gatsby costume designs part 3!!
it’s him….. the great gatsby………….
i don’t really have much to say about this one other than the year 11 playing gatsby is Not Pleased that he has to wear a pink suit and have a middle part lol
#the preface to these costume designs is that my school is a state school with barely any budget for costumes#but these are going in my uni application portfolio so my drama teacher convinced me to do them as if we had budget#and we’d work backwards#hence the bib-front shirt here#in reality it’d be the same shirt throughout the show but I’m gonna alter it to have a detachable collar. and we’ll buy a couple collars#yippee!#well. not to the nonexistent budget. but yknow#con doodles#walm school gatsby#the great gatsby#jay gatsby

gatsby* costume designs part one :D
*my school’s production of the great gatsby
starting off with jordan and mildred (aka the first designs i drew) :D
mildred’s an extra character we made for the purposes of having more roles— she’s a tennis player, a day-drinker, kinda sucks, and she dislikes nick vehemently (i get slapped by her at one point— and while we’re not Pleased that jordan had to be split into, the cast loves mildred and cherishes her greatly :) plus she was fun to design for
(also i’d like to caveat that most of the designs will have styles for longer hair, because non of our main “female” cast has short hair)
#when we went to see the local private school’s production we all were confused because#where was mildred D:#we forgot she doesn’t exist lol#anyways stan mildred <3 she sucks immensely but we love her anyways#anyways i love 1920s fashion#the great gatsby#con doodles#jordan baker#mildred hill#hope you enjoy my designs :D#walm school gatsby

gatsby costumes part 5! myrtle :)
just finished this one! and she was super fun to design!!
we wanted the difference between myrtle-with-george and myrtle-with-tom to be Noticeable, hence myrtle-with-george having a more antiquated silhouette, &c. we’d taken to calling the two costumes the “frumpy fit” and “sexy dress” lol
ive been discussing myrtle’s costume (specifically the “sexy dress”) a Lot with her actor (we share 3/4 a level classes lol), so stuff like the low back and the slit are all her idea!
#one of my rules for the costumes is that all dresses have to be below-knee length apart from a couple exceptions (some flappers in the ensem#ble; catherine; mrs mckee; myrtle)#because otherwise it’d be a nightmare#anyways we’re having a bit that when she enters in the sexy dress all the guys stare at her knees (with varying levels of enthusiasm)#after this i only have 2 costumes to actually design#and three characters to draw for before im done with the main cast :D thank god lol#i love costume designing but i am super behind :p#con doodles#walm school gatsby#the great gatsby#myrtle wilson#no one talk to me about 2013 movie myrtle. ough#oh! and shoutout to myrtle’s actor for being such a good sport and having to wait so long lol#they’re great

gatsby costume designs 2: nick carraway!
my school’s production of gatsby has two nicks— summer of 1922 nick and narrator nick (who’s framing the narrative to a journalist in the winter in the early 30s).
we decided that nick would be dressed in neutrals— for him to blend into the background in contrast to the rest of the main cast but still be largely distinguishable from the ensemble (whose colours are black and gold)— regular normal nick is in browns and warm greys, while narrator nick is in cool greys (maybe i’m being heavyhanded on the semiotics here but who caresssss im having fun)
#best part of nicks design is that regular normal nick doesn’t have any costume changes :D yippee!#this is because every scene with regular normal nick starts and ends with his presence on stage#and I do Not have the time to do quick changes in between scenes#ignore the obvious detnoir!davey jacobs influence on narrator nick. what works works lol#I’m just realising i forgot to colour narrator nicks shoes. oh well#con doodles#walm school gatsby#the great gatsby#nick carraway
