Tried to buy that secondhand build a bear that I talked about before at good will yesterday. He still had his stupid little outfit on. I took his shirt off to see if he'd look better without an outfit. And to compare him to another BAB that was donated who was the same kind (I think they're both grizzly bears) to see who I liked more. I decided I liked the one who had the clothes better. So I took him to checkout. But when I got to the register the cashier said she couldn't sell him because he had no tag. He had one before I took off his shirt. I must have accidentally ripped it off. I was so upset cause he had such a sweet face. So I told the lady I understood, and I'd just grab the other bear to buy instead. But she said no cause they can't make a new tag using that bear's tag. But I was like. No, thats not what Im trying to do. Im gonna buy the other bear instead because they are the same bear, and that one has its tag attatched still. But she wasn't understanding that I wasn't trying to get the first for the other's price. And the assistant manager was there and was backing up the cashier. But I know the asm, because she's my datemate's manager (he works there) and he's told me how she never listens to what someone is saying. And I've also delt with her before when she was cashiering, and I was trying to buy a surprise gift for my datemate (who she invited behind the register to check his bag after he clocked out and purposely let him see what I was buying even tho I told her it was a surprise). She sucks. So anyways, I gave up trying to explain myself and proceeded back towards the toy bins to get the other bear. But midway over, I decided it wasn't worth it and just left instead. And that experience was the calm before a quite literal (and terrifying) storm.

Mostly just practice at getting his face + hair right and trying, mostly, to draw his clothes (complicated scarf my beloathed 😤), but also featuring Sethos+Rain, my ultimate OTP! (He canonically goes umbrella-less in the rain cause it never rains in the desert, so you KNOW the first time he got caught in the rain in the jungle he was jumping and dancing around like a little kid with the biggest grin on his face 😁🥰)

the other thing about hiking accidents that scares the piss out of me is that after five years of living in portland's very temperate climate, i FORGOT how bad weather can get. most hikers who get hurt in oregon are from the portland area and try to summit mount hood, which is a nearby volcano with year-round ice-covered wintry conditions. it's not an easy climb for experienced mountaineers and it is So Deadly for city folk who haven't been taught about the danger.

but i went home to new hampshire in april, which depending on the year is still deep winter in the north of the state. (this year it was deep winter in the south, too, there was a huge snowstorm the DAY i arrived.)

and i was talking about driving up to the white mountains, which happen to include the deadliest mountain in the continental US. and i was like "yeah, i figure i'll take a day and go up and take some pictures!! there's a dark sky spot in the heart of the mountains that i've been wanting to visit on a clear night, i'm looking forward to it"

and my siblings, who both climb the white mountains regularly, and who both have rescue insurance & read all the incident reports about hiking accidents up there, were like

".....kitkat. you have to look up the weather. if it's cloudy down here, chances are it's snowing and icy up there. you'll Never get the car over the ridge, you're gonna get trapped in an ice slick with no heat and no food. kitkat it is not worth it. kitkat....."

and. like.

why did they make this vegeta starting shit with yamcha instead of chillin in the lab with his family? why did they take Bulma out of the lab? Why'd they say she was Out while Dr Brief was repairing 16? Why did they change Bulma working on advanced robotics to running in late with her baby?

it's the same scene except: - Bulma's actively at work being a scientist - Vegeta's not being rude to her (or anyone else!) - Vegeta waits for Trunks instead of leaving the room - Cell interrupted the airwaves, which means Trunks and Vegeta were just hanging out with Bulma and Dr B while they were working

Those are all Great Character Details!! That the anime rails against!!

So I saw the worst thing while wandering through this webbed site: AI generated cat pics.

And from an uncanny valley perspective they were fine... But they are the worst thing because if I am hunting for cat pics because I am sad,. I am looking for the joy that comes when someone shares that wonderful beast that shares their house. That combination of pride and wonder of "Look at this thing that has deemed to love me! Isn't it wonderful?" That only comes from another human being sharing with other human beings something that they love. It's wonderful. It's human. It's community.

And there's something so absolutely terrible and soulless and cold about AI renditions cats.

People don't love looking at cat pictures because they are images of cats. People love looking at cat pictures because it is a snapshot of a moment that a person thought was worth capturing.

Somewhere in this rant there's a metaphor for why machine generated art is anathema, but damn if i'm still mostly angry about being cheated with crappy AI cat pics.
