The Company for Economic Co-operation and Development's Better Life Index ranks Canada amongst the best places to live in the world. Here's why. A study released yesterday by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Advancement (OECD) discovered that "Canada performs incredibly well in steps of well-being," according to an online report.
The research study scored 36 nations, including 34 OECD members, Russia and Brazil. No total ranking is reported. The findings will surprise some, provided our 7.2% nationwide unemployment rate, 14.5% youth joblessness rate and financial development projections that stay soft in the short-term. Here are 7 highlights from the OECD report: The typical home makes US$ 28,194 each year after taxes.
There is disparity at both ends of the profits spectrum however, not surprisingly. The top 20% takes home US$ 55,718, while the bottom 20% earns US$ 10,526. We ranked seventh on family wealth and ninth on income. Canadians invest 2 minutes a day volunteering; that has to do with half the OECD average. On the other hand, 64% said they 'd helped a stranger in the last month.
We ranked seventh on support network. Nine in 10 Canadians are pleased with their real estate. The typical home in this nation supplies 2.6 spaces per occupant, more than any other nation. Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Amanda Brugel
As we complete Month 4 of self-isolation, and many parts of the country enter various phases of re-opening, FASHION is winding down its months-long self-isolation diary series, spotlighting how some of our favourite Canadians have been living their lives in lockdown. Rounding out the series featuring actors, designers, influencers and artists is actress Amanda Brugel, currently starring on The Handmaid’s Tale, Snowpiercer and Kim’s Convenience.
Amanda Brugel, actress
So, we are nearing the end of June and approaching Day 4768 of isolation. I’m kidding. Kinda. Two months ago, this would have been a much more depressing, wine-soaked journal entry, however, like many of you, I have finally stopped fighting this new normal and started to accept the unconventional and misshapen gifts it has offered.
6:30am I share custody of my two boys Jude (nine) and Phoenix (six) and since they’re with me today, my morning opens with Phoenix’s wet mouth pressed against my ear, whispering that he wants “a snack”. I don’t know why his mouth is wet and I do not wish to find out. I throw a croissant, apple slices and a gummy vitamin on a plate and turn on kid-friendly animal blooper videos. I then head back to bed, but can’t resist the urge to reach for my phone, where I inevitably fall down a news wormhole. Somehow the world has, yet again, changed within the seven hours that I was asleep.
7:30am Jude is awake now and it has been 60 whole minutes since Phoenix last ate, so I prepare breakfast and a bucket of coffee which I will put down somewhere and forget to consume. The three of us watch CNN for a bit and Jude grills me on what the journalists and guests are discussing. At the beginning, when the headlines were dominated by COVID-19, my boys were much more interested in their cereal, but now that the majority of news coverage hovers around police brutality and systemic racism, they are much more open to what Chris Cuomo has to say. My ex-husband is a police officer and my children are bi-racial. They have been exposed to these types of discussions since birth, but ALWAYS in private. I didn’t realize how much, they too, would be riveted by public conversations about race.
10am We now begin the excruciating task of homeschooling. My partner, filmmaker and actor Aidan Shipley, has been quarantining with us, so today, he works with Jude in the dining room and I cover Phoenix. We have discovered that the most effective way to get Phoenix to focus is to promise him full body ankle swings above the couch after every completed assignment. This morning we soared through “sh” words, so Aidan just sprinted over to our work zone, grabbed Phoenix by his ankles and swung him towards the ceiling ten times to celebrate. It’s bonkers, but it works.
11am Snack number 5.

12pm I have a Zoom read-through with the cast of Kim’s Convenience for our Season 5 scripts. It’s a very strange exercise to act alone opposite my laptop with zero physical human connection. Also, comedy requires laughter, however, in this medium, we all have to try to stay relatively quiet so that the writers have a chance to hear their work spoken out loud for the first time. So I wind up sitting with my hand clamped over my mouth for forty minutes in an effort to not ruin the read-through. I fail three times. Hopefully, I don’t get fired.
1pm I now have 45 minutes to respond to texts, emails, phone calls and article requests from allies. Wait. I should back up. About three weeks ago, I posted a few controversial messages on Instagram, inviting non-BIPOC to become more vocal about the Black Lives Matter movement and subsequently implored them to join the now viral, global conversation about systemic racism. I did not intend it to be contentious, however, maaaaany Black Americans did not approve of my willingness to answer questions or give suggestions. To be honest, this portion of my day has almost become a second job. And while, yes, it can be emotionally draining, it is also the moment in time that I have been waiting for my entire life. My theory; I have asked people for help. I can take 45 minutes out of my day to teach them how to do so.
2pm For the love of God; SNACK TIME.
3pm This is my favourite part of the day. Me and all of my boys head to a creek near my house for “Gym Class”. The boys take their scooters and race ahead, while Aidan and I saunter through a forrest decorated with painted rocks left behind by kind strangers. We read their messages that say “Smile” or “You Are Loved” and “Keep Going” and we proceed as instructed. We eventually end at a small beach beside the creek and skip stones, walk over fallen trees as if they were tightropes and the boys take a dip and search for sea glass. This part right here has been my greatest gift from COVID-19.
5pm NO YOU CAN’T HAVE A SNACK DINNER IS ALMOST READY. I’m mid dinner prep which is my second gift from COVID-19, because I did not cook before this mess. I would dabble. Reheat. Definitely dine out. Or, wait for my amazing mother to show up with foods. But, tonight I am making Butter Chicken with garlic naan and I haven’t set anything on fire and it smells almost good. We sit down to dinner and commence “Dinner Theatre” games, where we improvise scenes or pass silly questions around the table.
7pm The boys are in their PJs and we take a “night walk” around my neighbourhood. Now that summer weather is here and everyone has stepped a little further out of their homes, we take this time to scream talk at our neighbours from a safe distance and compare notes about the their isolation experience. It’s 28 degrees and smells like fresh cut grass.
8pm Phoenix is tucked in and now I am able to steal a private moment with Jude and allow him to watch the latest Daily Show or Shaun King post. Tonight we are discussing the disparities in African American healthcare in the US. I show him a Nat Geo video on the conditions in slave ships. We talk about how a bunch of K-Pop stans high-jacked Trump’s return to the campaign trail. I have a moment where I wonder if any other parents are having these quiet conferences with their nine year olds. Is this the new bedtime story? I hope so. I have learned more about systemic racism, slavery in Canada, accountability and even my own privilege as a fair-skinned person of colour in the last 18 days than I have in 43 years. I am heartbroken and emboldened, but mostly grateful to take my child along for the ride I didn’t have.
9pm Wine. A bit of news. And an episode of Legendary as a night cap. Aidan and I snuggle on the couch and I recognize that although I miss my old life, I would not return to it for a second. I have grown tremendously from this discomfort. As a mother, a partner, chef and activist. I am watching my world, in real time, attempt to do the same. I am tired. But emboldened. Good night.

Top 5 Countries Living In A Real Life Fairy Tale World
The United States of America is home to many personal freedoms that we take for granted a lot of the time. The U.S. is synonymous with progress and prosperity; however, there are some countries that are prospering and progressing in a more rapid and efficient pace than we may think especially in terms of money.
There are many countries that have implemented many policies that create a better society for their citizens. Admittedly, most of these countries utilize some form of socialism in order to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive in society and increase their standard of living. Socialism is best defined as a form of government where the means of production are owned by the state.
The biggest common misconception about socialism is that it’s simply communism and many use the terms interchangeably. This is not the case. Communism has absolute power over resources in a society which usually results in corruption in the government. Socialism on the other hand is when resources are more distributed within a society by the government and, in addition, the government offers welfare services that improve the quality of life. The reason the United States has yet to catch up is that it takes some form of regulation on the free market that we have.
Worlds in fairy tales are tiny bubbles; the same way that living in the United States of America may feel sometimes. We often do not think about what our neighbors beyond our borders and seas are doing right in their respective countries. The land of the free and home of the brave could take some tips from those in other countries.
Here are five countries that are living in a fantasy world (to Americans) as a result of their considerate governments.
1. Austria: Generous Vacations
The United States of America is the only developed country without mandatory paid days or vacations. Americans are somewhat known for their “work until you die” lifestyles. It may be huge ambition or maybe downright being brainwashed into believing that is our only purpose in life. This is obviously not the case. Nobody likes to constantly put themselves in situations of stress but our society has led us to believe that how our way of life should be. That’s not how it is in Austria though.
In Austria, workers are entitled to a minimum of twenty two paid vacation days and thirteen paid holidays. However, many times this number is even higher especially for workers with twenty five years of experience or citizens who work laborious jobs. The average worker in America gets only sixteen paid days off. It gets even more shocking when you realize that about a quarter of Americans do not receive any paid time off at all.
Vacation time is crucial to the mental and physical state of a human being. Who doesn’t enjoy having time off to relax and get away from the stress of school or work? The Austrian people have made this work by finding the right rhythm and balance between work and rest. They are essentially putting the needs of the people ahead of the economy.
Mandatory time off work does have a tiny negative impact on a country’s economy; however this raises the question of do we as Americans prioritize wealth over our physical and mental well-being?
2. Italy: Royal Healthcare
Here’s a scenario that some people are familiar with. Someone you may know gets injured and is in need of surgery, rest, and medication. Because human life is precious, one does everything in their power in order to overcome this medical issue. Months later, this person is well and alive but is sent the hospital bill. Now on top of recovering from their trauma, they now have to find a way that they are going to pay for this immense hospital bill.
Now imagine you get injured, go the hospital and receive all the medical care you need. Once you’ve recovered, you can go home and continue life WITHOUT a medical bill to worry about. This may seem like a giant fantasy to you but for the Italians, it’s a normal thing.
Italians rank among the top ten by the World Health Organization when it comes to quality health services and accessibility. The United States ranks thirty-seven in this ranking despite us having the most expensive healthcare in the world!
Italy offers its citizens a National Health Service known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN). This is made possible through taxes and government funding. This universal healthcare can cover costs associated with tests, checkups, medications, and even surgeries!
The United States has a more privatized version of healthcare. In short, those who can afford it have it, and those who can’t don’t. The United States has attempted to bring universal healthcare coverage to Americans through ObamaCare. ObamaCare is also known as the Affordable Care Act with the goal to make health insurance available to more people especially those of low income. It’s a system that has since insured millions of Americans yet has been met with immense scrutiny among the Republican Party. They have since tried to repeal it multiple times to no avail. If other developed countries have been able to provide universal healthcare why can’t we?
Italians still have the option to go for privatized healthcare which they pay for. It must be nice to have the choice of staying alive without the fear of having a massive debt on your hands afterwards.
3. Canada: Liberating Personal Freedoms
O Canada! America’s friendly upstair neighbor. Home of maple syrup, cold weather, and Tim Hortons which I hear is better than Dunkin’ Donuts. I’ll have to be the judge of that someday but for now let’s talk about a huge shocker on this list.
According to a report from the Legatum Institute, ninety-four percent of Canadians feel that they have the freedom to live their lives based on their personal wishes and desires. The report from the Legatum Institute considers a variety of factors including the economy, education system, safety, and social capital. Additionally they were also the most tolerant of immigrants with ninety-two percent of the population believing their country is a great place to immigrate to. Their flexible immigration policies are what makes them a role model for what we can accomplish if we, as Americans, were more tolerant of immigrants fleeing from oppression in their home countries.
To put that into perspective, the United States was ranked fifteen in this same ranking for personal freedom. In the current climate, we are also among an administration that sees immigration as detriment to society. It’s ironic isn’t it how America prides itself on its principles of freedom yet our neighbors up north seem to enjoy more freedoms than we do.
Canadians also enjoy that free healthcare that Italy has and it is also funded through taxes.
4. Iceland: Equal Kings and Queens
In Iceland, they hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.
When people think of Iceland they may think of a tiny country that is majority mountains and a frozen wasteland with no life happening there. This is not the case. We should actually be celebrating Iceland and looking at them for inspiration. Iceland has consistently been ranked number one in gender equality for the past nine years in the world among other countries!
Many dispute that the reason why Iceland is so ahead of the world in terms of gender equality is because of their policies on paid maternity and paternity leave. In short, when both parents inherit an equal responsibility in caring for a child, it leads to a massive change in societal expectations between men and women. The traditional gender roles of a family no longer exist.
In America, we’ve made great progress when it comes to regarding men and women equally. It seems that where we, and an immense amount of other countries, lack in gender equality is within our own homes. We still hold a covert but universal belief that a mother is and should be the primary care giver of her children. The Icelandic people see the responsibilities of parents as 50/50 and the government supports these progressive ideals by offering paid maternity and paternity leave in an effort to emphasize equal responsibility between a mother and father in raising a child.
5. Germany: Hogwarts Without A Bill
Possibly the most shocking part of this list. The thing that Americans could never imagine even in their wildest dreams. A college education that is determined by your ability and capacity instead of you or your parents’ income. Can you imagine? Unfortunately many students don't have a spare tens of thousands of dollars laying around their houses so we are limited in our choices when it comes to a higher education.
Germany has the largest economy in Europe. Which is partly why it is able to offer higher education at no cost. They also consistently rank higher in readings, maths, and science.
The education system in Germany is a little complex. Put simply, the German education system is dual; there’s instruction and there’s training. It puts a vital emphasis on finding a student’s passion in order to prepare them for a career into adulthood. Majority of students go into apprenticeships and finally into their careers. Fortunately, those who do go to college will graduate with a degree and without a ball and chain of debt to pay off.

How to live healthy through life’s transitions as you #AgeLikeABoss
Every one of us desire to live, long, healthy lives. To be happy knowing that we lived life on our terms, chased our passions, and made the most of every opportunity. At least that's what I want but as I've learned not everything goes to plan, but there's hope that with a little foresight and planning, we can prepare ourselves for life's transitions when they present themselves.
What is harmless in life, yet ultimately will kill you?
Recently, I lost my father to pancreatic cancer. Cancer wasn't something any of us expected or planned for, and when the ‘terminal' diagnosis came down from his doctors, it rocked all who knew him. At 72 years young, he was just getting started. My stepmother was there to be the rock and help navigate the maze of end of life planning. Both a rock to which we found ourselves tethered, as well, she's a living champion helping us remember the greatness that my father bestowed on us with his life. I'll always be grateful for everything she provided my dad in his life. It was going through this process – this life transition – that really opened my eyes to some stark realities that none of us can escape.
Time.
The past few days have been filled with time in the presence of my father and our close family. I feel grateful for the…
由 Dai Manuel 发布于 2017年3月2日
That little pesky reality that seems to go by unnoticed for much of our lives until one day we find ourselves waking up and realizing that life isn't the same anymore. Age has become our new reality. Acceptance that our physicality has started to decline and things we used to do in our 20's, 30's, and 40's aren't as easy in our 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond. Our ability to do the things we come to take for granted like carrying groceries in from the car – or driving the car! – lifting ourselves from our chairs, preparing our meals, navigating stairs, or simply ‘taking care of business'. All seemingly normal everyday tasks, but for many are daily activities that become increasingly difficult with age. This begs the question, what do we do about it?
What's autonomy got to do with it?
Everything.
Age is nothing new, we deal with it on our terms, but as the aging population grows (5,000,000+ Canadians over the age of 65 alone), we see an increasing need for in-home support. As a result of this growing demographic of seniors, the Assisted Living Home industry is booming. I am the first to acknowledge that this conversation is difficult to have both to one's self as well as with those that matter most to us in our lives. Admitting that one's life is not as independent as it once was, is like conversations surrounding life insurance, painfully and fearfully honest. After all, getting older, death and taxes are 3 very distinct certainties in life and none of which and fun to admit to.
My mother has dedicated her life to the care of others. After spending her entire adult life working within Ontario's Healthcare sector, she's readying herself to retire as an associate director of care for an assisted living facility. This topic of interest couldn't have come at a better time as I've been fortunate to witness some of the steps she and my step-father are personally taking for the life transitions she foresees in the coming 20 years of their lives. From reinforcing the stair railings to simplifying her ability to continue gardening comfortably and confidently as she ages, but not everyone share's her foresight.
“One in four of us will die while residing in a nursing home“, along with other findings, caught my attention in a study published in JAGS by Kelly and Colleagues. They looked at the length of stay in nursing homes at the end of life and here are a few of the findings:
the median length of stay in a nursing home before death was 5 months
the average length of stay was longer at 14 months due to a small number of study participants who had very long lengths of stay
65% died within 1 year of nursing home admission
53% died within 6 months of nursing home admission
men died sooner after admission than women (men had a median length of stay of around 3 months versus 8 for women)
married nursing home residents died sooner after admission than unmarried participants (an average of 4 months sooner)
nursing home residents in the highest quartile of net worth died six months sooner than those in the lowest quartile.

How can we remain independent and living our lives on our terms as we age?
One thing is for sure, if given the opportunity to remain independent and continue living in our own homes as we age, there would be no debate.
We all desire the highest quality of life along with all the comforts we've come to love and expect. To better understand how and what is needed to make this a reality for the aging population, I interviewed head RN, Dana Huggett of Live Your Life Home Care. With over 15 years experience both in and out of hospital settings, Dana has seen first-hand the deteriorating effects our tapped healthcare system can have on a mounting aging population. With a shortage of hospital beds and big wait lists for long-term care facilities, for the 16 per cent of Canadians currently over the age of 65, home-care is becoming a necessary option.
Ontario Retirement Communities Association forecasts that by 2036, nearly one quarter of Canada's population will be 65+ (and I'm one of them!)… so if you aren't planning to grow old, then I guess this interview won't matter, but for the rest of us, take note, you want to watch this.
In the ‘Living Through Life's Transitions' interview, Dana shares:
Why aging shouldn't stop us from getting the most out of life
Quantification vs. qualification of age (and life) – we're more than just a number, right?
Surprising statistics to be aware of regarding the aging populations in North America
Warning signs that someone may be avoiding admitting their need for help
Physical Activity: the minimums!

Getting Older doesn't have to be hard (but you have to work at it)! What's your life plan?
Age is a reality we all have to face at some point in our lives.
We expect everything to be as it is tomorrow as it is today, but there comes a time we have to except the inescapable – getting older happens to everyone!
But how we age isn't a ‘preset' or a predetermined path. As the Science of longevity is showing, lifestyle choices influence our body's DNA, along with outside stimulus, toxins and a variety of other variables like the foods we eat and how we deal with stress in our lives, all can impact how quickly we age. And yet, we can make choices that will improve our opportunities to slow this process. Here are 5 simple choices you can start making immediately…
5 Simple Daily Lifestyle Choices You Can Make Today to Improve Your Health of Tomorrow
#1. Daily purposeful movement.
And I'm not talking about just going to the gym – I'm talking about going for a brisk walk at the local park, playing a game of pick-up sports with your friends, taking up a new sport like yoga or paddle boarding. Age doesn't play into what you can and can't do – you decide that one.
#2. Practice mindful meditation every day.
Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and without judgement. Through the practice of meditation, we see reductions in grey matter density in areas of the brain related with anxiety and stress; as well as decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Along with regulating blood pressure, reducing inflammation in the body, and decreasing feelings of loneliness… the list is long for this one daily practice!
#3. Take up a creative hobby.
As they say, the mind is a beautiful thing to waste. More and more science supports the idea of constantly challenging our minds to learn new skills. Stimulating various parts of our brains keep us mentally sharp especially as we age. Taking up painting, paddle boarding or yoga are a few great practices that can help with keeping the body-mind connection healthy, strong and intact as we age.
#4. Eat more vegetables and fruits.
Smart eating starts with adding more green leafy and colorful fruits and veggies to your dietary mix. For starters, these foods contain trace elements, micronutrients, minerals and vitamins with anti-oxidant properties that help with keeping the body functioning optimally and reducing some of the harmful oxidizing effects caused by our environments. PS – those are the nasty things that age us!
#5. Find a community aka a Tribe.
If you haven't heard about the Blue Zones by Dan Beuttner, you really need to check out his incredible findings about a unique group of Centenarians (people living to be 100+ years of age). One of nine commonalities shared by these special populations is their incredible sense of purpose and belonging. There's something to be said about being a part of a tribe.

Creating a Life Plan while Living the Best Life Possible
I realized in speaking with Dana of Live Your Life Homecare, that there are some fairly clear indicators of the different phases of our lives. We can try to navigate these changes on our own when we find ourselves or our loved ones knee-deep in a stark reality that things have changed – or we can create a plan to deal with these milestones when they eventually happen. Transitional support means we can navigate these lifestyle changes with confidence, knowing as we plan, and lead a lifestyle that supports aging well, there comes a time when we transition into ‘new phases’ of life.
But with this in mind, how do we best prepare ourselves for transitioning and living well through these lifestyle changes?
For starters, there's no specific age that determines what a ‘phase' is in our life. No two people are the same and no two lives are lived the same way. That's why there's no cookie cutter answer to give you. Whether the need is for a ‘helping hand', ‘nurturing care', or ‘vital care', there are options available, no matter our age. There's a peace of mind and comfort knowing that when the day comes and some support is needed, there's someone there to help. Allowing us to remain in our homes as long as we can, feeling confident that we got this thing called ‘age' in the bag!
I know that being proactive in our life planning is fantastic in theory, but following through on a plan is not as simple as black or white. That's life, isn't it? It's unpredictable and ‘things' happen which throw our plans out the proverbial window at times. I know my father didn't plan to get sick at the age of 72, but because of the customized support, he was able to spend much of his time with my stepmom, our family and close friends while in the comfort of his own home.
Aging shouldn’t stop you from getting the most out of your life.
Age is a reality we all have to face at some point in our lives. We may not be able to expect everything to be as it is tomorrow as it is today, but that shouldn't limit us from living our life like it will be. There's certainly value in taking actionable steps each day that will improve our odds of living the best life possible as we age. These seemingly small, daily choices and actions compounded over time will not necessarily improve our quantity of life, but for damn sure it will positively influence our quality of life today, tomorrow and potentially for years to come.
