Giving ourselves permission to enjoy life
After I had (mostly) finished processing my grief over leaving a group I'd been involved with, I had started to slowly work towards writing my book again (dribs and drabs, worldbuilding). Then I intentionally set it aside to focus on the election and the class I'm teaching that followed the election. I knew that my brain was full of political news and teaching 24/7.
So now that I've done what I could, I'm giving myself permission to return to writing. And to return to teaching myself Latin, which fell by the wayside when classes started.
These are for me. I give myself permission, maybe even a mandate, to do these things that bring me joy.
I'm still planning to organize, I am reworking my spring class to focus on resistance activism, and I'm looking for ways to help educate and inform people through "smart books" related to politics, psychology, morality, and persuasion. Those are my "work".
And I can now watch my outdoor pots grow herbs and vegetables this winter too. I can't keep animal pets, so plant pets do for me.
Work and play. Playful work. Workful play. We need a bit of everything.
Find the things that bring you joy and sustain you. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We've endured and kept going through a lot the past decade, and we need to keep going.
We'll do it together.

Now I know they were constrained because of Covid but I think my perfect Supernatural ending would be a sight flash forward, with a camera tracking through the bunker, bustling with hunters coming and going.
We start by finding Sam standing at the big map table back in his season 14 premier role as mission control dispatching hunters on jobs, but this time he's got a baby strapped to his chest. Eileen comes in, covered in a bit of blood spatter clearly just back from a hunt, and she gives like a quick kiss to the baby and to Sam.
The camera continues tracking showing Garth in the library with Claire and Patience, deeply embroiled in some sort of research/story exchange trying to one up each other. We continue on through the halls, alternate Bobby and Charlie walking past geared up for a hunt, down past the kitchen where Donna and Jody are standing round the counter drinking coffee and laughing. We keep continuing through the space seeing all these hunters gathered in this home base, laughing and living and bonding
And then we go down to the basement, where we find Dean. We see him only from the back; alone, on his knees, facing a wall that's been covered in some sort of sigils. He's murmuring quietly, clearly in the middle of some sort of incantation, and we have arrived just as he finishes with a flourish of sparks and smoke from the bowl at his knees. We then cut round to show a centered close-up of his face as he stares forward, a worried look on his face, watching the wall. It holds on this tight close up, hanging on his expression as he waits in trepidation. Then suddenly his face is lit by a bright glow, and we see his expression crack into a teary smile as we hear Castiel's voice say "Hello Dean".
And cut to black

I think it's a bit ridiculous that anyone other than Dean and Sam themselves (cause of their insane guilt complexes) would count opening the gates of hell as their fault. Like... here are these two ghost hunters, way over there heads in the demon department, doing their best to keep not only their remaining friends and family alive, but humanity in general, they're getting manipulated left and right by demons because they have no information otherwise, and yet they still found the location of hell's gates and closed it, when the actual person at fault (Jake Talley) opened them, and closed them as best they could.
That's while being attacked by the yellow eyed demon. Like? The only reason they didn't shoot Jake to begin with is because of Sam's humanity, and Ellen being in danger. How would this in any way be categorized as their fault?

To me Kripe maybe intentionally or unintentionally running the boys in a similar way he ran S1-S5 of supernatural.
Stay with me but I said something to my friend about halfway through season 4 of the boys when people were feeling lukewarm about this season and, my theory was that this season is simply a two parter. As in season 4 is the part 1 and season 5 is the part 2. I think the majority agree where season 4 is still top quality and has its shining moments everything just felt tighter and shinier plot wise in season 3 and it reminded me of supernatural.
Now what happened with spn S3 was a mistake like a happy accident one of the best seasons came out from an awful set of circumstances which resulted in the writers strike and had the episodes be strictly reduced. Therefore Deans demon deal literally felt like a ticking time bomb because it literally was and him getting sent to hell early worked out very well with the set of episodes cut. The boys S3 hasn’t worked out obviously exactly like that but was also as strong and even stronger than Spn S3. But S4 of Spn is from my opinion not as strong as S3. Still good but it’s more of a season of set ups for the final conflict in S5. Obviously still has its own original plot lines that end but a lot continue. And that’s what I expected halfway from S4 of the boys.
I saw a lot of people complaining that it wasn’t as tighter plot wise season 3 and things came out of the blue, how were they going to wrap this all up and the answer is they can’t. But they’re not meant to. Like season 4 of Spn this is a two parter and the season 4 finale of the boys especially during the last five minutes solidified that. So if that means anything and we have Spn season 5 to look at as a very rough precursor for the season 5 of the Boys, this could become one of the best finales of a show yet.

S5 E1 Supernatural
I SWEAR TO GOD! They need to take shots of holy water everytime they see each other! Bring back Cristo, this is ridiculous. But Meg's back! Bobby, sadly got possessed, but he resisted cus they were gonna make him hurt one of his boys 😭😭😭 John could never. This poor Nick dude is going through it, but he is funny. 'Ok Satan 🙄 tell me to quit drinking before bed' 'if it's all the same to you I'd like to wake up now' 'why the hell would I do something like that'. Dean is the vessel for Michael. All but two Angels are massive dicks. But guess who's back to save the boys? Castiel, being a bad ass and....carving things into the boys ribs.
AHHHHH BOBBY REASSURING SAM THAT IT WAS THE DEMON THAT TOLD HIM TO LOSE HIS NUMBER 😭😭😭 CUS BOBBY BELIEVES FAMILY IS FAMILY NO MATTER WHAT AND IT DON'T END IN BLOOD. But Dean doesn't think he can trust Sam anymore cus he took a demon's side over his brothers 😭😭😭

Down to Agincourt - here we go
So, after several nudges (and someone finally sending me the author and link as well as the title!), I started reading/listening to my text-to-voice software [badly] reading @seperis ' epic Down to Agincourt series.
"You don't have to work this hard," Dean assures him uneasily; every instinct is telling him there is something profoundly wrong here. "I really don't like you already." "And my work here is done." Castiel lifts one shoulder in the impression of a shrug, like he can't bother himself to even make the effort to do it right. Dean didn't realize he started toward him until he's close enough to see Castiel's face, a blur-edged oval with skin bleached of all color in brutal contrast to smudges like bruises beneath shadowed eyes.
It's gonna be one of those semi-lethal brainworms that wiggles in and never leaves again, so I'm still getting flashbacks and random belated insights about it in 30 years time, isn't it?

my rewatch has been on pause for a few days but it will never fail to get me how the show is like “yea Jack’s actually pretty emotionally intelligent and resourceful and learns things pretty quickly” and then the fandom dumbs him down so painfully he’s not even the same person anymore

supernatural s1e16 shadow (w. eric kripke)
Dad's vulnerable when he's with us. He's stronger without us around.
#supernatural#spn 1x16#sam and dean#john winchester#sam winchester#dean winchester#by grabthar's hammer this MUST be my last gifset from this episode! dear lord.#supernatural gifs#spn gifs#mygifs#spngifs#long post#there were so many face journeys that i felt were important but i tried to cut it down to the most important ones 🥴#dean is exhausted and seems so defeated admitting that john should leave#in my humble opinion i feel like this was a fairly flimsy reasoning thrown at the issue because jdm wasn't available for much filming#the two times i've just sat and watched the episode - like everyone seems to believe what they're saying - but i don't#like yes. safer. alone. of course??? whatever man. it's a tropey thing you say but i'm not buying it :p#i do buy however that it's the sam and dean show and we got limited jdm time and we need the focus to stay on s&d and get john out for now#and sam seems genuinely really upset that john is leaving - but his words say he's upset that he doesn't get to help catch yed basically#not that it's like... an emotional attachment to being with john? sam's feelings about john are always confusing#but his face is definitely saying it's not just about catching the demon#i don't have anything disparaging to say about john here. who am i? oh. except jdm smiled at weird times with him in this role#and it made him seem kind of... smug to me in a way?? that made me wanna punch him :P#there was one weird smile in this interaction. earlier in the episode there was a lot of what i consider inappropriate smiling LOL

1.14 nightmare is such an important turning point for sam. before this episode, he's unmotivated to save people, or at least he's not motivated where it conflicts with his personal goals of revenge. he's outright resisted working some cases (wendigo, scarecrow) and is willing to abandon people he knows will die because they're getting in the way of his search for john. when he is motivated to help people, it's because it relates to his own goals (home, for example) or because it personally affects him.
but in nightmare, max is a foil to sam. their upbringings were similar, their origins are the same, and they share psychic powers. the difference, according to dean, is that max is a killer, a monster, someone who is unempathetic because he's hurting people with his powers. sam sees himself in max, and importantly, he sees what he can turn into. he lets go of a lot of his anger, begins working to forgive john, and finds comfort in the fact that dean is looking out for him.
and the very next episode opens on sam pushing for a case dean is reluctant to pursue. the times sam has found and pushed a case up to this point are:
1.06 skin: he wants to help his friend (personal involvement with the victims)
1.08 bugs: sam finds the case, but the dialogue seems to suggest that dean was having sam research potential cases while dean was bringing home the bacon. uncertain origin here
1.09 home: he has a vision of jenny (personal involvement related to his vision and finding john)
1.12 faith: sam is looking for a way to save dean
1.14 nightmare: again, he has a vision of max's victims dying (personal involvement)
so based on this, it's rather rare for sam to seek out hunts unless he's involved in it some way, either through his visions or some other personal motivator. he wants to save the people he cares about, but he's resistant to saving people he doesn't know.
that makes sam pushing for the case in the benders important, because it's the first real time sam seems to be motivated to hunt for just for the sake of hunting. since it comes right after nightmare, it seems to imply that sam has decided to try helping people in order to prevent himself from becoming like max. if the circumstances were different, he could have turned out just like max: sam said so himself. and now he's extremely aware of that fact, and he's committing himself to avoiding that at all costs. the thing inside him, the visions, the rapid development of psychic powers, scares him—but dean is looking out for him. so he tries to reject the terrifying unknown of his powers by embracing dean, following his example. because dean is good, so by emulating dean sam can be good too.
