If you were by any chance wondering how was my bobbining and lacing going, let me tell you, I was suffering.
In my classes, we started making leaves (not sure of the correct English terminology) and let me tell you, just as in the nature not a single two leaves are identical.
This heart we made screams: It's 2003, I am 12, listening to Avril Lavigne and feeling absolutely badass
Tumblr media
(all mistakes were therefore intentional and a design choice. Also I forgot to take a pic of the heart unpinned)
Aditionally, as out goverment decided to be a little bit silly (read: it's a nightmare) and claiming the stuff like our culture is being destroyed by the evil western influences, my only reaction was of course deciding I need to make the absolutely most depraved filthiest thing with our beloved traditional craft
Tumblr media
(I didn't draw them myself as I am not that good, i digged from archives on lacedesign.cz some pictures, smashed them together, replaced one head and edited the colours of the original pictures so it is useable as a template. I did it in MS Word, don't ask)
I am far unskilled for this. I am guessing how to proceed and I am afraid there will be a monstrosity when I unpin it. Truly desecrating the culture I guess. (I know the og designer was Czech not Slovak, just to add an extra layer of fun)
Anyway, this is the first lady in progress
Tumblr media
(actually I have already made a little bit of the skirt now but also forgot to take a picture and I don't want to wait until I come back home)
Maybe I don't know what I am doing but it allows me to be spiteful, so it's fun

I made a list of all the DoaI characters we know of so far and any information on them that might be relevant, use this for theory-crafting (and correct me if you think there’s anything I should add):
Dreams of an Insomniac - Characters
Volume 0 - Haunted Halloween PSA
Tommy Merrick
Overarching story’s protagonist
Visiting old family home, vaguely recognises the things on the tapes and even knows a Veldigun (possibly either Winfrey or Simon) personally
Has to do something in Lankmann’s Asylum (post-collapse)
Owen Grady
Reporter who wrote the OG Bizzare Break-In article
Rick Graham
Owner of Grimmso’s
Sean Grim
Listed as “Sceptical Civillian” in Volume 0, but his segment of the report was shown to be scripted in In Loving Memory
“To think they said our small-town representative was corrupt…” <- possibly Lankmann?
(see Volume 1 segment for Alex Williams)
Officer Kenneth Krueger
Father of Klaus Krueger
Attacked by Clyde in 1986/7(?), became riddled with Veldigun cooties, and was experimented on by Lankmann until his death in 1996
Death was faked in 1987, claiming he had hung himself in his son’s closet (complete with a forged suicide note, which may possibly be a real note twisted to look like one due to the heavy distortion and blurring of the final paragraph?)
Mortimer Grey
In-house animator for the Lankmann Foundation
Most famous for work on cartoon series Candy Mouse
Possibly riddled with Veldigun cooties?
Mr. Wilson
Father of Sam Wilson, one of the children “eaten” by Clyde on Halloween ‘86
Got “eaten” by Clyde the following January
Wife still alive by the time Family Photo Album takes place, or at least wasn’t “eaten” by Clyde
Clyde, or “The Smiling Snatcher”
The first(?) Veldigun to make itself known in Eastridge County
“Infant” (by Veldigun standards) during the events of Halloween ‘86
Used to hunt children, now has a preference for adults
Uses taunting and psychological manipulation to get to its victims
Can wear the skin of its victims, though wether this is literal or just an extension of its hallucinations is unknown
Volume 1 - Foundation Archives
Alex Williams
Lives on 66 Elk Crescent
Partial witness to Halloween ‘86, was interviewed by ECN shortly afterwards on the same night(?)
Was put under “witness protection” by the Lankmann Foundation, borderline forced to join the asylum shortly after its founding
Going to meeting with someone “very dangerous” after the events of the recording of Volume 1
Someone that they care about has been “hurt” by the Lankmann Foundation, in a mysterious incident that will probably be touched on in the mini-volumes
Doctor Herbert Lankmann
Founded the Lankmann Foundation in 1990(?) with money inherited from his late father (who he probably murdered)
Pays the police to hide all the unethical things he does
Has mechanical hands and screens fitted into/replacing his eyes (likely a more accurate and trustworthy version of the goggles?)
Became more aggressive, alongside the Caretakers, after an unknown “incident” (likely the aforementioned one that hurt one of Alex’s friends)
Patient 66
Lived on 45 Elk Crescent
Abducted from her home by the Caretakers for unknown reasons
Described as “about in her 30s” by Alex, shows no obvious sign of mental illness and is physically fine
Went into Room 66, encountered Winfrey and didn’t die???? (the first time at least)
Probably died the second time (and got her voice stolen)
The Caretakers
Silent, stoic henchmen of Lankmann
Wear masks and goggles at all times
Winfrey, or “Specimen 02”
14-foot tall Veldigun, kept within Room 66 in the Lankmann Foundation
Auditory hallucinations come in the form of distant music, the knocking of doors and windows, the voices of people who aren’t actually there, etc
Took the voice of (and probably killed) Patient 66 the second time it encountered her
All things in mind might actually be pretty passive for a Veldigun? (didn’t kill Alex when they first entered either)

hi im sharing your third life burger king au with the masses today. any trivia you want to share about it
- fun fact about me, i know next to nothing about third life. everything i know i learned against my will bc my roommate keeps hosting third life watch parties. consequently, i kept asking them about stupid shit that happened during third life for this au and this is how i learned ren was canonically naked during the execution.
- anyway moving onto in universe fun facts ren wakes up at the hospital with no memory of anything past crowning himself the burger king, so martyn tells him that they defeated the mcdonald’s in a glorious battle where martyn shielded ren with his own body and single handedly defeated grian and scar in hand to hand combat and also burnt down the white castle in his honor
- ren believes every word he says whole heartedly despite the seemingly permanent tear tracks down martyn’s face and the complete lack of any sort of physical evidence
- meanwhile scar wakes up alone and grian does not contact him for the rest of the summer. scar could not care less and spends the rest of his summer in the burn unit pitching his new definitely-not-an-mlm to bdubs and joel because they cannot physically leave. bdubs has a great time. joel pays him three hundred dollars to leave and never come back.
- grian meanwhile has flown back to england and spends the rest of the summer attached to mumbo’s side trying to replace his newly awakened gay feelings for his manager with deranged gay feelings for mumbo. it works a little bit.
- skizz feels awful about doxxing jimmy and exposing his google+ influencer career so to make up for it he spends the rest of the summer completely wiping jimmy’s presence from the internet. this works so well that jimmy and scott have to spend the rest of their summer trying to convince their university that jimmy does in fact exist and attend their school bc skizz also wiped him from the university’s database.
- tango had a great summer. he managed to hack the skee ball machine so he gets unlimited plays for a quarter and spends the entire summer becoming a pinball wizard. impulse joins him when he recovers from the stress of trying to be a patron to both the burger king and mcdonald’s and being consequently blackmailed by both of them.
- bigb had a very peaceful summer in the library. he wouldn’t say he spent the entire summer hiding from his friends per say, but he did spend what some would call an unnecessary amount of time in the archives in the basement.
- cleo and etho are also mysteriously absent the rest of the summer, and if anyone asks no they were not in the vicinity the white castle at 5:37 on June 7th stop asking questions if you value your life.
tell the masses i said hi

I really really hope you're right, this just killed my motivation for everything. What happened with Solomare's story jar already left a bad taste in my mouth too.
I know I'll feel better in a few days, but I felt lied to when they said they'd continue the story and the app. And it's going to be even lighter and fluffier and a replacement for the main story line? One that new players will perfectly fit into? I was so looking forward to learning more about what would happen to Simeon.
Also not announcing it until last minute? For once I'm really glad I can barely afford food, because I'd be devastated if I had spent even a dollar. But maybe that's just me being poor.
I'm mostly likely going to stop writing for a while until I've archived everything important from the app, which is gonna take ages just in case anyway.
But anyway, are there any recent events you thought were better than usual? I've been too sick to grind lately so I haven't unlocked them. I want to know which ones to archive as soon as possible once the six months are up.
Sorry for bringing the mood down and the rant, but you seem to be the only positive one I follow that isn't outright calling people stupid or pathetic for being upset so I'm really hoping your positivity rubs off on me.
I do hope you keep posting for Nightbringer too! I have several issues with my hands so I don't think I'll ever be able to see the end of the og story line, and I especially love your analyses out of anyone else's.
Okay okay so they are continuing the og app and continuing the story, the only difference is they'll be continuing the mainstory in nightbringer and the og app will just be getting events. So the og app will continue the way it has since the end of s4 and new main story content will be uploaded to nightbringer (the devs did says this)
Not sure what happened with story jar but Obey Me! is solmare's most popular game. Objectively, nothing solmare has created has ever come near to reaching om! And I'm talking purely in the money making side of it - the anime? mangas? songs? merch? cons? VAs getting heavily involved in everything? Solmare's a business. As long as there's a fandom and a demand for it they're not gonna kill the og app.
Plus the majority of om's content is on the og app, with new content and old events still being released. If they wanted to kill the og app they'd stop releasing new content and updating lonely devil.
Since nightbringer will be continuing the mainstory from where they left off, they'd also need to move all of S1-4 the chats, call & devilgrams to nightbringer if they were gonna kill the og - and I'd imagine that's more hassle than it's worth
I do think we'd learn more about what happened to simeon;
• devs said they'd be continuing the main story in nightbringer so that'd include simeon
• nightbringer's current plot is about time travel and mc trying to find a way back home - so they will end up back in the current time at some point, where simeon's whole thing can be addressed
• s3 established that luke wasn't alive when the brothers were angels. If they intended to keep mc in the past they'd either have to scrap luke's entire character (?????) or retcon s3 which so far dropped the most lore
• thirteen (who's supposed to turn into a LI)'s first visit to the devildom happens in s4 and in nightbringer's op we see her in Diavolo's castle. Which means we're seeing the present timeline as well
....i think you're maybe panicking a bit too much? You definitely don't need to archive anything anytime soon. For well all of the reasons I mentioned above.... Maybe someday you'd have to but definitely not right now
Honestly I liked all the events🤷
No worries! And Yeah I think the thing people are forgetting is that Nightbringer is STILL Obey Me! I'm definitely going to be still talking about it
Ok so I have an exam in 2 days and I think I've answered every possible question about Nightbringer you could possibly have so I'm calling it here.
Won't be answering new asks until sunday. Everything posted will be from queue.
If you want to see my others asks/answers regarding Nighbringer just hit the tag on this post

Just FYI. This is from an anon on thewales Tumblr blog, referencing a recent article in the Herald Sun (AU), "Spiced Up Her Life". It's a quote by Sam Cohen regarding the challenge to find a replacement private secretary for the Sux:
"I was only supposed to stay for six months but stayed for 18 – we couldn’t find a replacement for me and when we did we took them on tour to Africa with Harry and Meghan to show them the ropes but they left (quit) as well while in Africa,” she said.
The full article is behind a paywall. The Telegraph UK has written about the article too, but also behind a paywall. You don't have to post this since I grabbed it from another blog, but thought you'd like the quote for your records.
Here is the Telegraph's article anon mentions:

Here is the OG Herald Sun article, but it's behind a paywall and I've not been able to get an archive link.

T Squad; An Edited List
Important Things to Know:
All of Tea Squad, part is the 713th battalion, is assigned to the Coruscant Temple after the events with Ahsoka’s trial. They are technically part of the Corrie Guard, but focused on General/Tubie General defense rather than politicians and crime
The 713th is almost 80% made of Speedies. The speedies were trained by an Alpha- he was called Aiwha- and IDOLIZE most of the Halfsie Clones
All of T Squad is speedies, meaning they are like 2 years old.
CG VERY quickly began to work with the 713th to use the TCG(Temple Clone Guard) as a leave for the Corries, as the Corries have a similar ratio of Speedies to Halfsies because of decommissioning and reconditionings.
Both are at about 3/4 of the companies they should have. The two cycle through a battalion's worth of CG for TCG as a time. They run on a
The CC in charge of the 713th was part of Fox’s batch. CC-1011 was fast tracked to command after the Need for the 713th became known. Originally, Snake was a medic.
Fox and Snake have only had an swapped on/off shift once, too paranoid about the consequences. (Until the stuff with Ceremony goes down)
713th Companies are: Archives, Fountains, Towers, and Creche Companies.
Towers Company focused on defense of the 5 large towers.
Fountain Company is for defense of the bulk of the main temple, the majority just like the Room of a Thousand Fountains best
Archive Company is focused on defense of both the archives, and the Under levels.
Creche Company is the code name for the mixed company of Corrie Guards and 713th who are on break shift, thier version of leave, and is thus an ever cycling group. They also tend to hang around the Creche and are much beloved by them.
Corrie Guard is also known as 1st Battalion/Home Guard.
Later, Caff(a halfsie clone), Tisane(a speedie medic), Tincture(Tisane’s medic assistant) and Nightcap (a halfsie clone who is from Krell’s battalion) join.
The OG Members of Tea Squad/T Squad
CC 13-8-0526, AKA Sergeant Teapot, they/he, is a Speedie. Teapot is in-charge of a squad in Archive. Teapot’s idol is Commander Cody/CC-2224, after he said one (1) time on Kamino “Nice planning, Tubie.” And its gotten worse since.
CT-13-2639, AKA Oolong, pronouns they/them. Oolong is among the most curious of T-Squad. Oolong also can’t hit the broad side of a starship with a blaster…No one knows how they survived training on Kamino, and Oolong just smirks when people ask.
CT 11-2-2053, AKA Teacup, they/she is second in command. Teacup was in fact voted into the spot because its funny. Teacup is a “short model” (as in 2 inches shorted than most clones). Yes T Squad teases them for it. She makes them take laps through the temple for it.
CT-34-9-8873 AKA Leaf, he/him. basically a little Dogma, but mixed with rules lawyering. Commander Snake loves him dearly.
CT-77-8-8777, AKA Meditate he/she, calls the grouping of Ceremony, Reverie and her "triple 7"
CT-13-1-3777, AKA Ceremony, they/them, Ceremony is HIGHLY interested in Jedi beliefs, and the tenets of the Jedi Order. Ceremony secretly hopes to join the Jedi EduCorps after the war.
CT-77-7-7770, AKA Reverie, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pronouns, a silly goose who could care less about the war. Reverie is constantly reading and daydreaming. *Note that in the OG post "Brew" replaced the name Reverie, but Reverie refused to have that name.
CT-20-1-3419, AKA Chip, she/her, information specialists. Very good at sneaky, has a guilty pleasure of writing romanance novels.
CT-47-4567, AKA Matcha, she/her, Chip's editor of the romanance novel. Matcha and Yerba are twins, technically. They have the seeming "twin telepathy"
CT-47-4568, AKA Yerba, he/him, Yerba is a contraband enthusist... meaning he makes moonshine, because the normal troopers try and keep the speedies from drinking alcohol.
Other fun info: Aiwha still loves to freak the 713th out but randomly appearing on Coruscant. The Creche loves him.
T squad eventually becomes part of a oversized squad (14 instead of 9 troopers,) due to Senate bullcrap.
JT-F8, the tea droid, has become very fond of all of the Archives Battalion, but also has begun to record the Clone Troopers, and so have many of the JTs. Tea/T Squad is just the one that F8 claimed.

The High Way to Hell (Take This to Your Grave) Chapter 11:
Dead on Arrival (part 1)
revised as of 9/13/2023
patch notes are listed below:
Waking scene made more realistic
Patrick mocks rich people
APPARENTLY THE PAST TENSE OF THE VERB “to exorcise” IS EXORCIZED?!?!?! WITH A Z?!?!?!
Clarified some strange pronouns by changing the OG meaning and making the peterick sweeter
Removed term “junkie”
Removed random amnesia patrick had re: pete’s powers
Removed “chirped” as a dialogue tag for obvious reasons
Replaced “working girl” with “waitress” as I have no idea why it didn’t say that from the start???
Restructured paragraphs to fit flow of story better
Retconned this with correct in universe mythology
Removed the phrase “Mad with grief” from the daily vocab of a young adult in the 21st century
Removed direct nazi verbiage because i’m no longer 16 and no longer thing people need everything spoonfed
Andy gets to use more expletives
Added in jab about patrick’s housekeeping (or lack thereof)
Removed some sentiment at the end of joe’s section that didn’t fit the tone
Tried rewording some concepts to make them more clear
Lmao did y’all remember I included the contemporary mayor of chicago in this fic? High school me was wild for that one
Once again matched Pete’s powers to current cannon rather than fast and loose as I did in the first season
Only use “superiority” as a descriptor once within a sentence rather than twice

[VD: A Magnus Archives animation done in orange and teal titled "Pusryčiai". Mellow music plays as Martin cracks two eggs into a frying pan. He turns away to throw the shells while the pan sizzles, and when he returns with a spatula, a "boom" sound effect plays as Martin recoils with comic disgust.
The egg yolks have been replaced by staring human eyes. Martin pokes at the egg, producing a squelching sound, and then one of the eyes blinks with another wet sound. Martin goes from disgusted to comically sad and disappointed, and he fades away before the setting does. The video ends on the words "darė Skaistė" and a quick shot of an eyeball. End VD]
Edit: OP kindly added this ID to the og post, so please go reblog from them instead!!
"breakfast" a tma s5 animation thing
dawg can't even fry me an egg in this eyeconomy

Sorry, but... you know your old Fukurodani art? I can't see them, I don't know why, um. Do you know why? Sorry.
Hi, anon! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ mew here—tysm for asking! 💝
Many yrs ago, when the 2018 NSFW Purge occurred, I was one of many artists who decided to remove their art from this site. I managed to remove/archive the few NSFW pieces I had posted, but some of my SFW posts got hit by the poorly coded algo tumblr had deployed at the time. It was a mess and rly dinged my confidence back then in how this place was being run, and I had quite a bit of art posted in my few yrs here (I joined in 2015). 👀
I did not delete any posts, but I did remove all images and replace them with the tumblr t, so that I could keep track of things (like notes). And everything lives on my main pillowfort actually! (*'▽'*) I've had that account since a little before that purge and started using it in earnest bc of that, *lol*, but pfio's grown to be my home. In fact, it's to the point that I even have a second acct, a side fort ;3, for my fanfic and writing things in general. pfio is wonderful!
Anyway, any Fukurodani art posts (like all my art posts) have links to their pfio posts. So you prolly aren't seeing it in the OG post on tumblr...but you should absolutely be able to view it over on pfio! (In fact, here are some of them.) If you are having any trouble accessing pfio and/or are curious to learn more about it (maybe you or my other fans of my art/fic would love some invite keys? I have plenty!), pls just ask me! Esp if it's a site bug you're encountering, I'll let pfio staff know; it's a smol dev team, but they're rly awesome about communicating with the pfio userbase. ✌︎('ω')✌︎
Tl;dr: My art (both old and new) is only on pillowfort. Additionally, I stopped crossposting/linking to my art on tumblr last yr bc I rly hate how link embeds work nowadays, *lol*. But I have so much art on pfio—pls come join me and many other fun and talented peeps in the fort! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

So, I've been working on a semi-rewrite of one of my older (unfinished) multi-chapter fics. The fic as a whole is a bit of a rewrite of canon in which, during the period between QfaD and TQfV/TAR, Varian develops psychosis. It's a bit of a character exploration that tackles the potential long-term psychological effect living in isolation would have on Varian, especially given the specifics of his situation. The first two chapters of the rewrite are out, and more are coming soon.
This fic has a lot of changes and a lot of repeat chapters, but for returning readers and fans of the OG fic, here's a list of what to expect:
I basically changed everything in the fic to third person
I changed some of the demons (name changes, manifestation changes, fusing a few demons together, taking some demons out entirely, and adding one or two completely new demons)
I replaced the first two chapters with five entirely new and original chapters, pretty much all of which are dedicated to fleshing out a different demon
Chapters 3 & 4 (of the OG) have flipped their order so that "Following Your Heart, But Your Heart is Wrong" comes before "The Cage of Our Minds"
FYHBYHiW has Varian's part taken out and is replaced with a completely new section
TCoOM has been mostly rewritten, but still keeps the same basic premise
There is a new section in "The Definition of Hiding" that replaces Varian's flashback sequences, and Rapunzel's dream sequence has had a light rewrite in both that chapter and "Take my Hand and Don't Let Go"
"A Hurt Beyond Pain" has been rewritten to be longer and more fleshed out/scary
"Monsters are my Only Friends" is getting a pretty heavy rewrite
I split "The Sinner is Hardly to Blame" into two parts in the OG fic because I finished the first half but was having a rough time with the second. This time, I will have properly finished the second half, and will fuse them together this time into one, much longer chapter
The final chapter of the fic will be all finished and will finally release
Chapters 6, 7, and 9 (of the OG) will be basically the same, but completely in third person this time.
Hope everyone likes it. I'm so excited for this. I've been waiting to finish this fic for years, and even though I'm technically rewriting a lot of it, I'm excited to finish telling the story. Who knows, I might even make a season 2 & 3 like in my original plan for the series, since I have some pretty good ideas in mind. Tell me what ya'll think, and if you like the new first two chapters.

Periodically I remember the vast amount of fanmixes I saved before streaming became more of a thing. I have so many saved for Sterek, Johnlock, Avengers and SteveTony, as well as Twilight - which was my gateway into fanmixes.
Maybe I should do (yet another) archival process of posting the tracks and covers that people made and making them available and try to find the OG posts (which may be lost to the ages now because of all the purging of sites and so on)
Anyway, I started burning CDs again because it's currently cheaper than replacing my car stereo that is NOT bluetooth able and the aux plug in is shorting out.

History of Chinese standing collars (part 1: Ming & Qing)
So, a lot of people nowadays refer to a certain type of standing collar as a “Mandarin collar” but I'm not sure if that’s legit, because standing collars throughout Chinese history looked different. I was confronted by this topic when I was writing my post on 1950s Chinese fashion and felt like I had to make a separate post. I’m gonna do a quick break down of all the different types of standing collars in historical Chinese fashion from the 16th century to the present and how they developed.
Ming Dynasty  (1368-1644)
The first mature 立领 liling standing collars were applied to women’s robes in the late 15th/early 16th century. Before any garment with a standing collar was invented, both men and women in Ming China wore garments with either a 圆领 yuanling round collar, 直领 zhiling parallel collar or 交领 jiaoling crossover collar, with crossover collars being the more common in womenswear.

The development of a standing collar was in large part thanks to the invention/adoption of the 子母扣 zimukou metal clasp button. I wonder why the fabric knotted buttons used on round collar robes were not used on standing collars in this period? They were awfully similar to the pankous of later. Anyway, at one point in the 15th century, some women thought it would be cool to add zimukou to their clothes and it resulted in this (they were also used on 比甲 bijia, 半臂 banbi and 短衫 duanshan but those are irrelevant to collars):

In the 16th century a fashion revolution took place in China: the standing collar, which came out of nowhere, began to suddenly dominate women’s clothing. This OG Chinese standing collar was very tall and form fitting, usually covering all of the wearer’s neck. It had sharp, rectangular edges and was closed by two zimukou, one placed at the bottom of the collar where it meets the bodice and another slightly above, not reaching the top of the collar. An important feature that set this apart from the collars of the 20th century is that it was unstiffened and made of the same fabric as the robe, meaning it was soft and could be worn with the top bit folded over, showing the lining which could be of a contrasting color. For archival purposes let’s call this collar style 1.
There are various theories as to why the standing collar was invented, e.g. because of colder climate during the little ice age, which peaked in the late 16th/early 17th century. Methinks it was just a fad which stayed.

Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)
This style of collar became the norm for Han Chinese women’s fashion in the mid to late 16th century and stayed that way throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. While the clothing silhouettes and accessories changed, the shape of the standing collar remained the same.

At some point in the late 18th century Han women decided it would be cool to use 盘扣 pankou, this fabric braided/knotted button of Manchu origin (more on Manchu dress later) on their collars instead of zimukou. The decoration also became more extravagant, with often rows of thick binding, piping or trim, corresponding to the decorations on the rest of the robe. It’s also slightly shorter, the upper button being at the very top of the collar. Let’s call this collar style 2.

(Presumably) late 18th century reverse glass painting showing collar style 2. The late 18th century deserves more attention, it’s such an important transitional period but also charming in its own way. This is true of European fashion of the period as well, I honestly love both places in the late 18th century.
In the beginning of the 19th century, the fashionable collar shape suddenly changed for some reason. It became extremely low, approximately only 1-2cm tall, only tall enough to accommodate one button. It still had crisp, rectangular edges. You could say this is another variation of collar style 2 but it is so iconic to the 19th century I think I’ll call this collar style 3.

Now a brief look at Manchu womenswear.  I am not an expert on Manchu historical fashion so tell me if I’m wrong. So the Manchus, who were apparently a confederation of Jurchen tribes from the area in what is northeastern China nowadays, invaded China successfully in the 1640s and remained the rulers of China until 1911 when they were replaced by the Republic of China. Throughout most of the Qing Dynasty Manchu women wore collarless robes, it was not until the mid 19th century that some Manchu women started to wear detachable collars to emulate Han women’s fashion, and not until around 1908 (!) when standing collars were actually added to their gowns themselves. Yes, period dramas did Manchu women dirty, poor gals have been dressed in the wrong costumes this, entire, time. The misrepresentation of Manchu historical fashion in the media in general is just fucking infuriating, but well, topic for a future post.

1840s/1850s court gown.  She is wearing 氅衣 changyi (the bottom part of the first character should be 衣 not 毛 but this character is so obscure that it literally DOES NOT EXIST in the Chinese language anymore omg), a more elaborate style developed in the early 19th century with slits down both sides and wide trims along the collar, cuffs, side closure, side slits and hem. I have yet to see an extant example with a standing collar, all the changyi from the 19th century I’ve seen in museum collections are collarless, so the collar seen in paintings must’ve been detachable. Maybe some Manchu women liked Han women’s fashion and wanted to wear a detachable collar. I have, however, seen Manchu women’s vests and jackets with standing collars. These were similar to late 18th century Han women’s collars, so collar style 2.

Ca. 1908. Chenyi with standing collar. If the passage of time is still not clear, notice the Western fabric used. Collar style 2.
At first glance this might look like a cheongsam but it is not. Chenyi did not have slits down the sides, unlike most 20th century cheongsam. It may have been a source of inspiration for cheongsam though, as I have explained in one of my 1930s posts, although the more obvious prototype for cheongsam was the changyi with slits and standing collars.
Let us now turn our attention to Manchu menswear, which is where things get complicated. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Manchu riding habit, 行服袍 xingfupao, was a form fitting calf length robe with form fitting long sleeves and 马蹄袖 matixiu “horse hoof cuffs”, closed at the side with pankou. It was constructed in the same method as Han Chinese clothing. This original Manchu robe was collarless----I cannot stress this enough. The Manchus did not come barging into China wearing robes with standing collars goddamnit, get your facts right period dramas.

Portrait of Emperor Kangxi in a xingfupao. This is from the early 18th century already but the style didn’t change much so you get the idea. I love this color btw I think he looks great in it.
The xingfupao was an informal riding habit and only one small part in the gigantic system of Manchu court dress, the rules of which are well documented but I don’t bother to look them up. If you would like to do that, Google 大清会典.  At one point in the early 18th century some Manchu dudes decided it was cool to add a collar to their xingfupao (like... Han women??) and it resulted in this:
Tumblr media
Source here
An early example from the Kangxi era (1661-1722), a xingfupao with a standing collar of a contrasting color. The hem is detachable for horse riding (horse riding was an important aspect of Manchu culture and that influenced many of their fashion decisions). Judging by the fur lining I assume the standing collar was added for warmth in winter? I also saw some xingfupao with fur trim attached to standing collars so maybe that was the purpose.
Standing collars on xingfupao was constructed in a similar way to Han women’s collars, with rectangular edges and closed by two buttons. Pankous, which were unique to Manchu dress, were used instead of the Han zimukou. It appears that this collar was also soft and unstiffened, so it could be worn with the top bit folded over like in ye olde times (the 16th century). It’s important to note that xingfupao with a standing collar were not common at all, maybe a 1/20 probability to see in museum collections. Construction wise it’s similar to collar style 2 but it appeared earlier and was exclusive to menswear, so let’s call it collar style 4.

Qianlong era (1735-1796) portrait, xingfupao with standing collar of the same color folded over. Collar style 4 variation 2.
Another garment with a standing collar was the dress of the officials, known by white people as “Mandarins”. From the artworks and photographs I’ve seen, the collar only appeared in the outfit with a 行服褂 xingfugua, a button down tunic with straight, wide sleeves and slits at the front, back and sides. It was usually worn in combination with xingfupao, like how a shirt and vest are fixed combinations in European menswear. However, the collar of this kind of outfit was separate from the tunic itself. A plastron with an attached collar was worn underneath the robe and tunic (completely detachable collars were also used I think??) and the collar was buttoned from the inside. Not sure if this qualifies as a standing collar at all since it isn’t even attached to the robe itself, but anyway let’s just call this collar style 5.

Oh I forgot to mention, after the Manchus took over China, they enforced their dress code on Han Chinese men but not Han Chinese women, so in the Qing Dynasty Han and Manchu menswear were one and the same but Han and Manchu womenswear were not.
I’ve only been talking about court dress so far, educated/well off civilian Han men would wear 长衫 changshan, a floor length robe, sometimes with a 马褂 magua, a short riding vest (derived from xingfugua), whereas poorer Han men would wear 短打 duanda, a short button down shirt, and pants. Well people who wore changshan also wore pants underneath but they’re not visible. All men wore pants tbh (incoming tangent), a while back when Harry Styles in a dress (which I stan) was making the rounds on social media some well meaning people were trying to find historical precedents for men wearing dresses and they named Chinese historical clothing as an example. I just wanna say, while I appreciate the sentiment, the harsh reality was that historical Han Chinese fashion was extremely gendered (except for a few brief time periods and a few select garments). Pants were reserved for men and skirts for women, the long gown like garments seen on men in historical portraiture were all robes, not dresses; you wouldn’t consider a long coat or bathrobe a dress nowadays, would you? Men always wore pants as undergarments while women wore petticoats. However I think that’s great for illustrating how our perception of whether a garment is masculine/feminine could change over time and that gender is socially constructed. Back to the main topic, to my knowledge, magua never had collars because it was a vest, changshan commonly had collars and duanda sometimes did too. I’m not sure when the standing collar began to appear on changshan, maybe when the court xingfupao gained collar style 4 it stuck in civilian fashion, maybe it was some point in the 19th century.
Anyway, fast forward to the late 19th century, the men’s changshan had a tall standing collar but again it was different to everything we’ve seen so far. It was exceptionally tall and had a smoothly tapering edge closed by only one pankou at the bottom. This resulted in a huge v shape gap down the middle. It’s still unstiffened but because of the lack of a rectangular edge it couldn’t be worn folded over. Let’s call this collar style 6.

Let’s finish this part with Han women’s collars in the 1890s and 1900s. Around this time Han womenswear began to modernize and become simpler, but that trend did not apply to collars: the collars of Han women’s robes suddenly became unnaturally tall. They were so tall that they touched the wearer’s cheeks and couldn’t be closed at the front at all, kind of resembling Regency era European men’s collars?? This style of collar was oftentimes called 元宝领 yuanbaoling, ingot collar, or 马鞍领 ma’anling, saddle collar, after the object it resembles. Let’s call all of these tall collars that touch the wearer’s face collar style 7, but bear in mind these had a lot of variations.

Photograph from the 1900s. This could be categorized as a cursed variation of collar style 6 judging from how it only has one pankou and a tapering edge instead of a rectangular edge. But like, belle époque Chinese collars are a whole other species, so let’s comfortably call it collar style 7.

More collar style 7 representation. This collar style will never stop being funny to me, like just look at it it’s so tall.
So, in summary:
Collar style 1: OG Ming Dynasty standing collar, in fashion from the 16th to mid 18th century. Tall, unstiffened, rectangular edges. Closed with two zimukou. Could have piping (17th & early 18th century). Could be worn with top bit folded over (16th & early 17th century). Worn by Han women.
Collar style 2: developed from collar style 1, popularized in the late 18th century. Medium height, unstiffened, rectangular edges. Closed with two pankou/other fabric buttons. Commonly has binding, piping or trim. Worn by Han women in the late 18th century, partially adopted by Manchu women in the late 19th century.
Collar style 3: developed from collar style 2, exclusive to the 19th century. Extremely short, unstiffened, rectangular edges. Closed with one pankou. Commonly has binding, piping or trim. Worn by Han women.
Collar style 4: collar style 2 but simpler, appeared in the late 17th/early 18th century. Tall, unstiffened, rectangular edges. Closed with two pankou. Commonly plain. Worn by Manchu & Han men.
Collar style 5: detachable standing collar, a staple of official’s uniforms throughout the Qing Dynasty. Medium height, unstiffened, rectangular/rounded edges. Buttoned from the inside. Always plain. Worn by all officials (exclusively men in this era).
Collar style 6: civilian men’s collar characterized by v shape gap at the front, I don’t know when it first appeared, some point in the Qing Dynasty. Tall, unstiffened, rounded and dramatically tapering edges. Closed by one pankou. Worn by civilian Manchu & Han men.
Collar style 7: cursed belle époque (1890s & 1900s) women’s collars that touched the wearer’s face. Extremely tall, stiffened, both rounded and rectangular edges existed. Closed by one pankou at the bottom but sometimes had more pankou for ornamental purposes. Worn by Han women in this period.
Join me next time as we dive into the Republican era where things get extra complicated.

The Magnus Archives AU?
We had an au like that a little while ago but that was actually based on the canon DSMP events. But now that we're going to actually do The Magnus Archives au but it's closer to the actual media it's based on!
We're going to get so much tragedy and angst in here!
So, first things first. I propose that the Archivist is Wilbur Soot and the Assistants are the OG L'Manberg crew. Why? Because it is missing L'Manberg hours and I want them all to bond. It is time for all of them to bond and go through terrible terrible terrible things together.
Tommy almost dying and being replaced! Tubbo getting blown up several times! Jack actually dying but not really! Fundy having his parental angst while some worms break into his apartment! Eret getting chased around by this fucking cult that keeps saying that she's the Messiah! Niki getting caught up in all of this supernatural bullshit and finding fire very interesting! And much much more!
Now then, who's going to be Elias Bitchard? Well, it's going to be Dream. He's going to be a Web and Eye guy and he's definitely not someone who you should worry about. Nope. The institute is definitely not something that is bad. Come work here. We are very friendly :)
Now then, as for the Avatars, well there are only so many we can maintain here. And I want some of them to be human (*cough cough Human Quackity with his Avatar Boyfriends *cough cough).
And besides, I kind of want to sprinkle in some of my own OCs in here because I have several of them that would definitely fit here.
Buckle up kids, there is going to be so much horror and so much angst in here.

couldn’t help overhearing your tags… you have a Big Theory for tma??? 👀👀
OK SO! I came up with the first part and my boyfriend worked with me to put together the second two thirds. It mainly involves Beholding, The Web, The Extinction, and the Magnus Institute. TLDR directly beneath the cut.
TLDR: Beholding, at the time tma takes place and since approximately the founding of the institute, is in the process of splitting in two: one branch becoming the emergence of The Extinction and the other merging with The Web. Part one:
We know that The Extinction (AKA The Terrible Change, The Future Without Us, and The World Is Always Ending) has to do with exactly that: fear of a future without all that is known, of a terrible change, that all you know is continuously ending. Each of these requires something in common: a record of what has been, and what there is now; a record of that which there is to lose. Tragedy itself.
Which role do we know which deals fundamentally with tragedy, who has their very being etched with that fear, and with tragedy, and with Seeing what has happened?
The Archivist, and by extension the statements and archive, are then the role and form which The Extinction emerges from and through.
There are two potential holes in this: in 197-Connected, Annabelle says “we took his voice” in reference to Jon’s voice in the tapeweb. This will be explored more in parts two and three, but for now I’d like to call attention to her particular phrasing: his voice was taken. The statements were taken, but this doesn’t mean they were necessarily of The Web.
On a related note, if the tapes were an aspect of The Web that doesn’t line up with Gertrude’s lack of caution around them; despite her usual caution (especially regarding Beholding, cutting the eyes from the covers of all her books) it’s odd that she ignores them. Even the other major web incarnation which she interacts with, Emma Harvey, does not escape Gertrude’s notice; eventually being killed by Agnes at Gertrude’s request (also notable that the tapes have no connection to Emma, or any web avatar aside from Annabelle). Gertrude was consistently dismissive of the existence of The Future Without Us, which lines up with her lack of suspicion around the tapes.
Part two:
In episode 79: Hide and Seek, Not!them says: "I wonder, if I wear you, will I really become the Archivist? Rob the eye of its pupil?" Then, in episode 192: An Appointment, Jon says about Jonah: "Nothing. Nothing’s wrong with him. He’s the pupil of The Eye." Something happened which divorced the roles of Archivist and Pupil to The Eye which Not!them (and presumably, manifestations of other entities) was not aware of, which implies that it’s a role which they assume to have been synonymous with that of The Archivist.
Albrecht Von Closen, in 23-Swartzwald and 127-Remains to be Seen, is an acquaintance of Jonah Magnus who finds a library under a graveyard in the black forest in Germany. he describes the books there to a doctor Jonah sends, which sound a lot like 1800s and earlier Statements. Jonah steals them, replacing them with empty covers on blank sheets. The doctor believes that this caused Albrecht to become sick and die as he put the blank books back in the crypt, eyes covering his insides.
In this way, Jonah establishes The Institute through manipulation of one who was (likely) meant to be the next Archivist; making himself, as head of the Institute, The Eye's Pupil.
I will mention here that the characters aren't causing these movements in the entities necessarily; instead they are representative of societal shifts in fear; this is the case for all of them, whichever entities they are connected to.
Elias attempts The Rite of The Watcher's Crown inside the Panopticon, a prison in which the captives cannot know if they, in the moment, are under surveillance; and they are controlled through this not knowing if they are Known.
In 193-A Stern Look, OG Elias lies that his greatest fear is spiders in his interview with jonah James Wright. He then is (made to) imagine a spider crawling over his face, a foresight of his eyes being removed- and the Spider is symbolic of Jonah.
Thus, Beholding is split: half the momentary yet omnipresent surveillance of totalitarianism merged with The Web, and half becoming the Record Of The Always Changing.
Part three:
Oliver banks, in the statement of his domain in s5, believes that the entities fear their own end; this is likely projection as much as any attribution of thought is toward the entities (including The Web), but it's also as accurate as any of those other projections. The entities act according to how people feel like they should work, after all.
Simon Fairchild, in 151: Big Picture, expresses Peter Lukas' belief that The Future Without Us would leave a world in which the other entities couldn't survive. Several threads point to different forms and specificities, but a plan of The Web('s avatars) would likely be to bind itself to the Extinction; it's bound characters and beings and items before after all.
Jonah Magnus, both in 160-The Eye Opens and 200-Last Words (as well as all the terrors he babbles in the background appearances through the late part of s5), reveals his own desperate fear of his coming death. This parallels the fear which Oliver hypothesizes the other entities have toward The End, particularly The Web which might attempt to avoid this by binding itself to The Extinction (which peter had hypothesized would lead to a world which continually ended and recreated itself in order to fear another end and recreation, ad infinitum).
Ways this could've gone down with focal points: The Web trying to bind itself to The Extinction through Jon and Martin's love (either of them could represent Web and/or Extinction in different ways), through Jon killing Elias as the main roles of Web and Extinction connections to Beholding(which would leave martin, fittingly, alone in the panopticon as a callback to the s4 finale), or something else. Who knows, maybe Basira being “Detective” could have become relevant.
