Thank yooouu!!!! I am pretty pleased with that framing for them ever since it occured to me when I was writing out that protective/possessive Jayce post! It really clicked using that description as the summation of the VIBE I got from them even in Season1. That vibe where it's undeniable that Jayce is more physically forward and LOOKS like he's taking charge in those moments where he puts a hand out to hold Viktor back and it LOOKS at first like Viktor just goes along with things.

But there is just. That vibe. That sense. Something about noticing how much Jayce can act assertive but very much wants someone else directing him as Season1 goes. Something about how he's always moving around Viktor. And part of it clicks when you see him putting his head in Mel's lap repeatedly like every single giant dog that does not realize they are not lap size. Then somethinnggg about "man every time he's doing that or even talking to Mel he ends up talking about Viktor huh"

And THEN the something...something about Viktor. About his mix of quiet introversion but the very self assured confidence he carries himself with. The way if something frustrates him he looks over at Jayce like "do something about that." The way that as soon as they partner up it's like he becomes this quiet pivot point holding lots of eye contact while pushing Jayce to do crimes and then being the force of calm confidence as the pressure mounted trying to stabilize the hexgem for the first time. Something about how he always takes Jayce's constant touches and physical looming like it's perfectly natural and you don't know why, but it doesn't feel like Jayce is imposing on him???

And then (for me at least lmao) that exchange on the bridge makes it all CLICK. Jayce got so wound up he ended up snapping at Viktor (bc he is a high energy dog and his response to stress/fear is baring teeth lmao) and Viktor does not even look up as he smacks Jayce's hand away. Does not GLANCE at Jayce as he very pointedly moves away from him and out of Jayce's personal space bubble. And Jayce's hand flinches where it's held out and he immediately says "I'm sorry" in the smallest voice. And THEN, only THEN does Viktor allow the hand on his back to lead him away and you realize. holy shit. Jayce has earned touching privileges back. Holy shit.

and MAN I am usually NOT AT ALL into the idea of D/s dynamics as a lifestyle thing but with those maniacs it's like. Oh you two never even discussed that this is the dynamic. Y'all are just LIKE THAT. If Viktor ever called Jayce "good boy" even as a joke you just KNOW Jayce would DROP to his knees like it's an instinct (making for a hilariously awkward day at the lab)

Arcane - Jayvik

Jayce had to stop his head from lulling back when Viktor suddenly dragged his hand slowly down his chest.

Reaching away from Viktors cheek, he snatches his hand away. Viktor simply raises his gaze back to Jayce’s, tilting his head slightly in contemplation. A strain of frustration and panic bloom under Jayce’s ribs. Why won’t he answer his questions? Why is he suddenly touching him? Why can’t his heart stop racing?

As Viktor continues to study him with a concerning amount of curiosity, Jayce scans him over. Sitting between his legs, Viktor is laid out for him to see. One leg more bony than the other. The beginning of a slight dip at his hips near the lining of his shorts. Another beauty mark between his ribs on the left side of his chest. Collar bones almost more striking than his cheeks. His lips. Thin and pink and parted as he inhales slow breaths between them. What Jayce would give to breathe his air. To share a breath between them.

as much as i love to think of the possibility of jayvik almost kissing in their final scene in the cosmic chaos of the anomaly, its truly obvious that they shouldn't. i really was scared (in the best way) that it was going to happen. the closeness, the tenderness, the meaning of it all- it all leads up to the beautiful connection that they share and the ultimate love that jayce declares. however, i remember that this is happening all too fast for jayce. it was recently that he was telling mel that he was confused about a lot of things (referring to their shared moments x his love for viktor), and that he hasn't had a single moment to process the manipulative political system he was shoved into suddenly after being declared the 'man of progress' for simply being a scientist, before anything. he is a smart man, his sole role has been discovery, tired nights of it with his theories and his partner viktor. when jayce lost viktor and hence lost himself in the apocalyptic world, he had time to truly face every difficult situation he has been in, thats why he comes out of the arcane a completely different man- not just because of seeing the destruction and annihilation of life, but because of the realization of many wrongdoings he just fell victim for and in turn enabled. this being said, one of them was mel. NOT TO SAY HE WAS COERCED OR MANIPULATED FOR SEX! but he did fall victim to the adoration that mel was giving him after he performed well as a counselor, he of course was baring so much weight, he needed the praise and affirmation that he was doing well. he played the part, he wanted to, because he (like anyone in politics) will want something/someone to show them that they have earned their place. it was that kiss that came out of harmless appreciation that mel and jayce exchanged that he melted in and yearned for.

so, when jayce confesses to viktor, he already knew his place, did not need any more proof, and did not need a hand to guide him to the right choice. he made his decision the moment he came back from the arcane, and it is that he will do everything in his partner's name and honor. in their final moments he gives viktor the rune, fights to stick with him, pulls him close, hand on his neck and head pressed against his, there is nothing more to prove, there is no rush for affirmation, he has done what he aimed to do after all-

choose viktor.

(and i think their kiss would be more shy and careful way later in the afterlife after they both talk about everything from start to finish but that would be me just writing a fic at this point)

more modern au headcanons for @now-thats-an-oof

Jayce and Viktor's favorite guilty pleasure is all the crime/science shows like CSI, Bones, X-Files. Stuff that requires a healthy amount of disbelief because it's more entertaining that way, rather than the shows that pretend to know science or are obnoxious about science. They used to have a drinking game, but after one episode of CSI Vegas they were so decidedly intoxicated + the hangover was enough for them to never play it again.

Also, their TV set is a projector against their wall. They also pirate everything, use VPNs. Neither of them pay for any subscriptions, all mooch off of Caitlyn's accounts when they can't find something they want or the quality being pirated isn't good. (Mel and Elora locked them out of their account)

They live in a studio apartment on the first floor right outside their University. It's nice, low-priced and they don't spend a lot of time in it anyways with school and lab work. Jayce's favorite feature is the fireplace, Viktor's is the spacious shower.

They do not use candles: sets off Viktor’s asthma. Instead they have a modified (by them!) diffuser with scents like eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender that helps with breathing + won’t set off an attack. (He still does his treatments, though! Just wants a nice smelling home.)

Ximena lives about forty minutes away; they visit her every weekend. When Jayce and Viktor first got together, Viktor was afraid to meet her (he has no family for Jayce to meet, and never got far enough in other relationships to meet parents) but she took him in instantly.

Now, Ximena insists Viktor come home with Jayce every time. Sometimes she even calls Viktor even when Jayce isn't there. She sends meals (as all moms do!) with them to take, but with the recipe card so they can make it together.

Adding onto that, Jayce cooks, Viktor bakes. Both have used Ximena's recipe cards often, but hers are just better (Jayce thinks she's hiding a secret ingredient, Viktor thinks she's magic) (one of them is right!)

Neither of them are big readers for fun, but both enjoy scientific journals, reports, short stories, as long as they aren't science fiction. Unlike with the TV shows, the bad science just annoys them. For fiction, Jayce enjoys adventure/suspense, Viktor enjoys mystery/suspense. Neither like horror, or romance-only, but enjoy a good slow burn mixed with their preferred genres.

Their greatest achievement was the modern version of whatever the distinguished innovators competition was-they both got to ride in a plane (1st class, paid for by the school!) to present their prototype for a water & air solar powered purifier to the country's top mechanics board. Mel (political science major, business minor (in Masters programs) also helped them register the patents and trademarks for it.

Speaking of Mel, other majors/minors include: Caitlyn (Legal Studies Major, Criminal Justice minor, undergrad) Sky (Environmental Science, Masters) Vi (Exercise Science major, undergrad) Elora (Business Analytics, Masters). Ekko and Powder are taking a gap year.

Jayvik have major beef with the barista at the coffeeshop closest to their apartment. Don't ask them why. (He hit on Vik in front of Jayce while also being ableist. Both of them cursed him out in their respective first languages).

Jayce and Viktor paint and sketch to unwind. Jayce sketches (likes charcoal pencils) Viktor paints (likes watercolors). Favorite subjects? Each other. (yes, they have painted and sketched each other naked.)

Failed hobbies of theirs include: crocheting (Jayce was slightly more successful, though the scarf he made for Vik was a little too long) Photography (somehow Viktor's fingertips make it into his shots, Jayce can never get the focus right) Dance (Jayce stepped on everyone's feet, Viktor only likes to sway and stand on Jayce's feet) Plants (?) (They are only allowed plants that can survive nuclear explosions now. Sky banned anything harder than a spider plant to care for from their home.)

Favorite Bar: The Last Drop (you know I had to do it). They (as well as their small group of friends) are the only academy students yet to be kicked out. Mostly for good behavior, but also because favoritism.

Things they don't fight about: Health, safety, opinions (they share most of the same ones anyways) family, friends.

Things they "fight" about: the right amount of sugar in a coffee, if Viktor needs wool socks, if Jayce needs to replace his work boots, the best kind of cookie (the great double-chocolate chip vs m&m cookie war)

The thing they actually fought about (serious version): Viktor accepting help/Jayce learning the right way to help him that wasn't diminishing Viktor's abilities. They fought for a week-still sharing a bed and eating together, working, but all silent. Finally when they came to an agreement-Viktor would stop ignoring the need for help until it was too painful to ask, Jayce would help by knowing the real signs, or doing just what Viktor asks him to help with, rather than what he assumes Viktor needs.

i had such a tough time designing jayce but im pretty happy with how they both came out. they get little butterfly wings to wear because its cute and their butterfly motif makes me ill and like thats basically the cat equivalent of wedding rings right. matching accessories. might as well be married.
