i've seen a lot of people complain about the dawntrail final dungeon for being a thing that we have basically already done and i understand and in many ways agree with that complaint but i do think it varies from the usual in ways that are actually pretty compelling.

spoilers for dawntrail follow, natch.

like okay in amaurot and the dead ends and the lunar subterrane (okay this is definitely a well CBU3 has gone to too many times), the premise is the fights you're engaging in are all kind of historical. behold, the dooms of amaurot. tremble before ra-la, a real sphinx that actually existed once somewhere. face durante, just as golbez faced him in real life.

and accordingly, because all the fighting is supposed to match the energy of the dungeons, these are moments of panic and peril. the world is ending. the worlds are ending. the kingdom is on fire. there's a solemn villain voiceover to really drive the point home (we just wanted to play...on da amaurotine playground...). amaurot is falling and look how sad it is. every world died and look how painful it was. my best buddy golbez died and it was really sad. everything is Fucked Up.

what's really fun about alexandria by contrast, particularly in the first part, is that things are fine, actually! sphene's here (well, "heah"), and we love her, and she smiles because we smile and we smile for her :). oh no alexandria is falling and it's so sad and noble because of everyone's chivalric sacrifices :( oh yay we're rebuilding from the ashes :)

it's a beautiful, tragic, noble story. and the whole time no one's talking to you, not like normal. sphene's kind of reciting the lyrics to memory from cats listlessly but everyone in her memories is talking to each other, not to you. none of them are interacting with you. you're not fighting alongside her against her enemies or taking down conjured horrors from the past.

no, the whole time you're being reminded of one very specific fact.

You're foreign. You're not from here. This is not for you. This is not yours. This peace was not yours and never will be. This grief, this hope. You chose otherwise. You were offered the chance to be Alexandrian. You rejected it. Stay over there. Stay out. You are not wanted here.

in what i personally choose to interpret as a bit of dark comedy, when things start breaking down, it's literally one of the only words you still understand.

ultimately what distinguishes alexandria from amaurot or the dead ends (intentional "this is why i'm sad" slideshows made specifically for the warrior of light to experience) or the lunar subterrane (accidental memory recreation) is that you are choosing to invade sphene's memories. you are doing a cool little backdoor heist at the luxor casino by causing chaos all over the strip before you crawl through the vents to get to the mainframe or whatever.

but in the context of dawntrail, alexandria is the invading power, the rapacious techno-dystopia that intends to carry out forever wars so it can use the literal souls of its enemies to power its treat machines and which not so coincidentally spawned in north america. and alexandria has literally invaded both tuliyollal and yyasulani at this point. so the conceit of the memory guardians helps make clear the hegemonic logic at play. you are a foreign entity. you are not a subject of the state. your life has no value. you must be removed.

or, if removal proves impossible, exterminated.

Debut: Tetris Worlds

While researching for last week's post, I discovered something amazing. Something I haven't been able to stop thinking about. No matter what, my mind always comes back to

Tetris Lore

Now, I'm not going to act like Tetris has an overarching story, or that the story of one game is at all relevant to the other games. Tetris Worlds is just one game, and its story is self-contained. But the fact that this Tetris game has a story at all is really incredible!

What would you expect from a Tetris game with a story? Maybe something like, the Tetriminos are all best friends living in Block World, but one day, wuh woh! There's a Bad Guy who's a sphere who hates cubes or something! Luckily, with the power of our friendship and Tetris skills, we can teach him a lesson and banish him once more... or perhaps make a new friend? :)

These are the Minos! Minos, in this canon, are a species of cycloptic cubes with fascinating cycloptic faces on their forward-facing faces. I absolutely adore them already. And wouldn't you know it, their sun is going supernova and they are all going to die if they can't evacuate their planet in time. HUH???

This story is so fascinating! I am SO happy that someone came up with this when tasked with making a story for a Tetris game. There was a creative vision, and it appears to be fully realized in this short but unforgettable intro to what could have easily been just another Tetris game!

You get to have a Mino as an avatar! This could be YOU! You can make them wear a funny hat as they hover and squash and stretch on the sidelines while you play Tetris!

The game's manual explains even more about the Minos, most notably that they are MECHANICAL! These things just keep getting better! Living, cycloptic cubes, with an entire futuristic society, and they're machines. The manual also feels the need to remind us that they were probably made by organic beings, as "most" mechanical beings are. And I find that suspiciously specific...

Look at this fish! This mechanical, cycloptic Mino fish. This was not in the Xbox version's intro, but it was in the PS2 one! For whatever reason, the two had unique animation in their intros, despite using the same voiceover. This fish is shown emerging from water onto land, where it beholds the Tetrions, the sacred and powerful portals in which the game of Tetris takes place. The visual of a fish coming onto land is such in-your-face evolution imagery that I am ENTIRELY convinced that these fish were ancestors of the Minos who would later form civilization! Natural, evolving robots!

...and then this intro goes on to depict the Minos as having TWO eyes. Yeah ok. Sure. I will confidently declare these binocular blockheads as non-canon based on everything else we've seen, ESPECIALLY because the actual gameplay even depicts cycloptic Minos!

Some of them seem to be established characters. This is Izabela. Hi Izabela!

Are you on the edge of your seat, hoping our friends the Minos survive? They do! Savvy Tetris skills allow them to activate the Tetrions (which were left behind by an ancient space-faring civilization. In case you were wondering) and teleport to other planets. Minos live! Hooray. And now you know the Tetris Lore, and can think about it constantly like I do!

Lastly, I made this little image of the Mino leader from Worlds, in the style of a Tetris Friends avatar! I like to think some cross-promotional avatars could have been added if Worlds came out during the lifespan of Tetris Friends. I can only hope that at least someone at The Tetris Company remembers this incarnation of the Minos, and that they could possibly appear in a game once more!

♥️Reveling in Richonne - TOWL

#3: The Getting Back To You (1.01)

Let me just start this one by saying - we been knew. 👌🏽 We knew Rick’s sole focus would be getting back to his wife and daughter, even when some incessantly begged to differ. But in case anyone didn’t believe it back then - something I’ve always applauded and will always appreciate about the character of Rick Grimes is that he too is gonna let everyone know that Michonne is his everything and the one who's been fueling him to get home. She is home, so it makes sense. And in these next few scenes, Rick’s letter voice-over makes that sentiment loud and clear...

So Rick wakes up from his dream and just has a quiet lonely moment to himself in his room. And then we hear him speak and I love that he’s speaking to Michonne. As he’ll say later, this is the only way he’s able to feel something in the CRM, by reaching out and speaking to his wife. 🥺

And as he’s forced to endure another day in the CRM, he lays in bed and even sorta holds himself in a way that reminds me of when Michonne held herself on their bed after putting on his shirt.

These soulmates and even their subtlest parallels move me. We know from the main show Rick and Michonne are so used to waking up in each other's arms and it’s almost like now they both hold themselves in the way the other would have had they not been separated. 🥲

It’s also sweet and heartbreaking that both Michonne and Rick still talked to each other like they were still in every way partners while they were apart. Michonne did so by talking aloud to him in their bedroom and Rick did so in the abundance of letters he’d write to her. 

Episode 1 really showed that Rick has stayed as deeply and loyally in love with Michonne as she was in love with him while apart. Like they both acted as though they were taken and fully married to each other still.

So with helicopters in the background, the voiceover starts with Rick saying, “I always thought I would wait to tell you everything when we were finally back together.” 

This is definitely the saddest of the TOWL episodes and hearing Rick say he thought he’d be able to tell Michonne all these things in person when they were back together but now he’s realized he just has to tell her now in a letter he knows she likely won’t receive. 😢

One; I just know Rick is so aware of how much he and Michonne both long to be together. Like during season 9, their union was the most solid and flourishing thing in their life and then it was abruptly taken away and all they want is to get back to that.

Two; I also love how in these letters Rick was basically like 'I don’t care how much the CRM loves their secrets, I’m spilling all their tea to my wife. She gets to know everything y’all got going on because...

And then he says, “That it’d just be a story on the porch after the sun went down when we could barely see each other.” So sweet and sad. 🥲 He was so convinced that this wild experience would be swiftly handled and he’d be home to her, likely never expecting it would take years and years.

I also love what he says here because I had hoped that TOWL would give us some little insights into aspects and memories of Richonne’s relationship we didn’t get to see on screen and I love learning one of their things was sitting on the porch just talking with each other into the late hours of the night. It reminds me of their canon ep and how they clearly always enjoy ending their day talking and decompressing together. 

Rick says, “But I have to tell you now. Not everything. I can’t face everything.” as he takes out several letters and phones of Michonne and a younger and older Judith from the couch cushion. My heart. ❤️‍🩹 I love that he has so many phone drawings of his wife and daughter and their images are so accurate. Rick remembers his girls so vividly and clearly describes them well considering the artist even got the details right of how Michonne would wear her hair in different styles. 😊

After being plucked from his home, these phone images are the only things really tethering Rick to who he is. 😢 He never made himself at home with the Civic Republic all these years and you see it through his barren apartment.

It’s not until he opens the couch cushion, where he essentially hides himself, that we see there is any true traces of Rick Grimes in this place, and of course, those traces are through illustrations of his wife and daughter and the letters he writes to Michonne.

It’s sad that he’s had to hide that part of himself to protect them. The hidden phones and letters feel symbolic of all the other ways Rick has had to hide himself in this place. And his wife and daughter are the most treasured parts of himself alive. They’re his heart. 

The phone illustrations include the one of Michonne that Rick looked at in the teaser. One of older Judith in front of a home. (Idk how the older Judith image was so spot on but Benjiro did a good job 👌🏽) One of Michonne with her hair pulled back like she wore in s9. And my favorite - one of Michonne and younger Judith together. Just precious. 🥹 This family man Rick forever has my heart and his girls' forever have his.

Rick makes the mindset he's held while he’s been away crystal clear when he says “This is most of it. But all of it, it was always about getting back to you.” It doesn’t get any clearer than that where his priorities lie.

It’s like I’ve said before - Michonne and Judith (and RJ he just doesn’t know it yet) aren’t just on top of a list of Rick’s desired reunions, they are the list. And I love how Rick wants Michonne to know that every single thing he’s done in the last few years was motivated by his desire and his fervent need to be with her again.

Even before the announcement of TOWL and before the trailers we knew Michonne would be a priority to Rick while he was away. Rick loved team family of course, but of all the adults in his life, Michonne is far and away the most important to him. Like completely in a league of her own. And just like how Glenn and Maggie were solely focused on getting back to each other after the prison fell (and Maggie had a blood sister missing and still was focused heavily on reuniting with her husband) of course Rick feels the same about getting back to his wife. The man is a family man to the core and that means his immediate family - his wife and kids - will always come first.  

Rick goes on to say, “What happened on the bridge, I didn’t think I’d survive.” He then explains how he woke up in a military hospital to learn that an army with a force of thousands had found him.

Rick let’s Michonne know about the military and the huge hidden city it protects. He tells her the army’s code is “security and secrecy above all...” And in some ways, Rick adopts that same line of thinking even when he reunites with Michonne. He becomes hyper-focused on securing her safety to the point that it makes him act out and keep secrets from her, thinking it’s the only way.

The letter continues with Rick saying “...so no one can leave ever." He further gives the rundown on the place and how the people they rescue have to work killing walkers for energy or growing food. And then we see Rick on his walker-killing shift as Okafor observes him.

Rick explains it takes six years before people are accepted into the Civic Republic and during that time they’re called consignees. But he assures Michonne, saying, “And I was one of them but I was never gonna go in. I was gonna get away. I was gonna get back to you,” and then he passionately emphasizes that getting back to her is what he was determined to do.

This scene was giving love story and Rick is the greatest yearner to walk the earth. I love how adamant he is in saying that he was never going to lose sight of his ultimate goal and that’s getting to her.  Again, not just home, but her. 

Like had Rick escaped the CRM and made it to ASZ and team family told him 'oh yeah, Michonne and Judith live in Oceanside now,' Rick would be knocking on Oceanside's door before they could even finish the sentence like...

You know he'd be letting the ladies of the community know a man is now moving in lol. Because wherever his wife and daughter are is where home is. 👌🏽

Rick starts killing walkers with one hand and then he falls and Okafor approaches saying “Could have used the other hand, huh?” Okafor proceeds to say he came down here because he spoke with Major General Beale. Rick asks “About me?” And Okafor says “Yeah. You are lucky you have a friend in high places.” Rick casts some doubt saying “You’re my friend, huh?” as he continues working.

Okafor suggests he’s possibly the best friend Rick ever had for the way he’s lobbying the head of the most powerful military on Rick’s behalf. Rick isn't exactly moved by that and instead inquires about what caused the scar on Okafor’s forehead. Okafor says “Someone like you happened” as he segways to suggest Rick will be good for his program. From Rick's response, you can tell Rick doesn’t want to sign any papers in this place.

Okafor tells Rick “You think that staying out here gives you a better chance to get away. It doesn’t. It just gives you another chance to die. You may have noticed I don’t want to see that happen.” Rick listens but he’s really not trying to hear all that so he says he’s going back to work.

Okafor asks if he heard what he said but Rick cuts him off frustrated and says “You don’t have to do this anymore,” indicating this recruitment has been unwantedly recurring. Okafor walks away and there's a shot where you can see that a different person holds the kill record on that brick wall...but Grimes is about to change that. 👌🏽

As Rick’s letter to Michonne continues he says, “First time I tried, the army didn’t know what to do with me. Because no one tries to escape. No one wants to.” That’s because no one has a whole goddess to try to get home to like Rick. Just saying. 🤗

Rick expresses that he wasn’t sure if they’d put him in jail or kill him for escaping. And even that shows his immense determination to get home to her because, without even knowing what the consequences would be, he still had to take the risk and try to escape. He shares that Okafor convinced the CRM to make him a consignee and how even then he kept trying to escape. A determined king. 😌

Rick says, “But I couldn’t. I couldn’t get back to you. I kept trying to get away. So they put me on a leash when we went out into the world. I couldn’t get away. I couldn’t get back to you.” I love how often he says “get back to you” in this. That’s been the theme of his life these last few years. And as he says this he grows more frustrated killing walker after walker and declares “I was trapped.”

Rick ‘Built Different’ Grimes then takes out a ton of walkers one-handed before letting out a yell. (Also, I just noticed while Rick is killing all those walkers, the other consignees are in the back watching and cheering him on cuz he’s breaking the kill record lol. 😂 And Rick and Michonne really are cut from the same cloth cuz they both had consignees watching them in awe while they worked. The famous Mr and Mrs. Grimes. 😌)

Rick leans against the brick wall exhausted as his voiceover says Okafor protected him because he saw something in him and wanted him to join the army and his program “to use my life for them.”

Okafor walks up to Rick again and stoops down to say the line heard in the TWD series finale “There’s no escape for the living.” And Rick looks up at him like he wants to rip out his jugular.

Okafor says he left a uniform in Rick's apartment and adds “It’s time to accept things for what they are. It cost your hand last time. Next time it’s your life. Do something with it.” And as Rick sits against the wall breathing and upset he just looks so empty and exasperated by this existence. 😔

Then he walks back to his apartment, scowling and covered in blood. Seeing Rick walk around like this, you can see how consignees and CRM folk might view him solely as a crazy gruff intimidating guy even tho we know him as having the biggest heart.

Rick takes note of a helicopter flying off with chlorine bombs and then Pearl Thorne makes her more official introduction to TOWL when she tosses a glass at Rick's feet, to which I was like, Thorne...

Pearl basically thanks Rick for showing her she can’t get away from this place and Rick just stays quiet as he walks back to his apartment as it's clear these two don't yet have a bond.

Then in a moment of some excellent silent acting, Rick returns to the apartment and sees the CRM uniform on the table. He looks back out at the cold view from his window and I definitely get the sense that he loathes seeing that view every day. It's a reminder that he’s so far from home.

Rick proceeds to lean against the wall and then sits against it going through a gamut of emotions and walking the thin tightrope of sanity.

He first closes his eyes and takes a deep breath and then he starts to laugh to himself before putting his hand to his head like he’s nursing a headache of conflicting thoughts and frustrations.

He stands up and looks at the CRM gear and then angrily tosses the whole table and uniform showing he still wants to refuse to accept this fate. The poor man is going through it, and all alone. 🥺

It's clear Rick hates so much about this place and the way it's kept him from the family that he needs to live. At this rate, I was like my gosh for Rick’s sake I hope there’s been at least one thing lighthearted in his life here because so much of his situation is depressing and heavy. Hello, big fan of yours and I love listening to your well thought-out and honest takes on the things you review. Event Comics Month 5 was excellent, I'm going to be re-binging the whole series soon. Just out of curiosity, I've just watched your Star Trek Broken Mirror review, and got reminded of something you said at the end of Superior Spidey 1-5. What is it about the villainous TNG crew here that makes it work for you here, as opposed to the villanous Doc Ock Spidey being the the focus? Or alternatively, why does the alternative dark universe with known and established characters work for you here where it didn't in, say, Future's End?

So before the schedule slip-ups, the Broken Mirror review was supposed to come out RIGHT AFTER the Superior Spider-Man review, within a week or so. But I completely anticipated people being confused why I was so against that but enjoyed the openly villainous mirror universe stuff.

When it became clear the episode wasn't going to come out anywhere near when it was supposed to, I cut out my ending shpiel about it, figuring people wouldn't really care that much about it or even be thinking about it when there was so long separating the time between them. However, since I thought it might come up again, I saved the text of that, soooo enjoy this cut section of the script! This was before general proofreading and editing, so it's likely this would have changed in the final script (I think I was repetitive in one or two spots) Voiceover So why do I like this kind of story with villain protagonists while other ones like Superior Spider-Man leave me sour? I think partly because we are still seeing THEIR stories – it’s not intruding on another’s like Ock stealing Spidey’s body, identity, etc. It’s also unpredictable. We frequently joke about how some characters in TV shows have main character shields – that we know nothing will PERMANTLY hurt a character because… well, they’re a main character. A story that features alternate versions of these characters does open up possibilities for storytelling not possible in the main version of the media we’re watching. Plus there is something just fun where all of the values we enjoy exemplified in heroic characters are completely inverted – being conniving, sinister, manipulative, and just a general asshole don’t have to be frowned upon. It’s an alternate universe – not the main one we follow, where we have fun witnessing something recognizable – the aspects of these characters we know and love… but twisted to ridiculous degrees.

Live Action Plus, just the open villainy on display is entertaining. Sure, they have their own twisted sense of morality at times, but really it comes down to “Mwahahahaha, I will conquer the universe!” kind of goofy.

Voiceover One of the things that people said they liked about Superior Spider-Man was that they felt it was Otto Octavius trying to be a better person. But in my personal opinion, I didn’t see that. I saw a guy who thinks he’s ALREADY a better person – an arrogant douchenozzle who assumes he knows better and can DO better than the guy whose body he stole. Sure, he wants to help people now… but it’s not out of a recognition of his own moral failures and how wrong he used to be and wanting to improve himself. It’s instead out of a selfish desire to validate his ego. “I can live this guy’s life better than him – I can be a better hero than him!”

Live Action Whereas with the mirror universe, they hold no illusions about moral superiority, they’re just like “IT’S COOL AND I WANT IT. GIMME GIMME GIMME.” And I think that’s just refreshing for me.

A Romantic Comedy (based on the trailer)

When I saw Carmy walking in the trailer, it reminded me of this scene with Richie in 1x06 post date.

This looks like a date gone wrong or a date that never happened for Carmy. Funny enough, the voiceover for this clip is Syd asking Why are you doing this and Carmy telling her they're going to get a star. (I also think this whole thing about the partnership agreement happens the first episode of the season.)

There are so many clips in that trailer that scream romantic comedy, even the sequence of the trailer.

BTW- A "good thing" is always used in The Bear. Steven said it to Carmy when he freaked out about Richie andMikeyy trying to hook him up.

There's still time surrounding Claire while calm represents Sydney. Also, Claire is getting these weird close-up shots that I only see with his family.

Time again with claire- waste of time- going slow- go faster motherfucker etc.

Another hint at a Romantic comedy-

The romantic co-lead meets with a different partner while the romantic interest waits for her lead - they don't seem to be together...

Plot: The guy commits to work full time after breaking up with romantic interest. But by committing to work instead of finding misery he finds joy in everything, including his business partner.

Shannon Beveridge gaylor moment in Friend of Dorothy merch ad

When she dropped this merch I already thought there was a connection, but this ad confirms it. While she’s driving, the camera cuts to showing what song is on the stereo. Somewhere over the rainbow is what you actually hear, and yet Shannon (the director) made sure to show us that the song “Dorothea” is given a nod, while Shannon’s voiceover explains the meaning of the question “are you a friend of Dorothy?”

Just a reminder that Shannon is the ex gf and current friend of Cari Fletcher, who has attended multiple parties of Taylor’s, including at least one birthday party, and who has openly stated that she has written lyrics about eating 😺 based off Taylor’s favorite drink.

I had to make a BIG post going over everything that's got my brain whirring after watching the story trailer - it's all my speculation and personal opinion so don't take it as fact yada yada IT'S FUN SPECULATION TIME

(I'll put it under the cut bc this is gonna be a LONG one)

“Miquella the kind spoke of the beginning. The seduction. And the betrayal. An affair from which Gold arose. And so too was Shadow born."

My interpretation of this scene is that we are seeing the creation of the Golden Order by Marika. She plucks grace from something dead and fleshy, and holds it up to the Greater Will, beckoning in her new age. It would make sense to me, considering the voiceover, that this is a dead god that has been betrayed by Marika so she can pursue her Order and claim power. It does like quite reminiscent of Kos from Bloodborne to me. The fleshiness of the corpse also reminds me of the godskins/snakeskin. However, I don't believe this is the Gloam Eyed Queen. From my understanding of the timeline (mainly thanks to @eldenringslut) the GEQ didn't come about until later on during Marika's reign - if we are seeing the creation of the GO, and my understanding of the timeline is correct, I don't think it would make sense for this to be the GEQ. I can't deny different aspects of this do allude to things related to her though - the dusky sky, the godskin-like flesh. But I almost think that would be too 'perfect' for it to fit together like that, especially with how much people want to know more about the GEQ, I think fromsoft would want to keep us in the dark and surprise us. Whatever we are seeing here, Gold and Shadow seemingly came about at the same time.

We get our first look at what appears to be Messmer's army. They appear to all wield spears which ties into Messmer's whole Impaler thing, along with the shot of the person(?) impaled on the steps. I wonder who these people were, if they had to stay in the Shadow Realm after the battle was done (if it is?). I find the design on the helmet interesting - at first glance I thought it could be a tree or roots, but actually doesn't it kind of remind you of the black tendrils that shoot out of Messmer's flame? I think it could be either, or both, or maybe it's a chicken and egg situation and they're related somehow... my first thought when the initial gameplay trailer came out was that the dark tendrils in Messmer's flame could be deathroot or something similar to that. Maybe I wasn't far off?

We get our first shot of Messmer here. His pose pretty much solidifies to me that this is his army - this is the pose of a character commanding an army. It's so classic fantasy, the composition and everything, I love it. Messmer is awesome. I'm obsessed with the snake-like flames flying above the carnage.

"What followed was a war unseen. One that could never be put to song. A purge without Grace, or honour. The tyranny of Messmer's flame."

My take on this is that once Marika had won her battle/betrayed the God we see her pluck Grace from, she had her opponents banished and/or wiped out at the hands of Messmer. I have to say, it does surprise me that it seems Messmer was around and fully grown at the creation of Marika's Order. The implications there leave me with so many questions. Who is his other parent? Marika is Numen, and they seldom give birth. This is not an insignificant thing for her to have a child, especially if the theory of births being governed by the Erdtree/Golden Order is to be believed, and this must have came about before then. It would also go against the idea that Messmer is the full brother/secret triplet of Miquella and Malenia, considering that Miq + Mal were not born until Marika had left Godfrey for Radagon. I find that detail so intriguing... especially because I was so on board with the butterfly theories.

No idea who this is, but they're cool and that definitely looks like the kind of weapon we'd be able to pick up. It just looks like a PVP weapon, know what I mean? Very reminiscent of Vyke as well imo, similar pose to the box art of him along with the billowing cape. This reminds me, I'm noticing an emphasis on hair in this trailer too - I never took much note of Marika's hair before but in this trailer there was a lot of emphasis put on how long it is, how similar it is to threads of Grace, and Miquella's hair too. It's making me think of the bible story of Samson but let me not go too off the rails

Here we have some of the coolest shots in the trailer imo. This posits the Lion/Omens as enemies of Messmer to me - which to me supports the view that Messmer is aligned with Marika. The Lion/Omens always came off to me as if they were making a mockery of the GO - positioning themselves as enemies to Marika/the GO. We get another good look at his Flame, with the tendrils. They almost remind me of thorns actually. That final shot looks like a victory scene to me. It also really hammers home the Impaler thing. The man knows his brand!

Then we pan up to see what hangs above this burned city - this 'shadow tree'. THIS IS MARIKA'S RUNE.

I think we are seeing the origins of her rune as part of the modern Elden Ring here - Grace/blessings dripping from the bough of this tree. I have to say given the imagery relating to motherhood on the run up to the DLC, the rune does look vaguely yonic, especially on the seals. I think references to motherhood are in this trailer too - Marika taking something from a fleshy orifice with a voiceover talking about seduction, I can't imagine that wasn't intentional. So far the main character we have seen is her child, after all. The whole story of Elden Ring revolves around Marika's children. I have a feeling Marika's relation to motherhood and childbearing is going to be a big theme in the DLC.

I remember when the first gameplay trailer dropped, people theorised that this was Ranni's rune, and I was happy to believe that because of the similarities to Rennala's rune. But now I believe it's Miquella's rune, for several reasons, one being it reminds me of Malenia's rune, and they are twins after all. Although Rennala and Malenia's runes are oddly similar, it just makes more sense to me that it would be Miquella's, considering we are following in his footsteps. I think these rune spikes are going to be our DLC equivalents of sites of grace.

Abandoning his flesh is very reminiscent of Ranni... but why would he need to abandon his flesh? Perhaps after Mohg stole him away? Though I have to say, I'm warming up the idea that Mohg never actually had Miquella, he just thought he did. That might not make sense considering that body in Mohg's palace is how we get to the Shadow Lands, but I don't know, something about it doesn't sit quite right with me for some reason. The line 'his blinding strength' is a bit odd. I can't take credit for this next idea, I saw it on twitter, but someone suggested that this is referencing him potentially abandoning Malenia - his strength, his blade. For Miquella to abandon Malenia though, it doesn't exactly align with what we know of his character. This is the person that turned his back on the GO because it could do nothing for Malenia's sickness. He'd need a really good reason to do that to her. Maybe it was his only option? I'm so intrigued about why Miquella is even in the Shadow Lands to begin with. What are his motivations? Perhaps it's something to do with his proclivity to want to welcome all, especially those outside of Grace, I suppose those in the shadow lands fall under that mantle.

Now THIS is super interesting - our first look at St. Trina! In her usual purple - associated with sleep. It does also look like she's sleeping here, sinking... What on earth does it mean to say that Miquella abandoned his fate as we are shown an image of St. Trina? Was he meant to eventually become Trina fully? We don't know much about her, but we do know Trina is an aspect/alter-ego of some sort of Miquella. Considering his parents were one in the same body, it's not a stretch to assume this could be the same case here. But in Marika/Radagon's case, it doesn't seem completely intentional - with the Ring shattering, I always got the impression they each fought to be in control of their singular body. Perhaps Miquella/Trina worked together rather than against each other? The queer part of me can't help but think of some kind of allegory to transition and Miquella having to walk away from it for whatever reason... but I really don't know enough to figure anything out from this.

I saw someone point out that this shot of Trina looks like Trina's lilies too, which is super cool (sorry I don't remember who that was).

I'm honestly surprised to see all these characters that we saw in the previous trailer just hanging out, I assumed they'd all be enemies of different factions. But here they look like allies, and from the voiceover they sound like it too, asking if we will join them. I think the voiceover is one of these NPCs. Seeing the fighting guy second on the left has got me super excited, what if he teaches us the hands-on combat we saw him do in the first trailer? I also think the crouching character on the right is the one we saw sleeping in the purple area (Trina?) from the last trailer:

Anyway, these are my thoughts, I hope they resonate in one way or another. I can't wait to come back in a couple months and see how wrong I was <3 yayyy

yanqing & yunli except i headcanon yunli as audhd so it’s yanqing and his disaster gf

i’ve seen this one really really really sweet couple on insta, it’s a nt guy and his audhd wife and theyre so sweet. he takes the time to understand her and how their brains are different and it’s so lovely. anyways i kind of imagine yanli like that when their relationship develops more. especially because we got to see them outside of their squabbling in the last part of the tb quest—they work together well; they actually have grown to trust and respect each other (there’s also a dialogue if you choose to talk to yunli before confronting hoolay w/ feixiao where she compliments yanqing on his finishing atk and asks him to teach it to her—she even lightheartedly admits he might be stronger than her), and i feel that their trust and respect will only grow more with time. and of course they will always squabble and pick at each other

so to elaborate on audhd yunli, first off we all know how blunt and stubborn she is. her thinking is so straightforward that even her fighting style is “smash with big stick, everything die” (she prefers brute force over strategy or dexterity—doesn’t mean she can’t strategize, i just mean to point out that even in her fighting she gets straight to the point which i find amusing). i adore her so much my beautiful autistic daughter. special interest is swords. yanqing gets an honorable mention because he’s also obsessed with swords but i think he’s just a sword nerd who collects swords while yunli’s interest goes into the forging, the history, the personalities of the swords

yunli: we may both be obsessed with swords but i am obsessed with them in a much deeper and more autistic way than you could ever be

i have also considered though that yanqing could be headcanoned as having adhd; he’s impulsive, and i do still love the idea from pjo of demigods having an advantage in battle because of their adhd. reminds me of yanqing, he’s a hyperactive little dude bouncing all over the place in battle and idk. he’s also just. a teenage boy. so idk, remains to be determined

anyways i just hc that in all parts of yunli’s life except for anything having to do with swords she’s a complete mess and a ticking time bomb. everything in her room is a mess—except her swords (and old mettle is given the most pristine treatment). she’ll ignore any expectations put upon her unless it has to do with swords or something else she’s a little interested in. she has a few safe foods she eats on rotation in mass amounts.

also im imagining her in school and all i can picture is the leg bounce and the thousand yard stare. +10000 aura she doodles swords on all her papers. every project where students are given enough creative liberty and freedom to choose their topic, you fucking bet yunli is going to talk about swords in one way or another. idk how school works on the xianzhou zuming or frankly anywhere in hsr, but i guess that doesnt matter and i dont really care

also her sense of justice and tunnel vision with cursed swords. it’s so black and white to her (it has a lot to do with trauma ofc, but still i see that same kind of black/white thinking and extreme sensitivity to injustice as a trait on the spectrum).

i also would like to share headcanons about her sensorial and tactical development as a child lol. something about her screams sensory seeking. i use the korean voiceover, and i ADORE how they’ve voiced her and the direction they went. i haven’t listened to the english much, but from what ive heard she seems a lot more softspoken, which isn’t at all wrong or bad, it just is different than what i expected. in the kvo she’s got this monotone shrill going on that little girls with zero vocal control have and it’s fantastic. i hc she has no sense of volume whatsoever, can’t perceive her voice and doesn’t realize she’s shouting, things like that. it really fits with how she acted in her story quest, she’s just absolutely tone-deaf, both literally with her voice and figuratively with social cues, reading the room, etc.

practicing with old mettle has got to be so fucking loud, she’s throwing that shit around and it’s going CLANG CLANG CLANG and there’s no way she doesn’t have massive tolerance to high sensory input. for kids who are on the extreme end of high sensory needs, they’ll sometimes just seek out loud noises constantly, and of course, won’t realize it might be disruptive to others because they don’t even feel like it’s loud. so yeah yunli stims by throwing swords around because hell yeah. the fucking CLANG CLANG CLANG regulates her nervous system i just know it🗣️🔥

while some people are just born with dif sensory needs/issues, they can also develop due to your sensory experience, or lack thereof, as a child. kids who weren’t held/interacted with enough might have difficulty with lots of sensory input, while on the other hand (i dont know this one for sure, i am making a guess) i would think that a lot of exposure to excess sensory input might cause that kid to develop high sensory needs.

and that’s what i think with yunli would be part of her sensory issues, whether or not we’re even talking about autism—she grew up in the forgery around all that constant noise, not to mention the traumatic cursed sword event which could have exacerbated the way all that affected her nervous system because it also messed with her emotions and trauma is stored in the body AND she was a child, yadda yadda :3

i could keep going but idk this has been in my drafts for so long bc i kept thinking of shit and i didnt even talk that much about yanli

the reason i see them as disaster gf and nt bf is because although we’ve seen yanqing being a little shit, so much of that is about his maturity level as he’s still a teen. i just feel it and can’t articulate it well, i just feel that he’s got a calm spirit in there somewhere and as he grows he’s going to become so measured and patient and self-disciplined and it’s fantastic i want to see him grow into a fine young man (i know we probably wont but i can imagine it😞). it feels like that’s the direction he’s going with all the development from the recent tb quest, not to mention the parallels he has with jingliu

i hope this makes sense to others and not just me, for some reason i really see them as the wholesome nd girl and nt boy unlikely wombo combo cause yanqing has so much spunk and fire and yunli has so much spunk and fire but neurodivergently and they just burst into flames around each other but as they grow older it will wane and they will fan it down into glowing embers, soft and warm in the hearth; yanqing will hold her explosive spirit in his hands so gently, he’ll admire and understand her like no one else because somehow he just gets her, and she thrives in his comforting warmth. and when yanqing’s spirit crumbles and he loses that warmth and loses faith in himself, yunli can remind him of his strength and reinstall his sense of justice; she also brings the fresh autistic perspective of carefree innocence and autonomy that i feel yanqing needs in times where he might be overwhelmed by expectations or outside opinions. i just ugh i just . i love them i am going to throw up they’re beautiful and i just think that autistic yunli being understood by neurotypical yanqing is something that is so important to. society at large ,

Shot from inside the Sunoco from behind the counter, showing a close up of an employee stocking cigarettes. The employee is a white man in his 40s with lank dark blonde hair and three large pink scars on his forehead and cheek. His name tag says "Stu". He glances over to the side as there is a loud rattling at the door, and offscreen we hear Nandor griping "I thought that would work! Fucking door!" Colin snaps back, "It says push!" Nandor just responds with an "Oh," and the door opens with a ding.

4a. Stu turns around to face the new customers, starting to say "Welcome to-" before Nandor leans in on the counter and cuts him off, wiggling his hand in front of Stu's face. Nandor uses his best hypnosis voice, speech bubble glowing green, to command "Smelly shop worker, you will tell me the whereabouts of the one called Eric-" "Derek," Colin corrects, sidling up to him with a patient smile. "Derek," Nandor finishes. 4b. Reverse shot, extreme closeup of Nandor and Colin in the foreground facing each other, Stu framed between their profiles in the background. Stu looks mildly perturbed but unhypnotized as he replies, "Oh, uh. I'm not allowed to give out employee information." Nandor hisses to Colin, "It's no use! He doesn't want to tell us!" Colin drawls back, "You're really crap at this hypnosis thing, huh?"

5a. Reverse shot, Colin says "Step aside for the pro," and plants a hand on Nandor's chest to move him back, stepping confidently in front to face Stu. Nandor looks ruffled but allows the switch. Colin points upwards and asks, "Say, is that a Panasonic WV-S3131L security camera? I prefer the Argo system myself. You really can't beat the 4K resolution..." 5b. Shot from behind Nandor's head as he waits, Colin and Stu conversing quietly with blank speech bubbles. 5c. Colin turns and rushes back over to Nandor, looking a little panicked as he explains, "Well, that didn't work. He was actually interested in what I was saying!" Nandor puts a hand to his chin thoughtfully and narrows his eyes at Stu, who is standing behind the counter staring at him with a question mark over his head.
