I first shipped Chaggie like most chaggily shippers. And uhhhh, when Emily showed up I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the potential poly. Gawsh... tbh I can barely choose. But like I do prefer some choices and potential stuff over the other sometimes.

Like for Chaggie I love that we have an already established relationship that is healthy but not perfect to make it more interesting. Like they have their own problems they need to focus on and I love that they can do that together. The angst? The fluff? A wlw relationship not toxic, sexualized, nor is one super masculine and the other super feminine where it's rlly jst a str8 ship(no offense to those ships I jst like when they both still show atleast a bit femininity imo), and it's the main ship??? Helll fckjnn yess that shit is everything to me and so much more. I barely get that and I cherish it sooo much when it exists in media. In my blog it is FILLED with chaggie content and an AU I made specifically jst to indulge in them even more.

Then Emily is added to the mix... THE POTENTIAL IS SOO CRAZYY I LOVE THE THREE OF THEM. And I'm a sucker for polyamorous ships. If yall know sashannarcy, that was my first ever time I shipped more than 2 people before. And then poly dokis(DDLC). From then on I can't function without one poly relationship to fawn over 😭

Another thing about Chaggily, is that it has so much more interesting things to go through than Chaggie alone has. Two people from hell dating an angel? Imagine the angst. And if anyone from heaven, especially Sera, were to find out that Emily was dating people from hell, what would happen? It's probably a touchy subject to be dating two people at all, but demons? Almost no one would accept that and she could well be casted off to hell.

But I do think Chaggily is so so SO much more interesting than Charlie and Vaggie, it's technically a pre-established relationship and would stand out from other ships in the show due to it being polyamorous. So then likely more people would be interested in it and maybe even become other people's favorite. But right now? We don't have much to go off of except headcanons and fan-made work.

I'm sorry, but what kind of accent does Ivan have? He's the only sim who speaks that way and now that he's more in focus, I can't help but wonder where he comes from! Also, while I'm at it, I've also noticed that you stay loyal to the Sim world ("speaking in Tartosan" "a Tartosan goddess", etc), and while it's obvious that Tartosa was based on Italy and Spain, do you imagine your characters being from real countries and with distinct cultural backgrounds?

hmmm idk that he really has an accent as such, it's more that he speaks more loosely/common than every one else. i don't really have voice claims or any real countries to pin these pixels to cos they're sims u kno, it'd probs get messy if i started tying things to irl and not others.. so nah, other than rough stuff like vaguely japanese for mt. komo or italy for tartosa i don't pin em to real places ig you could use my northern english accent as an example tho, like my mom is pretty well spoken but still northern right? so she pronounces her t's n shit but my accent is way more common and i drop all mine to a ridiculous extent (if i was to write butter or water the way i'd say it it's practically unreadable lol.. like bu'uer? bUHer?? idk lmao) so Ivan probs speaks like me tbh.. Hi! This might be a bit of a weird ask (and a rambly one - sorry!) but you're one of the most level-headed and rational fandom members I know and I might need you to slap some sense into me, so to speak, especially considering you've been vocally critical of Marisha's choices for Laudna before. Now I loved the episode and the inner-party conflict in this episode. It was so fun and investing and tbh I've never been as interested in Laudna as a character as during last episode (she just doesn't work for me on several levels) and I do think Marisha did a stellar job RP wise. But something grated against my nerves about how she said OOC that Laudna hasn't lied. Because Laudna has lied. By omission, deflection or otherwise. It cannot all be attributed to Delilah being the pushing force of that. And I feel weird about Marisha (afaik) not acknowledging that. If she said "Laudna feels like she hasn't lied" it would probably be different but the "I still maintain: Laudna hasn't lied. It wasn't Laudna." at the end of the episode after Laura calls Laudna out for the direct lie about the harness feels kinda trying-to-have-my-cake-and-eat-it-too in this regard. I know that Marisha can make decisions that I don't gel with and make characters that can get under my skin in specific ways (and I enjoy that about her!) but idk maybe I have difficulties putting my trust in her with this because I didn't like a lot of her choices for Laudna so far. Anyway. Maybe I just need to hear from you that I'm being stupid about this and that Marisha is going to handle this in a differentiated way. (also highly unrelated but to end on a more positive note I'm excited for you to catch up on fhjy!)

Hey anon! Thank you for all the kind words, and good news! On CR Cooldown Marisha does clarify she means this as "Laudna is not lying because, whether or not it is correct, this is what she believes". I'm going to talk more below, but hopefully that helps.

For what it's worth, I tend to not put a huge amount of emphasis on things the cast says OOC as compared to what's happening in game, for a number of reasons, and advise others do the same. I think it's really easy for those statements to become outdated or outright contradict the text (remember when people kept bringing up Laura on like, one of the first 4SD episodes saying Imogen tries not to read people's minds and it's like. ok but in canon, she does this ALL the time so this is a useless argument?), the cast is working off more information than we are slash might deliberately be hiding info from each other, and also anything said right after they break is often a really emotional statement that they, as Marisha did here, will immediately either clarify or recant after a few minutes to, well, cool down.

The lies of omission thing is also incredibly rich as a source of conflict here, particularly between Imogen and Laudna, which, as someone who's been very frustrated with a lack of conflict on that front, is very exciting. What happens when you have someone who, in classic warlock fashion, hews to the law of lying (I didn't say anything literally false!) and not the spirit (lying by omission that Delilah was the cause) and who also makes promises she's unable to keep; and she's in a relationship with someone who is exceptionally sensitive to lies by omission, lying in general, and kind of has trouble with people simply not revealing their true intentions? I think Laudna is so suggestible that she's a liability, and the party just found out, and that's the dangerous thing - if she were malicious and lying maybe they could pick it up and this would have an easy fix, but she really does believe it will be different this time and Delilah isn't misleading her for power (Delilah is 100% misleading her for power), and that makes it much more complicated. It's very juicy.

we can start w the archon i guess [I'm assuming the red haired lady is the archon by using context clues] uh ive seen people argue that its fine/makes sense that she's white since the assumption that's been made is that she's based on himeko from hi3 but uh like, himeko murata is japanese, she's not white, if the name didn't make that obvious [this is similarly why i don't like the argument that nahida being white is fine due to her being based on theresa hi3, theresa is a clone of a white german woman im not sure why mhy based the archon of a nation based on swana cultures on her but i digress] i think its at least good that she beat the conquistador allegations, left a bad taste in my mouth when that was being speculated

The confirmation of names means people have been honing in on the cultures natlan is taking inspiration from, ive seen a lot. i made my best guess when talking with a friend but i believe theres polynesian, west african, indigenous american [mexico and central america? specifically based on the name citlali] [[feel free to correct me on anything]] honestly wasn't expecting much based on sumeru

Tbh i have like zero energy to hate on the natlan debut cast cuz i already did it w a friend but I'll do it anyways, its a lifestyle

the argument of, why look for dark skin rep in a game made by a company who's colorist [either by choice or due to pressure from the government since genshin has incredibly insane cultural impact in China], is legit since its like me looking for clothes at the soup store and getting upset

But genuinely even if mhy had a vision with genshin and wanted to show a diverse world in its game, its kinda weak to be almost so blatantly colorist outside their playable characters. I don't think that making npcs dark skinned and playable characters light skinned is a good look, especially when it's the second time that that the human enemies of the region for the most part are darker skinned than the characters used to fight them

And i don't like how parts of the community jumps on people who critique genshin for this. Like, if its a non issue to you why get upset with people yk. Plus never speaking up on stuff is bad like fine, the multi billion dollar company won't listen to you, but id like to think that other people would learn from this to some degree and understand why people get upset. And idk maybe its overstepping and silly but id like to thing that outrage reaches people who can see that yea maybe there's people who Will listen to the stories you wanna tell but idk

I just don't like that people are making it okay to just be racist and colorist like, that's just gonna eventually bounce back and then great everyones seeing how mad ur getting over someone wanting a character w a skin tone darker than #FFFFFF, i cant vocalize my thoughts right tho but you get me ig

aeugh anyways on the characters specifically, the darkest skinned character in the trailer looks almost gray thats not great, and then the girls w darker skin tones [there's so few men in genshin lately] are dressed very much not at all which is a reoccurrence, sumeru dressed its darker skinned characters in not a lot clothing which like if you've ever been to a country that's hot and sunny, people don't dress in swimwear they dress in pants and sleeved shirts because hi sun damage exists and too much exposure is unhealthy and people tend to get used to the climate

Also a lot of animal themed characters this time, do correct me if I'm wrong but i kinda see an overuse in the women of color in genshin being animal themed but if im looking too much into it then uh idk maybe genshin should release a catboy

The modern theming in the outfits isn't egregious but i think too much streetwear might bog down the overall look, like latin america cultures just by themselves have amazing fashion and god id kill to see something like a dancer based on mexico's traditional dances since those are the prettiest dresses, like modernizing is fine [i believe i saw somewhere that chongyun's outfit is based on chinese streetwear and i think it fits great in with the more traditional outfits in liyue] but stuff like the hoodies around the waist and the weird half shorts half pants of one of the characters kinda weakens the overall vision [but I'm not well versed in fashion so I'm not sure what direction wouldve been best for natlan to take to both respect the fashion of the cultures inspo is taken from and also fit in with genshins vibes overall]

Natlan the region itself is the best thing of the trailer tbh, it's very nice looking and yea there isn't a yellow orange filter over it like this were american tv or something, and the music is great i think the one part of the team who does good is the music

Personal expectations, i just hope the characters are good, like i hope good personality saves these guys and my soul while i play the natlan quest getting flashbanged everywhere i look

There is something so beautiful in Maya accepting leaving the station to be with her wife and kid, but the way they showed it and the episode they decided to do show that growth? Absolutely trash. Mind you, Maya is the only queer woman at the station and she was not at the celebration and didn't say a single thing about it.

I'm just realizing that Maya and Carina didn't say a word to each other, like damn that's a choice. So, should we be happy we got a 15-second montage without dialogue?

They are so lucky that Danielle and Stefania have so much chemistry, they actually like each other and their characters, so they make the most of what they have. Like, that little kiss was probably improvised.

This is gonna be a bit (or a lot...) of a yapfest but with TPOT 13 coming out, it made me reflect on all the contestants in TPOT. And since I have the never-ending urge to spread my opinions at any and all opportunities, I made a tier list!

I would like to add that this is mostly focused on how they're portrayed in TPOT and also, will have some spoilers for TPOT 13! So be carefulll ooooo.... (read that like its a ghost)

i don't get it - I don't mind Yellow Face or TV, I just expected them to leave a lot earlier. It feels weird to look at the rest of the cast and see all these characters that I like, and also these two who are also here. They just don't do much for me. Clearly they do for someone though, so I'm happy for that little club of lucky ducks. And I'm sorry for calling you lucky ducks, I don't know why I said that.

no strong feelings either way - Self explanatory, no? I do like some of the dynamics they bring. Puffball and GB getting along by just messing shit up for everyone else was fun and uh... Grassy and SB is cool too? I'm sorry!! I just don't got much to say here.

Like, but... - I would describe these characters as the equivalent of an instant ramen. Like yeah, you would eat it, and you do think it tastes good! But given the choice, you probably wouldn't choose instant ramen as your lunch over a sandwich or something. Basically I'm saying I wanna munch on Eraser.

I will note that I really liked Lighting and BH's interactions, same with Pen and Needle and Eraser + TD! No matter on my opinion on the character by themself, I think TPOT does a good job of creating fun character dynamics and interactions, even if I don't feel too attached to those two characters!

the silly tier - This is the only tier actually ordered, based on how much I like them :] Basically just the subset of contestants that can be called "the silly", "goofballs", and "ehjyesgsuuieh"... and also Pie! I like them all for the same reasons: I look at them and go "hehe! look at that silly little guy go! wow!", or in the case of Pillow: "hehe! she's so demented in the head! wow!". I like these buffoons... but I also wouldn't mind if they left.

Now you may wonder: "Hey, why is Bottle not here???" And that's because she's in the Top 5 tier. Silly. I'm hoping you wondered that because otherwise I look real stupid right now.

I really like having TB and GB separate, it really freshens up their characters a bit and I like how it's been written so far! I'm really excited for the arc between GB and Donut (even if I wish Barf Bag was still on the team...). Pin and Ice Cube are also getting their dues, we love to see it!

the goobers - Most of the characters here are really because either 1. I love the dynamic they have with other characters: Fanny works so well with Death P.A.C.T, it makes me go a little insane thinking about it, like her impact!!!

...or 2. because I like the character arc: Robot Flower and Basketball are so very very imporatnt and dear to my heart... Robot Flower getting that surprisingly well done fight scene to her FINALLY getting fixed and the fact that Basketball risked it all just for R.Flower to be safe like auhfeihefhf sorry

It honestly surprised me Clock ranked so high, but when I thought about, it made sense. I like Winner as much as I do because of Clock and how they both matured. I think the winnerclock arc was my favorite one so far tbh!

I think the main reason Gaty's so high for me has a lot to do with her dynamic with two. We love an unlicensed therapist, go girl!! and also she's just great. like just look at her.

I know Winner would hate me because if I saw them I would be acting like Clock EP1 going like "HI WINNER!! OMG WINNER HI!!!" They're just so cool!! I already loved their personality but I got even more endeared to them after the whole Clock debacle.

Clock taking his fear of being forgotten and projecting it on Winner which just ends up breaking Winner's boundaries and making them feel uncomfortable. Winner feeling like they're being idolized when all they wanted was a real friend like they had with Loser... like I could yap on and on but this post is long enough. Just. Them.

Although I don't remember the full context with Book, I really like her! I think she bounces off the rest of the cast really well and I love that she's getting more attention in recent episodes (especially with Pencil joining back). The dream episode is my favorite for a lot of reasons, and she's definitely a big one.

Crazy how two of my favorites both have a relationship which was fractured due to one of them overstepping a boundary. Dunno what that says about me!

Bottle and Price Tag are both here simply because I think they are silly and they always make me go ':]'. Bottle was so cute in TPOT 13 for NO reason what is wrong with her

omg tysm for this incredibly kind message!!!! it literally made my entire day. tbh i didn't expect much of a response to that ficlet bc it was such a struggle to write - Aegnor and Angrod are not characters I think about often and Alqualondë is so odd narratively to me bc it feels like it should be a major turning point for everyone but it kind of...isn't? So this was my best attempt at making it make sense in my own mind. I need to write a full meta post on the subject soon haha to put my thoughts in order. I'm so glad you liked it!! Though I don't really write about them much, Olwë and Finarfin are such interesting characters to me so I'm glad they came through properly.

And thank u so so much!! i have absolutely adored writing towers, it's so much fun to explore the character dynamics and really dive into leithian and make everyone's choices make more sense in my own brain. in my mind finrod's death is really what sealed the doom of nirnaeth, cuz politically fingon lost so much with finrod. so i am really looking forward to exploring the ramifications of his survival and how the events of tol-in-gaurhoth affected him. i really see his role in leithian as him finally snapping and being like I'm going to help this person I love no matter the cost. I've always headcanoned that a big part of the reason he went to middle earth was to support both the nolofinwions and his own people who loved feanor. and in middle-earth he's had to make the hard pragmatic choice so many times, between splitting from turgon pretty much forever, letting his brothers go to the front lines, sending balan's people to the front lines, constantly smoothing things over between the Fëanorions, the nolofinwions, the doriathrim, the bëorians, and the laiquendi, and at the point of leithian he's just seen so much of that work burst into flames around him and he basically pulls a fingolfin. he's like fuck what happens to me, fuck what happens to my kingdom: thingol is insane, two of my brothers are dead, pretty much all of balan's people that i worked so hard to help are dead except this one guy who is determined to go on a suicide mission. so im gonna help balan's descendant and no one can stop me.

But now he's survived and he's going to have to reckon with...all of that...with fingon who just lost his father to a similar impulse, and with orodreth, and with himself. and of course sauron's mind games didn't help him any. so he's in a pretty bad headspace right now and is going to have to deal with a lot of the losses he's just been shoving away and not looking at up until now.

Arafinwë glances at Eärwen in bewilderment, wondering if wardrobe-related madness is a symptom among the Returned that he has forgotten about. She looks just as confused as he feels, if significantly more amused.

"Good morning, Finrod!" he says aloud. "Er - is there a special occasion?"

Finrod moves carefully to his chair, then sweeps his massive skirts behind him, swiftly moves the chair out, and sinks into it with a whoosh. He looks up cheerfully.

"Ah - that is indeed interesting," Arafinwë responds, wondering who among his mother's people he will have to take aside later for a quick word on not telling Finrod about Vanyar fads. "Surely it is not intended to go out in...?"

"Oh, but of course it is!" Finrod says. "I plan to go out to market as soon as we are done breakfasting, to experience the full effect. Would you like to come? It could be quite interesting."

"Alas, your mother and I must hold court soon after breakfast, and cannot join," Arafinwë says without much regret.

"You must tell us about the experience, though!" Eärwen chimes in, sounding as if she is suppressing laughter.

"Ah, very well," Finrod says cheerfully; and after he has breakfasted he does indeed rise carefully - barely snatching his garment away from the remnants of jelly on his plate before it can be stained - and swim out of the room.

Eärwen and Arafinwë look at each other and burst into laughter.

"The skirts!" Eärwen gasps, "The folds! It will take him an hour to exit the palace!"

"Oh dear," Arafinwë says at last, wiping his eyes. "Oh dear. Was he like this before?"

"He was!" Eärwen exclaims. "Do you remember, he used to creep into your father's closet and try on his best robes? Then he would swan about the halls, trying not to trip."

"I had forgotten," Arafinwë admits, a smile curving his lips, "but you are quite right. He always did love beautiful clothing. I only hope that his pursuit of high Vanyarin fashion will not send him home with a broken collarbone."

"It is so good to have our son home," Eärwen says abruptly. "Our children gave me such joy. I had nearly forgotten."

Arafinwë reaches across the table to take her hand. "It is," he agrees. The image of Finrod leaving the room, having to angle his hips to fit through the door and bundling his hair about himself so as not to trip, floats across his mind and he chuckles again. "Do you remember when bustles were all the rage, and Artanis got caught on a turn of the stairway? She was furious."

Eärwen's laughter is a welcome peal, more light of heart than he had heard in years. "As I recall, it was Finrod who convinced her of their merits in the first place."

"She did not take his advice on fashion again, after that!" Arafinwë agrees. He cannot stop smiling as he begins to gather up the breakfast things and neaten his own robes. It feels as if his heart is singing within him: Our son is home. He is home. He is home!

Do you think mat is gonna quit GTlive soon? I hadn’t considered it but I saw one of your posts saying he was trying to ease out of it and he DID say he would stay until the end of summer.

Who do you think will take his spot? I can’t see ash taking it since she’s good at her job as a producer and co-host. I just hope they pick one consistent (hopefully familiar) face to do it instead of swapping all the time, I like the routine tbh

Hey I get it, I'm with you on the pending doom feeling. Honestly, while I don't think he's leaving super soon, I do think he'll be gone by the end of this year. I'm basing it on stuff him and Steph said on the first GTLive after the big Goodbye Internet post.

Matt and Steph said that GTLive would "continue as a channel, absolutely" and Matt "would be on it, for the foreseeable future". But he acknowledges that he will eventually leave, noting that there will come a time when him and the team feel collectively that "this is the right time". He promised to give advance notice to when that will happen.

All of this is said in "What's NEXT for Theorist and GT Live...|Goodbye Internet Meme Review" (Time stamp: 26:00).

Matt also said Ash will continue to be on GT Live and will serve as the channel's "continuity". They did not define what that means. Its not a promise they will be the host, but its also not denying it. Steph says "there's a lot that goes into planning a transition" but "you don't pull that trigger and you don't make that choice until you know its safe and it's the right choice to make. You don't put new hosts for new channels in a position where they're not ready".

I don't think Steph meant it to sound like they don't trust Ash or think they aren't the right host. I think they're trying to say whoever is the planned host (or hosts) aren't ready yet. That could mean Ash, or that could mean Tom or Lee as they're busy getting used to their hosting responsibilities on the main channels.

So that's all the facts we have. If you want my speculation, I know Tom makes the most sense to take over because he has previous live streaming experience and he did a TON of co-hosting leading up to the Game Theory host change. I've been working on the Game Theory wiki in my spare time, and Tom was on GT Live 30 times between 2022 to when he took over. That's crazy when you put it into a spreadsheet and look at the raw data! But I actually don't think that's what they'll do.

I know you said you didn't like the idea of the host constantly switching, but I do think they want to do that (with Ash as the continuity point running every episode) because it would help grow an audience for Amy and Santi, who have significantly lower views than Lee and Tom. I'm sure that's not a surprise to Team Theorist as those channels were always more "MatPat" heavy, but financially speaking, it makes sense to put Santi and Amy on more channels to hype them up. Cast based Youtube channels are all the rage right now; look at what Watcher and Try Guys did in increasing the number of people on camera. We're probably entering a time in Youtube History where big channels are no longer based on just one personality (a la Markiplier or even Mr. Beast). Its too fiscally risky and causes a lot of burnout.

Ultimately that's why I think Vid Con is the sea change moment for GT Live. I think they will introduce the four as hosts for the GT Live at Vid Con stream, and then continue to test them as a multi host option. I predict Matt will leave by the end of 2024 (end of summer seems kinda crazy at this point since we're in June already. We also know that Matt is always late :D). The fourth quarter (christmas time) is the biggest cash generator for Youtubers so they will probably do something like "Matpat is leaving forever!" to max their views/cash inflow.

That is a very very long answer but I hope it's one that makes sense. I figured a Theorist fan would appreciate a rational answer with real life data points.

i could back it? she'd definitely be able to pull off like. oot or twilight princess zelda (by looks alone i haven't seen her act) really depends on what they're doing story wise. but ultimately i don't particularly care what the actor looks like as long as they are believably link or zelda to me and i just. don't think the kind of "major hollywood actors" that people toss around when talking about it could really have that effect because they're too recognisable? if that makes any sense. also a bit of a tangent but i don't know if i WANT the zelda movie to adapt an existing game or a new one, though if i had ti guess it'll adapt something connected to botw/totk and that timeline if it is in any way tied to a game because nintendo is generally trying to move away from the 'traditional' zeldas so to speak

moving to the zeldas. florence pugh are you KIDDING me. again i respect her i think ms pugh is very talented. but i don't think i'd want her to play zelda. ultimately it comes down to the fact that link and zelda are almost always teenagers and i want the movie to lean into that. especially because AGAIN this won't happen but i would like an examination of the impact of being declared Saviour Of The Entire World at approximately 12-17 years old. though i guess this could also work with an adult link and zelda but that would lean towards more of a drama than a Big Action Fantasy which is what this will be. zendaya again can we be serious i don't think this would work. personally i'd go w/ kathryn newton or stephanie hsu on this list tbh. or hunter schafer i think she'd be a pretty good choice on vibes alone but ive never seen her in anything (euphoria?)

More voice claims, and more characters this time around

I was gonna try to do all my Olivia characters I have so far, but a handful of them were proving difficult to figure out, so I decided to go with what I already had. If I can figure out the rest, I'll have a part two for this one.

(sorry if some are a lot shorter than the others, I have more to say about some of them than the rest... just know I stand by my choices for the most part lol)

Olivia Wolfgang - Tara Strong (Unikitty - UniKitty!): This was another one that in my mind was "specific yet vague" (still don't know if that phrase makes sense but), but I kind of figured it out? The thing with Olivia's voice is that I don't want it to be too annoying, but it still has to be the right amount of childish/excited. A lot of possible voices were either too high or babyish, or not childish enough. Since one of my biggest inspirations for her as a character was Spongebob (who is voiced by Tom Kenny), I supposed that a voice done by someone like Tara Strong could probably work, and I've found that her voice for Unikitty is the best example so far. However, one thing I need to mention is that I do imagine Olivia having a slight lisp. (Another one of her biggest inspirations is Larry the Cucumber from Veggie Tales, who has a lisp-- and if I were to direct someone voice-acting for Olivia, I'd probably tell them "like Larry the Cucumber but more girly," lol.)

Kevin Hyenadae - Dana Carvey (Garth Algar - Wayne's World): Garth has always been the voice I imagine for Kevin, again since Garth was a big inspiration for him. A very specific, awkward kind of voice. He sounds exactly like this tbh.

Dusty Carol - Tara Strong (Raven - Teen Titans): Another instance where I've always heard an OC this way (though I don't think Raven is much of an inspiration for Dusty's character beyond "both of these characters are goth-girls with purple in their colour-schemes."). A good balance of uninterested-goth who can still show positive emotions (there are plenty of examples of "goth-girl" voices that are way too monotone for my liking, at least in reference to my character.) Also don't get distracted by the fact that the examples I've used for both Olivia and Dusty are the same voice actress (Tara Strong), these are merely examples, rather than, "this is exactly the people I would cast if this was a cartoon with full voice-acting." It is kind of funny that they're the same actress here, though.

Audrey Hyenadae - Fryda Wolff (Penny Crygor - Warioware: Get It Together!): She should sound confident, maybe TOO confident. Very determined, too, and a little rough perhaps? But still young (she's 12c LOL.) I also considered Pepper Anne's voice for her, but I thought it sounded a little too old.

Parfait Brulee - Toni Barry (Snork Maiden - Moomin): Parfait's voice should be very light and delicate, kind of feminine and very nice. Not much else to say!

Laramie Lemon ("Lemon") - Melissa Altro (Pippi Longstocking - Pippi Longstocking (1998)): I'll be honest, I had a lot of trouble finding Lemon's voice claim. I knew she should sound real friendly, with an air of confidence. A real go-getter! But eventually I thought Pippi Longstocking's voice fit well enough. (Don't be surprised if one day I come back and change this one LMAO)

Tami Kachiyama - Michaela Dietz (Amethyst - Steven Universe): Kind of rough sounding, kind of rude but not too much. I think I've always imagined her sounding like Amethyst.

Ellie Gibson - Olivia Olson (Marceline - Adventure Time): She should sound really cool, and pretty chill. She knows what she's doing! Another one where I've always imagined her with this specific voice! I did consider Wendy's voice from Gravity Falls, but I found that it wasn't chill enough. (btw I could've included a snippet for singing, since Ellie is a musician who sings, but I decided I wanted more attention for a regular talking voice. You can look up any Marceline song from Adventure Time if you want an example.)

Conner Oakley - Rickie Sorensen (Arthur - The Sword In The Stone): Another one that was harder to figure out. But, I knew he should sound a little friendly and very kind, maybe a little awkward. There were a couple of voices I considered, but found they were a little too loud, or rough, etc. But I thought Arthur from Sword In The Stone was a pretty good fit! The only thing is that he should have a southern accent, too... But it's surprisingly difficult to find voices with American-Southern accents that aren't girls, rude-sounding, or fully-grown men lol. (I'll also tell you it was a bit hard to compile the voice lines for this one because Arthur has like three different voice actors in that movie lol, but I think I found lines from just the one va.)

Sally O'Dylan-Gaterson - Jo Firestone (Annie Fantasy - Teenage Euthanasia): Nerdy, nice, shy-sounding, with a bit of a lisp (though I don't have a preference on the severity of said lisp.) I also considered Gretchen from Disney's Recess, but she sounded too smart/sophisticated? Sally is nerdy, but not that much academically speaking.

Danny Squiggles - Arin Hanson (Max - Game Grumps' Sam & Max playthrough): Ok uhhhh this one's kind of funny. The idea for his voice was originally inspired by Jon Lovitz's Tommy Flanagan character from SNL (I know very niche lol), especially since he was partially inspired by that character. But, I thought that, while it would be EXTREMELY funny, I thought Danny should sound less like a fully-grown adult. Surprisingly, when I was casually watching Game Grumps' let's-play of Sam & Max, I found that the voice Arin did for Max let's play would fit pretty well. I also considered Meowth's voice, but he just sounds too much like a cat, yknow?

Margot Nodarobutte - Stephanie Anne Mills (Lindsay - Total Drama Island): Margot should sound like a girly-teenager. Kind of air-headed, too. But not too much? And not like a valley-girl. I thought Lindsay's voice fit those parameters well.

Chloe Lovebird - Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Crystal Flowers Snagrash - Psychonauts): Somehow it was hard to figure out Chloe's voice, but I got it eventually lol. She's gotta have a high voice, and she should sound pretty annoying. I mean, her annoyance-factor should rival Olivia's, lol. Very excitable. She's a parrot after all, lol.

Debbie Xander - Brittney Karbowski (Black Star - Soul Eater): Debbie is LOUD and ABRASIVE. She tends to yell. Very in-your-face, but not exactly mean. Also, I think she might sound a bit androgynous? Idk how many people would consider this particular voice androgynous-sounding, but eh.

Cammie Kharma - Lara Jill Miller (Libby Stein-Torres - The Ghost And Molly McGee): Cammie was another hard one, though I thought she should sound kind of nerdy and a bit upbeat. Also a slightly nasally voice would probably fit, what with her little horn-nose 'n all, lol. My first idea for the voice was actually Juniper Lee, but looking up the voice actress I found this role she did in The Ghost and Molly Mcgee, and thought the attitude of Libby's voice was a better fit.

Edward Tennyson - Todd Haberkorn (Death The Kid - Soul Eater): Ed's got that anime-type voice yknow. He takes everything too seriously and is pretty sophisticated. My first consideration for his voice was actually Haku from Spirited Away, but I thought that sounded TOO serious (though a very deadpan kind of voice could be pretty funny if executed right.) So I remembered Death the Kid from Soul Eater and thought that could work pretty well, though I might want him to sound a tiny-bit less goofy.

Liz Lawrence - Brigette Lundy-Paine (Billie Logan - Bill & Ted Face The Music): This was another hard voice to find, though I still had a good idea of what I wanted her to sound like. I wanted to find a Pauly Shore kind of voice, yknow? (I guess you'd call it a "stoner-type-of-voice" but that seems wrong to say about a 14-year-old LOL) Though most of those kinds of voices you find are boys. Some voices I found were just really chill, TOO chill and cool in fact. While thinking of Bill & Ted I remembered Face The Music and the fact that their kids in that movie were basically copies of them lol, and I thought Billie was a very good fit.

Vic Kilgore - Nathan Sharp (Damien LaVey - Monster Prom): Ok so my idea for Vic's voice was just, "like Nathan Explosion but a kid." Rough, and like... metal, I guess. But he's still an annoying kid. Thought Damien LaVey fit, although I think Vic wouldn't be so loud. (as a bonus, when Vic grows up he sounds more like Nathan Explosion lol)

joker: disappearing into the crowd. once he puts on his glasses/activates his ability in some other way he's overlooked, security cameras don't pick up on him, you can't see him unless he wants you to

ryuji: i'd say super speed makes most sense tbh?? not quicksilver-like, rather only when he chooses to activate it, and it leaves him fairly exhausted afterwards

ann: ngl i have 0 ideas for her 😭 just pyrokinesis honestly. i'm sorry ann i let you down 😔

yusuke: replicating anything he's seen in art. he can already kind of do that in canon tbh but i'm talking down to the tiniest details without needing to get a good look first

makoto: seeing the unfolding of certain choices. leaning into her strategist role and her more careful approach to things, she can see glimpses into the future before making a choice and see how things turn out whether she does one thing or the other. it's very powerful and paralyzing so i think there'll be some drawbacks, like only seeing a few seconds ahead for example

futaba: either smth like katai has aka screen manipulation (i have literally described katai as adult male futaba like 2 days ago lol) or the ability to learn things very quickly? maybe touching a book and immediately being able to know everything in it? and somehow with practice she managed to transfer it to the internet as well. it only works for raw knowledge and not like, languages and such, and she can't learn actual skills without actually doing them, more like having the right reading material in her head

haru: there's a lot of directions you can go with her and tbh the one i'm feeling the most is plant manipulation. she can't grow ones that aren't already there but she can use existing plants in her area however she wants. bc why not. it'd be cool

goro: making people go berserk lmao. no but really i feel like he'd have smth with like. masks. like he can change the way he's perceived by others. it's also kind of a flip on joker's "don't perceive me" i think, leaning into them being foils. maybe the berserk thing can be kind of like chuuya's arahabaki, but with loki. like this deity takes over him and through it he can make people lose their marbles somehow, after being experimented on (it's already kind of a common fan theory that loki is the result of goro being experimented on, and while i don't like it in p5's context, it works nicely here imo) (also i have a soft spot for this bc one of my ocs is literally that. aka was experimented on and now she can make people go insane with one touch. so i'm biased)

sumi: stealing other people's abilities ofc 👀 she maintains an ability up until she steals a different one. at first it's triggered through strong emotions and she doesn't even know she can do it or that she did it with kasumi, but she can later learn to control it and willingly steal abilities after perceiving them in action.

only basing it off of the stage musicals because i’ve only watched the first season of nmt once and don’t remember it super well, and i haven’t finished season 2 yet. so i only cast for the tgwdlm and bf roles.

paul matthews / wiggly: henry shields

he could definitely do paul (michael from lasers and quasars comes to mind?) and i think he could be a good wiggly. the only character i can’t really see him as is gary goldstein, but tbh i really can’t imagine anyone except for jon matteson as gary so it’s fine.

emma perkins / linda monroe: bryony corrigan

emma made me think of tech danielle from now museum, but not quite as nice. also made me think of belise from lasers and quasars, which works well with shields as paul. i think she’d be good at playing snarkier characters, even if we don’t see her playing them often. also i think she should play more villains and id love to see her as linda.

ted / wilbur cross: matt cavendish

gonna be honest, i cast him for ted, not for wilbur. i think he'd be an extremely funny ted, and i think he'd also be great at some of the minor roles. however i really can't see him as wilbur. i'm sure he could do it! i just can't visualise it myself, mainly because he was only in 4 mmni's. i would love to see what he'd be like playing a villain though.

charlotte / sherman young: charlie russell

opposite to matt, i cast her for sherman, not for charlotte. i think she could do charlotte, i just don’t see it as well. however, i think she’d be a hysterical sherman and she’d be great at the minor roles.

bill / frank pricely: harry kershaw

initially, like matt and charlie, i only cast him for one part (which was frank). i think he’d be hilarious as frank, “our doors are open” would be iconic, and the interactions with lex would be great. HOWEVER, even though i initially only cast him in this part for frank, i can really see him as bill, unlike the previous two (who i struggled to visualise). i know he’s often recognised for being chaotic and forgetful during mmni, but he’s genuinely a moving performer when it comes down to it, and i really think he could make me really sad during “not your seed” and really shine during those more serious parts. he’s obviously also really funny, and could nail the comedic moments. so while it wasn’t originally bill that got him the role, i think he was absolutely the best choice for the character anyway.

professor hidgens / ethan green: joshua elliott

you may think i chose him for hidgens, but it was actually ethan who made me think of him. like i said with grunt, he can play genuinely sweet and more down-to-earth characters really well, and i think he’d get ethan’s vibes right. and then obviously he’d be fabulous as hidgens, that’s just a given. and i know i said i wasn’t casting based on singing vocals, but it’s a nice added bonus that his voice would be really good for “show stoppin’ number”.

alice / zoey: rhyanna alexander-davis

i think she has the range to do the quiet sweet alice, the more sinister infected!alice, and also the bitchiness of zoey. i can really imagine "i'm on vocal rest :)" (what?) "I SAID I'M ON VOCAL RE—" *silence*.

sam / general mcnamara: dave hearn

i feel like this is fairly understandable? like i feel like i don't need to explain this one?

tom houston: henry lewis

he has dad energy. i'm sorry but it's true. he could just nail this whole thing. i'd love to see him do more serious/emotional parts.

lex foster: ellie morris

i really struggled with this part, but i think i'd really love to see ellie in this kind of role! i think she could nail the tough exterior combined with the tenderness and fearfulness underneath. i think she'd make me cry in "black friday" (the song).

becky barnes: lauren shearing

i think she'd be amazing as this character. she's played couples with hen before (lasers and quasars, hints of it in ashopolypse, i feel like there's another i'm missing but i can't remember?) so she'd mesh well with him. she could rock the kind-heartedness, and the occasional awkwardness, and i also think the more serious moments (like when she's talking about her ex-husband in the cinema) would be great too.

hannah foster / tim houston: nancy zamit

idk i just think she can play little kids well. hannah's kinda like alice from the lodge but not quite as creepy.

president goodman: greg tannahill

i can really imagine him doing both the strength of "monsters and men" but also the low-key patheticness when he's confronting wiggly.

xander lee: niall ransome

idk. i can imagine him dramatically taking off his glasses.

I was a classic girly girl as a kid so I wasn't watching any of the animated shows. I got into superheroes after watching the 2012 Avengers movie (which I still refused to watch for years) and I finally like really liked superheroes but it was a very fake, dabbling interest, and then my brother started sending me screenshots of injustice panels and now I don't shut up.��

I also primarily am a DC girlie, most Marvel I've read is either for specific Characters (Black widow, mostly) or because my eighth grade teacher lent me the comics. 

It's so annoying to have to find them, and worse when it's like random issues? So you're like "oh is this the new issue of (comic)? Well,,, it is *an* issue." And then you click on it and have to get like halfway through to know if you've read it or not. 

And some of them really are *so* long and that's so much to keep track of- I used to just have like 100 open tabs on my phone and they were all just different comics I was reading. Then I made a list just to remember what still running comics I was even reading so I'd remember to read new issues and that didn't even work. 

I loved BOP don't get me wrong! (Especially since I don't know if I already said that) but I am also the type of person who will complain about every little thing. (not all the time, and usually just inside my head, but like one thing I usually bring up with the movie is the way it's kind of weird that they like? Smashed Black Canary's two backstories together to make one? It's just a weird choice to me so I'll talk about that but it doesn't ruin the movie for me) Cass However is a big thing Im not a fan of. They didn't even make her a better character she's just lame. 

And in movies generally it's kind of annoying how studies and other movies can dictate things. I don't know if that makes sense, but how like in Marvel Spiderman was owned by someone else so he could never be in the main timeline. I understand why but it's still? Sad I guess? I don't think any of that made sense I am so sorry. 

I'm also sad that the DCEU is just non existent now. They're fumbling that ball so hard. I feel like they finally got somewhere? Like BOP was a very good movie (granted, it didn't get good reviews because women aren't allowed to exist, so I don't know how good it was for the studio's) and wonder woman was doing good. They had a lot of hype. And they just? Threw it away. Gal Gadot was loved as Diana but they threw that out. Same with Henry Cavill. They're making a mistake, I think. 

(I personally would probably consume little DCEU content anyway, because I don't like tv or movies, buy I 100% would've watched the Jurnee Smollet black canary show that was rumored to be in the works and am sad that has been thrown out) 

I've never heard of Luke Mitchell but I just googled him and that's not a bad fancast tbh. I personally am I did hard for Charlie Hunnam's fan cast though I think he's probably too rugged for Ollie. And all of that aside it still would've been really great to get any black canary or black canary and Green Arrow content. 

I bought a new comic today (Batgirl #1, rebirth) and found out I already owned it because my comic collection is such a mess since it's all from the dollarstore :(  I own the first Bombshells United, and other than that I haven't read any. I wanted it to be like, a comic I owned all of and read in person but I don't have the funds for that. 

I might use that site I appreciate that. I do the same thing but what I use is covered in bad pop ups and continuously opens new tabs I have ti be careful to delete and not open (I don't know how I still have a phone, but they almost certainly have all of my personal information). 

I don't know how comics heavy of a mood I'm in ATM (it's one of those things y'know, where you're like !! This is my main hobby!! And then you start it and you're like "I would literally rather die then do this hobby right now." ) but I will try to read the bombshells runs- I went as Bombshell Black Canary for Halloween a few years ago, so I AM a fan. And I'll try to finish secret six (do I know where I am? No. But I think it'll be worth it)

okay under the cut i got ramble again

nothing wrong with being a classy girly girl! i was definitely inbetween being a tomboy and a girly girl personally. i didnt get into the superhero animated shows until i was like, 11? i didnt really have much exposure to superheroes much before finding the shows, but i got my little sibling to watch some of the shows with me

i remember watching the avengers (2012) maybe like a year or so after it came out (it was on netflix at the time) but im pretty sure i started by watching the shows (i remember being disappointed bc the wasp wasnt in the movie even tho in the show she was one of the founding members, which i believe is the same in the comics, and i really liked wasp from the show. i did enjoy the movie, but i never watched any of the sequels until endgame, which at that point i watched solely bc i was promised captain marvel and then they only gave me like 5 minutes of her.

as for marvel comics i’ve mostly read young avengers & runaways stuff. i can’t remember if i got around to any captain marvel comics but i was gifted the novelization that came out after the movie that was like an (unofficial?) prequel to it and i did enjoy reading that.

on the note of random comic issues i literally bought a like 50 pack of random comics that was like idk some kinda deal and that is most of my comic collection which is just literally random issues, i think its all dc stuff but it could be a mix of dc and marvel? i'm back at my parents now so i'll have to dig out the box to take home with me before i leave so i can go through it. another thing thats frustrating with comics is when theres like a uhh like story that spans across multiple different comic runs? like i was reading the 2000 batgirl run as previously mentioned (i have finished it now) but i did ended up just skimming a few issues bc they were a part of some bigger batfam plot that was spanning across other comics and i could not be bothered to go find the issues that that particular story continued through.

totally fair to be the person who likes to complain about every little thing, and super valid to like a movie and also have some issues with it! i can totally respect peoples hangups about the bop movie not being a perfect comic adaptation and i would agree, but to me being a perfect adaptation and being a perfect movie are not mutually exclusive and i will hold it in my heart as a perfect movie aksdjglk (its right up there with the old guard in my personal movie rankings) my problem is when people hate it for stupid reasons (i still remember seeing a post hating on the movie for how it killed black mask ((it wasn't a good enough death for him)) like this movie isn't about him!! hes a loser! the only "better" option for his death is if harley ran him over with a combine tractor bc i think that would be funny as hell. but i dont think gotham is the type of city that has a lot of combine tractors.)

yeah as far as the dceu goes i didnt have any attachment to the batman or superman films (i only watched bvs for wonder woman lajdfkjladf) but like the 1st wonder woman was really good! (didnt watch the second one bc i heard poor reviews of it ((and not just from fanboys who can't take a female centric superhero movie))), i enjoyed the aquaman movie and the 1st shazam (still need to watch the 2nd one) and obviously i loved bop. i was super excited for the batgirl film and the casting of supergirl (would LOVE to see her get a movie!!) i guess we'll just have to see where things go now. alas. i’m more of a tv show guy anyways. (not that there’s the best history for live action dc tv shows either…but they sure do. exist! and i sure have consumed a large quantity!)

god super valid re buying a comic you already have. i lowkey wanna find out if there is a nice comic book store near where im living rn bc at the very least it could be a nice way to force myself to get out for reasons other than to go to work and to grocery stores (though idk if it’s a good idea financially but it could be a cool. occasional treat)

also SUPER valid w the not being in a heavy comic mood, it really is smth that comes n goes like the tide and it’s like a big mental investment (at least in my opinion) to delve into the comics world and sometimes there’s just not enough brain to spare! no worries/pressure on picking it back up. (but if you do, and check out bombshells, united comes after the original run so i would rec starting w the originals first!)

also :O going as bombshells bc for halloween is SO cool mad respect (i loveeeee her bombshells design. which. i love MOST of the bombshells designs but. y’know) i tried to go as black canary for halloween one year i got leather boots and a leather jacket and maybe leather pants and a blonde wig. i was aiming for an arrowverse black canary (e1 laurel lance) but i didn’t really match even that well lol. oh well.

Screaming crying throwing up over Viconia in this game 😭😭😭 I know that it's the setting etc and WotC stuff but even still my heart. I'm sorry Vici. The only reason Fe didn't kill her was she didn't think Jaheira would like it. Which is growth for her gd.

I cannot comprehend giving SH to her especially if you help her rebel from Shar... and especially when she turns the puppy dog eyes on you... It's beyond fucked up cruelty like... Damn Shar. Having her re-meet and torture and forget her parents over and over? Probably in that classroom or whatever? And Vic to be party to that? 😬 still love her and I couldn't kill her this time, but damn. She asks way too much, asking Viconia to destroy everything she achieved in Waterdeep to usher in SH taking her place? Fuck. And for her to stay loyal to that... idk I just always wanted better for Vic, tho this version of her fate might not deserve the compassion of SH or the player etc. She is probably one of the more typically Evil aligned characters presented in this game like....... the only maybe not horrible aspect was Jaheira apparently disapproving of Vic dying. But Minsc doesn't.

I had Vyn romance Viconia at one point bc my girl Ophiera couldn't... and I loved her I always felt for her so this is pretty fucked up, but the canon setting makes it kinda unredeemable like... do I think this Viconia would ever turn from Shar? No. Shar is all she has, and Shar has made certain of it. The fact that Vic would have probably been killed by SH to for her to Ascend to her position too... and the fact that in some toxic fucked up horrible way, Vic probably loved and felt conflicting pride and disgust towards SH in some form that was so far from actual love and so horrific that it's just. (Vile, truly and very interesting dynamic like. Shar wtf.) I'm definitely curious about anything else you glean by playing SH.

And for the parents to still believe in Selune...? I mean. Damn. I know Gods etc are a huge present deal for people in Faerun and beyond but even Still that's such a situation for a crisis of faith... not that I imagine Shar would have relented regardless. I mean. DECADES of being tortured by cultists and one of them is your brainwashed daughter? Just idk religion is hard for me.

I tried both scenes with the parents bc initially, I was going to let SH choose... and she chooses to respect their choice and be selfless. Which seemed beautiful, and even Lae'zel said it was the right thing, not the easy one... (Actually... Minsc really surprised me with his response to it.) and the moonmotes with them free and at peace watching over her... but tbh. SH deserves better. She deserves to be selfish, I don't want her to have to like jump to feeling like she needs to be some redeemed daughter of Selune when she doesn't even know what she wants other than peace. And the pain is terrible, that she might have to carry a burden cast upon her by Shar... but it's an interesting fantastical take on chronic pain and loss and she deserves to have the peace she wants to figure out her Future when she's lost 40 years of her life already. Let our girl be selfish; it kinda made me sad that you have to persuade her to say what she wants. (Fitting though.) Anyway. Idk if it's terrible that I was romancing her on my DUrge for my secondary playthrough now.... bc I want dark gods to stay TF away from SH... but idk we'll see. 🙃

I thought her little friendship/romance thing with Nocturne was sweet. I do love a purple character. Kinda shipped it tbh, I love that she had Someone at minimum.

I just really want more info on how this mission worked. Since SH was their party healer, and it wasn't a solo infiltration mission or something...

I'm still wrestling with this, and there isn't really an easy answer, but I've managed to distil my feelings into some key points:

I don't think the fatphobia was deliberate or malicious, and I also feel like Gadd did try to skirt around or soften some of it (one of the first things his narration does is criticise the fact he immediately felt sorry for Martha when he first saw her!). But Gadd is also a thin guy, and has the privilege of thinness, which means there are aspects of fatphobia that he's going to be oblivious to.

There are no ""good"" main characters in this show. Everyone is flawed and complex, and I like that! And because nobody is really "in the right" at any point, the impact of Martha being fat and an antagonist is lessened – but it still has an impact.

The issue with Baby Reindeer is less about the show as an individual piece of art, and more about how it slots into an overarching narrative about fat people. (There's an article which really illustrates this, but I'll come back to that).

I don't think there is ever a point when Donny or one of his friends explicitly derides Martha's appearance because she's fat. It's more implied by the fact that Donny makes it clear his compliments were only "banter" (i.e., that it's kind of silly to assume they could be anything but banter). You could equally interpret this disinterest in Martha as a result of the age gap, her personality, some combination thereof – or maybe he just... wasn't into her, and it wasn't any deeper than that. There are also moments where the audience is led to understand Donny's empathy for Martha based on assumptions about her appearance, like the bit where the camera focuses on her sitting alone at the bar while Donny's voiceover theorises about there being dances that nobody invited her to. There's this immediate implication of Martha being, in some way, an outcast or socially undesirable. You could interpret it as quite a number of things – because she's not conventionally attractive, because she's poor, because she's fat, because she's mentally ill, because she's uncouth, because she's "weird". These are all things that people are very much made outcasts for! But the camera work, hair, makeup, costume and lighting do accentuate the ways in which she isn't conventionally attractive, and that feeds into (and is fed by) social assumptions about fat bodies as inherently gross, pitiable or undesirable.

I've seen responses to fatphobia criticisms about BR saying that Jessica Gunning was cast as Martha because she's a phenomenal actor, and not because she's fat, and not because the woman who was allegedly Gadd's real-life stalker was fat too. (And I do have to stress allegedly, because the joe public are never going to know the whole truth of this situation and tbh I don't think people should be speculating about it). I wholeheartedly agree that Gunning is a phenomenal actor but here's where we circle back to the design and production choices. Martha is obviously poor and she's not well, which is to say she's not going to be turning out looking like Jessica Gunning at her best on the red carpet.

But i feel like, consistently, her appearance was emphasised as ""ugly"", especially when you compare her to.... basically every other person in the show, but especially the other women. Teri, Keeley and Keeley's mum all get "flattering" makeup, clothes that fit, camera lighting that compliments them. It really makes Martha stand out.

The coffee shop scene was when that something not right feeling started to niggle at me, actually. Look at this shot. The focal point is on her and Donny, and she is significantly bigger than literally anyone else visible on screen.

The only other named fat character in the series is Gino, who gets called a "fat prick", and he's still notably smaller than Martha. Extras, like in that coffee shop scene, are (as far as I remember) generally on the thin to average side, as are all the other people Donny is shown having relationships with. I've said this so many times over my years here, but if you're going to have a marginalised antagonist, you can't have them be the only character marginalised in that way. If nothing else, having more people who are visibly fat/ugly/disabled/whatever is never a bad thing. This is where I feel like the show really fell down.

The makeup, too. She wears bright pink lipstick and bold eyeshadow a few times, and it's clearly meant to look jarring and badly-done. Which is obviously predicated on beauty standards that women are meant to meet.

And again, I fully acknowledge that Martha is, beyond everything else, mentally unwell and struggling, so she won't look as put-together. (And because this is Tumblr: no I'm not saying women can't wear whatever makeup they want or that they can't not wear makeup). I'm saying that hair and makeup made a deliberate choice here, for a deliberate reason, and I don't like what that choice implies. As soon as you use any aspect of someone's appearance to make a point about them personally, you open up the door for some pretty ugly stuff.

At the end of the day, I'm not fat. I'm one of those people who was chronically underweight and ill and got complimented for being thin while I was dangerous underweight, and now I get fatphobic comments about my belly fat when I'm finally a healthy weight. So, while I'm deeply conscious of harmful rhetoric around fatness and weight and health, I do have thin privilege. So maybe some of my feelings about Martha's presentation stem from my own internalised biases, which is a prospect I'm open to. There are fat people, however, and fat women specifically, who have watched this show and been deeply triggered by its depiction of fatness. The comment section on this article, Why Does Baby Reindeer's Martha have to be Fat?, stands as testament to that.

Are Gadd and the rest of production team responsible for people's reactions? Well... no, not wholly. An artist can't prevent anyone being upset by their art, ever, and especially not when you're handling really tricky subject matter like Baby Reindeer does. And yes of course, this is a semi-autobiographical story. Martha is based on a real person. Real people can't be ""bad"" representation. The problem is that Gadd and his team made certain choices in how Martha was presented and how her fictionalised character is handled. There's a precedent for fat antagonists whose fatness is used as shorthand for their immorality, and, intentionally or not, Baby Reindeer continues that narrative.

I was watching Baby Reindeer with mum after several people have recommended it by saying it's funny/moving/gripping, and I just... There was just something about this that really wasn't sitting right with me. Like, I get that this is meant to be an uncomfortable story & that I'm not very good at understanding comedy, so the fact I'm not finding it funny is a non-criticism. And I think it's the kind of story that should be told, and it's making some really poignant points about the double standards men face when dealing with supposedly gendered violence.

But then I realised that the only fat named character in it (so far – just finished episode 3) is Martha, the stalker. She's dressed in ""unflattering"" clothes. She has an ""ugly"" laugh. We're very obviously meant to think she's unattractive and undesirable, even outside of the fact that she's stalking and harassing someone. The story stresses that she's mentally ill and should be seen with empathy, even though what she did is heinous – a view that afaik the writer felt about his real life stalker – but.. it also seems to punch down at her by framing the root of her "delusion" as the belief she could ever be desirable. Instead of, y'know, the belief that a guy who was nice to her once is now her boyfriend. Maybe this is deliberately edgy or satiracle humour that I'm just not getting, but it very much feels like fatphobia to me.
