I am in desperate need of someone who also grew up on the direct to video Barbie movies to do a bloodweave Princess and the Pauper-esque AU with me. I have SO many thoughts about how it would work but I have too many other things bouncing around in my brain and also in progress 😭😭😭 I NEED them using magic rings to body swap and also to give Gale braids and pretty robes and Astarion cool thief outfits and lots of knives and Scratch because they both need an animal companion mhmm mhmm mhmm

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude but why would you make Madeleine be a prostitute in your story when she could just be a seamstress as she actually is?
(x)
Ah, you're okay, anon. I had actually thought about that earlier in plotting, but changed my mind on it, and that's ultimately for a few reasons:
I write in closed-POV, which means that whoever I'm writing doesn't really get the chance to interact with other characters outside of their individual experiences. The result of that when creating an AU is if there are characters I want to write into bigger roles, they have to be able to interact with the POV-character on a regular basis.
This fic's going to be alternating closed-POV between Louis and Lestat (so chapter 1 will be Louis, chapter 2 will be Lestat, chapter 3 will be Louis, chapter 4 will be Lestat, etc.) so I need the characters I want to write more to be able to transition between Louis and Lestat's respective storyworlds, which is a bit of a challenge because Louis might run what's effectively an escort service, and Lestat might be a sex worker, but Lestat doesn't work for Louis.
I want Madeleine (and Claudia) to be at these society events and to try and seize power where they can, but ultimately still be on the backfoot due to social standing. If Madeleine's a seamstress, she'll be completely cut out from major parts of the story, and less likely to be transitioning between storyworlds / less useful to the plot in the way that I want her to be.
I want to explore Louis' relationship with Madeleine in a way that reflects the complexity of their power dynamic, and while I could kind of do that with her as a seamstress, I think there are more interesting things to explore for me creatively if she works for him, and that there's a neat thread there to tug in terms of her there as someone beneath him who he doesn't truly know falling in love with someone he cares for as a daughter.
I'm also curious to explore a Lestat-Madeleine dynamic, and having them on a relatively equal footing as high-end sex workers in the Parisian aristocratic social court just seems really fun to me?
Also always here for the unhinged parallels between Louis-Claudia-Lestat-Madeleine in every flavour!!
And look, I call it the courtesan au, but that's just a fancy way of saying it's a sex worker AU, which it is. A few of the characters are going to be sex workers.

I've literally never understood parents who don't let their like... TODDLER age kids play with kids of the "opposite" gender. Like wtf do you think your 3 year old is gonna get up to????? News flash heteros people aren't literally born sexual beings and you don't need to protect your sweet baby girl from the boy from her preschool class.
Which also makes boy/girl friendships later on actually LESS TABOO meaning, if your kid grew up being friends with OTHER GENDERS, they will be less likely to see others solely as potential romantic/sexual objects and can actually have positive normal friendships with people of any sex or gender. Who fucking knew that if you don't treat something as FORBIDDEN then it stops being so appealing, especially if you have a rebellious streak

There was not a second passing after she heard his voice,     turning to him, smile spread widely over both rosy cheeks. How can someone be so elated from such a cheesy comment   ?   A breath taken in, finger tapping on her chest, pointing towards his little princess eagerly. That's her, RIGHT  ? !

Regarding the repeating outfit: How do you keep clothes in good condition after repeated wear? they get very worn out after awhile :(
There are a couple answers to this, but please take them with my supposition that you’re not talking about hard-wearing clothing for specific work/activities. I assume that if you're some hottie in overalls at a wolf sanctuary or whatever, you're probably not turning to a fancy femme on tumblr for garment maintenance advice.
First off, where you buy your clothes is important. Fast fashion is not made to last, it is made to degrade like so much spider silk and to be thrown out with each trend cycle. It can be cared for (see my next point), but it takes effort, and you are actively resisting entropy. Buy well-made clothes secondhand, particularly vintage clothes, and you'll be better off. And when I say vintage, I don't mean pinups and victory curls, I mean good solid mall brands from the 90s, like Nine West, Anne Taylor, Old Navy and Gap. The quality dip in many consumer goods over the past twenty years has been horrifying to watch, and all the brands I listed have been victims, but there are still a lot of old, well-made pieces out there in the thrifting market. Or see if your parents / older family members or friends have anything similar in their closet that they wouldn't mind parting with.
(But ALSO even fast fashion used to be better. I have a sweater from Zara that I bought in the year of our lord 2013, and I wore it to dinner just this week. I've spent years making sure it didn't shrink in the wash and hanging it up and spot cleaning it, and it looks as good as it did the day I bought it. On that note --)
Please please please take care of your clothes. Read the labels inside them for washing instructions, go online to learn more about how to launder the specific material, make sure you don't tumble dry things that will shrink or melt, hang them up so they don't wrinkle, iron them carefully, take in buttons to be repaired at your local seamstress or laundromat, the list goes on. It's a little time consuming, but not complicated.
You'll also be more likely to put in the effort if you get a lot of use out of a garment, and don't feel like a dummy for steam-drying a trendy item that's going to be passé in a few months. Think judiciously about trends - will you be able to incorporate a piece into your personal style once the girlies on tiktok stop wearing it? If so, great. If not, you don't want to be stuck hand washing a popcorn crop top. (Idk if those are back in on the y2k train yet, but as a millennial who shopped at Limited Too, I advise my gen z followers that it's only a matter of time.)
Constant trend cycles, low-quality clothes, items sold for loose change during Shein or Fashion Nova sales, a generation brought up so the idea of "outfit repeating" has any social weight whatsoever: this shit is bad for the planet, and TERRIBLE for exploited workers across the world, particularly in the global south. We can all try for a better reality than this; your habits of personal consumption matter.

Akari having Chinese Ancestry wasn't something that I wasn't gonna push through at first (despite it being in the back of my head for awhile) because I didn't know where it would fit in her story..
Tumblr media
Until I was drawing her backstory and I realized that her Chinese heritage would fit into the context of how her flower haori was made (The motif of Japanese Camellias actually being native to China despite the namesake) and how it signifies the bond she had with her mom. It's not rlly the forefront of Akari's character arc, but I think this little detail added more context as to why she's especially close to her mom.
At first, Akari wasn't very aware, bc of some similarities between the cultures, but she slowly internalized it as something that only she and her mom had. Eventually, Akari would grow up not being able to talk openly about her Chinese heritage since she would very much be discriminated for not being a pure Japanese. Her only link where she gets to explore a fraction of her culture is through her mom.
Akari is close to her dad too (she regrets not spending more time with him) But this is why losing her mom hit her hard. Akari not only lost her family, but the one person that made her feel the most seen, and that made her feel that she is truly alone.
That's also why Akari hates being lonely. She knows the inherent feeling of loneliness. It's why she gravitates to other lonely people as well.
Well now I made myself sad thinking about the tragic backstory for my oc that I wrote myself! 😃👍🏻

Saw a video and it got me in a mood so i'm making this post.
I don't think people who have never been fat knows how fucking hard it is to find clothing for bigger bodies.
The first issue is finding stuff in your actual size. Because time after time after time and time again I've gone to a store and they only had small and medium sizes. Not even large. And this was not for a few clothes, no. It was for MOST clothes that I found interesting. And then the ones that were marked as large were simply not big enough.
And I know that the reason for that is that brands simply won't make clothes for fat people. It's that because it surely isn't because the large size is selling out fast. They just don't do it. And some people have the nerve to say 'well brands are not obligated to make sizes for everyone' yeah sure, but also, I can't walk naked on the street can I?
Like I don't get it. 'oh but we want our clothes to fit a especific body' so fucking make clothes that are supposed to fit bigger bodies. Doesn't have a to be a whole ass collection.
And then we get on the second problem which is making clothes for plus size people that are ugly as hell. It's always the same stuff: ugly florals, animal print that belongs in another decade, cold shoulders, that weird extra fabric at the end of a shirt to hide the belly, or just black/muted colors.
Like fun fact. If you have big boobs, the hardest thing in the world is trying to find a bra that comes in a color that isn't white, black or beige. Because trust me, I've spent 3 hours walking in the shopping mall and I couldn't find anything that fit my breasts that was like pink (and in that situation I needed a pink bra for a play).
It feels like most clothes made for plus sized people are designed with like 50+ year old white women in mind, and not even that demographic of people are wearing those clothes (my mom is a plus sized 50+ year old white woman and often talks about how ugly some clothes made for people her size are).
It's hard trying to develop your own sense of style when none of the clothes around you are in your size, and when they do, they are just not good looking to you.
But you wanna know what's the down right worst part? Do you know what fucking brand has clothes that look good and are amde for bigger bodies?
The goddamn cancer on this earth that is Shein.
I fucking hate shein. Fast fashion is killin the fashion industry, they literally have people working as slaves and many influecers buy shein clothes by the bulk only to then throw it in the trash. Shein is awful.
But. Unfortunetly, shein is the only place that I found that had clothes that fit me and looked good. I don't like that. I avoided buying from shein for the longest time ever, but jesus christ, when you can't find clothes anywhere else you get desperate.
I tried looking for other places. I tried looking at my local clothing stores and everything was too small for me. I tried looking at online small bussinesses but they either didn't make my size, or it was sold out, or the prices were very high. Tried looking at thrift stores, also didn't find my size.
I try not to buy too much from shein or to spend long periods of time in between buying, because again, I feel bad about buying there. I don't want to buy from there.
Clothing brands/stores gotta do better. And I don't think that's asking for too much.

so much scholarship on "self-orientalism" is garbage. i don't think there's a way to fully separate what, when, why, or how directors and authors do this but I watched Dai Sijie's Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress last night and here is a white Italian author's take on it
Once translated into Chinese, the description loses its attractive power, inverting a mechanism that does not seem to work properly in the author’s mother tongue. The author employs a similar strategy when describing the protagonist’s signature, yet without explicitly saying his name: Ma Jianling (Dai 2000, 138). Once again, when translated into Chinese, the mysterious aura the author tried to create around the signatures disappears, forcing the translator to reveal the concealed identity of the characters that composed them (Dai 2002, 126; Dai 2003, 119). Consequently, the author’s extensive self-orientalism (Chevaillier 2010, 71) succumbs to the rules of the target language, neutralizing the foreignizing effect and substituting it with a redundant and pedantic description of the names.
which like is so um... wrong because the Mandarin-language movie has an introductory scene where Ma Jianling introduces his name by explaining to the villagers why there is a drawing of a horse, sword, and bell in his possession representing his name. the idea that the phrase is supposed to be an element of mystery rather than, perhaps, an element of familiarity to Chinese speaking readers is so ??? if it didn't work and was only for orientalizing the Chinese language, why was the scene reworked visually and put into the movie (which Dai adapted and directed)?

[Roll 1d100 = 41] Feed Me, Seymour: Iago turns into a potted plant (perhaps a tulip) until the start of their next turn whenever. While a plant, they are incapacitated and have vulnerability to all damage. If they drop to 0 HP, their pot breaks, and their form reverts. Nerves do funny things to someone with wild magic and poor social skills, so Iago's attempt to ask their new neighbor for a cup of sugar goes almost immediately south. The following knock on Babette's door is a bit of a mystery, seeing as there's nothing but a lone flower on her doorstep.
Tumblr media
   𝙻𝙴𝚃𝚃𝙴𝚁𝚂 .   unprompted interactions ────────────────────────
Never one to leave a knocking individual waiting,      the seamstress was quick to open the door, only to be faced with . . . nobody   ?   A look to the left, right, leaning out the door frame before her foot accidentally nudges against a flower pot. Now that was curious. Did this visitor forget his potted plant here   ?   Maybe it was a gift from a secret admirer   ?
After making sure there really was nobody around she could let in or at least greet, Babette lifted the mystery plant, checking if there was any note on it. Nothing.
She figured perhaps her sister ordered flowers for the shop. Marion does so love tulips   —   probably it was her doing.
Tumblr media
❝ No need to stay out here, little flower. We don't want any stray dog to . . . water you. ❞     Yes, she was speaking to this presumably decor, carrying it towards the shop's counter  &  finally setting it down. Such a pretty thing. Why didn't her sibling order more   ?
Happily taking a few steps back, the hexblood searched for the watering can, which usually lurked around here.     ❝ MARION   ?   DID WE ORDER FLOWERS   ? ❞
