The thing about better call Saul is I’m now confused as to why Mike worked with Gus, like in breaking bad Gus is different from the rest of the cartel, but in better call Saul we see that he’s more like them than he would like to believe, and I feel like Mike should see that. He might be a little scared of Gus, but Mike is someone Gus would let go, and Mike knows that, so why did he keep working for him? What is so different about him? In the beginning, I get it, but after Ziegler? After Nacho? I don’t get it; it really doesn’t seem like him. I guess he was just blinded by love and I get that I love Gus too, but come on

Me watching Victor die in Breaking Bad: "Holy shit. No one deserves that. Poor dude! Seek help, Gus."
Me watching Victor in Better Call Saul unnecessarily shoot Nacho in the side to be petty in one episode and smirk when he leaves the scene of his death in another: "I will help you hide the body, Gus."

So fucked up how every single person in Better Call Saul is doomed from the very beginning. We know that everyone working for the cartel dies in Breaking Bad. Gus, the Salamancas, Emilio, Domingo, Mike, they're all dead. Nacho never stood a chance in the first place, now he haunts the show that was set in stone when he wasn't even ink on paper. Chuck haunts the narrative even after his death, he never really leaves, does he? The cartel and the lawyers storylines had to cross over eventually, we've known that from the very beginning. Howard and Lalo getting burried under the lab Walt and Jesse cook meth in, the lab where Gus kills Victor, the lab that gets burned down. All this while their bones are in the ground, under their feet. Oh and Kim and Jimmy. Jimmy was always going to become Saul Goodman and Kim was always going to leave him at some point. It didn't matter how much they loved each other, it was never going to be a happy ending. Chuck was right, Jimmy never changed. Until he did. In the very very end. When he faced all of the consequences of his actions. The criminal-lawyer protagonist ending up in jail for the rest of his life is the perfect, poetic ending. It's just like Saul said, someone has to go to prison for all of it and that someone was always going to be Jimmy McGill. A time machine wouldn't have made a difference.

Psycho Analysis: Gus Fring
Tumblr media
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
Breaking Bad is known for its fantastic cast of characters, all of whom have some level of critical acclaim and iconic status. Seriously, go to Wikipedia and go to any character’s page from the show (basically every major character has one) and look at the “Reception” part, pretty much all of them are universally beloved. Chief among that crowd is the only villain in the show to give our rascally villain protagonist Walt a run for his money, the criminal mastermind that is Gustavo “Gus” Fring.
If you think I’m going to do anything other than add to those heaps of praise, you’re surely mistaken; I love Gus as much as anyone else who has seen the show. But where most are willing to overlook certain aspects of the character that don’t work so well because he is cool and gay, I acknowledge those flaws and love Gus anyway. We are not the same.
Motivation/Goals: Gus is a businessman, plain and simple. Be it Los Pollos Hermanos or his secret meth business, Gus wants perfection in every aspect of his professional life. That being said, he’s a pretty fair boss, and if you pull your weight you will be rewarded; he treats his employees at Los Pollos Hermanos so well that you know the show takes place in a fantasy world, because no boss is that nice. And he was way too lenient with Walt all throughout that man’s career working with him.
Of course, Gus is also driven by revenge. Don Eladio, Hector Salamanca, and the rest of the cartel are responsible for the death of his lover Max, and Gus refuses to rest until the entire operation has crumbled, with only him left standing tall and Hecor lefty broken and crippled to be finished off last as he’s the one who pulled the trigger. It’s a very classic villain motivation, and it helps give a little bit of sympathy to a character who is otherwise too cold and mysterious to really delve into the mind of. At any rate, it makes it very easy to root for Gus and cheer him on as he plays his supposed superiors for suckers and orchestrates their downfalls all while coming up with dozens of plans to cover his own ass.
Performance: Giancarlo Esposito has such an air of elegance and menace to him when he’s playing Gus. You can really see why he man ended up typecast after this, playing cunning antagonists, because he really kills it here. He does have one incredibly major flaw, though: He’s not a native Spanish speaker like Gus is. This leads to pretty much any point where Gus is required to speak the language falling flat, especially since most of the time he’s up against actors who are actually fluent and even if you’re not a native speaker you can pick up on how clunky he is in comparison to Michael Mando or Tony Dalton.
Final Fate: Gustavo Fring got outplayed by both Walter and Hector, and the result is perhaps one of the single greatest villain deaths of all time.
youtube
As many have pointed out, it is genuinely hilarious how Gus hated Hector so fucking much that he refused to die in the same room as him. And hey, maybe this isn’t very accurate to how a person would realistically look after taking an explosion directly to the face… But it’s one hell of a cool visual. Sometimes it’s better to check realism at the door for the sake of symbolism and cool prosthetic gore.
Best Scene: I think it is genuinely hard to top Gus’ awesome moments, even if he doesn’t ever really get an entire episode of focus. I think his crowning moment, the moment where we as an audience and Walt as a character learn that us is not even remotely fucking around, is his silent preparations before he comes up to his lackey Victor and violently slits his throat in “Box Cutter,” before equally silently getting dressed once more. Right before leaving, he simply says, “Get back to work” before leaving a stunned Walt, Mike, and Jesse behind.
youtube
There’s also Gus taking down Don Eladio and all his capos in “Salud.” It’s such wonderful, beautiful vengeance, and it’s all made better by the fact Gus poisoned himself, went to the bathroom, neatly placed a towel on the floor and knelt down on it, and then induced vomiting. This man would pick the fruitiest way imaginable to save his own life.
youtube
Finally, there is his scene in “Fun and Games,” the first and only time we see Gus just out enjoying himself. We get to see him pretty obviously flirting with a sommelier, but as soon as the man leaves for a moment Gus makes the decision to commit himself fully to his mission and rule out the possibility of love again after what happened to Max. This is the moment where we see Gus fully become the man we know him as in Breaking Bad, and it’s honestly pretty tragic. He could have been happy if he’d just let go some of his hate, and maybe he’d even still be alive.
youtube
Final Thoughts & Score: Gus is one of the best villains ever to grave television, and considering he’s in a show filled to the brim with some of the greatest villains ever devised, that’s really saying something.
Part of what makes him so genuinely great is just how utterly unknowable he is. Over the course of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he is almost like a god of the criminal underworld, untouchable and mysterious. What very little tidbits we get of his past paint a conflicting picture that could mean any number of things, and at every other point he manages to command respect and fear from all those around him, with those not wise enough to do so ending up dead by his masterful machinations. It ultimately makes the single scene where we see him not doing business, the one where he flirts with the man at the bar, so much more impactful. We see that Gus has rejected his humanity, his chance at ever being happy again, so that he can be consumed by his work and his vengeance. Gus is what he is by choice.
It’s why, even if it’s not really “good” that Walt won, it is so satisfying and cathartic. Gus spends his screentime pulling off superhuman schemes and feats of vengeance, orchestrating the deaths of the entire Salamanca family and his own cartel superiors, and yet he is done in by an absolute bumbling buffoon of a criminal like Walt. It’s a classic case of David and Goliath, with the untouchable adversary being taken down due to viewing his foe as so far beneath him that he didn’t realize he was screwed until it was too late. Gus was sadly too smart for his own good, never bothering to consider the erratic chemistry teacher could ever pull off anything big enough to defeat him.
With all that, Gus gets a 10/10. With how much I love Gus and how I consider him one of my favorite villains ever, you might be wondering why I didn’t bump him up to a 10.5 to denote him being a cut above the garden variety 10. Well, Gus has one issue with his character that I feels really hampers him in crucial moments: His inability to speak Spanish. Giancarlo Esposito, despite being an absolutely fantastic actor in every other regard, does not speak Spanish and needs his lines given to him phonetically. Native speakers have called his accent stilted and unnatural, and it has led to moments that should be epic and powerful such as his monologue to Lalo before killing him becoming nonsensical gibberish to trained ears. Considering that character is a native Spanish speaker, this is an absolutely unforgivable and glaring flaw. It certainly doesn’t ruin the character, but it does hold him back just a little bit.
But it really does speak volumes that as soon as Gus is taken out, the quality of the villains just plummets. The final season has Walt facing off against a bunch of Nazis and fucking Lydia, the annoying businesswoman. The final season is still peak, but boy are those villains living in Gus’ shadow. In spite of his flaws (or, well, his singular but rather major flaw), he’s still one of the greatest villains in television history, and is up there with Walt and Saul as the greatest villains in the series.

It does make Jesse make sense though. Because I always didn’t quite buy Gus deciding he wanted Jessie in Breaking Bad. Using him to get Walt out of the way, maybe. But Jesse was the first one he was mad at. He was the addict he couldn’t trust. He was the one to break rank, and he was the one to kill Gale. Use against Walt, sure. But /want/? Not temporarily, but like, forgive? Want to keep? Make one of the two men on his revenge quest at a compound? And when Jessie asked what he sees, Mike says, “loyalty, I guess.” Loyalty.
But that’s never mattered to him before. Victor was loyal. Victor would have died for Gus, and he killed him for no reason. It had to be more specific than that.
But after Rock and a Hard Place, it makes perfect sense. After that monumental fear of being destroyed by the person in front of you with every reason to do it, who you’ve forced into the most horrific moment, who you’ve abandoned and used and forced to die, not just not taking you down, but saving you, above and beyond. Dying the way he died.
I think it’s the /only/ time in the show outside of losing his love, that I’ve ever seen Gus truly shaken. He doesn’t think he fucked up when Mike argues about Werner. He doesn’t about Victor, or any of the other countless sacrifices and chess moves and deaths. Never when Mike tries to save Ignacio, does Gus accept a single point. Never. But when he dies, he realizes exactly what he wasted.
If he saw loyalty, it wouldn’t matter, but if he saw Ignacio Varga again, it would.

Rejected Bad: Gastro
The following is a rejected script from an early season of Breaking Bad.
INT. LOS POLLOS HERMANOS - DAY
The sun shines brightly on Los Pollos Hermanos as customers line up outside, eager to taste the famous fried chicken. Inside the restaurant, GUS FRING stands behind the counter, observing the chaos.
GUS:  (whispering to himself)  It's never easy, is it?
Suddenly, VICTOR stumbles into the restaurant, pale and disoriented.
VICTOR:  (Groaning)  Oh, man, this Gastro is killing me!
GUS rushes over to help VICTOR, concerned.
GUS:  What happened, Victor? We can't afford to lose customers today.
VICTOR:  I don't know, Gus. Just woke up this morning feeling like I got hit by a banana truck.
GUS looks outside the window and sees an angry MOB OF TOWNSFOLK chanting and carrying signs.
MOB MEMBER #1:  (angry)  We won't stand for your shenanigans, Gus! We demand answers!
GUS rushes to the door and addresses the crowd, attempting to calm them down.
GUS:  Please, everybody, listen to me. There's been a misunderstanding. I assure you we are doing everything within our capability to address your concerns.
MOB MEMBER #2:  (sarcastically)  Oh yeah? Where's that dancin’ fool Victor? He too sick to prance around now?
GUS turns back to see VICTOR barely holding himself up against the counter.
GUS:  (intensely)  Victor... I know you're not feeling well, but we need you out there. Go, put on that costume, and dance. They need to hear the truth.
VICTOR hesitates, clutching his stomach in pain.
VICTOR:  Gus, I can't even stand straight. I don't think I can make it.
GUS's face softens, realising the severity of the situation.
GUS:  (sincerely)  Victor, I understand you're unwell, but this is bigger than both of us. Our reputation is on the line. Los Pollos Hermanos is more than just a fast-food joint. It's a symbol of our commitment to this community. I need you to dig deep and find a way.
VICTOR sighs, defeated, but determined to prove his loyalty.
VICTOR:  Alright, Gus. I'll do it for you and Los Pollos Hermanos.
EXT. LOS POLLOS HERMANOS - DAY
VICTOR, barely able to walk, steps outside wearing the hip-hop ballet dance costume. The MOB instantly falls silent, watching him intently.
VICTOR gathers every ounce of strength and begins to dance, though with less energy than usual. He pushes through the pain and continues to perform, albeit slower and with less spirit.
The MOB, initially hostile, becomes captivated by VICTOR's perseverance. They start to cheer, slowly replacing their anger with curiosity.
VICTOR finishes his performance, his face pale and sweat-drenched. The crowd erupts into applause, clearly moved by his dedication.
MOB MEMBER #3:  (whispering, impressed)  He danced for us, even when he's sick. That takes real guts.
GUS steps forward, seizing the opportunity to address the crowd.
GUS:  (loudly)  Thank you all for your understanding. We appreciate your patience and will make every effort to answer your concerns. Los Pollos Hermanos is committed to serving this community.
With the tension diffused, the crowd disperses, leaving VICTOR panting, leaning against the restaurant's wall. GUS approaches VICTOR, placing a hand on his shoulder.
GUS:  (softly)  You've proven your loyalty, Victor. I'm proud of you.
VICTOR manages a weak smile, grateful for GUS's support.
FADE OUT.

thinking about how we’ve never (if i’m remembering correctly) witnessed any truly horrendous acts of violence committed by lalo. obviously his violence is a part of the story, but 1) the hotelier that he and hector tortured was not show in a flashback— this story was only relayed to us as a fond memory, 2) we see lalo pull his gun on fred at the travel wire, and then later we see him dead on the floor but we didn’t see the actual murder, and 3) lalo brandishes the scissors before he kills sylvia and matteo, but once again he don’t actually witness the murder itself. the only time i think we actually witness any violence from lalo is when he’s attacked in his home and has to defend himself.
i remember seeing gus commit a despicable act of violence for the first time (see: victor and the box cutter), and how shocking and incredible it was to see all of his menace finally corroborated. sure, before that he had some people killed and his capacity for violence was implicit. but it wasn’t until that violence was actually shown on screen that walt, jesse (though i think jesse actually understood a little more at this point), and us as an audience could fully comprehend how wonderfully horrible and ruthless gus was. it’s one of the best scenes in breaking bad, hands down.
my point is, i wonder if they’re gonna do something similar with lalo. we know he’s horrible, we know he’s ruthless— that’s a given. they’ve told us that over and over, but soon enough it’ll be time to actually show it, no more cuts before the gruesomeness. when we finally see lalo commit an act of unabated violence on screen, i hope that it’s every bit as intense as the box cutter scene and i hope that it makes me want to vomit.

I forgot how diabolical it is when Gus kills Victor in Breaking Bad … he’s seriously a maniac. Picturing a conversation between Mike and Gus following that is interesting now thanks to Better Call Saul.
Of course no conversation happened right away since Gus just said “get back to work” and left like nothing happened.

Chapter 5 – Victor is trying to keep it together so he goes to talk to his only friend in Storybrooke, Jefferson. During their conversation, he finds out Regina has her vault. He desperately wants Jefferson to break in with him but will Jefferson who just got his daughter back help him? In the Enchanted Forest, Aurora is realizing her waking life may be worse then her dream curse.
Chapter 6 – Jefferson takes Grace to school before his planned meeting with Victor. He quickly realizes walking through town now that the curse is broken is the not the smartest thing for him to do. He runs into more than one person he would be happy never to see again in his life. In the Enchanted Forest Aurora and Emma discuss past loves, before they arrive at Snow’s Castle to find the magical wardrobe and a way back to Storybrooke.
Chapter 7 – On his way to meet Victor Jefferson runs into Rumple. While in the Enchanted Forest Aurora meets Cora for the first time.

Chapter 9 – Aurora finally falls asleep and renters the dream curse. It seems to feed on her memories and fears even more before giving away to flames.  Jefferson still mad from the fall out of Victor’s idea of breaking into Regina’s vault stumbles on King George yet again. Will he seek Rumple’s employment again as a way to protect himself and Grace?
Chapter 10 – Having convinced Phillip the best way to help Snow and Emma return to Storybrooke is to go to the Dark One’s Castle the group starts the journey only to encounter more of Cora’s destruction and a villain from Aurora’s past. Back in Storybrooke, Jefferson is avoiding Victor after their fight, and trying to figure out how best to complete the task Rumple has assigned him. Victor unable to contract Jefferson makes one bad mistake after another.
Chapter 11 – Aurora and Phillip are leading the way to the Dark One’s Castle to find out more about this magical compass to send Emma and Snow back to Storybrooke when Cora sends a deadly distraction. Back in Storybrooke Victor isn’t the only one affected by his action of bringing Daniel back to life.
Chapter 12 -  Aurora starts searching the Dark Ones Castle for information on the magical compass Hook’s had informed them of.  Her search turns up only painful questions and an unexpected visitor who has taken up residence at the Castle.  Back in Storybrooke Victor receives an expected visitor from his world. One he would have been completely happy to never see again.
Chapter 13 – Aurora’s nightmare gives away to the burning red room again, only this time she is not alone. She meets Henry but before she could give much information to him she is pulled out of the dream world. Back in Storybrooke Henry lets Rumple and Regina know he met someone else in the burning red room. Victor gets called in by the Storybrooke Medical Examiner (Dr. Van Helsing) to look at a possible werewolf victim. At school Henry goes to Grace for help with her knowledge of the Enchanted Forest’s past.
Chapter 14 – Jefferson is trying to embrace working for Rumple again. Between the dwarfs’ news, a murder scene, and Victor’s involvement with the Storybrooke Medical Examiner who just happens to be Dr. Van Helsing, he has more than enough information to keep Rumple well informed. Rumple may be pleased to have Jefferson back in his good graces but Regina is not. Victor who has been pulled unwilling into a possible werewolf murder case becomes determined to prove it is King George behind the murder, not Ruby. Henry and Grace compare storybooks and get a shock in the process.  Back in the Enchanted Forest Snow misses Henry in the burning red room and Aurora believes she has found information needed to find the compass they seek.
Chapter 15- Aurora informs Snow and Emma where to go to find the magical compass they need to get back to Storybrooke. Phillip convinces everyone it is best to split up with Snow, Emma, Mulan, and Robin going to find the compass while he, Aurora, and Percival head back to restore Aurora’s Castle for her Coronation. Mulan questions Phillip’s actions but agrees to stick to the plan they had formed during the cursed years. Back in Storybrooke Victor believes he has helped save Ruby’s life and promises to use his Science to keep King George locked up and away from her forever. But it seems King George has formed an unlikely alliance and if things go the way he has planned he won’t only soon be a free man but every supernatural creature in Storybrooke’s days will be numbered.
Chapter 16 – Aurora and Percival deal with painful memories of their young lives at the castle, while preparing for Aurora’s Coronation.  In Storybrooke Henry tries to stop Regina from destroying Grace’s storybooks. Jefferson and Victor find out King George’s evil plans were more thought out then they all believed, and the question is can Victor’s Science find something to link George to Gus’s murder and keep George behind bars?
Chapter 17- Victor confronts Van Helsing about the evidence from Gus’s murder, but the outcome of the test results is not to his or Ruby’s liking.  Back in the Enchanted Forest Aurora is finally crown Queen of her Queen of her Kingdom but Phillip finds a way to steal her crowning moment.
Chapter 18 - Aurora takes time out of the planning of the wedding to challenge one of Phillip’s ruling decisions. Emma tries to convince her to run away but their plan doesn’t go the way Emma had hoped. Back in Storybrooke, Jefferson starts to grow concerned about more than just his and his daughter’s welfare, and Henry can’t believe the mistakes the so-called grow up defenders of the town are about to make.
Chapter 19 – King George newly released from jail meets up with Van Helsing to see how the plan of testing supernatural creatures to find a way to tag them for future use, is going. After the latest science experiments end in death, Van Helsing reassures George he has what he needs to move forward with their plan. David decides he can’t risk Henry any longer and he will enter the dream curse world to find Snow and give her and Emma away back home to Storybrooke. Jefferson, who had just had a run-in with some from his past, is having a hard time with people underestimating just how big of a threat George really is. Back in the Enchanted Forest Emma’s plan for Aurora to escape the castle before the wedding backfired and Aurora finds herself trying one last desperate action before she walks down the aisle to Phillip.
Chapter 20 – Emma conversation with her mother opens her eyes to the truth, and the question is can she stop Aurora in time before she marries Phillip? Hook takes advantage of the Royal Wedding to sneak into Aurora’s bedroom and steal a gift for Cora which will get her back in his favor. While In Storybrooke Henry goes to Jefferson for help to stop his Grandfather from entering the dream curse but Jefferson isn’t too willing to help.
Chapter 21-  With some help from Archie, Ruby, and Granny, Victor finally puts together a theory about the missing townspeople.  Jefferson confronts Regina and Rumple and only finds himself being dragged into the mess he wants to avoid. Aurora tries to keep her own control after Hook has taken her heart, but her life only seems to be finding ways to become worse.
Chapter 22 –Victor makes Ruby an offer she doesn’t think she could ever turn down, that is until she finds out just who he really is. Worried that Emma and Snow won’t be the ones coming through the portal Regina and Rumple moved to stop anyone from entering Storybrooke. Can Henry and Ruby convince Jefferson to do the right thing and allow Emma and Snow to have a least a chance? Back in the Enchanted Forest Cora uses Aurora to get the compass but who will make it through the portal she opens?
Chapter 23 – OMG the chapter is finally here! Aurora’s gone through the portal, Jefferson is on the other side.  What will their reunion be like? What will Rumple and Regina do about it? How relieved will Victor be to find out his invention didn’t lead to Aurora’s death?
Chapter 24 -   Victor goes down to the waiting room to bring Jefferson up to Aurora’s hospital room, but Jefferson’s current state of guilt and lack of confidence may not allow him to go to see her.  Van Helsing learns about Aurora’s arrival and decides it may be a good chance to test something he was working for King George.
Chapter 25 – Jefferson is torn between what he wants to do and what he feels he should do as he comes to terms with the fact that Aurora is really alive and in Storybrooke. His encounter with Regina doesn’t help him feel better about his decision either way. At the hospital, Victor runs some test to calm Aurora’s nerves as she complains something is right with her. While Aurora is resting Ruby and Victor have a moment where they both confess things they would rather not share about their past before Ruby agrees to let him try to find a cure for her werewolf curse. Unknown to everyone else Cora and Hook arrive in Storybooke.
Chapter 26 – Jefferson’s memories of his happier times with Aurora torture him as he tries to get up the nerve to go for this second chance he has been given.  Van Helsing goes to King George with value information on Aurora and Phillip which could aide their quest to destroy magic and all magic creatures.
Chapter 27 -  Victor borrows some magical books from Jefferson to hopefully aide his research to help cure Ruby. He tells Jefferson he should use all the magical items Regina brought over to this world to help him find time to be alone with Aurora. Jefferson decides to take the second chance he appears to have been given, but before Aurora could get his message, Rumple decides to call on her.
Chapter 28 – Jefferson finally has gotten Aurora alone to talk about all that has happened over the last thirty-eight years since they each thought the other had died. Will he take Victor’s advice and see if his kiss will bring back Aurora’s magic or will be weak like Rumple was all those years with Belle?
Chapter 29 – True Love’s Kiss has brought back Aurora’s magic, but Jefferson and she are still stuck in the same situation they have always been. With Hook still controlling her heart can she and Jefferson ever have a chance at a happy ending?
Chapter 30 – Jefferson and Aurora are both distressed about how their private conversation went, but Jefferson had his daughter to take care of, and Belle and Ruby found Aurora.  Can Belle and Ruby get Aurora settled down and cleaned up before the sleeping powder wears off?  King George is on the looking for any chance of a private conversation with Phillip, but if they do find the time to talk who will be using whom?
Chapter 31 – Ruby’s kiss has taken away Victor’s worries of if his Science can keep the fact that Jefferson’s kiss has returned Aurora’s magic, from Rumple.  But Aurora still must face a clearly angry Dark One on her own. When her temper flares will she be able to hold back her magic?  The next morning Phillip meets with King George and learns some shocking news about his family’s connection to Jefferson.
Chapter 32 – Grace’s meeting with Aurora doesn’t go as she hopes causing Jefferson to have to deal with the aftermath. Phillip learns more about Jefferson from King George, which he shares with Mulan. Victor was hoping to discuss what was going on between him and Ruby, but any chance of getting her alone is forgotten when he learns Doctor Hopper has been murdered.
Chapter 33 -  Victor finally gets a chance to talk to Ruby, but Granny isn’t to thrill to find out how close they have gotten since the curse broke. Van Helsing uses the distraction to step up phase two of his and King George’s plan.  Most people in town are attending Doctor Hopper’s funeral, so Aurora uses it to her advantage to take Grace’s storybook back to her and Jefferson, even if she is worried about how their conversation will go after how she left things at his manor the last time she was there.
Chapter 34 – Hook once again takes control of Aurora’s Heart to change the course of her conversation with Jefferson.  Victor brings Jefferson the bad news that Cora and Hook have made it Storybrooke, and there will be a town meeting that night. A meeting that Rumple request they both attend. George and Van Helsing have put phase one of their plan into action and are waiting to see its effects.
Chapter 35 -  Rumple talks Jefferson into coming to the town meeting, but with Phillip and Regina in attendance, he has no idea how much he is going to regret attending. At the hospital, Victor is dealing with an overwhelming number of sick Fairies. He must call in Van Helsing to cover while he leaves for the meeting, little did he know Van Helsing’s is right where he wants to be to document the effects of his virus which only effects Supernatural creatures.
Chapter 36 -   Now that Aurora used her magic to help save Jefferson, they must deal with the consequences of everyone knowing they kissed and her magic has returned. Phillip doesn’t handle Aurora’s new-found confidence well. After the town meeting, Robin feels drawn to Regina but their conversation doesn’t go as he plans.
Chapter 37- Victor had promised to look after Aurora so he brings her to the hospital to check on the sick Fairies. What she sees reminds her of how Maleficent killed the Fairies who were guarding her as a child. Will her knowledge of what she did them help Victor find a way to cure Blue and the others? With Victor busy Aurora’s decides to finally take the matter into her own hands but will Rumple be able to stop her from starting down a dark path or not?
Chapter 38- Both Aurora and Jefferson are trying to cope with their current life choices, as Victor tries to move forward with his relationship with Ruby.
Chapter 39 – Aurora joins, Emma, Belle, Ruby, and Ashley for a girl’s night out, while Victor tries to talk some sense into this friend at the Rabbit Hole. But a drunken Jefferson only seems to want to play up his Mad Hatter Stereotype, only allowing it to continue if they use song lyrics. While King George and Van Helsing is getting ready to act on their next set of plans to take care of not only Jefferson and Rumple, but all the magical creatures in Storybrooke.
Chapter 40 – Jefferson and Victor’s now drunken conversation is interrupted by Van Helsing who sets them up for King George to attack and get what he needs to set his revenge in motion. While Aurora continues to try to have a good time on her girl’s night out with Emma, Ashely, and Ruby.
Chapter 41-  Everyone is feeling the aftereffects of a night of drinking. Emma and Ruby convince a drunken Aurora to go talk to Jefferson. She appears up at his mansion and the two have a heated but long overdue heart to heart. While Van Helsing slips something in Victor’s tea to learn more about what is going in Storybrooke, to help King George and his plan to put an end to supernatural creatures once and for all.
Chapter 42 – Aurora wakes from a nightmare caused by her time in the Sleeping Curse. Jefferson sees first hand how much the curse has affected her and how much he can relate to her confusion over what is real and what is only in her head. As the conversation plays he starts to wonder if Victor is right, that he and Aurora could have a future together no matter what Rumple or anyone else thinks or believes. The only question is, is he strong enough after everything he has been through to actually go for the happy ending he wants.
Chapter 43 -   Hook uses Aurora to confront Rumple at the Townline. Will everyone survive his deadly game.
Chapter 44 – Jefferson confronts Emma about sending a drunk Aurora up to his house and learns Emma’s father isn’t who he thinks he is. Hook continues to press his luck and try to use Aurora to hurt Rumple. Will he be successful this time or will Aurora finally get her control of her life back? Ruby goes to bring Victor to the hospital to help with Belle, while Van Helsing is sneaking around Victor’s Lab looking for his information on Ruby and the Faries.
Chapter 45 – Jefferson surprises Aurora with a date. He learns Rumple will be leaving with Emma and Henry to go find Baelfire, his half brother.  Believing Rumple has already left town he breaks into the Pawn Shop to find something for end the aftereffects of Aurora’s Sleeping Curse. His visit does not go as planned. Victor’s memories of his past continue to haunt him as he looks for a way to Scientific bring back Belle’s memories. Robin sees a clearly jealous Regina, who is watching Aurora and Jefferson from afar. After his encounter with her, he wonders how he can make her realize the curse being broken is a blessing for everyone, including her. King George calls Van Helsing ready to make his next move to make sure the Hatter’s life is ruined forever.

Ultimately, however, the fact that metástasis is SO faithful to Breaking Bad makes it extremely easy to see that it's not very good because its understanding of Breaking Bad only extends to the literal events that happen in the story, and not to how those events are presented in terms of pacing, direction, or shot composition. Basically it's as if you ran Breaking Bad through a "the curtains are just blue" filter. It's Breaking Bad but stripped of all the cinematic language used to elevate the script and create implications.
youtube
This video goes into detail comparing the same scene in both shows side by side (it's in Spanish tho) and shows how Metástasis misses a lot of the directorial choices that make the scene impactful in the original, e.g. the fact that there's no music when Gus enters and all we hear are his footsteps, the fact that when he enters he dominates the frame and the shot is held for an uncomfortable amount of time, and we see how Walter isn't able to keep his eyes on him and looks away uncomfortably, how when Gus kills Victor he's looking directly at Walter the entire time, etc.
Cursed/fun fact: back in 2014 a TV channel in my country got the rights to make a full remake of Breaking Bad set in Colombia.
Anyway Here's Jose Miguel Rosas (Colombian Jesse Pinkman)

The Breaking Bad storyline, although glacially slow in places, is packed with a series of utterly surprising events. Given the languid flow of the plot, these shocks are all the more effective, and, more importantly, they appear in the form of every emotion imaginable — from fear to anxiety to pleasure to joy to misery to rage.
RELATED: Breaking Bad: Each Main Character's First and Last Line In The Series
Of all the variety of moments present in the series, there are only a few that truly deserve mentioning for being the most shocking. Interestingly, nearly all of them have to do with just three characters: Gus Fring, Walter White, and Hank Schrader. Considering just how stunning each of these was, it's tough to pick one for the top spot.
10 Gus And His Box-Cutter
Tumblr media
Walt's plan to get rid of his replacement, Gale, works, but their employer is furious at his death. Obviously, nobody knows what's going to happen when Gus walks around with a box-cutter in his hand, but Jesse and Walt are terrified that their time is up.
Heisenberg then proposes that the meth operation would be decimated without them, at which point Gus straight up slashes Victor's neck and holds the wound open until he bleeds out. Walter, Jesse, and the audience all watch in total shock.
9 Walter Takes Holly With Him
Tumblr media
After Hank's untimely death, Walter knows that his first priority is his family, so he tries to get them all to disappear for the time being. Skyler and Flynn vehemently object, so much so that the boy even notifies the cops that his father is trying to kill his mother.
Before escaping, though, Walt "abducts" Holly and vanishes. Later, he is seen changing his daughter's nappy, as the baby murmurs the word "mama." What's even more unexpected is the fact that Walt rings his home, and smartly creates an alibi for his wife so that she wouldn't be implicated in his crimes.
8 The Child Assassin
Tumblr media
Andrea Cantillo's younger brother, Tomás, appears long before she does — first as an innocent kid cycling around the neighborhood as Jesse's friend, Combo is trying to sell Walt's product in an unfamiliar locality.
RELATED: Breaking Bad & 9 Other TV Shows That Boosted Tourism For Their Locations
It is later revealed that the kid is the assassin, having been "initiated" into a gang after he shoots and kills Combo point-blank. The horrors of children being involved in drug cartels aside; viewers simply could not imagine such an event taking place. Until it does.
7 Hank Is Attacked By The Salamanca Brothers
Tumblr media
Given that he had recently killed Tuco Salamanca, Hank should have been more aware of the repercussions, but as it stands, he is blissfully ignorant. In one intense scene, as he enters his vehicle, a mysterious caller lets him know that his fate is about to be sealed. This little clue does not, in any way, reduce the shock value of the moment.
Leonel takes the first several shots, but Hank reverses into him, when his brother, Marco, emerges. The DEA agent would have surely died had he not been able to locate and load a stray bullet in time for a bullseye headshot.
6 Walter's Plan For the Schwartzes
Tumblr media
Walter intends for Elliot and Gretchen Schwartz to take care of his family, but he has to threaten them into acceptance. He claims to have hired expensive hitmen, as evidenced by the sniper laser red dots suddenly appearing on their bodies, which scares the two of them sufficiently.
This intimidation tactic ensures that Walt's money will be delivered to Flynn. Of course, the so-called snipers are Skinny Pete and Badger using laser pens, but it works out in the end, so nobody's complaining. Except for the Schwartzes, probably.
5 Hank Is Murdered Without Mercy
Tumblr media
Hank and Gomez travel to where Walt's money is buried, but Jack Welker's gang makes it quite difficult for them. In fact, the latter is killed in the skirmish that follows, leaving his partner hopeless.
RELATED: Breaking Bad: What Your Favorite Character Says About You
Walt attempts to prevent the inevitable from happening, but Hank already knows that it's finished for him. He chastises his brother-in-law, "You're too stupid to see... he made up his mind ten minutes ago." Hank coldly says "Do what you're gonna do," and Jack does it.
4 The Tortuga In The Desert
Tumblr media
Hank is excited about his new mission in El Paso, but his colleagues don't seem too interested. After acquiring crucial info from a CI called Tortuga, they travel out into the desert.
Hank notices something moving in the distance, which turns out to be a tortoise (on whose back Tortuga's decapitated head is placed and the text "Hola DEA" has been inscribed). Macabre though this scene might be, the metaphorical bombshell is dropped when someone thoughtlessly moves the head, which activates a literal bomb.
3 Walt's Fulminated Mercury Idea
Tumblr media
Jesse Pinkman's stint at selling meth to Tuco Salamanca is a disaster — the young man is violently assaulted by the druglord's men for demanding reimbursement. Walter takes the matter into his own hands, traveling to Tuco and repeating the same demand made by his partner.
The other man simply mocks his audacity and wonders if he truly understands how deals like these go down. In response, the chemistry teacher blasts the place half open with a small piece of "fulminated mercury," a reaction that couldn't be seen coming from a mile away.
2 When Gus Becomes Two-Face
Tumblr media
Gus is constantly ahead of Walt's assassination attempts, so the latter hinges his entire plan on Hector Salamanca. Somehow, he gets the old man to agree to his complicated idea, in which he would be able to take down his hated enemy (while also losing his life). Hector despises Gus so much that he instantly agrees, so he pretends that he has become a DEA snitch.
RELATED: 10 Wild Similarities Between Breaking Bad And Malcolm In The Middle
This means that Gus needs to take care of this loose end, allowing Walt to install an explosive device "powered" by the old man's wheelchair bell. The resulting explosion shatters the room, but Gus staggers out, apparently alive. Then the shot moves on to his face, half of which has been ripped off his skull.
1 Gus' Bottle Of Zafiro Añejo Tequila
Tumblr media
Along with Jesse, Gus goes to Mexico, seemingly to "gift" Don Eladio with Jesse and, therefore, a means of producing the blue meth. At the poolside, he pops a secret pill and then gives the Don a bottle of Zafiro Añejo Tequila.
Knowing that the cartel would never trust something he offered, he consumes some of it first, which puts the others' minds at ease. Little do they know that Gus has come completely prepared for this; his actions decimate Don Eladio's cartel, successfully obtaining vengeance for the murder of his partner decades ago.

Analyzing the Merging Jimmy/Gene/Saul/Viktor Personas + Why We Needed the Jesse / Kim Scene
Last week (copied under the ***** below) I observed the deliberate, visual merging of Jimmy/Gene/Saul/Viktor and I’ve copied and pasted it here to add more after last night’s episode, “Waterworks.”
Significantly, “Waterworks” references both, the weather during the scene with Jesse and Kim in front of Saul Goodman’s Breaking Bad era office, AND to Kim’s sprinkler job, where Gene, under the Viktor persona, reached out to Kim and she told him to turn himself in, to his fury. The Jesse and Kim scene symbolized another transition - the end of Jimmy as Kim knew him, and beginning of Saul as Jesse and Walt come to know him.
We knew Saul successfully represented Jesse’s partner and Krazy 8’s cousin, Emilio twice. By the time Jesse and Walt meet him, Jesse’s confident in identifying him as a criminal lawyer/ “the real deal.” This meaningful scene demonstrates Saul signing away his life as Jimmy; he identifies that life as one with Kim, and he literally signed the divorce papers right before this scene. Kim exits his life, and in the last part of her conversation with Jesse, he asks, “so this guy, is he any good?” And she says, “when I knew him, he was.” But now, he’s breaking bad, and he’s already there before Walt ever meets him. Through Kim and Jesse’s seen, we saw another visual transition.
The Viktor/Gene phone call to Kim symbolized the end of “Viktor” as Jimmy knew the persona, and his fate of remaining trapped as Gene eternally, whether he dies, gets locked up, or continued on, bored, tired, and reckless, leaving us to imagine the outcome. We already KNOW the outcome. Jimmy never turned into Saul, Gene, OR Victor. He’s just always been the same person, getting progressively worse as time goes on.
I’ve noted some people questioning if the scene with Jesse and Kim was necessary (if we had to see Jesse there). In my analysis, the answer is absolutely, yes. It serves this “transition” idea, Jimmy becoming different versions of this person he’s always been, and the people, crucial to his life, who all knew him differently.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this, and the below part written last week.
**********
The visual transitions, back and forth from the BCS and Gene eras also struck me as telling for this character we’ve watched for years now, wondering about defining moments that would explain drastic shifts in his character. The writers shocked us initially by seeming to glaze over all that, but now I see why.
Those transitions blended Saul and Gene so perfectly, and Gene exhibits clear relics of Jimmy’s character, even going back to the Viktor-with-a-k identity from his early pranking days. Gene channels Jimmy because he IS Jimmy and he IS Saul. The scenes between Saul and Gene blend impeccably to the point that it looked for a second that Gene was there in the desert on the ground before we zoomed into him laying in bed. That’s the point. It’s the same guy. It’s been the same guy, now we’re finally learning who he’s always been, and it’s these characteristics that are taking him down.
Driving this point home for me: when Jimmy tried to convince Kim to stay and telling her she’d one day forget all about what they’d done/ the horrible things that happened, that sounded like he was channeling the advice Mike gave to him, back when he got into the dangerous situation because he was in over his head, “dragged” into the situation, but really he got there himself because he couldn’t turn down the money Lalo agreed to pay. This time, when Gene tried to persuade Buddy to proceed with robbing this man with cancer, it reminded me of Lalo persuading Jimmy and Kim to kill Gus, telling them they could do it and it was no big deal. That’s how far gone Jimmy/Saul/Gene is; he sounds like the same guy Saul is so terrified of when he meets Jesse and Walt, making it perfect that the episode began with and featured that scene.
