally-incestuous, but emotionally incestuous obsession Kitt had with Kai, even when he thought they were full-blooded brothers? Ew.

In conclusion,

realising the thing between fraser and meg starts quite early on really:

we hear her talked about in vault (episode 2) as basically a terrifying entity that everyone's scared of and punishes fraser by taking away his uniform. when he stands up to her at the end of the episode, she declares that he's fired. so very basically: it's clear she doesn't like him, doesn't want him around. it's never 100% clear why she doesn't to begin with, but there are some clues -- she mentions his spotty work record (although how much she knows about the details we'll have to imagine), she also later in the season is shown really struggling with sexual harassment from a male superior, and so it'd justified to see her a little in the same vein as the woman in the pilot episode who considers fraser something of an interloper, who neither deserves, nor belongs in, this position. added to that he could be potential trouble for meg's own career, which she's rightfully pretty careful about maintaining. also. she's a control freak. and fraser is not a very controllable man (or so she thinks...............)

in witness (episode 3) fraser's running menial errands (laundry -- callback to the pilot) in order to make her change her mind and also just because he would do that without complaint, but she's essentially put in to have him transferred... back to canada. he spends the episode thinking about it, and at the end turns it down. to which she smiles (to herself). so here already she sort of likes him and trusts him enough to be okay with him sticking around. potentially the firing was something of a test -- how much can i actually rely on you, because if you're just waiting to get away you're no good to me in this position. maybe she also kind of enjoys how seriously he takes picking up her laundry, that's not even a joke, their whole... ordering/taking orders dynamic is more than just work

in bird in the hand (episode 4) she's away and she's left fraser in charge... so that's also interesting. pretty quick turnaround from "in danger of transfer" to letting him run things. i bet reading the paperwork afterwards was an interesting experience

in the promise (episode 5) he goes above and beyond to get her broach back for her. ray is very unimpressed by his loyalty and points out that fraser would look for the good in anyone even if he had to manufacture it. dunno how much this was intended, but it doesn't not read as ray remembering victoria in a sort of "oh here we go again, you're trying to fix another woman who's treating you like shit." meg, meanwhile has mellowed somewhat more, still very "barking orders" to begin with but more just an average amount of annoyed that fraser will follow the letter of the law and not stop the car for two seconds to let her out! then, the personal upset about the broach makes her more aggressive (hey look, she's definitely got some wonderfully bitchy stuff to her, im not saying she's misunderstood here), and at the end they share quite a soft, quite a loaded moment after he's returned the broach to her by placing it on her desk, that ends on her promptly reasserting her boundaries ("don't ever come into my office without permission again. that's my first and last warning") which leaves him looking uh... idk what to call it. turned on? turned on. something like that. spaced out. he walks straight into a desk afterwards!

tomorrow i rewatch mask, which i know contains all her least-favourable moments (but i cannot remember if there are any that aren't that right now, we'll see), and then there are two episodes unfortunately that she's not in at all, and then the edge, when fraser essentially asks her out on a date and she becomes very flustered and honestly quite sweet about the idea

i do think it's kind of a shame that there's not a little bit of her in between mask and the edge, because that's where there's a bit of a leap in their relationship development that clearly happened offscreen but it's interesting that she seems to at least privately like him from all the way back at the end of witness when she smiles to herself about him staying on. not "loves" or anything like that, but likes something about him anyway

My 10 Underrated and Overlooked Disney Characters

Disney has within its enormous catalog, a memorable amount of lovable characters, because both their actions and their character arcs, made them win the sympathy and affection of the general public; however, just as there are beloved and remembered characters, there are also characters that, either for reasons of irrational hatred, or because their film failed with the public by not attracting attention, they tend to be overlooked and underestimated in such a way that it seems that, either they did not see the entire film, or they are so used to other characters with the same complex, that just by hearing their information, they immediately discard it; there are also cases of characters that although they are not hated, also tend to be forgotten, and thanks to this topic, I have been inspired to make another top of things related to Disney, and now I will present to you, from my humble personal opinion, those that for me, are underestimated or forgotten Disney characters, and that deserve more attention than being forgotten; Now, without further delay, let's begin with this new top

Number Ten: Snow White

Let's start this list with the princess who started it all: Snow White; now you might be wondering, why do you think Snow White is underrated if she's popular and everyone's talking about her? Easy answer, because you only remember the movie and the dwarves, and she's pretty overlooked, and I feel like she's hated a lot; yes, she's not like modern princesses, and her overly kind and naive personality can be annoying, but I personally don't dislike her. I love that she's kind to everyone; also, remember, she lived with a stepmother who wanted her dead just for her beauty and kindness, and if you look closely, she did escape from the castle; if she started cleaning the dwarves' cabin, it's not because of gender roles that say only women are fit for housework, but because she wanted to please them; besides, put yourself in the dwarves' shoes: they work from day to night, so it makes sense that they can't clean the house and leave it messy and dirty, because the work in the mine was too much for them, and if she offered to clean, it was to help them keep the house clean, in a way. So yes, Snow White may not be the strongest or bravest princess, but if she does anything, it's try to hide from her stepmother and help support herself when she gets to the cottage; she's ranked ten because, compared to the other characters, at least she has her fanbase

Number Nine: Faline

Faline, Bambi's childhood friend and later girlfriend, is a fawn who, while she doesn't have much characterization, I feel like no one cares for her; many only saw the first film and dismiss her as Bambi's girlfriend, but if you watch the second film (which is actually an interquel) Bambi 2, she demonstrates intelligence in knowing the evil intentions of Ronno, Bambi's rival deer, knowing that if she stayed with him, she wouldn't be happy; she also has the most adorable traits of her personality, gor example, when she first meets Bambi, she plays with him and even kisses him on the cheek playfully, and when they reunite as adults, it's also adorable to see her kiss him again, but in a romantic way; this is a detail that no one notices, since she's the one who initiates their relationship, believe it or not; nothing more to say, number nine for Faline the fawn

Number Eight: Mr. Smee

This issue may be somewhat controversial for some, but from my perspective, I feel that Mr. Smee from the film Peter Pan, is a character who isn't talked about much and tends to be overlooked, as I didn't find many people who claim Smee as their favorite comic sidekick, which I find a shame, since I find him not only comical thanks to his witty clumsiness, but also because his appearance and personality make him lovable; his appearance bears a certain resemblance to the dwarves in Snow White, and his character is that of a person who, although he works for a feared captain like Hook, ends up being a kind-hearted person due to his treatment of his captain; he also demonstrated sensitivity when it came to expressing his feelings, showing us that villains can also suffer and feel. Because of that small demonstration that sidekicks can have feelings too, Smee is a character who should be admired and respected, both for her personality and for her way of making viewers laugh

Number Seven: Cinderella

Another princess who I feel is quite underrated and misunderstood is Cinderella; upon closer inspection, she is someone who did something to try to escape her abusive family, always keeping a smile on her face and hoping that, one day, her wishes would come true; she also demonstrated, in private, that she could be sarcastic behind her abusers' backs, but unfortunately, it only gets played down to superficiality, and she's criticized for relying on a man and a fairy godmother to solve her problems, but that's not true, for starters, it's the mice who actually save Cinderella, the prince was just a bonus and doesn't do anything except wait for her, and secondly, saying that a victim of abuse should escape on their own, even knowing they'd fare worse, is blaming the victim; so no, Cinderella wasn't saved by the prince, she was saved by her animal friends, and she proved to have an important role in her own rescue; more respect for this girl, please

Number Six: Nala

As a huge Lion King fan, it makes me sad to know that Nala, Simba's love interest, is quite overlooked; both film critics and the Disney fandom tend to underestimate her as a character, labeling her as a useless person who supposedly did nothing except be Simba's girlfriend; i mean, if you really watched the movie more in depth, she's actually a very important character for the plot; put yourself in her shoes. You live in a kingdom ruled by a tyrant, so you have to go out and find food to survive; one day, you run into your childhood friend, whom you thought was dead a long time ago, by pure chance, you fall in love with him, and then, remembering your mission, you reproach your friend for everything that caused his absence, the kingdom is suffering the consequences for a reason, and you tell him to take your place as king, and in the end, you help him in the battle against the hyenas; if that isn't called helping, then tell me what is? Come on, not all characters have to be like Dory from Finding Nemo, in the sense that they deserve the same treatment as the male protagonist; while it's true that Nala plays a supporting role and doesn't appear much on screen, she's still a very helpful character for Simba, so don't tell me she's useless

Number Five: Ariel

Starting at number five, we have characters who are too hated and deserve more respect; here we have another Disney princess who I feel is hated, and that's Ariel from The Little Mermaid; not only is she criticized for abandoning her family for Eric, but she's also criticized for her tantrum-throwing, selfish, and ungrateful personality, for disobeying her father despite his warnings, and for ultimately learning nothing; yes, I'm aware that she did bad things throughout her journey, but first, not only was she already interested in the human world before seeing Eric, but she gave up her home because she didn't feel heard, that if she raised her voice, no one would listen to her, and her father's destruction of her belongings is what made her see Ursula; I have a theory that if Triton had started talking to his daughter and cleared things up, as well as letting her explore as much as she wanted, maybe she wouldn't have left home like that; I understand that he only wanted to protect her, but he did so at the cost of alienating her and not allowing her to express her opinions, hence her disobedience towards him; that little defense over, Ariel, while she made her mistakes, deserves more respect from the public, especially those who grew up in overprotective environments, with parents who, although they had good intentions to protect their sons or daughters, do so at the cost of limiting their freedom

Number Four: Kenai

Kenai, the main character of Brother Bear, is a rather hated protagonist, mainly for his arrogant and rude personality, and for constantly complaining about Koda, the bear cub, for talking too much; however, from my point of view, I don't dislike this man turned into a bear, yes, sometimes I disliked him at times, but in general I had a lot of respect and affection for him, since he learns not only not to judge bears by their monstrous appearances, but also to respect others and give them a special space, as happened with little Koda, where by understanding him more deeply, he saw him as a little brother who needed to protect, that's why in the end, he makes the decision to stay as a bear to take care of him, and in its sequel, Brother Bear 2, he is seen to have improved his character quite a bit, especially in his dealings with Koda and Nita, his later romantic interest; so Kenai deserves more respect and not so much hate.

Number Three: Mater

Cars is one of the Pixar franchises that I feel receives too much hate, whether for its story, merchandise, stereotypical characters, etc. However, of all this sea of ​​​​hate, the one that affected me the most was the one that was had for Mater the tow truck, and Pixar fans seem to have a great disgust for the character, always saying that he is an annoying sidekick, that his voice (provided by Larry The Cable Guy) is irritating, in addition to hating the voice actor just for that detail (which seems stupid to me because I don't understand the hate towards this man who is not to blame for his detractors being idiots) and that he is no good as a protagonist in the infamous Cars 2; here I come to come out and say that this poor male tow truck does not deserve so much hate; yes, sometimes his jokes do not cause that much laughter in an adult, but he is like that, funny and charismatic in his own way, and if it weren't for him, Lightning McQueen would never have changed his personality and would still be the same arrogant man from the beginning; besides, the fact that he is the protagonist in the second film didn't bother me either (yes, I liked that sequel, I know it's not perfect but please respect me) and besides, Pixar did the same with Dory and nobody said anything bad, as if she did work as the main character but not Mater; nothing more to add, he is a character who deserves to receive more affection and not so much contempt.

Number Two: All The Characters From Home on the Range

When Home on the Range first came out in theaters, everyone criticized its plot, and it's rated as the worst movie in the Disney industry, but from my point of view, this film doesn't deserve so much hate and to be forgotten, and I'm not just referring to its story and themes, but almost all of its characters are unfairly hated; the three main cows, Maggie, Grace and Mrs. Calloway, are some of the best written female characters, Buck the horse is likeable, Alameda Slim is an underrated villain, with a very danceable villain song of his, the The Willies are also forgotten, and the secondary characters like Lucky Jack, the rabbit with a peg leg, and Jeb, the grumpy male goat who doesn't like to share his cans, make me laugh like the first time I saw this animated film; so Home on the Range, both its characters and its story, deserve much more respect and affection, and not to be forgotten as one of the most hated and detested characters in cartoons

Number One: All The Characters From Chicken Little

And at number one is a character whose hatred and contempt I will never fully understand, both for him and for his film; yes, I'm talking about Chicken Little from the film of the same name; seriously, I'll never understand why this film received so many bad reviews at the time of its release, it's great from beginning to end, its story, although it has certain clichés like the alien invasion, also portrays a protagonist who seeks to be accepted in society and repair his relationship with his father, a father who although he did not do the right thing by ridiculing his son with the other inhabitants of the town, at least redeems himself and they love each other again as father and son, and the supporting characters like Abby Mallard, deserve more respect, especially her as a strong female character, when she helps Chicken Little solve his problems; it also has a soundtrack with famous classic pop songs, and in general, it's a film to laugh and entertain; nothing more to add, number one for Chicken Little, who does not deserve so much hate from critics and Disney fans

Thoughts on Yellowjackets Finale/response to common criticisms I’ve been seeing

1. Shauna character assassination

Throughout the show we’ve seen “the wilderness” take over nearly every character, causing them to act sociopathic and cruel, with the strength of its power depending on the resistance and empathy of the specific character. We see Nat consistently resist it, Misty pretty much never resists it because she’s more insecure and manipulative.

Shauna since the beginning has had the LEAST amount of empathy. She was obsessed with Jackie, and either in love with or jealous of her (or both). She was sleeping with her boyfriend and then came home 2 years later and MARRIED him. And from what we’ve seen, we’ve never seen Shauna actually love Jeff, at most she trusts him more than anyone, but thats it.

The first time she lets the wilderness take over, she sends Jackie outside the cabin where she freezes to death. Shauna has very little self reflection over this, as she pretends Jackie is still alive and talks to and plays with her corpse. With this exhibition of her character, it makes sense that in season 3 when they’re arguing over how to avoid or overcome the coming winter, Shauna is taken over by The Wilderness and becomes a cruel leader after Nat kills coach.

In the adult timeline, we see her let the Wilderness back in after the fake reported tries to talk to her, when she kills the bunny and eats it. She kills Adam out of fear when she believes he’s been manipulating her the whole time he’s known her, and premeditated all of their interactions. In season 3 she continues to spiral and shows vividly who she’s been the whole time, specifically when she takes a bite out of Melissa’s arm.

We know she isnt pure evil. She tries to protect Callie and Jeff (even though she lies to them and acts selfishly). She allowed Lotties dad to believe she was Lottie out of sympathy for his situation. Even in the teen timeline she couldve killed Melissa to scare the girls into obedience but she didnt. And this goes into my next point.

2. Why are the other Yellowjackets besties with Shauna instead of hating her?

Its been stated they don’t remember much of the wilderness, but what they do remember is that they ALL did horrible things. As the audience, we see how S3 Shauna is the most cruel, but think about it from one of the girls’ perspectives. They killed. They watched and encouraged murder. They ate their friends. They lied and tricked each other. They pitted people against others. Just like Shaunas monologue at the end, to an extent, the completely devolved into savagery in their worst moments.

And with that, they remember each other most from their high school relationships with each other. They still treat Nat like a loser druggie. They see misty as crazy and weird, and very overbearing. They see Tai as a strongwilled, if sometimes apathetic, logician. They see Van as the cool funny girl. And overall they see Shauna as someone who’s complex and stubborn, but reliable. Hell they even run into Melissa after being attacked by Shauna and still see her as the sad girl who was obsessed/in love with Shauna, even though we immediately see them all pity her after being abused by Shauna in the wilderness.

Their memories of the wilderness are so warped, and so intertwined with their own guilt and shame, that it makes sense that they would simplify each other down to the high school stereotypes they perceived each other as before they were stranded.

3. Mari being the girl in the pit and Shauna being the antler queen was predictable

I actually don’t have much to say about this. New fans might feel this way because they watched the whole show in one go. I watched S1 right before S2 aired, and then waited through the whole writers strike and pushback for S3, and honestly i thought the show would just get cancelled entirely. That ending felt more like a reward for the OG watchers because personally, I didnt care who would end up being who. I just wanted to see how the story would get to that phenomenal introduction to the show. The episode is called “Full Circle” because after 4 years we FINALLY got to see it, and I think the point wasn’t to shock anyone. We knew it was gonna happen. What makes it brilliant is how when we first see that in the Pilot episode, we’re given a clear image of how insane they become in the wilderness. In the finale, they kept it consistent with the pilot, but ADDED CONTEXT to what we know, shifting it into a plot to trick Shauna and get rescued.

4. My thoughts on the future of the show

I’ve watched too many shows that went on for too long, and watched the writing lose quality at an almost vertical slope. HBO shows, specifically, are known for this, but because they can’t ever produce a good final season, and almost ruin the whole show with their final episode. True Blood, GoT, Sopranos, etc. of course non HBO shows are guilty of this, like HIMYM and PLL. As far as I know, YJ isnt renewed for a 4th season, and I won’t be heartbroken if this is the last season. Of course theres a lot of unanswered questions, but I feel like we know enough of the story and the characters that the loose ends are essentially interpretive. I prefer this over a shitty final season that “wraps everything up” with the WORST ending imaginable. 3 seasons is a good length for a show, and this one has been enjoyable and exciting the whole time I’ve watched it. I’d rather it end with that leftover mystery, instead of the writers running it into the ground and ruining the show.

I really dont think they can even do a full fourth season atp. The wilderness timeline was the main hook for most fans, and now that the story is at the point where they get rescued, it wouldnt be the same. I think at most it could be 3-4 long episodes that wraps up the story, but thats it. If they wanted to continue the show, I think maybe a spin off that connects to the show could be interesting. Like maybe a prequel about another group of girls that got stranded in the same forest 10-20 years before the Yellowjackets, that kinda answers whether or not theirs a supernatural force or if it’s just psychosis.

Sorry for the length of this, but here I go…I just found your blog and your insight has been a delight to read, and it’s definitely helping me digest the emotional rollercoaster that is Chapter 426. But you’ve mentioned how Shouto could possibly experience setbacks, like being regulated to sidekick status or having to pay all his money towards reparations.

For the sake of my soul because I love Shoto, do you think it could be possible for him to not have to experience setbacks to such an extreme - like still getting to be a hero (maybe him being the one to save everyone from Dabi’s flames could alleviate some of the potential social stigma), and not having to pay as much for reparations if Enji handles the bulk of it (even if he isn’t a hero anymore, I can imagine he still has money now, and could make more based of royalties from sales of his hero merchandise or whatever)?

And also, what do you imagine is in store for Fuyumi and Rei’s future, could they at least change their last names like Natsuo and have a fresh start? Thank you! :)

Those comments came from the JPN fandom Twitter and I was quite shocked to see them too. I’ve been trying to read up on the Japanese criminal system and how a perpetrator’s family is treated and from what I gather “taking responsibility” is more a social pressure than a legally enforceable one.

The perpetrator’s family can still help obtain less severe sentence for the perpetrator by apologising, settling victim compensation with the victims’ families.

Public shaming is also really a thing - so I think the controversy will realistically follow Shouto.

As for him being able to be a pro hero - with Hawks (despite his villain father) becoming HPSC president, I’m actually not too worried about that. I can’t imagine Hawks signing off on anything that would amount to Shouto being punished for Dabi’s crimes considering he personally stopped him twice (and not to mention also fought him at Jakku to keep him from hurting anyone else).

If the ranking system stays, I think it would affect Shouto’s ranking (and with that his income) because public approval is part of the points and for sure there will be people questioning if he should be allowed to wield his quirk with the family history they have.

As for the compensation, yes, I think Endeavor could do this for sure and in any case it is his responsibility as head of the family. He needs to track down all of Dabi’s victims families and agree on compensation packages so they won’t go after Fuyumi, Natsuo and Shouto (especially Shouto who will be in the public eye).

With 30 victims and their entire families being compensated, plus the injuries Dabi caused, I imagine it will seriously reduce Enji’s wealth (which also means less to support Rei or Fuyumi with).

But once Shouto debuts as pro hero, I’m sure there will be still people going after him and trying to take advantage like it happens all the time with famous people. And even if it’s not a legal obligation, we’ve seen that Shouto never refused to take responsibility for the family’s crimes and immoral behaviour even though he was a literal child, blameless and a victim in this all.

Changing names in Japan is not so easy. It’s a question of belonging to family registries. So Natsuo, who is getting married can be put on the registry of his wife’s family (if they consent) and take their name.

Fuyumi - if she married - would also go on the family registry of her future husband. But unlike Natsuo, she was not in a relationship and now with the scars on her face and being from a disgraced family, I don’t know what her prospects are.

Rei has no option - her birth family sold her and never lifted a finger for her during the worst years of the abuse. Unfortunately, I don’t see this changing. So she’s stuck on Enji’s registry.

For Shouto it doesn’t matter. The entire country knows who he was born to and why. If he tries to change his name, it may be its own controversy.

and second it is actually a thing that amnesia patients have a lot harder time picturing a 'future' and it has a lot of connotations about memory and such so this is actually a really good line in light of that (im p sure theres been more research about it but i havent gotten that deep into it i just know the thing about the future)

okay one thing i will say. this whole thing wouldnt really have been possible without jack? but like the reason they won was cause of jamie but also cause of jacks DIFFERENCES. he could do things the others couldnt BECAUSE he wasnt a guardian and it made him invaluable. and he proved that he was a guardian in his heart no matter what oaths he had taken because he loved fun and mischief and wanted to protect and care for the kids. because he learned to put them before himself. but then like. i kinda feel like the ending kinda undoes all of that? like it was very off-putting and dissatisfying for me when i was younger because i was like. they literally took away the thing that made him special and the Difference that made him able to help them the most and Do The Things they needed; that they couldnt. so they kind of built up this whole 'you can work and do good even outside of the recognized and structured 'right way' and then it was just like but actually hes a part of the same system now haha' and just sort of took it all away and i was just like. what? anyway. whatever. good for jack hes a guardian now its official he cares about people and kids. whee.

Emeryk Wesninski my beloved (not really. I also forgot he existed and debated killing him dead again instead of confronting my embarrassing ocs)

If it isn’t obvious he’s intended to be Neil’s brother, which I’m probably gonna skirt around as much as possible due to my own shame lmao

Emeryk Wesninski:

was supposed to start on the Ravens lineup with Emiko their freshman year

dropped the sport for academic and familial pursuits (also cause he was not about to major in fucking business)

We’re gonna pretend I know why the hell I decided having an Em (Moriyama) and Em (Wesninski) was a good idea cause I did create them at the same time but honestly? fuck if I know.

Pretending I can do math I think there’s a six year gap between Neil and Emeryk. Or at least it’s around there. So when Mary and Neil went on the run Emeryk was 16 years old and pretty deeply involved in his father’s business. Not that he enjoyed it. He and Mary knew there was a far smaller chance of success survival with three of them instead of two and Neil had the better chance. So he told her to just him and go, with only a little resentment.

Emeryk escapes some of the worst parts of his father’s work through a series of deals with the Moriyama’s, specifically Ichirou. He and Ichirou aren’t far apart in age and now he of course wonders what the hell was doing, but he would rather have indebted himself to Ichirou over Kengo. And he knew one day Ichirou would be in charge, he just didn’t expect it to be quite so soon.

So instead of getting sucked in deeper (to the Wesninski’s business at least), he’s able to somewhat save himself. He enrolls in Edgar Allan University at 18 and doesn’t sign a contract to play with the Ravens. Despite it he and Emiko still become friends and he has some, albeit limited, interaction with Kevin, Riko, and Jean.

He studies criminal justice and goes on to study law. All of it, of course, being put towards working for the Moriyama’s. But at least he’s not actively killing people.

He spends a lot of his time covering up any tracks Mary and Neil leave behind. Whenever he can find them, he knows that means someone else will, and he does his best to remove any sort of paper trail or hint to their existence. Even if it’s just confusing Nathan’s men. Anything that gives them enough time to create a new identity and move.

He’s not exactly happy about it but he does feel like it’s part of what he agreed to years ago. So he lets the resentment build and does it anyway.

And when Neil shows up at Palmetto, seemingly not even trying to be subtle, he is so fucking pissed. Everything’s undone. He can run his mouth and mess things up as much as he wants but he knows it’s only a matter of time.

By the time Baltimore occurs Emeryk is so far removed from the Wesninski’s and so deeply involved with the Moriyama’s that he doesn’t even see it coming. At least not fast enough. When Stuart reaches out to him he reluctantly agrees to work with the FBI, temporarily, to find Nathan.

That’s the first time Neil and Emeryk see each other in years. Emeryk’s pretty sure Neil doesn’t remember half of it, blacked out from pain. And he sure as fuck wasn’t going to stick around to visit him in the hospital. He gets out of there with the intent of talking to the least amount of cops he can.

He forms a bit of a relationship with Neil after that. Mostly “don’t talk to cops”, “seriously get a fucking lawyer”, “have you considered not running your damn mouth?”, and the like. But ultimately he doesn’t give a shit what Neil gets up to. Not his business (though he can’t help but keep a worried eye on him to make sure he’s not getting into too much trouble. He spent too long doing it to stop. And if it has the added benefit of seeing his brother happy and healthy, somewhere he can call home, no one else to needs to know)

While Emeryk didn’t wind up a full blown serial killer he’s still a worse person than like Emiko. He’s very much out to save his own skin. He’ll always go with his best chance of survival. For now that lies with the Moriyama’s. But if a better opportunity ever presented itself he’d take it in a heartbeat.

And idk that’s just a little bit about Em (Wesninski) who I made 4-ish years ago and forgot about until now

The one thing the movies do that is close to canon is having Shinichi show so little care for Ran's feelings and I wish they wouldn't. Can he not be such an awful friend to her.

Sonoko and Kaito need to be come friends. Kaito deserves a friend like her who will defend him to the death.

Shinichi is also aware there is something off about what's happening with KID and wants to discover the mystery his husband is leaving for him.

I’m baffled as to why Tommy married Lizzie really. She is unsuitable to be a politician’s wife, a mistress on the side surely would have been fine, it's even norm. It is no way a good strategy or helps his reputation.

Agree! There was no strategic gain for him at all. It might nominally help his reputation with some working class voters, that he married within his class and not above it, but I don't know how that works if Lizzie's reputation as a prostitute was well known. Either way this nominal reputational boost with one demographic is not likely significant enough to be any part of his decision making. I feel there had to be some level of personal care for her in there, and a desire to do something for her, as well as his strong sense of family, because otherwise why would he marry her?

Based on cues in the canon, there's possible motivation including:

his strong cultural and personal sense of responsibility to family given Lizzie has his child - he's demonstrated this sense of family before with Grace, because as soon as he learned Grace was pregnant in S2, he went immediately to marriage. This was different to his conversations with S1 Grace where he was satisifed with a relationship and not marriage. (And even his S2 pre-pregnancy conversations with Grace, where he seemed satisifed with an affair. And the way he brought Duke into the picture.) His children are very important to him!

an acknowledment/respect for Lizzie's unashamed willingness to be a single mother to his child, and all the stigma that carries on top of her past; marrying her would be the least he could do to help erase that stigma for her. Noting no amount of money would erase the stigma of single motherhood given his and her class of origin. These social privileges to the mistresses of upper class men do not apply to the mistresses of working class men who've acquired money.

he was feeling really fucked up at the end of S4, and Lizzie's helped him with comfort/care through other times when he was feeling really fucked up. Apart from being his regular pre S1, when his war trauma would have been the worst, in S2 Lizzie features with this one observable sexual event where he was with her immediately after Polly told him to get over Grace, and immediately before he had to do an assassination he didn't want to. S3 he clearly articulates she stopped his heart from breaking. Lizzie (and sex with Lizzie) represents some kind of easy, accessible physical comfort/softness for him between slices of hell.

some kind of guilt at how he'd treated her in the past (John, Epsom) when here she was, prepared to be a single mother to his child with no shame.

he actually likes her - S2 he goes to a special effort to elevate her out of being a prostitute, even when she was probably barely capable of the role at that point, S3 features several elements suggesting he trusts her significantly, S4 they have relaxed conversations despite all the shit going on, even in S5 in the middle of the worst and cutting at each other verbally, they both mutually decide to still try to find some middle ground where they can stay together, which suggests they have a lot of non-sexual/conversational history not shown on screen. They also have several almost comedic moments of chemistry in S4 and S5 which ties back to liking, too.

I 100% feel Ruby was the trigger for the marriage, no matter any other motivation, I don't think he'd marry her if there was no child. But he had to have more than *just* the child to go so far as marriage, hence the above.

I think, given Lizzie was the one he took to the bridge which was his 'can I still do good things the way Greta and I used to speak about' moment, this sort of symbolic link carried through Ruby's conception, he might have also thought marrying Lizzie would be a gesture of 'doing a good thing.' There is a constant theme in the series, and Tommy even clearly and verbally articulates it in S5, that when Tommy tries to do a good thing, people get hurt. Hence the weight of his regret for marrying Lizzie as expressed in S6 -- marrying her, which he likely saw as a good act, resulted in Lizzie's anguish and exposed her to hurt by both Tommy personally in his emotional closed-off state, and via the acts Tommy was doing in trying to sabotage Mosley, which he would not deviate from even when conscious of the hurt it would cause Lizzie.
