This is all one hundred percent true. Until my knees went bad from overworking my body (REMEMBER! REST PERIODS AND PROPER PROTEIN INTAKE ARE ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTHY MUSCLE RECOVERY AND JOINT CARE!) I was a hobbyist powerlifter and hobbyist combat sport athlete (Primarily HEMA but some boxing, too.) from the age of 14 to 22. Bodybuilding advice is generally skewed heavily in favor of less effective "Show muscle" that looks visually attractive. If you want to see what the actual strongest people on earth look like? Powerlifters. Google image search (remember to add -ai to your search terms!) "Powerlifter" or "Full Strength Strongman Contestant" or something of the sort. Those are powerlifters. Many of them are older than "Prime athletic age" and count as "Morbidly obese" by BMI standards because they're huge, heavy, and muscular, and because they properly feed their bodies they have a layer of fat over the top of their muscle. Here's a little tidbit, too. Muscle is heavier than fat. The reason exercise doesn't make you lose weight is because you're building muscle. The reason many bodybuilders weigh in light? Make note of if their muscles are standing out at rest or not. If you can see someone's six pack when they're not actively flexing that means they're doing something that the Pro Wrestling industry calls "Water fasting" to paper over the fact that they're dehydrated. I was 200 pounds of powerlifting muscle at 15 years old, standing five foot nine inches, and I was the third place record holder in Weight Training and Conditioning elective classes at my middle school for deadlifting. A doctor told me I was morbidly obese and wouldn't survive the anesthesia for a vision saving eye surgery and I had to get a second opinion about that. Legitimately shocking that standards and opinions haven't improved since then. I feel like I've gotten lost in the sauce and hijacked a bit from OP's point, but my point was that "Standards of fatness" even apply to the healthy and physically fit if they don't fit a very specific, VERY UNHEALTHY aesthetic, and that if you are as I was back then, we should be lifting up those who are picking up their pickaxes onto our shoulders and handing them megaphones to shout through.
Me: Exercise does not cause weight loss. This is a fact that has been demonstrated so robustly in research that even doctors, who hate and fear evidence, are grudgingly starting to admit this.
Someone reading that post: Cool, but have you considered that exercise leads to weight loss?
Me: I am going to eat you

Fiyero And The Wizard
The Emerald City glimmered in the fading sunlight as Fiyero sat by the window of the train, his excitement nearly tangible. He had received a personal invitation to meet the Wizard of Oz himself, a rare and extraordinary honor. Elphaba had warned him against trusting the Wizard, but curiosity and hope for answers had driven him to accept the invitation. Perhaps the Wizard wanted to make amends for the chaos he had caused in their lives.
The train screeched to a halt at the station, and Fiyero stepped off, greeted by the bustling streets of the Emerald City. He marveled at the shimmering green buildings and the vibrant crowd as he made his way to the Wizardâs castle. The guards at the entrance stepped aside without question, and the massive doors creaked open, revealing a grand, candlelit hall.
At the far end, the Wizard stood, draped in his signature robes. His gloved hands clutched an ancient, ornate bookâthe Grimmery, a tome of forbidden magic.
âFiyero!â the Wizard greeted with a disarming smile. âIt is an honor to finally meet you face to face.â
Fiyero approached cautiously, bowing slightly out of respect. âThe honor is mine, sir. But why have you called me here?â
The Wizardâs smile grew, though something unsettling lingered in his eyes. âYou have a charm about you, Fiyero. A natural charisma that I believe the people of Oz need... desperately.â He gestured to the Grimmery. âI have a proposition. Join me, and together we can bring order to this land. We can rid it of chaos and those who threaten our way of life. Starting with Elphaba.â
Fiyeroâs chest tightened at the mention of her name. He shook his head firmly. âI wonât betray her. I wonât be a part of whatever youâre planning.â
The Wizard sighed, his expression darkening. âI had hoped you would see reason. No matter. There are other ways.â
Before Fiyero could react, a high-pitched screech echoed through the hall. A winged monkey darted out from the shadowsâChesery, the Wizardâs loyal servant. In a blur, Chesery pounced, restraining Fiyero with alarming strength. The monkeyâs claws dug into his arms as ropes appeared, binding him tightly.
âWhat are you doing?â Fiyero struggled, his voice laced with panic.
The Wizard ignored him, opening the Grimmery and flipping through its pages. Ancient symbols glowed on the parchment, and his voice grew low and guttural as he began to chant in an unfamiliar language
Fiyero watched in horror as the Wizardâs transformation unfolded before his eyes. The older manâs features shifted and smoothed like clay under an unseen sculptorâs hands. Wrinkles faded, leaving a youthful glow, and his once-proud frame shrank slightly, adjusting to match Fiyeroâs lean build. His gray hair lightened in streaks, cascading into shades of rich brown and golden blond.
As the glow of magic dissipated, the Wizard stepped back from the Grimmery, his face now identical to Fiyeroâs. It was perfectâeerily perfect. The bound prince couldnât look away, dread curdling in his stomach as if he were staring into a twisted reflection of himself.
The Wizard opened his eyes, catching his new appearance in the grand mirror before him. He let out a low chuckle, his voice now Fiyeroâs smooth, confident tone. âOh, this... this is exquisite.â
He tilted his head to one side, examining himself with almost theatrical enthusiasm. Running a hand over his jawline, he smirked. âSuch symmetry. No wonder the ladiesâand perhaps even a few gentlemenâfall over themselves for you. This face alone is enough to make kingdoms bow, isnât it?â
Fiyero snarled, straining against the ropes. âStop this! Youâll never get away with it!â
âOh, but I already have,â the Wizard shot back, not even sparing him a glance. He was too busy admiring his reflection, tracing his cheekbones and brushing his fingers over his lips. âAnd these lips...â He let out an exaggerated sigh, puckering them playfully. âSo... kissable. Do you practice this in the mirror, Fiyero? Or does it just come naturally?â
He turned sharply, striding toward Fiyero with newfound grace. His movements were fluid, confidentâa predator who knew his prey was already caught. Standing inches away, he gestured to his chest with a flourish. âAnd look at this,â he said, tugging his collar slightly to reveal the firm definition beneath his shirt. âYour bodyâs built like itâs been sculpted by the gods themselves. How do you find the time to stay this... perfect?â
Fiyero clenched his jaw, refusing to give the Wizard the satisfaction of a response.
But the Wizard was far from finished. His hands traveled down to his stomach, where he gave an exaggerated gasp. âOh, my! These abs!â He patted his stomach mockingly, then flexed, his smirk widening as he felt the firm ridges under his fingertips. âI didnât realize you were hiding such a masterpiece under those princely clothes. No wonder Elphaba canât resist you. Who could?â
Fiyeroâs struggles grew more frantic. âYouâre a coward, hiding behind my face! Youâll never be me!â
The Wizard barked a laugh, stepping back into the light to examine his thighs and legs. âOh, Fiyero, I donât need to âbeâ you. I only need to wear you.â He leaned down, running his hands over his thighs and giving another exaggerated whistle. âAnd these legs. Strong. Sturdy. Built for running... or perhaps something else entirely?â He waggled his eyebrows, his mocking laugh echoing through the hall.
âYouâre disgusting,â Fiyero spat, his voice shaking with fury.
âDisgusting?â The Wizard tilted his head in mock confusion before grinning slyly. âNo, my dear boy. Disgusting is what Iâd call letting a body like this go to waste. But donât worry. Iâll make the most of it.â
He turned his attention to his backside, giving it an exaggerated pat. âAnd this,â he said, smirking as he glanced over his shoulder. âWell, letâs just say itâll be the talk of the Emerald City soon enough. Iâm sure even the guards will be doing double-takes. Tell me, Fiyeroâhave you ever noticed how perfectly this uniform frames... everything?â
Fiyero seethed, his face burning with anger and humiliation.
The Wizard bent closer, his voice dropping to a low, taunting whisper. âIt must feel awful, doesnât it? Watching yourselfâyour body, your charmâbecome mine. Knowing thereâs nothing you can do to stop me.â He stood upright again, laughing softly. âAnd the best part? When Iâm done, the world will thank me for it. Theyâll love me. Theyâll love you.â
Turning back to the mirror, the Wizard struck a dramatic pose, adjusting the collar of his blue and gold outfit with a flourish. âWell, Fiyero, itâs been delightful getting to know myself.â He laughed at his own joke. âBut I think itâs time for you to disappear.â
âChesery!â he called, his tone snapping into command. The winged monkey appeared from the shadows, bowing low. âTake him away. Somewhere no one will ever find him. Somewhere heâll have plenty of time to think about just how perfect I look.â
Chesery seized Fiyero, dragging him toward the shadows despite his desperate struggles.
The Wizardânow Fiyeroâwatched them go, his smirk widening as the real Fiyeroâs protests faded into silence. Turning to the mirror one last time, he admired his stolen reflection, running a hand over his hair and tilting his head with a grin.
âOz,â he whispered to himself, his voice laced with triumph. âYouâre about to meet your perfect hero.â
With that, he turned on his heel and strode toward the castle doors, radiating the effortless charm that only Fiyero Tiggular could muster.
There would be no resistance, no rebellion. No happy ending for anyone.
He had succeeded.
And the world of Oz would never be the same.

Hello, could you please do mihawk, benn, Rayleigh and shanks x f reader who is a lot younger? (like early 20s)
Younger S/O - Shanks & Mihawk
Content: female reader, age gap, younger (but not minor ofc) s/o
Notes* Hey! So I tried a few times to write for Rayleigh and Benn, but I just donât know their characters like that- so here's the two I know I can do! I apologize for it being a little shorter than normal, I opened up requests and then immediately got cursed with writer's block again
Shanks
Shanks definitely does not look his age, so when youâd spotted him at the bar all those years ago, you had no reservations about flirting with him
He was totally into it, too. A young, pretty girl showing interest in him? Hell yes
At first, it was a simple fling. But then Shanks continued to return to your island again and again, seeking you out over and over until it wasnât just coincidence anymore
You two became a couple, but on the low. Shanks didnât need any idiot bandits, pirate or marines targeting you to get back at him
In the beginning of your relationship with him, he was very careful about the power dynamic between you two
He was a powerful man and an older one at that, so he makes extra sure that during the time you two spend together, he takes care of you very well
Of course, that doesnât mean he doesnât tease you!
Around the crew or people he feels can take a joke, he calls you his sugar baby
You hate his dumb jokes, but you love him, and he loves you
Mihawk
Mihawk is the type of man that he doesnât care who you are or where you come from
Age would not factor into his views of his wife. If he loves you, he loves you
While heâs not always the type to show that outright with words or constant physical affection, he prefers to show it with acts of service
Respect is his top priority as well- doesnât matter the age. You will be respected and regarded highly as his wife
Heâs a protector, but sometimes overly so. Thatâs where the age gap gets him- he often assumes that you need help or company with anything from household chores to a walk on the island (but to be fair, the island can be dangerous
He also likes to use old slang, which sometimes leaves you baffled as to its meaning
Itâs actually pretty funny having to ask him what the hell heâs talking about when he says things like, âA bird in the hand is worth two in the bushâ
Itâs one of the rare moments when you can watch him laugh, because the sheer confusion on your face amuses him
He gives you your own space in the castle as well. He values his own solitude at times, so heâs sure you want yours at times, too

I'm really sorry you and your sister are dealing with that
(no pressure to publish this, not that there should ever be pressure to publish an ask if you don't want to, of course, but just wanted to say I hope you're doing okay)
Ah, thank you, anon, it's okay. It's been a while now (court moves slooow), but we're getting hopefully close to the end. She filed in Family Court December 2022, and we've had about five interim hearings with final trial (finally) scheduled over four days next month, so fingers crossed! But yeah, it's been A Time. He's financially and emotionally abusive against my sister, and both those things as well as medically negligent against their children (who are only six and eight and both have special needs), so it's been....rough. To say the least.
But on a lighter note, have one of my new favourite photos I took of my nephews at the jellyfish enclosure at the aquarium last month!
#i DO feel like i have an honourary family law degree at this point haha#and i think i've got at least three different creative projects that are coming out of it because the levels of insight#you develop#is just#yes#wow#A Lot#i hhaaaated the idea when i was younger that you became a better writer as you get older#like i think i genuinely did have this mindset like age has nothing to do with talent#and i kind of do still think that#i think there are young writers who are wildly good#but it's also impossible to articulate the absolute wilderness that is humanity that you get deeper into as you age#that makes me sound a hundred lmao i'm 33#but i think in particular there's this pivot point when the people you love start to have families of their own with people who are#so removed from your way of being#and sometimes that's amazing and sometimes that's awful#and what comes out in the wash of that is just a perfect mix of generational trauma AND generational enabling#privilege and expectation and mindsets around familial roles#and the sudden and horrible reveal that you have had children with a man who will be diagnosed a destructive narcissist#and who will reject the idea of your children having disabilities because how could he - a perfect man - father children with disabilities#and will turn all that loathing onto a woman he once said he loved because he decides she is the defective one who gave him broken children#which is literally how he thinks#it's soooo#yeah#anyway my sister is amazing and my nephews are perfect#and honestly it's been special in a lot of ways because y'know i'm a middle child she's my big sister#and we've had a tumultuous relationship over the years but this has honestly made us closer than we've ever been in our lives#and i'm proud of that but i'm really proud of the relationship i have with those little boys#and i think need hope we're going to win and she'll be able to move herself and the boys here even as the odds are stacked against us SO#i WILL also be calling on the universe / heavens / everyone's good vibes next month

Ah, yes- the BLUES and the REDS, not the REDS and the BLUES, sure would be neat if that wasn't so interchangeably confusing haha (I'm making fun of myself for not paying attention... this is exactly why I call Temple's group the Rues and Bleds!)
Anyway, here-
Temple; Never got the lead role in any school plays, and that sure didn't stay stuck in the back of his mind forever (yes it did). Was OBSESSED with Yu Gi Oh as a kid. Hair is naturally light brown and curly, but after the incident of Biff's death, he went through a whole thing about dying his hair darker with one streak of white in it to be dramatic. Is actually pretty good with kids (woulda-coulda been the best godfather to Biff and Georgina's kid). Was a little squeamish around blood already, even when he was younger. Wants to paint his nails, but sucks at it (official Cronut duty)
Biff; The only person who was a fan of all the "weird" oreo flavors (something Grif would've used as evidence to prove they are VERY different if they ever met), also genuinely licked black licorice and cadnycorn. As kids, his parents let him collect a lot of comics that Temple's family were more strict about, so they'd only read them at Biff's house. Not really into horror movies, but liked spooky books (more of a soft spot for animated emotional movies). Had short, sandy-blonde hair
Surge; Actually younger than his Blood Gulch counterpart (somewhere in his late 30s-early 40s, still a bit older than the other guys, but not exactly a "gruff old man"). Not actually a Colonel OR a Sargent (he was indeed leader of his Red Base, and was fine with people mistaking him as a Sargent because it sounded similar to his name, but his rank was lower. once they all form their own team for revenge, he just promotes himself Colonel for the heck of it). Failed medical training even worse than Doc. Acts brave in battle, but if left alone, turns into a coward. Is a natural red-head (Sarge would be jealous)
Gene; Outwardly a suck-up, but no actual admiration for any authority figure (HATES Surge. Wishes Temple was more susceptible to compliments, Gene likes him as a leader just slightly more, and admires the effort of being a whole VILLAIN). He's almost similar to Felix, but absolutely NO charming social skills, and far less threatening without back-up or an absurd amount of weapons. Would be one of those people who home-brews and is really obnoxious about it. Used to have a reoccurring nightmare of the evil penguin from Wallace and Gromit trying to Get Him. Loves horror movies. He was actually the newer rookie on his Red Team
Cronut; Out of armor, he's the shortest guy in Temple's group (and although he's a decent fighter, he's not as physically strong as Donut). Has this weird crush on Gene, in which he "flirts" by picking on him (like kids in middle school. Gene doesn't really get it). Also picks on Bucky, but by tricking him with wordplay (Cronut pulls a "Bugs Bunny" on him all the time, and does the "It's not Opposite Day, which means it IS Opposite Day" thing just to confuse him). While he has no personal stakes in their big "mission", he still fans the flames of Temple's revenge because he wants to see more drama
Buckey; Used to be so incredibly repressed and self-isolated growing up, and is a now an obnoxious creep, just a total reverse. Too contrary for his own good, even if somebody agrees with him, he'll spin it into an argument, then complain that other people are too sensitive. However, he also doesn't really hold a grudge (short attention span). Has the best aim in the entire group, probably could have been a lethal sniper (if he ever shut up). The only person, ironically, who put up with his BS long enough to get through a conversation with him was Biff when one or the got temporarily captured (Temple would be very upset, but Buckey hasn't brought it up. again, short attention span, forgot he almost had a real friend)
Loco; Got shuffled around a few other groups before being on Blue Team with Temple, with the others being a little too good at the "fighting to the death" thing... Loco liked the Desert Gulch group, because he thought he finally found some people who were so bad at hurting each other, they'd all just be OK (and then they lost Biff). Loco knows Biff was Temple's best friend, but still considers Temple HIS best friend, and is fine with that. Had big plans to help everybody get along better once they were done with the mission and things settled down. Never got to have pets as a kid (just didn't have the chance or space for animals at home). Doing laundry is comfort activity that helped him relax (thank goodness, none of these other guys remembers to do it). Has slightly poor eyesight, but doesn't realize he needs glasses
drop ur blues and reds thoughts or hcs please im desperate

My ankle journey
I am sharing this with all you good people on the dash because I am so fucking mad it took so long for me to learn it and if I can spare one (1) person the agony it will be worth it.
So for like...oh, 8 or 9 months, I've been struggling with pain/inflammation/tendinitis in my left Achilles tendon. I don't know what caused it. It just started up (welcome to middle age, this shit happens). It wasn't severe enough to be debilitating, but it was annoying and limiting. It was also intermittent, in that some days it would be very painful and other days hardly at all. The kind of shoe I was wearing affected it a lot.
Now, I have bone spurs on both heels (it's just a thing that happens as you get older sometimes). I'm also aware that heel pain is usually the result of tight calf muscles that pull and irritate the tendon. I tried stretching that calf muscle. You know the stretch, this bitch right here:
I did it all the time. I also iced the ankle after walking for awhile, hoping to avoid inflammation. Results were...unsatisfying.
I went to:
A chiropractor
A podiatrist
A physical therapist
A bodywork coach
They all gave me some variation on the "strengthen your calf muscle, stretch your calf muscle" advice. I continued doing this without results.
I was getting frustrated, and a little afraid that this was just my life now. Finally, I thought...maybe some targeted massage might help. I asked for rec on a local FB site and was pointed to a woman who specializes in therapeutic massage including cupping, etc.
I went to her a week ago.
She spent over half our first session working on my left lower leg. Within about 10 minutes of making my eyes water, she uttered the sentence I did not know I had been waiting to hear:
"Oh, it's your soleus."
Excuse me, what?
"It's your soleus that's the culprit. It's all tied up and stiff." She started digging into it and I felt literal sparks run up my leg as she released adhesions and got the muscle moving a little. When she finally put the leg down, it felt like it was on fire with all the blood rushing into it.
She said, "You'll need to stretch your soleus. It'll clear up, but it'll take a bit of time - tendons take ages to heal."
But I HAVE been stretching.
"No, you haven't. The usual straight-leg calf stretch only stretches the gastrocnemius, that's the big belly muscle in your calf. That's not your problem. That stretch doesn't stretch the soleus. Don't worry, I'll show you how to stretch it."
My mind is spinning.
So here are the muscles in question:
The gastroc (as the pros call it) just attaches down the back but the soleus runs underneath it from the knee around the side to the heel. The lower part above the ankle is where it typically gets tight and forms adhesions.
To stretch it, you do the same calf thing where you put your foot back and press your heel to the ground, but you have to do it with your KNEE BENT:
The bent knee keeps the gastroc from engaging. It's one of those selfish muscles (like traps) - if you give it an inch, it'll just take over and prevent other muscles from working or stretching. There are other ways to stretch the soleus but this is the easiest and you can literally do it anywhere. I've been doing it while standing and waiting for things (the elevator to come, the toast to toast). You just put the heel back and bend the knee. It's kind of like curtseying.
The minute I did this stretch, I could FEEL where it was pulling on my tendon. I knew that THIS had been the problem.
The massage therapist also told me to stop icing my heel. She said icing is for an acute injury, but a more chronic aggravation needs heat, to increase blood flow for healing. She recommended elevation with heat every day (I've been doing it in bed during "phone before bed" time).
I have been doing the soleus stretch at least half a dozen times a day for almost a week, and the ankle is at least 70% better. It is still a little tight and tender, but the improvement is significant. I think a few more weeks will have it feeling normal.
I am...blown away by this. This massage therapist was able to pinpoint an issue in only a few minutes that eluded all the other professionals I saw. I can't wait to go back to her and have her solve all my other problems, tbh.

AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBER â GETO SUGURU.
kinktober day two â overstimulation ; find masterlist here
synopsis. befriending nanako and mimiko has its perksâlike fucking their father, for example. suguru might have aged over the years, but that doesn't mean he's lost his touch. don't believe him? that's okayâhe can always just show you instead
length. 5.3k words (bro this fic was agonizing)
contents. minors do not interact, fem! reader, dilf! suguru, college au (reader is a student), age gaps (20+ difference), jealous suguru, teasing, cunnilingus, fingering, edging, nipple play, unprotected sex, multiple orgasms, overstimulation, creampie, pet names (baby, sweetheart, princess, angel)
notes. this took me so long bc i hate it so im posting it and running away to play genshin to slave away for primos
most people can tell their best friends everything. not you, thoughâyou have a secret. a dirty, shameful, horrible little secret, in fact.
no one knows that every chance you get, every small little moment you can possibly squeeze in, you fuck your two best friendsâ fatherâand itâs going to stay that way, unknown and forever hidden. suguru is young as far as parents go, just barely in his twenties when heâs found himself a single father of two, but that doesnât mean heâs not too old for you. and it especially doesnât mean that itâs not inappropriate to fuck the man that raised your two closest friends.
you meet nanako and mimiko during your freshman year of collegeâthe rest is history. the first time you spend the night at their place, suguru (he insists you call him that on your first meeting) is overjoyed that his girls have someone as lovely as you.
who wouldnât be? youâre smart, well-mannered, respectable, and incredibly studious. what a perfect role model for his girlsâafter all, every fatherâs worst nightmare is his sweet, precious daughters venturing off to the real world. men are dogsâsuguru should know. theyâre sleazy and prey on young women who are naive and unsuspecting, taking advantage of their hopefulness before completely destroying their innocence. suguru canât bear the idea of his perfect little girls becoming victims of such sinister behaviorâbut thatâs all quelled when he meets you.
but he never thought, not even for one second, that heâd become one of those men.
those older men who fuck girls half their ageâthe girls that are barely in their twenties and still donât even really understand how taxes work. the girls that have just started to learn how to hold their alcohol and can only recently buy it legally. the girls who donât realize how complicated adulthood can be, just barely spreading their wings and learning what itâs like to be free.
suguru has always found those men deplorable. theyâre the awful, disgusting, untamed vermin of societyâwomen must be protected from them at all costs.
but now? wellâŚ.now heâs one of themâand he finds, even as disgusted with himself as he is from time to time, he has little regrets.
not when youâre sprawled under him, hands tracing over his bare chest, feeling the soft skin under your palms in wonder. suguru, though heâs not let himself go by any means, is past his primeâhe still frequents the gym, and he has more time to go now that the girls are gone most of the day, but heâs not immune to the effects of aging.
his hair has more than a few strands of white sprinkled in now; nanako makes sure to remind him not to pull them out unless he wants more. heâs still managed to keep the abs he was once so proud of in his youth, but theyâre still not as hardâlayered over a slight belly that he canât seem to get rid of no matter what he tries. his skin is a bit looser, and his eyes have slight wrinkles in the corners of them, but despite it all, suguru still looks as handsome as ever.
heâs aged well, still looks remarkably young for men his age, and still looks like that dashing young man he once was who stole hearts. in fact, he still hears about his looks, especially from nanako and mimikoâs friendsâheâs always chuckled to himself and shook his head in amusement.
thatâs your dad? god, heâs so hot.
what? heâs single? oh my gosh, do you need a mom?
i canât believe heâs never been marriedâwomen in his generation donât deserve him. iâll take him off their hands.
wait, do you have pictures of him when he was younger?
oh my god, heâs so fine. are you sure heâs in his forties?
nanako and mimiko, bless their hearts, have always crinkled their noses at theâŚless than proper comments theyâve had to witness about their father. in fact, theyâve watched teachers practically throw themselves onto suguru at parent-teacher conferences. itâs bothersomeâa little disturbing to hear their friends talk about all the things theyâd let their dad, of all people, do to them.
but you? you donât make unhinged comments. they appreciate that.
but if only they knewâŚ
if only they knew that sometimes, like right now, when youâre spending the night, you donât actually sleepâinstead, you sneak off to their fatherâs room, lay on his mattress under his body, and feel his touch. you can feel him, hard and throbbing in his sweats as his clothed cock presses against your thighâbut he takes his time with you, and doesnât do anything about the clear arousal pooling between your legs just yet.Â
instead, he focuses on remembering your bodyâitâs been a while, after all. he hasnât felt your hips, hasnât tasted your skin, hasnât heard your voice.Â
âmissed you,â suguru breathes, hovering over you as you hum, nipping at your skin as his nose brushes along your neck. your hand is playing with his hair, twisting long, black and white strands along your fingers. âhavenât seen you in a bit, angel.â
âiâve had midterms,â you murmur.
suguru knowsânanako and mimiko have been studying for them themselves. heâs more than a little disappointed that you havenât come over to study with them yet. but then, just the other night, mimiko mentions youâve been spending your time with a boy at the library, sharing a table as you lean over his shoulder to look at his laptop. nanako giggles that you might have finally gotten yourself a boyfriend. mimiko hums and nods as she murmurs itâs about time.
suguru swallows down every bite of dinner with an aftertaste of bile that night.
a boyâa boy? youâve been skipping coming over to study with the girls (and, by default, seeing him) just to study with some boy? whatâs got your attention on the guy so badly? why would you break the routine youâve had for the last few semesters for someone you just recently met? have you finally started to realize that this is a mistake? is suguru a mistake?
he thinks maybe not, now that youâre back in his bedâbut he still has too many unanswered questions.Â
âso iâve heard,â he says lowly, âiâve also heard thereâs a certain boy on your radar.â he smiles bitterly, pulling away from your neck to stare at you with those dark, sharp eyes of his. âa much younger, and fitting match for you, i suppose.â
you roll your eyes, snorting.
âis that what nanako and mimiko have told you? honestly, those two,â you huff fondly, âi told them already. heâs just my partner for a presentation. weâre practicing.â
âoh?â suguru raises a browâand then he shivers lightly when you lean up and kiss his jaw, eyes fluttering shut at your touch.
âyes,â you giggle, âno need to be jealous of someone half your age, you know.â
âthatâs exactly why iâm jealous,â he breathes, leaning in to kiss you softly.
your lips taste like honeyâprobably sweeter, in fact. they drip with that decadent, saccharine taste of youth. he feels twenty again every time he kisses you, feels not a day older than his glory days.
âoh, you poor thing,â you grin, cupping his face as you scatter kisses along his cheeks and nose, thumb tracing the skin. fuck, is this what it feels like to be in love? it makes him feel so young, so free, and hopeful for the future. when was the last time he felt this way? âhave you been losing sleep over my nonexistent college boyfriend?â
âwell, kids your age fool around quite a bit,â he says in that father tone that he uses on nanako and mimiko, âwhat was i supposed to think?â
youâve heard that tone so many times before; the one where he talks like he knows better, like heâs wiser, like heâs aware of something youâre not.Â
girls, make sure you share your location with meâi need to find you in case anything happens. itâs for your own safety, end of discussion.
make sure you watch over your drinks, okay? men these days take every chance they get to spike them when youâre not looking. mimiko, i was your age once, too. iâve seen this happen plenty.
donât walk alone in the streets at night. call me. iâll pick you upâno, nanako, itâs not lame. the streets are dangerous at night. there are creeps, you know.
donât get into any boyâs cars, girls. you never know whatâll happen; one mistake is all it takes to ruin your lifeâhey, donât roll your eyes at me. one day, youâll understand iâm right.
âiâm not a kid,â you pout, and then, smugly this time, you wiggle your brows. âdidâya lose sleep over my imaginary boyfriend? you need plenty of sleep at your age, yâknow.â
âno, youâre not a kid,â suguru agrees, âyouâre a brat.â and then heâs back to pressing those hot, open-mouthed, hungry kisses along your jaw, humming in delight when you angle your head to give him better access.Â
sometimes, itâs fun to get under suguruâs skinâitâs fun to break that carefully built, mature patience of his, pulling a twitch of his eye and a furrow of his brow from him. so, you grin widely as you murmur, âwho knows? maybe heâd fuck betterâmore stamina, yâknow?â
itâs supposed to just tease him, to make him glare at you unimpressed so you can giggle and kiss between his browsâbut suguru stills at that, painfully stiff for a moment before he bites at your skin. hard.Â
âoh yeah?â he hisses, his voice low and dangerous as he pulls away to glare down at you, âyou think so? what, you think an old man like me canât fuck you long enough?â
you donât get a chance to replyânot before he pulls your pants down your waist to reveal your soaked panties, pulling a hum from him as he grins at the damp patch of fabric. his fingers circle over your clit for a moment, right over the cloth, making your breath hitch as you buck into his touch.Â
âsuguruââ
âlook at that,â he chuckles, âwearing my favorite one, huh? canât fuck you that bad if you try your best to impress me. isnât that what you wanted? is that what you were thinking when you put these on before coming over? how precious,â he murmursâhe speaks so condescending, so knowingly, as if heâs read your mind just by looking at the red lace covering your dripping cunt. you cover your face in humiliation, but he grabs your wrists and pins them over your head, clicking his teeth in disapproval.Â
part of you knows you should quit while you canâthe other part? wellâŚit wants to test the limits a bit longer. suguru has never been so easy to rile up, you want to indulge in it for just a bit longer if you can help it.Â
âwell,â you huff, âwhatâre you waiting for, then? donât tell me the age has slowed you downââ
âyou really donât know when to quit, do you?â he says in a low snarl, âfine, you want me to hurry up? you got it, princess.â
it all happens before you can even registerâone moment, youâre grinning at him with mischief in your eyes; the next second, he has you in nothing but your bra, bare in his bed as he pulls your legs apart and leans close to your pussy.
âyou know the thing about guys your age,â he hums, toying with your clit lazily as you gasp with a twitch, âis that they really donât know how to take care of anyone but themselves. guess they just donât have enough experience to really figure it out.â
his lips latch onto your clit, sucking before he rolls his tongue over the sensitive bud as his fingers sink into your core, pushing past your folds and stretching you open. itâs slowâdeliberately so, in fact. it makes your head spin, and your fingers curl into the bed sheets as you pant.Â
âsuguru, m-moreââ
âdonât worry,â he coos, pulling away from you to grin up at your glossy eyes, âyouâll get plenty, baby. weâll see if youâve got the stamina. yâknow, since youâre so young.â
his lips are back to wrap around your clit, fingers sinking and curling exactly where youâre most sensitiveâsuguru finds your sweet spots instantly the first time he has you sprawled under him. didnât even take a moment of trial, just knew where to touch and kiss to have you unravel in his hold. that much still hasnât changedâhis fingertips press against the sensitive spot in the back of your walls, pulling pretty little whines from you as his tongue flicks over your clit.Â
itâs always been a blessing that nanako and mimikoâs room is across the houseâhad they been closer, they might hear the mewl you let out as his fingers bully into you faster, unforgiving as they brush against your walls and build the ache up between your legs until itâs about to burst.Â
âs-suguru, âm close, so, so closeââ
âalready?â he gasps, chuckling as he presses a kiss to your clit with a sly grin, âthought you had more in you than that, baby. so youthfulâfigured youâd last a bit longer.â
heâs mean about itârubs it in your face some more that youâre so close so fast before he pulls his fingers away and doesnât even give you the satisfaction of falling apart on his digits. it makes you sob, hips bucking up to chase the friction of his fingers, but heâs already gone, leaving your walls empty and fluttering around nothing.
âno,â your voice breaks, ân-no, so close, please. i wantââ
âthatâs what he wouldâve done,â suguru hums, âpulled out before you even finished. thatâs what guys your age always doâthey donât know how to make girls finish. you ever had that problem with me?â
âno,â you say quickly, shaking your head. youâre a pretty little thing, he thinksâpouty, wobbly lips and those glossy eyes as you sniffle. âno, you always make me cumâplease, i wanna cum, sugu.â
âyeah?â he pouts with faux sympathy, âdidnât feel good, huh? feels better when i take care of you, doesnât it?â
âuh huh,â you nodâyouâre still panting through the aftershocks of having your orgasm ripped from you, chest rising and falling harsh enough that it fills him with pride he can pull such drastic reactions from you. no one knows your body like suguruâheâs too good at giving it what it wants for anyone else to compare.Â
âthink that boyââ he spits the last word like itâs poison on his tongue, ââcan take care of you?â
âno,â you whimper, âno, he canât. not like you, never like you.â
âthatâs a good girl,â he nods approvingly, rubbing his slick-coated finger over your clit, toying with it teasingly as you writhe, whining for more. âyou know something else about men your age? they donât care to please a womanâdonât bother to appreciate them enough to make them feel good. you think that boy would be hereââ he pauses to motion between your legs, where heâs currently situated, ââwillingly? taste you willingly? let you cum on his tongue willingly?â
âi-i donâtâŚi never asked someone toââ
âdid you ever ask me?â he interrupts, raising a brow at you, âyou ever have to ask me? i just do it. wanna know why? because i know what iâm doingâknow how to treat you right, how to give you what you need. isnât that right?âÂ
âyes, yesâyou always give me what i wantââ
âwhat you need,â he corrects, âand you know what i think you need right now? this.â
his tongue licks a stripe along your entrances before you can say anything else, pulling a gasp out of you as your hands find his hair and tugâsuguru groans at that, feels his pants get impossibly tighter as the aching erection he sports throbs between his legs at the way you pull at the strands so desperately, so needy. for him. only ever him.Â
his tongue fucks into you, messy with the way he devours you, the slick arousal pooling from your cunt coating his lips, his cheeks, his chin. you moanâand really, itâs almost a squealâwhen his fingers are sinking back into you, tongue flicking away at your clit mercilessly as he thrusts his digits in and out of your pussy. youâre close, painfully so, the pressure steadily building and building until you just canât hold it back anymore.Â
âsuguââm c-cumming. god âs so goodâfeels good,â you babble, thighs closing around his head as his fingers curl into your sweet spot over and over again, not stopping for even a second as he helps you ride out your high. your walls spasm around his fingers, tight as they flutter around him and make him groan at the thought of being inside you.Â
he watches, hungry and in awe, as your back arches off the mattress and your mouth parts, broken little wails of his name rolling off your tongue in a sweet melody.Â
âi bet heâs never seen someone look like this,â suguru murmurs, watching the way the ecstasy takes over your features as your face falls slack from pleasure, âso pretty when falling apart. bet heâd never even get close to making you look so fucked from just his tongue.â
your orgasm ripples through youâitâs not new, the way he makes you feel so good, but itâs definitely nothing to get used to either. your body slumps back onto the mattress as you finish, panting harshly while he climbs up to hover over you once again.Â
âthat felt good?â he asks, nosing at your cheek as you nod breathlessly.
âyeah,â you breathe, wrapping your arms around his neck.Â
âhope youâre not tired out just yet,â he says smugly, eyeing the way sweat clings to your forehead and huffs of air exhale from your lungs with each labored breath, âbecause weâre nowhere near done, baby. not even close.â
just like that, your bra is unclasped and pulled off, freeing your tits for his mouth to latch onto a nipple, sucking and lightly grazing his teeth along the bud while his fingers tease at the other, pinching and rubbing over it with his thumb. you whine, eyes squeezing shut as your hand cups the back of his head and keeps him in place.Â
âbet i could make you cum just from this,â he says with a laugh, âi donât even need to fuck you.â
âplease,â you dig your nails into his shoulder, moaning as he switches to wrap his lips around the other nipple, âplease, suguân-need more.â
âbe more specific,â he says lowly, looking up at you in amusement, âgonna need more than that, princess. you gotta help me out hereâiâm afraid i donât know what iâm doing.â
suguru is doing everything he can to drag this outâif youâd known one small comment would have him riled up like thisâŚwell, truthfully, you canât say you wouldnât have made it anyway. itâs exciting in its own right when heâs so determined to show you why you need him, why no one else but him is meant to see you like this, make you fall apart like this, have you sprawled under them like this.Â
no one can know about you and suguruânot nanako and mimiko, not your other friends, not your family. you know what theyâd say, how theyâd feel.Â
disgustâshame, even. heâs far too old for you, you know theyâd say; heâs a red flag for getting with someone so young. no one can know that you come here, dead in the middle of the night when your friends are asleep, and fuck their father. not only thatâlay with their father, talk about your hopes and dreams for the future with their father, giggle as you gossip with their father, fall in love with their father.Â
something tells you the feeling is not unreciprocatedâthat suguru feels the same, that he loves holding you in his arms just as much as you love laying in them. maybe it wasnât a joke, what youâd said. not to him, at leastâmaybe deep down, it stung; maybe he had something to prove. that boy might be closer to you in age, but heâll never, ever treat you the way suguru doesâno one will, for that matter. perhaps he has to show it so you really know.Â
so you look him in the eye, pull him closer until his forehead is pressed against yours and you can press a delicate kiss to his lips before you murmur against them, âfuck me, suguru. pleaseâneed you.â
he groans at that, closes his eyes before his hips move to press the thick tip of his cock against your folds, dragging it along your entrance as he coats his head with your slick. itâs flushed a deep pinkâitâs been neglected for so long that he shudders at the way it aches, at the way even the slightest friction along the sensitive tip pulls a soft gasp from him.Â
for a moment, he wonders if he really will last long enough to fuck you properlyâhe might not, with the way your walls always squeeze around him, always have him ready to fuck his load into you just as soon as heâs inside you. the thought alone almost makes his cock twitchâbut suguru is a man of patience, so he slowly pushes into you, inch by inch, looking down and watching as his girth disappears inside you.Â
âlook at that,â he coos, grinning wide as he looks back up at you, âtook me so easily. âs cause when you do it right, it doesnât take much, does it?â
âf-fuckââ your head presses back against the pillow, mouth hung open as you breathe heavily, trying to squirm and get even the slightest bit of friction from him as he stays painfully still. âmove, suguruâplease, c-canât wait anymore. jusâ wanna feel you.â
âi know,â he chuckles, âpatience is a virtue, sweetheart.â
despite it all, suguru is not feeling very patient anymoreâitâs been long enough. his hips roll slowly at first, a shallow thrust of his hips that makes you both moan lowly before he all but pulls out and slams back in, hard. you can feel the burning stretch of his girth practically splitting you open, every thick vein dragging along your cunt and every brush of his tip against the back of your walls. itâs loudâthe sound of skin slapping against skin, the sound of his deep groans and your breathless whines, the sound of the headboard hitting the wall as he fucks you into his mattress.Â
âgodâfuck, suguruâth-there,â you mewl as he slams into you right where you need him.Â
youâve lost count of how many times suguru has fucked you like youâre his. in his bed at night, in his shower in the mornings, on the couch when you drop by when the girls arenât home, in his car that one time he drove you home when it rained, in your apartment that one time he dropped off your laptop because you forgot it. thereâs one common denominatorâthe way he makes you feel, not just from the way his cock ruts into you, but from the way his fingers tangle with yours, from the way his mouth finds your jaw to kiss, from the way his forehead presses into your shoulder with warmth.Â
itâs exciting, maybe. at first, itâs scandalous and a little thrilling in its own right. by now, itâs something much more than thatâyou donât think anyone could make you feel the way he does, fuck you like he does, even if they tried. even if they knew where to touch and where to kiss. even if they knew what you liked and what you didnât.Â
they couldnât be suguruâwould never be suguru.Â
âthere, huh?â he pants, moaning softly as he feels your walls flutter around him tightly, âi know. i know how to fuck this pussyâmy pussy. you think some boy you hardly know would know? think heâd care to learn? think heâd even try?â
âno,â you gasp, shaking your head as your hips buck up to meet his sharp thrusts, âno. no one would make me feel this good. make me feel so good, sugu.â
ânghâsh-shit,â he hisses at your words, cock almost swelling harder at the way you praise him, at the way your words are almost slurred with no real thought behind him. itâs a little pride-inducing, the way youâre still able to sing his praises without having to really think about it first. he can hear it, the way youâre lost in the drag of his cock, drunk in the haze of pleasure, unfocused on everything else besides the way he bullies his thick girth into your abused cunt.
itâs a mess, itâs filthy the way thereâs a mix of pre cum and your slick at the base of his cock, along your inner thighs, coating your skin as the squelching sound of him nudging past your folds fills the room.
itâs good, the way he makes you feelâhe can hear it in your voice as you wail his name.
âs-suguruâoh.â
âwhat, you gettinâ all fucked out on me? âm not even close yet, princess,â he hums, leaning down to kiss your neck as he sucks softly into your sweet spot. you throw your head back, rasping out a cry of his name again as his balls slap against your ass with a harsh roll of his hips.Â
and then his hand makes its way between your bodies, thumb attaching itself to your clit before rubbing punishing circles into the bundle of nervesâyou sob at that, back arching up as your chest presses against his, nipples hard as they brush along his skin.
âs-suguâclose, âm gonna cum a-againâso close,â you pant brokenly, every sentence cut off with a sharp gasp as he thrusts into you.Â
youâre closeâyou canât fight back the way the coil in your belly snaps as he teases your clit. itâs still sensitive from the last orgasm, every nerve still burning up from before as he gives you more, gives you too much, almost. you cum harder this timeâyour second high creeping up on you when you least expect it.Â
it makes your eyes roll back, makes your thighs quiver, and tears stream down your cheeks as you chant his name over and over. suguru, âs so good. suguru, âm cumming. suguru, âs all for you.
every sentence makes his cock drill into you faster, sloppier in rhythm, maybe, but faster. needier. bordering on desperate.Â
âf-fuck, baby,â he grunts, âsqueezinâ me so tightâsuch a tight fuckinâ cunt. you think just anyone deserves this? think you can just walk around and let anyone fuck this? âs bullshitângh.â
you donât answerâcanât answer, in fact. itâs all teary eyes and soft sniffles as you mewl with every thrust, voice breaking between every pretty little sound you make. heâs still fucking into you, still dragging his cock against those sensitive walls, still bumping against your clit with his navel, still nudging against your sweet spot with his thick, swollen tip. itâs almost too muchâit is too much, making you writhe under his body as you try to form the words.Â
ââs t-too much, suguâc-canât anymore,â you try, âcanât.â
âwhat?â he gasps, furrowing his brows in mock confusion, âyouâre tappinâ out on me already? but âm not even done yet, sweetheart. havenât even finished yetâdonât tell me youâre already spent. how will you keep up with your little boyfriendâs stamina if you canât even take an old man like me?â
âc-canât take anyone but you,â you sob, âjusâ youâonly you. promise.â
âyeah? you swear?â
âuh huh. jusâ you, suguâdonâ want anyone else. wonât fuck me the same.â
âatta girl,â he coos, chuckling as he leans down to kiss your jaw, trailing soft pecks until he meets your lips, âthatâs what i thought. make sure you donât forget, okay?â
âfuck, suguruââmâŚg-gonnaâŚâ
âgonna what? cum? youâre cumming again?â you nod at thatâhe grins wide, pride settling into the crinkles of his eyes before his thumb rubs harsh circles into your swollen clit once more. he looks pretty like thatâhair framing his face, the mix of black and white strands sticking to the damp skin of his forehead. his skin is flushed, abs flexing as he pants over you. sometimes you feel guilty that half of why you come over to visit nanako and mimiko is to fuck suguruâthe guilt is quickly extinguished when you see him like this, bottom lip caught between his teeth as his arms barely hold him over you, eyes shut tight as he groans.Â
âi-iâmâfuck, fuck, fuck,â you canât form sentences anymore as you cumâagain. not that you really could before that, but now all you can offer is croaked half-syllables and shaky sobs. your walls squeeze around him, tight as they hug around his throbbing cock.Â
it takes one, two, three more sloppy rolls of his hips before he lets out at a low, âbaby, fuckââm gonna fill you up. want that? want me to cum in you? make you mine? always been mine, havenât you?â
âyes, yesâyours, sugu. yours, yours, yours,â you babble, words slurred between breathy moans and broken sobs. âwanna be yours.â
you can feel himâfeel the way his cock twitches in you, the way he grinds into you to ride out his high, the way sticky, hot ropes of cum fill your walls, the way he fucks his load deeper into you with every sloppy thrust of his hips. his arms quiver as he holds himself over youâjust barely, though. you can hear the way his voice cracks as he gasps your name over and over, as he mutters lowly about how youâre his, how youâll always only be his.Â
âmine,â he grits, âyouâre fuckinâ mineâsee how youâre suckinâ me in? see how i fit in this pussy like it was made for me? âs cause youâre mine.â
his body slumps onto yours as he finishes, head pressed into the crook of your neck as he kisses the skin while you both catch your breaths. you whimper, still sensitive, as he pulls out of you, a soft chuckle falling past his lips as he pulls his head up to look at you and press a kiss to your cheek.Â
âso,â he starts, eyes laced with amusement as he takes in the fucked out look on your face, the tears still drying your cheeks, the swollen flush of your bottom lip, âstill think you need someone with more stamina? someone whoâll fuck you betterââ
âgod,â you groan, slapping his shoulder, âwill you drop it already? you got what you wanted, didnât you?â
âno,â he murmurs, pecking your lips, âstill wanna hear it some more.â
âyour ego needs a reality check,â you huff as you brush a strand of hair from his forehead, âthink iâve fed it plenty all night.â
âactually, i think you crushed it,â he pouts theatrically, âtalking about some asshole who doesnât care about you right in front of me. after i take such good care of you, too. the girls already think you should date him,â he adds the last part with a slightly bitter roll of his eyes, pulling a giggle out of you.
âthey think i donât know how to talk to men,â you snort, âimagine they knew i was talking to men old enough to be my father.â
âhey,â he clicks his teeth, falling onto the mattress beside youâhe pulls you into his chest, letting your cheek rest on his bare skin. itâs so wrongâlying in bed with the father of your best friends. but somehow, suguru feels like the only thing youâve ever done right. âage is nothing but a number, sweetheart.â
if i have to see the word cock one more time im going to eradicate all humans that have them

PART ONE | TWO
You never settled your relationship with the summer season. To put it simply, it was a love and hate sort of thing; you liked that it was dry, and the air always felt like it was filtered and healthy even though you were well-aware of the current shit-state of the Earth's ozone layer. There were beams and sunlights and street vendors and people lying on the park's ground. Summer felt nostalgic, like the first time you bought a vinyl in highschool and listened to Fleetwood Mac in secret because your mom was certain they peddled cocaine and all sorts of illegal drugs, and with a highschool friend you no longer talk to, not because of a friendship-breaking betrayal but something more melancholic than that like drifting apart as you got older â the ambience, generally, was what you loved the most about it.
But regardless of those, summer got hot. Sure, you could forgo layers of clothing and it was always nice to lounge about in short bottoms and strapless tops and sandals, but at the end of the day, you needed to set your AC on the lowest temp, and it cranks up your monthly rent a greater percentage which causes a detrimental result to your monthly pay. (And you always had to reapply make-up every now and then whenever you went outside because if not, you'd be a sweating mess.)
In the grand scheme of things, though, there was nothing more than you disliked than Park Jimin, your best friend since college, asking you to be his plus-one on his mom's birthday dinner. For the second time.
âI told you, Jimin, Iâm not doing that anymore. Your mom called me fat and recommended a bunch of expensive skin care products to treat one single zit on the side of my forehead the last time you brought me there. I hid that with my bangs and she still saw it, like what the hell? The baked lasagna might have tasted good but Iâm not stepping one foot in your house ever again.â You spat out, rolling your eyes at your friend who just dramatically flopped himself on your bed.
âOkay, so Iâm really sorry about my mom. Sheâs aâŚâ He trailed off, looking at you with meaningful eyes that weighed words you knew he couldn't exactly say without feeling bad, and you sighed. Nodded in understanding. Jiminâs face contorted into a cringed expression at that. â... yeah. But! Please. I swear! This is the last time. I just really need you to be there. Theyâre setting me up with Heesu, okay? You know that snotty nepo baby of the Kang clan who owns Kang Tech?â
âJimin, youâre a nepo baby.â
He hit you with a pillow. âI am but I can earn a hundred thousand won without my familyâs money. They can cut my credit cards and I'll still be thriving.â
You broke the serious demeanor and laughed loudly at his seemingly confident claim.
âIâm sorry but you could not even get a job at a burger joint without some nepotism let alone have a hundred thousand without your dadâs credit cards. Bitch, youâre just lying.â
âFuck you. I was employee of the week at Seventh Street Burger.â He backfired, referring to that point in time in your sophomore year where you picked up a part time job during the summer at a burger joint and Jimin just decided to come along randomly. He got it because the owner knew of his dad.
âYeah, because Sowon had a crush on you?â You said, remembering the ownerâs daughter, who was also helping out at the store at that time. She was so smitten by Jimin you almost felt bad for her.
âOkay, fair, point taken. No need to be such a bitch about it,â Your best friend said with a dismissive wave of his hand, telling he was over it. You only laughed at that, boisterously, might you add, just to piss him off for no reason. Jimin deadpanned. âBut seriously. I think theyâre planning to marry me off to Heesu.â
Your face fell out of genuine concern this time.
âOh my god, really?â
Jimin once again cringed visibly. âYeah. I mean from a business lense it makes sense. But me marrying at 33? That makes me â like â a child groom.â
âOh⌠yeahâŚâ you trailed off, sympathizing with him. Not that you've ever been in the situation where your parents forced you in a sham marriage for their own wealth because there was no wealth to begin with. But you felt bad for Jimin. You always have, when it came to this particular subject.
You knew how it was with rich people, having known Jimin for almost half your life. It was true that arranged marriages were still a thing, and while Jimin seemed that he could pretty much do everything he wanted because of his free-spirited nature, his parents could still most likely make him marry someone he barely knew. Solely for business.
âUgh.â Jimin groaned. âShould I just come out at the dinner so they can stop linking me to women? Iâm gay as fuck, man. My cousin Park Youngdam would have a field day given that homophobic fucktard has been calling me the f word ever since he learned it in seventh grade.â
You shook your head, visibly cringing at his words. You didn't have family yourself. It was your mom who raised you alone for all your life, until she died five years ago. Didn't know any extended family. But frankly, you thought it was better that way than to deal with a complicated family like Jimin's.
âNah. I mean if youâre ready, well, do it. But like, your parents areâŚâ You two shared a look together again, and Jimin just slapped his palms over his face, indicating his doom. Your face twisted with another shot of deeper sympathy for him.
âThis is it for me. Theyâll marry me off to Kang Heesu and weâll fly to the US and live in Massachusetts to fulfill her white picket fence fantasy. Iâll be a miserable husband and she'll be an even more miserable wife because sheâll eventually find out Iâm gay. The neighbors will start talking and the white republicans will shun me out of the town church. Weâll have a surrogate baby andââ
âJimin, what the fuck!â You hit him hard on his arm as you couldn't keep a straight face anymore at his dramatic monologue. âYouâre not gonna marry Heesu and you won't live in fuckass Massachusetts and no oneâs gonna shun you out of the town church and you won't have a surrogate baby.â
âItâs a possibility.â Jimin shrugged.
âI feel like you're guilt-tripping me into agreeing to be your date again at your mom's birthday dinner and I think that's very evil of you.â You said, squinting your eyes at him.
âWell, duh? But also, Iâm really kind of lowkey highkey scared theyâll marry me off to someone now that Iâm pushing forty.â
"You're quite literally seven years away from forty." You countered.
He looked at you with an expression of I know right! And he told you so.
"That's what I said to mom and dad, but they're acting like my sperm will freeze next year. God, I can't stand them!"Â
Jimin, for all his jokes and unserious and bitchy behavior, was someone extremely important to you. Yeah, sure, he was rich as hell and he annoys you when he says something that reeks of too much nepotism but he was never intentionally snotty, never thinks he was better than everyone else (Jokes about how he thinks he has the fattest and juiciest ass in the world, though), and he wasn't at all like the rich people you've had the misfortune of interacting with at his mom's birthday party last year. He might be a self-proclaimed bitch but if you put him together with those people, he might as well be one of God's disciples.
For all his crass language and rather strong personality, Jimin was a doting friend who was there for you every single time. You could call him up at 3 am and heâd be at your door bringing Chinese take out and two tubs of ice cream, ready to hear you vent about your stupid job or a guy that you fumbled by being weird and off-putting because you didn't know how to handle a relationship. He was the kind of friend who would defend you in front of anyone else but will mercilessly tell you off and list down all points of your stupidity once you were in closed doors. He was the kind of friend that would ask you to be his pretend partner at a birthday dinner party, but he was your best friend ultimately and even if you had a big problem with his family and their extremely traditional (read: toxic) ways, you didn't want him to be pressured into coming out just so he could avoid to be engaged off to another random heiress. Didn't want him to do something he wasn't ready for. Didn't want him hurt or anything of the sort.
The last dinner wasn't even that bad, if you were to be honest. His parents were shitty, yeah sure, and the other guys in there that consisted of politicians and businessmen and people in the showbiz industry were something taken out of the toilet bowl for how stinky their elitist, better-than-you personalities were, but you both just totally forgot all about it by getting wasted at the local bar right after leaving. Not that his momâs words didn't sting a bit or didn't make you a little conscious, but at the end of the day, you weren't actually dating Jimin so you didn't care what his parents thought of you.
Additionally, you didn't have something planned for the next two weeks when the birthday would be happening. You were supposed to, but that ship has long sailed when you fumbled a date with the guy at the IT department. For the record, you didn't really like him that much and he talked too much about his job and while you didn't mind that, it was getting a little too tiring. If you wanted IT lessons you wouldâve majored in it in college. Still, Shin Taemu was handsome. And he wore those rounded glasses. Was tall. Had nice arms. Too bad he wanted to be the next Mark Zuckerberg. Fuck that guy.
âUgh, I don't know,â you groaned. âIt's just so disgusting to be your girlfriend, okay?â
Jimin audibly gasped. âHow dare you? A lot would jump on this ass.â He said with incredulity seeping through his voice, pointing to his bum.
You rolled your eyes. âNot me, obviously. Before you take offenseââ
âOffense taken.â
ââitâs just that you're like my cousin and when you call me honey I want to crawl out of my own skin.â
Jimin laughed at that while you looked miserable, remembering those moments from last year. Seriously, how could you have fooled anyone in that party that you were banging? You swore you looked like Ariana Grande and Troye Sivan in that one music video? (Jimin was the one who showed that meme to you, by the way.)
âSo I won't call you honey. Just babe.â
âEw.â You quickly retaliated.
âOhh, the homophobia is sho-wing.â Jimin sing-sang, ever the mature individual he was.
âFuck off, seriously.â
Jimin just giggled and then scooted closer to you. âNo but like, are you coming? âCause jokes aside, I'm just gonna find someone else if you really don't wanna do it. But you know you're always my first choice.â
âFirst choice when you do some stupid shit.â you countered, rolling your eyes for the nth time that night. Jimin would be the cause of your eye surgery if ever they got dislocated or something.
âThatâs my biggest act of love.â
âI don't want it.â
âIâll double what I paid you last year.â
âDouble it again and give it to the next person?â
Jimin flipped you off. âIâll give you my nintendo and Iâll get you a card at that coffee shop you love so much.â
That caught your attention. You raised your brow. âOn god?â
âWhen did I ever lie to you?â
You deadpanned. âWe won't finish this conversation if I list all the timesââ
âOkay, okay, point taken. But I'm really serious. Please, please, please, please be my pretend girlfriend on my mom's birthday party please, pleaseââ
âShut up. Ugh,â you could already feel the big smile creeping up Jiminâs face when you let out a big sigh. âOkay, Iâll do it. Buy me boba now.â
Jimin tackled you to the bed and hugged you and kissed your forehead.
âThank you! Best best friend ever.â he delightfully said, grinning widely, eyes almost disappearing in his triumph.
Your face contorted into a disgusted expression while Jimin just laughed as you pushed him so hard he almost fell off the bed.
âYou are a disgusting limpy sack of dicks! Also, Iâm not your best best friend, you don't have a wide selection. I'm your best friend. Period.â
âUnfortunately.â He waved you off and when you were about to retort something his phone suddenly rang. You watched quietly as he put it over his ear. âHey, you just landed?â
If it was a private conversation Jimin would've left the room but since he didn't, you decided to stay in bed, kind of listening in to the conversation, but also not, as you turned the volume down of the show you were watching earlier on your laptop.
âNah, you want me to pick you up?â Jimin sat up on the edge of the bed and you looked at him curiously. âSure, Iâm free, Kook. You have a place to stay? Hotel suite or something?â He nodded to whatever the other person was saying on the other line. âOh, you're here for three months? Thought you were just flying in for mom's birthday?â
It was moments after they said goodbye that Jimin turned to you to ask, âWell, my cousinâs apparently staying here for three months. Got this job thing going on.â
âIs that one of the non-problematic twenty percent cousin lineage of your very complicated family tree?" You asked, referring to him telling you one time that his family, including the extended ones, was eighty percent shitty and twenty percent decent.
Jimin chuckled at the inside joke. "Well, yeah, he's one of the good ones. Knows I'm gay."
"Oh, nice."
Jimin stood up from your bed. âIâll get you your boba and head off. Gotta pick cousin up or heâll start throwing tantrums at the airport.â
âAdd extra pearls please.â You told him, watching as he clicked away on his phone to get you your drink.
âI spoil you too much.â Jimin said, clicking his tongue, eyes still on his phone.
âWhat are you here for if not my glorified sugar daddy?â
âI will kill myself in front of you.â Jimin deadpanned, getting a chuckle out of you.
You didn't know the psychology â or if there even was psychology â behind feeling embarrassed when you were about to cross a path while carrying huge boxes. It was a normal task, and yet, it always felt like a huge walk of shame when you did it.
It was probably because you had to carry it over a flight of stairs, and there was no way you wouldn't trip on yourself carrying two heavy boxes in your hands that were already disrupting your vision.
Maybe it was your fault for choosing the pick-up option when you were checking out these furniture online, all because there was a huge increase on the fee for door-to-door delivery. For the record, there was a huge gap and the boxes were not really that heavy to the point you could not carry them both. It's just a lamp and a portable desk, you thought a week ago when you opted for the pick-up option, I could carry it all the way to the unit just fine â and obviously, your delusion has resulted to this very moment.
As soon as you managed to walk over five steps, you felt as if your oxygen supply just got cut back, panting like someone fresh from a marathon. Damn. You definitely needed to work out a little. Maybe do some squats for your New Yearâs resolution, commit to it for three days straight then forget about it for the next 362 days of the year.
You looked ahead of you and a string of curses let themselves out of your mouth automatically as you estimated the number of stairs you needed to get through to get to your apartment.
This day sucked! It was Sunday and you planned to wake up at five am to have a productive day but then you slept through your five alarms and woke up at eleven am instead. You ran out of eggs and you had to go to the convenience store to eat a sad meal of yogurt and kimbap. And now there were these boxes that you needed to carry over what seemed to look like six million of stairs. You weren't Sisyphus! And where were your goddamn neighbors when you needed them?
"You need help, ma'am?"
"Jesus Christâ" you turned to look to your right only to see a man who seemed to own the previous voice.
And Jesus Christ, indeed.
He was wearing a white shirt and some shorts, Nike sliders on his feet and a pair of headphones on. He was wearing glasses. And he had a tattoo sleeve.
What the fuck.
What the fuck!
It has been so long since you thought a man was crazily attractive. Okay, well sure, the guys from the IT department were something else (or you just had a weird eyeglasses fetish, Jimin once pointed out, that you still â to this day â vehemently try to deny) but youâve never been this taken aback by someoneâs face before.
The guyâs lips tilted a bit, some sort of greeting maybe, and you quickly looked away, embarrassed, fearing that he caught you looking at him longer than necessary.
Oh god. This was pathetic! He was a stranger! He was a man! He just had a cute face attached to a very good body with an arm full of tattoos and he was tall but you were sure he wasnât six feet two. Also, he had hair that looked fluffy from where you stood and a pair of eyeglasses but Jimin was just bluffing when he said you had a fetish for them. Right?
You were performing mental gymnastics until you realized he was asking a question.
"Oh! Uh, no, thank you. It's fine." You said, embarrassed at the way you almost jumped in surprise earlier.
But the whole thing was ridiculous. What, because there was a very fine man across from you the universe suddenly decided to fuck up your fate by making you be seen by that very man struggling with boxes all the way up to your unit? Couldn't it just have been on a day when you did your make-up and dressed up in that overpriced dress you bought hundred bad choices ago?
You fumbled with the boxes a little bit before continuing your way up, nevermind the guy whose response you didn't wait for because you needed to get the fuck away from him before you say something weird and off-putting.
Truthfully, you could use the help. But at what cost? A fine man carrying them? Okay, that wasnât so bad. But what were you supposed to do with... all of that?
As if the universe was indeed trying to prove to you that you were, in fact, not its favorite creation, you almost tripped. And the guy most definitely saw it.
Fuck.
You turned to the side to see him looking at you, concern etching his face. You wanted to convince yourself that it was genuine concern because you'd commit something that would totally change the trajectory of his life if he was to laugh.
But you thought his own unit must be way up as well, as he was going to the same path as you, and if that was the case, he must have been a new neighbor in the complex because you've never seen the man before.
âWell, itâs not that heavy butâŚâ you trailed off, looking blankly at the cardboard boxes. And then at him. "I could use some help, if you don't mind."
The guy just chuckled. Oh wow, his laugh was very... low.
You didnât even know what the fuck that meant.
âIâll get them for you.â He said, crossing the small distance between you and taking over the pile, leaving you with nothing in your hands.
âOh, no, Iâll have that one. Itâs fine.â You said, stepping closer to take the other one but he was already securing it in his hold, with stability this time, ready to take off.
He let out a small laugh again and you bit your tongue to not think about how cute he looked. If he was a new tenant, you hoped you didn't cross paths with him ever again.
"It's okay, ma'am."
He's got to stop calling you that before you do something drastic.
âItâs quite far from here, I'm all the way up to three-three-six.â You uttered, pointing forward, a few steps behind the guy, who hummed at what you said.
You quickly caught up to him. "Really, thanks for doing this."
"No problem, it's nothing." He said, smiling at you. Warm and kind. All cute. "I'm all the way up to four-four-six as well."
Your eyes widened. "No way, that's just across mine."
The stranger, apparently your neighbor now, grinned.
"Nice coincidence, huh?"
A sheepish smile formed on your lips. You didn't dwell on that comment too much. Knew it was just small talk.
"If you don't mind me asking, are you a new tenant here?â You asked out of genuine curiosity. You had never seen someone come out of the unit across from you out of all the four years you'd been here.
He nodded, agreeing with what you presumed.
"Yeah. Just temporary, though.â
âOhâŚâ A surprised sound. Maybe it was a good thing he was only staying temporarily... âI hope I didnât inconvenience you or anything. You really donât need to bring the boxes over to my apartment.â
The man just chuckled, dismissing your worry. âYou looked like you could use a hand, these boxes are big. Anyway, I was just out checking 'round town. Settling in.â
From the sound of it, you'd assume he was not only moving in in a new apartment complex, but new city as well. Perhaps country? But he most definitely looked Korean. But maybe he came from abroad. Who knows.
âYeah, there's a really nice coffee shop three blocks away. You should check it out sometime. Jiâmy friend and I are obsessed with their iced caramel macchiato. And the boba.â
His brows furrowed in pure interest. âThat must've been the one I passed by this morning. Iâll make sure to try that one.â
âYou really should. And the barista gives you a brownie on Sundays if he likes you.â You shared like it was gossip, mentally taking note to visit the cafe sometime this week.
âAnd I'm sure not everybody gets the privilege?â The guy looked at you funny, and that made you laugh.
"Of course, yes! You have to earn it, I think. I feel like I spent over a million there before he started giving me brownies."
"Hope my charm works on him as well," he said, and it caught you off guard.
What did he mean, "as well"? Like he was speaking from the basis that you had charm and so he hoped he had it as well to get the barista to like him?
"Well. He's strict." Was all you could say, before you spotted your apartment. "Hey, I'll take it over from here."
The guy looked over the plated number on the door, reading three-three-six just as you said earlier. Trudging forward, he set the boxes down on the side of the porch.
"Thank you, really. This was really nice of you."
You extended your gratitude once again as if you didn't spend the walk up to here thanking him non-stop, sounding like a broken record. Thank god the guy didn't seem to mind your over-the-top gratitude, only waving his hand.
"Told you, it's fine. You need help with a few boxes again and just ring me up across," He joked, turning around slightly and looking at the door across your unit, Unit 446. It earned a chuckle from you. His face turned serious now, but there was still a charming smile on his face. âHey. Iâm actually pretty new in this town. I was thinking about visiting a few restaurants downtown, maybe you could recommend me some?â
You didn't mean to, but you took note the way his doe eyes seemed to shimmer even behind the frame of his glasses.
âMy favorites are just, like, a ten-minute walk away. Thereâs this restobar near that drugstore when you turn left from this building, right?â The guy nodded, and you were slightly delighted he knew right away. âYeah, their ramen's great, you'd thank me forever.â
He chuckled at the way you said it and you smiled.
Your interactions with new people were always a range from pure silence to oversharing; talking to them like they were your long lost friend whom youâve milked goats with in your fatherâs orchard. It was probably just a product of introversion; not knowing the right approach to socializing.
âThanks for the recommendation.â He said, a genuine appreciative tone lacing his words.
âYouâre welcome. If I can ring you up to help me with some boxes, you can ring me up for some restaurant recommendation.â
"It's an exchange, then. Deal."
"Why not?" You shrugged, laughing along with him when he did so.
You both stood there for a while until seconds passed. You didnât know exactly how to end the conversation, not that you wanted to, but there was nothing that went to your head to talk about more. And besides, he was probably headed somewhere, so you began to speak.
âHey, so Iâm going inââ
âWhat about weââ
âOh.â You stopped. âSorry, what was that?â
The guy just shook his head. âNah, youâre probably busy. Thanks for the recommendation again.â
âNo, seriously, sorry I didn't hear it the first time...â
âI was just gonna ask about the name of the restaurant.â
âItâs Midday Miso.â You told him, smiling.
âMidday Miso,â The guy nodded, âYeah. Got it. Thanks again.â
âYouâre welcome, and, uh, thanks. For the help.â
You took your keys out from your shorts and you didnât expect to still see him standing in front of you when you turned around. You jokingly squinted your eyes at him.
âYeah, you first, get in.â He said with a low chuckle.
It was a little embarrassing and pretty stupid how your heart fluttered a bit at that.
âWhat a gentleman you are,â You respond with a snort, opening the door to your unit and pushing the boxes inside your apartment. When they were in, you turned to look at the guy again, saying, âOkay, bye for real. See you around. Hope you like Midday Miso if you try it. And the coffee shop. It's called Brown Coffee.â
âSee you around.â He did a little wave that made you both laugh before you closed the door.
When the lock system clicked, you stood on your doorway for a little while.
And then fake-cried.
You quickly clicked on Jimin's pinned contact on your phone.
You [5:35pm]:Â JIMINNNNNNNNN You [5:35pm]:Â POP EMERGENCY You [5:35pm]:Â POP EMERGENCY BITCH IF U DONT RESPOND You [5:36pm]:Â I HAVE A DIABOLICAL CRUSH AND ITS GOING IN THE MEMOIRRRRRR

There must be a time where you finally grow up and learn to cook.
You were a twenty-eight-year-old woman and yet, your meals sadly ranged from instant noodles, canned goods, and food from the nearby twenty-four-hour provision shop. Sometimes, you had the gall to cook something from scratchâbut with scratch you meant scratching off the labels from food take-outs and reheating them in your microwave.
Jimin had told you one time you would die at twenty-nine with your lifestyle. You told him he couldn't tell you shit because he didn't know how to cook either, he just worked out and ate healthy stuff, and you did, too! But Jimin knew you, and in an evil manner, clocked you with, "Buying fresh produce and not consuming them does not count as healthy living."
Anyway, you never understood why you were so bad at cooking. Your mother, as you remembered her, was decent at it but you guessed it was because she never really taught you and you never really bothered, either. In some immature way of thinking, you'd like to think it was a win for feminism as you were battling patriarchal standards by not conforming to stereotypical "female" qualities. But deep inside, you knew cooking should be a survival skill.
Well, maybe Jimin was right and you would indeed die at the ripe age of twenty-nine. On the bright side, at least you wouldn't have to pay off your student loans and your monthly rent.
In relation, not knowing how to cook meant impractical visits to the restaurant, and that was how you ended up at Midday Miso for dinner after your shift.
It was only a little over seven pm when you entered the restaurant, the ahjumma quickly greeting you and preparing your usual, a sign of familiarity that implied your countless visits ever since moving in at your current apartment building.
Regular visits meant usual sitting spot, and in your case, it was the high stools that faced the glass walls of the restaurant's facade where you could see the busy street making that little area of the town alive.
As minutes overlapped with one another, your food was served and you were hit with the waft of the restaurant's delightful signature beef ramen and bibimbap that the ahjumma made sure to add extra beef on.
Eating with a happy heart made you feel like nothing in the world mattered but you and the food before you, so, you didn't pay attention to the person who was coming to your direction and eventually sat beside you, but what caught you off guard was when said person suddenly said,
"Hi."
When you turned to the side to see who it was, your eyes widened as you said in both recognition and surprise, "Unit 446?"
"That's me." He, Unit 446âin the fleshâsaid with a low chuckle, twisting himself so that he was sat appropriately on the high stool. Still, his body leaned towards you when he continued to say, "Fancy seeing you here."
You grinned, flattered at the casualness of his approach.
"Same to you. I wonder who told you about this local gem."
He pursed his lips. "A nice neighbor across my place... whom I still don't know the name of."
"Oh, shoot!" You'd face-palm right now if he wasn't looking, but truthfully, you didn't even think about that! You've just been referring to him as the Staircase Guy slash Neighbor 446 in your head and when you told Jimin about him. You laughed at the thought. "That neighbor of yours is __."
Neighbor 446 nodded and extended his hand to you
"I'm Jungkook."
It was a little silly but you shook hands, anyway, and knowing it was, indeed, silly, you both laughed together at your joint connection.
Jungkook. Huh. Not exactly a common Korean name, but it wasn't rare either. The name does ring a bell though, felt like you've heard it somewhere before.
You brushed off the familiarity as inconsequential.
Unlike the completely casual attire he adorned the first time that you met him, he was now in some sleek slacks and a white polo which sleeves were ridden up half high, which exposed the vines of ink on his right arm once again. There's a coat that hung around the back of his chair, and he had forgone the glasses this time around, which was a bit of a shame on the part of your brain that might have a silly crush on him.
Jungkook's clothes seemed to mirror your own business casual ensemble, and that made you think about what he possibly did for a living. Maybe he worked a corporate job just like you, and the prospect might have made you down a littleâonly because as far as you were concerned, corporate people weren't the most pleasant people you could encounterâbut it was not something you dwelled on too much because you couldn't care less. If Jungkook was corporate, he sure didn't seem to be one the way he was.
Besides, you wouldn't be the one to bring up the depressing and aggravating conversation about gross grown-up things like... jobs... Eurgh. You both could just talk about the weather or how insane the ahjumma's ramen tasted for eternity.
"Well, hello, Jungkook." You greeted him. All warm and soft, testing the syllables of his name on your tongue. Rolled off well enough. He had a nice name that sure fit his face for some reason.
"Hi, __." He mirrored the soft smile on your lips, and just as he said it, the ahjumma was heading towards your direction to give him his order.
In that usual way grandmas reacted, the ahjumma gasped audiblyâand dramatically, might you addâupon seeing Jungkook, but what she said next made you want to dig a hole under your seat.
"__-dear! Is this young man your boyfriend?"
Good thing you weren't consuming anything as of that moment, because it would've entered the wrong track.
"Ahjumma!" You laughed, totally not authentic at all because your face didn't match it, looking at Jungkook who just sent a shy smile her way.
Ahjumma must have seen you both talking to each other and had completely jumped to a conclusion. An insane one at that!Â
Shaking your head, you clarified, "This is Jungkook. A friend. He's new in town and checking out all the stuff around here. I recommended him this place."
You saw Jungkook nodding along with your words while he helped her set his table.
The ahjumma just shook her head. "I apologize, then," She looked at Jungkook and as if gossiping with him, whispered in a not very subtle way, "I keep on telling this girl to date already! Such young beauty shouldn't be wasted, you know."
A tsk-ing sound made its way through her mouth, and as much as you were starting to feel embarrassed that she was telling on you on Jungkookâwho was literally a stranger to you a day ago and whom you may have a teeny tiny bit of crush onâyou knew ahjumma did not have any malicious intent and just chose to laugh the whole thing off.
You heard Jungkook do the same.
This was ridiculous.
"Ahjumma, I told you, you're gonna be the first one to know when I date. For now I'm just a part-time accountant and a full-time promoter of Midday Miso." You pout at her, trying to dodge the topic of romance altogether.
Not in front of Jungkook.
"Ayee," She gave you a side-eye. "Fine. I'll bring over some extra beef."
You mouthed an enthusiastic "yes!" and raised your fist in the air with excitement, and Jungkook looked at the interaction with a smile on his face.
As the ahjumma walked away, you looked over at him.
"I'm glad you came byâ" You identified his order to be the same one you used to be obsessed with the first few months you came to the restaurant. "âand ordered their best seller. You sure know how to be a tourist."
"Looked good on the menu. The ahjumma also seems to be nice. Seems like she's a close friend, huh?" Jungkook said.
"Totally."
And it was the truth. There was just something about ahjumma that made you feel reminiscent about the grandmother you've never had. Ever since you moved in and became a regular at this place, it felt like she's taken care of you and your relationship had been special since.
"This is really good." Jungkook commented after having his second bite, and you nodded in agreement. "She was serious about the beef thing?"
You chuckled at the mention. "Yeah, she always gives me extra."
"You just always get free stuff around these areas?" Jungkook joked which earned a hearty laugh from you. You remembered telling him about the free brownie on Sundays at Brown Coffee, a little bit surprised he recalled that.
"Now that you said that, I actually do." You proudly shared. You've been in this town for so long that the various faces just went from familiar to friends.
Jungkook nodded, his face showing amusement.
"I have to learn your ways, then."
"The secret to that is be incompetent at cooking. It means it's either take-out or eat out. Business owners around here have no choice but to see me every three days because I can't cook my own meal."
You could see Jungkook's amusement growing every second, and to add faux insult to injury, he joked, "Oh, bummer."
You decided to ride along with that.
"You mean you're a good cook? That's the real bummer! And here I thought we were bonding." You said, purposefully trying to sound scandalous at his implication of being a good cook.
He shook his head instantly, chuckling. "Okay, nah. I'm not that good. Just decent. But I'll have you know I can make a mean tangsuyuk. Any other complicated stuff is out the window, so there, we are bonding."
"I appreciate that you're under the assumption that I know where to begin with the non-complicated stuff. You're already putting way too much faith in me."
"I seriously doubt that." Jungkook laughed once again.
"You know what my friend tells me? That I'd die at twenty-nine because I don't know how to cook."
Jungkook almost keeled over hearing you say the words, and as much as you were amused at his own amusement, you decided to further add on the joke because you were enjoying this way too much.
"Wow. I wouldn't doubt you'd be an accessory to my murder the way you're laughing way too hard at my impending death. That's next year, you know."
Jungkook reached over for the glass of water and drank it. While he did so, the ahjumma had come over to give you the beef she promised. You did not forgot to thank her as soon as she went away.Â
You did hope Jungkook didn't notice the malicious wink she sent your way.
"Fuck, sorry." Jungkook's laughter had gone down this time, but his eyes still showed a hint of mirth when he asked, "You're twenty-eight, then?"
You nodded. "Yep." Unfortunately, you thought.
"Oh, that's actually surprising."
A gasp left your mouth. Jungkook was quick to correct himself.
"I meant it's surprising because I thought you were way younger."
Oh.
"Don't flatter me. I won't share my extra beef with you."
"I thoughtâ" He shrugged. "âEarly twenties."
"I'm guessing you are in your early twenties." You joked back.
"Okay, now, don't flatter me. I know how old I look." Jungkook said with a dismissive tone, but nevertheless light-hearted. Just like how this whole thing was going.
God, you were so in awe of how good he was at talking to you that he was practically bringing out the extrovert in you you only ever show to exclusive people like Jimin.
"So, you're like, fifty, then?"
Incredulous, Jungkook burst into laughter. "Wow."
"Sorry, just that you sounded like you were five years from retirement! Anyway, you look like we're the same age?"
He shook his head. "Three years older. Turning thirty-one later this year."
Jaw dropped. Not physically, but mentally.
"Oh wow, you're basicallyâ"Â a fucking DILF! What the hell!
Thankfully you managed to cut yourself off before Jungkook could think you were way off your rocks and embarrass yourself in front of him for eternity. You could just hear Jimin from miles away telling you off about calling thirty-year-old men DILFs even though you didn't know if they had a child.
What do you mean this guy was thirty and why did that just make him even hotter in your head... He's got to stop this madness before you do something completely incomprehensible.
"âA senior." Was the lame thing you came up with to finish your sentence.
"Ouch." Jungkook said, but his word was completely opposite to the expression he was wearing on his face the way he just couldn't suppress the grin that had been visible on his mouth since you started talking.
You brought your hands up.
"Totally didn't mean that in a negative way."
Which was the entire truth. So far, the things you knew about him was that he had tattoos, a nice body, a nice personality, good ass freaking conversationalist, and that he was thirty! Thirty! As in, the peak of male hotness. The evil psychological concept of most men only getting hotter as they age.
"I'm sure, I'm sure," Jungkok nodded. "By the way, are you heading out after this?"
"Oh, yeah. Don't have anywhere else to go. I have a nine A.M tomorrow so..." you shrugged, and he nodded in understanding.
"You work as an accountant, right, from what you told the ahjumma?" Jungkook asked you curiously.
"Yeah... it's a very tedious job." You grimaced a little bit. "What about you?"
He tilted his head a bit, picking up a dumpling on his plate. "I'm a software engineer."
"Oh, that's cool."
You nodded to yourself while you processed what he said.
Works in fucking tech;Â another thing you just learned about him.Â
You weren't actively seeking out guys in tech, but why did they seem to come to you voluntarily? God forbid you saw someone who wasn't in there! Was every man working in tech now? Was Jimin really only being truthful when he said they were exactly your type?
"Have you made any software or is that, like, a wrong assumption about you guys?"
Jungkook merely chuckled at your retort.
"Not entirely, no. I've designed a few software in collegeâI'm still doing it. I'm just currently doing more business stuff now." He gave you a sheepish smile. "You?"
"Well, it's just... you knowâI actually work at a tech company. I'm a junior accountant. And, uh, nothing interesting, really. You get to do cool math like programming, and I get to do boring math like calculating money I don't have. It's always a great day at work." You said, couldn't help the laugh that skipped your mouth at your own sarcasm.
Nothing like joking about hating your job to someone who you just met yesterday.
"Programming and coding are not all that, either. It's tedious and... it's just a really boring job. But... it all pays the bills."
You chuckled.
"Yeah. Totally."
Without minding it, you raised the small glass of soju, initiating a toast, one that Jungkook understood immediately and met you in the middle of it.
The night was still you when you walked out of Midday Miso, but unlike any other nights, it was with Jungkook this time walking beside you.
"So you justâwhatâhid him for three months?"
"Well, yes! I wasn't about to get a notice for that! And besides, he was really cute. But he's in good hands now, his owner still sends me pictures of him. He's very grown and big."
"That's insane."
You peered at Jungkook who watched you in awe as you told him about the story of Alfredo, the cat whom you rescued on your way home from work a year ago. The landlady obviously had her fair share of rules and regulations in her building, and keeping pets was an absolute no, which was a shame. Definitely wasn't a shame when you first just moved in the complex, but things got lonely sometimes when you were living alone and company was almost a luxury.
Anyway, as told, you managed to keep Alfredo out of the landlady's sight until you found a highly qualified parent on some online forum who you still kept in contact with to this day.
But as you watched Jungkook, you noticed the way his expression fell into something concerning. He looked worried, which made you feel the same way as a result.
"What are you thinking?" You asked him curiously.
"Oh, nah, I was just... thinking. See, I actually have a dog."
"Oh!" You looked at him wide-eyed.
He has a dog;Â another thing about Jungkook that would qualify him on the regular rounds of hot boy of the month on Twitter dot com.Â
"Yeah."
"You didn't read the terms and conditions of the building?" Your eyebrows formed a concerned expression.
Jungkook chuckled and shook his head. "I did. I justâsuddenly thought about him, is all. He's being taken care of some place. But, you know, I missed him, and I was thinking about getting him here and showing him around my new place and all that."
"Oh... that's a bummer, then. The landlady's strict, even with the small dogs, can you imagine? Is he small, by the way, your dog?
"He's a Doberman, so definitely a big one."
"He must be really cute. What's his name?"
"Bam." He smiled at you, and you could totally see the pride showing on his face at the mention of his dog. And with a tone that you could only identify as someone who's suppressing his enthusiasm a little bit, he added, "You wanna see a picture of him?"
"Sure!"
Jungkook took out his phone from his pocket and showed you images of a big, chocolate brown dog. Bam definitely wasn't like the other regular Dobermans you'd see around. His ears weren't cropped, and his tail wasn't docked either. You didn't know if the lack of surgery was intentional from his side, but you'd like to think he kept it that way because he knew it hurt the dog greatly. From how you've been knowing him, you were certain he just didn't want to put his dog under unnecessary pain, which was honestly heartwarming to think about.
Jungkook was becoming way too good to be true in you head little by little.
"Awe, he's adorable!" You cooed, especially when he swiped through the picture of his pet, Bam, as a pup in what seemed to be Jungkook's arms based on the familiar tattoos that peeked from the exposed arm as seen on the picture. The tattoos also seemed to be new at that time as well, considering that the skin was still yet to be fully covered like now.
"I'm flattered you think that."
"Where is he, by the way? If you don't mind me asking."
"He's at a... friend's place in New York. He's not very good at flying so I didn't bring him with me here, and I thought, I'll only be here for three months, anyway, so." Jungkook shrugged.
Three months. Well. He did say he was only staying here temporarily.
You nodded. "For business, right?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"You grew up there?" You kicked the stone that was caught at the tip of your shoe, putting your fists in the deeper part of your coat's pockets. Summer may be hot during daytime, but it sure as hell was cold on nights like these.
"Nah, I'm from Busan. Flew to California for college and have been there since. Until now, that is."
Jimin was also from Busan, you thought. Though he said they only lived there for a few years until his parents moved to Seoul, but he made sure to visit his hometown every now and then. Most of the time, he made you come with him which you never had complaints about. You lived in the city all your life so going there, especially in the more urbanized area where you and Jimin stayed. Felt like fresh airâwhich Busan had, quite literally.
"My best friend's from Busan too."
"Really? What about you?"
You chuckled before answering, "I, unfortunately, did not come from any interesting place. Born and raised in Seoul, through and through. Though my mom told me she lived in Daegu for many years prior to having me."
"Seoul is an interesting place, though."
"Eh. It's okay." You shrugged, and your nonchalance made you both laugh.
The walk to your apartment building from Midday Miso was not that far. Still, it was five blocks away and while you and Jungkook were currently sharing conversation together and seemingly walking the same path, you weren't sure if you were both walking together there.
As if he read your mind, he suddenly spoke after a few minutes of comfortable silence.
"You mind if we walk together to the building?"
You decided to joke to get the jittery feeling out of your system.
"Scared of the dark, Jungkook?"
"Sure... my five-eleven self is."
You squinted your eyes at him. He did not just go there!
"Is that a slight against my height because I'm five-seven, mind you."
Jungkook stopped in his tracks which made you do the same, and you watched as he put his hand on his waist while the other reach up to his face to place a finger over his chin, seemingly assessing you up and down. You looked at him incredulously.
"You're bumping your height to two inches." He seriously said.
You gasped audibly.
"Oh, shut up,"
You rolled your eyes and turned your back at him, continuing your walk as you heard him behind you bursting in laughter at your reaction.
"I'm kidding!"
You first met Jimin at a college party. He was five years older than you, supposedly out of college by the time you attended, but he always had a problem with rebellionâwhat with his ragged relationship with his parents, he would intentionally flunk his courses as a message to them that he'd always be a black sheep and a proud one at that, hoping it would be enough to convey that they could not force him to be the heir of their company. (Obviously, it had taken him nowhere, given that he was now currently attending a training program to work at said company).
But maybe it was a blessing in disguise that he was set back to five years for graduation. Because you got to know him, and he got to know you.
On the outside, you might look like the total opposite of each otherâbecause Jimin was the definition of extroversion who wasn't afraid to put himself out thereâwhile you, admittedly, were more reserved and usually shied away from any public attention.
As much as you were welcoming to a lot of people, you didn't have a lot of close friends growing upâat least not the kind of friends you'd see on TV showsâbut when Jimin came to your life, you clicked so instantly you could not even figure out where you two exactly began.
The instant way you two clicked, you realized, was like your relationship with Jungkook nowadays.
Ever since that night at Midday Miso, you've been seeing a lot of each other. Granted that it was only in the same place, same time. You'd usually arrive past seven and he, a few minutes later. Jungkook, cladded in his slacks and long-sleeved polo, was becoming a usual sight after a shift, and your business casual clothes was turning as one for him as well.
Your usual seating spot became his as nights passed, and ahjumma, thank God, no longer asked you if he was your boyfriend. You were glad that she was slowly getting acquainted with him though, greeting him with a friendlier smile and tone reserved only for customers like you when he entered the restaurant, and Jungkook seemed to welcome the newfound friendship wholeheartedly.
On the consecutive nights you'd spent with him, it was almost as if you lived quite the same life. Though, you didn't know when he went to work. In fact, you didn't see him during the mornings even though in theory, it could be easy, granted that you both lived across each other. But strangely enough, you'd never caught him retiring to his flat to go to the bus station. You assumed he started earlier than you or way later.
You never asked, it never came up either.
Still, there was some sort of tranquility in the thought that you could spend some time with someone after your shift and just talk about whateverâand whatever meant a lot of things. Random at best. You once told him about the first raccoon you met in your life, and he told you all about the lioness he got to watch when he went to a South Saharan trip a few years ago.
Sometimes, the conversation went around what happened in the office that day. Jungkook noticed the little blot of ink on the cuff of your baby blue long sleeves, and you told him about the jammed printer in the accounting department. He'd told you later on about how he almost fucked up a report, said he was nervous because he was taking on a new role in the office.
Those moments were shared in long walks from Midday Miso to your apartment building, because naturally, you both established a small tradition of walking home together after a night of eating your hearts out at ahjumma's restaurant.
It was a rather sweet gesture, if you were honest to yourself. But you chose not to linger too much on the romantic thoughts that floated in your head, especially when you'd notice the way he made sure to walk on the outer side of the sidewalk, and when your fingers got too close the tips almost touched.
Because Jungkook, for how objectively good looking he was, was more than just his pretty face and physique.
He was kind and funny and genuine unlike any other straight men you've met in your life. Maybe the bar was low, but for all the times you've gotten to talk to him, he never showed any signs of ego most men would by the second hour of your meeting.
In the dating scene as an adult, a lot of men would come up to a date talking about how high they were placed at their company's hierarchy and how much they made in a month, and when they hear about yours, they'd always have a backhanded comment about how "you could only go up from there, right?" and those moments were always a bummer. Yawn-inducing, to be more accurate. Men and their predictability was boring and it was the reason why you'd declare to Jimin almost every time you got home from a date that you were retired from looking for them because most men just plainly fucking sucked.
But with Jungkook... was it different.
You found he didn't talk a lot, and one time you asked him if you were doing itâthe talkingâway too much, but he just chuckled and told you that he didn't mind.
Later on, you learned that he was just more of a listener rather than a talker, and that was not only a pure assumption of yours because he did listen attentively, alright. As for all the random things you've told him about, you never expected him to recall a single thing, not until one time when you passed by a food truck.
"Hey, didn't you say you like sundae?" Jungkook asked, and when you followed where his eyes were, it was at the food truck parked just a few steps ahead from where you both were.
"I do... wow. It's been so long since I saw a food truck around here." You said, following his steps towards the vehicle.
They had tables to dine in, and even if you were still full from eating at Midday Miso that night, the sundae was just too gratifying to decline. Jungkook was the same with the tteokbokki on his small plate, telling you he missed eating at one of these things, as they didn't exactly have anything like this abroad.
After he paid for the food (and of course not without a long, silly, light-hearted argument about it), he came back with two sticks of Melona ice pops which you looked at with widened eyes, animated expression written all over your face especially when he thrusted the purple yam flavor to you.
"Oh my god, how do they have these?"
"I was surprised as well... this is the first time in a while I'm eating this again." Jungkook said and then gestured to the ice pop in your hand, "You like the purple yam, right?"
"Yeah!"
You were about to ask him how he knew, but then you briefly remembered that one time you had a passionate rant about people hating on purple yam ice cream and why they weren't right.
And as you looked at Jungkook, he seemed to remember it all too well.
Jungkook showed genuine interest in the things you'd tell him about. He'd visit the cafes and restaurants you recommended to him as much as he could, and because you've come to exchange numbers with him eventually after almost two weeks of casually hanging out, they sometimes came during lunch break.
1 message received from Jungkook (Unit 446)
That day, you only exchanged contacts the other night, so seeing him on your phone so quickly like that caught you by surprise. It was welcomed though.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:36pm]:Â I went to Cafe Heaven for lunch and loved their ice americano
As soon as you read the first message, another one came.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:36pm]:Â This is Jungkook by the way :)
You laughed at his introduction. As if he didn't see you type his name on your phone last nightâlike he didn't jokingly complain about you putting the (Unit 446) in there but giving in eventually and also adding (Unit 336) to yours in his own contacts.
You [12:38pm]:Â Hi Jungkook! You [12:38pm]:Â im glad u went!!! u should also try their fettuccine alfredo
Seconds later, he sent a picture of the dish you just mentioned which put a smile on your face.
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:39pm]:Â i'll get my refund from you if this doesnt taste good
You [12:40pm]: 1 week of friendship and ur already ripping me off đ¤
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:40pm]:Â đ Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:40pm]:Â first bite Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:41pm]:Â second bite
What was he on, you didn't know. But you were glad that he was slowly coming around, his jokes getting more... how would you say it... less polite? He just stopped apologizing after he said them! He usually would in the first few days, but now in your newfound closeness, it was like you were out of that stage where you tiptoed around each other still, feeling the other one out, trying to figure them out, all that stuff.
Nowadays, it was just more natural. Smooth-sailing. Paradoxical, almost, because of how the relationship felt more defined as well as loose.
You found you liked it that way.Â
Jungkook (Unit 446) [12:42pm]:Â I like it đđť
And to your surprise, he sent you a picture of him, indeed, holding a thumbs up.
You'd like to think you were an expert on going along with the tide because even though you would be classified as introvert by most, you did pretty well in forming relationships with peopleâgranted, most of them were fleeting, at best, hence the lack of bigger circles in most of your lifeâbut you were great with making friends, regardless.Â
And maybe it was how you ended up with this whole thing with Jungkook. Because you were friendly and open, although you wouldn't dare to take all credits because as you mentioned before, he was a great conversationalist.
He didn't talk much as you said, but he didn't ever make you feel like you were talking way too much because he made sure that you knew he was listening, and when he talked, it was always engaging; conversations with him transitioned to different subjects in perfect seugue you would never noticed how you jumped from Melona ice pops to the existential dread you fought every morning before going to work. Â
When it came to humor, Jungkook's was different from Jimin's, of course, and your dynamic with your best friend could never be replicated with somebody else but Jungkook was close to truly becoming your friend, and for that, it was getting easier to ignore his handsome face.
You may have had an embarrassing moment of panicking mentally at seeing such a man in the first meeting, but nowadays, you could hold a conversation with him without thinking how hot he was.
Dare you say, you were starting to think more platonically about him rather than romantically. As you said, you were an expert on going along with the tide.
Or maybe that was too soon a declaration, because there were moments, like now, when you were certain juvenile flirting insisted on happening between you, steering you clear from completely feeling wholly platonic about Jungkook.
"I certainly have a bigger hand than you."
As if you didn't know that, Jungkook brought his hand up to show you it. Confused but not totally minding the whole thing, you proceeded to extend your own hand towards his, pressing them both together. Predictably, his hand could have engulfed the entirety of your own.
Jungkook laughed at the sight, and you didn't know exactly who broke the physical contact first but you were glad it was over as soon as it started.
But you couldn't have forgotten the electric zap along your spine when your hand got so close like that to his. Couldn't have ignored the hot feeling in your cheeks when you were made aware of what you just did.
Wow.
Were you guys flirting? Was he flirting? It was flirting, right? Juvenile, at best, because this was what kids did in high school! And Jungkook's hand was so...
You never imagined what it felt likeânever even crossed your mind until now. Expectations about how his hand felt never formed in your head because you sure as hell never thought about that kind of thing happening in the first place, but Jungkook's hand was the right balance of soft and hard. Calloused in a way most men's hands naturally were, and soft like enough comfort when held and touched.
It wasn't clammy, thank god, but you also wouldn't have thought he had clammy hands, solely because he just looked like he didn't. But god, was it big.
And my goodness, did it make you feel things.
You drank your water fast and cleared your throat, subtly, so that he didn't think too much of it.
"O-okay, but that's just genetics. Doesn't mean you could throw stronger punches."
You said in retaliation to one of your useless debates which now covered the coin-operated boxing arcade machine across the bus station nearby.
Jungkook leaned back against the monobloc chair that was definitely way too flimsy for him.
You were currently hanging out at the dining area of the food truck you came across a few days ago, forgoing Midday Miso for the night. Lately, Jungkook and you have been exploring a few more places other than there. You've tried other restaurants nearby, but ultimately, Midday Miso was still the top favorite and the food truck was becoming a staple in lieu of its convenience and just the overall vibe of eating outside and feeling the breeze of summer night air.
"You got me curious about the boxing machine." Jungkook said, crossing his arms.
"I held the highest score there for like a week, you know? Only did it though to impress the kids who liked to watch."
At that, Jungkook's face lit up in interest.
"We should do that sometime."
"Oh... I see, I see. You wanna impress the kids, too?" You playfully accused, squinting your eyes at him.
He chuckled and waved you off.
"It can be a challenge." Jungkook shrugged and looked at you with a hint of mirth in his eyes.
You let out a puff of breath, amused at his obvious antics.
"What's the catch?"
"Well... free boba delivered to your door for a week if you get the higher score. How's that sound?" He looked at you expectantly.
You chuckled before saying, "I'm gonna rip you off so bad, Jungkook."
"Only if you win, though." He said with a mischievous smirk.Â
"Oh, wow. When, you mean. When I win. So what's in it for you?" You leaned your elbow on the table and studied his face.
He looked at you for a while, then, the smirk from earlier was wiped off and exchanged with a much gentler smile.
"Home-cooked dinner at my place next week Friday."
Your eyebrows met.
"You want me to cook you something? Jungkook, do you have a death wish? I may either give you unintentional food poisoning or burn your house down, there's no in between."
"No," Jungkook laughed at your insane conclusion. "Sorry, I should've specified. I mean if you lose, I'll be cooking us a meal at my place."
"Oh."
You were left staring at him, a bit dumbfounded.
He just said he wanted to cook you guys a meal. At his place.
He was inviting you to his place. His personal space.
"It won't be better than Midday Miso but I think I can keep up." Jungkook added with a sheepish smile and scratched the back of his head in that seemingly boyish manner.
"Sure..." you responded, a bit delayed, much to your effort of not showing your big surprise at his offer. Before he noticed the way you were not believing what you heard, you chose to quip in a (hopefully) cheeky, "That is if you win, though."
Jungkook only hummed and then nodded.
"If I win."
He said, smiling at you.
This was dangerous.
The whole thing was teetering to something that was not very platonic, and just as you were starting to think this whole thing was!
Jimin always told you that you were bad at flirting, but in your defense, how were you supposed to know, exactly, if someone was flirting with you? A lot of people were friendly like that! Jungkook was maybe like that? Had you shown interest and he noticed so now he was playing into it? But that would be uncharacteristic of him. You didn't think he'd be the type to do something cruel like that...
But the tide was always rising and falling, they said, and the good thing was; you knew how to go along with the current.
So you did what you do best.
"Would you like to donate to the poor?"
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but there's a chance this card's gonna decline because I am the poor."
The cashier looked you in the eye with an even more impassive look than the one she had before you got your turn on the counter.
"Could've just said no." She said, punching your order away and you had to shamefully swipe your card and leave to go over where Jimin was.
"The cashier just snubbed me for being poor." You complained to Jimin, moving your coat to the next seat and settling in in yours.
Jimin took a sip from his latte and looked at you dead in the eye and said, "I'll call the manager if you want."
"Fuck off." You retaliated immediately. Jimin snorted at your way too predictable response.
See, this has happened way too many times more than what your fingers could count. You could not even pinpoint the exact time when Jimin started to joke about going full-on Karen-mode when you complained about a single little thing at the places you went to.
Anyway, you were currently on a lunch break when Jimin texted to see if you were free. What better way to spend your lunch than with your best friend? The company's canteen food was getting tired and they hiked up their prices. Your office's kitchen also ran out of Solhee's â your coworker â biscuits and so you thought you had to make do of Jimin's money for that day. You told him your motives yourself and as a petty retort, he told you to pay for your own pasta â at a cafĂŠ that was way too expensive for its own good.
You stole a bite off his churros, and predictably, he rolled his eyes at you.
"Why'd you want to see me, by the way? What's up? You don't have training?" you glanced at your wristwatch, reading 12:40pm.
Soon, you were casually taking over his plate of churros. For how ridiculously priced it was, it sure tasted good as hell.
"I got the day off." Jimin shrugged.
You eyed him suspiciously almost immediately.
"Did you really...?"
It was a few seconds before Jimin gave in and took back his plate.
"Okay, no, I ditched the training today but for the record it's for a very important reason."
You put your hand over your chest and contorted your face in an awed, touched expression.
"The important reason being... meeting me?"
"Ew, no," Was Jimin's quick, disgusted, response â which earned a laugh from you as usual.
From your peripheral vision, you saw the waiter heading towards your direction and so you waited for him to come over and serve you your pasta and frappe. After thanking him, you huddled closer to your best friend and asked, "Okay, what is it then?"
Jimi pursed his lips, making your eyebrows meet.
"It's kinda... bummer news."
"You're pregnant?"
"No, you'd be way too happy and I can't be a single dad," He shook his head as if not even wanting to imagine that.
"Namjoon looks like he's gonna take care of it with you." You sing-sang, sipping on your coffee and winking at him indiscreetly â emphasis on indiscreetly because you never knew how to wink properly.
What you did not expect, was the look on Jimin's face when you mentioned Namjoon.
"Well..." He trailed off, and you waited for it curiously; anticipating his impending answer in return because your conversation was always quick-witted like that. But right now, Jimin's expression was devoid of any jokes.Â
Not something you expected when you just mentioned his boyfriend.
"Iâ did something happen?" You quickly dropped the teasing tone and exchanged it with a concerned one, eyes looking at him with worry.
Jimin closed his eyes for a while and let out a deep breath. "See, that's the bummer news."
"Do you want to tell me? Or we can justâ"
He cut you off before you could even finish your sentence. But he did it with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes â and this was Jimin. His eyes did not not reach his eyes when he smiled!
"He's going to Italy."
"Oh."
When the pause prolonged for over a minute, with you looking at him mouth agape, Jimin let out a heavy sigh once again and shook his head.
"I know. It's work... and I always understood that. He travels a lot and we're both okay with it. But it was usually just around the country, not another continent. I mean, what did he mean Italy? And that's not even the worst part. He knew a month ago he was going but he only told me two days ago and he's leaving Thursday," Jimin looked at you to take a pause, seemingly trying to look for a reaction.
You thought, that's tomorrow.
As if he read your mind, he nodded, sounding almost defeated.
"I know."
"Oh, Jimin..." You said, not exactly knowing what to say.
Jimin and Namjoon had been together for over a year. At least, officially, because they spent the last three years just casually hooking up on and off. You liked them together and had been more than glad when they finally put a label to it â exactly why you knew Namjoon enough to not badmouth him when you usually would men Jimin usually dated. You knew perfectly well that Namjoon genuinely cared about your best friend and he loved him. So if Jimin was at a loss for this obvious mistake on his boyfriend's part, even more so you were.
"He's been blowing up my phone ever since." Jimin added, glancing at his phone on the table. "Intentionally didn't charge my phone today so I don't receive his calls and texts."
That prompted you to remember the message you received from Namjoon last night.
"Oh, that's why he texted me yesterday. He asked about you, and I told you through text but you didn't answer." Things were starting to make sense now, and as you observed Jimin's face, they were getting clearer. "You never talked since?"
Jimin pursed his lips. He took his coffee back to his mouth and sipped while looking away. "Nope."
"Jimin." You tilted your head.
He looked at you again, and you knew exactly that he was thinking the same thing as you: It was within his right to feel off about what Namjoon did, but regardless; Jimin was being a little petty, and he needed to communicate with his boyfriend instead of giving him the cold shoulder.
There was a pout that formed on Jimin's lips right after.
"I know. I just..."
"He could've told you sooner?" He nodded at your words. You mirrored that. "He should have. Italy is not Busan â it's not just a train ride away."
Jimin sighed, looking exasperated now. "I told him that exactly. I'm not even mad he's going to Italy, I just think I deserve to know right after he was told about it."
You nodded. "You should really talk. It sounds like he wants to apologize, anyway, given that he's now trying to talk to me to get through you."
"Sorry you got caught up in this. I'm gonna talk to him about it."
"Eh, it's fine. Joon and I are also friends, you know?" You shrugged, genuinely not minding Namjoon coming to you.Â
You liked Namjoon and thought that he was the perfect match for Jimin. They were cute together and just seemed to... take the best out of each other. You'd go to any lengths to keep them together, as long as Jimin wanted Namjoon and as his boyfriend. You've seen Jimin go from relationships to relationships, some just fleeting and simple dalliances, and most destructive and were just... not good for him. You've never seen your best friend truly happy and committed in a romantic relationship other than with Namjoon, and as someone who cared about him, you'd do a lot of things to make him happy.
"Here's another thing, his flight is tomorrow at 11:30pm in the evening. Mom's birthday dinner is at 10." Jimin usually had his composure everytime, and it was very rarely you'd see him show any worry because he liked everybody to think he was in control of every situation. You smiled. Classic Jimin. He'd only ever show his true nature to you though, and that was exactly why he looked at you with worried eyes and continued to say, "I really wanna be there to send him off."
The call time for his mother's party was at 10 and naturally people would start swarming in way past that time. If Jimin were to sneak out way too early, you knew his mother was not going to be happy about it and his father would give him an even bigger shit for it. Sure, he could cancel, but what would he say? That their supposed cishet son is sending off his boyfriend at the airport for the night? He couldn't reason work either because he didn't exactly have one.
After having his wrongful DUI accusation last springâ which was actually already settled, on the grounds that it was definitely not DUI and the owner of the other car just overreacted to a fender bender, the media was adamant on tactically using that to taint his family's image and it unfortunately succeeded â hence, why Jimin had been laying low these past few months; going to training programs, obeying his parents more than usual, doing what they wanted...
You sighed. Your best friend deserved so much better.
"Don't worry, I'll find a way to get us to leave early." You told him after awhile.
Jimin arched his brow, intrigued.
Waving him off, you said, "I can fake something."
As if hearing some magic words, Jimin suddenly perked up.
"No way you're using the diarrhea card?"
Giving him a dirty look, you shook your head. "Nah, not during a dinner party. It's gotta be something new and less... gross."
"Oh, oh!" Jimin put a finger over his lip. "What about a sprained ankle? Can you pull that off?"
You deadpanned. "Okay, you ought to pay me more if you want me to do that."
"I can, but I won't. Stop ripping me off, I'm your best friend."
"Jimin, I'll save you from your family. I'm great at this." You said jokingly, but you hoped that he knew you weren't just jesting and were serious about it.
With the appreciation masking your best friend's face, though, you knew he got the message right away, but as you looked at him longer, you realize that he was about to say something and you quickly pulled back, shaking your head.
Jimin quickly reacted. "No! You know what, I'm gonna say itâ"
"Don't say it." You quickly cut him off, giggling while you shake your cup of coffee.
"You can't keep me from saying I loâ"
"Jimin, I will tell everybody in this place you watch dubbed anime, I'm serious."
He gasped, quite dramatically.
"You did not just go there!" Then, he lowered his voice a bit, arching his brow at you, vindicative when he said, "You wore skinny jeans a month ago."
"How dare you, you wore a fuckass poncho last week. I saw on your IG story."
"That was from Namjoon and he also gave you one, FYI."
You grimaced. "Tell him I love him but I'm not wearing a poncho, Jimin."
"I was gonna tell you I love you and that you're the best person ever but now I have to rethink all of that." He rolled his eyes, and when the banter ended with you having the last words, you laughed at his face.
"God, you're just never beating me at this."
"Please, we both know you write your mediocre insults on your diary every night trying to one-up me, __. But let's talk about something else."
"I'm not even gonna acknowledge the diary thing but, sure, shoot." You said, starting to eat your pasta.
Jimin looked at your food full of judgement and grimaced. "Is that shrimp? Your doctor is growing grey pubes as we speak," He commented, and you knew he was referring to your shrimp allergy so you shushed him.
"This is vegan shrimp. It's tofu."
He just shook his head, disagreement written on his face. But he let it pass, anyway.
"Anyway, how's Mr. 446?"
The pasta suddenly entered the wrong track.
"Girl," Jimin was quick to offer you the glass of water on his side and you were just as fast to drink it. "You okay?"
"I'm sure there are existing cases of people dying because food got on the wrong track while they're eating, but yeah, sure, I'm okay." When you finished the water, you looked at Jimin who was just doing the same thing.
Crossing his arms, he eyed you expectantly. "Well?"
"I mean... what do you want me to say?" you told him, and you could've sworn you did not want to show anything on your face but you were certain there was a huge smile on it and for some reason, you couldn't help it.
Jimin's jaw dropped, expressions of disbelief and amusement when he asked you curiously, "What do you mean by that?"
"Okay, look, Jiminâ" You scratched the back of your head, feeling a little sheepish to tell him all about Jungkook. "He told me we'd get dinner at his place this Friday if he wins this... thing."
His mouth was agape by then and you couldn't help but laugh.
"You... slut."
You would absolutely be rolling off the floor if you weren't at a public place the moment he mouthed the word, but still, you couldn't help but retort back.
"Shut up, you can't be the only one whoring around in this friendship." Jimin snorted at that and you both had to stifle your laughter when you noticed a woman from across the room eyeing you both.
This was one of the reasons why Jimin and you didn't belong in public places other than bars or clubs â because you were way too rowdy together for civilization.
"So you're saying you're whoring around?" He eyed you suspiciously.
"Wrong information. It's actually kind of platonic."
Jimin quickly waved you off. "Babe, if a guy invites you to his place, nothing is ever platonic about it. What do you think you'll do together there? Stare at each other for two hours straight?"
God, you hated and loved that he enables your delusions.
"Okay, you're being insane about this. It's just dinner," Trying to fight off the not-so-very-platonic things that suddenly played in your head after hearing his previous remark. To show that you didn't care, you added for good measure, "âAnd anyway, we had some sort of deal about it so it's not definite."
Your best friend just shrugged. "I'm all for it. But you're sure he isn't a serial killer, right?"
"Jimin, god, no," you chuckled at that. "I mean, I don't really know for sure, but we're friends now and as far as I know, he's never shown signs of psychopathy."
Jimin and you hadn't hung out in a while, so you haven't really told him all about Jungkook yet and the things you got to know about him. He didn't even know his name. As far as he was concerned, Jungkook was still Mr. 446, and you were fine keeping it that way. He had a lot on his plate right now, anyway.
"Just being cautious." He sing-sang, putting both his hands in the air.
You shook your head.
"Anyway, we also need to talk about what we're gonna wear tomorrow," Jimin suddenly said. "You got the Pinterest board I sent you, right? For the inspo."
Grinning, you grabbed your iPad from your bag and got to the link immediately. Your phone died on the way to the cafĂŠ. Good thing you had another device and brought it with you.
"I also added a few things in here. Gold and black's the theme, right?" You clarified, scrolling through the board you and Jimin both contributed to. Your best friend took it upon himself to transfer seats so he could be beside you and look at your screen at the same time.
"You're gonna look so good in Schiaparelli, babe," Jimin said while checking out the pictures you added.
"It's just an inspo, I don't actually need to wear a Schiaparelli." You chuckled.
"Who do you think your best friend is?"
You both laughed at that but it stopped when a notification popped up on your computer. Recognizing the address as your work email, you were quick to hover over it. When you were about to open it to see the full message, your iPad suddenly died.
"Shoot." You looked at Jimin with a straight face. "I forgot to plug it in. Didn't notice the battery."
Jimin grimaced. "Didn't bring any power cable."
"We'll have to do with a phone. Mine died."
You were just about to ask him for his but then you remembered what he said about avoiding Namjoon, hence, his phone was of no use either.Â
"We're gonna have to freestyle."
Last year, Mrs. Park's party was held at a theater hall â your first time at one, by the way.
Tonight, it was at their mansion.
You've only ever been to the Park's a total of one time, which was now. Stepping a foot inside here for the first time in your life, the house felt unreal. It was the epitome of money and wealth and everything regal in the world â like a palace of some sort. They had butlers and guards at the gates so maybe that wasn't an exaggeration, but damn, Jimin truly came from money.
Regardless of how shiny the whole building was in both literal and figurative senses though, there was an emptiness to it. It didn't look lived in â which was a fair assumption for a house this big. It definitely did not look like people liked staying here, and maybe that was not a stretch, because as soon as he turned 18, Jimin moved away and lived in his own place ever since. You asked him on your way here and he told you it was his first time this year to visit his own house.
The decoration was sick, though. Granted, they must have surely hired people to do it but at least they'd hired excellent ones. You wouldn't have expected anything less from Jimin's mom.
Jimin and you arrived at 10pm sharp, and thankfully, people were already starting to fill the place up. It was now past 15 minutes to 10pm since you arrived and there really was nothing different that went on from last year; you saw some familiar faces, politicians, and celebrities. Jimin introduced you to some people as his girlfriend, and you got to have quick chats with his model friends.
You knew it didn't actually matter if you thought about it carefully, but there was truly nothing compared to the feeling you get when you see someone in the flesh that you only see on TV all your life. You didn't feel lucky to see them in person, per se, you were just poured over the realization that these people were actually real and they weren't just some sort of simulation to keep the entertainment industry of your country afloat.
Although, you did meet Han Sol â an actress whose works you genuinely admired. Jimin just told you her husband was his second cousin.
It wasn't later that Jimin and you were invited to his family's table, where some of his cousins and immediate family were.
The greetings went pretty normal. Normal as in: Jimin's mom didn't say anything about your weight first thing first. Granted, she didn't try to hide the look of disappointment on her face when she saw you with his son. Probably reeling at the fact that you were still "dating" each other even after a year â she was probably under the impression that it wasn't serious between you two last year. His father, meanwhile, was... quiet. As usual. A man who obviously didn't really say much except ask Jimin about the training program and his siblings' jobs.
Mr. Park didn't really talk to you, just like last year. Like you were almost invisible to him â and you were glad that was the case. He probably didn't like to acknowledge your supposed relationship in the first place. Probably knew that you were working a middle-class job and didn't want to know any further. But at least, he wasn't saying anything. That was nice.
"Where's your cousin?" Asked Jimin's mom suddenly, looking at his son.
"He said he got caught up in traffic. Sent 20 minutes ago." Jimin shrugged. You would ask him about which cousin they were referring to but they had like millions of it at these events so you didn't bother.
Mrs. Park shook her head disapprovingly. "That kid. Always late to the family dinners. Did Junghyun ever teachâ"
"Hey,"
Your attention was then focused to the man who just arrived. Black tie, tall... dashing. Jimin was a good-looking individual and his family, as evil as they may be as per his words, were blessed with good genes. If you were to look at the new man that arrived to the table very carefully, you'd say he almost looked familiar.
"Oh, Junghyun!"
Jimin glanced at you and discreetly mouthed, "Cousin."
"Aunt, happy birthday." He said after laughing at Jimin's mother coos. He looked across the table and continued, "Hi, uncle. Jaeyul, Sunghoon, Jimin." They all greeted him back and you could feel the hairs on your nape starting to stand up when his eyes landed on you once again. "And this is...?"
"Oh, that's Jimin's girlfriend, __." Jaeyul, Jimin's brother said.
"Hi." you greeted him, waving a bit.
"Oh?" Junghyun immediately looked at Jimin, eyes not hiding his shock. When you trained your eyes on Jimin, you felt his fake smile. "That's great, man. I didn't know you had a girlfriend. Hi, miss...?"
"It's __." you filled in.
"Nice to meet you, __." He said with a smile. The more you looked at him, the more you could almost pinpoint who he looked like â but that shouldn't really matter.
Junghyun looked over Jimin's parents once again, "Anyway, sorry I'm a bit late, got caught up in traffic."
Jimin cleared his throat.
"How about you, Junghyun? Got a girlfriend yet?" He asked as soon as Junghyun sat on the opposite side of the long table.
You could see Jimin's mother's curiosity peaking at that.
"Tell us, dear. Last time you were dating Kang Iseul, right? The actress. You're still with her?"
Everybody at the table nodded while you almost choked on the smoked quail you were eating. He was dating Kang Iseul? She was a popular actress who announced a hiatus three years ago. That actress Kang Iseul?
Junghyun chuckled and shook his head. "Nah, aunt, that was my brother, and uh, no, I'm not dating anybody currently."
"Oh well. I just wish your brother stops dating that woman. I never really liked that girl. She acts way too self-righteous! I mean, who cut ties with their billionaire father and live independently just so they can say they're self-made? It's ridiculous." Jimin's mother said in that usual snotty tone of hers, and you could not possibly process all of what was going on.
If it wasn't clear to you a moment ago, it was crystal now. Unfortunately, you were a bit chronically online and were there in real time when one random tweet blew up about Kang Iseul being a nepotism baby. But was this guy's brother really dating her? The most important and concerning thing, though, was that: why was Jimin's mom always so annoying about who her family members date? And this was not even her immediate family, mind you.
"Jina," Jimin's father had a warning tone when he called her but Jimin's mom just shrugged him off with a "tsk!"
"Kids are so ungrateful nowadays, don't you think? Anyway, Junghyun dear, you remember the Kang gala I told you about two months ago?" Jimin's mom looked pointedly at Jimin and you bit your lip.
Of course, here comes her passive aggressive disapproval of you.Â
"Kang Heesu and her sister Kang Hani will be there. Heesu is a wonderful woman," she chuckled, looking over at Jimin's direction subtly. You had to physically restrain yourself from rolling your eyes. Couldn't she be more obvious about acting as a wingman for Jimin and Heesu? But she continued, just like she always did. "I also heard Kang Hani is going for senior partner at Yoon and Yang, you may be interested. Pretty lady."
Junghyun just awkwardly laughed. "I'll keep that in mind."
Jimiin's father suddenly spoke, making everyone look at him.
"Where is that kid?" He said, authority dripping through his voice. Jimin was obviously not close to his father, and who would be? Mr. Park was way too intimidating. You found it funny to think if he ever did anything remotely paternal towards his children.
"We were supposed to go together but he said he had something to finish. He'll be arriving later." Junghyun said, obviously not oblivious to the "kid" Mr. Park was referring to. You were way too uncaring to actually try to figure that out.
"I see." Jimin's father nodded. "How's Jeon and Min, Junghyun? I heard you were just appointed managing partner last week."
Junghyun responded with a "yes" and they started to talk about the law firm â you assumed â and other people they mutually knew related to the business.
You knew Jimin's complicated family tree was composed of all sorts of professionals, but damn, they had lawyers in here too. It was like out of a career day event at grade schools.
"Is it true Gukka's going to be CEO?" Jimin's mother said, joining the conversation.
You were glad they were doing all the talking. Last year, they talked to you like they were interrogating you and that was not nice.
"Well, dad's not giving up the company so soon. Gukka's going for interim CTO first." Junghyun said with a polite smile.
Gukka. That must be the brother of Junghyun, although it sounded more like a nickname than a real name.
"Your brother's a hard worker. He's looking at a CEO position, some are still at training programs." Jimin's father remarked with a pointed tone.
Oh, fuck me, you thought to yourself. You thought it was gonna take awhile for the comparison to start, but it seemed they were determined to beat their record of one hour from last year.
You tried subtly looking at Jimin to see if he was okay or anything, but you felt him squeezing your wrist under the table. His face was devoid of any emotion as he continued with his own food.
Junghyun, meanwhile, was obviously taken aback by the response and also looked over at Jimin. He was quick to recover, though â probably knew that was a jab at his cousin just like every other person in the room. Atmosphere grew tense, and you had to squirm in your seat a little bit.
"Training programs help a lot, though." Junghyun awkwardly laughed. You were starting to feel bad for him as well.
"Well, you're lawyering. Trainings are important. Mine's kinda stupid." Jimin said which made everybody look at him, including you.
"You're learning anything yet, son?" His father pointedly looked at him.
"We'll see."
Jimin's dismissive tone made you feel the eye roll he would've done after saying that.
Look, he rebelled for the most part of his life so him being passive-aggressive towards his family was not a new thing, but to witness it was both nerve-wracking and honestly... funny. His parents were such assholes so they probably deserved his attitude.
Mrs. Park smiled a fake one before looking at you.
"Well, what about you __ dear? You're a... what was that again? How is that going for you?"
Because you wanted to piss them off, you mirrored her fake smile and said, "I got fired six months ago at my accounting job."
"Pftâ"Â you pinched Jimin's arm at his reaction.
Of course he'd laugh at that. You asked him how you could piss his parents off tonight just to get back at them from last year and he told you to pretend to be unemployed or you work a minimum wage job because that was their biggest ick. Jimin didn't know you were going to come through.
"Oh."
The look on Jimin's mom's face looked as if she heard the most scandalous thing ever, and if his father's frown was deep even before the dinner started, his face was now below the ground. It felt satisfying to get those looks on their faces. Good! They were such assholes. Imagine getting devastated at someone being unemployed? Okay â for the record, being unemployed was devastating but these people weren't sympathizing with that, they found it humiliating in an elitist way criminal almost.Â
You nodded, your lips almost getting tired from stretching them too far.
"Yeah. Anyway, I started working at a local burger joint. You should visit us sometime."
"I'm vegan." Jimin's mom said, her face now drained with the fake joy she's worn all night.
"We have vegan options." you quipped. Jimin once again made a sound beside you, hiding his laughter.
"Wait, really? They offer vegan options at a street burger joint?" Sunghoon, the youngest of the Park brothers, asked.
You almost laughed at the genuine curiosity in his voice. He was still in high school and from what Jimin told you, he was a nice kid. He wasn't very close to any of his brothers, though.
"Nah, it's the only one in town." You bullshit one more time, drinking the wine beside you. "Sorry, can I excuse myself for a minute?"
They nodded and you stood up, heading to the bathroom, brisking once you got out of their sight to get there more quickly.
It was now 10:30 pm â meaning, you had to do something to get Jimin out of here now if he wanted to be on time at the airport to send off Namjoon.
Once you got inside, you looked at yourself in the mirror and sighed.Â
This whole thing was sucking the shit out of your soul, but you needed to get through it.
It took you awhile to finish your pep talk in the bathroom.
If only you could've have locked yourself in there to avoid socializing with anybody, you willingly would. But you were running out of time and unfortunately, you had something to do and that was to fake some illness to get both Jimin and you out of here.
When you got out to approach the family's table one more time, you suddenly stopped in your tracks.
The table was at least fifteen meters away from where you stood, but you could clearly see the side in which Jimin's cousin, Junghyun, sat, facing your direction. He wasn't the issue â no, far from it. It was the guy beside him who wore the same set of black tie as him; the face attached to the body who wore it though, was someone you did not expect to see.
Why the fuck was Jungkook, Unit 446, here?!
From where you were, you could see him engaging with Junghyun and Jimin's parents. You couldn't hear them, of course, but it was clear that they were acquainted â close â even from afar.
Why did he look so comfortable with the Parks? Why was he at the family table laughing and conversing with everybody, including Jimin? Why did he seem like he went to many of these, like this was just another Thursday for him?
There was a waiter who walked past you and you were grateful for it because had it not been the case, people would start to get weirded out about you standing on the same place longer than necessary, looking stoned. That was also an opportunity to run away from the situation without Jungkook possibly seeing and recognizing you.
"I'll take this," You told the waiter and grabbed the glass of champagne and quickly turned on your heels, heading to the opposite side of the family table where the Parks, and apparently, Jungkook were.
You found yourself heading to the bathroom again, your feet seemingly developing a mind of its own as it led you there unconsciously. You knew you'd be in trouble if they found out about you putting the champagne glass in the sink, but you needed to get inside the toilet and think over everything that was happening tonight.
What the fuck. What the fuck!  Again, why the hell was Jungkook here?
As far as you knew, he was just a regular man that happened to be living across from you. He was just supposed to be some guy you were regularly hanging out with nowadays. Your friend. Your crush â whatever! What he wasn't supposed to be is be here at your best friend's mother's birthday party and hanging out with his family!
Your phone dinged, a message notification from Jimin welcoming you.
cuntress #1 [10:32pm]:Â girl what happened I saw u going back to the bathroom?
You didn't know why it was suddenly too hot, but you felt the balls of sweat starting to form on the side of your forehead.
You [10:33pm]:Â im going with the diarrhea excuse
cuntress #1 [10:33pm]: tbh idc atp I just wanna go to joon đ
"Shit!"
Right! Joon. Namjoon. Jimin needed to go to Nmajoon as soon as possible.
cuntress #1 [10:33pm]:Â also another cousin has arrived u rmr jeon jungkook he's junghyun's brother cuntress #1 [10:33pm]:Â love this guy but moms starting to compare me to him and I need out right NEOW im justt aking hits after hits jesusssssss
You could just feel the blood draining from your face as soon as you read Jungkook's name in the text.
Jeon Jungkook. Jungkook. Gukka. Kook-a.
That was why the Junghyun guy looked familiar. Because he had the same coloring of Jeon Jungkook. Because they were goddamn siblings.
You started to replay some memories in your head, trying to figure out if you've ever heard Jungkook talk about his family in one of your conversations. But as far as you remembered, he never did. All you knew about him was that he was from the States, and he only got here because of work and he had a dog and as far as you were concerned, his cousin was definitely not Park fucking Jimin, your best friend.
Pacing around the confined space of the toilet, you tried to wrack your brain if you've ever mentioned Jimin to him and in the event that you did, why he never told you that he was his cousin â but you came up blank. Blank because you never told him about your best friend's name... and in turn, Jimin didn't know what Mr. 446's name was, either. They were both genuinely oblivious about the whole thing and couldn't have made you a fool in the situation.
In short, you were the one who was stupid as hell for not connecting the dots sooner.
"Hey, you just landed?"
If it was a private conversation Jimin would've left the room but since he didn't, you decided to stay in bed, kind of listening in to the conversation, but also not, as you turned the volume down of the show you were watching earlier on your laptop.
"Nah, you want me to pick you up?" Jimin sat up on the edge of the bed and you looked at him curiously. "Sure, I'm free, Kook. You have a place to stay? Hotel suite or something?" He nodded to whatever the other person was saying on the other line. "Oh, you're here for three months? Thought you were just flying in for mom's birthday?"
It was moments after they said goodbye that Jimin turned to you to ask, "Well, my cousin's apparently staying here for three months. Got this job thing going on."
"Fuck me." You hissed, remembering that time when Jimin told you about his cousin staying here for three months because of work.
cuntress #1 [10:35pm]: its either ur taking a guinness world record breaker piss there or u really do have diarrhea now and ur shitting cuntress #1 [10:36pm]: anyway get this, jungkook's gonna be interim cto at your company did u know that??????????????????
You almost dropped your phone upon reading the last message.
What the hell did he mean by that?
Heart beating fast as if it wanted to break out of your own ribcage, you closed your eyes and read Jimin's message once again. There was no way he would be shitting you about any of this. He knew where you worked at and you knew your current company was his uncle's, and now that you knew Jungkook was his cousin...
Shit. Was this what they were talking about at the table earlier? About Junghyun saying his brother was gonna be interim CTO? Did he mean Jeon Jungkook all along? Your freaking neighbor?
Suddenly, you remembered the email you received that afternoon that you never bothered to check again because you simply forgot about it. Who even actually checks their work email? Literally no one. You spend your weeks facing your computer while email flew in like porn ads on a shady website, you weren't about to willingly go to the app and check it on your leisure time.
But maybe you should have.
Fingers involuntarily shaking in their wake as you switched to your work email on your phone, you clicked on the recent unread message that was on top from the HR department.
Subject: Invitation to Ceremony: Announcement of Interim CTO Dear Blue Nexus Inc. employee, We hope this email finds you well. We would like to inform you that a ceremony has been scheduled on July 29, 2028, 10:00 am at the AVR Hall 5, 12th floor. The purpose of this meeting is to announce the appointment of our interim Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Mr. Jeon Jungkook. As you may be aware, our previous CTO, Mr. Shin Juman, is currently on medical leave recovering from a stroke. While he is recuperating and undergoing treatment, it has become necessary for us to appoint an interim CTO for an indefinite period of time to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of our operations. Your presence at this ceremony is highly valued as we introduce the new leadership to the team and outline our strategic direction moving forward. Light refreshments will be served. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to seeing you at the ceremony. Best regards, HR Department
You knew that feeling when you were just taking hits and hits? This was it.
So not only was Jeon Jungkook Jimin's cousin, he was also gonna be the interim CTO of the company you were currently working at. He was technically going to be your boss, and you would be both working in the same place all the while living across each other where he would see you taking out your trash every Sunday morning in your worn-out highschool PE shirt and pants. He was going to be your boss working at the company you complained to him about on the nights you walked together to your shared apartment complex.
You flirted with Jungkook. You flirted with the guy who was the son of the owner of your whole company building â and not only that, he was your best friend's cousin, to add salt to injury.
You [10:38pm]:Â jimin we need to get out of here
cuntress #1 [10:38pm]:Â ive been saying
You [10:38pm]:Â but i cant go out there again. Just tell them i had a problem in the bathroom??
cuntress #1 [10:38pm]: ok on it cuntress #1 [10:38pm]: im kind of convinced u shitted in there tho????????
You rolled your eyes, but at the same time found an opportunity in that. Jimin can't know the truth.
You [10:39pm]:Â u cant judge me for having a very human experience fuck u the cake i ate earlier was giving cake boss
cuntress #1 [10:39pm]:Â KJAHFKGSIDFHDSHASFHSKJBF
You [10:39pm]:Â im literally doing this for u and joon
cuntress #1 [10:39pm]: IKNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks to ur stomach problems cuntress #1 [10:39pm]: im going there
You [10:40pm]:Â make sure they don't see us again to really sell the whole im-embarassed-thing
cuntress #1 [10:40pm]:Â ON IT! Were going out the back door I don't think they'll notice
You couldn't even find it in you to laugh a little bit at your silly exchange and scheme, because you were way too stressed about what you just found out.
You let out a controlled, heavy breath, leaning your back on the door and shut your eyes aggressively.
"What the hell am I gonna do after this?"

SUMMARY:Â Harry is very strict about staying away from students as a young and handsome professor, but there is one person he can't get out of his head and a Christmas party brings an unexpected turn.
MASTERLISTÂ |Â SUPPORT ME!
Harry hates these type of parties, mostly because he canât imagine inviting dozens of students into his home, his private space, have the roam around and spend an entire evening with them, talking and pretending like they arenât just trying to get a better grade at the end of the semester with their too friendly behavior. Or, in his case, some girls try to push the boundaries and flirt with him, hoping to hook up with him.Â
He is not stupid. He has heard students whisper about him several times, he notices the heart eyes when he is talking in class and he has gotten several phone numbers on papers since he started his PHD studies and started teaching last year. His friends teased him about being the heartthrob of the faculty, but he didnât think it would actually happen and to this extent. To avoid any possible scandals, not that he planned to make any, he has put on quite a rigid mask towards the students to scare them off from even trying, though that hasnât stopped some of them from wanting to shoot their shot.Â
He wouldnât have come to this party, he would rather be home and continue his research thatâs still not even close to being done, but Professor Bradford, or Stella as she requests Harry to call her, is the only person he gets along with in the faculty. She is 18 years older than Harry, but still younger than the rest of the old men who have been teaching here since probably before the declaration of independence was signed. Those men are the reason younger people donât like classic literature anymore, with their outdated ways of teaching and unwillingness to bring something modern into their lectures they are scaring the new generations away. But not Stella. She is one of the reasons Harry went into his PHD and now he gets to work with her. He couldnât just reject her invitation for her annual Christmas Party she holds for her students and some colleagues.Â
Now he is standing by the wall, drinking mulled wine and just gritting his teeth, trying to calculate how early is too early to leave. A couple of girls have already tried to chat him up, they like to circle him, leave him almost no room to escape and then make him talk about school stuff, but then they slyly bring up personal things, hoping to break his usual character, but he sees through them always.Â
Harryâs best friend, Niall always teases him that he should just give in and have fun with one of them. His morals are a lot looser than Harryâs, thatâs for sure.Â
Just as he is about to look for the bathroom, not to use it but to hide for a bit, another group of girls spots him and he can already feel his skin crawling as they approach him from down the hallway. He is quick to assess the situation, but he realizes he has no chance of fleeing before they reach him.Â
âProfesor! So good to see you here!âÂ
And here we go.Â
It goes the same, they are extremely nice and inquiring about his plans for the next semester and then suddenly they are talking about summer and Harry knows they are moments away from asking what heâll be doing once the school year is over. One of the girls is talking about going to Italy on a yacht and the others chime in with their own ridiculously over the top plans while Harry is avoiding to even look at them, his eyes roam around the other guests.Â
Thatâs when he sees her.Â
Just down the hall he can peek into the kitchen and there she is, with a boy Harry assumes to be her boyfriend. Heâs seen them around campus the past few weeks, he even waited for her after Harryâs class and saw them walk away together as he fought the way his stomach churned every time.Â
Since the moment she walked into his class at the beginning of the semester Harry has been feeling like he is losing his mind. Whether it be the way she laughs with her friends before class or focuses with undivided attention as Harry explains something by the board, or says hello every time she passes him in the cafeteria, Harry canât stop thinking about her for days after even though he knows such feelings should be banned from his mind when it comes to a student. Every time he catches himself thinking about her he wants to throw himself out the window, but he still canât fight it. Thereâs something in her that draws him in and swallows him whole and itâs not just the looks. Unlike a lot of students who take his classes for easy credits or to drool after him, she is there to learn as much as she can and sheâs had the most brilliant thoughts on certain subjects Harry has ever encountered, making him almost jealous he wasnât the one to think about them.Â
She is⌠unmatched. And forbidden, but impossible to ignore. Sheâs been his vice for months.
From where he stands it appears she is having a fight with said boyfriend, her always cheerful expression is now rather upset and confused while the boy seems to be over the conversation, almost irritated by her, dismissed. Harry tries to appear not too obvious about watching them, but he is also way too fixated on her to ignore whatâs happening just down the hallway.Â
He glances away just for a few seconds, but the next time he looks back he sees the boy stomping away, irritated, while she is left there, pulling on her coat before disappearing through the backdoor, swallowed by the darkness of the unlit back terrace.Â
And before Harry could stop himself, he is already moving.
âExcuse me girl,â he mumbles disorientedly as he slips out of the small circle.Â
He places his glass to a nearby table and then grabs his own coat from the wardrobe in the hallway before making his way outside. After her.Â
The moment he steps out into the cold a short sense of realization washes over him that he definitely shouldnât be here, that he is crossing a line, but then another voice in his head tunes it out, convincing him that he is just making sure she is okay and thereâs nothing wrong with that.Â
Stopping by the door his gaze rakes through the terrace, but he doesnât see her, until she spots her slouched form sitting on the bottom of the stairs leading out to the lawn. He hears her sniffling, but she hasnât acknowledged his presence yet, if she noticed it at all. Thereâs a couple of moments of hesitation on his end, he can hear the rational side of him screaming somewhere in the back of his mind, telling him to turn around and just walk back inside, yet he still finds himself moving towards him and then that voice is silenced.Â
âEverything alright?â Harry asks from the top of the stairs, but he startles her so much that she jumps to her feet and backs away a few feet. Thatâs when he sees her tearful eyes and red nose.Â
âS-Sorry, I donâtââ
âHey, itâs all good. You didnât do anything wrong. Just checking in.â
She squints her eyes at him and thatâs when he realizes she must not even see his face since the light is coming right behind him. So he walks down the stairs and then finally his face is lit and realization settles in her eyes.Â
âOh, Professor Styles. Hi.â
âHello Y/N. Are you okay?â he asks again, to which she just chuckles bitterly.Â
He canât miss that even with tears running down her cheeks and her eyelashes stuck together, she looks so fucking beautiful it baffles him. He has to fight the urge to reach out and touch her tear-soaked cheeks.Â
âUm, yeah, everything is⌠perfect,â she scoffs, reaching into her pockets, probably looking for tissues, but finding none so Harry grabs one from his inner pocket, handing it over to her, her fingers brushing against his for the shortest second as she takes it and then itâs over, but his skin keeps tingling.Â
âThanks,â she mumbles before drying her face as much as she can. âIâm good. JustâŚâ She looks at him and changes her mind. âAh, wouldnât want to bore you with my nonsense personal drama.â
âDrama is never boring, have you learned nothing in my class?â he jokes and it actually makes her laugh.Â
âThis drama is not worthy of being taught in class though.â
âI bet some of the big names thought the same thing upon writing what we read in class these days.â
âSo youâre saying I should write about how my boyfriend is fed up with me because I told him something he did hurt me?â
âThat sounds like something I bet a lot of people would want to read about,â he smiles and when she mirrors it, he can feel his chest expanding. Somewhere way too deep in his mind an alarm goes off, but it quickly becomes one with the void and all he can think about is her. âActually I can think of a few great pieces that are about similar topics.â
âReally?â
âYeah, believe it or not, youâre not the first one to experience this.â
The way she looks at him is setting him on fire. The mixture of sadness, tiredness and gratitude towards his attempt to cheer her up is still making her glow in a way Harry has never seen before on any woman.Â
âDo you mind analyzing one for me right now?â
âIâd be happy to.â
The party is completely tuned out for the two of them. First they actually talk about a novel, but soon it turns into sharing their favorite books and authors, their guilty pleasure reads, recommendations for each other and even more personal bits Harry would never share with a student, but Y/N is the exception.Â
They have no idea how much time passes as they stand outside and Harry ignores how the cold starts to sting his fingertips even in his pockets, because he knows that if they go inside this bubble will pop and he is too selfish to let that happen just yet.Â
When thereâs a short silence Harry notices that she is probably slipping back into what happened earlier and when she looks at him again he already knows she is about to share.
âI gave him a chance and explicitly told him not to fuck me over, because I canât deal with that again. But all he has been doing is manipulating to believe that Iâm always in the wrong.â
âItâs impossible for you to always be in the wrong.â
âI know. Well, part of me knows, but then I always go back to thinking that he is right, I must have messed up something.â
âThat just proves that you have self-criticism, that you donât just think everything you do is perfect.â
She sighs and looks away, her gaze distant as she battles herself inside her head, a feeling Harry knows very well, unfortunately. It doesnât sit right with him that she is visibly struggling because of an immature guyâs untreated problems. She deserves so much more, but how can he tell that without crossing a line?
âGive it some time and youâll see it clearer. Use your critical thinking on his actions as well, not just yours and donât settle for less than your worth.â
âYou think I did that?â she asks, eyes jumping back to meet his gaze. âYou think I settled for less than my worth?â
Thereâs more behind her eyes than the words she said out loud and he is torn, because he can feel himself being pulled in more than ever, like she just opened the door the slightest and he has the chance to slip in. Itâs the first time he senses something on her part and after all the yearning he is eager to take the chance.Â
âI think you deserve a lot more, Y/N. Youâre brilliant, bright and give so much to others, you should get the same amount if not more back. If someone canât see that, then they donât deserve you.â
For a second he wishes he didnât say a thing, he regrets crossing the line and he fears her reaction, but thenâŚÂ
Then he forgets everything. Because she is kissing him.Â
It happens fast, one moment she is staring up at him with doe eyes, the next her lips are crashing against his, her hands grabbing onto the lapels of his coat. He barely recovers from the shock when she is already pulling away.
âI-Iâm so sorry, I d-didnât mean to, I justâOh my Goââ
Her stammering is quickly cut short when he kisses her, his hands holding her jaw to angle her face perfectly and while her kiss was closed, rushed and panicked, this one is different. He is quick to beg for her to open her lips so he can explore as much of her as humanly possible, he is letting all the passions loose that heâs been locking up these past months and when she returns it just as eagerly it just pushes him even further.Â
They inch back to the wall of the house and when he pins her against it a moan slips past her swollen lips, completely maddening him.Â
âFuck, Y/N,â he breathes against her lips, kissing her jawline, savoring the sweet taste of her skin thatâs supposed to be cold, but itâs actually burning. For him.Â
He keeps one hand on the side of her neck, the other one digs into her hip through her coat and she keeps pushing against him, while her hands wander under his coat, they are on his waist, back and when they move to his lower stomach, brushing against his belt, something snaps inside him.Â
But before he could completely lose his mind the backdoor opens and he quickly sobers up, pulling her farther away from the corner so they canât be seen.Â
â...and that was actually crazy,â a girl speaks up, oblivious to how Harry has Y/N pinned against the wall just a few feet away. They are both breathing heavily, but she has her face buried in his shoulder while he covers his mouth with a hand, adrenaline racing through his veins.Â
âAh shit, Iâm out of cigarettes,â another girl says.
âMm letâs get out of here then. I think Max said they are having a little party as well.â
âOkay.â
Then the door opens again and the voices disappear, but reality hits Harry hard in the head.
He slowly pulls back, enough to look at her face and when he sees her swollen lips and slightly smeared mascara he almost combusts.Â
Because he wants nothing more than to take her, right here and then everywhere else in the world, but he also realizes what he just did and this time his rational side wins.Â
âFuck,â he gasps as he jumps back, cupping a hand over his mouth.
âI wanted itââ
âY/N, stop!â he cuts her off. âFuck, this was a mistake.â
âBut I wanted it! You didnâtââ
âI said stop!â he barks and she shuts her mouth right away. âThis shouldnât have happened.â
And before she could protest again or worse, kiss him again, he is already storming back inside, across the house towards the front door.
âHarry! I havenât seen you all night!â Stella catches him, but he just wants to get as far away from this house and from Y/N as possible.
âIâm sorry, I need to go. Iâll talk to you later,â is all he manages to say before he is already out the door.

âMegumi!â You call your son in the living room, whoâs sitting next to his father, Toji, on the couch watching the news. âCould you go grab your sister and tell her to put her studying on hold? Dinnerâs almost done.âÂ
âYeah, no problem,â Megumi says as he rises to his feet, putting his headphones around his neck and pulling his phone out of his hoodie pocket. âOh, uh, Mom?âÂ
âHm?âÂ
âCan Itadori spend the night after dinner?â He then looks over at Toji with a small scowl. âAfter Dad hides all of his assassin stuff?âÂ
âHey, watch it,â Toji says.
You nod with a light smile. You loved having Yuuji Itadori over. He was a bright kid, and besides, he made Megumi relaxed and happy. âOf course. Go prepare the guest bed, yeah?âÂ
Megumi departs with a nod, then heads upstairs. From the living room, you hear Toji whistle. âWow. Baby, looks like Spider-Man stopped that bank robbery.â
You look up from the dishes in the kitchen, then hum in delight when you catch whatâs on the screen. It looked like small clips from the internet as the reporter gave details. The masked hero, wearing blue and red, swings, fights, and rescues hostages swiftly. âIncredible,â you say, then walk over to hand your husband a list of groceries. âCould you head to the store and grab these? I want to make sure that we have enough food for breakfast in the morning now that Yuuji will be staying the night.âÂ
Toji looks around to make sure that Megumi and Tsumiki arenât present, then lowers his voice to a whisper. âActually, I wanted to talk to you about Yuuji.âÂ
âMegumi has feelings for him. Yeah, I know.âÂ
âNo- Not that. Amazing for them, and I think theyâre adorable together, but,â Toji points over at the TV. âI think heâs Spider-Man.â
You blink, then burst into laughter as you head back into the kitchen. âToji, what? Donât be ridiculous. Heâs only fifteen and very busy. You know how often he studies with Megumi.âÂ
âIâm serious,â he says as he follows you. âThink about it. Do you know how often Yuuji shows up with bruises or scratches?âÂ
You begin arranging plates on the dining room table. âJust like our son, the kidâs a fighter. I mean, his uncle Sukuna was a huge fighter before he passed away. Plus, he spends a lot of time with Satoru Gojo, and we know how he is. Also, doesnât he have an older brother? Brothers fight.âÂ
âTrue, but just walk with me for a second.â You sigh and look up to see Toji waving his hands animatedly as he explained. âDo you remember when we all went to the parade on New Years together, and that giant robot appeared?âÂ
âYes, it was all everyone could talk about for days.âÂ
âUh-huh.â He then points at you. âDo you also remember how Yuuji was gone when Spider-Man appeared at the scene?âÂ
You stare at him blankly. â...Toji, he went to the bathroom before everything happened,â you remind him. âIâm certain that he got lost in the crowd when everyone started running.â
Toji groans. âYou donât believe me. Baby, Iâm telling youâHeâs Spider-Man. I canât prove it now, but I will eventually.âÂ
You sigh again and cross your arms. âOkay, so, letâs say he was. What would you do?âÂ
âWell, I meanâŚâ Toji mutters, then sheepishly rubs the back of his head as he quietly chuckles. âI dunno, give him a high-five? Worry about Megumi?âÂ
âTrust me, Toji. The only people with secret identities here are you and I.â You reach over and grab a stack of napkins. âBy the way, Megumi had a point earlier. Be more careful about where youâre leaving weapons. One of Tsumikiâs friends nearly saw one not too long ago.âÂ
He winces. âSorry.âÂ
âYouâre fine.â You push to your tip toes and gently kiss him. âNo job tonight, right? I know I donât have one.âÂ
âNope. Once I get those groceries, Iâm all free.â He grabs the list from you, then reaches towards you to lovingly push a loose strand of hair away from your face. âIâll be back soon.â When he leaves through the back door, the front doorbell rings.Â
You hear Megumi rush down the stairs. âI got it,â he tells you as he passes you. When the door opens, Yuuji Itadori waves at you with his usual grin. âHi, Mrs. Fushiguro!â
âHi, Yuuji. What happened to your face?â You ask. His lip is slightly busted, and thereâs a bruise beginning to form on his jaw. Yuuji laughs sheepishly, shoving his hands into the pockets of his yellow hoodie. âOh, uh, me and Okkotsu fought again. Gojo-sensei had to pull us apart.âÂ
Megumi rolls his eyes. âI swear, youâre always fighting.â
âAw, come on, Megumi,â Yuuji teases with a smirk as he crosses his arms. âYouâre just as bad. I heard about what happened a few days ago.â
Your sonâs cheeks dust with pink, and he clears his throat. âYeah, whatever. You need to get cleaned up before dinner. Come on, thereâs a first-aid kit in the bathroom.âÂ
Megumi goes upstairs, and Yuuji follows close behind him. Youâre about to tell Yuuji that the flap of his backpack is slightly unzipped, but the words get stuck in your throat when you catch the tiniest hint of the red and blue suit. You only see it for a split-second before Yuuji swings his backpack around, excitedly telling Megumi about a new action figure he wants to get for his birthday.
Your eyes widen. Holy shit.Â

Part 1;
The old linoleum tiles are the most peculiar shade of puce, and Joel has realized that there is someone sitting at the back of the room who smells⌠strange.Â
More brown than purpleâan ugly color. Thereâs something about it that fascinates him.
The woman that is currently speaking tells of her husband; itâs the only tale she has to tell. Sheâs been doing it for weeks, and they all know it well by now. Older, omega, the woman, and at the latter and less comely stage of life. Most of them here can say the same. They usually give their names, those that get up to shareâalthough itâs never a requirement when you attend, it is highly encouragedâthe sharing, he meansâbut he never pays much mind to themâthe names, that is. Thatâs not what heâs here for after allâto make friends. Although, he does see how thatâd be the initial assumption.Â
Joel Miller is here for something more specific.
Six weeks heâs been showing up to these things now, and heâs yet to take a turn. He tells himself heâs working up to it.Â
What that specific thing isâŚhe hasnât quite figured out. Heâs listening for it, though, and intently, even if he does skip over the names. Itâs the details of what theyâre telling that matter to him. The hows and intricate whys of what it is that brought them here today. Â
Her youth had been spent on a drunk, the woman is sayingâher husbandâand heâd been cruel to her in those days when there was still currency to spend in the form of her vitality. Joel nods at the puceâyes, he thinks, thatâs usually the way of it. But later, thereâs more to the story she reminds her audience, he drank himself into a fit, and had never been right since. The cruelty had been taken away from the marriage after that, and sheâd been put in charge.Â
âBut I wonder,â she says, âIf sometimes I donât miss it, the way heâd been,â âif the reason she was here now, with all of the rest of them that were just like her in their own unique ways, was that sheâd been left lonely after her cruel husband had been exchanged for a sick one.Â
Joel nods again and wonders what sort of face the woman wears as she confesses but doesnât bother to check. No matter, he knows theyâre the same. If not in designation, then in heart.Â
Itâs easy, that thing, he does it too, to wish for the bad. To want to hold on to it, the thing that hurts. Addictive, even, in some cases. Missing it is easy.Â
Itâs why heâs here.Â
And itâs what they promise you. In their flyers and pamphlets, when they stand on the corners of streets talking people up wearing that look in their eye and that slouch in their step, when they smell it on youâor in the lack there ofâa mate or a purpose.
Welcome to our meeting. Weâre here to find the cure for loneliness.Â
Thatâs what they promise you when you come here.Â
Itâd been that word: loneliness, actually, that had caught him. L-O-N-E-liness. There was something attractive about it to him. Not a label but a state.Â
You see, it was like this: Joel had seen a therapist once, several years ago, against his will and at the behest of another, whoâd said all the wrong things in all the wrong ways.Â
âYou sound depressed, Joel,â the therapist had told him.Â
Heâd worn horn rimmed glasses and had a shiny bald head he could see the reflection of the overhead lights in. And worseâthe non-scent of a beta which told him theyâd never understand each other in the ways Joel longed to be understood. Heâdânot hated him, necessarilyâbut felt an immense apathy for the man; more so than the regular apathy he felt for most things in his life.Â
âI donât know what that means.âÂ
âVery, very sad,â was the official diagnosis.
Joel hadnât liked the sound of the word. The label. He did not like that a word so succinct could be ascribed to him and all that had happened to him in his life. There was no word for it. It just was.Â
But there was something different about a state of aloneness, which if attributed to himself, he could accept. He had been left alone, in ways. It was a tangible thing he could look around a room inside of himself and recognize.Â
Theyâre meetings, is what this place isâencounter groups this coalition offers where lonely demi humans can come to congregate, discuss their aloneness, what had led them to such a state; their lack of attachments, connections, matesâalpha, omega. Held in the basement of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Newbury street, right between his shop and house, although they never talk about religion which he likes because he doesnât believe in religion.Â
God is still under review.Â
He wonders if the Catholics wouldnât have them.Â
Sitting forward in his seat, the metal folding chair that always leaves his back aching something fierce, he presses his elbows into his knees to distract with alternative pressure. Focusing on his fingers woven together between his spread legs, he tries to pay attention to the man whoâs stood up to speak now. Older than himself, late sixties, no children, no family, no nothinâ; heâd run them all off.Â
But Joel is distracted.Â
The smell is stronger now. Stranger too. Something full bodied, but metallic like rust, astringent bleach, built in a way that forces saliva to pool heavy between his suddenly aching gums. A mask that sits atop something of a much different chemical architectureâthatâs the strange part.Â
Orâno. The back of his neck itches, and Joel lifts a palm to cup his nape, quell the sting, feel the tender mark. No. The strange part is not the illusion of the smell. What it is, actually, is that heâs fairly certain what heâs smelling is someone else's blockers. Something which heâs positive heâs never consciously noticed on another person in the thirty plus years since heâd presented as an alpha.Â
He has, suddenly, the quite intense urge to peek over his shoulder, certain that heâll be caught smelling things he has no business smelling. That there will be someone just there, breathing down the nape of his neck with accusation on their tongueâboo!
Silly. But heâd known today would not be a good day.Â
Itâd started off wrong. The milk had gone sour overnight, the check engine light had come on in his truck, all his socks were suddenly mismatched with not a single pair to be found, and his usual route to work had been waylaid by some freak accident. A tree split in half, one side into a house, the other into the road. Not a sign of lightning in the sky all night long.Â
Perhaps he might be compelled to believe in God after all.Â
Joel does not like it when things are out of order or out of the ordinary. His life was organized in a way that never caused him strife or excess. And it was not that he was stuck in his ways, only that he enjoyed his routine and disliked when things were not as they should be. And thisâwhatever it is heâs smelling, whoeverâis not as it should be.Â
The older gentleman, an Alpha too, is still speaking. He had a daughter, has, who no longer speaks to him. Wonât even take his money. Heâd had a long career in government thatâd filled him with greed and paranoia and a radical view of life that refused to align with the way young people saw the world now. Perhaps heâd tried to change at certain times, but he was old and set in his ways. Or maybe he hadnât wanted to change as badly as he should have when he still had the chance to. Happily stuck in the past. His wife had died, and his daughter had gone away from him. Too tired of his mediocrity as a father to give him another chance.Â
The man sounds like he feels sorry for himself. Like he thinks himself the victim, and this one, Joel does look up at. He looks old and worn down, heavy beer pouch and thinning hair and sagging jowls. A sad and lonely man. Joel wonders if thatâs how he looks to the other people in this room, as well.Â
âNo man knows how bad he is until he has tried very hard to be good.â Joel blinks, looks at him more closely, tries very hard to find similarities between themselves. But noânot quite right, not the thing heâs looking for. Their plight is different. This man is not alone, heâs got his weakness to keep him company.Â
The one thing Joel had fought like hell to keep out of his repertoire of issues. Heâd run from even the possibility of it as soon as she was dead, left Texas straight for the Northeast and from thereafter, everything heâd done, heâd done with a staunchness of character. If at the end of it, that staunchness was made up of apathy or numbness or dissociative fury, well, then at least he wasnât still that man whoâd been too weak to save his daughter.Â
That counted very much in Joelâs book.Â
An overabundance of cold numbness, little anger, everything a static hazeâan abstinent winter. That was his whole life. But then, look at him now, he was here, wasnât he? Heâd taken that brochure handed to him on that last warm Tuesday weeks ago as heâd headed back to the shop from lunch.Â
Hello, sir. Could I interest you in a cure for loneliness? The young omega had said.Â
Itâd started like anythingâan experiment or a desperate ploy. The monotony had been steady going the past few years, getting older, colder. Heâd grown hard and solitary around his wound, loneliness spread like a fungus, and heâd longed for any sort of change.Â
âA cureâŚhow?â The terrible shrink had come to mind.
âOh, nothing to fret over.â The young man had a nice smile, Joel remembers. Kind and straight toothed. Honest in the way that a stranger knocking on your door to sell you a Bible seems honest. âWe call it an encounter group. People come, share, tell the tales of their designation and their lives. In the end, the result is different for different people. Some move on to a second step if they need more. Others find what theyâre looking for just through the connection of sharing. But no matter the result, youâll see, youâll be cured. Promise.â Heâd winked, smile deepening, giving him an appreciative once over at the end of his spiel. Joel had blinked back, surprised, confused, but curiosity peaked enough heâd obsessed over it for three short days before heâd found himself stepping into the molted incense smell of the belly of a church so dimly lit he was sure not even God peaked in this sad space any longer.
âItâs that easy?â Joel had asked, childlike in his throat-strangled hope.
âThat easy.â
It seemed the smile had been honest enough to sell him the Bible.Â
The scent insists upon itself as the older gentleman finishes up, and Joelâs nose tickles with whatever it is itâs whispering at him. He wants to get up and walk out, run away, but suddenly his gut is tight and hot, and he isnât sure he can actually stand up without disgracing himself in front of all these people. A wash of agonized heat moves through him, confused at whatâs suddenly happening to his body.Â
âWe have a newcomer today sharing for the first time,â Maria, the woman who leads the group, says at the front of the room. âEveryone give her a warm welcome, itâs her first day and already sheâs brave enough to jump on up here.â
Thereâs the shuffling of bodies in their seats, a cleared throat, the man sitting behind Joel breathes so loudly he thinks heâs gotta have some sort of medical condition, the puce turns more hideous by the second, and his own heart is beating so hard in his ears the rush of blood is dizzying. He feels each thump of the thing against his breast bone in some sick imitation of a fist begging to be let out.Â
The new voice begins as nothing but a murmur.Â
An introductionâhe misses the name. His breathing goes shallow, heâd tip over in his seat if he didnât have both boots planted firmly against the puce. The voice gains strength and with it, Joel wishes heâd been paying attention from the start. He didnât get to hear her name.Â
Itâs a girl.
Sheâd run away from home in the spring of her sixteenth year to join the opera, she tells them. Had come upon the city in roaring spring and thought the rest of her life would be exactly like that, pure novelty in bloom, nothing like what sheâd left behind. And was deeply disappointed when the reality was nothing such.Â
And Joel hears it, that disappointment in her voice at what sheâd not been able to find after searching for it so religiously. This is what makes him look up at her. This, unlike all the others, he thinks he can relate toâjust by the sound of her voice. The search for a thing lost which can never again be found. The fruitlessness of it all.Â
At that first vulnerable, terrified glance, sheâs already staring at him, eyes catching like hooks.Â
He blinks once, twiceâcolorâis sure he can hear the movement of his eyelashes passing through the air, the stick of his lids meetingâcolorâbright. This is it.
That wash of heat turns into a blaze, every single bead of sweat blooming on his brow is a tell evaporating into the ether. This is what heâd sensed from the start of the evening. Maybe even from the moment heâd seen that split maple.Â
âMy mother always said I needed to be stronger, bolder, not so sensitive.â She looks away from him now. âI grew up in an angry house where you had to fight tooth and nail not to be overrun. Because of this, I left it at a very young age, and it was the greatest fight I could muster, abandoning that house of anger. I found myself something to bring me what I thought would be joy, a job and a city, and for a time, it was enough. But starting your lonely life so youngâŚitâs hard.â After a pause of breath, âItâs been hard.â
âAnd itâs made me never want to have toâexert myself,â she says, searching for the right words, smiling when she finds them, and Joel has the urgency to smile back. âNow, I never want to have to be strong. I never want to have to try. I want to only be the way that I am. If thatâs weak or sensitive or whatever it might be at any given moment, I donât care. I donât want to have to fight. I never want to be in an angry house again. I want someone whoâll see this in me and understand and never make me work for it, that they would give it to me willingly, easily, without me having to ask. Do you understand?â She looks about the room, and he hopes her eyes will land on him again, and even though they donât, he feels sheâs speaking directly to him. He nods, the hook of her temptation cast beneath his chin. âThis is a fantasy. And it makes for a lonely existence. This idea of how I need it to be for it to be rightâlove.â She looks down at her hands folded atop the podium where they go to stand at the front of the group and share, and he wills her gaze to find him amidst the crowd again. âItâs so difficult. And this might seem very bad to you, weak willed, but itâs not. Itâs only very honest. Which can never be a bad way to be.â Thatâs why sheâs here, she tells them.
Finally, she looks back at him, and itâs that loneliness of two people amidst a crowd, facing one another, knowing themselves mirrored against the other and yet still disparate. Thereâs something indecent about the way she looks at him in front of all these people, the way he, in turn, looks back. A little bit like finding your own face on a stranger's body in a crowded room. Color rises to his face, and she gives him that same elusive smile from before.Â
Heâs the one to look away this time.Â
As the crowd disperses for coffee and pastries after the last of the speakers, he searches for her. He needs to ask her name, feels as if heâs some blighted creature without it, swears heâll never forgo attention during a meeting again if he can fish it out of her.
He finds her at the dessert table, Maria at her side and a hand at her shoulder. Something of a thank you is being imparted between the two women. The girl is saying sheâs grateful for the welcome, grateful that theyâd found each other.Â
Joel has things to be grateful to Maria for, too. His brother, mainly. Itâd been pure chance that Joel had met her here, that she knew Tommy also. Sheâd met his brother on a summer trek to Wyoming where theyâd become friends and had kept in touch afterwards. The woman has a thing about her that ingratiates people by sheer force of will. Perhaps itâs that sheâs an alpha, too. Perhaps itâs just the charisma and wide smile. The fact that she has a countenance that takes no shit from anyone, that makes demands of a person whether theyâve got any give or not. But whatever the case, theyâd realize their connection through Tommy, and she kept Joel updated on his brother whom heâd not spoken with in many years.Â
Watching the two women stand together and share that easy thanks that Joel so urgently owes, and yet which he cannot voice, he feels, suddenly, so angry. So awkward. So humiliatingly inexperienced. So unable to grapple with the pain of human contact, the fascination of it, the humiliating necessity.Â
That decade old anchor weighing him in place and the guilt of even thinking of it as such.Â
I feel decrepitly alone and odd, he thinks. And how strange, no? He was a normal man. He has a normal job. He lives in a normal house. Unexceptional in every sense. Everything in his life had been ordinary up until that one great tragedy. And then, as if none of the before had ever existed, it was as if everything afterwards was one great landslide of wrongness. The filth of it slinging mud all over his life so that nothing had ever been right after her.Â
So that now he cannot even approach this girl whose name he needs to know, and Maria, to whom he owes the last surviving connection to his brother.Â
As Maria turns to go, she gives him an encouraging nod, sending him into an agony of shyness. Sheâd sensed him hovering.Â
The girl remains at the dessert table, perusing the pastries. He can see her fingertips dancing over the golden, sugared confections, before she settles on a plain, glazed donut. He watches the bend of her elbow, bringing it to her mouth and thirty seconds later, the empty hand reaching for a napkin. He canât help the huff of laughter it draws from him.Â
Watching the unknown creature with her back turned, he peers down the length of himself. Wood stain marred t-shirt, old work jeans and scuffed boots, heâd come straight from the shop. Looking back at her, she seems perfectly packaged and pristine. The two of them, different as chalk and cheese. He tells himself he shouldnât do it, turn around and go, leave her alone, as he steps up beside her at the table.Â
Immediately, thereâs the heat of her skin, the smell of her shampoo, and he realizes, and itâs silly because it shouldâve been obvious from the get go, sheâs an omega. The epiphany, not that she is one, but that heâd been too stupid and oblivious to notice, leaves him feeling vulnerable and angry.Â
Any sort of hello thatâd been coming alive on his tongue immediately dies. And heâs about to make a run for it once again when she speaks up from beside him, âWould you like a donut?â Her small fingers are dancing over the pastries, searching once again. âI havenât had one yet,â she lies, âI canât decide which looks best.âÂ
The dancing hand pauses over a golden brown puff pastry, seemingly coming to a decision, when she turns to look up at him. The scent of her isnât just shampoo, not just the blockers heâd shockingly picked up on before, sharp, burning his nose. Itâs her skin now, too. The dry sweat from hustling under her coat to make it to her first meeting on time salted along her limbs. Hot, sweet almonds. The shocking vermillion of the morningâs split maple comes to mind. He can smell her.
âA puff pastry?â She presses, quizzical crook to her brow at his silence and glower. âI think you really need something sweet. Itâll make you feel better.â
He wants to agree, to say he also thinks he needs something sweet. All he can manage is a short grunt because she smellsâŚindescribable. Honeyed musk, something heady, like she herself had just got done baking, straight out of the oven and full of sugar into his waiting mouth.Â
That earlier anger, it kicks up a notch. Why isnât he fucking saying anything?Â
She shrugs, as she lifts the puff pastry to her mouth he finally manages sound.Â
âYou stink.â
He doesnât know when he became such a liar.
A pause, mouth open, straight, white teeth ready to bite into the fluffy sweet bread. He can see her small, pink tongue, and it makes him go a little woozy.
He might be losing his mind.Â
Sheâs got elegant eyebrows that shoot straight up her smooth forehead. The look of her skin is glorious. âExcuse me?â
Now, there seem to be too many words spilling out of his mouth. âYou need better meds or somethinâ. Need to sort your shit out. Canât go gallivanting about the world smellinâ like that.â Oh god, shut up.Â
âExcuse me!â She takes a huge bite of the pastry. âI do not gallivant,â she shoots back, mouth full of sugar and Joel goes hot everywhere. âWhat is wrong with you?â she demands, the pursing of a prim little mouth as she chews, eyeing him maliciously.Â
He hasnât the damndest clue.Â
She is not wary of him in the slightest, which in turn tells him he needs to be wary of her.
Another large bite, inexplicably she extends her free hand towards himâpotentially going into shock and entirely out of his depth when he takes it, the vulnerability of tendon and muscle soft beneath his strengthâoffering him a firm shake. She gives him her name.Â
In that moment, she has a look about her that tells him sheâll bite back if he isnât careful, even if she hurts herself in the process.Â
And now he knows you.Â
-
âWe might as well acquaint ourselves if youâre going to insult me. Donât you think?â Peering up at him, heâs tall, well over six feet, and broad shouldered. Older, distinguished, but in a rough way, hewn oak, gray. âAre you typically this rude? Or is this a special occasion?â
Incredibly handsome.Â
âIâm being serious.â
âI do not stink. No one has ever said that to me, and my blockers are quality. It must be a you problem.â The puff pastry really is very good. And this man really is very handsome. Coming here today was a good idea.Â
One of the girls from the theater had suggested it, handing you a pamphlet with Looking for the Cure for Loneliness? emblazoned across the top, and even though sheâd done it kindly, any other person wouldâve taken the implication as an insult. Hey girl! No offense, but we all in the company think youâre super weird and have you heard about this support group for losers? Kind of like Omegas Anonymous!
Those hadnât been her exact words, and you hadnât taken offense. After the initial agony of embarrassment, youâd warmed to the idea. Youâd heard of groups like these before. Congregations of demi humans where one could come to find community or connection. Be it socializing or support for people struggling with their designations and all that they implied, they served their purpose. And anyways, you werenât in a position to be nitpicky.Â
Itâs true, youâre alone.Â
So alone, in fact, that even the people around you could tell. Strangers, coworkers, your roommate and her girlfriend. Like some noxious cloud of loneliness following you around virtue signaling the desperate need for love and companionship and understanding youâre so in need of.Â
You increasingly saw yourself as a dancer on her toes, trembling delicately all over, vying desperately to survive to the end of the song. A monster with too many heads. A Cerberus of the richest caliber.Â
Two or three wouldâve been acceptableâheadsâbut you'd long surpassed that and moved on to something unrecognizable and unpleasant. Desperately in need of a solution.Â
âMaybe youâre the one that stinks. Maybe itâs your upper lip.â And voila, the monster makes her debut.Â
âMyââ The rude alpha, obvious, that one, lets out a choked sound, a deeper wash of color immediately flooding his cheeks. You dip your head sideways, appraising him as you polish off your second pastry. He has pretty bone structure, masculine, and after heâs done choking and spluttering, he canât help but laugh a little bit. You see it.Â
Beneath a mouth that looks forbidding, perhaps even a little cruel, you can sense that he is not an unkind man.Â
Yet youâre not so green that you canât recognize the gnawing hunger of loneliness in others. Thereâs always a reason people find themselves in places like these. His face, edged with the weariness of age, makes this obvious. He has good reason for subjecting himself to this.Â
Reaching for the lovely eclair youâd been deciding between earlier, you take a large bite of it. Almond cream and a thick layer of icing on top, humming happily as you chew while he stares at you like the three headed dog.Â
You hold the dessert out towards him, offering. Palm up, he shakes his head no, slightly disgusted look on his face.Â
âSo. You come here often?â
He blinks. âReally?â Patronizing look on his face now.Â
âWhy not? I am actually interested to know if this is worth my time.â
He rolls his eyes. Oh, heâs fun. âYes, I come here often. Every Friday, for the past two months just about.â
âAnd you like it?â
âIs this the sort of place one likes?â
âOh, come on. You never know what you might find.â He watches your mouth as you finish the eclair, swallowing hard. âAnyways, I think the world is kind of over out there. Donât you? Might as well make the best of it in here.âÂ
Thumb pressed against the edge of the table, he looks down, suddenly awash with shyness once again. A shy alpha, whoâd of thought.Â
âWhat did you used to do?â He asks, motioning at the crowded room full of chatting alphas and omegas. You wonder how many of them will go home together for a fuck after this.Â
âWhen?â You ask, sure he means in lieu of this group, if youâd ever had another form of demi human community.Â
âBefore this.â
âBefore this? Nothing.â Smiling at him, certain he isnât picking up on your teasing.Â
âNothing?â
âNope. Iâve always been here.â
âButâ Donât youâŚI thought...â Heâs cute, shaking his head like youâre just too confusing to sustain. âYou sing, right?â He pivots.Â
âSing? Me? Whatever made you think such a thing?â The sly look on your face goes completely over his head and slides to the rest of the sweets. If he wasnât watching, youâd have another.Â
âYou said. You said youâre in the opera,â he gruffs back, looking visibly aggravated now.Â
Such fun.Â
âIâm a supernumerary,â you concede as you turn, making your way to an old relic of a pew along the far wall, tragically abandoning the desserts.Â
He follows as you go, sitting a respectful distance beside you.Â
âI donât know what that is.â
âWeâre the actors that fill the stage at the opera.â
âNo singing?â
You shake your head, flirting with him. âIâm a wench, Iâm a courtesan,â You bat your lashes, fingertips pressed coquettishly beneath your chin, âPart of a harem. Iâm every woman youâve never known. It depends on the opera.â
âIâve never heard of that before.â
âI started as a stagehand when I first got to Boston. Worked my way up.â
âHowâs it work? Lines or somethinâ?â
âNo lines. No anything. Iâm a background actorâan extra, basically. If anything, Iâm given some simple choreography direction, laugh, sigh, show fear, horror, shock. Whatever. Iâm playing pretend without actually having to do anything.â
âNo working for it.â
Your smile melts to blandness. So heâd been listening, then.Â
âDid you want to sing?â
âNo. I wanted to be a supernumerary.â
âStrange. Iâve never heard of that,â he repeats.
âYou did say, yes.â Now, the smile turns auspicious. Everyoneâs here for something. âWhat do you do?â Perhaps this is it for him.Â
You eye the rest of the congregation, at the far exit, thereâs a large alpha helping an omega into his coat.Â
âGot a shop, furniture, woodworking and such.â
âYou make things?â He nods. âAh, a man of creation.âÂ
Sitting back to take him in, heâs got the beginning insinuations of silver speckling the dark hair at his temples, a well groomed beard, and large, intimidating hands.Â
His small huff of laughter is bashful, tinged with something disappointed. âNo, nothinâ that grand.â And heâs got an accent heavy at the ends of his words, not Bostonian. Southern.
âBut you know, I wanted to sayâŚâ
âYes?â You press when he loses his courage, leaning towards him, inhaling deeply.Â
âWell, that I know what you meant earlier. Sometimes I can be the angry house.â
You blink once. Sit back. âI see.âÂ
âItâs hard work. I have to try every day at it.âÂ
Hard work being the house, or not? Two opposite sides of the same coin.Â
âHow do you stop yourself?â You cast a line, fishing for his character.
âDonât know. Keep myself cold, I think.â
âThatâs no way to be.â
âNo. Itâs not.â He sounds amused. You want to bite him.
Everyoneâs here for a reason.Â
âAh, well. Perhaps thatâs whatâs brought you here then,â you say, twisting the toe of your sneaker against a scuff on the old hardwood, leaning forward on your palms wrapped around the edge of the pew.Â
âMaybe,â he says, but a sort of pained, exasperated sound follows it. Your hung head turns to peer at the handsome face, and heâs already looking at you.Â
Thereâs something animal afoot. Perhaps in terms of designation, sure, of course, like the rest of the alphas and omegas here. Your designations weigh heavily in the air. But also intrinsic to your two personalities. You feel you know him. That the two of you might have the same sorts of problems, desires. And as you stare at him, you think you may be equally measuring each otherâs character, finding that similarity in one another.Â
His eyes move quickly between yours, over your face, and you can tell that prolonged eye contact isnât his norm.
He has the most surprising set of bright hazel eyes like river stones.Â
Suddenly, you feel desperate to pull out a flicker of sexuality in the man, hear it in his voice. Sure, that with him, the experience would be entirely different, exhilarating. Perhaps a challenge. He seems to be more quiet and more patient than any other man youâd ever come across, but also more sternâtaking in that soft mouth held so firmly. Far more remote too, by the far away look in his gaze. You want to see how he could be moved and what the sight of it would look like.Â
âMaybe not,â he finally continues. âIâm looking for something, I think.âÂ
âSomething like what?â
âSomeone like me.â
âAn alpha?â
âNo,â he looks away, cringing. The word out loud seems a shock to him. âDid you listen to the woman at the startâmissing the bad thing? I struggleâŚwith that. Holding on, not letting go even when I know I should.â
Youâre at an age now which sometimes makes it hard to realize or accept that what youâre living is your life. That itâs been time to grow up. That you have to remember to move forward when itâs your turn in line.Â
Which is to say, that you understand himâthe difficulties of knowing when to hold on and when to give up.
âSometimes you hurt yourself because you donât have anything else to do. Sometimes, because the alternative is much worse.â
âHolding on âcause thereâs nothing else to do?â
âSure. Or youâre used to it.â Youâll be gentle with him, you decide. Heâs in need of gentle handling despite the stern face; not a puzzle so arbitrarily solved. And those eyes are still so bright, he doesnât seem like he needs any more hardship.
âDonât know why Iâm tellinâ you this,â he says, accent heavy.Â
âWell you did come here for a reason. Didnât you?â Discreetly, you slide closer to his side, but he doesnât notice. Apparently lost in the realization that perhaps this was what heâd come here for, to talk to someone, to have someone listen and relate. Youâre almost positive heâs never gotten up to share with the group before in all his time coming to the meetings; doesnât look like the type.
âI came here because Iâm going to take better care of myself,â you tell him. âIâm going to try harder.â
âHarder at what?â He blinks as if attempting to come out of a dream.
âEverything. I donât want to end up like my parents; drunk, angry, alone. Iâm scared of it. Iâve avoided at least two of them.â
âIâm afraid of getting older,â the dream moves in his eyes. âThat Iâll forget,â he says, but you donât ask what.
All of a sudden, he seems very real. The swells of grief and loneliness moving through him so similarly, so close to the surface.Â
Springing up, you turn to face him and he follows to stand too. You can hear the crack of his knees unfolding, and when he lifts his left palm to stifle a gruff cough, the band of gold around his finger is paralyzing.Â
All of a sudden, heâd seemed like what youâd been looking for here too. Thereâs laughter coming from the church rafters.Â
âYouâre a widower?â He wants to forget, heâd said he wants to let go.Â
Hadnât he?
But instead, âWhat? No.â You stare pointedly at the ring, and he looks down at it also. âNo,â he repeats.Â
âSoâre you looking for a fuck, or what?â You try and hold back the bite it comes with, but you canât.
âNo. No. Thatâs not what Iâm looking for.âÂ
You donât understand, impaired by your youth, you forget youâd chosen to be gentle with him. âMaybe itâs what you need,â you tell him, turning towards the exit before you can watch him cringe.
He follows at your heels, grabbing his coat from the hook by the doors before heâs stepping out after you into the fall blister. Itâs cold and wet and glorious out.Â
âDonât you have a coat?â He demands.
âNope.â You start walking towards Arlington Street and the park.Â
âDid you walk here? Itâs freezing out.â
âI did,â you turn back towards him, still moving, and he starts to follow.Â
âFrom where?â
âDowntown.â
âWhere?â He scowls at your uncooperation, the married man. Alpha. The truth was that heâd smelt strange to you too. Like no one ever had before. As glorious and shocking as the cold. Like if snow had a scent. Disappointment churns in your gut alongside the excitement at the sight of him stalking after you.Â
âI donât think you know it.â Your backward walk is interrupted as a hurrying stranger bumps into you, sending you staggering. Watch it, the Boston snark spits. The alpha turns to scowl, heavy boot forward like heâs half a mind to follow after the person youâve just inadvertently assaulted.Â
And it occurs to you, âYou didnât tell me your name.â How silly of you. Youâd been so distracted youâd forgotten to ask, and what if you never see him again after this? What if you canât muster the courage to come back again next week? What if he canât?
âItâs Joel.âÂ
You think it sounds right.Â
âI mightâknow it.â Where youâre headed to. You smile at the dog with a bone. The disappointment pulses. âIs it far?â He presses. You shrug, looking over your shoulder. Youâre going to lose yourself in the garden for a few hours, forget about him. âWhy donât you drive?â
âI like to walk,â you tell him, turning back.Â
He looks at you like he doesnât like the things you say much less the way you say them much less the way youâre grinning at him. Perhaps he can see the disappointment and is disturbed by the sight of it, but the possibility seems too altruistic.Â
âYou should try it sometime, Joel. You might like it too.â
His huge body seems to be shivering in the cold.Â
âI thinkâŚâ The look on his face has turned suspicious now. He takes a step towards you. âYouâre very strange. And youâre very young. I donât think we should be friends.â
Your heart gives a demanding thump. âWeâre not going to be friends.â When youâd first spotted him in the crowd, the strangest feeling had come over you. A tug behind your belly button, a scalding heat at the back of your neck, at your wrists. Perhaps itâs merely imagination, the look of disappointment you think you see on his face right before you turn away from him to continue on walking. âAnd Iâm not that young anymore.â
Youâd known today was going to be a good day. Extra cinnamon in your latte, a late start to your morning, warm in bed, no rain in the sky despite the cloud cover. And your director, late for rehearsals after some freak accident had befallen the roof of his house.
âThatâs what all young people say.â

Pairing: Max Verstappen x teacher!reader Summary: When your student gets injured and you canât get hold of her parents you try call an old contact number hoping he can help. Warnings: slight angst, fluff WC: 3.4K
Max frowned at the unfamiliar number calling him. If it wasnât for the fact it was a local number he would have ignored it but since few people had his personal number he decided to answer it. Immediately he was hit with the sound of high pitch cries and a soothing voice softly singing a lullaby that eased the knot of anxiety that had formed in an instant.Â
âHello, is this Max?â you asked when you realised the dual tone had stopped and the call had been answered. You shifted the child carefully on your lap and grabbed the old enrolment form to see the name again. âMax Verstappen?â
âMaxy?â the girl in your arms echoed with confusion.
âYes, who is this?â
âMiss Y/L/N, Iâm one of Penelopeâs teachers. Thereâs been an incident and I found your number under her emergency contact list.â
âOh no, sorry, there must be a mistake. You should call her mother or father. Iâm not, weâre not, um, I shouldnât be on that list anymore.â
You cringed as another piercing cry deafened your ear and you rubbed the little girl's back. âIt hurts,â she whimpered.
âI know, sweetheart, someone will be here to get you shortly,â you replied softly and you hoped it was the truth. âLook, Max, Iâve tried every other contact number and no one is answering. Is there any way you could come down here? At least until I can get in touch with someone else.â
Max pinched the bridge of his nose but when he heard Pâs shuddering cry he knew he had to go. âOkay, Iâll be there shortly.â
Max didnât care if he got a parking ticket, he took the loading space right outside the preschool building. He likely would have gotten a speeding ticket too in his rush to cross the city but thankfully there werenât any police in his path.Â
âMaxy!âÂ
Penelope wriggled in your arms as she spotted the stranger walking into the classroom. His eyes immediately found her and he crossed the space to where you sat holding her.
âHey, P,â he greeted with a smile and knelt down at your height. âWhatâs happened, bug?â
Her little eyes welled up again as she lifted her bandaged wrist. âI fell off the playground.â
âI donât think anything is broken but I would suggest having her doctor check to be sure.â
âI donât know who her doctor is. I donât even know what Iâm doing here.â
âYouâre contact details were-â
âThose must have been from when she started. Her mother and I havenât been together for a while.â
âOh, I see. Iâm sorry to put this on you. I swear I tried every other phone number we have.â
Max nodded and his sigh sounded exhausted as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. âI just need to make a call. Iâll be back in a minute, bug.â
Max walked along the room, looking over the childrenâs artwork as he pressed his phone to his ear and waited. Eventually the call went to voicemail and his spine straightened tensely. Kel, Iâve picked up P from daycare and Iâm taking her to the hospital. Call me when you get this.â
You could see the man was stressed when he returned and his short hair pointed in all directions from the hand he kept nervously running through it. It was cute.
âDaniil is in Italy this week for work,â Max said as he returned to your side and picked up Penelopeâs Prada backpack before opening his arms. âIâll keep trying to get a hold of Kelly. Come on, bug.â
Lunchtime was coming to an end and children were starting to file back into the room, a few of the older ones stopping at staring wide eyed at Max. He was tall but not that tall or formidable to draw such a reaction but your question was answered when one of the boys ran to his picture on the wall. TimothĂŠe unpinned the drawing of a race car and ran up to Max, holding it out with a pencil.
âSir, can you please sign this?â
Max looked used to the attention and took the pen with a polite, âSure.â He stared at the picture for the moment after signing it and chuckled. âIs the RB20?â
TimothĂŠe nodded eagerly. âItâs my favourite.â
âMine too,â he said as handed the picture back and smiled as it was crushed happily to the boy's chest. Max then carefully picked up Penelope, slowly so she wasnât jostled, and his arms brushed yours.Â
âIf you need anything you have my number,â you reminded as the weight was lifted from your lap. âChildren can be a little overwhelming if youâre not used to it.â
Max smiled fondly at Penelope and shook his head. âThis isnât new. I still have her room set up.â
âYou do?â Penelope asked hopefully and Max turned his head as he cursed to himself. âAre we going to live with you again?â
âNo, no, sorry, P,â he said softly. âI just havenât had time to redecorate.â
âOh.â You both winced at the defeated tone and you knew the fresh tears had nothing to do with her arm this time but you were saved by the bell as it spurred Max to toss the bag over his shoulder and look to the door.
âI hope you feel better soon, Penelope.â
âThank you, Miss Y/L/N.â
âThank you,â Max echoed with a nod before departing.
All afternoon you were distracted with thoughts of the two of them until the final bell rang and you grabbed your phone. You had sporadically tried to contact Daniil and Kelly again but the calls went straight to voicemail every time and you found no returned calls.
Y/N: How is Penelope? Max: She is happy watching The Little Mermaid. She has a sprained wrist and the nurse complemented the bandaging so you should be proud. Y/N: And how are you? Max: Iâm fine.
Max swore as the pot of water boiled over and he hissed as he grabbed the handle to find it was just as hot. He dropped his phone reaching for the teatowel and then P started calling out from the living room complaining that the movie was boring - the same movie she watched a thousand times and she had specifically asked for.
Y/N: My mentor used to tell me that stood for: freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional. Are you sure you are fine?
After turning the stove down to a simmer and wiping up the mess of water that had splashed across his floor he went and changed the movie to what would hopefully last longer than ten minutes before she changed her mind. Taking another attempt at making dinner, he grabbed a bag of pasta from his pantry and poured its entirety into the pot.
Max: Iâm thinking I am definitely neurotic and possibly starting to freak out. Y/N: I couldnât have that on my conscience. My offer still stands if you need some help. Max: You donât have anyone you need to get home to? Y/N: My cat prefers his own company unless heâs hungry and heâs already been fed today so no. Max: I donât want you to go out of your way. Y/N: I wouldnât have offered if I wasnât willing to follow through. Let me help. Please?
Max smiled at his phone before sending his address and looking around to see how tidy the place was. His jacket was tossed on the table instead of being hung up and Penelopeâs bag was spilled across the entryway floor, not the first impression he wanted to make.
You entered the port address into your phone and locked the classroom behind you, feeling a little unsteady at the thought of seeing Max again. Penelope was a sweet child and she seemed comfortable with Max but you hadnât really ever heard her talk about him before. You told yourself the only reason you were going there was to check on your student's wellbeing, but a small part of you wanted to see Max again.
You wondered if maybe he hadnât heard your knock on the door or that you had the wrong apartment and you rapped your knuckles on it again before he called out. There was a crash and then a groan close to the door before it swung open and Max balanced on one leg.
âUh, is everything okay?â you asked as he clutched his foot.
âYeah, everythingâs fine,â he rushed before he caught the teasing curl of your brow and he froze before a smile grew on his lips. âRight, freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional.â
âYouâre a quick learner.â You stepped inside at his invitation and he closed the door behind you while you rushed towards the burning smell in the kitchen. âOh, wow.â
âFucksake,â Max grumbled as he grabbed a wet tea towel before reaching for the tray of garlic bread in the oven. âOuch, shit!â
âYou said a naughty word,â Penelope called out from the next room like it was something that she regularly commented on. âThat's another 20.â
Max sighed heavily as he looked at a jar on the bench that was already filled with cash. âShit.â
âI heard that.â
âShouldnât you be watching your movie?â
You giggled at the amusing conversation before turning the tap to cold and taking Maxâs hand. âWet towels and hot trays make steam.â
He watched you guide his hand under the water and flinched as it hit the burn mark on his palm. âI donât usually cook, if you couldnât tell.â
âThe life of a bachelor. Keep your hand there.â You moved with ease around his kitchen trying to save what was left of dinner but paused at a huge pot of pasta that had swelled up and pushed the lid half off. âAre you expecting a dozen other people?â
Max shrugged innocently. âI didnât know how much to put in.â
âWell the good news is the top half is edible,â you stated after finding a colander and draining the pasta until only a thick layer remained stuck to the bottom of the pot. âDo you have any sauce?â
âSauce?â
âWhat were you going to have with it?â
âGarlic bread.â You both looked at the charred sticks still smoking on the baking tray.
âDo you mind?â you asked as you pointed to his fridge and the cupboards around the kitchen.
âNo, please. Go ahead.â
You checked the fridge first and you were pleasantly surprised to find it well stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables. âDo you live off salads or does all this go to waste?â
âNeither, my nutritionist comes by twice a week and he prepares the meals.â
For a moment you had forgotten his profession. You had googled his name after TimothĂŠe couldnât stop talking about meeting the âMax Verstappenâ. âThat must be intense, and restricting. Does your social life suffer?â
âItâs not so bad. I still get to go out for dinner and have a few drinks when I want.â He started to pull his hand out from under the water but you tutted and caught his wrist, holding it back beneath the cold stream.
âKeep still,â you warned with a voice you saved for children who werenât listening. âIt needs 20 minutes under there.â
âYou want me to stand here for twenty minutes?â
âNo, science wants you to stay there for twenty minutes.â
âAre you a teacher or a nurse?â he asked with a playful roll of his eyes.
âDepends if it's halloween.â
His loud laugh made you smile and you eased your grip on his hand one finger at a time to see if he would stay where he was. He did. âIâll behave, Miss Y/L/N.â
âYou can call me Y//N.â
âI kind of like calling you Miss Y/L/N.â
You checked to see if he was serious but thankfully there was a teasing smile on his face before you returned to the fridge to gather some ingredients.
By some small miracle dinner canât have been too bad since everyone cleaned their plates of the pasta, though you thought they were likely being polite since you could still taste the hint of smoke from the bottom of the pan. Penelope had spent most of the meal asking Max if he remembered what they used to do when she lived there, how they used to go travelling and shopping. You got to see first hand how much patience the man had as he answered each question despite how it made him uncomfortable.
âYou miss her,â you commented after she had gone back to the tv. Max started to collect the dishes with you and sighed as he placed them in the sink.Â
âIt was a big change when they moved out,â he spoke quietly and you stepped closer so you could hear better. âShe kept asking if she did something wrong.â
âThat must have been hard for you.â His eyes widened and you wondered what shocked him, but you had a feeling it was the fact someone showed concern for him. Even though you didnât know the details of the break up, it was clear he had and still did care for Penelope and you felt sorry for him. âCan I hug you? Iâm a hugger and I feel like you could really do with one.â
âYou want to hug me?â
You tried to shrug it off casually. âIf you want to. I donât want to make you uncomfortable. Everyone needs a hug sometime.â
âI do,â he said quickly, very quickly, before he cleared his throat. âI mean, I-I wouldnât mind a hug.â
You smiled at his tentativeness and stepped into his personal space, slipping your hands into the narrow openings between his limp arms and his body to curl around his waist. It took a moment for him to respond before his own arms embraced the comfort and curled around your back too.
âYou smell really good, Max,â you complimented as you rested your head on his chest and caught the scent of his cologne.
âThank you,â he chuckled, the amusement relaxing him even more until his entire body curved into yours. âI think you have playdough in your hair.â
You hummed in agreement. âHighly likely. You wouldnât believe the places I find that stuff at the end of the day, glitter too.â
His bold laugh made you smile and you didnât care it was at your own expense, you were just happy to know it was because of you. Unfortunately you didnât have the chance to hear it again as his phone rang from the countertop and you saw Kellyâs name light up the screen.
âI should let you get that,â you said as you stepped back, instantly missing the warmth and his scent. âIâll go keep Penelope company.â
Max waited for you to leave the kitchen before he accepted the call, his calm state evaporating in an instant. âWhat the hell, Kelly? Where have you been?â
âMy phone was on flight mode, I was on a plane. Is P okay?â
âHer wrist is sprained but sheâs alright now.â Max pinched the bridge of his nose and reminded himself to breathe. âWhy would you leave her alone?â
âShe wasnât alone. Maria was meant to pick her up after school and I should have been home in time for dinner but my flight was delayed.â
âWho is Maria?â
âHer nanny.â
Max had to suppress the groan at the news. He knew Daniil hated the idea of a nanny and he had offered to have more custody so that P would be raised by her parents and not a stranger, but Kelly had vetoed that idea.
âDo you want to go out for dinner? I owe you.â
âNo, weâve already eaten.â
âSome other time then.â
Max made a non-committal sound, his eyes darting to the living room where he watched Penelope explain the movie to you. You were so attentive and patient, asking questions that had Penelope thinking deeper and using such a simple interaction as a learning opportunity. He could see why you suited being a teacher.
âMaybe,â he lied, âjust let me know when youâre almost here and Iâll bring P out to you, I donât want to confuse her any more.â
âRight, of course,â Kelly sighed. âIâll see you soon, Max.â
Max made the most of the time he had left with P, abandoning the dishes so he could sit on the other side of her and watch the movie about a chef rat. She had cozied into his side with a yawn and nudged his arm until he eventually draped it over her shoulder. It was completely innocent but you couldnât help noticing the heat of his hand touching your arm, the warmth spreading like wildfire.
The fire was doused when his phone vibrated and the moment to leave had come.
While he grabbed Penelopeâs backpack, you grabbed your handbag and prepared your own goodbyes. It was silly to feel sad the evening had come to an end but you knew that you would likely never see Max again. You werenât famous and he didnât have children, your paths werenât meant to cross.
âHave a good weekend, Penelope,â you said as you knelt down and gave her a hug. âIâll see you bright and early on Monday.â
âBye, Miss Y/L/N.â
You rose to your feet wondering where you stood with Max until he opened his arms. âAnytime you need a hug, you have my number,â you offered as you stepped into his embrace, no matter how unlikely that prospect was.
âOr if Iâm feeling fine?â
You giggled and nodded against his chest. âEspecially if youâre feeling fine.â
The walk to the elevator was slow, as if no one wanted the strange evening to end, but there was no stopping time as it began making its way down from the penthouse to the ground floor. The doors opened and you instantly spotted Kelly in the reception area, her elegant and effortless beauty reminding you that you still had playdough in your hair.
With one last look at the man beside you, you gave him a small smile and stepped away. âGoodbye, Max.â
He didnât respond as you headed to the valet area but he pulled his phone out of his pocket and yours vibrated a moment later.
Max: Are you okay?
Y/N: Iâm fine.
Max: Me too. Emotional, you?
Y/N: Insecure.
Max: Want a hug?
You stopped and turned to see Max hand Penelopeâs bag over before struggling to separate the girl from where she clung to his leg. She didnât know, couldnât see how it was hurting Max, but you could. So you waited, and when the mother and daughter had departed you stepped into the elevator with the subdued man, slipping your hand into his.
The elevator rose quickly and you watched Maxâs throat bounce with the deep swallow he made before he choked out a broken, âFuck.â
âI feel like I should remind you about the swear jar,â you teased as you bumped your shoulder gently against his arm. âBut Iâll let you off this once because I have a soft spot for you.â
He looked down at you from the corner of his eye and you saw some of the sadness fading from them. âDoes that make me the teacher's pet?â
You gasped dramatically and clutched your chest with your free hand. âI could never bestow such high praise after just one day.â
âWhat are your plans tomorrow then?â he asked with a smirk as the doors opened and he pulled his house key out of his pocket.
âI donât have any.â
âLovely, now are you going to answer my question?â He stepped inside the apartment and opened his arms. âDid you want a hug?â
Your smile chased away more of the shadows in his eyes and the last of it was erased when you stepped into his arms with an eager nod. âI will never say no to a hug.â
His chest bounced with a laugh and you felt him rest his cheek on your head with a contented sigh. âThat is very good to know.â

Itâs been clear that the Tanizakis arenât siblings from the very beginning
hereâs some evidence now that itâs been confirmed canonâŚ
everyone whoâs read irl Tanizakiâs book knew that Junichiro & Naomi werenât siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
BUT just because the Tanizakis arenât siblings doesnât mean you canât feel uncomfortable about them. if you feel uncomfortable, GOOD. thatâs exactly what they want
the Tanizakis, Moriâ they all use these disturbing ruses to disarm or distract people in order to protect themselves, or to accomplish their goals. this is a writing device that asagiri commonly employs as a way to parallel the irl literature (itâs actually ingenious)
there are 4 main indicators that have always made it clear to me that Junichiro & Naomi are not siblings:
1. most obviouslyâ their character designs. Harukawa is extremely intentional with character designs, & she very intentionally made Naomi & Junichiro look nothing alike
their eye shapes are purposely different
their color palettes are contrasting
even their differing styles of clothing have meaning
this was all done so that the audience could PLAINLY see that theyâre not relatedâ so that WE know that theyâre lying when they say they ARE related
2. how the people around them respond to their act.
the general reaction is âdonât question itââ which is exactly what they want. âbe distracted by how uncomfortable you feel so that you look away from what weâre hidingâ (this is likely a protective measure)
3. most importantly, this is meant to parallel irl Tanizakiâs book âNaomi,â where the main character Joji picks up Naomi to raise her into his ideal woman, but since she's so young (& a minor) they call each other cousins (Joji makes no sexual advances on young Naomi btw)
however, his plan backfires because when Naomi gets older & they get married, she flips the script on him & manipulates HIM so that he's under her thumb (which is why bsd Tanizaki is at a domineering Naomi's mercy). Joji let her have her way because of his masochistic tendencies
4. lastly is the emphasis that Asagiri and the Tanizakis themselves put on calling each other siblings.
over & over, itâs âmy brother thisâ & âmy sister thatâ
like theyâre desperately trying to convince us that itâs true (âdonât let your lying eyes deceive youâ)
here are just a few of many examples from the light novelsâŚ
again, if youâve read âNaomiâ you knew that Junichiro & Naomi werenât siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
just like if youâve read irl Moriâs works, itâs clear that bsd Mori isnât a pedophile
just like if youâve read No Longer Human you know that Dazaiâs an unreliable narrator. he makes you think heâs a bad person bc he believes heâs a bad person, but those around him see him differently (btw this doesnât mean heâs never done anything âbad,â though bsd isnât about moralityâ but thatâs another discussion)
anyway, iâm so excited for the Tanizakis backstory to be revealed so that we can better understand why they use this defense!!
also let this be a reminder to READ THE LITERATURE if youâre able to!! even reading synopses & analyses of the coordinating books makes bsd make much more sense đĽš
reminder that this how youâre supposed to react while reading bsd:
also, if youâre interested in a post explaining how Mori isnât a pedo, i wrote this analysis on twt. OR you can read this document that one of my moots sent me (remember: analyzing a character does NOT mean you condone any actions they may or may not commit!)
#i hope this makes sense. iâve had this in the drafts for months but was too scared to post it#iâm hoping now that itâs confirmed canon there wonât be as much backlash ^^â pls be kind#darcy this is for you⌠i hope you like it :â)#also full disclosure i havenât been able to read all of Naomi yet. mostly synopses & analyses. so donât take my summary of the book as law#also hopefully now people wonât ignore the Tanizakis anymore!! not only are they so interesting. theyâre also just fun characters#Naomi is so underrated & intelligent. i need more of her teaming up with Dazai#rambling about bsd again#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd meta#bsd analysis#bsd tanizaki#bsd naomi#naomi tanizaki#tanizaki junichirou#tanizaki siblings#bsd 118

Updated scam alert
So, as some of you guys know, I've received an ask from a known scammer a few weeks ago. Since I found their main post reblogged by 300 or so people, thinking they were helping a palestinian diabetic lady, I made a pinned post (this one) and warned everyone.
At some point this week, that account has been banned (or deleted), to my great dismay (the best vaccine against this kind of thing is letting victims know, since these scammers will just make new accounts); however, I found out that one of the names used in one of the many of his PayPal accounts has also been used in (as of today, 11/23) gladysconnoisseurpost thanks to this other post!
I already added that new piece of info in my old pinned (the one linked above in pink), and just today I received this ask on anon - worded very similarly to this other one that I got (off anon!) immediately after I called him out the first time.
So, in short: it's clear it's the same person again, there are sources to prove my point in the first link, there's one more here (el-shab-hussein saying it's a scam), thus I'm resuming my little hobby here.
IF YOU'VE BEEN MENTIONED IN THE REPLIES HERE:
-read the post in the first link. I'm basically doing the same thing, just with another post since it's about a different account and it could cause confusion
-I'd like you all to either delete your reblog of this scammer's post or edit it to include a warning to your followers
-if you're having a hard time tracking your reblog down (some date back to August), let me know and I'll help
-some of you reblogged it more than once, try to get them all (I tried to take note of those who did, if you have any doubts let me know)
-I did recognize some of your names from the last time - I'm sure you're all more knowledgeable now, it's just that it's the same scammer that contacted you multiple times, and I found an older instance. It's unlikely you falled for it once more after I warned you, so no worries. Still! Keeping up your reblog with no warning helps making it look more legitimate, so if you would kindly do me a favour and delete/edit this one too đ
-usual disclaimer that I transcribed all urls manually and I may have gotten something wrong. Hmu if you think I made a mistake, so I can contact the right person (or prove that it was in fact you)
-and again, no worries. You're all doing a good thing, you're not at fault for this piece of shit taking advantage of your good heart. Just be more wary next time :*
-I'm still gonna check for name changes, both on Tumblr and Paypal. Most recent on top
Oh, and let's not forget my List of Actually Verified Palestinian Fundraisers Who Contacted Me. Gotta uplift their voices too
