gatsby costumes part 5! myrtle :)

just finished this one! and she was super fun to design!!

we wanted the difference between myrtle-with-george and myrtle-with-tom to be Noticeable, hence myrtle-with-george having a more antiquated silhouette, &c. we’d taken to calling the two costumes the “frumpy fit” and “sexy dress” lol

ive been discussing myrtle’s costume (specifically the “sexy dress”) a Lot with her actor (we share 3/4 a level classes lol), so stuff like the low back and the slit are all her idea!

She was always curious and dependable. Bright Storm's the kind of gal who would give you the shirt off her back if she wore a shirt to give you!

Long before they set off on the Sun Trail, she would occasionally confide in Clear Sky how much she wanted to see the world. Travelers aren't unheard of; this was before the Tribe split into its 3 separate Wards and welcomed a lot of comers and goers, but it's not that no one had ever left before. It was more that she had friends and family she was committed to.

Clear Sky pressured her into it, reminding her of how much they'd see, how they'd raise their kits somewhere new, and that he'd be sad and alone forever if she didn't come. Every chance he got, he was bringing it up. He was always her weakness, she hated letting him down.

Her dependability was based on how good of a listener she was, even Gray Wing the Wise appreciated it. She was always keeping an eye out for people's wants and needs, making connections between little 'tips' she'd heard from one source or another. After Gray Wing's death, she found herself in demand for this ability.

She couldn't make a plan quite AS good as xem, but she was better at making a plan into a 'group project.' She'd brainstorm and encourage everyone to join in, putting their brains together until it all fell into place. She could be good at delegating authority based on it, too, though Tall Shadow had much more confidence than her.

And really it's her confidence that holds her back, and can you blame her?

She tried to keep Jagged Peak alive for a moon, but barely caught enough for herself, let alone him AND her unborn kittens. But how could she go back to the camp and just pretend he wasn't out here, dying?

When she goes shuffling back with her son in tow, it was humiliating, it was heartbreaking. It became soulcrushing when Clear Sky rejected her again. With just a few words, she doubted everything.

...was she capable of knowing if she was interpreting this sign correctly? ...had she done the right thing, or did she just make everything complicated? ...he's right, it must be her fault the other two died, if she hadn't--

Tall Shadow interrupted this thought spiral, but Clear Sky is like an infection in her mind. She'd tell you, in a moment of shame many years later,

"I wasn't strong enough to beat him. No no honey, I mean it like the truth. Clea-- Skystar now, he's powerful if nothing else, and he makes you believe it too. It's a special sort of person who can say no to that. I said a lot of his words before I even realized I still had his tongue in my mouth."

Bright doesn't realize how smart she is, because she's so smart she realizes how little she knows. And that can make her doubt herself. She's genuine and caring, but susceptible to more self-assured people making her doubt her own judgement.

But there's no one else Thunder Storm would rather have in his corner, that's for sure.

okay i will also answer this one right before class because it is a great question and also you are sweet and this made me happy 🥰

i think they both fell at the exact same time, which is when they met each other, and also that their feelings developed and grew stronger at the exact same pace. but they didn't get together immediately because yingxing was convinced it was just an immature crush on jing yuan's part and didn't want to get involved with him as a short life species. i also think he lied to himself a little about how much his feelings were. but in my happy world yingxing did eventually get together because jing yuan was very persistent and no one can avoid giving into him for that long 😌

then i think there was a long period of time where blade didn't remember enough to remember this. and when he did remember, it was snatches of things... red ribbon, a pain in his chest he thought was simply from his injuries... i don't think he understood his feelings or had the words to express them. meanwhile jing yuan was yearning the whole time for him so it looks like he was more in love but blade actually loves him more than any of us can fathom. they both love each other so much... jing yuan's love is a steady, everlasting sort of thing, while blade's love is obscured by a whole host of things, but burns so, so fiercely under the surface.

however, i could also see jing yuan not immediately realizing he was in love and having a sudden realization later on. but whether or not either of them know they're in love, they can't stop coming back to each other... orbiting stars, moths to flames, you get it. they can't be separated (╥﹏╥)

as for when they get together... i love pre canon yingjing so i'm biased to say they did get together pre canon. as for renjing i feel like post canon they would spend a lot of time together and basically be dating but never quite establish their relationship until one day someone else refers to them as a couple and blade stops a little but jing yuan just gets all smiley and of course neither of them deny it. that's what they are.

alternatively i am also so fond of renjing having sex whenever blade visits him but them never defining the relationship. they're in love of course but you know... it isn't as though they can be a normal couple with who they both are so they simply don't talk about it. jing yuan doesn't want to tie blade down and blade can't give him all that he wants... they're making me sad again i need to hold them so gently

as for their first time, i am a big fan of jing yuan's first time being blade but blade not knowing that, or if yingjing was a thing, of course it was yingxing. actually, i'm a big fan of both of their first times and only times being each other, as i can't picture them with anyone else ajksjdklfjaksdjflasa. but i could also potentially see yingxing getting with another short life species and jing yuan getting jealous and huffy about it...

used for inhaling chloroform! they'd soak the rags in the chloroform and then they'd put the mask on the patient and have them breathe it in!

there were a few styles but ough. i love them! chloroform was actually used to help during childbirth, originally it wasn't super popular but Vicky used it for her seventh kid so. if the queen does it-

and then in 1899 (because of one specific doctor especially) we started to really see IV therapy pick up, and ether could be used intravenously so you could have an IV anesthetic as well!

imagining proper communication for aziraphale and crowley is so difficult because so much of their dynamic is built on talking around what they really mean. stemming from 'we have to be careful what we say to each other in case heaven/hell is listening, don't thank me for helping you i'll get in trouble' all the way to 'one of us just essentially confessed love and the other literally said 'i need you' after we both vastly misunderstood that what we were asking each other were different versions of the same thing (being safe and together)'.

how would they even talk to each other if they didn't have to censor themselves? if the repression hadn't been there? it wouldn't've been the same story at all. their entire relationship is built around Not saying what they mean, and where that fails just repressing it. but it slips yknow, like they so obviously love each other, almost definitely they can tell the feeling is mutual - but they can never acknowledge it. because heaven or hell might be listening, and they probably don't know how to talk about feelings cos they just. never have.

which is really heartbreaking.
